Subject: 3400 Motorola WN825G
From: Wanda K. [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Message-ID: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm trying to help a friend get his Powerbook 3400c rigged for wireless.
Does anybody know if a Motorola WN825G card will work with the 3400c?

--
Wanda K.

I have no reference to it on my Wireless FAQ site. Is this a OEM version of
the Lucent WaveLan/Orinoco card?

Check the FCC ID number on the back of the card and compare it to the
numbers I have on my FAQ. If they are the same, then the card may be
compatable with the Orinoco drivers.

Please see the note on Wireless FAQ about the Alvarion BreezeNET PC-DS.11b
card. It is a OEM of the Lucent, but the rom does not let me use the
Orinoco Mac software. This is the only OEM I found that does this.

What OS is the 3400c using?

Hello,

did you exhange the PRAM battery ? It is located on the small panel
above the keyboard. Those battery is rechargable ( when not dead)
It can also help to leave the 3400 for two days plugged in.
So the PRAM battery can recharge.

Things that i have tried are

removed every thing from the logic board of the bad 3400 and replaced
it with the good parts starts straight up shows a 200mhz cpu in system
 profiler, all fine.

put all the other parts on the known good logic board nothing.

I changed every part 1 by 1 that's ram hdd power-board ethernet card
screen and every time only one book starts the other is not even
 getting glod.

 i really do not understand.

One ended yesterday for 187.50 that has everything

Most of the time they go from 150 to 200 depending on
how many extras are tossed in.

I'd say the max you'd get would be 200.

Thanks, that was a good suggestion. I went through the reload process
and used extended this time. Right off the bat the difference was
obvious, I picked up what seemed like a couple of gigs just loading the
os. Out of 38 formatted I had something like 36 and change left the
first time using normal formatting. Under extended it showed 37 and
change. I forget the numbers exactly but it was a huge difference.
Most noticeable now is the absolute lack of noise from the 3400. The
samsung drive is silent, and much faster. This is a much recommended
change for anyone who wants to tinker. It would have gone much quicker
if I'd remembered that 9.1 won't boot but 8.5 will.

The OT question is : What does everyone name their hard drives and/or
computers on your network? I figure with the creative crowd here in
Powerbooks there might be some pretty neat names for drives/computers
out there. Mine have names such as Waldo, Dude, Bubba, Buddy, Bedmac,
Kathjam, and, my favorite, Bobomb (from the Mario games). Any cool ones
in the ether?

I used to have Lisa Simpson saying I am the Lizard Queen! as a

Then there was Lizard Queen 2 and 3. But I lost that sound bite, so

Turns out neither 9.1 CD I had would boot. 8.5.1 would, so that's where
I am now. There wasn't much interactivity, only a choice between Mac
standard or Mac extended formats for the drive. I chose standard since I
didn't know the difference. So the drive works, I am back to 80 megs of
RAM and it's sunny here in Toronto, although there will be no hockey

Was it a Powerbook specific CD ? ( Not absolutely necessary )
You probably should have had to deal with an installer icon and agree
to the license agreement and offered the chance of a custom install.

The CD should boot by holding down the C key after hitting the
power button and hearing the startup chime.

Did you press any reset button to dump NVRAM ?
You ,may have to use disk setup to format the disk also. Use HFS + format.

The CD was PB specific (pretty sure) but there was no installer icon and
no agreement. I pressed the space bar, which I thought was the key
sequence for booting from the CD. I pressed the reset button but only
for a fraction of a second, thinking that since the PRAM had been out
for an hour that all would be reset. Would I still have to push the
reset for a minute or so? And I thought there would be some format
choice but none has appeared. I will give it a bit and then maybe reboot
it. Damn, I hope I don't have to tear it apart again. Thanks Flux.

You need to hit the reset for about 30 seconds to be sure it dumps.
NVRAM is a different animal than PRAM.

Then hold down the C key quickly after pushing the power key.
Hold it down until it boots. I assume this machine is like other Macs
in this respect.

