Re: WallStreet upgrade: enquiries and ruminations
100/133 mhz shouldn't really make that much of a difference due to backwards compatibility, insofar as I understand it. There's industry standard backward compatibility and then there's Mac standard backward compatibility. Wallstreets will not accept many high density PC100 and PC133 sticks. A PC100/PC133 stick may indeed be 256 MB (and low profile, too), but a Wallstreet may read this as only 128 MB, even though the on-stick EEPROM says it is 256 MB. Wallstreets and similar machines (Beige G3, for example) have problems with high density chips, and more particularly high density chips on one or both sides of the stick. Even low density chips on both sides of the stick can be a problem. Later machines, say, BW and Lombard/Pismos do not have these same issues. This seems to be a characteristic of the DRAM controller chip used on the two affected series of machines, Beige DT/MT/AIO and 1998 PB. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... My Reply follows quote. On 04/02/2006 13:31 [EMAIL PROTECTED] said: Greetings, I have a Wallstreet that I am trying to connect to my cable modem. I know the modem works, because I can connect with my BW. I take the ethernet cable from the back of the BW and connect it to the ethernet port on the Wallstreet and then start it up. I try to connect using IE, but it doesn't connect. I am running 10.2 on the wallstreet. I have the configuration set to DHCP server and the IP address has changed from 000.000 to one similiar to my BW. Any ideas? Thanks, Lee The easiest way would be to put a router between the cable modem and the other computers. To do what you are trying, I expect that you will have to unplug the modem, connect the Wallstreet, and then power up the modem and then the Wallstreet. Check the settings in the TCP/IP control panel (or whatever it is called in OS 10.2.8 - can't recall at the moment). Generally, the modem gets the MAC address of the first device it sees and expects that to be the only device attached. A router fools the modem and passes out addresses as needed. Re: wallstreet connection
Stardate 060204.13:31 -0800. A subspace message from l s reads: I have a Wallstreet that I am trying to connect to my cable modem. I know the modem works, because I can connect with my BW. This could well be an issue with your modem, and not the laptop. You see, cable ISPs used to be quite narky about the number of machines that could be connected, so cable modems were made to 'spoof' the MAC address (the physical identifier of your computer's ethernet interface chip - MAC stands for Media Access Controller) of the first *real* ethernet device plugged into it. My guess is this is what the modem has done, and to reset this 'spoofed' MAC address, you need to do a full factory reset of the modem. The process for this will differ from modem to modem, so you should contact your ISP and tell them you're changing machines and you need to know how to do this factory-defaults trick. Once you *have* reset the modem, do *NOT* plug a computer into it - in fact, don't even turn it on yet. Instead, nip out to any PC shop and buy a small ethernet switch (not a plain 'hub', you need a device with its own valid MAC address). Plug this into the cable modem, and your Macs into the switch. It is important that you power everything up in *just* the right order, or you will have to start this all over again with another factory-reset of the modem. This is the order: - the switch - your main computer (the BW) - the cable-modem - your laptop, and any other computers you may have hooked in. ... and even then, there is no guarantee this will work, depending on both the ISP and the cable-modem. What I suggest you do instead, is buy a second ethernet interface for your snurftower (hey, it's blue and white, and cute - byte me ;)), leave it hooked up to the cable modem as you have done normally, and hook the laptop to the new ethernet socket. Then, go to your System Preferences, open Networks, and then to your onboard ethernet interface. Select Share this connection. This will now activate OS X's built-in internet connection sharing and DHCP system - any computer(s) plugged into your *new* ethernet port on the BW *should* be able to see and use the internet that's coming in from your cable modem. Re: WallStreet DVD-ROM issue, perchance?
Also - if my display can't keep vertical and needs something heavy to lean against, does it mean my hinges are pushing up the daisies? Well, it means the hinges are broken. Nothing one can do about that except replacing the hinges. I bought a used Wallstreet off ebay for the price two new hinges would have cost me and had the complete screen replaced. As I had a 14 screen and the bought Wallstreet only had a 13 screen I now oughta have the only Wallstreet which lets you select screen resolutions in the Monitor control panel... - so the technician told me. Another thing: I've read a couple of scare stories about how hard drives with more capacity than 30-40 gig may not be too friendly with the WallStreet . . . should I look no further than the 40-gig Travelstar that I mentioned in a previous post? Re: WallStreet DVD-ROM issue, perchance?
