Re: (313) Matthew Johnson
i wasnt trying to say mj doesnt deserve praise you know. but i don't care if the whole list proclaims it record of the year, i can still state my opinion. derek p may be a great dj and a beautiful human being but he doesnt know me and i dont appreciate being called an elitist and "to get over myself" just because i state my opinion. i complained about hype because tristan had set the record up as so obviously incredibly wonderful, i have to feel like i'm tearing it down just because i don't completely agree. i did not mean i am against it just because it is being "hyped" (which it isnt even...), i meant it was hard to offer a differing opinion since his had big flashing neon lights around it. i'm glad for almost anybody's success who is making techno, but that doesnt mean i can't still criticize their work, gimme a break. i like plenty of things that are hyped, taste is taste hype or not! stop assuming ulterior motives (and you call me jaded!). when you set something way up high on a pedestal, it's a long way down to hear a differing opinion. it's a lot easier to discuss music when you allow in your wording that other people might feel differently and don't try so hard to "sell" it -- do you want to discuss, or do you just want to broadcast your opinion and hear "amens"? i realize tristan likes to word his praise as if greatness is undeniable, he was just as emphatic about amp last year, and that's fine, it's part of his charm, just let me disagree if i do disagree -- sometimes i dont! i didnt react strongly, i feel comfortable talking about music with tristan, i was just talking...i didnt mean to offend anybody, but apparently i'm a playerhater and an elitist now. meanwhile, ironically, it's acceptable to insult ur even tho they deserve 100 times the respect, they've earned it. gimme a break. sorry to tarnish the glowing praise but if you can offer your opinion i can offer mine, it's pretty gd simple. this is the 4th time i've been attacked by amazingly emotional fans for sharing any critical thought, 1st about amp fiddler, then matthew dear, then planet e pricing, now this. don't any of you have any real problems? well people have problems if they are taking this list that seriously and emotionally. derek and tristan's explanations for their praise is all fine, good to read, very earnest, but i don't need the insults from derek -- i have absolutely no problem with either of your opinions. and i don't call you names for not being crazy about the music i really love. i understand derek is friends with mj and matt dear and wants to stick up for them, i do the same for friends of mine, but i'm not who you think i am you got the wrong guy. I've not been this excited about anyone in techno since I don't know when, so perhaps that will make my hype a bit more credible, or maybe it's just more hype. I see the value in comparison. It may not be fair to say one i'm glad you're excited about it! hype exists for a reason, third time i've said it now...i know others who think the record flat out "sucks" and they're not "elitists" for thinking that, they like what they like and dont like what they dont. so what. let people speak their mind. sorry i said anything about hype, it obviously makes people very very sensitive and jump to conclusions. jt _ Dont just search. Re: (313) Matthew Johnson
i said i liked the record you jerks. even that it might be one of my favorites this year. i'm sure mj was great live, sorry i havent seen him yet, sounds wicked. i think he's a good producer. i was not dissing him, i was not insulting anybody who is wild about the record, i was just stating my opinion (that i'm not totally wild about it) you fascists. when others presume to state my opinion for me, when it's actually not my opinion, i feel compelled to correct them. when i wake up and read tristan proclaiming it undeniably record of the yearexcuuusse me!! it's deniable. the music that does it for you doesnt necessarily do it for me and vice versa. i can tell you why and we can discuss it. thats what the list is here for. like i said, hype is natural when a bunch of people like something, but dissenting opinions when people don't agree are equally natural! i don't disagree just for the hell of it. i'm not a big fan of the d'n'b sounding bassline in that mj record, and the overall sound of it just doesnt hit me deep, it's way fun, i'm gonna buy it, but go figure, it's a personal thing. it doesnt mean i'm an elitist. i like plenty of stuff which is more obvious and popular than mj, like ur, drexciya, other stuff which is "hyped" like unit4, metro area, etc. hype sucks regardless of whether i like the music or not, it encourages mindless consumption. i realize it is unavoidable. i don't think my opinion is more important than anybody else's, but it's worthy of being heard just like yours. i'm not an "elitist" if i don't agree with you, don't personally insult me. i don't even make proclamations about "record of the year" or presume everybody shares my opinion, i specifically qualify it as my own opinion and feelings. no tristan, not "everyone will love it" and there is nothing wrong with those who don't. people like things for all sorts of different reasons. the 3 chairs stuff i've heard is great, but i was glad to hear robin speak up and say maybe the album could have just been a single 12" (i havent heard the album yet). i don't want to hear just positive opinions, if somebody doesnt like it for some reason, i want to hear about that too before i spend my money on it. like i wish i'd heard before i bought expensive imported amp fiddler records that i found lacking -- from all the hype, i figured it was a sure bet. god forbid somebody disagree with the mob and the hype. in my mind this list is just a bunch of people shooting the sh!t about records. i don't take offense until people start taking things personally, assuming ulterior motives, making personal insults. if your opinion makes you feel justified in hyping something up, somebody else's opinions makes them equally justified to deflate the hype. i like the record plenty, but since i dont agree it's "clearly" record of the year, 1 day after it's released, in freaking july, i must have some hidden agenda?? you two live in detroit and london respectively, i live in freaking north carolina. i'd appreciate it if you assume i speak honestly about my taste when i state my opinion, i'm not emotionally tied to these artists, to club scenes, i'm not an elitist, i am just a music fan. f you very much wankers! _ Is your PC infected? Re: (313) Laptop performances