I don't know if the 3400 has my 1400's habit of starting up with a
black screen after a reset. If so just adjust the brightness back up.

Good luck and you are very welcome,

Me again. That does it. I'm going to try a complete os install starting
from 9.1. I just tried IE 5.1 without the SLP extension and it froze
again. I won't post anymore til I try from 9.1.
Thanks for all the help tho, Dennis

reboot and try again.

As an aside, I just set up my 3400c with an Orinoco silver card and, after
following the README instructions (which I never do) , the thing is pretty
cool and pretty fast on the 'net. Goodness, wireless is fun!
A lot of people are shocked at how responsive a seven-year-old 3400c is when
they first get their hands on one. You can see why it was a $5,000 piece of
hardware back in 1997.

Can anyone explain to this Windows guy what exactly Finder is?
Like what is a windows counterpart to it? The kernel? I know the finder is
always running so I assume it is like Explorer (not the internet one) .
Yes, the Finder is roughly the equivalent of Windows Explorer. Apparently,
Apple did something to the Finder in 9.2.x that made it somewhat more
responsive than in 9.1, which is why the third-party hacks exist for
installing 9.2 on unsupported systems.

What I did, and be aware this doesn't work for everyone, either, is boot to
a Zip disk with a barebones 8.1 on it, then go onto my hard drive and remove
the Finder, Open Transport and TCP/IP stack from a de-blessed 9.2 System
Folder. I put them in my active 9.1 folder, then rebooted the 3400 to the
9.1 folder. The transplant was successful in my case.

Tried 9.2 several times. Internet would NEVER work and the 3400 would
freeze
all the time. 9.1 is cool, stable and enough for me. A sow's ear etc.
It seems to work for some and not for others. My 3400 was never stable in
9.2, but I was able to pick up a little more speed by re-installing 9.1 and
then replacing the Finder and OT components from a 9.2 system folder into my
9.1 installation. The 9.2 Finder is clearly more responsive than the 9.1
version.

I eventually went to the system folder/preferences and took the system

freezes at the desktop, the cursor moves but the dropdowns don't
work.
If I force quit and re-boot to the desktop, I can shut down. Any
thoughts on this? Thanks, Dennis
Among other considerations, the PowerBook 3400c does not support Mac
OS 9.2.x, even though some folks manage to install such with
patches. See the following Apple Support document for system

Re: 3400/198 = 3400/240?

2004-10-26 Thread Tom and Lisa P
Which begs the question for me...Apple knew this board was capable of at
least 50 MHz bus speeds, since they did it on the Kanga. Why did they
cripple the 603 models with anemic bus speeds when a 10 percent increase can
offset a 20 percent difference in clockspeed?
Although the 3400 and 3500 are similar, you cant necessarily say its
capable of 50 MHz bus speed. The ICs on the motherboard may not be
rated for that speed, and the RAM may have the same problem. Getting
the bus speed to 44 MHz doesnt surprise though.

Here's a screenshot of the comparsion if anyone's interested...
http://athalawulf.com/desktop198.jpg
As a side note, I know there was some discussion about possibly replacing
the failing IC's that cause 3400 sleeping sickness. Did anyone figure out a
way to do this, and if so, how? I wouldn't mind fixing my 240 MHz board if I
could.
I have tried, and tried, and swapped many ICs and I have had no luck so far.

I've heard of people getting the 180 MHz boards up to a 50 MHz bus for a
clockspeed of 225 MHz, but mine locked up at that speed when I tried it. I
had a 44, a 48 and a 50 MHz crystal, but the 48 and 50 both failed. I was
thinking it was either the onboard RAM or the cache holding me back. I
really didn't expect to make 225 anyway when I saw the CPU; it was an older
stepping on a larger process than my 240. I wish I'd had a 45 and a 46 to
try, but no such luck.

I think 44 works most of the time. I remember another listmember reaching
264/44 with a 240 MHz 3400 earlier this year.

I have tried, and tried, and swapped many ICs and I have had no luck so
far.

