hi... i'm really jumping in the middle of the conversation here, but just wanted to say that i also have a SiS. there is some info regarding the SiS chipsets at mandrakeuser.org, and also the SiS website does have linux drivers and information. might be worth taking a look at. Hope you don't mind the intrusion, but I couldn't help noticing you're using a SiS 630 chipset. Don't mind at all! I'm having a sod of a job setting up XFree86 3.3.6 on my laptop; essentially I've ended up with what appears to be an oversized desktop which I view through my LCD panel. I can navigate around the desktop with the mouse, effectively moving the aperture formed by the monitor over the desktop. I'd like a 1024x768 16-bit desktop, but I can't figure out where in XF86Config the glitch is. I'm using XFree86 3.3.6 with experimental acceleration, having installed the latest SiS Linux drivers. From what I can see in Mandrake Control Centre's X Windows section, everything is as it should be from the point of view of monitor, resolution, colour depth, card, etc. I don't know where to go next and I'd appreciate your thoughts if you can spare a minute. I don't know enough to solve the problem for you, but i saw somebody else post about something very similar in the last few days (might have been on the expert list). The suggestion was to change the order of the mon (?) lines in the config file for XFree. (I can't remember the name of the config file -- is it XF86Config -- I can't call it up at the moment, and I don't know the correct name for those lines but they are the lines that specify the parameters for the display at different sizes.) He suggested that the file should be edited so the lines appeared in the opposite order, i.e., if they were smallest to largest rearrange them so they are largest to smallest. (Actually he recommended they be arranged in a specific order, largest to smallest or smallest to largest, but I forget which he suggested.) If you try this and it works, let me know. Hope this helps, Randy Kramer

Re: [newbie] fstab vs mtab
hi. i know the answer to this one=) fstab is the file which tells linux which partitions to mount, where to mount them, and how to mount them during boot. this is where you make changes to the mounting procedure. mtab is what actually is mounted, how where it is mounted. *DO NOT* edit this file. you can look at it, do not edit. i have never tried editing it, but i understand it is a bad bad thing. hope that clears the mud for ya. Re: [newbie] cdrecord
hi, a comment about your original problem. just to eliminate something simple, have you tried different brands of blank CDs? see, my burner was working fine under linux, then suddenly it started trashing about 50% of the CD-Rs i tried to burn. i was trying to figure all this out and one day it occured to me that when i used my CD-RWs (4 of them, every weekend to backup) i never had a problem. i was using Memorx CDs (should have known better) so i bought a pack if Imation (for half the cost) and guess what. they work perfect. i haven't made a single coaster yet since using up the Memorx. and yes, i did shuffle between the Memorx Imation disk all in one session. it was the media, not my hardware / software. one other thing, on this win vs. linux thing. i recently installed Win98se on a different hard drive, but my same computer. the CD burner would not work. yet again -- if you think windows is "easy" to install, i don't think you've tried it lately. this last install took me over 2 hours and the burner nor sound card work at all. [newbie] the fonttastic problem
hi. i had the same problem with photopaint / fonttastic. the fonttastic RPM is in your photopaint files. there are 2 of them. a 2.0 and a 2.1 i think. for some reason yours, like mine, did not install. install the newer of the RPMs. you may have to use the overwrite files option. i did. after that you should be ok. i notice you say it's not in with your photopaint files. that is odd. where did you get photopaint? mine is the set of install files downloaded from corels web site. That was me, and I followed their links (which were good). Re: [newbie] Fontastic - Corel Photo
interesting. a few of us on the list recently went thru something similar. i could not run PhotoPaint because the fontastic software did not install, so i had to install it myself (the RPM is among the PhotoPaint RPMs). so may i ask you, are you sure it has been installed? maybe that is your problem. if it is there and you still get this message. ya got me =) but that's the first thing i would check. h try: whereis fontastic and maybe that will tell you where the config file (if there is one) is at and you could look in there see if that is the problem. i hope that helps you at least a little. Re: [newbie] Distro
