[AsburyPark] Looking for 2 manikins!
Hi everyone.. Havn't been on here in months... Just skimmed through about 500 messages. Off topic, but I need 2 manikins for a Halloween display. Anyone know of any local? Cheap? I don't care what shape their in, since they will be clothed. Thanks. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! Re: [AsburyPark] Save GRock
Havn't posted in awhile... I remember the original station when I was in HS, FM106.3. That was a good station... Then it sold and out came G rock. G rock was pretty bad when it first came out, for a few years actually... But It got better. I turned on the station the other day unaware of the change.. Wow, it's pure garbage! In time it may get better, the same way G rock did. Who knows. But it's already off to a bad since they are promoting a cheese based music style. G rock differed, they did suck at first, but at least they started out with heart promoting what the station had alwasy been about. Who knows, we will see what happens. Re: [AsburyPark] Save GRock
Like MIke just said, there are no hosts yet, so it has that cheesey sound to it. G Rock had the same thing when they first came out, most stations do until they find real hosts. I don't think its likely any of the previous hosts will carry over. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Why is it we miss a simple attraction to AP???
And why must everything be designed in 'suburban-stucco- modern' architechture ? I'm still picturing that bandstand building, how badly it was butchered architecturally. And how easy it would have been to preserve it as the really unique piece of AP that it is. It would still be occupied by the same businesses. Nothing would be different except it would look like its supposed to, like it was designed to be. I don't mind the modern boardwalk buildings. I like them. Were the previous buildings made of brick really that different then what was going up around them at the time? I don't know, so i'm asking. It seems like those types of bricks were popular during the time period. Not a stand out matieral, that separted the boardwalk from other buildings around towns and citys. I'm speaking about matiearls, not design. Preservation is one thing, but to say it would still be occupied by the same businesses is crazy. It was empty other then HOJO? HOJO's days were numbered as it was, not because of it's location, but the whole chain itself. I'm not up to date on how things were left with the bandshell. I'm still thinking work was promissed on the lower half, and the upper half was set for a later date? [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! and yeah its been busy...its actually quite easy to change your preferences so that you don't get any mail or limited. i don't get any emails, just jump into the fertile pond when i feel like it. No one should have to set their mail differently. The point was If you want to talk about politics, post on a different group. When I start getting 200 plus messages of wars between different posters, with no regards to AP, then it's crazy. I don't care really, it's an exciting time, but hopefully it will die down on this board soon and get back to the issues most of us joined for. I can almost garentee in a few months someones going to post something unrelated and get yelled at for it But all these current posts are sopose to slide by as all right? Re: [AsburyPark] How to change your preferences
I think your missing the point, but not sure. I havn't been reading all these messages because I can tell by the subject line what their about. Just the fact that it's annoying to scroll down through 100's of messages each day. And not seeing any messages about anything AP based. I think having the messages sent to your email is easier. There was a time not too long ago when all the messages hooked onto each other... People were talking, and you needed to follow. Not jump onto the web every so often to catch up on what's going on. Because then you'd really be lost. There are also ways to block certain members from sending mail? But i'm not sure. I've never done it. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! Re: [AsburyPark] Re: OMG - WTF - Again !
If you don't think you will succeed you shouldn't even think of opening any business. There is a difference between a positive outlook and an unrealistic outlook. During the winter months the only thing I have seen on the boardwalk is a cold ocean wind. The point was, maybe they do think they can succeed. Time will tell. I think it still may be too early, because there's nothing else out there. If the Casino were open, with year round activities/stores, then I think more people would be around the area on a daily basis. More chances of people hanging out. More chances of customers. Re: [AsburyPark] Re: OMG - WTF - Again !
Some people on the boardwalk have unreal expectations. I was in the candy store near the casino and the people that own that think that they will have enough traffic in the middle of the winter to be open 7 days a week. Well, if you were the owner of that business, wouldn't you have a positive outlook towards the future? It may be too soon for something like that. Who knows. Those are the types of places kids seem to gather at. If there were other things to do on or near the boardwalk, a place like that could do well. But with what's out there now, I don't see many people wondering in off the frozen boardwalk to buy candy. We will see. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! Re: [AsburyPark] Parking Meters
I used the parking meters for the first time a few days ago. I had no problem using the machine. It's pretty much straight foward Enter your number... pay.. hit the green botton and take your paper as record.. The only problem I see is their locations. It doesn't make sence that you'd have to walk in the opposite direction that you want to go in, just to pay you're meter. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Metropolitan site,,,,
Some said this before, but I don't know how true it is. Maybe because the motel part is built so close to the road that it's worth leaving? Meaning if you were to start from nothing, you'd never be able to build that close again. I don't know. Also, even though the motel part may not look good, I bet it's in great shape considering. It's cost efficient sometimes to renovate and add onto something, over starting from nothing. Money, Time. [Non-text portions of this message have been removed] Yahoo! Re: [AsburyPark] parking tickets - I'm amazed!
The meters in Red Bank shut off at 8pm or something, right? Also, most beach town take away their meter parking in the fall and winter months. Although I guess pier village in LB has theirs year round now.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Just visited AP for the first time
There used to be a visitors center in the 1st Ave pavillion. Forget to look if it is still there - group? I think the maps and info should be available and visible at the beach badge stationsor put a big visitors kiosk in the middle of the BW. I'm almost positive that's no longer there.
Re: [AsburyPark] Water Park
It looks good in my opinion. Havn't seen it in a few days though, but things were being installed the last time I checked it out. I think it will give the element of fun that the boardwalk is lacking so far. It will be bring new memories and maybe at the same time help spark old ones.
Re: [AsburyPark] tides hotel
I see we will have another hotel joining the mix. On the web and they are listed for the upcoming oyster festival. More proof that Asbury is on the way back. Tides Hotel, what do you mean?
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Complaints? Negativity?
