I have an AMD K6 (1.4 GHz, 512 MB memory) that is definitely older than 4
years. It has had SuSE (or whatever they were called at the time) 9.1, 9.3,
10.1, 10.2 and currently has openSUSE 10.3 on it.

This is a desktop machine (no real server functions) but as a desktop my
experience has been that each release *seems* faster than the previous one.
(Most likely this is due to improvements in KDE specifically).

Hi Clayton,

Was all this working before your crash?

In reading your posts (this one and others), I've not seen any scenario since
the crash where disks on SATA ports 3 and 4 work with 10.3, at best they are
recognized by the bios. Have you eliminated the possibility of any hardware
problems with those two ports?

I would suggest booting your Scenario 1 but with the two disks attached to
SATA 3 and 4 (instead of 1 and 2). (You might have to
adjust /boot/grub/device.map temporarily.) Perhaps boot just one disk at a
time? Maybe boot with a live CD to see if there is something specific to
10.3?

Not sure what else to suggest. Best of luck.

[opensuse] Update Problems - libxml2

2008-01-23 Thread Don Raboud
Hi,

Earlier today I was notified of a update (10.2, x86_64).

The update was for libxml2 to version 2.6.26-28. This is a needed security
update according to zypper. However the package is locked and can't be
updated in this manner.

The problem is that I currently have version 2.6.26-27 from Packman. (I don't
really know why that is. I install the usual multimedia stuff from there
plus an occasional "update all in this list" in YOU on the Packman
repository.)

My understanding is that by installing such packages from packman (or other
such repos) security updates for those packages would be up to me. That
doesn't seem to be what is happening here.

So... why is a SUSE update trying to update a package from Packman? Is this
normal or is something wrong on my end?

I generally try to keep up with all of the security updates, but I am hesitant
to accept this one since I don't really know what the differences are in the
Packman repository with this particular package and what might break as a
result.

I tried "rpm -q --whatrequires libxml2", but the only Packman package that
showed up there was libxml2-devel-2.6.26-27.pm.1 :-(

Any help/insight would be appreciated.

Right click on the xterm title bar, select Advanced->special window settings->

and you can specify things like maximized, no window borders, etc. Not sure
about setting up both max and min for the same application though.

Among the options one can set in Acrobat reader is to specify a proxy which I
usually set to 127.0.0.1 to avoid things like this. (I am not paranoid, just
don't like the very idea.) Of course, being closed source one has no idea if
acrobat reader honors these settings or not.

The kdegraphics3 package has the bits which generate preview images in

This is true if to copy partition, but dd can copy entire disks as well. No
pre-partitioning required in that case.

I recently backed up an entire disk with three partitions (including one
encrypted) to a new disk (same model) without partitioning. Something along

dd if=/dev/ of=/dev/ bs=8M

Do you have Klipper running?

I've seen very similar behavior with some of the apps you mentioned.
Specifically cutting a graphic out of Acrobat and attempting to paste into
openoffice impress. Often nothing would get pasted or else something that
was put in the clipboard previously would get inserted. Whenever this
happened I found that if I clear the clipboard contents (using Klipper), and
then redo the copy and paste it will generally work. Annoying to have to do,
but works repeatably.

I have recently turned off Klipper and the behavior seems much better, but
that is based on very limited testing.

I really do not know. cdrom.ko is a kernel module which (I assume) is needed
to access the cdrom. It doesn't seem to be loaded in the OP's (and your)
case otherwise why would hwinfo try to load the module (and subsequently fail
when run as a sub-root user).

The may be a bug about this already since it doesn't appear to be an isolated
event. Maybe a search on the web for the error messages in hwinfo would lead
to something further.

Failing that, if/when the cd doesn't work again, I would suggest checking the
loaded kernel modules to see if cdrom is still loaded.

lsmod | grep cdrom

If it doesn't show up, have a look at the boot log to see if any indication is
given for why it wasn't loaded. Try loading the module as root

modprobe cdrom

and see if that helps. Actually, why not list the kernel modules loaded when
everything *is* working and then again when the cdrom doesn't work. Maybe
the differences will provide a hint.

Failing all else, maybe add cdrom to the modules to be loaded on boot in YaST.
I don't *think* this will hurt anything .

I know you've looked in YaST, but what is the output from

/usr/sbin/hwinfo | grep cdrom

Is it really blank?

If so, does the CD/DVD drive work? It is possible that drive died, or maybe a

What is the vga= parameter in your grub menu, (/boot/grub/menu.lst).
Try putting vga=normal there and see if you get the startup messages.

