Whatever is best for you Rosemary.
I love Linux, but live on solar power in the bush using a laptop, no
serial port, with 31000 kbps Internet access. The desktop uses too much
power, but it runs Linux and connects to the net when we have a bit of
spare electrical power. But I use mainly the lappy, reworked of course,
not as out of the store, and windows XP, the modem and all else works
out of the box for that. I like windows well enough, just not their
philosophy.

I love Linux, but can't download the kernels etc,. that are required for
me to get either the PCMCIA modem working, the USB to serial connector
working or the winmodem working.

So use what you can and have and know. Experiment, I do much of my
writing and other work that doesn't require Internet connection in
Linux, and Use windows for everything else.

Computers are not about Linux, but about what you need or want to do. It
depends on the individual but nothing is better, just different. I have
come through from Red Hat, Slackware, Suse, even tried Debian for a
while and so on. They are all good, I just happen to like Mandrake. Just
can't use it on the net at the moment.

Just enjoy, don't sweat it, this is not an all or nothing situation.
Be well,

[newbie] Life............

2005-02-08 Thread Charlie
A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass
of water and asked, how heavy is this glass of water?

Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g. The lecturer replied, The
absolute weight doesn't matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it.

If I hold it for a minute, that's not a problem. If I hold it for an hour,
I'll have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you'll have to
call an ambulance. In each case, it's the same weight, but the longer I
hold it, the heavier it becomes.

He continued, And that's the way it is with stress management. If we carry
our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes
increasingly heavy, we won't be able to carry on. As with the glass of
water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again.
When we're refreshed, we can carry on with the burden.

So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don't carry
it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you're carrying now,
let them down for a moment if you can. Relax; pick them up later after
you've rested. Life is short. Enjoy it!

And then he shared some ways of dealing with the burdens of life:

Accept that some days you're the pigeon, and some days you're the statue.

Always keep your words soft and sweet, just in case you have to eat them.

Always read stuff that will make you look good if you die in the middle of
it.

Drive carefully. It's not only cars that can be recalled by their maker.

If you can't be kind, at least have the decency to be vague.

If you lend someone $20 and never see that person again, it was probably
worth it.

It may be that your sole purpose in life is simply to serve as a warning to
others.

Never buy a car you can't push.

Never put both feet in your mouth at the same time, because then you won't
have a leg to stand on.

Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance.

Since it's the early worm that gets eaten by the bird, sleep late.

The second mouse gets the cheese.

When everything's coming your way, you're in the wrong lane.

Birthdays are good for you. The more you have, the longer you live.

You may be only one person in the world, but you may also be the world to one
person.

Some mistakes are too much fun to only make once.

We could learn a lot from crayons. Some are sharp, some are pretty and some
are dull. Some have weird names, and all are different colours, but they all
have to live in the same box.

A truly happy person is one who can enjoy the scenery on a detour.

Have an awesome day and know that someone has thought about you
today..I did.

Nice answer. Not entirely accurate but nice.

 Hi BJ.

In my opinion the size of each partition are given
acord the use you intent to give and of course the
 size of youre disk. i.e.

Close enough within limits.

if you have let's say a 80 Gb Hdd. then if youre
computer is just for personal usage... the Mandrake
Linux Normal instalation will use a partition named
/ wich is the root of the operative system... (don't
get confused about the root user, that's another
thing). so into this partition can be alocated all
the other directories that the system needs like
home, var, usr tmp. But the main reason to
create partitions for this directories is to limit the
size of each one to an especific maximun size. .i.e.

Possibly not the best idea to hang system variables (/var) and /usr off the /
partition. I definitely wouldn't put /tmp there. / is the trunk of the tree
for the entire system.

 / = 20 GB
/Home = 40 GB (because is the home of each user and
have to hold the user's documents like music, imgs,
 etc.)

Home can be that large if you routinely have large files (ISOs) or large ogg
or mp3 collections or audio visual (aka movies) files stored there. If you
set a /multimedia partition of appropriate size on one of the other
drives /home doesn't need to be that big. But don't forget your e-mail and
other things. My ~.Mail directory for K-Mail is at 470 MB and growing. My
bookmark file is fairly large too.

 /swap = recomended 2x RAM Memory, let's say you have a
512 DDRAM dim, so create a 1 GB swap partition.

OK this has as many answers as there are Linux users and the only correct
answer is set a large enough swap. You define enough by the intended usage
and the available physical memory, granted. But if you're manipulating large
files, like video, you need as much as you can accommodate without
compromising anything else. The 2x or 2.5x recommendation is usually OK. Not
always needed though.

This system has 512 MB of DDR at the moment. It will have 768 MB again
tomorrow and the swap file is 800 MB. Why? 'Cause I set it that way just for
the hell of it.

 /tmp = 5 GB 's

But if you have or may have sometime in the future a dual layer DVD burner
and use it routinely that isn't enough. The burning apps use /tmp and the
dual layer disk images will be larger than that. I hate coasters, especially
at the price of *that* media. 1.5x up to 2x the size of the largest file you
may manipulate or edit is my own rule of thumb and it hasn't bitten me on the
ass yet.

and that's all ... there are no especific size or
directive that any of the prior directories must be
partitions on youre hard drive, but is easier to
mantain in case of dissasters or even back up
 operations. i.e.

If for any reason you have to reinstall youre Linux
box and you created separated partitions to hold /
and /home then you just have to format the /
partition and youre documents will be safe on the
other partition and ready to use after youre
 instalation.

 Cdrack.

No argument really. Won't always be so obvious when upgrading to the next
version of the OS but...

My own (for the moment) table on this box with the 2 drives that I have
plugged back in so far:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] nanook]$ df -h
FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/hda1 789M 122M 667M 16% /
/dev/hdb1 29G 18G 11G 64% /archive
/dev/hda10 23G 11G 13G 46% /dump
/dev/hda8 5.9G 2.2G 3.7G 38% /home
/dev/hdb5 28G 22G 6.8G 76% /store
/dev/hda9 2.0G 3.7M 2.0G 1% /tmp
/dev/hda6 3.9G 1.7G 2.3G 43% /usr
/dev/hda7 2.0G 328M 1.7G 17% /var

That table changes almost as often as the weather in Edmonton. It's just
what's here now, by morning it will be different/more complex/more and larger
drives etc.

I took a look at mozilla mail but didnt like it I'll check out
Thunderbird I must admit kmail is too unstable, on my system, to serve
well. I would prefer to address the instability but dont have a clue
 it may be somewhere else.

Something strange happened to me this morning as I was downloading mail into
Kmail. I deleted one of Lanman's mails and the Kmail desktop locked up solid,
my CPU usage went into the 100% and stayed there. But nothing was happening
in Kmail that I could see. So went into a terminal, and top showed that Kmail
was gobbling up 98% of my CPU muscle. Killed the pid and all is back to as it
should be.