i like lisa's take on it. it's really no big deal. if the music is good people will enjoy themselves, unless they are a crappy audience who will stand around staring regardless of what you do. so if you have great music, be at least somewhat satisifed, don't take it too seriously, not everyone can be a highly entertaining performance and musical artist at the same time. the music is of course more important than the visual presentation by several times over. that said, acts like ultradyne, who have the sickest music, and have a really great stage presence, dope costumes...they do present something that is much more entertaining than if they wore plainclothes and just had laptops, even if the music was just as great in the end. if you can come up with some sort of spectacle that you are comfortable with, i think you are only improving your live performance. i'd really like a shark costume and a couple dancing girls/singers but dont have the time or money to arrange such things. by being really half-assed in my preparation for playing live, i end up having to work really hard to keep things working, making mistakes, but i've realized i kinda like it that way... i don't agree at all that a laptop or any electronic music performance takes as much work as playing bass or piano etc etc (depending on what you call "work") -- unless you are memorizing notation, practicing your playing (like, real playing) until it's really tight, and playing with other peoplebut they are two entirely different forms of performance and its not fair, pretty pointless to compare. one involves a hell of a lot of physical dexterity, co-operation, and talent, the other is much more intellectual and task based. they stand on their own as forms of performance and dont need to compete with each other, the amount of "work" can not be quantified and compared, it bugs me to hear people try to do that _ Is your PC infected? i guess this is mostly for you alex...hey! it was a fun weekend, tho i forgot how much festivals freak me out. too many people. too many nasty people. too tired to be around so many people. most everything i saw at the festival i enjoyed, tho i didnt see a whole lot. saturday it was novamen, who were fantastic (nice alden tyrell covers too! they revealed later that during 'love explosion' they were singing 'f*ck alden tyrell' and other disses hahaha), legowelt (whose sound sucked unfortunately, until the last 3 or 4 songs)...came back after dinner to hear jaylib and pbw, all very nice, pbw played lots of nice disco and funk stuff. jaylib were jaylib! sunday, arrived to hear the end of louis haiman's liveset on the mainstage, which was phenomenal, beautiful and deep, very very transmat..then over to duplex who were excellent as well. took a break to go to submerge, came back for orlando, great tracks and great mixing, terrible sound...also there were so many ravers down there it got me really depressed. so it was nice to watch ron trent for awhile (where there were virtually no phatdawgs, and great sound), lots of great prescriptiony house and loads of other good stuff i'm not remembering now...jamie principle, fingers, a dancemania thing or two, eddy grant, etc. then tried to watch some francois k, he started with ur but from there it was really hard and boring. wish i had known T!M is frame six, and owner of grammar, he has great taste in techno and makes very very nice tracks himself, but we left without checking.. monday, aardvarck and all out k were very nice, lots of hiphop and dope broken beats from aardvarck, lots of nice house from all out k. nice relaxed audience/atmosphere. kenny larkin played a couple nice tracks but was mostly banging and boring, and the sound was once again too loud/bassy (very good during aardvarck and christiaan tho). kai alce was great, loads of good house and old disco etc..genesis live was great, superb drummer, great band all around, they performed that betty wright song from the omar s. record..missed most of electrofunk live but what i saw was so dope...kevin saunderson was godawful, started with drexciya intro from drexciya 4, then spastik, and big fun and red 3 were in there somewhere, but everything else was trance/progressive, realyy bad...kevin reynolds was insane good...probably the liveset i enjoyed the most of the whole festival. recloose started with some nice songs, no ufo's, carl craig remix of la funk mob, but it was time to leave for the ur party. afterpartiesminto was a madman at the wheel fri night and we arrived at the green light go party way too late to get in, so we went over to the ayro/recloose/john arnold etc one, and had a great time. nice interesting stuff from ayro (great live keys!), extrmely good liveset from john arnold! i love all his housier stuff especially, and just a great performer..nice to run into the rh guys here too. only negative was that there was some sleazy gay dude in the audience who kept trying to bump n grind with me and several others from my crew.. no afterparties for us sat night, just late night denny's. sunday night tho, novamen and ultradyne (we missed jan d, mesu kasumai, jan d, counter couture, and polarius/speculator)...just an incredible time, awesome stuff from novamen, better than their movement performance, and ultradyneinsanethe sound was thru some pretty pathetic peavey speakers unfortunately, but the quality of the music...damnvery close runner up to the ur partyas for that, not even worth describing, deserves better words than i can say..best liveset i've ever seen, best show i've ever been to... techno brings people together was fun too, shake was cracking everybody up...i agree with that guy. nice dj'ing from strand, nice songs from scan 7, very tasty food made by trackmaster lou, great set from mitch walcott, great people. as always meeting people and seeing frieds was the real highlight of the weekend, nice to finally meet matt macQ! jwan! jason! shawn! curt, adam, tom and all the other technoirs, kent, john o, alex lugo, toronto and vancouver peeps, laura and silvan from paris...and to see again dan sicko, shake, yusef, kj, gabe, bethany, tommy, everbody..and especially all the dutch people who spent most of the time with, stefan (who had all his gear with him but nowhere to play! :(), aida, kj, danny, ingmar and overdose, corine, christiaan and antal, chris & john, mike kivits...and really great hanging with philip mcgarva mr microworld the whole weekend..deeply regret not getting to meet robin and chris, and that alex, stewart, tom (?) and everybody else couldnt make it.. my only real complaints are that it was very frustrating that the sound on the underground stage consistently sucked, and that the overriding rule for the sound guys was to make everything as banging as possible...but generally, is
Re: (313) new Carl Craig mix
whats up with everyone loving that angola remix so much? I dig it too, but the pepe bradock get down dub version is sooo much better IMO, although not for DJing I guess. that much better? i like them both but the cc mix is techno. the pepe is less different from the original somehow, more smooth downtempo kinda thing. I'd like to hear the ultramarine remixes, as I've been a UM fan since like 94 and swas disappointed when they stopped putting out tracks. the ultrarmarine mixes are great! the other realsoon releases are great too. um has been putting out new tracks under new names ;) _ Learn to simplify your finances and your life in Streamline Your Life from MSN Money. http://special.msn.com/money/0405streamline.armx

It already has. Less vinyl is selling, and fewer titles are being pressed. i'd like to see evidence linking declining vinyl sales to mp3s. anybody else read the oberholzer-gee report? it's excellent. it begins by shooting down the assumption that every mp3 downloaded is a sale lost, which is the flaw of every other report i've seen which blames mp3's..google it. mp3 marketing - first of all, how do you compete with free (soulseek)? i know there are various little gimmicks/bonuses you can use, but it seems like most people would just get it free...second of all, is there ANY money in mp3's? i don't know the specifics of iPod, but the offers i've seen from lesser known mp3 sites are along the lines of 40% net (60% to the site). at $2 a download it would take 1000 sales to make 80 bucks. it's better than nothing, but... _ FREE pop-up blocking with the new MSN Toolbar get it now! http://toolbar.msn.click-url.com/go/onm00200415ave/direct/01/