Alternatively, what happens if boot in failsafe mode, any difference?

Since the md5sum of the iso checked out, it seems like the download went OK,
although the burning process might not have. Rather than burn a new disk,
there is (was?) an option during the installation to check the installation
media. Did you try this?

From the compiz-fusion icon in the system tray (if you can see it) try
temporarily selecting kwin as the window manager, then switch back to compiz.

I've managed to get back window decorations on occasion using this method.

That is the same error I get when the server doesn't exist.

Can you ping the server in question? If so, try noting its ip address and
using that instead.

smb:///InfoSys/SOFTWARE/APPLICATIONS/create

Yes. Each of your two interfaces has the same mask (the "Mask:255.255.255.0"
bit), and because of this they are on different networks.

eth0 can communicate with all machines with addresses 192.168.1.*.
eth1 can communicate with all machines with addresses 192.168.2.*.

To have communication between them (or with other networks), you need to have
routing information set up appropriately.

There is a number of line of output. To see them all try

Overall I have not found many problems with ASUS boards, but one thing I often
have problems with (using these boards) is the sensors package.

On an older board the package installed but the results were not useful.
Apparently (information gathered from a web search) ASUS would not provide
the appropriate hardware information to the developers at the time.
(Sorry for lack of detail here, but I no longer have this board. It had an AMD
K6 processor though, to give an idea of the timeline.)

Several months ago I updated to a newer AMD Athlon 64 X2 system with an ASUS
M2N-E mothboard. I did finally get sensors to work, and now I have exactly
two items listed - temperatures for CPU0 and CPU1 - nothing more. The
temperatures themselves seem reasonable, but no other information is
reported.

Of course this may all be down to me doing something wrong (a distinct
possibility) or the fact that this is a relatively new (~1 year old?)
motherboard.

I have had no^H^H relatively few problem with the sensors package on any of
the Intel boards I have used. Lots of information is available (fan speeds,
voltages, memory usage, etc.)

Yes. This has happened to me previously.

What was happening in my case was that a particular message seemed to cause
KMail grief and leads to that error. Only ever happened with POP accounts.
I was not able to retrieve any messages in this situation.

Other clients (like Thunderbird), or a webmail interface had no problems with
the "problem" message. What I ended up doing was using Thunderbird to go
through the new mail, delete those I didn't want, remark all of the new mail
as unread and be sure to leave a copy on the server. After that KMail worked
OK. Might be easier with webmail interface though.

How exactly are you trying to connect to the printer from the windows machine?
By typing "192.168.0.2:631" in a browser? I don't know if that would work.

In the add printer dialog in windows, you select network printer and at some
point you can select a specific url. If the printer queue name on
192.168.0.2 is "printer_name" then the appropriate url would be

http://192.168.0.2:/631/printers/printer_name

If you've already done this then never mind... (I don't remember the beginning
of the thread...)

By way of an example, this is the top output from my desktop machine currently
with 2G of ram (and not to much open right now).

Mem: 2075524k total, 1695896k used, 379628k free, 520148k buffers
Swap: 3148732k total, 128k used, 3148604k free, 519956k cached

There is:

379628k free memory
520148k for disk buffers
519956k currently cached

for a total of about 1.4G of ram "available if required" without touching
swap.

The output of free contains the line

-/+ buffers/cache: 6559041419620

The last bit says the same thing, that about 0.6G is currently actually used
and that 1.4G is "available". (Note that free defaults to displaying in
kilobytes).

At least that is my understanding...

When you boot openSUSE (using GRUB I assume) there is a place to enter boot
options. If you enter "init=/bin/bash" (without the quotes) that will boot
and get you a shell with root permissions.

Here just issue the command "passwd" to set the root password to whatever you
like.

After that reboot normally and you should be able to log in as root.

[opensuse] Sorting contacts in KAddressbook..

2007-09-13 Thread Don Raboud
Hello,

I have created a new address book within Kontact and filled it in with a list
of student names. I've tried to sort the list based on Reverse Name ( ).

In looking over the list I realized that it was not in the same order as the
official class lists. Looking into this further, what I have found is that
the sorting seems to be based on the entire string +
at once rather than on first and then as a secondary
criterion.

For example, (using made up names...)