Is Kmail going flaky or are Lanman's mail becoming sacred or precious?

mail into Kmail. I deleted one of Lanman's mails and the Kmail
desktop locked up solid, my CPU usage went into the 100% and stayed
there. But nothing was happening in Kmail that I could see. So went
into a terminal, and top showed that Kmail was gobbling up 98% of my
CPU muscle. Killed the pid and all is back to as it should be.

Is Kmail going flaky or are Lanman's mail becoming sacred or
 precious?

 Charlie.

Probably sacred but I haven't trashed any mail from tom and it happens
here as well but not necessarly in kmail. It just happens. Now my
kmail stops sending before it does goes bonkers.

Guys! I'm getting a nosebleed from being up on this pedestal you're
putting me on! Grin! LMAO! However, just as a precaution, you might want
to archive them in case they become valuable in the future? LOL!

But seriously, I've been noticing quite a few more posts to this list
and others regarding Kmail issues. I'm wondering if something in it was
accidentally Borked when it was added to KDE-PIM and/or Kontact, because
it used to be a rock-solid program before that happened.

Hmmm. will have to keep an eye on that.

 Lanman

For that reason didn't install Kontact, because I like KMail the way it is and
a bit longer than a year ago used Evolution. But don't like all that extra
stuff with the mail program. Have it on its own where required. KMail alone,
no Kontact here.

But this is the first time that anything like this has happened. Like the man
said when his horse died. It has never done that before. I too am watching.

No real idea here, but I have heard of something similar and it was the

I agree with your assessment of Bryan's reply. (-:

On the other hand; you've probably seen the additional editor's comments on
that article that were added since it was first run? One includes a link to
the wildlist included in the editor's:

Editor's note: unfortunately we have been made aware that this quote by Dr.
Peeling and Dr. Satchell is incorrect; the independent WildList organization
produces a monthly in the wild list of viruses. While the vast majority of
viruses in their report are Windows-based, there are still some Linux-based
viruses (listed as Other) found in the wild as well.

Link: http://www.wildlist.org/WildList/

Later the editor has this to add:

Editor's note: the above vulnerabilities, while valid, all had patches
provided by Microsoft months before they were actively exploited by malicious
code. This does not negate the fact that the vulnerabilities existed --
however there are also exploits for some Linux mail clients (Pine, mutt) that
will execute code on a system when the user views the message as well. To
bypass the security fix provided by Microsoft, the user must now take some
specific actions as explained in the link above.

In reference to the editor's first correction I see exactly one virus under
other for the latest month (June) on the list:

+W32/Bagle.X.

Since that's obviously a native Windows critter...who is this editor when he
isn't corrupting articles?

The second editorial comment, while somewhat true, is in fact exceptionally
misleading and seems to be an excerpt from the Microsoft Get the Facts PR
kit. A Win32 Linux Virus? Yeah right.

 Hello All,

but they are really vague when it comes to downloads and installations.

Can someone suggest a good book that will walk me thru a download and
installation. I may be making this harder than it is, but I have been on
MS all my life and just recently switched to Linux. It's been years since
I last did a lot of work on the keyboard(in the terminal) but I really do
like what I'm doing now in Linux.

I think you are. There are over 9,000 packages between main and contrib, plus
there's PLF and a few other spots that have Mandrake packages. What are you
looking for?

 A couple of NEWBIE questions:
 1) When you download a program such as clamav, where should you down load
to? A temp file in the usr file?

I would either:

Open Mandrake Control Centre, go to the Software Management section and if you
have remote repositories listed as sources just click the install icon and
find a blank spot in the left pane when it's loaded. Right click that empty
spot, select update media and put X's in all the remote sources and click
update. When that's done scroll through the list in whatever mode seems
easiest to you. I usually leave client's systems set to display All Packages
by Update Availability. If there updates for what you have installed you'll
have two expandable lists, addable and upgradable. The right pane will tell
you about whatever package you high light in the left pane. If you find
something, or a group of somethings, just x the little boxes and hit the
install button. The rest is handled, including being asked for permission to
install any required packages or dependencies.

Since you asked a specific question about a specific package:

Open a terminal, become super user and type:

urpmi clamav

and strike the Enter key. The exact same result as the explanation above,
dependencies etc are handled but it's all in the terminal. That MCC above, as
part of it's functions, is a front end for urpm and the drak tools.
rpmdrake (the graphical installer mentioned above) drakconnect, harddrake and
so on.

While you're there do also:

urpmi rute

and strike the Enter key. That's a book that's in PDF form. From the
information side of the graphical installer:

 Rute Users Tutorial and Exposition

Description: Rute is a beginners guide to Linux and Unix-like systems. It is
designed as a dependency consistent tutorial document. This means you can
(and should) read it from beginning to end in consecutive order. Rute also
satisfies the requirements for course notes for a Linux training course.

Are you bored out of your rock pickin' mind yet? g

 2) After extracting the files form the tar, and you do a 'make' and a
'make install' , , , , , does Linux know where to put the program files?
 Just a little confused.

The instructions for installation should be in the tar ball, yes. Depends on
the developer. What are you trying to install from a tar ball?

Any good books on this, PLEASE ADVISE.

Yes, I love sales. But I always miss them.

Either, both, which do you want, stay away from the dual layer types because
of price, and almost total lack of blank media, this is a run-on sentence
isn't it? :-)

The software is built into the backend for the burning applications now.

I've actually had decent success with the LG 4082B, Lite-On (various models
and speeds) haven't had a complaint about the Sony I installed last week yet,
anything by Plextor is great usually, if you don't mind the price tag, and as
far as I know everything by all the known brand name manufacturers will
read and write all those types now. Multi type drives are common now.

I'll stick with the ones I know for now, the ones I've listed above. A friend
just bought one yesterday, but I don't know which of the BenQs available
locally, so I'm pasting details below for the more expensive. Knowing her
that's what she ended up with. g

If it goes boom I'll post that here but I doubt it did or will. She installed
it last night and hasn't called screeching so it must be OK. Trust me, I'd
hear about it if she had trouble. She's actually running Beta1 of Mandrake
10.1 but i don't know that that would make a huge difference.

_Not_ a recommendation. I don't know the equipment yet.

BenQ DW822A DVD Rewriter Drive Retail (New Arrival)
DVD+RW Speed - 8x4x12x, DVD-RW Speed - 4x2x12x, CD Speed - 24x10x40x,
Double-Layer (+R9) Upgradeable, 8MB Buffer $ 105.83

Notice it writes almost any of the media out of the box, and is upgradeable
(firmware) when the dual layer media are finally available.

The price is in Canadian $ at a retail shop locally, so multiply by .75 to
convert to U.S.$. Close enough anyway.

Once upon a time, in a land far far away...maybe.

