Re: WiFI antenna

2006-01-28 Thread Andrew in Ann Arbor

Has anyone ever come up with a way of connecting some kind of external
antenna to the PB to boost signal connectivity? I've got the G4 AL
15" machine, and I don't even see a decent place to attach something
to a screw. It would have been nice if there had been a plug or port
on the side of the screen that could have done this!

If your card slot is free you could look for a PC card adapter with an
antenna port.

Not as slick as the internal card though.
Probably easier to get a higher gain antenna on the access point.

Andrew in Ann Arbor
technology is the answer, what was the question?

Re: Wifi antenna

2006-01-27 Thread Tom Ethen
I agree completely!

This bizarre design change forces me to take my iBook when traveling and not
my Albook so I can get stronger WIFI connections. Now, my Pismo, because of
its larger size and much larger antenna (compared to a 12") is the WIFI
champ, but too big to travel with, for me anyway.

This still requires a physical connection to the card. I'm not keen
on making this kind of adaptation. Besides, if I read it correctly,
one of the ways to attach the antenna is to go thru the PC card slot?
I'm using my slot with a CF card.

I was told about, but haven't had a chance to track down, a USB
antenna--thin design, could fit easily into a carrying bag. I don't
know if these just use the physical connection to grab signal, or if
they need software drivers to work.

I ordered the YSC-REO5ET with the MC-card connector for the airport
card.

I first clicked on 2.4 GHz Antennas for 802.b/g WiFi, under the left
hand menu. If you look under range extenders, and click on a model,
there is a pull down menu that lets you choose the proper adapter for
the airport extreme, if that's what you have. If you have questions,
you can email the contact, he answers pretty promptly. For some reason,
they don't list all the options under the Apple Airport Compatible
section.

One thing that you can do, which I did, is get a second router, there
are some inexpensive ones that you might find on ebay or at one of
the usual places. You set up that router as an AP, access point, at
another location in your apartment. This will extend your signal. You
do have to connect it via ethernet cable to your router My apartment,
a duplex with 6" thick concrete floors and ceilings and cinderblock
walls, didn't interfere with my Belkin Pre N router until a next-door
neighbor installed the same router. I could not get a signal anymore
in certain parts of the house, but his came through strong enough for
me to accidentally lock on. He had no security and a slow cable
service. Fortunately I still had my older Belkin 54g. Creating an AP
on that solved the problem. I also got him to secure his network.

Re: Wifi antenna

What kind of base station or WAP do you have? If it has an external
antenna, you're in luck. There are hi-gain antennas avaiable,
sometimes featured at for about $10. There are
ominidirectional ones and directional. I tried an omnidirectional one
first, but since my WAP is at one end of a long house and downstairs,
and the place I often use my 15" AlBook is upstairs in a location
with some interferrence, that didn't work well enough.

I then got a Hawkings dirctional anteanna and that works much better
for me. I also bought an antenna extension cable so I could mount the
antenna in the optimal location, high up on a wall downstairs and
pointing slightly upward.

Wifi antenna

2006-01-26 Thread Howard Katz
I've got a situation where I'm trying to use the wifi connection in my
'book with a weak base station signal--too much brick and steel in the
way--I can get connected, but it's not stable.

That's why I bought the Aria. It's too much trouble dealing with
third-party hacked drivers when there are easily obtained cards that
work out of the box. I think there are still quite a few Lombard users

You are welcome, I've seen through perusing the list that you had a

my 3400c as an Airport card under OS 9.1. And I was tired of futzing

Hey Everybody especially Caleb and Mad Dog; If anyone is interested I
just picked up a Motorola WN825G wireless notebook adapter card from
Ebay and it is currently working in my 400MHZ Lombard and shows up as an
Airport card. I am using OS X.2.8. I got the card for $18.00 which was
not bad at all, but I didn't exactly like the shipping cost which was
$14.00 which I thought was rather steep for a Priority Mail package but
I never found any any cheaper so i went for it and now I no longer have
to deal with trying to find drivers for the PCMCIA card. The reason I
thought of trying this card is because I have a Motorola1810G PCI card
in my B&W as well as in my Sawtooth that also shows up as an Airport

$70 was a bit steep for the card, but I figured that it's worth the
extra dough to get it when the battery gets in.

Hi Vicki thanks for the information, I was wondering about this PCMCIA

I have an orinco Gold WIFI card that only works

I guess the responses to my post sum up the the core question.

Which card brands will work BOTH under OS9 and OSX?