Hmmm...it might work with the one on my new board, but I'm not going to
sacrifice it in order to find out. I'm pleasantly surprised with how it
performs at 198 MHz, plus I have the knowledge that it's a brand new board
with a new IC on it.

Re: 3400, browser, JS and no PayPal - confused!

Paypal and its parent eBay upgrade their software (the new eBay 2.0) on or
about June 5, 2004. They no longer fully support Mac OS 9 browsers. Their
new eBay 2.0 is designed to work with Windows computers only. They wont
admit this, but that is what has happened.

Here is what I have found out that does not work with Paypal.

iCab, cannot change funding source, it gives you a new page asking to add a
new bank account. Unable to complete payments because of this. Cannot send
a trouble report by their web based system, buttons don't work when you try
to send the report. Prior to this upgrade, iCab worked in all functions.
iCab version 2.9.7 2.9.8

IE, pages don't load, buttons don't work, this varies from day to day as
Paypal changes the coding on each page. Unable to complete payments because
of this. Prior to this upgrade, IE works in all functions. IE version 5.1.7

Opera, will work but I don't like it. Opera v6.0.3

Netscape, have not tried it, but was advised by Paypal support that it has
problems also. Netscape v7.02

In iCab, eBay will lock up computer with large amounts of disk activity
and expand ram usage ( from 3-4mb to 40+ mb) when you have more that 3 tabs
open. This experience was with a PB1400/G3/466 upgrade and OS 8.6 9.1 and
an iMac/rev a, with OS8.6 and 256mb ram (with iMac its about 5 tabs open
before I get problems). With more than three tabs open, it can take up to 5
minutes of disk activity to open or close a tab.

When I created filters to cut down on some of the advertisements, ebay
started downloading 5k and 10k PDF files which were the ads I was trying
to block. I guess this is what push advertising is. Push the adds to the
viewer no mater what. I deleted my filters and deselected the PDF viewer
in iCab to stop this. No other web site I have been to has ever done this.
Prior to eBay v2.0 upgrade this was not a problem.

Its important to note that of all the browsers for the Mac and OS9 or
below, only iCab is still being upgraded. A good reason to support
shareware.

There are thousands if not millions of Mac users with G3 and G4 machines
running various flavors of OS 9 or below. These users do not want to
upgrade to OSX, some cannot upgrade, but their Mac's are fully capable of
surfing the web. There is no reason not to support these users.

This is not a problem where your machine is underpowered, this is a coding
problem. They are using HTML to preform functions as though it was an
application.

Please call Paypal customer service line and let them know you want them to
support Mac's and OS 9.

I had this exact experience and called Paypal tech support, whereupon they
told me straight out that they were not supporting any classic Mac browsers,
or IE in any format, any more. I pointed out that it would be very nice if
they bothered to tell customers this anywhere on their site, instead of
having thousands of us simply try to do something that worked the day before
and suddenly have it not work for no obvious reason, leading to endless
wasted time trying to get things to work, etc.

I also tried to impress upon them that a large part of their customer base
was running Classic Mac OS. The tech responded with a mantra of: Security,
security, security... saying none of these browsers were up to their high
security standards. I pointed out that my banking and credit card companies
all managed to make their sites work with browsers I use. He insisted that
their security was not up to the stellar level that Paypal is committed to.
:-P

In any case, while I have lots of problems getting pages to load in Mozilla,
I have actually managed to get some Paypal transactions done successfully in
that, and in Netscape 4.79 (which, however, crashes Macs if you even try to
load an eBay page in it, at least for myself and several of my customers.)

I will be interested to hear what happens if people call Paypal. Please feel
free to write me (offlist, please! as this is venturing into the OT) with
your experiences, as I may write an LEM column about it.

hum. Watcher works by inserting a module into your IP stack. It's
all interrupt driven, and that level doesn't change. There could be
some forced buffer flushes happening, I guess.

Try some big downloads; see if there's any change over a long term.
Also try some of the speed tests at www.dslreports.com. They have a

This is a known problem and the fault is at ebays side. Also many other

care only for IE for Windows.