Electric Avenue was a decent song until you heard it 1,323,456 times. yes i know exactly what you mean... gut-wrenching feelings and raw production.. but at the same time very modern and deep. does that make any sense? sure! there's definitely a conceptual argument there. but even beyond that, i hear some of the same sort of notes, tonality, musical ideas, in some stuff. i dont know enough about music to describe it more clearly. but for instance theo's "heal yourself and move" has a piano riff that very much reminds me of old blues...and tho it's not uniquely techno, portamento and pitchbend can remind back to blues a lot...i dunno, i hear a lot of the same feelings coming thru, but maybe it's just because i have heard so much blues.. _ Mothers Day is May 9. i kinda agree about the limitations of your set when you're a dj on tour but it's not as bad as what you guys are saying. a record crate holds a lot of records, enough for 3 completely different sets at least, mix and match and you have i dunno 6 or 7 pretty different sets. also a fun thing to do is go record shopping before your gig if you have time, en play those records that night. guess you gotta have room to carry them to your next gig tho. i was recently in atlanta for a show and me and the other guys i was with hit a recordstore beforehand and found a bunch of dancemania and trax for $1 each. that stuff was almost all that got played that night...fun...guess you don't do that so much when you're a bigshot with a big paycheck tho and people are paying $25 to get in or whatever, but i dont think that applies to most dj's or most occasions..whatever... _ Check out the coupons and bargains on MSN Offers! http://youroffers.msn.com

Re: (313) the future
therefore it could very well be that you are surrounded by much more futuristic music then you'd think, you just don't recognise it as such, as it's not compattible with your view of the future. i thought this was very well put. i don't have much of a conception of the future right now, my vision is pretty nearsighted. which sort of makese sense as technology has stopped making distinct advances and instead moves along in subtle improvements. in the 80's there was the jump into the digital age, now everything seems just further refinements of existing technology, pushing digital further. socially/politically, things are just sort of stagnant these days, going nowhere, fermenting. so anyways it kind of fits somehow that much new music consists of refining or bulding upon past styles. there was a real energy of vision about the future in the 80's and early 90's. it may be in the past now, but things were just plain more futuristic then. because now futurism perpetuates a sense of the present, its a paradox. try looking to the future now and a concrete sense of the present overwhelms it. but the present is refining and reusing the past. so look to the past, and you end up in the present again, or with a retro idea of the future. retro futurism is the most powerful futurism right now, even if it's obsolete. or something. i'm confused. _ Lose those love handles! RE: (313) Re: () SIX NINE represses?
ah well, good points... i just dont care anymore or something i guess. or maybe i am too broke. if it was normal price i'd buy it, but since it's way marked up, no way. granted those of us selling records at normal wholesale price aren't making squat. but it just seems a little odd when you have even more rare chit getting repressed and sold at normal price, but oh this, this is special! it does smell of some kinda techno elitism or something to me. and is definitely taking advantage of collector mindset/fetishism, but if you're a collector or horny for this record, what do you care i guess. i still think you're being suckered, but if you're a willing sucker i guess you're not really a sucker. it's kinda sickly funny that putting a high price on something is actually a way to hype it up nowadays. pricing a repress as if it immediately shares the rarity of the original is a bit of a marketing trick, but if it works, hey. basic channel, clone, rephlex, environ, etc etc you guys missed out on the $$...doh! of course i want to get ahold of good music (that i dont have to have my computer on to listen to) and this makes me wish i could afford to be a collector. with my reasoning and my budget, there's no way i can feel ok buying this thing. it kinda bugs me but whatever. i'll look for it in the used bins etc. they'll end up there sooner or later whether they pressed a lot or a few anyways. there's plenty floating around now.. anyways thanks for the pov dave, you forgot to insult my mentality or appreciation for music tho... Well JT, all I can say is I've wanted this record for YEARS, if I see it in Gramaphone I will probably pick it up even for $16-17. I bet that there are a lot of people like me, I don't think we are getting played or jacked. Note that I already have it on MP3, but I love vinyl and I think this is really a seminal Detroit techno record, something worth owning for the rest of my life. I'm not buying it just because it is rare. Sure, maybe they pressed too many copies and the prices will come down - but how can we know if that is the case? And why not let an artist make a little extra money off a great record, he couldn't have made THAT MUCH on the original to begin with. Remember, people can find the mp3 for free. The value of vinyl is that people like me enjoy owning it despite the availability of mp3s. Sure I look for good deals buying records, but I do collect music that I really like just because I love it, and I'm willing to pay for this. The vinyl market is NOT for everyone, it is elitist by its very nature. High pricing for limited pressings of classics does make sense, as long as they don't press so many that the price turns out to be unsustainable and they can't sell all the copies produced. ~David -Original Message- From: J. so you dont like the record because its not good? i dont understand. if you were actually a music lover, i think youd be happy to finally get your hands on a good record that otherwise you wouldnt pay crazy loot for. i'm not a music lover. i was just playing. music is for the birds tweet tweet who said i didnt like the record? i just dont like the price. i've got better things to spend my money on, like, new stuff thats priced normally. i dont even buy old records for high prices, i find them cheap or i dont have them. there is too much great music out there that can be found cheap. stores arent smoking crack for the most part. they dont order things they think they wont be able to sell. i'd be interested in hearing back from somebody in detroit whether those 69's on the wall at recordtime sell or not. they didnt order many tho. excellent argument. i respond to hot air with hot air the repress is exactly identical to the original. how will they determine which it is? carbon dating a sample from the vinyl? yes wiseass you have to carbon date the vinyl. or look at the runout/label/sleeve. something about it will be different. if its truly identical, than the high price is even more shady -- based on the rarity of the original, which it has suddenly become itself, but widely available.. this is my