There are 2 libs offered when you install the (NON Mandrake supported!)
apollon package. One is the openfasttrack and the other includes gnutella
access I do believe. Lately (maybe because every box here is cooked) I
haven't been able to make the other one do anything more than waste time.

So much for testing.

If you want to use gnutella why not just try installing that other lib in
addition to the one you have, then go through the ~/.giFT/giftd.conf file and
find the line to enable the gnutella link. It may work, but it may not.

I'd be inclined to just install gtk-gnutella from the same (PLF) source (PLF)
that you found apollon should I desire to access that network.

 will run at system bootup.

I've made the same test right after system booted and firewall wasn't
running... To make everything work again I must run kmyfirewall and click
 'run firewall'.
What might be the problem 'round here?
May it be iptables (they doesn't seem to start at bootup)?

Good question, and yes to run a Firewall you need iptables running at boot.
They usually are shown as stopped after boot, but that's because they only
need to run long enough to load the rules in memory.

What people call a fire wall is actually a wrapper of some sort to pass rule
sets to iptables which passes them to NetFilter, which is a module or an
integral part of the kernel, at boot to help control the ports on your
system. Among other things.

Confused yet? (;

The wrappers are supposedly designed to make it easy to pass rules down the
chain that close and open ports so that services required for your set-up and
configuration are able to run and access what they require. Notice I said
supposedly?

You can (as super user in a terminal) use chkconfig iptables on or in the
drakxservices menu put a check mark for start at boot and then hit the start
button or I believe there's another interfering wrapper available now called
drakfw for this purpose that is intended to wave the baton for the whole
parade.

I'd do the drakxservices thing. It's the simplest graphically. If drakfw is on
the list you may want to check that as well.

Charlie
Hmmm... A passing thought. If each kernel in the disparate systems around the
world were actually an artificial neuron, and if all of those neurons are
connected by wires, fibre optics, various electromagnetic frequencies etc,;
and if the only difference between the human mind and a single celled life
form is the number of neuron linkages, have we built an electronic amoeba?
How long before the number of connections is on the close order of that of
the human brain and it wakes up?

Maybe that's really why there are firewalls, to keep the number of connections
below that critical mass.

 make it work...
May it be that kmyfirewall actually doesn't write (?) iptables' script?

It's quite possible. kmyfirewall runs only after KDE initializes so I
seriously doubt it's doing you any good. Unless of course you don't start the
network at boot. BTW if iptables is running at boot, and if you haven't
flushed the rules, the fire walling should be initialized when iptables loads
using the previous rule set. If it's not something is configured somewhere.

An IPTables based firewall configuration tool for the KDE Desktop Environment

and:

That's about all I know about the software, sorry. It's also probably all I'll
ever know about it for the simple reasons that I have a radically edited set
of rules that I use for iptables that is specific to my environment, and the
only Fire Wall I even try to use is shorewall. That's just because it's the

edited set of rules that I use for iptables that is specific to my
environment, and the only Fire Wall I even try to use is shorewall.
That's just because it's the default in Mandrake installs and if I don't
know what to do with the glitches I'm doing my customers a disservice.

I think I'm beginning to get the picture. Short question : if I'd like to
use some bit torrent client listen on certain port should this port remain
to be stealth or should I leave it open?

I do believe (HEY! somebody check this please?) the only way you need to open
anything for any bit-torrent client would be if you were the super seed and
were hosting the torrent yourself. For connections to existing torrents I
don't think you need to open anything that won't be open enough to
acknowledge the torrent. Open the app by clicking the torrent link I mean.
Responses then are restricted to that link and the running application, and
the firewall should ignore them since they are mostly ack and syn packets.

It must work something along those lines. The only way I can make apollon or
gtk-gnutella run is to open the relevant ports manually before I start. Then
I have to re-edit my rules for iptables after I shut the application down,
which I find a time consuming pain in the assets. That makes it hard to grab
family video etc without waiting for Canada Post and the U.S.P.S., which in
combination seem a lot slower than the Pony Express ever was.

But during the first 2 days of the recent torrent release of 10.1 Beta1 I
uploaded over 2 GB without touching the firewall. 60 Kbytes/second upload
speed average. I had to shut it down so my ISP wouldn't scream at me.

PS. I'm still wondering why my firestarter window keeps crashing...

I would wonder too. Are you using Firestarter because you had good results
with it somewhere else or just because? Shorewall is default in Mandrake and
seems to work in an acceptable manner most of the time. Dan's Guardian has
also received decent reviews in the past. I'm just curious.

Alright. I think I'm done with it. Now I'm using shorewall (which is easier
 to configure than I thought).

Just a short question : How did you manage to make your 113 port (auth /
ident) stealth? I've added following to the /etc/shorewall/rules :
 DROPnet fw tcp 113
 DROPfw net tcp 113

And the last one : to make shorewall for example drop packets (incomming
and outcomming) on certain port should I add two rules (like above) or can
I do it some other way?

- From man iptables:

- -L, --list [chain]
List all rules in the selected chain. If no chain is selected,
all chains are listed. As every other iptables command, it
applies to the specified table (filter is the default), so NAT
  rules get listed by
   iptables -t nat -n -L
Please note that it is often used with the -n option, in order
to avoid long reverse DNS lookups. It is legal to specify the
-Z (zero) option as well, in which case the chain(s) will be
atomically listed and zeroed. The exact output is affected by
the other arguments given. The exact rules are suppressed until
  you use
   iptables -L -v

and

- -F, --flush [chain]
Flush the selected chain (all the chains in the table if none is
given). This is equivalent to deleting all the rules one by
  one.

You don't need to be super user to read the man pages for iptables, or much of
anything else actually. Just a terminal and the time.

If you want to pass Steve Gibson's True Stealth test (the grc.com Shields Up
test) or Sygate's Security Scan or... add these rules to your basic shorewall
configuration at the end of the Rules file:
Source. Dest. Proto. Port.
DROPnet fw icmp 8
DROPfw net icmp
DROPnet fw tcp 113

Be aware that dropping everything this way may make some things not work the
way you expect them to. Dropping the pings for example (icmp) from your ISP
may cause dropped connections. Dropping the auth packets from the ISP may
cause nasty side effects as well.

Reading the first page at the linked site will probably tell you more about
the shoreline firewall, Mandrake's implementation of it, and the NetFilter
packet facility built into the kernel, than you'll ever really want to know.
The page also has links to FAQs, to examples of how to set the rules for
specific situations including stand alone systems directly connected to the
internet, etc. It all works, Just start reading and scream when you need
help. (-: Someone will tackle the questions, that's why the list is here.