But ebay offers an alternative: You can put the images on your own

This will work in all browsers.

no, Drew and someone else said they had no issues as well.
It's IE 5.1.7, 9.1 (US), 1400/G3. Carbonlib 1.6 but as Drew said, IE

If Paypal has fixed the problem than I am amazed but happy.

I was able to upload pictures to E-bay using my Dad's PB1400 (OS8.6).
I used the wamcom Mozilla 1.3.1 http://www.wamcom.org/ and Netscape

I didn't use E-bay's photo upload tool, I just browsed to the photo on
my hard drive.
Unfortunately I didn't have any PayPal payments to make before I shipped
the 1400 of to Cambridge but I'll try and rember to use the Wamcom
Mozilla on my Lombard (OS 9.2.2) next time I need to make a payment.

Not a figment. A proven fact, IMO. :)
Back when iCab 2.9.8 was first released, I did some comparison
testing using both iCab and Moz. In addition to the speed problem,
there are definately memory leak and stack corruption bugs in the
Flash plug-in. I sent full bug reports, including stdlogs, to
Macromedia, covering 7 versions of Flash, from 5.0r41 to 7.0r19.

iCab has other animation refresh issues with Flash, so I only have
the plug-in installed for Moz currently. In general, I try to quit
Moz as soon as I've finished with a Flash site.

Flash's problems aren't limited to the plug-in. We have purchased
several Flash-based games from Macromedia. Geeze are they buggy!
You can watch them chew memory with About this Macintosh and Memory
Mapper... As you play, they eat more and more memory. They get
slower and slower, stop responding to key presses, and eventually
freeze up. They crash OS 9 with a stack corruption. They hang
Classic under Panther. And when run natively, they'll freeze Panther
itself. ...I've noticed also the PC version of one of the games we
bought will BSOD our Dell laptop. So I guess that means the problem
is that Macromedia writes crap in general, not just for the Mac...

Thanks for the confirmation, Dan.
Maybe that's why I have less issues with eBay and
PayPal on IE iCab. ie, no Flash.
The only real issue I had and why I originially posted
was Gmail (ActiveX). And Mozilla took care of that.
Yahoo mail is even doable on iCab now although not
perfect. I did try downloading one of the Yahoo iCab
bits for the Filter Manager from Rob's site but it
didn't seem to make any difference. There was an
instruction to go to a yahoo mail URL only once to get
it to work:

http://us.f528.mail.yahoo.com/ym/BetaSwitcher?switch=1src=betadest=currentnof=1

but I didn't understand the logic even though I tried
it. Maybe I didn't have all the identity settings
right but if that was the case I would have thought
that Rob would specify the correct settings if it
mattered.

BTW, do you use the MRJ Beta5(v1.0b5) plug-in for
Mozilla? The Quicktime (v5.02) plug-in?
Any others I should get?

In Mozilla:Plug-ins, I have the Default stub, MRJPlugin 1.0b5, and
Shockwave Flash NP-PPC 7.0r19. That's it.

From System Folder:Plug-ins, Moz picks up QuickTime Plugin 6.0.3.
FWIW, I think installing QuickTime 6 is one of the worst things I
ever did. I should have stuck with QT 5.0.2 (which shipped with OS
9). QT 6 is slow crap. The mpegs I have now play at only 80% of
their prior frame rate. And I'm totally unable to view DivX files.
I installed QT 6 because I wanted mpeg-4 support. But it's so slow,
my mpeg-4 videos are unwatchable. Instead I use a 200-MHz PC laptop.

Re: 3400, browser, JS and no PayPal - confused!

FYI...

A lot of people are saying Ebay works with Netscape 4.xx or 7.xx, iCab or IE
5 and OS 9.2.2 etc. When you say it works I hope you have tried uploading a
picture to Ebay or making a payment in Paypal. These are javascripts, that
(as of the last time I tried it, the first week of last August) DO NOT work.

Sure Ebay looks fine in Netscape 7.x (but is terribly slow using a phone
modem) but technically DOES NOT WORK since one of the most important
features just sits there and does nothing. An Ebay listing without a picture
is pretty useless. Sure I can set up an outside account and host my own
pictures, but that entails more steps that Ebay has provisions for.