point though. it would be bad if big name artists just started selling their records for more because they are who they are. putting a premium price on an established anthem is altogether different. which is the "established anthem" on 4 jazz funk? my machines? anthem? i dont think thats quite the right word somehow..more like sought-after techno collector stuff...hence the pricetag...and is this not just because it's carl craig? elite techno stuff? all that old trax stuff was wa bigger than this...and i think farley trumps craig as far as big names...and those represses were cheap.. anthems dont tend to have an inflated pricetag throw is 1000 times the anthem of anything on 4 jazz funk, but is priced normally. the price of the 69 is to take advantage of collectors. you can argue all you want, yes it's a great record to own, but you got played. of course it's no problem to you if it was worth (personally) what you paid for it. but in the larger context of the record business, it sucks and is a jack move..and its not normally how represses are handled. usually they are aimed at giving rare music a renewed availability and accessibility. the repress is cheap, the original stays valuable and rare and even more sought after...but the pricetage on this is jumping the gun. it's essentially calling a record "rare" even as it's hot off the presses and available everywhere, totally a marketing ploy. it's the record industry collapsing on itself, not looking for new listeners but to instead take existing customers (collectors especially) for all it can...while it can. because soon people will be aware that this record is not so hard to find anymore. there will be copies sitting in stores, the urgency will wear off. the collector demand will evaporate. it's a a gaaame, and i do not like these games ill bet you a ton of money on that. look at "shades of jae" by moodymann. that record has been repressed, even as recently as 5 what its worth and what people will pay for it are seperate things sometimes. i've sold records which arent worth a pile of beans for a decent little chunk on eBay. the record collecting business is very similar to comic book collecting. price trends are extreme, and shortlived. what might be "worth" $50 this year, in five years could be worth $5. or you might just find it for $1 in some secondhand store somewhere. some people only look to eBay...italo is crazy on there too. dirt cheap if you actually look for it. like, give a wantlist to somebody you know in nyc or chicago... im the sucker because i have a record i want? how does that make sense? IMO youre a sucker if you pass up a chance to buy a great it doesnt make sense, but you asked not me. you're asking yourself questions that dont make sense, which really doesnt make sense. it didnt make sense to pay $17 for 4 jazz funk when we could (and did) spend less money on a couple fragile represses, an original copy of voice of q, and classic old dancemania chit. we got an entire dj set of classics for less than $17. we probably would have bought 4 jazz funk if it was priced normally. if we were eagerly after it, maybe we would have paid the $17. and be happy to have it. but it still doesnt justify the pricing. considering what we could spend our money on instead, it made a whole lot more sense to just hope to run into a cheaper copy some other time record because of a $10 price increase. dont go out to eat one night. dont buy a couple drinks next time youre at the club watching deejays spin. $10 isnt $100, there are so many ways that money can be spent that i
RE: (313) Re: () SIX NINE represses?
but will you get this record? its certainly not easy to come by used for nothing. im sure some people will have their stories, but in a smaller city like pittsburgh, theres pretty much zero chance of me coming up with that record. who cares. i'll get a dozen other records that are equally good. i'm a music lover not a collector..in most cases.. . demand IS that great though! like i said=, all the distros with it that ive seen (unique, watts, and 161) were out of it within hours of having it in. and that was at a price of $10 wholesale! well we'll see how well the stores can actually sell it. none of the people i was with at recordtime looked twice at it. too much other good chit to buy for 1/3 the price when the only other way to get it is through ebay, its worth that by far. and i dont think this record needed any more hype than it already has from being an excellent record. fart also, AFAIK theres no difference between the repress and the original. in 20 years, no one will know or even remember which one is which. thats a completely false assertion. thats what record collecting is all about. my dad's been selling rare records for 40 yearsand i've been selling stuff on ebay for quite awhile. music lovers dont care about pressings etc, but this chit isnt priced for music lovers. but it will be soon enough...in 20 years it will be very easy to remember which pressing is which because the original will cost a fortune and the repress will be affordable...as it should be now. the peacefrog joints are a whole other story. those are tunes with no prior track record. i think that practice is a little weak, but the artist roster has plenty of draw. it's really not so different. just sought after artists instead of sought after tracks.. much more willing to pay for records that i know and want that are hard to get ahold of. their rarity and goodness is established, not created. a repress is not rare and does not deserve that price, the end. you dont press a rare record, it becomes rare over time. the rarity of the original record is established. the inflated cost of a repress is just trying to quickly take advantage of the demand for the original. it's a cheap trick. guarantee you the repress will be worth less than current wholesale price in 5 years. you're missing the point entirely. just because you can price something high and still sell it ok doesnt mean you are justified in doing so (by anything other than overzealous capitalism). clone could have priced their glass domain rerelease similarily, but didnt. because they are not trying to overcapitalize. your willingness to pay exorbitant prices does not excuse the jacked up pricetag...it makes you a sucker... it hasnt taken one tiny bit of joy out of me finally being able to own 4 jazz funk classics. if nothing else, im extremely excited. you got the collector itch in you, or a thick wallet -- i hope a thick wallet so you're still buying other stuff if pressing small numbers and charging high prices will convince people to repress hard to find classics, im ALL FOR IT. if carl cool, you're the one they're selling to then.. repressed each of the retroactive records at that price, id buy each and every one of them. really? i sure wouldnt. they're not all great, some sound very dated now. but following this new pricing strategy down the line, why not just repress 100 copies of the retroactive stuff and sell them for $100 each. make $10k off 100 records, yea! can you still not see why that sucks? from a music lover's pov, it sucksfor the collectors, for the stores it's great...i pretty much make my living selling stuff to compulsive collectors, but i am not about to become one, i cant afford it... _ FREE pop-up blocking with the new MSN Toolbar get it now! http://toolbar.msn.com/go/onm00200415ave/direct/01/
RE: (313) Re: () SIX NINE represses?