Start with urpmi.removemedia -a and start over from scratch. The media

The tree structure for the mirrors has changed again and that's causing

urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://ftp.club-internet.fr/pub/linux/plf/mandrake/cooker

You could always download the entire jpackage directory contents and install

In the directory containing the rpms, I would do:

 genhdlist ./

Your Mail directory isn't hidden, normally. Nor would be the
 subdirectorys, the /spam or /MissedSpam

 The command:

 $sa-learn --mbox --spam /home/Elwyn/Mail/spam/MissedSpam/*

I beg to differ. The Mail directory for K-Mail since (I believe) 3.1 *is* a
hidden directory, while the sub-directories in it are not. No point hiding
those is there, they live in a hidden directory.

The rest of what you advised is probably accurate. I wouldn't know and don't
intend to discover since spamassassin and I have never been more than coldly
cordial to one another. I use bogofilter, far less horsepower required,
easily configured, while just as accurate.

Re: [newbie] Do I need to start over

2004-08-08 Thread Charlie Mahan
 tools in the
installer is usually as good a guide as any. Unless you intend to edit huge
files then double (or x2.5 or? you decide) whatever the recommended size is.

/usr since this is where all the packages live make it big enough. 5, 6, ? GB,
or more? You decide. 6 is what I used and I installed a load of development
packages. Roughly 3.5 GB free at the moment.

/tmp If you have a DVD drive, especially a burner, or even a CD-R/RW you'll
want this twice as big as a blank disk at a minimum. I usually pick 3 GB or
more as a baseline. cdrecord uses /tmp by default and there has to be enough
space. Also you'll likely be moving things around a lot at first so you need
the space to move the 6 GB from partition /foo to partition /bar.

/var logs, mail, spool, used for cache during package installation make it big
enough but don't accept the *huge* size the installer always wants to use.
Same size as /usr is probably about enough.

/home this you have to think about. I don't know your usage or needs. Good
luck.

As minimums, and I'd choose the JFS filesystem rather than ext3 (old tech with
a journal grafted on) or Reiser (moving target) or XFS (this ain't a
mainframe) JFS is IBM's technology and it works exceptionally well, seems
completely stable, and is fast. I'd use it for everything.

The other drive or drives, depending on how many you keep in the box, are up
to you to choose partition sizes and mount points but I'd still recommend
using JFS.

It's your system so it's all up to you but I do like the way JFS works for me.

Holler if you need advice on a proposed partition table or whatever, somebody

Hey! I resemble that remark!

The day I stop answering to newbie somebody please kill me.

You're welcome bj. I haven't helped you yet though. Here's some personal
  recommendations;

When you do the reinstall (and I know you want to so let's get that out
of the way now) set a large enough _separate /home partition_ that your
user(s) won't run out of personal space. Also since you have enough drive
space for anything you may want to do, the primary master should include
  in my opinion:

/ the root of the system where everything hangs. Choose a size that
seems comfy then reduce it. I never go more than 800 MB

Question: does the / root have to be on every drive?

No. Just the primary installation drive. Wherever you end up having that.

As minimums, and I'd choose the JFS filesystem rather than ext3 (old tech
  with a journal grafted on)
JFS is IBM's technology and it works exceptionally well, seems
completely stable, and is fast. I'd use it for everything.

As for ext 3 or JFS, will I see a difference on my GUI? I'm not a
programmer, and I don't do any development (yet), just a computer
nutHowever I do a lot of pictures and genealogy as well as my business
 stuff. Just curious.

Not unless you are so blazing fast yourself that you don't actually need a
system. JFS is just a better file system with a better journal. ext2 is a
hang over from the '60s and ext3 is just ext2 with a journal. JFS is fast and
clean, seems great at 'disaster recovery' and seems to be invisible in
operation. What more do you want? XFS is for _really big_ iron. It's from
SGI, the people that build the systems with the funny name...oh yeah Cray.

The other drive or drives, depending on how many you keep in the box, are
up to you to choose partition sizes and mount points but I'd still
  recommend using JFS.

My first two drives are Master and Slave. Does it matter if the (NEW) 250
GB drive is a Master or Slave on the cable it's on?

Sure it does bj. Where do you want the disks and in what order? lol

As long as you don't try to have 2 masters or two slaves on one channel.
You'll get a scolding for that kind of behaviour. By the installer. Or the
BIOS. Or both. g

But _not_ from me! No, never that...much. I've done it myself a couple times
over the last 10 years. Exhausted brain fart mode.

 Thanks again,
You are a very appreciated resource.

You are welcome, but I thought a resource was defined as something valuable to

It might be a suggestion to that that interface checked. Quite often,
the chair-to-keyboard interface malfunctions or does not process
instruction sets as you would normally expect. I know from daily
experience that this is one of the most undependable parts of the
equation and in troubleshooting computer issues, one has to take into
account that particular interface more often than not. I would suggest,
prior to the next troubleshooting session, to lubricate the interface
with vast quantities of any alcohol based specially bottled lubricant -
this assists the interface in processing instructions sets. Also
unplugging the interface for a few hours at a time helps as well - for
 some strange reason.

 Alt+Sysreq+S syncs all your disks
 Alt+Sysreq+B boots the system
Alt-SysReq-U force remount of all filesystems readonly

 Is this correct?

 Hello All (again),

I'm gonna chop this up to respond to specific points. Hope that doesn't mess
with anyone's mind.

If I weren't the one doing it it would probably mess with mine. g

Let me make this as straight forward and short as possible but I need to
give you Linux/Mandrake brains some history.

Oh! You asked for a Mandrake brain and got stuck with me. Damn! I'd feel
slighted if it were me.

After much research on my part about switching to Linux and then with all
the security issues with Exposer(Explorer) I was fed up and made the move.

Valid reasons but not the only ones.

However my confidence was not there so I opted for a dual boot system(bad
mistake). Here's the harddrive layout of what I had - Cdrive was 80GB and
had XP on it and I had a Ddrive of 120GB. So thinking I wanted to do a
dual boot system I went and bought a 250GB for Linux. Tried the dual boot
system and was not happy. So I tried to install Mandrake 10.0 and erase XP
but (Not thinking) it put it back on the 250 Gb drive. So I went in and
Installed Mandrake on the original Cdrive(after making copies of my data
and pics) and had Mandarke do the partitioning. Everything seems to be ok
but when I look at the Hard Disk on my desktop there is just one.

What do you mean you had Mandrake do the partitioning? See below for an
explanation of the question.

The dual boot idea wasn't necessarily a mistake. I officially dual booted
Mandrake and Windows 98 SE for almost 2 years. Suddenly one day I realized
Mandrake had run continuously for 63 days with no reboots. Windows hadn't
booted for over 12 months. I salvaged the disk space and gave away the
Windows 98 disks.