There's lots of old clubs that could come back . The Saint, in my day, was the Clover Club. I miss the Clover Club. I didn't know the building was ever anything other then The Saint. Hmmm... This could explain the neon clover over the door?
Re: [AsburyPark] Complaints? Negativity?
More recently, didnt they make a commitment to have the entire beachfront done by Memorial Day? Its almost Labor Day. Interesting indeed! A lot of things were sopose to be done by Memorial Day. Then they pushed things back till July 4th weekend. The set back was due to delays due to approvals and what not? I think they overestimated the amount of work and the time table they gave. Even with the extra weeks added, everything is still unfinished.
[AsburyPark] Railings
Railings on the 1st ave and 5th ave pavilions. Sweet! They look good. It was dark, but I saw them.Stainless steel, which goes along with the modern design. Although weren't the ones on the 5th ave already painted orange? They painted the extension piece on top to match the orange a few weeks ago. I wonder if they painted the new railings on the 5th to match the orange? Seems odd that they would. I'll check it out in the light. Yahoo! Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Railings
Great to hear... finally. Its been a long time coming. That lattice just was awful. I would think the railings will be painted orange in the coming days to match... they wont leave it two toned for sure. Are they on the 1st floor along of 5th ave on the deck too? Or the bandshell? The 5th ave has them upstairs on the ramp. Now that I think about it, the whole ramp looked different. Maybe they replaced them all? And the added piece was a temp job to meet codes? Who knows... I'll get a better look tomorrow. Also along all the Ocean ave stairs. The 1st ave also has some nice lighting on the 2nd story facing south. Shinning down. looks good.
Re: [AsburyPark] Clothes Pricing
Interesting. Of course, if you don't want to go there, don't However, it doesn't seem like the right kind of place for it's location! The point I was trying to make earlier was, unless something is going on, the boardwalk doesn't have that magic that it had the other night The current line up of stores on the boardwalk don't support that type of atmosphere. People won't walk around for hours looking at the same thing. A gym that's closed at night, and even if it were open, what good does it do to help bring life to the boardwalk?
Re: [AsburyPark] Don't let Tillie just fade away
I think the best idea when it comes to Tillie would be to create a new venue of sorts, that would showcase the image of Tillie. Maybe some sort of attraction on the boardwalk? Could he be worked into the new water park? Or beach club?? I like the images, but I never fully understood the concept of saving the actual concrete wall. Sure it's the original wall. Instead of showing the images on a chunk of wall, mounted somewhere, making it look like part of the past Why not show them new, in a new life, to carry on the history? Rather then showcase it as something of the past.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Clothes Pricing
Exactly. Why pick on them? THEY took a risk - MM and Style. I'm just waiting for a 50 or 70% sale. They have a cool bathing suit I've been eyeing. Yes, they took a big risk. Give them credit for that. Not everything is going to be for everyone. If you don't like it, don't go there! I just hope there are other types of boadwalk establishments that are more boardwalk in feeling and style. I don't want to see everything with the same high pried clothing store atmosphere. That doesn't create the boardwalk magic of last night. Not at all. The magic was brought on by the concert. Without it, the crowds would not be.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Clothes Pricing
That's true. Next year things will be different i'm sure. Also, since the goal was to have a year round beach front, There should be things open all fall and winter on the boardwalk... A bar/restaurant is planned where the previous Cabana Club was. It looks neat how the back of the bar seems to face the window.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Boardwalk is magic tonight
The North Side of North Beach – Facing Ocean Avenue that you ask about…. North Beach faces Ocean Avenue on the EAST side; get a reliable compass! (Then again, sandpiper got west and east confused.) HA! Yes, i noticed my mistake after i already hit send... Didn't bother to send out a correct email, figured people would figure it out on their own! My opinions havn't changed People still will only walk around for a period of time, before they get bored with what's there. The current types of places on the boardwalk in my opinion will only entertain folks for a certain amount of time. I don't see clothing stores being appropriate for the boardwalk.

HA! I noticed my typo after I had already hit send. Didn't bother to send out a correction message... Figured people would figure it out! My thoughts havn't changed... People still will only walk around and look at the current selection of stores for so long. After awhile they may get boarded with them and leave! There needs to be more Exciting things on the boardwalk from how I see it. A whole section of a pavilion is being used as a gym The gym is great, but at night when it's closed, then that means that whole section of the boardwalk is dark.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Insult to Injury - Bruce's car goes there
Whoa... No hard feelings here.. And nice background info there about yourself! Your posting name looked different to me for some reason. Sorry... My yahoo i.d. sometimes comes up different on my end. So does my messenger, it's strange. Yes, I know you're not new. However, I DID NOT post a question asking if a new museum should come to be. I simply commented a short comment on a previous post, that it may be a neat idea. Because it would showcase the history of AP's music scene. AP indeed does have one. I thought the music heritage scene of AP was something worth saving, or holding onto? I've seen numerous postings about how music was the best way to market AP, becasue it's real, and not something forced onto a place. It is and was AP.
[AsburyPark] 1st ave pavilion
Some of the finished 1st ave pavilion railings were installed a few days ago. The temp wood ones that faced the Ocean Ave side are gone. Also, the 2nd story balcony terrace railings are up! I think they changed styles from the original railings. There was a modern stainless steel railing post of some sort up there, but now it's gone. The upstairs railings also seem to match the mesh style of the 5th ave pavilion. It looks good. Yahoo! Re: [AsburyPark] Re: 1st ave pavilion
The railings do look good. They are a similar mesh style but not exactly like the 5th Avenue Pavilion ones. I would think the 5th Ave Pavilion railings will match the existing ones so they dont have to change the old one which they left up. Since some railings are going in, I would think the rest would be going in on the other pavilions soon. It will be interesting to see if railings go up on the bandshell. Similar to the 5th, yes. The 5th ave on es are staying. They added an extender piece on the top to bring it them up to code. However, they did paint them all orange again! The drawings called for black, and MM even talked about black.. I am hoping for the black. No, the railings most likely will not be going up on the upstairs bandshell... The plan calls for the sides to be squared off. I can't find the link (again), but i'm sure someone on here has it. You can see what i'm talking about.
