Re: Fwd: [newbie] How to revive CUPS?

2001-06-14 Thread Till Kamppeter

The HP LaserJet 1200 is a native PostScript printer. It understands also
PCL and does 1200 dpi with the lj5gray driver (in Mandrake 8.1 also
the pxlmono driver will work), but to make all features available use
it as a PostScript printer. Go to

http://hp.sourceforge.net/

and download only the PPD file for the printer:

http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/~checkout~/lpr/ppds/hp/HP_LaserJet_1200.ppd?rev=1.2content-type=text/plain

DO NOT install the Enhanced Printing System offered there.

Copy the PPD file to /usr/share/cups/model and restart the CUPS daemon
with service cups restart. Now set up a queue for this printer,
preferrably with kups. If you want true 1200 dpi, turn off
FastRes1200 and select 1200 dpi as resolution. In kups right-click
on the printer and choose Configure Printer to set the options.

The LaserJet 1200 is still not in the database of www.linuxprinting.org,
but you can consider it as working perfectly, as all printers with
PostScript interpreter in their hardware.

For some reason, the only available setting for 600dpi output with the

solution for which was to use the respective GIMP driver.

I was wondering whether you might be able to answer another query. I'm

The case that one cnot enter something with the keyboard is a known
problem of the Mandrake Control Center. It happens to me, too, but only
sometimes. If you close the Control Center or printerdrake and open it
again, it should normally work.

But as mentioned there are better alternatives for printerdrake: kups
is the most sophisticated printer admin program, and there is also a web
interface (http://localhost:631/). They both have more functionality
than printerdrake.

pup does not add CUPS queues, PUP is a program to adjust the default
settings of laser printers and also gives some maintanance options for
Lexmark inkjets. It is independent of CUPS or LPD. You start it logged
in as root and it sends its commands directly to the printer port.
Therefore it works only with local printers.

Re: [newbie] (Newbie) Printer for Linux

2001-03-28 Thread Till Kamppeter

The Z52 works well with the drivers provided by Lexmark and also with
the GIMP-Print driver of the new Mandrake 8.0. But note that the Lexmark
drivers are non-free software so that we cannot recompile them for
future distros and we can only provide them on our commercial CDs. So I
recommend an Epson Stylus printer. Epson publishes the protocols of
their printers and so their support is kept up to date in GIMP-Print. So
Epsons are always well supported.

Re: [newbie] printer key

2001-02-17 Thread Till Kamppeter

You do not need the proprietary Lexmark driver which does not fit well
in the CUPS printing system of Linux Mandrake 7.2.

Download and update your ghostscript and cups-drivers packages (at least
ghostscript: 5.50-56mdk, cups-driver: 1.0-14mdk) as described for an
older update on

   http://www.mandrakeforum.com/article.php3?sid=20001214090405

then restart the CUPS daemon with

   service cups restart

(or by clicking the two gears in the window of KUPS).

Now you can start KUPS ("kups " at the prompt) or "printerdrake" and
add a new printer. In the list of manufacturers and models choose the
Lexmark Z52. In "printerdrake" there is an entry with "CUPS+GIMP-print",
in CUPS you must search for "LEXMARK Z52". When you have chosen it, you
can choose resolutions up to 1200x1200 dpi and you get an excellent
image quality. The printer works with both parallel and USB with this
driver.

[newbie] Improving the GNU/Linux printing support

2001-02-12 Thread Till Kamppeter

Oi,

now I have entered the execution data of all printer drivers listed on
www.linuxprinting.org (except the Seiko label printer driver "slap"
which does not support PostScript or graphics input), which means that
when you update to the newest packages of GhostScript and CUPS-Drivers
from the Cooker (backport for 7.2 comes later) all printers listed on
www.linuxprinting.org will work as described there.