The official list might have
...
Ma, Steven
Martinez, Rick
Mather, Thomas
...

but KAddresbook shows this as
...
Martinez, Rick
Ma, Steven
Mather, Thomas
...

based on the first three letters Mar, MaS, Mat even though MaS comes from
Ma, S(teven)

This is very reproducible as I can "move" Steven around in the list
by "changing" his First Name :-)

This behavior is wrong IMHO, but I do not know if this is a bug or if there is
a setting somewhere that controls this that I have not been able to find.

Anyone else seeing this?
I'm using 10.2, fully patched.

Not yet :-)

As I mentioned in a previous post, k3b is working well for what want to do,
but I'll look at grip as well.

What package manager are you trying to use?

If YaST, I'm *guessing* you might need to add "RPMS" to the end.

I have for example (under 10.2):

I'm not sure about this though. If you check the openSUSE web page

the link for 10.1 is as you have shown, but the subdirectory under that
link, "RPMS", is the one which contains the repodata directory, which I
believe is the important part.

Then again, I don't really know all that much about this stuff. What I have
shown seems to work here though (in 10.2).

I hope this helps.

Sorry to reply to my own post, but after years of using it, I just realized
that k3b is capable of ripping CDs, and incorporates the CDDB information.
This is exactly what I was looking for (and it was right in front of me the

[opensuse] Can't access CDDB Data - sometimes...

2007-08-19 Thread Don Raboud
Hi all,

I am trying to rip audio CD's to flac using konqueror's audiocd:/ feature.
When doing so, there is no CDDB information shown, just Track01, Track02, etc.
This used to work in 9.3 or 10.1 (I forget which I used to do this before) but
now I only have 10.2 running here.

On one of my computers Amarok CAN access the CDDB information, so it seems to
be available (Amarok is currently set to access freedb.freedb.org using port
8880). On the other Amarok can't access the information, but I that is a
problem to be solved later).

Does anyone here know how to get konqueror to access this CDDB information?
Alternatively, is there a better/alternate way to do this ripping which will
incorporate the CDDB information.

Thanks.

Hi Carlos,

At work various pdf forms are available and I've been able to save many of
them using the version of acrobat that comes with openSUSE 10.2 (+ whatever
updates have come out). These are simple forms with dates, text fields,
number fields, etc. Not all forms are like that of course, but there ARE
some that work.

Unfortunately, I can't help you with getting this to work, other than to let
you know that it is possible.

[opensuse] Printing Problems through D-Link Router

2007-08-08 Thread Don Raboud
Hi all,

I recently got a new computer (openSUSE 10.2, x86_64, fully patched) which
does not have a parallel port. However I have an old HP Laserjet 4M (old, but
works well) which only has a parallel port connection. This is at home, and
I have a small D-Link DI-704P router which has a built in parallel port for
sharing a printer - exactly what I would like to do here.

After a rather frustrating bit of time I sort of have the printer working. I
set it up as a remote LPD server (router address 192.168.0.1) with
queue "lp". This "sort of" works in that the test pages (from CUPS and YaST)
print just fine, but the document I wanted to print wouldn't.

By trial and error I discovered that some documents will print, however some
won't. For example, kwrite will print a text file (/etc/fstab for example)
just fine, and postscript and pdf files generated (through CUPS) from this
file using kwrite also print fine (from acrobat for example). However,
openoffice writer with a simple text file will not print (the lights on the
printer blink for a few seconds but then stop and no paper comes out).
Similarly a pdf generated in openoffice writer from a simple text file does
not print. Other pdf files (generated in Kile for example) seem to print OK.

So, not all postscript of pdf files are created equally. However, I know very
little about the format of postscript and pdf files and how these differences
could affect essentially just the data passing through the router. (These
files print just fine with this printer on another machine with a parallel
port so I know the printer works.) I've looked at the logs in the router and
the only messages related to printing are pairs of messages like

Printing jobs started from
Printing job finished

with no indications of any errors. I checked the D-Link web site and there
are no firmware upgrade for this router, and all of the support seems to be
windows based.

I've tried several different ppd files for this printer (though not all) and
they each show the same behavior. I'm not sure what else to try and am
looking for some suggestions (wild guesses also accepted).

I hope someone here can shed some light on this for me.

(I could always get a pci card with a parallel port I suppose, so if I don't
get this to work that is probably what I will do, but of course I would like
to figure this out. )

As I recall that was because a command (installation_source or something
similar I think it was called) got replaced around 10.0 or 10.1, but
Konqueror "Install With YaST" still tried to use it, so of course it failed.