Re: [AsburyPark] Sixth Avenue??
Whats the deal with 6th Avenue eastbound between Kingsley and Ocean? Is the BCH using it as parking for its guests? There were many cars in there and there are no numbered spaces, so it would technically be free parking for those who park there. There are always gates up but the seem to get moved on weekends and when there are events. What exactly is the hold up with 6th Avenue being completely reopened? Is my assumption correct in that the BCH pool is in the way of the street widening (notice where the new sidewalk begins to curve, it cuts right into their pool section) and also that the BCH is using the area for parking? The BCH owns that area.. It's their private parking lot. Not free, it's for the hotels guests. Yes, the pool would come pretty close to the street if indeed the street is ever reopened.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: 1st ave pavilion
That was just a rendering, an early rendering at that... alot had changed on that rendering, including windows and design elements. If you notice, they finished off the top of the sloped roof with flashing to match the rest of the pavilion... as well as the color change at the end of the pavilion. So I believe the squaring off has been eliminated.. . either that, or it was just drawn on the elevations because the bandshell had yet to be designed. Its pretty much unknown as to what exactly theyre going to do with the bandshell, so if they do put railings up there could be a sign of things to come. We'll see... We will see. There are no railings on the 5th ave pavilion yet, just 1st.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Sixth Avenue??
I was under the impression the developers wanted to finnally get that street reopened. I think it would be better for the flow of the street grid if it was. One thing to notice is that last year, the westbound side was used for two way traffic... this year the lines were repainted and it is now open to one way traffic. The plan is to eventually reopen the street, so i dont understand why BCH still needs to use that land. There is a vacant lot across Kingsley which would be of good use for them to park their guests cars. I don't know what the current state of that area is right now. Hopefully things are being talked, so that street can be open again. But I don't know if the BCH would want to give up their parking lot that easily. Parking is hard to come by, and they happen to have a lot attached to their facility.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Boardwalk is magic tonight
As much as we all criticize the redevelopment and the developers, seeing something like this makes us realize that Asbury Park has really rebounded. Its no longer the ghost town it had been. Its a great city that hopefully will only keep growing. And it has nothing to do with condos. The condos that are already built arn't even selling, are they? Does anyone know what teh status of North Beach is?? It doesn't look too lived in yet! Also, i've been trying to figure out what happened to the north side of north beach, facing Ocean ave. Major stucco re plastering for the last month? Any ideas on what happened? I think there's going to be a big problem with the condos. The ones built don't seem to be selling How does anyone figure the massive amount yet to come will sell either? We will just have to wait and see how all that works out. But, weather the condos come or they don't. The magic going on on the boardwalk tonight shows the condos have nothing to do with it. Condos or no condos, the boardwalk will always have stuff going on. So what if there are condos a few blocks away, or upstairs on Ocean ave. As long as everything on the ground floor stays retail/clubs/entertainment then the area will always have stuff going on. We will just have to wait and see what happens next.
Re: [AsburyPark] Asbury Park-ing
Parking will always be a problem. Most beach towns have their share of problems. Once their filled up, their filled up! You can't provide an unlimited amount of parking.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Boardwalk is magic tonight
Where else would you locate one though? mini golf that is. Arn't most, if not all the open space lots already filled up plans? I guess maybe there are a few left north, near north beach area.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Insult to Injury - Bruce's car goes there
Oh boy- Do we really think that a ANOTHER rock and roll museum is needed in Asbury Park? Wouldn't it be cooler to recreate another great time in Asbury Park instead of continuing to live in the past and talk about it over and over again..It seems to be as bad as making the stone pony a theme restaurant.. Wouldnt you rather have a theater that was used for cultural events like burlesque, theater, spoken word, that would bring a more refined taste...maybe, just maybe??? I was too young to even remember the first rock n roll hall of fame. I don't think wanting a new one for the present day is living in the past It seems like it was a neat place. I think some old AP should be worked into the beach front. I like the direction the new beachfront/boardwalk is going in. I can see the vision, although it may be blurry at the moment. HOWEVER, some old school AP is much needed in the waterfront. As Werner has said over and over, AP is fading away. I like the new, but we need to recapture some of the old AP boardwalk ideas. Things people will remember. Things that use to be noted as being an AP thing. I like the oversized fun features of the water park becasue it gives off a certain feeling. A feeling of boardwalk rides and fun. Since we will most likely never see real rides again on the boardwalk, these features of the water park trick the eye. They promote that classic board walk feeling without having to actually have a lot of the rides and amusemnts (something that many don't want anyway).
Re: [AsburyPark] Arthur Pryor Bandshell - Let's ask Gary
Next time I see Gary on the boardwalk, I plan on asking him what the fate of the bandshell is. Perhaps some of my pals here could do the same thing. I'll report back with his answer. It really burns my ass to see what was once a fantastic feature of our boardwalk now serving duty as a roof. That's a good idea. Just ask a simple question and see what he says. Don't come at the question with a bad tone though, or you may not get a truthful answer!
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Insult to Injury - Bruce's car goes there
This is an Asbury Park Group and you live in Ocean Twp., so what's your problem? So, should the museum be in Ocean Twp.? Just asking. What's my problem?! What's yours??? ... I think maybe you are new to the group, since I havn't seen your name posting to often. What difference does it matter where someone lives? Half the people on here are not from Ap, or are only there on weekends. Everyone on this group, for the most part, has the same intentions. To make AP the best it can be, or discuss different things going on in the city. Not sure what point you are trying to make..If the museum represents AP's music scene, both past and present, what good would it do being located in Ocean twp???