NOW- I go into system/config/mountpoints and look at the drives in there
partition state and it is strange.
hda - has ext3 and swap details
hdb - has NOTHING for details
hdc - has ext3 ans swap details

The mistake(s) you made was probably two-fold. First; when you had Mandrake
do the partitioning did you do Use Free Space or Erase Entire Disk or
Custom Partitioning or??? If custom, did you click the tabs for the other
drives and assign mount points? If not you basically told Mandrake it wasn't
allowed to touch them. Sort of an ignore order. hda has a Mandrake install
because that was the last one you did, hdc has an old Mandrake install
because that was the previous one, but, again, you didn't tell the boot
loader or the OS what to do with all those wonderful partitions. The tables
were recognized but...

Also depending on the security level you chose at install you may never see
the other disks/partitions in user land. Coming in as a self proclaimed fed
up soon to be ex Windows customer you may have gotten a bit eager since
Mandrake allows you to choose the security level. BTW Standard is higher
than XP can get without a lot of help.

Before I make another point (and there is more than one to be made) is it your
intent to *never* put Windows back on this system?

What do I need to do? Do I have to start over AGAIN?(bummer)
and a footnote, if I restart my pc I get a message that says HardDrive
Config error - sda was removed one time and then the next time is says
 it was added.

I don't see why you'd need to start over unless you aren't happy with the
partition tables you have now. There may be ways to correct any problems
without anything so drastic. You must have harddrake starting at boot
(Mandrake Control Centre, System, Services) and it's trying to guess what you
want done with all that drive space and possibly conflicting mount points,
etc. plus the fact you probably have a boot record on drive hdc and another
on hda now as well.. The simplest thing to do will depend upon the answers to
the questions above. Plus others. Talk to us, please.

Sorry for the length of this.
 Please advise

I just realized the same thing after a rare reboot.
What would I need to do to make the prog start automatically on
 reboot?
Would a cron job do it?

I suppose you could cron the start up, but why go to that trouble? If you're
using either of the main window managers couldn't you just save the session
and watch it resume after you log back in? I'm fairly positive kcron would do
it, but the folding app runs in user space so why get root involved at all?
g

I never shut K-Mail (Kontact now) or Mozilla-Thunderbird (different focus and
e-mail server/accounts) or gkrellm and a few others down. They have their
space and resume in that space when I log out and in or after a reboot and
login. Since I choose to run cooker for testing and since new kernels,
changing init-scripts etc are the norm in testing that's the easiest way for
me.

I stopped using a console (Ctrl+Alt+F1-6) for folding a while back, I just run
it in konsole on desktop 6 and leave it there with any other command line
apps that have to run unattended for long periods.

Thanks, Charlie. I wish I knew what rules I should set on... and I have
already consulted Firestarter's site. The results of the test on my
 computer at www.grc.com are below.

 Paul

I don't think I'll be much help with Firestarter Paul. I only tried it once
and I believe that was 2 or more years ago. I just add the rules I want
to /etc/shorewall/Rules and modify whatever else needs to be done in zones
and so on then as super user; shorewall restart service network start and
I'm away.

The difference between Stealthed and closed is almost as much semantics as
real. Closed is Blocked is Go Away! Interactive to the point of mildly
rude. Stealth is No Such Address, No Such Zone, Are you in the right city or
on the right planet? as in rude to the point of the passing port scanner
being logged on the inside but totally ignored from outward appearance. Does
that make things a little more clear? You are secure, you just want to be
more-so and I understand that.

If you want to learn about Firestarter you should read The Rules.

http://firestarter.sourceforge.net/manual/rules.php

The Stealth section is almost at the bottom of the page. Just take a deep
breath and try to figure what it is that you want to do here, OK. You'll be
fine.

That restart above is just because I have shorewall start at boot but not the
network. Not the first time, I don't usually allow new installs or upgrades
to connect to any network until things are tuned to my liking. Just personal
preference. From being bitten once or twice. (-;

OK after a bit of experimentation I've discovered that you can have the

will run in the background and you won't see the progress. If, like me, you

Sloppy software the uni is offering for people trying to help. If started by

I hadn't checked to see if it would work yet so it's my fault, not anything
you missed. Besides I set my Session Manager to start with a Manually Saved
Session so there may be differences there as well as the fact that I'm
running cooker.

I wonder if KDE Auto-Start would handle it. I'll do some more research when i
have a few minutes. For now you may want to use the script Paul posted.

 Hello,
Format, fill with big files (movies) until there will be no space left
and format again. If electron microscope guys (probably there are much
cheaper ways to read data from disk only twice formatted) will find
anything, it will be only data from last copyed files. If electron guys
are working for RIAA, you are in trouble because of illegal copyes of
movies :. But you need a working system to do it. There is no other way
to properly and safely clean the disk without damage.

Define working system before you make such statements please. Booting from one
of the many LiveCD disks available and using the tools available to mount,
format, change fs type and format again is possible and easy. The drives can
have previous data on them or not. It makes no difference.

You have taken this _way_ farther than anyone needed for it to go. My
*flippant* comments about electron microscopes were to illustrate that the
original question wasn't specifically asking for a format that would make any
data impossible to read because that is a difficult process and very
expensive. I was trying to steer the original poster away from the low level
format trap since it tends to damage old drives of unknown pedigree
sometimes.

The first point I made in my reply was that it's probably easier to use the
original manufacturers tools to do the job, then I threw in some smart ass
comments.

 Little math lesson:
Let say there is an empty place on a disk. That's the place, where we
write the bite we want to be there. We have a 20G disk. There are
 171798691840 empty places
 ( (((20 * 1024) * 1024) * 1024) * 8 = 171798691840 ). If we write a
file on disk, we can do it by 5MBps. That means we can fill 41943040
empty places in 1 second. If we format a 20G partition with HardDrake,
it takes about 20 seconds (I don't remember the correct time). So, if we
format a disk (partition placed on entire disk), we are touching only
838860800 empty places on the disk and 170959831040 are untouched and
containing old data. If we make two different formats (difrent
filesystems), we just decrease this number maybe by another 838860800
and that is not enough. IT IS NEED TO TOUCH EVERY SINGLE BITE ON A DISK
TO BE SURE THERE IS NOTHING LEFT!!! Touching all bites on 20G disk takes
about 68 minutes by speed 5 MBps.

What's the point? I openly stated that guarding against that type of forensic
analysis was not going to be accomplished by what I was recommending. Are you
trying to prove you are more capable and more intelligent than I?

Fine you win. Much of the world fits that description.

Counts are only guesses (I really have no glue about writing speed on a
disk, but I thing it is something about 5 MBps. I guess there are really
only 60 seconds in each minute and only 1024 bytes in every single MB

If I wanted to study math I'd enrol in University, wouldn't I? I don't have
the time. Your points are made and that's fine, but there was no reason for
them in my opinion, and this type of over technical extremism may be why so
many people despise geeks.

Is there a reason that you felt a need to demonstrate your intellectual
prowess?

Does anyone care?