I was able to get a Pismo on eBay for $200+s/h. I did spend money to add memory and move to a 500 MHz processor. I think that I got 'lucky' because the comp's description included a pink-light-on-start- up-but -goes-away-after-a-seconds issue. The latter hasn't bothered me in the least. I've priced out the replacement. I think I'll be with this one for a while. I was happy with the WS for basic internet surfing and note-taking. When I decided I wanted to use Keynote for several school presentation, the WS became obsolete. I had a similar problem when my Sonnet G4/500 CPU was installed under OS 9.1 (upgraded from 8.1 at the same time). The problem was that the heat shield wasn't properly installed and thus the heat during bootup became too great and the machine froze. Sometimes the menu bar comes into view, sometimes not, but the weird thing that whatever is in view -- clock, battery indicator, menu bar -- the items open on click, but don't do anything. Same with the Dock. If I mouse over the Dock, it appears, but the icons don't work. If I start in OS 9.2.1, it works OK, but freezes intermittently, which is also weird because that never happens when it's running in Classic (but that's actually different, isn't that true?). -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Wallstreet questions
ever made for this machine? Second, can the lower RAM chip be replace, if so how is this done? Hi, yes, the lower RAM card can be replaced. You have to remove the processor board. Before you begin, remove the following: € AC adapter € Expansion bay modules € Keyboard € Heat sink € Hard drive 1 Position a nylon tool under the center of the right side of the board and lift up to release it. 2 Pull the microprocessor board to the right. Replacement Note: Align the tabs on the left side of the board with the slots on the top case stiffener, then press down firmly on the right side of the board to seat the connector. Replacement Caution: The microprocessor board can be partially inserted and the computer will still function. However, over time, heat will cause the microprocessor board to lose contact and can cause the system to have intermittent problems such as no booting. Therefore, check proper installation by pressing on the microprocessor board connector a second time to make sure the board is fully seated. Re: wallstreet questions
Shawn, I have worked on a couple of WS, both I and II. I would suggest avoiding OS X.2 altogether. I had sleep and monitor issues on both machines that were not resolved until I upgraded to Panther installed using XPostFacto 3. IIRC, there were others on the list had similar issues. If you want OS X, go to Panther rather than Jaguar. Re: wallstreet questions
I would second this advice. Those old 233MHz processors don't cut it. Get the second generation processors. I was informed by one on this list that second generation processors would work on the first generation machines, not vice versa. Re: Wallstreet 13.3 screen
Not that I know of, but you could try googling it. I only remember back from when that model was new, as well as it saying in my Apple Service Source manuals. - something like Screen flickers intermittently or displays a series of lines: If the display is a 13.3 model and squeezing the left bezel causes it to stop, and if the model number is between something and something then the part should be replaced with some part number as a warranty repair. Re: wallstreet questions
First, I have no idea on whether a CD-RW was made for the Wallstreet. I know the later Lombard and Pismo have aftermarket Superdrives available, but I don't know about the WS or WSII. Second, if I remember correctly, the Lombard and Wallstreet take the same RAM, with the lower slot being replaceable by pulling the daughtercard out and installing a low-profile chip. Someone who knows more about the Wallstreet can feel free to correct this, but I think it's replaceable. I know it is on a Lombard, though. Re: wallstreet questions
IMHO, I'd upgrade the processor in any Wallstreet before going after RAM, as long as you have 128 MB or more. CD-R and RW drives are, no offence, extraneous gadgets that are a little farther down the list. However, that's only my opinion, but I'm used to a Lombard 400 with 192 MB of RAM and I'm looking to swap my 128 MB card for a 256 after I get a new battery in it. Re: Wallstreet hinge replacement by PBParts