having only used Mandrake i can not make valid comparisons, but i will say this -- the install is easy easy easy. in 7.0 7.2 it found all my hardware set it up correct (SCSI, printer, CD burner, sound card). in 7.1 it didn't set up the printer for so odd reason. when i got the CDs and decided to try Linux i was expecting to spend hours or days configuring a kernel and stuff like that. i was shocked when i ***read the instructions*** and saw just how easy it would be. even more shocked when ***the instructions i read*** turned out to be exactly what happened -- as opposed to those packages where the manual was written 2 years before the software and oopps there might be a few changes. also, MDK comes with a ton of apps. i am hooked for life. it's like crack. [newbie] CD burner simply stops
i think i have messed up something, 'cause i use to not have this problem, and i suspect a reinstall might fix, but let me see if anyone has a suggestion or such. here is the deal. start up XCDRoast set up everything to burn a CD start burning. green light on CD burner turns red XCDRoast generates an output and gets to the message "starting new track at sector zero" or something close to that in case i got the exact wording wrong. then the light on CD burner turns back to green, and that's it. nothing more. it just sits there. light stays green, XCDRoast shows no progress. i pretty much have to shut down and start over to get everything back up and running. if it makes it past this point, the next step is where it creats the FIFO (and no, i don't have a clue what that is) but if it gets this far, then it cooks with no problem. as i said, it didn't do this before. now i'm making coasters out of about 50% of my CDs. also, i have tried a dummy write, it worked perfect. didn't change a thing, simply unselected the dummy write option, and it crashed. any suggestions? anyone seen this before? thanks much Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [newbie] Red Hat to Mandrake
hi, thought i'd toss out an answer to this -- with a warning -- i have never done this. =) remember what free advice is worth. anyhowz, i recall some time ago on this very list someone wrote that they did exactly that. they had Red Hat (i don't recall the version however) on their box. they put in the Mandrake CD (v7.0 or 7.1) and used the update option and it worked. however, i'm thinking this might not work with 7.2. many folks have had problems going for 7.0 or 7.1 to 7.2 with the update install, because the 7.2 version changed the directories in which some files are located. the general warning issued on this list is when installing 7.2 format and start from there, do not try to update. this is not to say some people here have not used the update feature and had it work just fine. they have. so, my newbeish thought would be for you to format and do a fresh install. if i'm way off base here hopefully someone will correct me. "Thio Yu Jin" [EMAIL PROTECTED] 10:43:01 AM 1/20/01 Why is Enlightenment so much better than KDE or Gnome? Jin *haha* now you are starting a war. =) just kidding. i like E because it doesn't look like windows... no icons on the desktop. no menu bar at the bottom. i like the pagers as they make it easy to jump from one desktop to another. the eyecandy is great... i mean really really nice. sometimes i just turn off all the lights and look at the screen. =) it is very easy to customize, and tho some of the things are a bit difficult to figure out, once you get the hang of it cutomizing the menus, desktop, blah blah blah is really easy. it also comes with some nice themes, and you can download many more. it really is all just a matter of personal taste, and i would rather have a "slicker" interface that is a bit slower. i'm not in that much of a hurry. =) also, the E "team" (they are more like leaderless bandits) is working on Enlightenment 17. my understanding is they are completely recoding much of it, and expect the whole thing to be much faster, smoother, even easier to configure and there has been talk of an integreated file manager (don't quote me on the last one). so i think things will be much much better. also, Eterm is great. hey Civilme Mandrake, can we have Eterm 9.1 in the next release? i use it it's perfectly stable as far as i can tell. that would be the bomb. remember, to say E is "better" than X, Y or Z all depends on exactly what you want to do. for many users Blackbox or KDE