But many printers (especially laser printers) do not simply print the
document as generated by the printer driver, they accept also some extra
commands (so-called PJL commands), sent before the job is sent, to
access special printing modes as toner saving mode, smoothing of edges
(REt), input tray selection, usage of finishers, ... This works for both
PostSctipt and non-PostScript printers.

Unfortunately, the database of www.linuxprinting.org does not contain
many PJL commands, and I have found out how to read the available ones
out of the printer. So I ask you to read out the PJL options of your
printer and send them to me (to me, not onto the lists, to prevent them
from being flooded). Read the attached file or surf to

   http://www.linuxtag.org/2001/deutsch/showitem.php3?item=194lang=en

to see a call written by Kurt Pfeifle who is the author of many printing
articles in the german "Linux Magazin". It contains all info which you
need to do the check.

Thank you in advance for your PJL option files.

Title: Call for Support: Collection of valid PJL commands for

Call For Support:
Collection Of Valid PJL Commands For
All Printers By "Linuxprinting.org"

Every user with a printer can help to achieve a better Linux print
support. Wanna help out?

PJL And The Linuxprinting Database

You are asked to help fill the Linuxprinting.org Database with valid pieces of info concerning the PJL commands understood by your printer. Every user with a printer connected to a parallel or USB port can help to achieve a better Linux support for his printer (if not working perfectly already).

The Database has been built and accumulated by Grant Taylor, the well-known author of the Linux Printing
HOWTO for quite some time. It is a key for the achievement of one (or some?) hi class Free printing system(s) for Linux. For quite a few printers the data about working PJL commands are still very incomplete. The quicker and the more precise this gap is filled the more profound and rapid the Linux support for modern printers in a Linux environment (and, in fact, amongst other Free Unix-like operating systems as well as non-Free ones) will develop in the months ahead. The database is not just of a huge advantage for CUPS -- other printing and spooling systems will also benefit a lot, like BSD-LPD,
LPRng or PDQ.

On the backgrounds and workings of this database you might want to read a bit in my (so far German-only) "CUPS-FAQ". If there is comcern, I could do a translation of a more detailed explanation of this action also comprehensible for newbies. (Hello, you editors of printed magazines: isn't this a good story for you as well? The author's fee I'll donate to a free software project... ;-)

This here is just a short shot.

A Shell Script To Read The PJL Capabilities Off The Printer

Keying in the PJL info for thousands of printers off the vendor's documentation is very tiring and error-prone. Is this docu available at all? Is it complete? Is it correct? -- There's a better way to find out, with your help: ask you printer directly, what it supports...
Till Kamppeter, architect and maintainer of the new Mandrake 7.2 printing system which chose CUPS to be the premium install (Till is also author
of the free GUI Tool for CUPS, XPP), has presented a small shell script to help you do the job. Every Linux (and maybe, BSD) supporter can use it to ask his printer(s) about their level of PJL support. The results will go into the database which is designed to become the repository of automatic driver and printer configuration files for the major spooling systems CUPS, LPD, LPRng and PDQ.

Just copy the 6 line shell script beneath, save it with an easy to remember name of your joice and mak it executable:

   #!/bin/sh
   echo &quo

The old packages do not need to exist for the update, but you should
have a complete set of packages for being able to print:

With CUPS until 1.1.4-8mdk

   cups

With CUPS from 1.1.4-9mdk on

   cups
   cups-common
   libcups1

In all cases in addition

   ghostscript
   cups-drivers

The graphical frontend packages are (they are not necessarily needed for
being able to print).

   kups
   qtcups
   xpp

and from qtcups 1.1-1mdk on also

   libqtcups1

From cups-1.1.5 on you need also

   openssl

Make also sure that you do not have ESP Print Pro on your machine. To
check this, enter

rpm -qa | grep -i printpro

If this command produces output, you have to remove the listed packages
and to remove and install all the cups-related packages afterwards. In
this case I recommend that you update to the newest versions of all
packages (cups-1.1.5-2mdk, cups-drivers-1.0-2.1mdk,
ghostscript-5.50-48mdk).

