You could add a plate and instead of altering both sides and the split nut
just remove the amount of material from the support block that is the same
thickness of the plate. If you are capable of doing that much, you should
be able to make a block from scratch. :-)

There are several reasons for lots of burning. First was the bit dull? Second
if the router bit is spinning too fast for your rate of travel you will get
burn marks. Slow the router down or speed up your cranking. Good question on
the up cut, I'd be tempted to try a down cut since it would
are turning the table, couldn't that also work
on a round idiom?