I'm very impressed with the AeroCard Plus from MacSense. Comes with
drivers for both OS'es, and seems to have a somewhat stronger reception
than the Orinoco Gold in my Wallstreet.

Hi Dave.

The Cisco 340 and 350 series of cards work under OS-X and OS-9 with the
Cisco software. Also the Dell TrueMobile 1100 Series is an OEM of the Cisco
340. I have flashed a Dell card with the Cisco Firmware.

The Cisco software has a feature like the Classic Stumbler, which lets you
see all available wireless networks.

All of these cards support 802.11b only. I don't know of any card that will
work native with AirPort software in both OS-9 & OS-X.

Follow the links on my Wireless FAQ to the Cisco pages with software and
ROM information for using these cards on a Mac.

Dave:

This won't work for OS9, but it will work with OS 10.2.6 and later.
It's relatively inexpensive ... a possibility is you could get two
cards ... one for OS X and one for OS 9.

This is from dealmac.com ... my wife is currently using one on a
Tibook and OS X - Tiger.

For the card to be recognized in OS 9, you need to make sure you find
an older card. For OS X, you will need additional driver so make sure
you check the compatibility list of the driver before buying a card.

Yes that's right, it had a square/rectangular/boxy end...not tapered...which
I could see in the pictures the different manufacturers displayed.

Older is better...and then a direct website to the right card is also very
helpful.

Just one word of caution: from time to time, the manufacturers of these
cards will change the chipset of their cards which render them incompatible.

Re: battery power on wifi, G3 clamshell

2005-04-13 Thread Matthew Faulds
After some initial problems with batteries we bought a new battery for 466
clamshell ibook and we get somewhere around 4- 4 1/2 hours use with airport.
If watching a DVD you get full film plus about an hour. That is running
latest version of Panther mind you. Watch out for funny battery problems
when updating OS!

I reckon it's worth getting a new battery just for the lack of hassle. Ours
is BTI (Battery Tech)

Sounds pretty normal to me. Two hours with wireless seems good. Better
than I get with my Blueberry! A new battery may help, but I don't think
you will get 3 hours from a new battery while wireless.

Hi Kristina,\
Now that I know what you are using I opened 9.1 in one of my computers
to remember and check the settings. To make Netscape open when you
click the links in your emai, do the following: Go to the apple menu
and open *control panels* and navigate down to *Internet* control
panel and open. Scroll across to the *Web* tab and open. Look down at
the bottom of the panel and you'll see *Default Web Browser*... change
the setting to Netscape. Just scroll down till you see it. While you
have that panel open you can make sure some of your other settings are
correct. Open up the *E-mail* tab. Make sure that your account
settings are correct, ie: user id, incoming and outgoing mail servers
and password. At the bottom of that panel you can select the email
application that you want to use. Close the panel and choose to save
the changes.

free but only works with OSX.

The control panel changes should fix the above.

Open Netscape. I don't know what version you have... I only have
"Netscape Communicator 4.8" which I don't use anymore. Find Netscape
*preferences*, mine are under the *Edit" menu. When you get the prefs
open you should see a whole list of things. Find *Identity* and make
sure the setting are correct. You don't have to fill in all the stuff
in that panel. Just make sure that your name or nickname and email
address is correct. Then find *Mail Servers* this is the important
panel. Make sure that the *Outgoing mail (SMTP) server* has the
correct info... the same that you set up in your Internet control
panel in system control panels. And at the top of that same panel make
sure that *incoming mail server* is correctly set. This should enable
your sending emails from your Netscape App. Hope that this helps.

sending from Netscape's email function... You select it from a netscape page

You might luck out with a new battery, but don't count on it. The
results you're getting sound about right. I'm told the rule of thumb
is that using Airport cuts your battery time to about half.

It makes it difficult to soar into the wireless blue yonder when
you're weighed down by extra batteries. Maybe the G5 laptops will come
with solar chargers. Starbucks will have to reserve all the sunny

WiFi list+another?r2

2005-04-09 Thread Kristina Rost
Thanks JP,

>From a quick look it looks like either the lynksys or the netgear will work
if I use a different driver than Apple's airport, the resident software of
9.1. is that right?

My other questions are this:

1] there a decent mac program which will do about the same thing as eBay's
turbo lister?

and...

2] Why or how can I get my OE emails to automatically open netscape when I
click on the link in the body email.

3] And I can't seem to get my netscape mail to work for Sending, it
receives, but asks for the pop mail addy and I give it the right answer (i
think) but I don't know...I must not be holding my mouth just right.