The same goes for Paypal. I was loading the first page fine, but when I
tried to make payments etc. Netscape 7 was crapping out again.

So if Ebay and Paypal have fixed these problems than I apologize but if they
haven't I wouldn't say they render these sites fine with OS 9.2.2.

So what DOES WORK? What works and has worked for me and my friends is
Mozilla 1.2.1.

We have been selling on Ebay, uploading pics to Ebay and making payments,
withdrawing money etc. with Paypal. The only glitches I have found is a
couple of javascripts in Ebay. One is the preview description link. It is
right under the area where you write your description. I could care less
about this glitch because you just have to go to the next page to see it
previewed and if there is a problem you can hit the back button.

I posted almost the same question on the iMac list a month or so ago. I
downloaded probably every conceivable browser for my machine (iMac G3
running OS 9.2.2). After a considerable amount of trial and error I found
the best browser that works the best with Ebay and Paypal is Mozilla 1.2.1.

http://www.mozilla.org/releases/old-releases-1.1-1.4rc3.html

(The newer version of Mozilla won't upload pics to Ebay when your selling
something).

The only problems I have found with this version is it quits for no reason
or quits when you go to the bookmark menu. This doesn't always happen but
when it does a restart of the Mac usually clears it up.

If your interested I posted this question a while back on the 'fritter. You
can read it here:

Re: 3400, browser, JS and no PayPal - confused!

2004-10-08 Thread Kenneth Vann

In iCab, eBay will lock up computer with large amounts of disk activity
and expand ram usage ( from 3-4mb to 40+ mb) when you have more that 3 tabs
open. This experience was with a PB1400/G3/466 upgrade and OS 8.6 9.1 and

minutes of disk activity to open or close a tab.

Hello, all, I'm hoping your joint expertise can puzzle this one out.

Our 3400's have always been hideously slow - to the point of choking
- on some websites such as ebay. In particular, https seems to kill
things.

In the end I found that using iCab turning off JS made ebay bearable.

But now, all of a sudden, I can't pay for anything with PayPal. I'm
not aware of any changes that I've made , but its been a few months
since I last tried. Any one else got this problem or is it just me?

What happens is that it fails at the last 'review and confirm' screen
- I click pay and it returns me to the same screen , or back to the
start of the payment process in Ebay. Doesn't make any difference
whether I start from ebay or paypal to do this. Looks like a JS
problem? Except that its still no good even with JS on.

Now I'm not sure if its either a problem with my particular machine,
or all old macs/browsers. I have tried IE 5 and Communcator 4.7 with
the same effect.

Any ideas anyone?

Has anyone reported directly to you problems with posting items to ebay?
(This whole thread has evolved beyond gmail into other areas. Personally,
while I never sell on ebay, the rest of it works for me, and while some
folk have reported iCab problems using paypal, it works fine for me, too.)
The ebay web page is very badly written. It has lots of errors and issues in
almost all browsers with the exception of IE for Windows. But with the right
browser settings almost everything will work, even in iCab.

()

Please call Paypal customer service line and let them know you want them to
 support Mac's and OS 9.

PayPal US toll-free at: 1-888-221-1161 or please call 1-402-935-2107.

Never heard of that. JScript Java.
JScript is MS' bastardization / takeover attempt of JavaScript.

thought that NS at least used a completely seperate JS (not from MRJ)
You are confusing JavaScript and Java.
JavaScript (or more formally ECMAScript) is a html scripting language
driven from within the browser. Each browser has its own engine.

Java is a programming language. The run-time environment is either
Apple's MRJ or MS' or Netscape's. Nothing to do with JavaScript.

Most everything is slow with a phone modem, iCab is pretty fast though.

I use a cable modem, but I was using a phone modem a few months ago.

I don't recall if iCab can upload pictures or not, but I do know that
Netscape 7.02 does upload pictures just fine as I have done so for an auction
of mine.