what?? there's no reason for a gd repress to be $17. f that. i aint buying it. i'll wait to pick up a dozen other classics for the same money at a secondhand place. there's loads of other classics out there... i dont think there are many positive ramifications of pricing records this way. it is supply and demand yes, high price to make as much profit as possible because demand is not that great. those who want it want it bad enough to pay the retarded price. it's a kinda shady way to hype your product: it costs a lot -- it must be good! it's worth it! well maybe, but it's not worth 3 times the price of other new records, especially not for a repress. even from a collector standpoint..all glory is to the original pressing, traditionally represses arent worth much, they even devalue. you cant put a price on good music, but there is a standard price for records so... overall i think this trend stinks. leaves buyers with a smaller budget for other new records, gives these high-priced "classics", new peacefrogs etc, somewhat undue priority with your wallet. nice marketing trick but makes the vinyl market even more exclusive, and harder for smaller labels to stay in the game. generally takes some joy out of buying new records. whatever. props to clone for repressing glass domain with a normal pricetag. its supply and demand. even @ $10 and up from US distros, all the distros were out within hours of getting them in. i know my demand for the record was well over $17 (what i paid for it from submerge) but well under what a used copy goes for on ebay. ill be happy to get the other 69 records for the same price as well. now carl needs to repress those retroactive records and a couple more early planet e joints to make me happy. tom andythepooh.com _ Limited-time offer: Fast, reliable MSN 9 Dial-up Internet access FREE for 2 months! http://join.msn.com/?page=dept/dialup&pgmarket=en-us&ST=1/go/onm00200361ave/direct/01/

I've asked Carl Craig about this repress last friday (@ nouveau casino -Paris) and he said the three "69" records are going to be repressed, but he did not mention a date. Re: (313) what is Detroit techno ...
i think it's easiest to describe detroit techno if you describe the prototype records and dont worry about how it's evolved and branched off over the years. ie strings (!), soulfulness, depth, experimentation, futurism etc etc. you dont have to worry about giving a picture perfect description. thats what people have ears for. and like any other genre of music you need a bit of context to get the point across. somebody who is unfamiliar with dance music isnt going to be immediately open to the nuances, they will need some reference points. screw it, just give them a copy of techno rebels and a tape/cd. that's what i've done more than once. jt _ Get rid of annoying pop-up ads with the new MSN Toolbar FREE! http://toolbar.msn.com/go/onm00200414ave/direct/01/
Re: (313) This list / Iridite 04
Iridite 4. I just picked this up when I found a white label sitting around at Gramaphone, after being impressed by the snippet on the Submerge website. I just want to say that this record is GREAT. Exactly the kind of techno record I'm looking for but can never find - well produced, very futuristic type sound, deep with lots of musical substance, and at the same time enough drive it can work on the dancefloor with a little more uptempo set. It is so hard to find records like this. A perfect extension of the 313 techno concept. If anyone else knows of records along these lines let me know. I like deep and sophisticated but I don't necessarily want my records down-tempo I guess, and I'm still more partisan to the techno vibe than any jazzy-soul-house type mood (with some exceptions of course!). there's a new iridite record on down low you can get via submerge -- hasnt hit real distribution yet; was supposed to be released via rh next week and a week later thru u.s. distrib but it may have been pushed back. this one is all pretty uptempo stuff. and i agree iridite stuff is both classic and futuristic sounding, which is what makes me love it... jt _ Get tax tips, tools and access to IRS forms all in one place at MSN Money! http://moneycentral.msn.com/tax/home.asp

i could be wrong but i thought deepchord were based out of boston. i like a lot of deepchord stuff, but i wouldnt put it on the same level as bc/cr/etc because they are seriously lacking in the bassline department -- great dubby chords and nice beats, but missing lowend...many releases have no basslines at all. altho i guess that doesnt hurt them in the mix Deepchord is a Detroit label I think (so it is 313 ;-) - I found their first one about 5 years ago now, so they've been around a pretty long time, but they are really against any kind of promotion, so their EPs tend to filter into the stores pretty subtly. (313) EFA is bankrupt
Dear Business Partners, with deepest regrets we herewith must let you know that we have been forced to file bankruptcy today. This is based on the developments of the recent weeks during which we have tried everything to avoid this step by downsizing our staff, restructuring all distribution methods and channels, negotiating with third parties, particularly with several groups of possible investors, yet - sadly - to no avail. All our attempts to find any other means to keep afloat in times of collapsing markets have remained unsuccessful. Since it has not been possible to reach possible solutions and it has become obvious that we were no longer able to stay in business when relying on our own strength. We expect the relevant court to name a receiver within the very future. We do hope that jointly with that receiver we may be in a position where EFA´s key business areas can be saved and restructured. However, it is unclear if our desire to reestablish EFA will be rewarded by the receiver´s perspective. We thank you for all the years of cooperation and the trust in EFA. Re: (313) Cybernetic Broadcast System... one crackhead's Eulogy