I went for the $69 hinge replacement service (plus $27 shipping) from PB Parts in Scottsdale, Ariz. My Wallstreet G3 returned today, and it's like a new, usable 'puter. The screen won't flop forward or back anymore, which means it's a traveling companion again. Plus, the PBParts people fixed some tiny things for free! I doubted whether I should invest another 90-odd dollars in a 10-year-old G3 Powerbook, but now I am quite glad that I did. My highest recommendation for PBParts to other users plagued by the stupid Wallstreet hinge problem. A note of caution is merited here: I used PBParts to have my hinges replaced, too. Less than a year later, the repair failed. I had to pay for shipping to them, but they admitted it was something we haven't seen before and send it back quickly overnight at their expense. Further, another year later and the hinges are a little wobbly now: I can't keep the lid at less than a 90-degree angle or it'll slam shut (I'd prefer to keep it just a bit open, as I have a 17 monitor behind it which I use instead of the WS's screen). PBParts thinks it's the screen support (not the hinges itself), but has agreed to consider it a repair warranty issue if it needs further work. So far, it's stayed this way for 5 months with no worsening. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... If that hinge breaks (and they do) and a sharp portion of the metal pierces a video cable running through the hinge or some other cable coming off the mother board it's gong to take out another component... it could short and take out many more components and that, I promise you, will be very costly. I had the hinges on my wallstreet replaced by pbparts for about $70 and they've been fine since then (3 years). That doesn't sound like a bad deal. I really want to think i was able to find the hinges on ebay for around $50 and do the repair myself. Re: Wallstreet hinge repair
Greetings. I finally managed to score a good deal on a 233/cache, 14.1 Wallstreet off E-bay. It arrived a couple of days ago in better condition than the E-bay seller advertised. Just goes to show that not everyone is a crook I suppose. Anyway, I have some questions. The display hinges seem kind of 'loose' in that the display has about an inch of free play when open. Is this a sign of the hinges getting ready to fail? If so, where is the best place to get them replaced/repaired? 1 travel seems a bit much but it might work that way for a while yet. Or it might not. My father in law's wallstreet has one broken hinge and it's quite inconvenient. I had the hinges on my wallstreet replaced by pbparts for about $70 and they've been fine since then (3 years). Check here for details: http://www.pbparts.com/shop? keywords=hinge+repairsearch_request_button=+Search+ You can also buy new OEM hinges and replace them yourself but I think it might actually cost more than having PBparts install aftermarket hinges. Re: Wallstreet max HO size?
I've never seen an issue with any drive in any of these machines - what problems have you seen ? Specifically, failure of the drives to properly negotiate down to the lower AT specification expected, and required by the Lombard and the Pismo. Again, which means what ? It runs slow ? It doesn't work ? I've changed tens of drives and not seen any problems - is there a symptom of this problem, does it affect just one or two makes of drives ? Re: Wallstreet max HO size?
Specifically, failure of the drives to properly negotiate down to the lower AT specification expected, and required by the Lombard and the Pismo. Again, which means what ? It runs slow ? It doesn't work ? The machine will lock up, and fail to get past the flashing icon. Initializing the drive in another machine (BW, for example) and then putting that drive in an affected PowerBook won't work as the affected PowerBook will not auto-negotiate and, therefore, cannot read the boot code off of the drive and into the FLASH ROM on the motherboard. This affects certain new world PowerBooks (Lombard, Pismo, and possibly others), which read the boot code off of the drive and into a FLASH ROM before proceeding to do the actual Mac OS boot. The last old world PowerBook (Wallstreet) appears to be OK. I presume the first G3 (Kanga) is OK, too. Strangely, the first new world desktop (BW) is OK, but the first few new world PowerBooks (Lombard and Pismo) are not OK. I've changed tens of drives and not seen any problems - is there a symptom of this problem, does it affect just one or two makes of drives ? Both makes of drives and model within make. OW has documented those which they sell which won't work with Lombard and Pismo machines. I've documented those which are not sold by OW, but which I have specifically tested for compatibility with Lombard and Pismo machines. In general, stay away from all Samsungs, and also from the latest Hitachi/IBM and Toshiba drives for these machines. If the drives are 10 GB or smaller, they're usually old enough so that this problem won't appear. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Wallstreet max HO size?