I also don't know if IE 5.1.7 will upload pictures or not either, but one
could try, just like one can try with iCab and see if it will upload pictures.

I do know that iCab doesn't handle the drop down things that look like arrows
pointing down on eBay which one can use to select actions.

Yahoo is a special case. Their HTML is broken. To make iCab work
with Yahoo! Mail, create a filter specifically for Yahoo with the

the usage logs and sees that 98% of their customers use IE, so
they see no need to break the MS deal or force their developers to
use the international standards. And we'll never show up on those
reports because those of us who don't use IE have set our browsers to

JavaScript has nothing whatsoever to do with Java beyond a caffeinated
name, and MRJ does not interact with it, nor is it even needed for
JavaScript capability.

JavaScript is a separate HTML-based scripting language supported by web
browsers, originally developed by Netscape and called JavaScript
largely to capitalize on the (then) hot buzz for Java. It's stated
purpose was to make interacting with java applets easier, but even so
it's merely bridge code, and never was Java per se. I'd wager that 99%
of the use of JavaScript in pages never comes near a Java applet.

Re: 3400, browser, JS and no PayPal - confused!

2004-10-05 Thread Brian Braunschweiger
I have been using iCab 2.9.8 without problem with PayPal. I can view
most stuff on eBay but it takes a long time to load and has already
been mentioned, I can't use iCab to list an item for sale. Thus I
have switched to Mozilla 1.2.1 for my eBay stuff. I have NOT gotten
iCab 2.9.8 to work with gmail.

Here's the basics on my setup:
OS 9.1
Carbon Lib 1.6
Not sure where to find MRJ - an extensioin in the MRJ Libraries
folder has a Get Info of 2.2.5

iCab is 2.9.8 - just the straight download off the iCab site
within iCab:
- identity is iCab 2.9.8
- Java Prefs checked are Execute Java Applets, Don't execute Java
applets from foreign servers and Release Javavm when quitting last
applet
- enable style sheets is checked
- Javascripts prefs - everything is checked

Hope that helps. I have liked and still like iCab for so much. I only
go to something else when iCab becomes too much trouble (like eBay)
or doesn't work at all (like gmail).

2004-10-04 Thread Howard R. Katz
I'm wondering if I somehow got a different version of iCab, even tho it
shows up as 2.9.8. I can get into PayPal and do everything including
paying and checking my history, but I don't get that browser not
supported message others are seeing on Gmail, on both my PPC'd 520c and
my 5300c. I'd be interested in swapping iCab versions with someone to see
what the difference is.

Re: 3400, browser, JS and no PayPal - confused!

2004-10-04 Thread maxtek
I posted almost the same question on the iMac list a month or so ago. The
answer to your question is all browser related. I downloaded probably every
conceiveable browser for my machine (iMac G3 running OS 9.2.2). After a
considerable amount of trial and error I found the best browser that works
the best with Ebay and Paypal is Mozilla 1.2.1.

http://www.mozilla.org/releases/old-releases-1.1-1.4rc3.html

(The newer version of Mozilla won't upload pics to Ebay when your selling
something).

The only problems I have found with this version is it quits for no reason
or quits when you go to the bookmark menu. This doesn't always happen but
when it does a restart of the mac usually clears it up.

If your interested I posted this question a while back on the 'fritter. You
can read it here:

Subject: 3400, browser, JS and no PayPal - confused!

9.2.1
MRJ 2.2.5
iCab 2.98

If anyone had a solution it would be great, I'm seriously considering
getting a newer machine simply so I can browse the web properly, if
this can't be fixed.

Ben (confused and cross . . .)

Virtual Memory.
What you see isn't what you get. It's the apps *behavior* that
determines how much real memory it holds.

When you launch an app, space for the full preferred size is made
in the VM allocation table. And that's what you see in About This
Macintosh. In tools such a Memory Mapper, you'll see that for Moz,
more than 50% of that allocation doesn't exist in real memory yet[*]!
And after using Moz for a while, with other apps being used also
(vying for memory), that real allocation is actually reduced (unless
you go hog wild like I do - creating a dozen+ tabs in each of 6 or so
windows)!