[Fwd: [newbie] SMB 2.0.6 printing under Mandrake 7.2 w/ CUPS]

2001-01-03 Thread Till Kamppeter

I)

You are really using Samba 2.0.6? Mandrake 7.2 comes with 2.0.7.

It seems like a good place to start with this before I go into all of my
config files is to explain this section. (I don't know how much I possibly
broke doing this.) I started using Samba 2.0.7 with mdk 7.2 on both my main
Linux box and my brother's main Linux box, but the problems I had where so
severe and made so little sense to me that I de-installed all of the Samba
packages and loaded the packages from mdk 7.1.

II) Here is a brief overview of how the machines where configured:
1. My brother's machine was set up to do file services to 2 Windows ME
clients and a Windows 98 client. (Then I had my Linux box over there using
NFS with his machine as the server for a short period.) He also has two NICs
in the machine and uses it to act as a filtering masq box through a cable
modem (Road Runner). His smb.conf file is configured similar to mine except
that he uses a different workgroup name and he specifies his internal
interface for use with SMB. (interfaces = 192.168.0.0/24 with his subnet
being 192.168.0).

2. My main Linux box has one NIC and at the time of installation I did not
have a printer to configure.

III) Here are the problems that I ran into:
1. On my brother's system I could connect with Windows ME and Samba on my
Linux box, but after making three connections, I could make no more. Also
the Windows 98 box could see the server, but could not access it.

2. On my system at my place (as opposed to my brother's) I could get Windows
ME to connect to my Linux box, but I could not get Windows 98 to connect to
my Linux box. (Different Linux boxes, slightly different config files, and a
different Windows 98 machine. Neither Windows 98 machines had problems
before related to Samba.)

IV) All of problems listed above went away when I went back a revision.

V) The smb.conf files should be attached. (I attached mine first.) Please
note that we do have smb.passwd files set up. I even destroyed and redid my
brother's when we started having problems even though I didn't think that it
would do anything and I proved myself right. (Logic being if Windows ME can
log in then Windows 98 should, but I can't think of anything better to do.)

VI) It seems to me that before I go much further into my printer
configuration that I should really resolve the Samba file services portion of
the problem. When I browsed through the FAQs that you pointed me to, the
CUPS updates looked somewhat interesting, but I did not see anything that
affected me in the Samba update.

VII) I posted a message after the one that you responded to, but here is the
recap anyway: I eventually got CUPS printing to work through Samba. What I
did was to not only switch to 'raw' mode, but also to get rid if the -P
option. ('print command = lpr-cups -o raw # using client side printer
drivers.' instead of 'print command = lpr-cups -P 0 -o raw # using client
side printer drivers.') During this entire period I had my printer named lp.

VIII) I am not really sure what constitutes as a 'Generic Postscript Driver'
For Windows 98/ME. I remember a few years back I used the generic postscript
driver under Linux to get RH 5.0 (brand new revision back then) to talk to an
HP 5000M Color over the school LAN :-)

Re: [newbie] SMB 2.0.6 printing under Mandrake 7.2 w/ CUPS

2001-01-03 Thread Till Kamppeter

Oi,

The config files of the Samba 2.0.7 of Mandrake 7.2 are preconfigured
for usage with CUPS, so if you want to use your old config files you
have to overtake the printer-related lines from the new version. In
addition, it is possible that the the 2.0.6 version of Mandrake 7.1 has
no CUPS support compiled in, because that version of Mandrake was still
using LPD as printing system. So even with a correct /etc/smb.conf it is
possible, that your Samba will not work correctly.

I am not an expert in Samba configuration. So I will forward you mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and he can probably help you in configuring
Samba 2.0.7.