or Gome is "better". this is what i like about the mandrake package. they give you a whole bunch of WM to play with. Adrian, For egotistical reasons I am tempted to agree with you, but I think in the real world that's a poor way to look at the problems here. Everyone had to learn somehow, but just because you and I learned in the school of hard knocks doesn't mean everyone has to. There is no reason to need an advanced degree in comp sci to use a computer. If you want the computer to be a tool it has to be usable by those that need it. If you want it to be an ego trip for the cognoscenti then what you say is true. The Drake tools are very good and easy to use for those of us with more than a smattering of technical knowledge. But without better documentation they are a huge barrier for the average user. Some of the problems I see with Mandrake are trying to use the server install instead of workstation, (I wiped out 3 gigs of webpages, graphics files, and programs on ide2) probably 20 installs before I figured out a reasonable partitioning scheme, multiple development programs an libraries which just take space and are not usable for most users, multiple programs which are extraneous for the majority of users (i.e. text editors, mail programs, web tools, system monitors, and sound/video multimedia programs). I would like to see a documentation link on the splash screen as you open the installation program. Ideally it could be in pdf format and open a pdf client that would give simple steps to the installation process. This could also define terms and give examples of what is necessary for a minimum install, as well as provide warnings about terminal (as in kill your computer) problems. Some examples could be: 1) install linux prior to WIN2K, 2) do not use 'server' installation on a dual boot computer, (or one with data you would like to keep), 3) known unreconcilable hardware problems (windmodems, incompatible peripherals) 4) The steps necessary to create a dual boot machine. I did a portion of my Master's work on usability problems. Much of it based on my long, difficult, and destructive attempts at learning linux. Fortunately I have several computers and don't have to take the chance at destroying my workstation to experiment, most of the computing population doesn't have that advantage. Linux isn't easy but it will have to become easier if it is to become a standard in the business community, and amongst the computing public. Most people don't want to experiment, they would like to use their computer to surf the web, write the odd letter, track their checkbook, and keep records. There is no reason to make things difficult (or impossible) for Joe User. The past 20 years is littered with good ideas, hardware and software that didn't take that unnecessary difficulty into account -- Jim -- James Mellema, MA CRNA -- Linux User # 71650 ICQ #19685870

quote from the artical: The week before Christmas, CNET News.com editor Todd Volz blasted most of the major commercial distributions, including Mandrakesoft, for shipping bloated product. Re: [newbie] really basic questions
howdy. if you have used unix for anything then you alread know 300% more than i knew when i first tried linux. remember, if you aren't root, you can't really mess up anything too much (and even if you do you can reinstall which i think installing linux is much easier than windows anyhow and i know many will disagree with me on that) but anyhowz just get on it and play. =) i'm getting pretty good with this os, and i discover new things all the time. it's fun, it's loaded with variety, it can do amazing things, and it's actually more intuitive than most people seem to think. case in point, other day i'm sitting there at an Eterm window in a directory with a wave file and i was thinking "surely linux has a way to play a wav file from a command prompt" so i just guess and typed "play music.wav" and hey, it started playing. now how hard is that? =) as has been said, there are loads of documentation right there on your machine, and don't forget to go to the library and look for linux books. as to concentrating your learning curve... i guess it all depends on what you want to do. i usually start by using a GUI program (example X CD Roast) to get something done, but then i'm also playing with the cdrecord command here and there because eventually i want to be able to do things from the command line if i want. if you system is working fine, don't worry about tuning it yet. reward yourself by playing with it having fun. the tweaking will come naturally. Re: [newbie] cdrom bootdisk?