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Insult to Injury - Bruce's car goes there
Sharon - Oh boy- Do we really think that a ANOTHER rock and roll museum is needed in Asbury Park? Wouldn't it be cooler to recreate another great time in Asbury Park instead of continuing to live in the past and talk about it over and over again..It seems to be as bad as making the stone pony a theme restaurant.. I don't know who wrote that, but that part did not come from me. Just the part that responded to it. Was that you that said this? I don't even know! I'd be interested to know what OTHER museum exists. I know of none except for the pictures inside the Stone Pony. I just commented that it could be neat to have another museum type place, paired along with another form of entertainment. A lot of stuff has happened in AP over the last 50 plus years. It's places like that that go along with the dream of making AP something again. let people know what was here, and what things are still going on today. Otherwise things could just get swept away, Ap could blur in with every other beach town. Or has it already?
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Insult to Injury - Bruce's car goes there
And would someone please explain to me why that giant triangular coors light advertisement is necessary or even allowed? Are you serious?
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Insult to Injury - Bruce's car goes there
Yeah. Its pretty hideous, in my opinion. Tacky and cheap.. and out of place. It was designed for the side of a stage or canopy, not to be bolted to the building. Its further neglect to a building which should be respected and treated like an imporant part of the city history. Am I the only one who feels this way? Oh okay. The buidling or club was never high end. It has always been tacky and cheap to a certain extant. When was it ever anything else? If it ever became too neat, or too well lit, the days of the Stone Pony would be over. Because it would have then been transformed into something else. I see your point to a certain extent though... The fact that the sign may have been designed for a different use is the only factor that bothers you? Or all signs in general..?
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Insult to Injury - Bruce's car goes there
I just checked out your link. Interesting. That sign use to be on the fence, didn't realize it ended up on the building.
Re: [AsburyPark] Parking meters not enforced til 8/15 ?
Noticed a sign last night corner of Asbury Ave and Kingsley - to the effect parking meters enforced beginning 8/15 And those cartoon drawings are coming to life. Looks like some of the figures for the waterpark arrived. All the meters are effective 8-15? I was at a show at the Stone Pony this past Sat, and noticed a lot of beach people using them. Some machines had the words free parking flashing on across the screen, others didn't! I'll have to check out the water park items tomorrow. I'm very interested to see them in real life. Charlie
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: The lights at the new Stone Pony parking lot
Another thought about the Stone Pony... How come the sidewalk on the northern side of the building wasn't done the right way H... I think we all know what's coming, or rather going.
Re: [AsburyPark] On the BW...
yesterday noticed they now put a coming soon sign in front of the waterpark boardwalk side. Just the concept pic they had in the window. in front of the spot between 1st and sec is a sign announcing a sculpture contest with a 1,000 first prize. What kind of sculpture contest? Did did it give more info or?
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: On the BW...
I'll check it out later, or if anyone else on here has the info, share it! Perhaps i'd enter, although I don't know how the type of media would work? Lot's of questions!
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: On the BW...
Thanks Pawprint! I'm emailing now for more info.
Re: [AsburyPark] They're going to do WHAT???? in the Carousel in Asbury Park, NJ?
I don't know what this is? Is that area big enough??
Re: [AsburyPark] Appearance of Pavillions this summer versus last summer
From pictures years ago, the first ave pavilion looked plane. It may have been an old building that's been around a few decades but I don't really see anything that architectural intriguing about the building. Weather you like the current remodel or not, something needed to be done with it. Again, the back was closed off to ocean ave. Closed in feeling.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
To me the modern metal railings do not fit the architecture of the original building. I don't know if the stairs were ever originally there, but, I wouldn't think. If they do decide to alter a historic structure, would it be too much to ask that the original iron work be replicated?? We are still talking about the 1st ave pavilion right? No, the stairs on the northern side were never there. It does seem like a good idea to have them though. Historic structure? I don't know if there's anything historic about the building, other then the fact that it's a few decades old. There were no architectural details on the building, other then it having real brick. The stairs in my opinion go well with the new design. I think they will tie in better once the upstairs railings are installed. Right now their kind of out in space!
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
Sorry - I was thinking the thread was about the Convention Hall stairs to the beach... Haha, oh all right. I at first didn't know how I felt about the stairs. The stairs leading up to CH. I know their not part of the original design of the building, but I think i like them. They are very functional. Sometimes I think even historic buildings needs to be tweaked to a certain degree to make them more modern day friendly. HOWEVER, I think the railings they chose could have been better. It wasn't a surprise to me because MM said at a previous city meeting that the bottom half would match the boardwalk railings, and the upper half would mimic the CH railings. One day when the boardwalk railings are replaced, I do have hope that they will be. Maybe then they will match them to the Ch railings.
Re: [AsburyPark] convention hall work seems to be stalled?
that scaffolding had been on the northeast corner of the paramount theatre for months now... does anyone know if theyre still working on the building? also im not sure about other people's opinions of this, but im not a huge fan of the stage thats currently set up on the beach in front of convention hall nor the lighting theyve attached to the building. the arthur pryor bandshell could be accomplishing the purpose of that stage. They probably stopped work in order to take care of other projects that were already due to be done... I'm sure they will go back to it soon. The CH wasn't worded to be done this summer anyway, was it? It would be cool to have the bandshell open, but I don't know if that was really planned to happen this summer again, was it? I remember MM had said the 2nd story would be worked on sometime in the future? And that the ground floor was their main issue right now? Pretty sure that's what I remeber, maybe someone else can give better information. The lights on CH? Do you mean the spot lights that light up each brick post on the balcony? I like those lights, but wish they would have done a better job with it. I like the stage, it was cool the night of the fireworks. The blue lights near the entrance to the Beach Bar are also neat.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: convention hall work seems to be stalled?
should have clarified... i dont mind the stage being on the beach, but i just dont like the location. it blocks the view of convention hall, which is a beautiful building... if there needs to be a stage on the 5th avenue beach, well theres one right there atop the 5th ave pavilion I like the stage. I don't care if it blocks the CH. That's being too picky in my mind. But either way, the blockage doesn't bother me..