You will find updates for all CUPS-related packages there. To fix your

For PostScript files the font size is given by the file, but for simple
text file, scripts, program sources, and so on you can adjust the size.
Use the command

   xpp file name

to print the file. Then you get a window where you can choose the
printer. After choosing the desired printer click on "Options" and
another dialog appears. Click on the "Text" tab. Now lower the numbers
for "Characters per inch" and "Lines per inch". For C/C++ listings turn
on "Enhanced C-code printing". If characters at the borders are cut off,
adjust also the borders with the sliders.

under 7.2. All drivers of 7.1 are also available under 7.2. Note that
they are presented in another form now, because Mandrake 7.2 uses the
new printing system CUPS. There are also many new drivers, especially
GIMP-Print, which gives very high quality, especially on Epson Stylus
printers.

Try the following to get the USB working:

1. keep the printer turned on.

2. Edit /etc/sysconfig/usb adding a line: "PRINTER=yes". Restart the
affected daemons:

   service usb restart
   service cups restart

and see whether one can istall your printer now. If not, use the
parallel port and send me the output of the "lsmod" command.

Add the lines if they are missing and give the command

Re: [newbie] Printing problem

Do the following:

Do not reinstall Linux Mandrake 7.2.

Try to print directly to the laser printer by entering (you can use any
short text file):

   cat ~/.bashrc /dev/lp0

If this works (at least some of the text visible), there is a problem
with the printer spooler (CUPS or LPD), otherwise there is a problem
with the kernel and its modules or with the hardware.

To solve the printing spooler problem, try a clean reinstallation: clean
up your system by entering

   urpme cups lpr

saying yes to the deletion of all dependent packages and entering

   rpm -rf /etc/cups /var/log/cups /var/spool/cups /var/spool/lpd

Now install your laser printer as described in cups-print.txt or as in

   http://www.mandrakeuser.org/hardware/#4th

Try the installation of the printers with "printerdrake" at first.

Tell me exactly, step by step, what you have done, which program you
have used, which driver you have chosen, and so on. Does "kups" show the
printer ports? Do "printerdrake", "kups", and the web interface
(http://localhost:631/) autodetect the printers? Do you get error
messages? Can you print the test page, can you print from applications
as described.

If you still cannot print can you send me the files
/etc/cups/cupsd.conf, /etc/cups/printers.conf, /etc/cups/ppd/*.ppd,
/var/log/cups/error_log, and the output of the "lsmod" command.

Check also whether the CUPS daemon (the program which runs in the
background waiting for printing jobs and processing them) is running? Do

   ps auxwww|grep cups

If there is a line containing "cupsd" in the output, the daemon is
running. If not, enter

   service cups start

to start the CUPS daemon for the current session and

   chkconfig --add cups

to make the CUPS daemon automatically being started at every boot.

Now try the ink jet. Do the same as with the laser. If this printer is
not autodetected, enter

   modprobe printer
   service cups restart

and try again. Note that CUPS needs something like 30 seconds to come
up.

When you haveboth printers working, reboot and check whether they still
work. If the USB printer does not work any more but the laser printer
still works, edit the /etc/sysconfig/usb file adding the line

   PRINTER=yes

and do

   service USB restart
   service CUPS restart

and try to print on the USB printer again.

The printer uses the same driver as the DeskJet 550C, start "printtool"
and search for the entry "HP DeskJet 550C/560C/6xxC series". After
selecting that you will have the possibility to set the paper size and
the printing quality. Choose 24 (Floyd Steinberg color) or 32 (Sometimes
better than 24) bits per pixel to gain highest quality.

For the sound card try "sndconfig", it succeeds to configure some sound
cards where "sounddrake" has problems.