I've documented those which are not sold by OW, but which I have specifically tested for compatibility with Lombard and Pismo machines. I wasn't able to find anything on OWC, can you provide links to these lists for us all to benefit ? Here's the exact text contained in the OWC warning ... OWC Notice to Apple PowerBook G3 Owners: This drive model is not compatible with your computer. It does not have the backwards compatibility required by the ATA/IDE controller of any Powerbook G3 Series laptop. Toshiba models that are compatible include: MK2023GAS 20GB 4200RPM, MK4019GAX 40GB 5400RPM, MK6021GAS 60GB 4200RPM, and MK6022GAX 5400RPM. Further, all currently listed Hitachi/IBM and Fujitsu models are also compatible. This is found on their web page ... http://eshop.macsales.com/Catalog_Item.cfm?ID=6858Item=TOSMK8026GAX Note that OWC does not sell Samsungs, and so far it has not been selling the very latest Hitachi/IBMs, so its warning, above, couldn't (and doesn't) include the warning I have previously stated, based upon my actual testing of the affected PB models, and Hitachi/IBM and Samsung drives. Again, if 10 GB or under, and if older 20 GB, you should be OK. But for newer 20 GB, and for larger than 20 GB, be sure to get a return privilege, or a guarantee that the drive will work with your Lombard or Pismo or other newer PB. For that matter, be sure to get the same, if you have a Wallstreet. In general, I believe the real problem is an incompatibility with early new world PBs and certain newer HDs, not older HDs or old world PBs. OWC has stated the problem from the perspective of the specific drives which it currently sells, not from the general case of all drives which are made, and which might possibly be installed in an affected model PB. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I've now tried another screen pulled from a working unit. It also doesn't work. Since the ribbon cable comes with the screen they both got swapped in the process. As such, I'm inclined to think the trouble is elsewhere...perhaps internal to the powerbook? Alternatively, is there any way to test the screens separate from the powerbooks to be sure they are good? Re: Wallstreet II and USB with More Specs
Barbara, a USB adapter card, e.g. the Macally CardBus: http://www.macally.com/spec/usb/connecting_device/uh2226.html just slip into the PCMCIA slot, and you plug the USB cable into that. You can also find various adapters that provide additional ports. Note that the above card is USB 2.0. I have an older Macally one (part no UH 276) that is USB 1.1 which are also still fairly widely available, from $5.99 for a used one (on Amazon) up My USB 1.1 works great in my 233 MHz Wallstreet for my HP all-in-one scanner-printer-copier. Be sure to confirm which version(s) of USB will be compatible with the scanner before buying the card. I assume it's dead. It's the only battery I have for this wallstreet. It's been stored for several years, was fine before that. Is there any utility that might get the computer to try charging it? I'm just wondering if maybe the charge has dropped so low that the computer doesn't recognise it, but perhaps if given some juice it may still have a little life in it. There used to be a little utility from Apple called, I believe, BatteryReset, which would just reset the little chip on the battery so that the battery would communicate with the Wallstreet that it's OK to charge. Not sure where it is on the Apple download site, though... Battery Reset only works with batteries that still have at least a trace charge in them. If the WS can't see the battery in the bay it's too dead to be revived. Sad but true -- LiIons that are stored for too long without at least a 30-40% charge will die. I've never even heard of any external charger/conditioner that will revive a LiIon once it's reached this state; has anyone else actually saved one of these...? I thought I should respond to this in case others read it while researching a solution to the same problem. I took Paul up on his kind offer and he quickly sent me the battery reset utility. It worked perfectly on the first try, and the battery charged for hours while I used the computer. I'm waiting on new hinges for the wallstreet so I've removed the display to protect the ribbon cables and am using an external monitor instead. After the battery was fully charged, I went on the net with the internal modem and the hard drive running constantly, and it lasted for 2 hours 55 minutes. I realize it won't last nearly as long when the display is back on, but I'm happy nonetheless. :) Thanks to all, Andrew -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I am not worried about the 233 Cachelss, people are selling 250 G3 and 290 G3 upgrades on e-bay very reasonably. any expericne running Mac OS X on this item etc, etc, etc If you guys give it the thumbs down I'm not going to buy it. Thank You Brian I am typing this on a 233MHz/512KB cache model with a 14'' screen. I am pretty sure that the 14'' models did not come on the 233MHz cacheless. I'm not sure because I built mine from a box of parts and I only had the one WSII CPU to use. So I used a WSII mobo, WSII 233 CPU and managed to scrap together a nice little machine. I get 6 hours off the dual batteries, 6 hours use! I get 2 weeks plus on standby as I recently tested. Although