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: This is what a tourist would want ....
Since we're on the topic of bathrooms and what not. Doesn't the boardwalk now have one planned at the 2nd ave beach club complex? I thought towards the end of the meetings, MM decides to go with the idea on having a public bathroom there. One at the beach club, one in the future casino. One now open on the southern end of CH. That's three? One at the south end of the boardwalk, one in the middle kind of at 2nd? And one north at CH? I guess the one at the beach club really isn't in the middle though... You're talking about real locker rooms and changing rooms? Aside from bathrooms? I don't see that happening any time soon to be honest. Even towns like belmar with have a big summer attraction don't have them! Yet everything is fine there.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: This is what a tourist would want ....
It's a good idea to have bathrooms in the Casino, and i suspect that will happen. Just like their are public bathrooms on the souther side of CH open to the public now. Right before the beach bar. I wonder if visitors wondering around even know their there yet? They should have a sign somewhere inside CH pointing to them. There might be profit in the ideas you speak of, but i'm pretty sure their would be more in other rental complexes. Those types of locker rooms also promote a different atmosphere for the board walk. An atmosphere i'm not so sure MM wants. ? Unless the pass picks up on the boardwalk, i don't think it will ever been that busy. Even on the hottest summer nights. There still seems to be nothing to do People who like to walk near the beach will walk, but people who came to walk the boardwalk for a good summer night may leave shortly once they find out theres nothing there...
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: This is what a tourist would want ....
Which is the missing piece of the puzzle that is so needed. Reportedly that was to be provided in the 2nd ave beach club which is now on hold. I think the city has to force these facilities to be in place for next season. You can see the increase in daily beach badges by families. Lockers, showers and changing rooms that you charge for would add a new bunch of visitors. I like the idea, so don't let me my comments mix you up! But, those types of locker/changing rooms are usually in areas where there are many things to do? Most regular beach towns don't have them, because their not needed. Back in the day when AP had massive amounts of things to do in the area, they came in handy. People went to the beach, finished, got changed and went off to do something else. I don't know if that mentality still exists with the current state of the beach front. Let's see what other things get built.

The new bunch of visitors you speak of are probably the ones that come all day, then do something else while their there. That's the point I was trying to make. I don't know if AP will ever have anything else to offer them at the moment! Hopefully. But yes, I'd like to see some sort of locker area, shower complex included somewhere. The beach club is currently being worked on. I think it is at least. I know it was haulted earlier in the summer, but since the containers have arrived. Some of those containers parked near the 2nd ave beach club area are indeed for the beach club. The one there now is the bathroom! What features being constructed on the lot south of the 3rd ave pavilion? Right next to the blue wall building facing south. I am currently getting my avenues mixed up! That is the water park, right? I'm assuming it is, since it's the closest lot nearest to the Entertainment zone
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: This is what a tourist would want ....
Those restrooms are toilets - not changing rooms/lockers etc. Be nice to come to the beach for the day, wash off and get dressed to maybe go out to dinner ... say at McCloones, Stella or The Deck or head downtown The basement (there is one) of the 4th ave pav and Susnet Pav (up) both had facilities (in my day). There was beach access. The ramp off the beach to sunset and the tunnel to 4th...the pool at 7th. It can be done. Just no one forcing the issue. For all we know without knowing, it could be in the works. Oh yeah, I know. Of course it can be done. The city could very well ask for it. One would think. Over the past few months, and years for that matter, both MM and AP have made mistakes. Mistakes that the city let them slip away with. The city should call out the next mistake and demand something like this. It doesn't have to be the whole pavilion just a small section. I know back in you're day maybe the whole pavilion was used for that purpose. If you saw the basement is set up for this, or once was, that seems like a good place. Just make sure it's well it, open it up as much as can be, and made safe. Or appear safe or else no one will want to go in it. AP is still an unsafe place to some, with good reason to a certain extent. Some people think public locker rooms are unsafe They have a bad rep, more so in AP i think.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: This is what a tourist would want ....
There are two typos in there, let it be known! for the spelling police! :-)
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: This is what a tourist would want ....
Hi pawprint, Yes, I'm well aware about the whole talking to people part of life! :-) That wasn't the point I was making, or trying to anyway. There are plenty of places to go in AP. I was mainly talking about the boardwalk, and the direction it may possibly go in. If, like others have pointed out, it turns into a shopping mall of sorts, then that would be bad. Style Rocket is fine, but if we see 10 more popping up, we may have a problem! Those kinds of places don't generate the type of foot traffic that should be on the boardwalk! There may be plenty of places to stop into and look around, but it will not have the same atmosphere that it could. I think what you mentioned about the family and their kids is normal, I mean, that's done everywhere if you look around People with small kids tend to do that. But I see you're point that it would be nice to make AP different, where it would be the one place you didn't have to do that.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
I keep hearing rumors that the Empress is very upset with MM's build up of the first ave. pavillion, which effectively ruined most of the view from their premium ocean view rooms. Can anybody confirm this? I heard the owners of the Empress were in talks with MM about what they can do to fix the problem with the roof top A/C units. The first ave pavilion isn't any taller then it was before, is it?? I don't see how anything would block views that weren't maybe already blocked?