Connect the printer to the 7.2 box and install it with printerdrake or
kups as a local printer (see
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/hardware/hcups2.html). Check whether you
have set the options (paper size, resolution, ...) correctly so that you
can print from the 7.2 machine. To make the printers accessible from a
client which only runs LPD (your 5.3 machine), set up the CUPS-LPD mini
daemon which emulates LPD on your server (see
http://www.mandrakeuser.org/hardware/hcups4.html#lpdcl). On the client
(5.3 machine) you do now the same as you did if the server was a LPD
machine. The printer names of the emulated LPD are exactly the same as
of CUPS. So if you have given the same name to your printer on the 7.2
system as it had before you installed 7.2, you do not need to change
anything in the /etc/printcap of your 5.3 client.

2000-11-20 Thread Till Kamppeter

The printer musthave a fixed IP, because it does server tasks. It is not
possible to let it get an IP automatically from the DHCP server (the
address would be everytime different).

Do the following:

Enter "ifconfig" and look which IP is assigned to the card for your
local network. It is usually "192.168.0.1". So the network is
"192.168.0.". Assign an address inside this network to the printer, but
choose one which cannot be assigned by the DHCP server. With the default
setting in /etc/dhcpd.conf you can choose the fourth number of the
printer's IP from 2 to 15. So you can use 192.168.0.2 for example.

Please check the printer's manual for how to set this addres on the
printer.

In DrakConf you get printerdrake, the thing which searches the network
for printers is kups.

Here's a problem - It automatically scans the subnet for my external
NIC, but the printer is connected to the internal NIC which I have
set up to serve IPs using DHCP. I haven't configured the printer with
a specific IP address since the rest of my network are Macs and they
connect to the printer using appletalk and don't need an IP address.

First you must give an IP address to your printer. See the printer's
manual how to do so, Linux does TCP/IP networking and therefore it needs
IP addresses for all network devixes which it wants to access. The port
on which the printer listens is 9100 by default. Leave it on this value.
Make sure that the printer allows Socket or AppSocket access.

To let kups scan the other NIC do the sma as you have already done, but
in the window where you can scan the network, click on "Settings" and
change the IP address range to the internal network, then scan again. Or
type the address and the port of the printer directly into the fields on
the right.

Any suggestions? How do I get it to scan my second NIC? Do I need to
assign it an IP address first? How can I make sure the IP address
 doesn't change?

As I told the IP address has to be configured in the printer, it stores
it in a non-volatile memory and so it is conserved even if you turn off
the printer.

Posting your questions here makes them easier available for other users,
because they are not mixed ub with discussions about other problems.

3. New versions of the packages concerning printing for installation
under Linux Mandrake 7.2 you will find on

   http://www.mandrakesoft.com/~tkamppeter/packages/

Download and install the most recent version. If problems appear with
the most recent, take an older one and tell me exactly what problems

packages before I put them there. They are not official updates, use
them on your own risk. They should help you to get rid of problems due
to bugs in the released packages. To install the packages enter

Which printer model do you use? Did you set up the printer options after
installing the driver as I explained it to you? Note that the option
settings get lost when one changes the driver. If your printer is an HP
inkjet, note that the drivers with "Foomatic + cdj880" and "Foomatic +
cdj890" do not work with the default settings. The "Normal" quality is
broken. Use "Presentation" instead.

KEdit has really a bug and does not print at all.

Your lp.ppd is probably broken due to a bug in the database of
linuxprinting.org (the origin of the file). I have fixed this databse
bug, and now the PPD files there are correct.

Download

Re: [newbie] CUPS and printpro in 7.2

2000-11-15 Thread Till Kamppeter

printpro is ESP Print Pro, a commercial extension of CUPS which also
contains CUPS itself. It provides many printer drivers and graphical
frontends for administration and printing. As I know, the version coming
with Linux Mandrake is a demo which expires after one or three mounths.
In reality, you do not need ESP Print Pro with Linux Mandrake 7.2. There
are many free frontends: kups, xpp, qtcups, printerdrake, web interface
(You find them all in the menues under "Configuration"/"Printing" and
under "Applications"/"Publishing"). There are also lots of free drivers
and most of them lead to a better printing quality than the drivers of
ESP Print Pro (especially the GIMP-Print drivers). You do not gain
support of extra printers with ESP Print Pro, for Lexmark winprinters
the support by free drivers in Linux Mandrake is even better. Also for
PostScript printers you do not need ESP Print Pro, use the PPD file
delivered with the printer.