that's interesting as i was thinking of the same thing. see, i have a "live CD" of Red Hat (version 3.something) which i can boot up from the CD. i know that in XCDRoast there is an option to make a CD bootable. so i was thinking that i would figure out which files directories i must have to run linux, then burn those to the CD make it bootable. in theory i can get a live file system. i expect however there might be problems with some configuration files, or the boot up or something. but i can burn those bridges when i get to them. this will be as much a learning tool for me as something actually practical useable. what would really be fun would be to add X with very general config files that would work on most any system and Enlightenment so that i could boot this up on other peoples system and show off. =) but that is another bridge even further down the road. but sure, there is no reason you can't do this. as someone said in reply to you, it's rather a waste of a CD -- so you may as well add some other stuff to it then it might become a good recovery tool or portable linux distrabution (which is what i am hoping to create). yea, then i could use linux at work oh. IS people having fits and convulstions when they see it... oh i could tell them i formatted the drive and installed Linux oh they would be foaming at the mouth oh i love it. the other Mr. Smith Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED] "Mr. Smith" [EMAIL PROTECTED] 9:10:21 AM 12/20/00 I would like to know if it is possible (I am pretty sure it is) to create a bootdisk on a cd. Holly said the below: BTW, for the person in the thread who had the very large swap space -- 2GB I think? I'm not deep enough into Linux to say for sure, but even in the Windoze world there was a point at which increasing swap space actually brought a negative return. I wonder if you sized that down to 128MB or less if you might actually see BETTER performance? Re: [newbie] Spaces in names
exactly. this is what i have read. i have only used it a few times myself, such as cd "all of my writing" to change to my directory called 'all of my writing' as i mentioned, i'm renaming my directories so it's easier to navagate, but as to file names... not really. to many of those. so i believe that something such as gimp "picture of cute girl.jpg" would also work can't say i have actually tried this however. but it seems that i read someplace that this works with most command line funtions in linux. hi Michael; i'm still learning linux, but from what i understand Mandrake is based on the Red Hat system and that most red hat rpms will work for mandrake. however, it has also been said on this list that it is best to use mandrake rpms when you can. so i would suggest look for the mandrake version first. if you can only find the red hat version, then simply do a test install, checking for dependanceies and all that stuff. if you get no errors from the test then that would lead me to believe it will work fine. if i'm wrong about anything here hopefully someone will let us both know. =) have a better one Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Michael [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2:36:25 PM 12/12/00 I'm starting to learn PHP3 and Postgres and the book I just got has a CD in it that says it has everything I need to install PHP and postgres under RedHat Linux. Re: [newbie] Upgrading 7.1 to 7.2
hi there. i just upgraded 7.1 to 7.2 and asked the same question as you on this list. the consensus seems to be that it is better to do a fresh install of 7.2, not an upgrade. there do seem to be quite a few differences between the two. 7.2 does of course have the "upgrade" option in the install program. but i was warned this could cause lots of headache. do you have a seperate /home partition? if not, i suggest you create one now. having /home (and in my case /backup and /home/user/work) on seperate partitions is great. when i did the fresh install my software found the preferences from 7.1 and i didn't have to reconfigure anything. that was 10 out of 10 for coolness. so -- yes, you can upgrade -- but a fresh install seems to be the better option. i did have some problems with my install, and yes i am a bit agitated=) but in all fairness my system is working, all hardware works (save the winmodem of course) and all the little bugs are things i can sort out with some work. Re: Re: [newbie] InstallShield
hey Mark Groovyness. Glad it didn't turn into total disaster. on the subject of hardware -- since going with linux i've been learning more about hardware. i wasn't really keep up with that side of things. when i bought the compaq box i have now i had no idea there was such a thing as a "winmodem". when i found out just what i had occupying space on com1 i was just stunned. good thing i found out about 'winprinters' before i dropped some cash on that. me thinks low quality hardware is probably the source of much pain in the linux community. even to a newbie like me linux seems pretty easy to get along with if it has a nice home. laterz Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2:12:32 PM 12/7/00 Hi Adrian, I found a pleasant surprise when I started loading Linux back onto my workstation today. I had 7.2 running briefly, but because the hardware on that computer is SO incompatible with Mandrake 7.2 a LOT of things were either broken or would not work at all no matter what. As I was looking around a hard drive that I was sure was wiped out, Lo and behold ALL my data files and EVERYTHING that was on the /home partition was still there. I lost literally everything on the windows side of the hard drive, but all my data on the linux side survived. :) that was a VERY pleasant sight for my very sore eyes indeed! At present I am busily re-installing Mandrake 7.1 back onto this workstation. Had that one on there before running very well, except for Star Office, but all in all Mdk 7.1 works well on this machine. It appears that most of the troubles I've had at least not withstanding the mess that the installer caused yesterday, are hardware related due to the fact that the now defunct Quantex company used very low standard quality hardware in their PC's, that is almost so bad that I barely got Windows installed and running this morning. Re: [newbie] HD Partition question