Re: [AsburyPark] 1st Ave. Pavilion Stairs
Has anybody noticed the new stairs that are on the north side of the 1st Ave. pavilion? 1) Aren't they in a green space? 2) Aren't they on what's supposed to be a sidewalk leading to the boardwalk? Yes, i saw them a few days ago. Jack! You're behind on your news! There were a bunch of threads about the stairs being on the sidewalk a long time ago. :-)
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
I'll have to check it out. If you're on the boardwalk side, the right side is still open the way it always was? With new railings going up, that look pretty cool. Stainless steel. Some sort of lighted post it looks like. The left side was always a 2nd story. I'll take a look
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: 1st Ave. Pavilion Stairs
I don't think the containers are done! They are all white. They look nothing like the renderings proposed. Of course, we all how pointless some renderings can be... But the white container is a pretty far stretch from any form of the rendering. I think more work is to be done on them. I'd like to see some signs on them that light up. I know the boardwalk is trying to head into a different direction, but would it kill them to add some blinking lights somewhere! :-)
Re: [AsburyPark] Traffic Circulation and parking ...again
This past Saturday should leave no doubts regarding the validity of my criticisms of the traffic circulation and parking design in the beachfront. It was total grid lock. I wasn't there, but I have a very good idea of what you're talking about. I'll agree, because i've seen what you're talking about. HOWEVER, i've seen it the same way years ago under the old design. The beach front does reach a point where it can't hold anymore cars. I did like the old multi lane one way on ocean ave though I think. Not sure.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
The Empress remodeling was started before the redevelopment deal. The stucco on the West side came first. Then the redevelopment plan required approvals for the East side. The TRC and Planning board wanted it restored to a look more in keeping with its original design. Those terms were not complied with. Now the building is another classic 60s icon badly remodeled with a stucco overcoat. I agree with that 100 percent Werner. The building looks badly remodeled, and lost the neat design it once had. Now that it's been a few years since Paradise and the Empress have been open I hope they racked in enough money to maybe start having thoughts about doing a real remodel Get rid of the stucco railings on the west side. I know it's not original, but maybe some modern glass railings would be cool. I wouldn't want to restore what was their previously, for it were old fashioned metal railings that did nothing for the building. Not sure if they were original either.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
here are a few more. http://homepage.mac.com/peterlucia/noweverthen/asbury/ap1.1fold/empres1.jpg
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
an example of what it WAS on the front. This is what was stuccoed over on the rear from what I recall. It's open. It's clean. They pay taxes. All true. Of course.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
Color has everything to do with how things are perceived and marketed. A black building gives a different feeling than a white building. You mis-understood what I ment by quality, i was refering to architectural quality, although the building materials are questionable also. No cheap building materials appear to have been used. Isnt it obvious?, one end is orange, the middle is cream snd the other end is yellow. I wasnt comparing it to the convention center, its a building unto itself whose parts are mismatched. Cartoon architecture. My understanding is that it had nothing to do with HoJo (the design), but you are getting to the point, the whole building matched originally, orange brick, details, etc. I don't have your original quote in front of me, but I thought you commented how the 5th ave pavilion looked out of place next to the CH??? The point I was making is, weather it be the newly remodeled 5th ave or the old one, both didn't match or go with the Ch to it's north. Different stylings totally, nothing in comparison expect the orange color of the bricks and the few HOjo details. Not a classy building? WoW you must not get out often {a joke}. Ive been to a lot of places and never seen anything like that. It is soo cool and unique, but now looks nothing like when it was designed and built. Have you ever been to Wildwood, NJ? They really take care of their 50s and 60s, buildings. Here they all got ruined, the Empress is another example, I'm wondering why. I don't consider the 5th ave pavilion to be classy in the same way that I would consider the CH is what I ment... A building that is cool I don't th ink i'd classify as being classy. I think the 5th is a very good building though. The Empress was remodeled a few years ago by the current owners. Nothing to do ith the development plan of AP. They did a lot of work, but i'll agree that I think it lost some of it's style during the renovation. I don't remember the details, but I think they had a timeline to get the work done by, or else their ownership would be questioned. Maybe someone else remembers more details on what happened there. Welcome to the group! Charlie
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
I never implied that the pavilion and the center were matched or should be matched. But your question is 'how did it fit before it was remodeled'. Well its unique to Asbury. Architecture goes through phases and certain buildings from the 50s/60s are recognized as worth saving. Its a record of the life of the town and in a larger picture a record of civilization. I agree with that. Nothing is the same, and if it was, it would appear fake. You think everything should be plowed down or remodeled just because it can be ? No, not at all. I liked a lot of the old pavilions before they were worked on. However, parts of their design I didn't like. Some of them could have been edited to open them up more while keeping their already existing design. Making the pavilions more open to ocean ave was a good idea in my opinion. Before, all the pavilions had back doors facing ocean ave. Picture driving behind a strip mall, seeing all the back singel doors to each business. That is what ocean ave was like before. It's nice the way it is now. I just want to see some good stuff come into them!!