it seems nothing in Apple i cheap I found this upgrade reasonable. http://www.wegenermedia.com/wllst400.htm Its a G3 400MHz/1MB cache CPU. Supports 512MB of RAM also. Should be nice for running OS X. I had a Lombard before and I can tell you OS 10.2 ran dog low on that, with 382MB RAM. So I will not even attempt OSX on this little 233 right now. Of course you'll want a bigger HD also but ince the transfer rate is slow I wouldn't recommend paying extra for a 7200, the 4200/5400 would be fine. Also be careful of ATA6 HD's as they appear to not work in these old PB models. Another consideration would be the video memory. Since it is a 14'' it mot likely has 4MB's but there is the possibility it is only 2. The tell-tale sign is if it has S-Video or not. If it has S-Video it is 4MB if not it is only 2. If you are interested I have some WSII mobo's but no CPU's if you would like to find or buy that upgrade and go that route. I got mine extremely cheap and I fairly impressed with the little guy but it is very slow and old. It's worth it to m e to upgrade it since my initial cost was so low, but if I were buying one off eBay I'd save my money and go for an iBook snow or a faster PB, say a G3 400 or better. OS X will run a lot better and the upgrade path seems to be longer. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Also be careful of ATA6 HD's as they appear to not work in these old PB models. WS I and II will both accept at least some ATA-6 HDs. I use Samsung 40 GB drives in mine. These drives will not auto negotiate, but the WSs don't care in this case. It is the Lombard and Pismo which cannot use ATA-6 HDs which will not auto negotiate. For Lombards and Pismos, I use Hitachi/IBM 5K80 60 GB drives, which are ATA-6 but which will also properly auto negotiate. All Samsungs and most newer Hitachi/IBM and Toshiba drives will not auto negotiate. Hitachi/IBM 5K80 drives are getting hard to come by. In the 60 GB capacity, which is right at the sweet spot price/GB-wise, Newegg.com is selling these for about $90 while BestBargainPC.com is selling these for about $83, but BestBargainPC.com may substitute a later Hitachi/IBM model if the 5K80s are temporarily out of stock. OWC's 2.5 disk drive catalog lists the specific drives which it sells which will and will not work with particular PowerBooks. As OWC doesn't sell Samsung (Newegg.com does) OWC doesn't state the fact that Samsung WILL work with WS I and II, but WILL NOT work with Lombard and Pismo. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Wallstreet G3 233 Powerbook
Hi There Mike, I have a 12 233 PDQ Wallstreet. It runs OSX Ok for me. At the moment it is 10.2.8 as to use 10.3 or higher needs xpostfacto. Before I installed 10 I fitted a 5400 rpm seagate 40 Gb HD and ram up 512 Mb. I at first installed 10.1 then upgraded it to 10.1.5 I then found a good price for a Wallstreet 300 Mhz CPU and installed this with out any problems. I then installed 10.2 and its upgrades to 10.2.8 As I mentioned at first its OK for me but I do not use speed eating programmes. If you need to use something like Photoshop you may need to think about changing to another Mac. John Abraham. UK. Re: WallStreet G3 233 PowerBook
I have found a; 14 Powerbook - G3 233 Wallstreet I suspect the model is the CHEAP-O Cacheless model Anything I should watch out for? I am typing this on a 233MHz/512KB cache model with a 14'' screen. I am pretty sure that the 14'' models did not come on the 233MHz cacheless. Actually the first Wallstreets had three different display size choices - 12.1, 13.3 and 14.1; IIRC the 12.1 was stock on the 233 MHz Mainstreet model but the other screen sizes were BTO options. The Series II PDQ models had 14.1 displays standard, with 12.1 available as a cost-saver. So the display size isn't a reliable indicator of which Series WS you have. I'd check the info plate on the bottom of the 'Book. My Series II reads: 14.1TFT/233MHz-512K/32MB/2GB HD/4MB video/CD/Modem; I've heard the Mainstreets don't have this info on the bottom. Although it seems nothing in Apple i cheap I found this upgrade reasonable. http://www.wegenermedia.com/wllst400.htm Its a G3 400MHz/1MB cache CPU. Supports 512MB of RAM also. If you have a cacheless Mainstreet, forget OS X. 10.2 Jaguar is almost tolerable on the 266 PDQ. If you do have a Series I mobo you might try OS X with the 292 MHz CPU; could serve you well enough, at least for now. Another consideration would be the video memory. Since it is a 14'' it most likely has 4MB's but there is the possibility it is only 2. The tell-tale sign is if it has S-Video or not. If it has S-Video it is 4MB if not it is only 2. Right. Re: WallStreet G3 233 PowerBook
I've heard the Mainstreets don't have this info on the bottom. Correct ... none do. G3 Series is about all they say. The displays are interchangeable, but the motherboards and the CPUs are not. 13 screen 292 MHz/83 MHz bus machines (WS Is) were made. With the WS II, the as built configuration was included in the bottom label. The WS I just says the series. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... I quit, stuck the card in, started the installer again, and noticed the items were checked. So you should either install the OS with the card in the slot, or manually check everything with USB in the name. If you rerun the installer, isn't there an option to (something like) add or remove system components? That lets you add the USB files without reinstalling the whole system. I seem to remember that option, but it's been a while, so it may not really exist! Anne -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Wallstreet pcmcia card