The command createrepo can be used to make a directory of downloaded rpms
visible to YaST as an installation source. I think this can be done through
Yast -> Installation Sources as well. After that you should be able to
install using konqueror.

Createrepo was not installed by default however, and the command needed to be
run everytime an rpm package was added to or removed from the directory.

From the command line 'rug sl' should tell you what repository the catalog
number corresponds to. (Rug is the command line interface to zmd.)

I don't think that is possible at present (without removing the entire

[opensuse] YaST partitioner question - mounted disks

2007-03-15 Thread Don Raboud
Hi,

When I fire up YaST -> System -> Partitioner, there is a warning that pops up,
essentially saying, among other things,

NEVER (my emphasis) partition disks that may in any way be in use (mounted,
swap, etc) unless you know exactly what you are doing.

Let's pretend for a moment that this applies to me and I click Yes to
continue. I am curious about the "never" part of this.

In my situation, when I installed 10.2 I created primary swap and root
partitions in sdc1 and sdc2. I created an extended partion (sdc3) and
put /home in a logical partition (sdc5). I intentionally left unallocated
space at the initial install. I would now like to allocate this additional
space (sdc6) and mount it at /local.

Is it safe to do this while the disk is mounted?

I would like to know because I have done this already (several times) :-) and
it did not seem to cause any problems - except the last time. The
repartitioning worked, but /local was hosed (interpreted as a read-only file
system and no changes could be made - even as root).

I checked the disk and it turned out that sdc was failing SMART tests, and I
have replaced it. I have in the past tested the disks occassionally (and
will now do so more regularly) and I do not recall this disk ever having
failed the smart tests before this (but I am not sure about this).

I'm guessing that there was a bad area on the disk, which wasn't accessed as
it was in the unallocated space. Allocating the space led to these problems
surfacing.

I do not think that this was related to repartitioning the mounted disk, but I
would like some confirmation if possible. As I said, I've done this on other
disks previously and have not noticed any problems. Was I just lucky those
other times (and doing something I shouldn't be doing) or was I unlucky this
time.

Any information will be appreciated.

(I am getting somewhat paranoid about this because this is the 4th hard drive
I have had die on me in roughly the last 18 months. I don't know anyone else
in that time who has had even one go bad.)

try as root
rczmd stop
mv /var/lib/zmd/zmd.db /var/lib/zmd/zmd.db.bak (or something else)
rczmd restart

and wait. I've also had to reboot (or drop to runlevel 1 and back) to get

This has fixed several problem which crop up from time to time with zmd for me

[opensuse] OpenOffice Presentations - problems with graphics file formats

2007-03-06 Thread Don Raboud
Hi all, sorry if this is the wrong place to ask this. I would appreciate any
help with this, or a pointer on a more appropriate place to look.

I am using openSUSE 10.2.

I am trying to put some presentations together using OpenOffice Impress
(version 2.0.4, build 2.0.4.7), and I want to include some graphs generated
with gnuplot (version 4). I generate these as eps files.

Within Impress, eps is listed as a known graphics file format, but trying to
insert this image results in an error: "Unknown Graphics Format".

As a workaround, I have found that, using another program (xfig), I can import
the eps figure from gnuplot, and then simply export as an eps figure.

gnuplot.eps -> import into xfig -> export xfig.eps

No other steps are taken. The resulting xfig.eps file IS recognized by
Impress and gets displayed more or less correctly. However, if that image is
resized in Impress, some of the lines go missing, fonts become jagged/blurry,
etc. These are things I would expect from a bitmapped image, but this is not
how I understand eps files to work (which is one of the reasons I prefer to
work with eps files).

Based on this and some other experimentation with xfig export options, It
almost appears that some sort of preview image is included within the
generated eps file and THAT preview image is what is shown by Impress - does
anyone know if this is true?

I suppose I could figure out the size of figures I need at the end, get
gnuplot to generate the figure at this size, do the xfig thing and have a
useable file at the end, but I don't really look forward to doing that with
all of the figures that I would like to include.

Can anyone shed any light on this for me?

Paul,

If I understand you correctly, `ping lactarius' does not work on your machine.
Does `ping lactarius.complete.domain.name' work?

If so, do you have 'complete.domain.name' listed in the domain search list.

YaST -> Network Devices -> Network Card ->
then edit card and select Hostname and Name Server

It might help...

Yes.

This caught me as well not that long ago. The Options menu referred to in the
KMail Help is available in the composition window (and only in the
composition menu as near as I can tell, although I imagine it is in a config
file somewhere).