To install the CUPS updates you have to deinstall the printpro package
with "urpme printpro".

Especially the "GIMP-Print" drivers are of a very high quality. You also

of your DeskJet Portable and set up the options to the desired values.
In "kups" click on the entry of your printer with the right mouse button

When you are using a GIMP-Print driver, then it is a bug of GIMP-Print

A quick fix is using an alternative driver, try

HP LaserJet 3D, Foomatic + ljet3d (if you have a duplex unit)
   HP LaserJet Series, CUPS v1.1

Another thing to adjust the output is using the "Brightness" and "Gamma"

The installation of CUPS also includes GIMP-Print, very sophisticated
drivers for colour inkjets, especially Epson. Look when you install your
printer after you have installed CUPS, choose an entry in the printer
list with "CUPS+GIMP-print v4.0". After the installation you can call
"calibrate-gimpprint" to calibrate the colours. Instructions for the
installation of CUPS see below,

Stop LPD by

   /etc/rc.d/init.d/lpd stop

and backup your /etc/printcap file. Remove the "lpr" package and related
packages:

   rpm -e --nodeps lpr
   rpm -e --nodeps rhs-printfilters
   ...

Download the following RPM packages from a download site for Linux
Mandrake 7.2 (or copy them from the first CD of Linux Mandrake 7.2), DO
NOT download the packages from the Cooker:

   cups
   cups-drivers
   ghostscript
   ghostscript-module-X
   ghostscript-module-SVGALIB
   ghostscript-utils
   xpp
   qtcups
   samba
   samba-common
   samba-client

Install the "cups" package with

   rpm -Uvh --nodeps cups-1.1.4*.rpm

Set links for easier access to the CUPS shell commands:

   cd /usr/bin
   ln -s lpr-cups lpr
   ln -s lpq-cups lpq
   ln -s lprm-cups lprm
   cd /usr/sbin
   ln -s lpc-cups lpc

Now install all the other downloaded packages with

   rpm -Uvh package file name

Start CUPS with

   chkconfig --add cups
   service cups start

Go to http://localhost:631/ to get to the web interface for
administration of CUPS and to the documentation of CUPS.

Use the Freecom Traveller with the parallel cable or another parallel
Freecom drive. I have the traveller and it works perfectly under Linux
Mandrake 7.1 and 7.2. To set it up enter the following commands

   modprobe paride
   modprobe friq
   modprobe pcd
   modprobe pg
   modprobe ide-scsi

or better (For the I/O address, which is 0x378 in the example, run the
commands shown above and look at the messages in the end of the output
of the "dmesg" command):

   modprobe paride
   modprobe friq
   modprobe pcd drive0=0x378,0,0,-1,-1,0
   modprobe pg drive0=0x378,0,0,-1,-1,0
   modprobe ide-scsi

The second version makes the access faster. Both versions allow 2x
speed, the second 4x speed when you do not need your machine during the
CD recording (CPU load gets 80% when burning in 4x speed).

Or add the following lines in /etc/modules

 paride
 friq
 pcd drive0=0x378,0,0,-1,-1,0
 pg drive0=0x378,0,0,-1,-1,0
 ide-scsi

to get the drive active automatically at boot time. These modules are
only loaded at boot time when the drive is connected.

To get the drive's address for writing CDs (both data and audio), enter

   cdrecord --scanbus

the device to mount for reading CDs is /dev/pcd0

excellent new driver for most colour ink jets came out (GIMP-Print,

different qualities.

Note: Not all models could be tested by the authors, so there is no
warrenty whether the 930C prints really well.