hi Jacqueline; how comfortable are you with messing with your computer? i can tell you one way to do this, tho there might be easer ways. 1st -- have you backed up your windows system (or have the CDs to reinstall) on the off chance you kill windows? =) but yes, you can put linux on your E drive, leave win on your C duel boot, not a problem. i would use the expert install. when it gets to the point where you have to select the partitions to mount the file system it will open diskdrake which will show your drive and you will see 2 fat partitions. select the "E" partition (make darn sure you select the right one -- look at the size of each one) then you can change the type of drive -- it will be fat32, you want to change it to ext2 -- then you can format that drive -- then you can tell the install program to mount your file system there. from diskdrake you can also break that partition into smaller partitions if you want to mount linux on seperate partitions. diskdrake is pretty straight forward (i figured it out) just be sure you read everything carefully before you click on anything =) i hope this makes sense helps you out Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED] "Jacqueline Michell" [EMAIL PROTECTED] 12:32:27 PM 11/24/00 I*m very sorry if this is a dumb question. If so, can one make sure that both OS have about equal HD space? Any help will be greatly appreciated . . . Jacqueline Michell
Re: [newbie] Two Questions for thought
i can't say much about the printer problem, mine doesn't work either =) as to the sound i think you have to use sndconfig. i don't think there is any other way. also make sure your window manager isn't involved. i have seen some situations on this list where it was simply that the volume was turnned down in KDE and in my case, i use Enlightenment, and i had no sound until i ran esd. so run sndconfig -- and they say you should not do it under X and i think you have to be root. i don't remember now as i did mine so long ago =) hope that helps Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Jay [EMAIL PROTECTED] 3:09:35 PM 11/24/00 I have two problems that need addressing. The first one: I have a SoundBlaster 16PCI Sound Card that I can't get configured properly, therefore no sound. What is the easiest and most effective way to configure it for sound. Please leave no path unexplored. The second one: I bought a HP 648C Deskjet printer and I can't get that mofo working as well! I already tried the DrakeConf Printer setup to no avail. What are my options to set up my printer. It is a hassle to type out papers and have to get up early and go to class to print them out. Not to mention the problems that I have transferring the StarOffice format to .doc on occasions, i.e. text formatting, widows and orphans, etc.. I would greatly appreciate any help you can give me. I already know about sndconfig and printtool, but didn't use them yet. Are they more effective than other ways, or are other ways better? -- Jay "May the sound of happy music, And the lilt of Irish laughter, fill your heart with gladness, that stays forever after." Re: [newbie] partition info destruction
t a drive? best case, i think your data may still be there on the drive, physically there... but the partition table is gone. can it be repaired? i'm not too sure. wish i had better news for you but there are lots of other folks here who are up on windows, so don't give up hope quite yet. again, my best idea right now -- use diskdrake to see what it says. if you have a big white chunck that says "free space" i bet that use to be your windows partition. Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED] [EMAIL PROTECTED] 11:34:31 AM 11/24/00 Ok, this is what happened... I was running Windows, and bought Linux-Mandrake 7.2. I installed it with the custom option, as i had already installed 7.1 a couple of times. when it got to the point to decide how to install it on my harddrive, i chose the option "install to free space on Windows", which i thought would create the necessary partitions, and 'steal' the space from windows. Beforehand i had defragmented windows. when i clicked into the "install to free space on Windows" option, the system froze.