What makes you think nobody understands these things but you? Or cares if you
do? Or if I do? Who in the world cares if the data is unrecoverable with
specialized tools, or through more drastic measures?

I offered a choice of methods to accomplish the original poster's question.
What did you offer? Write movies to the disk! You do know that many
countries legal systems consider that an illegal activity, do you not? It's
called illegal copying or piracy and worse. But your remarks about the
R.I.A.Ass. prove that you do. I won't recommend illegal activity.

Does using Outlook on Windows make you somebody special?

I needed not to read your belittling B.S. on a list where I and many others

unequivocally state that I didn't need some lurker popping in to tell me in a
backhand (or direct either) way that I am a mental midget and less than the

So I'm using autoclave to wipe the hard drive; is there a linux-based
tool (bootable floppy or cd) I can use to format the hd? What flavor
should I format it as? Do I need anything other than fdisk?

 Todd

Most of the manufacturers have their own utilities package for formatting and
diagnosing their drives. For example Maxtor has their Max Blast that's
available as an ISO that burns fine under Mandrake and the resulting CD
includes Dr-DOS to run on. With that tool you can even do a deep format to
totally randomize the drives but be careful with that! I found some old
drives don't take too well to this procedure, plus it's very time consuming.
I'm fairly sure all the other manufacturers have similar tools but lately I
haven't had to bother looking. So that memory has been flushed. (-:

For hard drives that I'm not terribly worried about any forensic analysis
being applied I usually just slave them to a working Linux install and format
them, then change the file system type to something other than what was there
originally and format them again. By the time the next OS is booted and
formats to load on that drive the chances of any of your data still being
susceptible to anything less than a tunnelling/scanning electron microscope
or other *very expensive* tools are probably slim. I could be wrong but
probably not.

Sure I'm paranoid, but am I paranoid _enough?_

I've also used Knoppix or PCLinuxOS (livecd distributions) to do the deed when
I was in a hurry. Lots of tools, just pick what's easiest for you.

It's specific to that Trojan.

To answer the next obvious question from the lurkers (this is the only freebie

I was rooted a couple weeks back, but since I was preparing to do a fresh

the drive and started over. The best part was the duplicate drive (USB) was
clean so I didn't lose anything.

For me it was once, maybe twice, but I'll never know for sure since that drive

Maybe before that too but I wouldn't have known since I didn't really know

I don't know if I'd call it breakin, more an exploit of the network install,
while I was doing an ftp upgrade of cooker to fix the oopsies in Alpha1. I
usually test the installer at least twice on my own system and as many
customer systems as I can get away with. I'll keep installing and testing but
I'll be a hell of a lot more careful from here on out.

That's what I get for keeping a system as my own that I built for a customer,

pull down the entire release. All three ISOs.

I suppose bit torrent has it's advantages, in my opinion primarily for
downloading and sharing new releases. But in your case, since you only need 1

Would that not save on your bandwidth use?

I think you could probably find a mirror for this yourself, but since you're

What problems could possibly arise from *not* rebooting?! This ain't no

got all kinds of crap running at all times and I leave it running while I'm
away, the worst problem being 700 e-mails waiting from the yahoos on this

AFAIK, rebooting is almost completely unnecessary with Linux unless you
 change your kernel or somethin'.

I agree with that opinion. I was unable to touch my system for as much as 3
weeks during the run up to the previous Mandrake release plus an undefined
number of days after that. Illness. Between the Mandrake lists and others I'm
subscribed to, there were over 40,000 unread messages when I got back.
Everything that I'd left running was still running and nothing untoward
happened. The swap file was still unused.

When cooker is going through a test release cycle (Alpha, Beta, Release
Candidates) I reboot a lot more than I would like, or would normally. Quite
often just so that I can test the installer. Other than that...

As for the reboot to run a new kernel, that may change in the near future too.

There's a project (can't recall the name off hand, sorry) underway to make
starting a new kerenl without a reboot possible.

As soon as I recall what the project is called I'll post it.

 vo: X11 running at 1024x768 with depth 24 and 32 bpp (:0.0 = local

Not with that graphics adapter you won't! Reduce the resolution and the
depth if you actually want anything usable.

I ran 'xvinfo' as suggested in the logs and got the following:

 X-Video Extension version 2.2
 screen #0
  no adaptors present

The video card is SiS650/651/740 GUI 2D/3D Accelerator. Mandrake
indicates the kernel module is unknown and media class is
 display_vga.

What kernel? Have you upgraded? I'd at least install the multi-media kernel
that was available in contribs, but there should have been at least one
update kernel available as well.

I also vaguely recall from customer's budget boxes with that chipset that
the SiS chipset wasn't fully supported until at least 9.2 or 10.0. I could be
wrong though since I have a list of customer systems and routinely back them
up and do a frsh install of the latest release of Mandrake.

mplayer -vo help produced a list of 22 available drivers, including
xv, x11, ggi, and so forth.

The other remaining error concerns fonts:

 font: can't open file: $HOME/.mplayer/font/font.desc
 font: can't open file: /usr/share/mplayer/font/font.desc

My system doesn't have the file /font/font.desc -- I did a search and
 it doesn't appear to exist.

There's a newer mplayer for 9.1 from PLF. See below.

I installed mplayer from a Mandrake 9.1 binary,
 mplayer-0.90-0.rc4.5.91mdk.i586.rpm.

That's the correct package for 9.1 Official. It's from the updates
directory. But there's a newer one from PLF.

Any ideas on how I can get video output from mplayer?

 Thanks,
 deedee

Try adding a plf source so you can install all of the questionable audio and
video codecs. In a terminal as super user paste this:

urpmi.addmedia plf ftp://ftp.club-internet.fr/pub/linux/plf/mandrake/10.0 with
hdlist.cz

and strike the Enter key. Then do

urpmi mplayer [Enter]

Or even:

urpmi --auto-select [Enter]

to do it all at once but be careful with that one! There are no guarantess and
I don't know what other sources you have defined for packages.

Let the list know if any of it helps? Thanks.

 Perhaps you mean '/var/cache/urpmi/rpms'?

Or perhaps not Hoyt. That's where the packages go before they're installed but
unless you use a no-clean or keep flag that directory gets emptied after all

rpms are temporarily stored until urpmi is ready to install all rpms
that have been selected by the user. Once all the rpms required are
download to this folder, urpmi then installs from that location.

What I'm actually looking for is a detailed list of the rpms which would
be currently installed on a system, not every package or rpms that was
 ever installed on a system.

Charlie suggested that I try /var/log/rpmpkgs , but that doesn't seem to
be accurate since I see rpms in that list that were recently removed
 from the system.