hey matt and about italo being dead, or overblown, what!? pah!!If it ain't dead yet after 20+ years of weirdo collectors scouring it all.. it's not going to just up and die anytime soon.. I'd say by comparison, 'glitch' is rapidly approaching the terminally ill/boring stage, but that's just me :P hhaha! glitch was always boring :P original italo is certainly still full of underrated, unheard classics etc, but there is some pretty weak newer italo-inspired stuff coming out...or maybe i just follow too closely. i know alden tyrell is i-f's buddy, but that last record he did, knockers or whatever, sounded like generic bad italo, generic octaved bassline, just weak. his first record, love explosion, was by far the best. legowelt is so prolific its insane, and still does tons of great music under many names, but the dark nrg legowelt sound has been run into the ground imo. he has done so many records in that style, but the first 2 or 3 were easily the best. i dunno i just hear a lot of stuff that tries to tip its hat to italo by using some pretty generic octaved basslines, it drives me nuts, to my ears its really stale. a symptom of getting really into older music like disco and italo is that you start ignoring the cheesy parts of songs and just focus on the parts you really like...a lottt of italo was crap, and as it gets more popular, you hear a lot of crap italo...doesnt mean its dying, but whoaaa hold on its not all classic... some of those new Pigna records coming out of Italy are hot!! The Francisco tracks, and the Raiders of The Lost Arp tracks i only have one, funk 005 (drive) and its pretty good...the francisco mix is by far the best..i was surprised that it leans as much towards techno as it does! i am definitely trying to hunt down some more...suggestions? also you could argue the $tinkworx and Macho Cat Garage / Legowelt and etc. etc. are all connected in some way to that era... it's definitely living on. haha well i should think you could argue that! stinki has more than one song with "italo" in the title (subtle!), and the name macho cat garage is sort of a take off on the old italo group named gay cat park, and also the mis-heard chorus of an old italo song...on the viewlexx mcg record, there is a song "m-invasion" which is a send-off to scotch's penguin invasion. legowelt, besides the italo/nrg inspired stuff he is mostly known for, has also done some awesome more slowjam italo, like the first song on the squadra blanco album, and the upcoming beyond the congo record has a nice one too. he is wa inspired by old italian horror film soundtracks (not just goblin either), italo and early chi house...my favorite italo sorta stuff is still made by legowelt, catnip, mcg, and of course i-f...legowelt is so prolific and tries so many different sounds i really think he is the prince of the italo rediscovery, if i-f is king.. have i made utterly no sense yet?? Anyway, respect to I-f! whatever his reasons i think it's silly to just publicly speculate on what *might* have been his reasons.. hell it's his prerogative and I'm sure we've not seen the last of that madman... that you can bet on for sure. haha..yes, respect! i wasnt trying to speculate, i had actually heard reasons and forgotten, but kj cleared it up...i'm sure we've not seen the last as well.. btw the new/next comtron on blacklabel has a vey nice electro-italo cut...dope dope dope. it easily makes up for the electroclashy vox in another of the tracks :P jt _ Dream of owning a home? hey kj In an interview he did with listmember Rebelbass he said that one of the reasons he quit dj-ing was because his job as a dj was done, italo was no longer a dirty word and people made it and played it again. ahh thats much better than the elitist 'italo is too popular' reason, altho it's sort of the same sentiment twisted in a positive way. somehow i dont think that can be enough to make him quit dj'ing for good, i hope. not that many people make/play it.. _ Dream of owning a home? i have no problem with people making valid criticism. i hate seeing someone who is just being ignorant trying to tear down something do great like he could do better. pshaw. good luck man. when's the yearly ATOMLY ELECTRONIC MUSIC FESTIVAL gonna start featuring groundbreaking performers from all over the world? ha. aww man go easy tho. dabrye, amp fiddler, pole, dwele, detroit experiment, liquid liquid, esg, midwest product, john arnold, ayro, double helix, norma jean bell, time:space, etc. those are just the people that i caught playing live. thats not some joker business there. i think no it's decent, but a little light on detroit techno and electro. dwele and njb had already played previous years as well. pole's last album was terrible. anyways i didnt go so i cant comment a whole lot, except to say as nice as that is the balance has still shifted towards dj's, and the live acts, as good as they may be, dont pack the punch of the first two years rosters..the third year left a taste in my mouth bad enough to not go last year, hopefully it was betetr than the third..yeah? hey so why cant kraftwerk play? coachella is good enough but not the d?? bitches! :P _ Check out the great features of the new MSN 9 Dial-up, with the MSN Dial-up Accelerator. http://click.atdmt.com/AVE/go/onm00200361ave/direct/01/

Since >then, though, I feel like the festival has shifted its focus from the >groundbreaking and forward-thinking to the nostalgiac and established. i dont think its that easy to blame the roster for any decline in demf success/fun. the first year it was fresh and new. ford was running commercials on tv with model 500 and plugging the festival in mainstream publications. there was as much or more nostalgic/established stuff the first year as any other. i just hope for a focus on live music. artists actually performing their own stuff adds so much more energy and vitality and personality to the experience. i think. the first year seemed to have an excellent balance of live stuff and dj'ing, with the balance shifting towards dj's ever since. i mean 1st year you had scion, poobahs, dbx, adult, guy called gerald, scan 7, puzzlebox showcase, etc etc etc all live! there's been good live stuff every year but they really covered the spectrum 1st year. last year only a few names on the roster even had "live" next to their name, leaving me to guess or just hope that some of the others would be live too...but i couldnt afford to go just guessing and hoping. hype it up! accentuate the personalities in electronic music! put on something to show the uninitiated its real music not just dj/club culture jt _ Click here for a FREE online computer virus scan from McAfee. http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963