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
Someone asked for an example when i mentioned the mismatched buildings, just look at the one next to the convention center. Imagine taking the US capital, or any classy building, and painting it 3 differnt colors. Orange on the left, cream in the middle and yellow on the right doesnt say quality to me. Colors have nothing to do with quality! Not sure why you're bringing that up into the case you're trying to make! :-) The stucco used could have been done the cheap with, foam board covered in a skim coat. That is how most stucco jobs are done today. However, the boardwalk buildings were done the right way with multi steps and real metal mesh. You speak about the 5th ave pavilion, the one next to CH (Convention Hall). How is it out of place of mismatched? How does the current building, before it was remodeled fit in with the CH? Classical stylings next to space age modern? The only thing matching were the orange bricks and orange details of the HOJO. The 5th ave pavilion is not the state capital or a classy building. If you were to paint 2 walls of the CH different colors, that would be maddness. However, the building you speak of was always corky (again, before the remodel). Back when it was first built it was space age modern, jetsons, i'm pretty sure it was ahead of it's time back then. Imagine what people might have said about it when it went up? Something that crazy being sat next to CH?? I'm sure there must have been quite the uproar. I don't think the things being done so far are cheap, but confused may be a better way to define it. Things are not done, nothing is completed, yet things are trying to open. They are way behind on the dates they gave, it's a fact! But instead of complaining about it (not you), I say let them work and try to get things done. Of course I think the city should come up with some sort of an agreement with MM to get some things for the boardwalk that the city wants also. Maybe more boardwalk type food, or other traditional boardwalk features.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
You make some good points about the 5th AVE pavilion and it probably did seem a little crazy in 1961 (although the Rufus Nims roof design and orange and white color scheme had become ubiquitous across America by then), but it managed to grow on visitors and become an indelible part of the boardwalk experience. This probably says more about the vision of John Fridy than anything else. BTW, sorry for any typos in my last post, it was rushed. Thanks. i liked the old 5th ave pavilion the way it was, but I also like the new design. But, also keep in mind the building is NOT done. Even when it is done, it's still not! The 2nd story is not being worked on for some time. I remember at a city meeting, MM even said when the 2nd story is worked on in the future, small elements of what has already been done may be modified to attach into whatever new stuff is created up top. It's fine if you don't like the style of the building, but trying to pass it of as a mismatched building next to CH is insane. The present of past 5th ave pavilion never matched. It just felt right because everyone knew it. It grew on you one might say. And i'm sure it took time for it to grow all those years ago. On a different topic all together, the inside arcade at CH is really shaping up. It's too bad we can't have those kinds of crowds on the boardwalk!!! I don't know if we will ever see that.. Unless more sociable places open on the boardwalk. People will only walk back and forth on the boardwalk so many times... The more there is to do, the more they will wonder around.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
They are not modern, they are cheap. Thats the new trend in todays architecture sometimes refered to as placeless design or cartoon architecture. In my opinion, they are modern. But, to each their own! You have the right to think what you want, just like I do! :-) Basics like massing, details and color are mismatched or out of scale. Certainly you have seen the trend in suburban malls and housing developments. I don't think the colors are mismatched at all. That's one of the main features that give it it's modern flare in my opinion. You mention brick buildings, brick has texture, creates shadow lines, has variations in color - a much better look thats traditional and interesting. That's usually true with bricks, although not with the bricks that were used previously! They were solid yellow bricks. A type of brick that were frequently used in the 60's and also before. They were real bricks, in good shape, but they gave a dated look in my opinion. They reminded me of an old fashioned 1970's building. The kind that stands out with an obvious dated look! Just my thoughts.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
Of course things should have been done a long time ago. But
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
Is still to build 3000+ high end Condos and a retail/commercial beachfront for the use of the condo dwellers. Werner, does the plan really mention that the retail/commercial area is designated for the soul purpose of the condo dwellers? I somehow doubt it does, but if i'm mistaken, sorry in advance... It sounds like you're intentionally inserting words to help with you're conclusion. So far what's been built on the boardwalk, and inside the CH arcade is for anyone who wants to enjoy it. Maybe it's not the sort of thing you wanted to see open? Is that why it then becomes marked for condo dwellers only???
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
Werner, I didn't cut and paste everything you said just now, but yes, it does make sence what you say. Sometimes it just seems like you word things in such a way, that it leads people towards your way of thinkng. Everything you said is true, however, the parking for beach goers lines ocean ave as well as all the avenues. How has that changed any? The condo units all have enclosed parking. Of course any visitors that the condos receive would be parking on the street. Hypothetically, any business where the condos now are would also receive visitors. Those extra cars were always present? Was there EVER parkin for the C or CH? Back in the day when everything was up and running, it seems like there was always a parking crisis. How many parking spaces did narrowing the roads really cause?
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
Nice comments Jack! I like the containers, I think they look neat! Also, i don't think their completed! Didn't the renderings on line show different images or abstractions on the sides of them? I think the white is just the base coat. They were in a rush to get them open and operational. I expect changes to them soon. We will see! I noticed the other day they switched out the two modern flower pots on each side of the Paramount with more classic styling ones. A small thing to notice, but i noticed! I actually liked the modern ones better, because it blurred the visual cut off between old and new. The new black ones look good too though.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: looks like the boardwalk is getting a new website
I can't see the site either, just a yellow screen.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
Reminds me of all the classic strip malls I see getting the fake victorian make overs. Not to mention the new strip malls. Everything looks the same and fake. What? How do you think they all look the same? All the buildings are the same style, modern. But, I don't know if it's a true statement to say that anything else you see around looks like them? Use some of the previous plain yellow brick buildings as examples. How were they unique? The same style buildings can be found in near by Spring Lake.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Hi - Questions
There is only so much space on the boards themselves to build. They have to maximize every inch of that space. That's why you have the pop- up retail - the converted storage units. What gets developed west of ocean ave could be unique. Time will tell - might be 1, 5 or 10 years... Oak - Are you implying that the buildings on the boardwalk are not good or well designed? That's how i read it, not sure if that's what you had intended or not. Almost like the boardwalk is the way it is, but we can hope for better on the west side of ocean ave. I think the boardwalk buildings are nice. I mean, it's true, their not that different or stand out features. But were the ones before really that stand out themselves? Yea, one could argue we had the chance, and we should have went all out. Ah, I don't know.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: My Visit and Thank You!
I forgot where I heard it, maybe it was a city meeting. If down the road main street is changed to one lane, AP is in trouble! Do you know how many cars go through both of those lanes each way? Image if they were forced into one. Traffic! Parallel parking? Forget it! Doing that in a one lane road backs up the entire flow of traffic until the car is parked. People are also hesitant on parking because they don't feel like holding up traffic. A mental thing, maybe not even knowing their doing it.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Bicycles, Parking and Pavillions
Bikes are all right early in the morning, when no one is there. But during the day? The board walk is meant for walkers first, bikes second. That's how it is anywhere. It's not called a board WALK for nothing!