Now let's look at iCab. It obtains a (relatively) tiny memory
allocation at the initial launch. Then it does all its work in app
system temporary memory! IOW, it grows dynamically! Does this mean
it's using less memory? Heck no! It's actually more piggy than Moz!
It just grabs the memory out of a different basket (pool).

[*] No, this doesn't mean you're swapping either! The app is given
the space in the VM map but nothing is associated with that space yet
- neither real memory nor swap space. In the case of Moz, most of
that will be paged-in directly from the shared libraries... Kindof a
way of doing a delayed/partial launch.

FWIW,
- Dan.

Just for the heck of it, I've started ripping things out. So far so
good, I guess. It hasn't made a bit of difference to Moz's memory
usage. Moz simply doesn't load the modules unless you actually use
'em. So if you stay away from the component buttons on the bottom of
the window... hehehe. Now that the libs are missing, I've produced
some interesting crashes by hitting 'em. :)

used iCab on Ebay and I didn't notice any problems and I have used iCab on
PayPal also with out any problems. I haven't clicked on the buttons that go
to PayPal from eBay to pay for an item, so I don't know if that part works or
not.

I am using Netscape with eBay because it looks better and seems to work best,
I do think iCab works ok though as far as I could tell when I used it for
eBay.

There is an iCab coming out soon, I think it is in private Beta...though I
have no certain knowledge of this and I am not one of the tester.

You might want to eamil the iCab programmer about your issue with eBay and
PayPal, as he is very helpful.

Also there is a Yahoo! Group for iCab that is a very active group, join it
and and there might be someone there who could help more than I can.

CarbonLib is from Apple. It's a wedge library, to allow Carbon-based
apps to run on the classic Mac OS.

If you dont have the library at all, then you must not be running any
carbonized apps (eg: Eudora, Thoth, Rosetta, etc). *shrug*

2004-10-03 Thread George Mogiljansky
Hello Ben,

My 2¢ worth:

Can you turn off MRJ 2.2.5?
Can you upgrade to 9.2.2?
Can you install Netscape 7.x?
Do iCab prefs have a setting for https?
Does PayPal have a FAQ? (I have always avoided them.)
Best
George

Hello, all, I'm hoping your joint expertise can
 puzzle this one out.

Our 3400's have always been hideously slow - to the
 point of choking
 - on some websites such as ebay. In particular,
 https seems to kill
 things.

In the end I found that using iCab turning off JS
 made ebay bearable.

But now, all of a sudden, I can't pay for anything
 with PayPal. I'm
not aware of any changes that I've made , but its
 been a few months
since I last tried. Any one else got this problem or
 is it just me?

What happens is that it fails at the last 'review
 and confirm' screen
 - I click pay and it returns me to the same screen ,
 or back to the
start of the payment process in Ebay. Doesn't make
 any difference
whether I start from ebay or paypal to do this.
 Looks like a JS
problem? Except that its still no good even with JS
 on.

Now I'm not sure if its either a problem with my
 particular machine,
or all old macs/browsers. I have tried IE 5 and
 Communcator 4.7 with
 the same effect.

 Any ideas anyone?

 9.2.1
 MRJ 2.2.5
 iCab 2.98

If anyone had a solution it would be great, I'm
 seriously considering
getting a newer machine simply so I can browse the
 web properly, if
 this can't be fixed.

hum. Moz is very modular. It's esentially a driver app with a bunch
of shared libraries. It doesn't actually load the anciliary stuff
into memory unless you use it. You should be able to just pull the
lib files out...

FWIW, I never use any of the anciliary stuff. The only time Moz ever
pigs out on memory is when I hit Flash heavy sites. But that's due
to Flash's poor implementation and memory leaks; not Moz's fault.

a voltmeter that you can use to test it?

You could also try resetting the power manager to see if that helps at all...

Damn the 3400 is a surly beast when it wants to be. Great machine,

I bought it refurbished, I think. Can't remember really