I'm hoping that I can build a list of the exact rpms which are currently
installed and use it as a guide for creating an archive of those exact
rpms. Once those rpms are archived, I can then burn a CD or DVD of those
rpms and take them to friends and clients and do a very fast update to
any of them, assuming that they're already running Mandrake 10.0.

urpmi *rpm would do the trick once the CD or DVD had been mounted, and
I could work on another system while that was going on. Since I have
rpms from Charles, PLF, Contribs, etc., I'd like to have the current
ones rapidly available for install on new systems as well.

Isn't there supposed to be an rpms database on my system? How does urpmi
keep track of what's installed? Hmmm, back to the drawing board!

 Lanman

That file holds the changes made to the rpm database by updating, adding, and
removing packages. I thought that's what you were after, sorry. The only
other file I can think of that might hold relevant data would be the
urpmi.log, but once again I think that one holds information all the way back
to first install.

In the /root directory there's a drakx sub directory that holds an image file
used for replaying the install. Is that the one you mean?

I'll shut up now.

 Hi All ...

This past weekend I built my first computer ... A nervewracking
experience for a newbie but I'm pleased to say nearly everything went
smoothly (and was easier than expected - esp with Mandrake 10.0 - Took a
few attempts to get WinXP loaded). The only problem now is that I can't
get the onboard network card to work with Mandrake 10.0 ... Here are some
 specs:

 Mobo: MSI K8N Neo Platinum
 Chipset: nVIDIA nForce3 250Gb
 CPU: AMD Athlon 64 3000+
LAN controller: same as chipset note (nVIDIA nForce3 250Gb controller)

When I run the Network config tool in MCC it fails to recognize the onboard
LAN at all and instead asks me to make a manual choice. But none of the
choices I tried seem to work. (I tried nvnet for example but it just
brought me back to the manual choice prompt - as did the 2 or 3 other
 listings I tried.)

I tried installing a PCI Linksys Etherfast card, too, and the config tool
found the card and went through the setup process without errors but I
still haven't got a working network connection ...

I've done this the easy way for so long that it's hard to remember the pain I
once had with Linksys cards. Set harddrake to run at boot, plug in the card
and you'll likely find you'll have a connection next time you boot to
Mandrake. Alternatively, plug in the card and insert install disk one and
Upgrade the install. At the summary screen be certain you configure
anything that hasn't already been done by the installer.

As I said, the easy way. There's a link below if you'd like to take a swing at
things another way.

Finally, I use a Linksys cable/DSL router to connect to my ADSL connection
... The router is configured properly as I'm using it to connect now thru
WinXP, and it also works with another box I have running Mandrake ...

I'm not sure what other info is needed to troubleshoot this so please let
me know what else I need to provide ...

Any and all help is appreciated ...

 Thanks in advance,
 Adam

The linked article might help. Since you have Internet access through Windows
you can download any drivers from NVidia that you may require.

http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/nforce/1.0-0256/ReleaseNotes_Linux_nForce_1.0-0256.html

That article is an old one and the driver versions aren't current but the
information is still valid.

Good luck;

Your cable results are exceptional. Cable users around here

2/3's the speed I get with DSL. They also report that's it's

I do believe you are correct Tom, in all respects. I'm uncertain why the

Exceptional usability and decent customer service is why I haven't bothered to

I can't find anything about Community on the Mandrake site, can't find the
information on Google, and can't download it just to find out. I only have
 a dial-up connection.

 Many thanks for any information.

 Cheers

 Keith

I believe Community is 10.0 + updates. I could be wrong but probably not since
the tree structure seems to be a moving target for the last 8 months.

10.1 is based on Alpha1+new packages. An install from the cooker snapshot
(Alpha1 ISOs) would in all likelihood require an immediate ftp upgrade to
the 10.1 tree. It would still be quicker (maybe) than a full FTP install of
10.1 though.

There should be another Alpha, or possibly a Beta snapshot soon anyway.

Now if I can only get apollon to work. :-|
Mandrake 10.0 is proving to be a challenge for
me thus far. It isn't nearly as stable as 9.2 was on
 my Dell.

A couple of questions Angus, since you prompted me to try to get Apollon
working here when it wouldn't since the new machine was set up.

What security level are you running? I ask because a customer system that I
assembled yesterday running level Standard connects and shares files
through Apollon.

Your connection again? I'm on Shaw High Speed Xtreme and since I'm setting
the application up and trying to make it work anything I suggest will have to
be adapted to that difference, plus any relevant differences between Mandrake
10.0 and cooker. We can do this, it just may take a bit.

It also seems like things aren't as easy to find, and
to configure. I found 9.2 was a real rock solid version
for me on my hardware. I lost my previous installation due
to a failed harddrive, and after installing a new Maxtor 40GB,
I thought it would be good to go with the latest and
greatest version of Mandrake. It has been somewhat
 of a letdown so far.

I'm not certain what the hold up is for you Angus. I've installed 10.0 on 6
machines this past week, of that number 3 were for families that have rug
rats that want to share their music with their friends. In all three cases
Apollon initialized and ran without trouble. On your system and on mine there
are difficulties. I know what may be the trouble with mine (it's cooked) but
yours should have been simple.

Since it seems as though you managed to get it installed, have you gone into
the ~/.giFT directory and clicked on giftd.conf? Or started apollon from a
terminal with the -v (verbose) flag? If you haven't done either take a look
and post the results.

I have Apollon starting at the moment but I keep getting time outs on the
nodes during connection. I may have the security wound a little tight though
so I'll have to check and open the default port (1213?) for it.

When I find something else I'll post it.

I told you could do it! Good on ya Angus.

The sticker for me was the Gnutella plugin. I compiled it w/o
trouble, but after I had installed it and set up giFT/apollon to
use it, giFTd would not start when I opened apollon. I even
tried to start giFTd manually in a terminal.no go. I got errors
having to do with the Gnutella plugin. I disabled Gnutella, voila!
 OpenFT and FastTrack work fine.

That was the last thing I had a chance to do this afternoon before being
called away to doctor a sick Windows box. Since I just got home and don't
feel much like messing with a major debug (cooker, remember?) I'll tackle
mine tomorrow.

I think I'll be doing a back-up and fresh install of cooker tomorrow. For a
new box there's a _lot_ of detritus hanging around from previous versions.

What's going on with Gnutella? Have you been able to get it to
 work for you?

Gnutella still works on the old system, or did last time I paid attention, but
that's running a fully updated PCLinuxOS installed to hard disk. Tex put all
kinds of funny gizmo's in that distribution but it's still Mandrake 9.2 with
an attitude.

 I'm on a dialup here Charlie. :-(
My provider is Aliant. It was in the plans for us to have a DSL
system called Vibe, which should have been available this
spring/summer. Unfortunately Aliant is experiencing a workers
strike that has been dragging on for months now. Hopefully
the DSL will be soon to come.