Eventually I will get all this tech worked out and I will just
disappear...or think of new things to do to bother you guys.

but as always I thank you

Re: battery power on wifi, G3 clamshell

2005-04-09 Thread victoria duggan
Hi I have been using my new ibook for two weeks now and the battery
only lasts for 3 hrs 50 with the airport card fitted and that is a new
book. So 2hr + from a clamshell is good.

I also have a 3400c with wifi via a mac wireless card, with the cd
loaded and wireless being used for the net the best i get from that is
2hrs 30 mins and that is also a new battery,

To save your battery life you need to set the book up to the way you
like but only using the minimal power then the life should increase,
for example the screen only at half brightness, the sound turned down
to a minimum. Also if you have a book with removable drives then take
the cd out and put in a space saver or a floppy drive. If the drive can
not be removed leave the door open slightly the the system does not
keep accessing the drive to check if there is anything there, keep the
hdd spun down when doing text or not doing heavy access. turn off power
to inactive devices IE pcmcia cards etc.

all these need to be taken into account when you use the book, and if
you do then you will find that you will always have enough power for
the things that you need.

Sounds pretty normal to me. Two hours with wireless seems good. Better
than I get with my Blueberry! A new battery may help, but I don't think
you will get 3 hours from a new battery while wireless.

battery power on wifi, G3 clamshell

2005-04-08 Thread Andrea Stansbury
Okay, I got the airport card for my clamshell, love it to death and
enjoy being completely wire-free. However I noticed with the airport
card, the battery life is seriously diminished. If I plan on using it
without the power cord for any reason for a long time, I'll turn the
screen brightness down and turn the sound off. that doesn't seem to
make a huge difference, but it makes a little bit of one. It says it
will work for like close to 2 hours. Does the battery need replacing
or is this average for an older laptop? I noticed it gets down to a
certain level with the battery displaying in red and then *boom* it
shuts down and goes into sleep mode til I plug it back in.

Any solutions or ideas? Should I just get a new battery?

My understanding is that WiMax is the latest technology

Cliff & Kristina,
It sounds like Cliff's ISP uses the Motorola Canopy WiMax system. I
just signed up with a local ISP that is fielding it here in my area
of California; the install is in a couple of weeks. When they were
testing to see the signal strength, the connection speed was around
450 Kbps, IIRC, much better than my 28.8 Kbps connection on dial-up,
and this was 13.8 miles from their access point on Boomer Mountain.

Cliff, does anything on this site look familiar?

Have you tried the Proxim card with the Apple Airport drivers? I thought
that card was one of those that "worked like an Airport card."

Does the card have an LED? If so, it should blink as the computer

If you use Apple System Profiler, is the card slot listed? Due to vibration
or a shock, it is possible that the card cage has been dislodged. I don't
know if the Lombard is similar to the Wallstreet, but when I replaced mine
on my previous Wallstreet, it had been a major undertaking, as I had to
completely disassemble the Wallstreet to get to the PC card cage...

Lombard not recognizing Wifi card

2005-03-25 Thread Dennis Wurster
Hello all,
I'm new to this list but I've been on the swap-list for years.
A client of mine has me investigating something strange on his Lombard,
333/512MB OS 9.2.2

Proxim Skyline 802.11b PC Card for Notebooks
I just did a re-format and re-install of 9.2.1 and updated to 9.2.2
Next, I installed the drivers at
http://www.proxim.com/support/all/orinoco/software/
dl2002_orinoco_client_r72_macos.html

but the setup utility can't find the card, nor does the 'wireless' LED
on the card light up.

I've tried zapping PRAM and resetting power manager, and going back to
8.6 with the stock CDs too.

I also tried the IOXperts generic wifi drivers (www.ioxperts.com) which
also didn't report seeing a card.

Lastly, I tried a NetGear 802.11b Wireless PC Card (MA 401), which also
wasn't recognized.

Anyone have any tips? Is there a way to 'reset' the PC Card slot? I
can't seem to find a way to make sure it's getting power.

Thanks,

For the USB ones you need drivers, D-link sells a usb adapter with an
OS X driver.

for the external boxes, we've used both D-Link and Netgear models;
they're largely plug-n-play with anything that's got an ethernet port.

One of them's connected to a laserjet in a difficult-to-wire corner.
If you want to access their advanced features, like WEP keys, etc, you
need to use something capable of running a web browser, but they're
great.