I just acquired a used ADS USB 2 port USB pcmcia card ( got it to enable a USB mouse, and smart media card adapter) It came without instructions. I plugged it in to the top slot, and a little empty box showed up on the screen. I tried both an apple usb mouse and a usb card reader, but neither showed up.. Then I pushed the tiny button over it and it ejected. An hour later the Wallstreet crashed for the first time (seperate email concerning) Any help? thanks much!, Del You might have to install the USB software. I cant remember where to find it but I think its USB Extensions 1.4.1 or something like that. Thanks for the reply, I looked up Apple Support, was ready to download when I read this on the 1.4.1 page Important: Mac OS versions 9.1 and later include a later version of this software. Installing USB Adapter Card Support 1.4.1 over Mac OS 9.1, 9.2 or later could result in the USB adapter card not working. Just to clarify: Wallstreet II motherboards had a Rage LT chip on the bottom? That's how I tell the difference? My CPU's are labeled, one is a 233MHz, no cache, found some pics on the web, and the other is a 292MHz. ALL the mobo's I have have the LT chip on the bottom. What's weird is a couple of the powerbooks had these CPU's in them with the mobo with the LT chip. Maybe they were replaced with the wrong ones or something. I wonder if there is some setting for the drive that can be changed ? thanks, Mad Dog This is what happens when I read posted too late at night. Your issue isn't exactly as mine was. I had a WS II with a stock G3/282 in it. The TravelStar HD was an older model without the liquid bearing. Something about the placement of the HD in the WS causes the older drives to freeze up, something about magnetism... Anyway the older drives need to have some kind of shielding placed on them to keep them from locking up. The one I had was really bad; it would lock up after going to sleep; at times it would lock up on start up; at times is would lock up if it idled to long (after I disabled the sleep mode). Since your machine seems to lock up regardless of the OS, perhaps the HD is the problem. I don't believe there are any settings on the HD itself to change. I suggested this because you seem to steer away from the heat issue. I don't recall if the fan on my WS runs full time, though I imagine it must. If yours doesn't, perhaps the fan itself is defective or the connector is not making full contact. You're right it does seem to be a software issue with 9 since the machine performs with the cache write-through on in X. Perhaps you should contact Daystar about this; they were always quite helpful to me with the upgrades I made on my older Power PC's, very responsive. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... Re: Wallstreet Dual-Boot Issues ..... OS 9 not working ... sigh
My Fellow PowerBook-philes, Well, I wrassled, and then wrestled, with my PowerBook Wallstreet with the processor upgrade (466 mhz CPU, probably from NewerTech) and have come to the following conclusion: My processor upgrade is incompatible with OS 9. It does work with OS X.2, however. OSX.2 has the screen backlight going dark, though. So the thought is maybe trying to install OS X.3, but then I have an issue with no OS X.3 disks. I need to recoup all costs on this machine plus some profit to make up for some of the loss on another machine (a PowerBook Wallstreet, 1gig HD, 233mhz) which I will inevitable have. I don't see being able to do this without getting the screen problem fixed, so I will probably have to try and find some OS X.3 CDs for cheap. (I tried doing an install of OS X.4 on a Pismo, then switching the drive like I heard you could do for a Lombard, but no dice ) I sure wish I knew why my CPU won't work with OS 9, though. If anyone has had a similar experience, let me know. I am not sure if the CPU upgrade is a NewerTech one or some other company (it IS a 466mhz G3, that much I DO know). Sincerely, Pacer the Loon. James Sanderson wrote: I have a WS I that had the same issues only in in X.2.x. When I upgraded to X.3.x, the backlighting and display sleep went away problems and never came back. I will admit that I have never tried putting the hard drive to sieep because I used to have an old Travelstar 20 GB that would lock up if it did. I never changed the setting after I changed the hard drive. If you don't have Panther or you don't want to go through the trouble of upgrading (the upgrade requires you to use Xpostfacto 3), let the buyer put it on the machine. Take X off. The machine is upgradeable and runs X.3 competently even with only 160 MB's, which is all I have on mine. It's not blazing fast; it's useable if all the buyer wants is to do word processing, reading mail, and surfing the internet. I know that the more memory there is the better the machine operates; I simply haven't put it on this one. Forget all this other stuff. It doesn't sound like it's worth the hassle, especially if you want to sell it. -- G-Books is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and...