Re: [AsburyPark] amazing crowd for the fireworks
Asbury Park had another great year of fireworks with a crowd bigger than any I have seen since the early 80s. Scenes like last night make me seriously wonder why some people doubt Asbury Park could be a tourist attraction again. I'm sure many city residents were watching the fireworks display, but tons of people from outside Asbury came to watch as well. If this city wanted to - and put their resources and energy behind tourism - Asbury Park's tourism would thrive again... Of course it could be, and people will always flock in masses to events like this. But the fact remains that there arn't really any huge attraction type things planned. The entertainment zone hasn't been built yet however, so the door is open. Can you really picture widliness like what existed last night in the mix with million dollar condos everywhere? They don't mix?
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Bicycles, Parking and Pavillions
Jack - When I was on the boardwalk last night, I took notice of the AC unite on the 5th ave pavilion. Assuming we are talking about the same one, it is by no means in any location where there were seats present before! The unit sits on top of the large block on the roof, just west of the stage. The box is already 10 feet above the stage, which means the box is even higher. There were seats ABOVE the stage like that? It doesn't seem like there were? I'm looking at pictures online right now, and don't see the seats you were talking about? Maybe we're talking about two different things! I'll double check to make sure i'm not talking before I know for sure.
Re: [AsburyPark] amazing crowd for the fireworks
I take back part of what I just said a minute ago. People in the know keep referring to the new AP as something similar to South Beach, FL. Meaning, the same idea, not the same place. Family in the daytime, and a complete different adult friendly lifestyle at night. I guess the high end could mix after all.
Re: [AsburyPark] On the BW
The minniture golf looks super nice. I like the waterfall action going on. The rocks. Nice! 5 dollars per person isn't bad either. I drove by on my lunch today, and saw a bunch of people playing.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: What has become of the Arthur Pryor amphitheater?
Charlie, Then how do you account for ac/heating equipment being placed where there used to be seats? Do you think that it's a good idea to have an A/C unit roaring behind you while you are watching let's say a nice little brass band concert, or anything without amplification. Once again, I hope i'm I'mng, but it appears that certain things just aren't adding up. And, when there was just a ramp it was fine for every type of person. Do you honestly think that an elevator is the way to handle maybe 200 people up there? If the AC unit is where I think it is, then i'm pretty sure there weren't seats there! I'm picturing it being on the eastern side of the stage. That corner area. I don't recall seats being there before. I could be wrong. But I know most of the seats were facing the stage on the northern Ramp side. You may be right though, i'll have to go take a look. The ramp was fine for every type of person? How do you figure? Do you think someone with a walking dissability would want to walk up there? How about a wheel chair?? So because they may not be able to get up the steep ramp, that means they can't see the show? I think Werner even pointed out a while back that the ramps slope was not accurate for today's standards. But since it's already there it could stay. Another form of transportaion was needed to get from one level to the next. The ramp alone wasn't up to code as the only means. Again, i'm not 100 percent sure Werner stated that fact, but I know I had heard it from someone on here! If you're out there lucking Werner, let us know the specs about the ramp! It would be nice to have the elevator and the ramp in use. Of course 200 people couldn't use the elevator. I hadn't even taken a close look, is the current ramp disconnected from the band shell area?
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: What has become of the Arthur Pryor amphitheater?
Good to hear an ice place will be taking home in one of the containers. That's the type of place I was hoping would find their way into those containers.
Re: [AsburyPark] Responding to Oak: North Beach Flags - Precedent
Interesting. No, I don't think it would be wise to have every business in AP posting flags all over the place. I think to a CERTAIN extent it's all right in the waterfront zone. It's a near area, obviously it's twice as hard for anyone to open anything down there. It's dead. It's a huge venture, bigger then venturing in other parts of the city. If it helps them sell units, that's a positive for the city. Not a negative. Of course we don't want signs everywhere, but I don't see the harm in those that are there. For now. I wouldn't want to see them there a few years from now though!
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: What has become of the Arthur Pryor amphitheater?
At very least, I can definitely say there were seats there. I attended quite a few events there when it was in use, I did sound there on a few occasions and at least once, my band played up there. I do agree that an elevator would be a good move, but I tend to think the majority of people would be happy to walk up the ramp. It's part of the experience. Of course it's part of the experience, it's neat to walk up there. But not everyone can do that. You can't leave people out. All buildings today are built for access to everyone. The elevator is much needed. Not only for those that need it, it's good to have. Does the ramp currently still connect to the upstairs band shell area? Or does it stop at the super club? Now that i'm thinking about it, i'm not sure. I'll check it out.
Re: [AsburyPark] RIP Madam Marie
ASBURY PARK — Madam Marie Costello, who had told fortunes since the 1930s and became famous in rock music history for her presence and predictions on the Asbury Park boardwalk, died Friday, her great-granddaughter, Sally Costello said today.Family members were attending morning services today, Costello said. The psychic reader and advisor was in her mid-90s, and became known worldwide from Bruce Springsteen's homage to her in his music, specifically the song, 4th of July, Asbury Park (Sandy). ''She really wasn't sick. She just wasn't feeling well,'' Costello said. She was very, very strong until the day she died.'' Sally Costello is one of the family members who still does readings at the Madam Marie booth not far from Convention Hall on the boardwalk. Marie Costello, herself, closed down her regular operations on the boardwalk in the mid-1990s after a dropoff in business. She continued telling fortunes in Ocean Township.
Re: [AsburyPark] Re: RIP Madam Marie
I just quoted the press article.. But since you brought it up, no, I don't think they will ever tear it down. They put up their new containers right around the MM building. If they had planned on removing it, they would have done so already. The ideal spot for the container would have been in the corner (where MM is). No ones moving anything at this point! But of course, weather MM herself will remain there forever is questionable. I know her family has been running the place for the last few years now, will they continue?