Any OS will work, since they simply appear to be a ethernet connection.
I used my 540C running 8.1 to configure the D-link ones...

Ethernet WiFi adapters - from AirPort in TiBook ???

2005-02-04 Thread Frank Cornew
What's the experience been with standalone ethernet to WiFi adapters?
(beyond that they need external power) Can anyone recommend specific
units? b or g, OSX or 9

Looks like I need to go that route, and would like to get something
that works without too much pain... First shot at a Linksys USB
adapter appears to have been a deadend as I have been stumped in
attempting to get a mac to network out of the USB port...

Not really. Remember that, in order for you to be able to download a file
from the Internet on your iBook and put it on your server, you need to have
one of your server's volume mounted on your iBook (that means file sharing).
So, basically, the file gets from the Internet through ADSL, then through
the router, then your iBook, then through the router again to finally end on
your server...

BTW, I even think that 20-50KB/s on Caracho is very optimistic!

iBook & G-Mac server - WiFi functions ???

2005-01-14 Thread Larry le Mac
I am planning to have a G-Mac with 5 harddisks internally
and two external FW disks, totalling about 1TB, to house
my software, data, music, films etc.
I am then planning to buy a new iBook with AirPort so that
I can do everything from anywhere in the house or in the
garden without ties.
However,
Let's say I'm logged into a Carracho server with the iBook
and have one of the servers disks mounted, then I download
something from the server to the server's disk.
- Would the download then go:
ADSL-router-iBook-router-server or directly to the server ???

Very strange, OS X provides the network access, Classic just uses the
connection through OS X. Are you running 9.2.2? Best I can think of
is to re-install Classic.

Honestly, I can't see anything that looks to be significant. While the
antenna boards are not the same parts, they have the same circuitry (such
as it is!) and location, the later boards being slightly smaller than the
early ones. Also, there appears to be the same absence of anti-EMI
coating under the plastic edge where they reside.

I think the main problem with TiBook reception is the antennae location,
down low at the sides of the case where it's easy to block them with your
hands or other radiation blockers. I have big hands that tend to flop
over the side edges, so maybe reception problems are worse for those
folks with larger hands, or those who rest their hands over those edges
at any rate? OTOH . . .

Interestingly, just last night I rebuilt _another_ 667 DVI and it seems
to have much better reception than did my old 667 DVI on its built-in
antennae. Maybe I'm just dreaming . . . perhaps I better do some
scientific tests to see what's up!
So I've narrowed my choices down to either a DVI TiBook, or G4 iBook
(14"). Since my home is a smaller one level wood framed house, the
furtherest I ever get away from my Sawtooth basestation isn't really
more than 20', and I rarely use Airport outside the house. If I take it
down to my shop, I have an iPAQ connection point that I don't get more
than 30' from with no walls to interfere, so maybe Airport reception on
the tiBook wouldn't be a real big deal. I have an external wifi card too
if needed. And TiBooks have been around long enough to know what typical
problems there are with them. OTOH, the G4 iBooks are still fairly new,
so the jury is still out on those, but even used would likely still have
a warranty and be eligable for Applecare. Tried and true versus new and
unknown. Pretty tough call!
Opinions? Recommendations? First hand experience with the G4 iBook?
Also, other than eBay or the swap list, where would be a good place to
look for a good used DVI TiBook?

I have the 867 myself and, though I have only my desktop G4 w/Airport for
comparison, I've not experienced any problems or signal weakness. Albeit
I'm not any where near pushing the 300 ft (?) limit. I'm in a 2nd floor
apartment and have been able to get my signal (2-3 arcs) both in front
and out back. Shold I have a problem I'll likely resort to some of the
"shifting" or tapping" (?) tactics discussed elsewhere.

BTW - I too use a Belkin wireless router.

Just to add my experience... I have both an 800MHz 15" Tibook and a 12"
867MHz AlBook using AP and AP Extreme respectively. I live in a duplex
apt with 6" concrete floors and cinder block walls. I can take these
books to any part of the house, upstairs or downstairs and I have all
the arcs showing full reception. I'm using a Belkin wireless router as
the transmitter and everything has been functioning without drops or
loss.

Well, I can't really comment on Titanium PowerBooks since I've never used
one, but it's been widely mentioned that the Titanium alloy they used was
kind of blocking the WiFi reception.

Now, it seems that Aluminum doesn't have this problem. I have been using a
17" for about a month now and I find the WiFi reception as good as the one I
was getting on my previous PowerBook G3.

