Hi, Researching the web suggested the car can be driven, without causing any further damage, if it's the B2 Servo. This because the B2 only affects the car getting into 1st 2nd gear, 3rd, 4th and reverse are fine. The trick is getting the transmission into 3rd or 4th, one suggestion was to remove the transmission vacuum hose which could help that happen faster. Can anyone tell me where the vacuum hose is located (picture if possible)? Does this make sound reasonable? I am not looking to continue drive without repairing, just trying to find a repair shop who will do the work and get it there without towing. Thanks, Bob ARTICLE: But, things could be worse, the car is drivable when this failure occurs, although it takes some patience. It's worse when cold, and is made worse by how much load you put on it. The object of driving a car with a bad B2 piston is to never give it much load in 1st and 2nd gears. Think of parking on a hill facing down. You want to get the car into 3rd as soon as you can and 3rd and 4th are unaffected by even catastrophicB2 failure. You might even consider pulling the transmission vacuum line so it shifts way much too early into 3rd. I did. Re: [MBZ] ADDED Automatic Transmission issue 1983 300D 195K. Shifts in Reverse but issue with Forward. Help!!!
When mine failed I found it very difficult to drive, but possible. I'd suggest taking it on a short drive around the neighborhood, assuming you're in a low-traffic area, to see if you feel like it's practical/safe to attempt driving to the shop. The vacuum hose connects to a switch valve at the top of the engine valve cover. The valve is tied into the throttle linkage and has a bunch of vacuum lines connected to it. The line to the transmission runs down and behind the engine. Note that if you disconnect any vacuum lines you will want to plug the open ends (golf tees work well) so that your other vacuum functions (engine shut-off, door locks, etc.) continue to work. Not to my thinking, but I've never done it. If the shift RPM is controlled by a vacuum signal, wouldn't a total loss of vacuum give you upshifts at maximum RPM when you want minimum RPM? On the diesel I thought that the vacuum signal mainly affected the firmness of the shift not the shift point itself. I could be wrong about that though. On my 300D the modulator diaphragm is leaking so I don't get any vacuum signal to the transmission. It shifts very firmly as a result. One of the five Allen head bolts was completely stripped. These rotors were replaced by my mechanic when I bought the car. He decided to replace a stripped bolt. Nice. Now, if I were in Maine where I have my welder, I would weld on a cheap socket and remove it. Guess I have to transport the hub/rotor assembly up there. I'm not sure how many times I got stung in the foot, I only felt one flash of pain, but my foot swelled up to the point where I had to wear flip-flops for a couple of days. How about yellow jackets nesting in the attic insulation, chewing the drywall above your bed, dropping on you in your sleep and stinging you? Fortunately they're aggressive enough that the first one in my bed stung me so I didn't have to contend with 50 of them. Another time I got nailed when they nested in a big round hay bale, I managed to clear out before getting stung a second time. The first time I had a big reaction to a yellow jacket sting I was riding my bike flat out, about 25mph, and one got in my jersey. Nailed me 3 times in the chest before I got my bike stopped and pulled my jersey off. Yellow jackets are kill on sight targets. Wasps and hornets I kill only if they nest in car doors or mirrors. Kohler or Onan, but not the consumer grade stuff. If I was going to put in another standby system I would shop around for a decent used commercial system. There are lots of them out there with few hours on them as take outs. I had a 25kW Generac at my last house, but I got it through work as a take out from a very expensive (2.5M) home. Cost me $40 to get it running, courtesy of John, the Aussie guy with the MB shop. He could source the electrical part the engine needed that couldn't be found here in the States. Very true. However, this is Dad's old car and Dad isn't around any more, nor does there appear to be any sort of sentiment in his effort to sell. Looks like it's taking up driveway space. I sent him a rather detailed note with my concerns and the justification for my offer. If anything, he shouldn't be offended. You can read between the lines in his very detailed description that deep down he knows this is a project car. Around here it' s worth maybe $5000 if it was in good running condition. Right now you can't move it out of the driveway without hitting it with a shot of ether. And if he is offended, well, TS. Dan On Aug 11, 2013, at 6:34 PM, Kaleb C. Re: [MBZ] Why I don't take my car to a mechanic
Agree completely. My 91 300D only had 100K miles on it -- I assume the rear rotors were replaced at some point although I can't imagine why at such low mileage. It looks like the rubber hose fittings and the bleed valves were worked on using a pair of pliers! The flats on the Hexes are all rounded off - I had hoped to replace the brake fluid but had to get creative - I managed to unscrew the rubber hose (with vice grips) and let some fluid leak from the connection while my pressure bleeder kept pressure on the fluid. Not the preferred method. I found a special socket in my tool box - it is intended to go on a drill and put it on the stud whatever and try to unscrew it while putting pressure on the drill. Haven't tried it yet - if it doesn't break it loose I won't have much left to work with. If I am unsuccessful removing the bleeder I will be left with a scrawny stud kind of thing which I assume wdill need to be drilled out. And if drilling the bleeder out doesn't break it loose and allow it to unscrew I will need to replace the caliper. not many good options BTW, back on 2002 or so, I bought a set of calipers and rotors from a list member. He said they had the same part numbers according to the MB Parts Site and the front stuff fit perfectly - I couldn't be happier with them. But the rears have a different bolt hole placement and the bolts are different.but doesn't matter, perhaps I will sell them on eBay? ;-) The problem is those buggered up fasteners! BTW, I forgot to mention that the hex that attaches the rubber hose to the brake hard pipe that splits near the pineapple.. The hard pipes fittings are buggered also. I cannot imagine what someone was doing back there with such low mileage but they need to buy some decent flare nut wrenches if they want to work on brakes! BTW, i soaked the fittings with PB Blaster in the hope it will help the threads break loose Anyone need a nice pair of rear calipers from a 95 E Class? ;-) If so I can help - Sorry about the long email Larry xdw ;ahoo.com wrote: I started on the front brake job on my 240D today. Re: [MBZ] Whaddya Think?