The fact of the matter is that it is techno music coming from Detroit therefore it is Detroit Techno... > well that says it about as good as i could. > > i wasnt making any statement about race, i was responding to greg earle's > email about what derrick might have meant by his comments about techno being > dead. i put my comments about the soul of detroit techno vs matt dears music > in the form of a question because obviously, depending on where you wanna > draw the line of what is the "it" in detroit techno, the > sound/personality/soul/whatever which definites it as a style/sound, matt > dear may or may not have much to do with it. and i might point out that if > you are "innovating" and using different sounds compared to "blank" style > (classic detroit techno), that would seem to indicate you are on the fringes > of the style and might not be easily defined as that style anymore. > personally i have not heard any of his music that i've liked, which is not > to say its bad, i just dont like what i've heard, and it doesnt have any of > the character which means detroit techno to me. sorry to offend m dear fans > who hear something different, and those whose idea of what is really > "detroit" differs from mine. > jt > > >-- Original Message -- > >From: "Derek Plaslaiko." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > > > > >the fact that matthew is white has nothing to do with the soul of > >his > > >music. if you think that, then you better be thinking the same > >about joy > > >division, liquid liquid, francois k, or recloose, even. > > > >i dont think it has anything to do with the guy being white. i > >like all those artists you mentioned. i just dont dig matt dear's > >records almost at all. that first spectral 12" i think it was was > >alright, other than that i havent liked anything else. and its not > >just me: we got one copy of his LP in at the record shop i work at > >and it hasnt sold. we sell lots of "soulful" dance music made by > >both white and black people (as well as asian and hispanic) but > >not a soul (pun intended) has found something interesting enough > >in his album to buy it. no one who buys the recloose or the > >titonton or the alton miller records that we stock has been > >motivated to buy it. i feel like theres a pretty good amount of > >undeserved hype behind this guy, and i think that alot of people > >can see through that. who cares how many stars rolling stone gave > >him? all i know is that amp fiddler's music is not in any way > >groundbreaking but we cant keep a single 12" with his name on it > >in stock. people who are into hiphop and r+b have been buying his > >records as well as all the techno and house heads who have known > >about him for a little while now. matt dear's record will probably > >sit there for months, if not forever. its too bad because i do > >like alot of what ghostly does (like 75% or so, the other 25% is > >kinda trying to hard maybe) but i feel like they picked the wrong > >artist to get all hyped up about. the midwest product and dabrye > >stuff is so much better on pretty much every level. > > > >as for why it happens to be a white guy who gets the props from > >mainstream music mags for his great "techno" record while other > >people who make great records who are black dont get the props, > >thats something that might need to be examined. a quick glance at > >my little sister's one recent rolling stone mag revealed reviews > >of these artists: crystal method (is it 1997 again?), LCD > >soundsystem, michael mayer, and lfo. reguardless of your opinions > >of them, isnt it a little strange that theyre all stark white? > > > >tom > > > > > >andythepooh.com > > > > > > > > > > _ > Check out the new MSN 9 Dial-up fast & reliable Internet access with prime > features! http://join.msn.com/?pgmarket=en-us&page=dialup/home&ST=1 > > > This is my signature... _ There are now three new levels of MSN Hotmail Extra Storage! RE: AW: (313) Derrick May quote and the Death of Techno
well that says it about as good as i could. i wasnt making any statement about race, i was responding to greg earle's email about what derrick might have meant by his comments about techno being dead. i put my comments about the soul of detroit techno vs matt dears music in the form of a question because obviously, depending on where you wanna draw the line of what is the "it" in detroit techno, the sound/personality/soul/whatever which definites it as a style/sound, matt dear may or may not have much to do with it. and i might point out that if you are "innovating" and using different sounds compared to "blank" style (classic detroit techno), that would seem to indicate you are on the fringes of the style and might not be easily defined as that style anymore. personally i have not heard any of his music that i've liked, which is not to say its bad, i just dont like what i've heard, and it doesnt have any of the character which means detroit techno to me. sorry to offend m dear fans who hear something different, and those whose idea of what is really "detroit" differs from mine. jt -- Original Message -- From: "Derek Plaslaiko." <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> >the fact that matthew is white has nothing to do with the soul of his >music. if you think that, then you better be thinking the same about joy >division, liquid liquid, francois k, or recloose, even. i dont think it has anything to do with the guy being white. i like all those artists you mentioned. i just dont dig matt dear's records almost at all. that first spectral 12" i think it was was alright, other than that i havent liked anything else. and its not just me: we got one copy of his LP in at the record shop i work at and it hasnt sold. we sell lots of "soulful" dance music made by both white and black people (as well as asian and hispanic) but not a soul (pun intended) has found something interesting enough in his album to buy it. no one who buys the recloose or the titonton or the alton miller records that we stock has been motivated to buy it. i feel like theres a pretty good amount of undeserved hype behind this guy, and i think that alot of people can see through that. who cares how many stars rolling stone gave him? all i know is that amp fiddler's music is not in any way groundbreaking but we cant keep a single 12" with his name on it in stock. people who are into hiphop and r+b have been buying his records as well as all the techno and house heads who have known about him for a little while now. matt dear's record will probably sit there for months, if not forever. its too bad because i do like alot of what ghostly does (like 75% or so, the other 25% is kinda trying to hard maybe) but i feel like they picked the wrong artist to get all hyped up about. the midwest product and dabrye stuff is so much better on pretty much every level. as for why it happens to be a white guy who gets the props from mainstream music mags for his great "techno" record while other people who make great records who are black dont get the props, thats something that might need to be examined. a quick glance at my little sister's one recent rolling stone mag revealed reviews of these artists: crystal method (is it 1997 again?), LCD soundsystem, michael mayer, and lfo. reguardless of your opinions of them, isnt it a little strange that theyre all stark white? tom andythepooh.com _ Check out the new MSN 9 Dial-up fast & reliable Internet access with prime features! http://join.msn.com/?pgmarket=en-us&page=dialup/home&ST=1