I have heard so - and I hope so as I'm replacing my TiBook with a new
a aluminium model next week! Wireless reception on my TiBook varies
considerably, depending on position or even rotation. This has been
discussed many times here.

With a 20GB drive, it's probably a second generation TiBook (Onyx 550/667
non-DVI):
<http://lowendmac.com/pb2/g4-guide.html>

Easy way to tell pre-DVI 667 from DVI 667 is to open the back flap and
check for the video out type connector, VGA or DVI. Also, the pre-DVI has
an infrared port on the back, DVI does not. The DVI model is worth more,
its 133mHz bus, L3 cache and faster video chip add considerable speed.

US$800-900 is about the going rate for a pre-DVI 667 TiBook, per the
market-maker eBay. The AP card is itself worth ~$100 these days so your
deal is decent though not super-cheap. But as with all items of this
nature, the vendor's warranty, support and reputation are the most
important things.

As others have mentioned, the wifi reception is poor in all the TiBook
models. I got so fed up with the useless wifi in my 667 DVI I added a
pair of antennae swiped from a clamshell iBook. Looks pretty crappy (and
the antennae stick out rather inconveniently) but the reception is
outstanding!:

Re: WiFi dies under Classic

2004-07-10 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Classic networking doesn't directly access the hardware, it accesses
the network through OS X. That means that the Open Transport stack
is unloading for some reason. Try disabling any non-OS 9 extensions
and control panels.
It's probably not the OT kernel. Although OT under 9.1 was hardly
stable (the TCP/IP stack would die on me frequently), it's very
stable in 9.2.x.

It's probably the AirPort driver in Classic that's causing the
problem and not OT. See my previous post for more details. Remember
that he said that AirPort would stop seeing any networks. AirPort
doesn't need OT to see networks - you can see any number of networks
(and connect to any of them) even with TCP/IP (and the rest of OT)
completely disabled. OT only comes into play when you set AppleTalk
to your AirPort connection or point TCP/IP to your AirPort
connection...

Re: WiFi dies under Classic

2004-07-09 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Thanks, Drew. Yup, am using WEP. How does that come into play?
I've found that there's a subtle bug in AirPort when using WEP. From
time to time, AirPort will somehow forget that it's connected to a
network and will refuse to see any networks whatsoever. This only
happens when I'm connected to a network using WEP. It doesn't happen
when I turn WEP off.

I have found a workaround that prevents this from happening. Namely,
to maintain a constant connection, I have to keep the control strip
expanded with the AirPort control strip module visible. Even then, I
sometimes drop my connection when waking from sleep. The fix to
recover my connection is to turn AirPort off, then turn it back on
again. It comes back up just fine.

I should note that this is happening in Mac OS 9.2.2 (as opposed to
Classic). I don't run OS X, so I can't say if this is really what's
happening to you.

I also don't know if it would help to completely disable the control
strip (as opposed to just collapsing it).

Peace,
Drew
 >
 Are you using WEP?
Next time, instead quiting Classic, try just cycling AirPort in
Classic (turn AirPort off and on inside Classic).

Yeah, I know. The documentation with the driver is for OS 10.1. :-)

But I was actually referring to *my* logging of information, which
also comes from input from other users (like this list, for
instance). So -- hypothetically speaking -- what you or I may say
about an open source item may not still be true several weeks or
months from now, depending on how much activity there is in its
improvement.

Even though FreePPP wasn't open source (but freeware), I remember how
quickly changes occurred in it during one particular stretch of time.

Their explanation, not mine. But thanks for the clarification. It's
beginning to look more and more like the IOXperts driver is a much
better choice.

There's no question whether the sourceforge driver works or not, it's
just a matter of limitations and how many there are. I was busy
slaying dragons last night and ran across the answers to my
questions. The thing that makes this driver difficult is that it's
open source and is constantly being improved. So, what might have
been true (and logged as such) 3 or 4 weeks ago, may not necessarily
be true today.

Nonetheless, this is the information they are expounding currently:

* The driver supports AppleTalk over IP but will not yet allow
printing to AppleTalk printers. We are working to fix this. To
connect to other Macs type: afp://ip-address in the connect to server
dialog (e.g. afp://10.0.1.3).

* If you have installed the latest version of the driver, both WEP
and selection of closed networks are now supported for certain
cards!! (They indicate which cards are supported)

* The thing that *really* frosts my cake is that the Apple Internet
Connect app does not recognize the sourceforge driver, thus the
Airport menu-bar icon and menu are not available when using that
driver. If I find out that Internet Connect recognizes the IOXperts
driver, that might just be enough to push me into paying for it.