In my case, not only was automatic spellchecking turn off, but for some reason
KMail also defaulted to composing all messages as HTML. It took me some time
to finally figure out how to turn that feature off (the same options menu in
the composition window).

Just for clarity, in 10.2 you can choose from several package management
systems.  Under YaST->Software Management->Patterns both

Enterprise Software Management (ZENworks Linux Management)
and
openSUSE Software Management

are available. The first one is essentially the same as from 10.1 and I
agree with you it is still ridiculously slow.

However I've found the openSUSE Software Management choice works quite well
and is *much* faster than ZEN and friends.

> How do you set it up so that packages can be installed in a normal length of
> time?

I don't know what you consider a normal length of time, but I just fired up
YaST -> Software management and it took 36 seconds to scan the repositories
and bring up the installation screen (I have 5 listed, one set to refresh). I
imagine there is still room for improvement here, but this is by no means a
showstopper for me.

> And why does it not come that way by default?

Unfortunately the installation defaults to the Enterprise version. From your
complaints it sounds like you went with the default. (correct?)

I know you've said you've gotten rid of 10.2 for these reasons, but if you
like it otherwise, you might to try it again, and avoid ZEN and company.

Not really.

As I recall, KsCD digital extraction worked with 9.3 as well, but that option
was somehow disabled in 10.0 and 10.1 (and possibly 10.2). I eventually gave

Marc, thanks for the tip!

Yes, I was using KDE. I couldn't find a command line alternative to get this
information and didn't even think of checking the monitor itself.

The monitor reports 1280x1024 @ 60 Hz, so it looks like all is well (apart
from what KDE reports).

Having said that, I checked my laptop last night and found the same behavior,
KDE reports that the display is at 50 Hz when I have set it for 60 Hz.

Of course, there are no monitor controls on the laptop to get at the OSD
information. Is there a reliable way to get the refresh rate information for

2007-02-01 Thread Don Raboud
Hi all,

I've been following some of the advice on the list recently about improving
the fonts in 10.2. I have seen a huge improvement so far, but there are
still some issues.

In looking into all of this however, I have discovered that I can't get my
monitor to display at its native resolution (1280x1024) at 60 Hz.

NOTE: I'm using KDE and to get the refresh rate I right click on the desktop,
choose "Configure Desktop..." and then look at the refresh rate
under "Display". Is there a command line alternative to get this info?

Monitor:LCD BENQ FP937s
Graphics Card: NVidia GeForce PCX 5750
NVidia Driver: 1.0-9746

I have been using

sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia

and have tried many variations but I can't get 60 Hz. I have tried selecting
the generic LCD monitor (instead of the BENQ) and explicitly choosing
the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mode, testing looks ok and claims to be at 60 Hz, but
when
I save the results and go to init 5, the display is back at 50 Hz.

I've also tried (even though I don't know if I should)

sax --vesa 0:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

which didn't help. I've also tried to generate another modeline using

gtf 1280 1024 60

and replacing the modeline in xorg.conf with these values. This allows me to
select between 50 Hz and 55 Hz from the KDE desktop settings, but still no 60
Hz.

Finally, if I modify my current xorg.conf file and change the driver
from "nvidia" to "nv" (and make only that change), I can get a display at 60
Hz, but I lose the 3D acceleration and some of the font improvements as well.

Does anyone know how I can get 60 Hz on this monitor with the binary nvidia
driver?

I believe that enable/disable only applies to YaST.  The sources can still be
there and active in zen/zmd even when disabled in YaST. Deleting the repo in
YaST probably deleted the repo in ZEN/ZMD as well.

At the command line, what is the output from 'rug sl' and 'rug ca'?
(You might have to be root to do this). These will tell you what repos
ZEN/ZMD is using.

In 10.1, YaST online update shows all patches, even ones that have been
installed. These are shown as blue checks. The new ones to install would be
shown with a black check.

If there were no new patches to install, the window just closes when you click
accept. In that sense I believe that would count as expected behavior.

However, that still doesn't help with the other issues.
What happens in YaST online update if you filter by installation source?
Which installation sources show up?

I had something very similar happen not long ago. After
removing /var/lib/zmd/zmd.db and doing a 'rug refresh' I had only two updates
available, *both were the same*, something like

Suse_10.1_dvd_x86_64

I don't remember exactly, but there was "dvd" and "64" in there and I don't
even have a 64 bit system :-(

It eventually just went away, and one day, a few days later, I had regular
updates again. I did not remove and reinstall the installation sources, and
I did not run YAST online-update either in that period of time, although they
might have been useful approaches. I don't recall, but I may have rebooted
in that time, but not immediately before it started working.