That's why I asked. I recalled (OK I cheat, I make notes for *everything*
'cause if I didn't write it down it didn't happen) that you may be switching
to ADSL. Too bad it's held up. I hope they settle soon so they don't hold you

OK, I won't.

Went to the club site at the weeke-end to re-download the iso using
bittorrent, left it running for 24 hours, with nothing happening. Just
tried again and a couple of hours later 0 download speed, 0% downloaded.

There's nobody feeding the torrent.

However the 10.1 beta I can download at 22 kb/sec.

Am I being forced to be a beta tester?

No. You'll just have to try something else. See below.

 pm

There's probably just no torrent seed available because of lack of demand.
Three methods:

1.)Using a browser, go to any mirror that holds a Mandrakelinux tree, navigate
to the official/iso directory and click the disk you need.

2.)Do you still have an original ISO for any CD1? If you you still do have one
available from _any_ version just put a copy where you want, rename it to
reflect the version you need then run the rsync command below after editing
it to reflect the location of the iso on your system. Use the torrent
directory copy, it won't save much but will be consistent. If you don't have
one it will still work, but will save bandwidth if it just has to compare and
replace.

rsync -avrt --progress
ftp.uninett.no::Mandrakelinux/official/iso/10.0/i586/Mandrakelinux10.0-Official-Download-CD1.i586.iso
 /thedirectorywiththeiso/

Believe it or not that is technically all one line other than syntax breaks.
If it's wrapped don't blame me. g

3.) Using the client of your choice; ftp download only the disk image you
need. The method in number 2 (rsync) only saves you bandwidth if there's a
file to compare to at your end.

I'd still use rsync though, but I prefer that and don't want to mess with an
ftp client at the moment.

The difference? Simple, you tried the torrent and that's all three disks and
the md5sums. This just gets you the disk you want. If I thought it would help
you I'd start a torrent for 10.0 Official but that doesn't seem as helpful as
it sounds. I'd set the ISOs as part of my shared files on OpenFT (Apollon) if
I had time to work out the kinks that cause it to refuse to connect at the
moment.

Ah, the joys of cooking!

Regards;
Charlie
P.S.; Don't you wish you hadn't dumped the ISOs after you burned them? lol

New and Improved Yahoo! Mail - 100MB free storage!

It has been sometime that I used Partition Magic 7, but certainly it gives
table errors when Diskdrake formats them, but if you want you can have it
correct them and diskdrake will either correct them again, or do nothing and
Mandrake will boot just the same.

I used partition magic 7.0 to format all the partitions on the drive, the win
98, win 2000, in my case, at the front of the drive, then all the linux
partition's after that as ext2 which is the only way that it can format linux
natives. Then install Linux O/S and have it format the partitions you're
using for those as you create and give the mount points. Then as above:-
either never look at them again with partition magic or allow it to fix the
errors it sees and all will be well.

Red Hats diskdruid complains of Mandrake's diskdrake partitioning incorrectly
as well as partition magic. But usually states that it can work within those
parameters. So I really don't know how the errors affect anything, other than
esoterically or pedantically?

Everything still runs, but it is best to have Windows at the front of the
drive in the first partition.

Charlie.

Hey Charlie, thanks for the info. I just noted what you say
to be the case indeed. I was trying to install eslrahc.com's
k3b package and rpmdrake told me it couldn't unless I inserted
cdrom4. It needed libid3_3.8_3-3.8.3-6mdk, which it wanted
cdrom4 to access. I searched a main source mirror, and guess
what?..there was the libid3 I needed. Go figure.

Amazing how that works isn't it? g It's easy to add Charles site, just click
the link in his signature, pick your version and follow his easy urpmi add
instructions. His link is:

Do the main mirrors have all of the packages from all 4 cd's?
 Regardstake care.

Since Mandrake Linux is intended to be *totally* GPL compliant yes. The only
exceptions are driver and evaluation packages on the power pack Cd's. Those
are generally binary only. There are actually more toys available from the
main and contrib sources than the 4 disk download editions or the power
packs anyway.

I have a copy of the 10.0 Official tree on one hard drive. Including updates
but excluding the ISOs it's 6.7 GB total. I just used it with the boot.iso
from the images directory to install the system I'm writing this on. Slicker
than greased owl $h!t. Fast too. g

Think about _that_ next time you wonder which has more packages. (-: Just
kidding Angus.

 PS. I recently purchased a LG HL-DT-ST GCE-8525B. :-||
Mine seems to be working OK for my purposes though.

Since the price is right for those drives I'll keep using them. I just got one
bad one out of roughly the last 30 to 40 that I've used. Mass production and
Murphy's law in operation. Still that's the first bad one I've had since they

Googling around I find this to be something to do with the way line
termination is handled between unix and Dos. I read the spiel on it and
it seems to be something to do with inserting the numbers
-13-10 in dos line termination, and simply -10- in unix code. Suffice
it to say I don't really understand it, but that is beside the point.

I had my modem setting set for CR the unix code line termination
criteria, is there a possibility that this just might cause kppp to
return No Carrier on it's first ISP cutoff and redial ?

What are the odds that having CR/LF set would cure my problem ?

Just CR works here John.

I believe that to make a CD or DVD bottable, you hae to specify a boot
image, which I believe should be that exact size of a floppy disk image, so
you can use one of the floppy images in the images directory to make the
DVD bootable. Alternatively, you could create the DVD archive, and then
use a boot floppy to get started.

Another thought, if you have the bandwidth to copy the whole dang tree
down, you might want to consider an ftp install.

Or if the OP has that much bandwidth, and enough space, what's wrong with
doing an hard drive install using the boot.iso in the images directory? That
image is about 8 MB. A CD-RW current for the version of Mandrake wanted is
all that's needed. That and knowing where the tree is on the drive.

It's the quickest and easiest method since you don't have to wait for network
slowdowns or switch disks or put up with speed bumps from optical drives.

That's the method I use for most customer's systems I assemble. I got sick of
paying for blank CD-Rs.

Two ways; copy the updates from the CD to the hard drive and add the directory
as a local source, or add the CD as a source and just keep updating it. If
the updates file gets so large that it won't fit on a single disk that could

Unbelievably weird. Almost like having to reboot to make any changes be
effective when you run Windows.

I changed the config back to oss from the xmms gui and now all is
 working except kde login.

My guess is that kde is using arts and xmms is now using oss.

KDE always uses arts for sound. But the _sound system_ (the arts daemon) uses
either ALSA or OSS drivers. I think that you, since the ALSA module is built
into the 2.6.xx kernels, may be better to have xmms use the arts plug-in so
KDE can control the priority, but switch the sound system
(menusystemconfigurationsoundSound System) to ALSA. Then there shouldn't
be any more scheduling conflicts. My KDE is starting is clear, so are the
media players for movies, mp3s, oggs, and disks.

Does it matter? Couldn't care less about login noise.

Also the shoutcast quality seems better now.