The final thing that I found very disappointing was apparently no OS
X "stumbler" seems to support wireless PCMCIA cards. That has
nothing to do with the sourceforce driver, but it's really
aggravating. I hope somebody proves me wrong on that one.

Anyway, that's the latest scoop as I have run across it.

Later,

Bob

are a number of users on this list that currently use, or have had in
the past used, the Sourceforge wireless driver. I like to get some
verification that this information is true or not (the specific card
was not indicated):

Under OS X, the Orinoco card works (mostly) if you use the free
wirelessdriver from Sourceforge. (My paraphrasing follows: WEP
encryption and AppleTalk do not work with this driver.)

Thanks,

Bob

WiFi on Old PowerBooks -- Yes You Can!!

2004-06-04 Thread Bob
I realize this is a G3 list and that there's another list for pre-G3
PowerBook list. However some on this list may have pre-G3 'books in
the closet. Or you may have friends or relatives with older units.
The following information might take these old PBs out of the dust
bunnies and back into useful service. If this is rehashed news on the
list, I apologize.

Normally people think of wireless communication (i.e. IEEE803.11b/g
or Airport) in terms of G3 PowerBooks and newer. But those of you
that have 3400, 1400, even 5300 or 190 PowerBooks, you can utilize
current technology with your legacy units.

The following is a URL giving you step-by-step instructions on how to
get things up and running, plus links to find practically everything
you need to do it.

I hope this proves useful to some of you.

Bob

Re: ...WiFi why?.....

Is there an advantage to connecting the printer directly to the
router? (maybe no desktop at the router?)
precisely -- for now, I'm 100% portable. the old desktop is retired
(awaiting some upgrades), and the 17" G4 'book is serving me well. now
that I'm fully engulfed in the portable life, I would hate being
tethered to the desk for printing! ;)

"a router that will let you print to a USB printer connected to the
router" I'm not sure if I am following this exactly.
First, my situation. I use a Belkin router that has wireless (b) and 4
ethernet ports. My daughter has an iMac with an Epson USB printer. My
son
hooks up his PC via ethernet and I use my Pismo w/ an airport card. I
can
easily print over the network to my daughters Epson from my Pismo. No
running back to her desk every time I need to use it. So yes, with a
Belkin
(for $40 from Best Buy) I can print using this USB printer.
Second, my question. Is there an advantage to connecting the printer
directly to the router? (maybe no desktop at the router?) Or is my
situation
what you meant. My router happens to have a USB port, but I thought it
was
for the internet connection. I'm at work, so can't look at the manual
until
I get home.

Thanks for any enlightenment,
Dan-
If the printer is hooked up directly to the router then the iMac
wouldn't need to be running for others to print. I have a Canon inkjet
hooked up to my iMac and when I want to print something in color I have
to go wake it up.

that's my concern as well. I'll be purchasing a wireless station in the
next few weeks, but I haven't had time to do much research. wireless
USB would be a huge benefit in my studio, since it would keep me from
running back into the office every time I need to print to my laser. I
don't like the price of Apple's model, but that is a big advantage.
One reason why I am seriously considering purchasing an HP 5850 - it's
802.11b out of the box!
I have that printer. I tested it out using wireless but have it
connected wired. That's mainly because there was already an Ethernet
connection there from the previous printer. I like the printer. It
takes a while before it starts to print but it works fine otherwise.

Yes the advantage is that you can print to it w/o any other computer being
connected to the printer. That means that there does not need to be a
computer plugged in/turned on for the printer to work.

Many routers/cable modems have USB connectors but they are only for
network connection, not peripherals.

There are a number of wireless USB printer servers available in the $50-$100
range and what they lack in Mac friendliness and documentation they can make
up for in price. After my original base station died this winter I did some
research and finally decided to buy another from Apple for three reasons:

1) it integrated the USB printer server with the base station and that made
it about $40 more expensive than the other stations/servers I was looking at

2) Apple's software which makes setting it up a breeze - but to be honest it
isn't hard to set up a D-Link or any other station. They use a web browser
rather than a friendly Mac program

3) firmware issues - oftentimes companies just don't get around to issuing
firmware upgrades that don't require a PC. Sure, I have a PC at home but the
less I have to use it the happier I am, and I really prefer keeping it
segregated from the internet.

When you buy be sure to do your research. There are some printers that
cannot be served and some that can be served in the PC world but not the
Mac.