(AI could move the mouse, but the system would not respond to the mouse or the keyboard navigation of the options... I proceeded to press ctrlaltdel. the system rebooted, but instead of booting normally it asked for me to enter the location of my command.com file, i entred c:\windows\command.com but to no avail. When i booted with my win 98 boot disc it told me that it had not found a valid FAT16 or FAT32 partition on my drive, and that i should use fdisk to make one. i used fdisk and it told me that there was the windows partition (i could tell because of the size), but that it was a non-DOS partition. I tried using norton disc doctor, but that didn't help because it could not see a drive to examine... I desperately need help, because i've got important stuff on the windows partition... I started Lnx-mdk 7.2 setup again, just to see what the partitions looked like etc. but the 'only' option of how to install was to use all the space (ie. no option to use the space that was not being used by windows - win does not use all the space on my harddrive; the rest is empty) I know this is not exactly a linux question, but my guess is that some of you will also know something about windows. are you stupid? what does accessing the net have to do with using a word processor? you must be young. if you wish to engage in flame war email me privately do not waste bandwidth. I wonder whether a review from someone who, by his own admission (in the review), cannot access the Internet from Linux is worth much. I have my own troubles with linux, and I would not presume to present a review of serious software unless I had full control of the system on which it runs. (To the extent that the system allows control, of course.) It would be like me running a review of some program on a MAC, a machine I dislike because of its "I know better than you" attitude, like Windows. I know nothing about actually working on the MAC. You seem to know fairly little of actually working in LINUX. I would suggest that you save your reviews until you are competent in the environment, and then I will welcome them. --dm
Re: [newbie] WINE with Office 97
i could be wrong (yea right *haha*) but i think you have to install Office on a windoze drive, under windoze. WINE simply lets you run a Win program under Linux. but serious... i think that's it, but i really could be wrong =) Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: [newbie] word processors and my Applix review at last
*haha* i agree with you on this one. i'm a writer a good word processor is pretty important to me. so far this has been my only disappointment with the world of Linux. i also agree with your assesments below. you i are probably the only 2 people here who don't have a shrine in the honor of StarOffice. (that's a joke, for those of you who need to be told so) i mean SO is ok, considering it's free. but is that really saying much? granted, Linux is "free" and it rocks, but just because it's free doesn't make it good, any more than paying money for it makes it good. i have just recently tried out ApplixOffice and posted a brief review and some screen shots on my web site. Applix claims (i can't really say for sure it is or isn't) a Linux native program, not something ported. i found it mostly useable... a few odd things notes for the wish list, but so far it is the best of what i have seen. the review is at: http://ontheflyphotography.1stcyberhost.com/linux04.htm later dayz.. Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED] "pablito" [EMAIL PROTECTED] 1:17:52 PM 11/23/00 Of course I meant REAL word processors and the LINUX crowd, not these commercial enterprises trying to hurriedly port their wares to Linux. Kword would qualify as a Real word processor from the Linux crowd if it would save in some of the normal wp formats and if a few bugs were straightened out. I really like Kword. But that's kind of new, isn't it? oh well, maybe in a few more months. WP8 was a semi-commercial program and absolutely stinkingly pukingly awful, still using the ancient PTR files from WP5.1 days with those hard-coded font selections. I remember hand-editing those in Dos to try to get WP5.1 to use downloadable fonts. think it was just a quick and dirty thing Corel put out. I guess that's why they switched their stategy to Wine. Star Office is a big disappointment and is not the Linux crowd, as far as I'm concerned. Again, it's the hard coded font selections, unless there is some way to install more fonts. That kind of spoils a wp for me, since I think times is too narrow and hard to read. AbiWord: Not as nice as Kword and still those hard coded fonts. Most of the Linux text editors aren't particular about fonts. What libraries are these guys using? Klyx: I haven't tried that. That's the graphical front end to tetex, right? Okay I'll take a look at that, but tetex sounded like a real ancient thing from pre-X days. [newbie] upgrade question
ok, as i get ready to order some 7.2 disk another question comes to mind. i've decided to go ahead with a fresh install. i have the following partitions / /home /usr /var /swap of course i do not format /home -- but i do tell the install program to mount /home on that partition right? *duh* i do format / and /usr correct? then reinstall everything that i put on that is not part of mandrake (and the theory is my settings are contained on /home so will still be there) right? it can't hurt to format /swap but what about /var? i don't have any email or anything there that i need to keep, so i could format that also right? but if i do have things there in the future that i need to keep then i can just tell the install program to mount /var on that partition and it will all be groovy, yes? thanks much Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
[newbie] Enlightenment / sound question
for anyone here using Enlightenment my sound card is working -- if i start a KDE session it works fine but under E i get nothing. i found out that some E themes don't support sound. I am using Absolute E, and have tried some of the other themes. same result. when i try to turn on the sound i get the message: audio was enabled for E but there was an error communicating with the audio server (Esound). audio will now be disabled. i searched my computer for a file called Esound but didn't find anything. am i missing a program or library? thanks Adrian Smith 'de telepone dude Telecom Dept. x 7042 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