RE: AW: (313) Derrick May quote and the Death of Techno
not only is there no real new generation of black techno, but i mean matthew dear...who cares if he's popular, does it really have any soul or connection to the character of classic detroit techno? not that i can hear...just happens to be from detroit..and i mean look at what ends up under the "techno" listing on new release lists etc...first, there's not much, 2nd what there is is 80--90% lifeless dj tool crap... I guess you're right. I can understand their disappointment. -Ursprüngliche Nachricht- Von: Greg Earle [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Gesendet: Dienstag, 3. I don't know if there's going to be a next > generation of young musicians coming through to follow up in our > footsteps." he really meant "I don't know if there's going to be a next generation of young BLACK Detroit musicians coming through to follow up in our footsteps." I've had discussions on several disparate occasions with Black Detroit artists (Rob Hood, Kenny Larkin, Bone, etc.) and they all bemoaned to me the fact that there seemed to be no young Black cats coming up through the ranks - that all the young brothers were just interested in Hip-Hop now, and didn't care about Techno. They all understood why things were the way they were, but it made them sad nevertheless. Obviously I don't live in Detroit so I don't know all the current players on the scene, but off the top of my head I couldn't think of anyone younger than, say, Sean Deason (chime in Sean!) or Kenny Dixon Jr. (or our own Jwan, if we stretch Detroit over to Pittsburgh :-) ). (One thing that triggered my thinking of this line of reasoning was listening to Kenny's old Dark Comedy track "Without A Sound (Silent Mix)" from "Corbomite Maneuver". Re: (313) things, and other things
earlier this week i spotted the east island record on down low going for $14 in the usa, which is twice what it should be...it had been exported and then re-imported (there is no need to import) by mistake. and i dont think it was any greedy motives on anyone's part, just a mistake. luckily it was not many copies.. so, perhaps some shops are worried they wont be able to get enough copies of axis stuff and are so eager to get it they are doing some export/re-import mess...picking up the record from overseas distribs, or anyays, not getting it from the distrib with the best price as they should. the problem is since jeff mills is so popular, people will actually still buy at hugely inflated cost -- and i dont think anyone is making any more money for it. even jeff mills sales are probably hurt by this...maybe email axis and let them root out the problem. and/or find out which distribs are carrying the axis stuff at normal wholesale, tell your shops carrying the overpriced copies that they can be had for cheap from that distrib and they should return their pricey copies to the distrib they got it from. eventually that distrib will send their copies back to axis..or, wait for the fanboys and techno upper-class to buy the marked up copies and have your shop re-order from the better distrib. > note. THAT > HE CHARGES TOO MUCH FOR HIS RECORDS, THATS ALL> But he doesn't - distributors and shops are the ones that put the price up - if you want cheap Axis buy from his site not shops...He's not to blame for the market place...lets not spend another week going over this, please... _ High-speed usersbe more efficient online with the new MSN Premium Internet Software. http://join.msn.com/?pgmarket=en-us&page=byoa/prem&ST=1

Re: (313) Ableton Live mixes
there's also a "gapless" plugin for winamp which makes mp3s play seamlessly. i assume it just buffers the first few seconds of the next song when it senses the current one is about to end. I dont use Ableton, but i have experienced this "MP3 silence gap" problem, since i work on Macromedia Flash. You can dynamically import external MP3 into your Flash movie. But forget it, if you wanna make a loop with it... While, its possible to import a WAV when you work on your source. And then Flash use its own internal MP3 encoder to export your movie as a SWF file. And i dunno which codec is used, but the loop is now in MP3 and is exactly the same length! No gaps! It loops perfectly. No idea how they did it...But for me it only means one thing..ITS POSSIBLE!! Id like it to be the defacto standard!! (And, yes its really encoded in MP3). - KiDD*e* - Original Message - From: "/0" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "'313'" <313@hyperreal.org> Sent: Friday, January 23, 2004 6:14 PM Subject: Re: (313) Ableton Live mixes > 1-2 percent adds up. > > this is the reason ableton hasnt done it, check their forums > > > - Original Message - > From: "Ronny Pries" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> > To: "'313'" <313@hyperreal.org> > Sent: Friday, January 23, 2004 10:59 AM > Subject: RE: (313) Ableton Live mixes > > > > we're talking about maybe 1-2% per mp3 stream. that is not the argument. > > besides, my notebook hd is already the max. size limit. > > > > on the other hand it's simply impossible to play with mp3 loops because > > mp3 isn't gapless (adds a few ms silence before and after the data > > area). i would just like to use ableton as cut-tool which i want to use > > for extracting loops from tracks. that's the only point where i would > > like to open mp3s. i bet that ableton will surely come up with a > > solution for the cut thing, most sound editors really lack on features > > when it comes about cutting loops from areas without drums (eh, where's > > the exact start point?). > > > > cheerio, > > ronny > > > > > you dont want the overhead of decoding multiple mp3 streams > > > in realtime (by default, live reads the wav in realtime > > > each time it plays, a lot like a record player... )applying > > > pitch or time shifting, and then output as an uncompressed > > > stream. you can upgrade hard drives with much more ease than > > > a CPU, and ableton can read from CD or dvd, which helps (cd > > > or dvd of .wav) > > > > > > -Joe > > > > _ Get a FREE online virus check for your PC here, from McAfee. http://clinic.mcafee.com/clinic/ibuy/campaign.asp?cid=3963