at least you'll find outhow negotiable the price really is. It does sound like lot of work -- and these cars are not very easy to work on with very expensive parts. Also consider the cost of labor - even if you can do some yourself, most people can't -- I suggest you add labor and material to do all the work needed -- no matter what, it will only be worth 12-15K if in spectacular condition - they don't seem to bring much more unless _/pristine/_. Also, there are an awful lot of those cars around - If it were me I'd wait for a next generation SL as they look much more modern than the w107 chassis. Not sure about the late 80s but the earlier 450SLs didn't get very good mileag - a consideration in the day of $5/gal gas.unless you're independently wealthy. ;-) Good Luck -- Larry 91 300D On 8/11/2013 6:19 PM, Dan Penoff wrote: I was thinking $1500. The M117 engine is pretty good, except that the timing chain guides need to replaced every now and then. This is a KE-jetronic (CIS/E) car, maybe the fuel pump relay going wonky? Hate the colour of the interior, I thought they got rid of those colours back in the 70's. Rust! Like an iceberg, you only see the tip of it and rust repair is expensive. Re: [MBZ] Speaking of Standby Generators
I would have to know more. Is it air cooled or water cooled? Where was it purchased? Model number? In fairness, the one thing that Generac has done right that no one else in the business has done is make a decent product for the consumer market. Their small standby units marketed through Home Despot and Lowe's are actually pretty decent for the money spent, and have a fairly high level of reliability. The other folks, such as Kohler and Onan, have tried to tap this market unsuccessfully for years. They can't make a highly commoditied? product because they're so deeply involved in the commercial market. Trying to make a generator based on price point rather than design is nigh impossible. Kohler's current and recent offerings, in my opinion, are too highly engineered and rely far too much on electronics. Their controls are microprocessor based and use proprietary software and hardware. If something acts up or breaks, you're screwed. Sadly, many consumers don't discover this until it's too late and they're stuck with a very expensive repair bill or a large expensive lawn ornament. Generac is an engineering house rather than a manufacturer. They design stuff themselves and base their production on volume, which is so far from what the others do it's an alien concept. That's why everything says Generac on it - it's someone else's product, like Briggs or Tecumseh, with Generac's exterior design for things like cooling. Case in point is the 25kW unit I got for nothing and fixed for $40. It had a Mitsubishi gas industrial engine that was never marketed in the US. Generac bought the long blocks directly from Mitsubishi and added all the peripheral parts such as fuel, drive and mounting. When the coil in the distributor failed (a system much like GM's HEI) the only fix was an assembly replacement - a new distributor - to the tune of $1600 for the part alone. No, but you do need to specify which one - the 2012 and later or the earlier ones - complete re-design for 2012. Re: [MBZ] Speaking of Standby Generators
It's an air cooled two cylinder model (13 kW NG, 15 kW LP). I think the model number is 04390-3. I bought it in late 2005 or early 2006 through an electrician as part of a remodel/addition job to my 1854 house near Raleigh NC. It cost about $3500 as I recall. I have a sub-panel (fed from the transfer switch) that powers most of the house. Ironically, the very frequent power outages almost totally stopped after I got the generator. Thanks for all the insight on these things. The controls on mine are quite primitive but they work well enough. The speed control is a simple mechanical governor and the voltage regulator looks analog. Nothing that would intimidate a shade-tree mechanic. Scott -Original Message- From: Mercedes [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of Dan Penoff Sent: Sunday, August 11, 2013 8:44 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] Speaking of Standby Generators I would have to know more. With travel time, mileage and labor all wrapped up in that repair, it exceeded 50% of the cost of a new unit. The owner bought a new unit and we took the old one back. I did some research and found that the engine was common in Asia and Oceania, so I got a hold of John in Australia and he got me the coil - for a whopping $40 US shipped!