One thing you might want to try is to drop to runlevel 1 and then back to 5
(or rebooting for a more drastic step). This seems to sometimes help ZEN/ZMD
along when merely stopping/restarting ZMD doesn't quite do it.

Hope this helps.

I've seen this as well, and it really seems to be a problem with the mirrors.
If I use a web browser and point it to

the file "directory.yast" seems to be shown every time I have checked.

However, follow that link and you are taken to one of the mirrors (at present
the file simply contains a few lines of text).

When the problem you mention occurs, it the selected mirror that returns the
file not found error, not the download.opensuse.org site as seems to be
indicated in the error message. You can see all this by trying with a web
browser.

> Besides, if it's a mirror/server problem, then one should not need to do

I've seen it for days at a time, but never weeks. I don't know if it is
possible to "suggest" to the download.opensuse.org site to try another
mirror. I suppose you could add one directly, if you know of one you are
satisfied with, and bypass download.opensuse.org altogether.

I think what you want is

Personal Settings -> Appearance and Themes -> Background
- choose Advanced Options
- uncheck Enable Shadow

[opensuse] Log file for KMail?

2006-12-12 Thread Don Raboud
Hello,

Does anyone know if there is a log file associated with KMail? I've not been
able to find one.

At home I have a pop mail account with my ISP and occasionally (twice in the
last three weeks) KMail is unable to retrieve any of the messages. The only
information is a dialog box which says something along the lines of "Unable
to complete LIST operation" (sorry, can't remember the exact message right
now).

The solution when this has happened has been to use another client like
Thunderbird, or even webmail, and simply delete the unwanted unread messages.
After this, KMail worked fine once again.

It seems like KMail is choking on at least one message somewhere, and I am
looking to find out a bit more information about which ones.

Thanks.

Not sure if this will help, but in the title bar, right click and
select "Configure Window Behavior" and then "Window-Specific Settings"

Anything there that looks suspicious?

Any luck with this?

For what it is worth, xterm is obeying the manual settings here. Since you
have tried many things, maybe there are some conflicts.

Try opening xterm, in the title bar select "configure window behavior" and
then pick "Window-Specific Settings". If you see a bunch of entries for"
Application setting for xterm" get rid of them all.

Then try once again Advanced -> Special Application Settings and set

Maximize Horizontally - Apply Initially - and check the last checkbox
(these are just what I selected as a test case)

Close xterm. Next time xterm is run it is maximized horizontally here.

Hope this helps.

Under KDE, right click on a window title bar, chose Advanced and then special
window settings (or special application settings), whatever seems
appropriate.

I hadn't originally (I did say I did not know much about virtual machines) but
after your response I have..

Installing vmtools does seem to improve the overall appearance and usability
of the vm, but the full-screen issue still remains. Switching into full
screen mode results in being kicked out of the kde session entirely.

[opensuse] VMWare Full-screen problems with nvidia binary driver

2006-12-05 Thread Don Raboud
Hello all,

This may not be the best place to ask this, but its not entirely
inappropriate.

I have recently downloaded the free VMServer, created a virtual machine and
installed XP Pro. When I try to switch to full screen mode (using the
toolbar or CRTL-ALT-) not only does this *spectacularly* fail to
work, but I am kicked out of my KDE session and wind up back at the kdm login
screen. Not Good. This is using the nvidia binary driver (1.0-9629).

However, if I change the screen resolution in XP to match what my monitor is
using (1280x1024) *before* switching to full screen mode, the full screen
works OK, but then of course the non-full screen view requires scroll bars to
navigate the desktop.

If I switch to the supplied open nv driver, the full screen mode works fine,
regardless of the selected resolution of XP (at least the ones I have tried).
The monitor switches to 800x600 for example and the XP "desktop" fills the
entire screen. In the non-full screen view the XP desktop just sits inside
the VMware application as I would expect it to.

I suppose this could be a bug in the binary nvidia driver, but it might also
have something to do with my particular settings. I am just not very familiar
with virtual machines so I though I would ask here. Anyone else seeing this
behavior?

kde 3.5.5 release "45.1"
VMware 1.01
nvidia driver 1.0-9629
kernel 2.6.16.21-0.21-smp
