Saturday night at the Pop Explosion

2004-07-14 Thread James Cooper
This was an incredible show, I think I saw one of the best performances of
my life, I'll get into it in a bit.
Again the show went really late, I'm just getting back, it's 3:20. I guess
if their going to have all ages gigs of about the same length, it's going
to push the over 19 gigs later. It's fair enough, but the crowd in general
get a bit to tired to really get into the band, I just want to know when I
should expect not to worry about I.D.

Here's the lineup,

Local Rabbits - I guess they were really good, but I missed them, yeeech!

Hardship Post - They did a great set, their rock rocked and their quiet was
actually done well. They're really becoming a diverse band, I think this
is the third stage of development for these guys. My only complaint, as
always, is that they played to short a set.

Bruce McCullough(sp?) - Ok

Bob Wiseman - too long, way too long

Scarce - Scarce are the best band anywhere, they were solid, they
completely blew the place apart. They're new drummer is so good. They
kicked the set off with Scorpion Tray and ended it with Hope, everything
in between was brilliant. Joyce made some comment about it being a bad day,
and that the crowd was making it a better one, the crowed was completely
into it, and Scarce fed of off it(also used it to introduce Days Like
This). They covered Ashes to Ashes(Bowie) and they did everything off
of the Red E.P.(which everyone should buy), and a couple old ones that
James recognized from a demo they sent to CKDU for when they played last
year's explosion. They'll be leaving for Europe sometime in the following
week, I guess the Dino. Jr. tour is still on for them, what did they do,
cancel a couple gigs so they could do the explosion? If so, they score way
up there on the bands who keep dates meter, and whatever other kind of
meter that measures good things.:)
I'm just awstruck by this band, I can hardly wait for their LP to come
out, it's going to be great.

gottagotobed, Jim

re: setting up a show

1995-12-31 Thread Brian Wieser
just my own two cents -- you can check out the massive article/piece on
setting up shows (spec. all ages) in the august '95 Discorder magazine,
which is on line (and fully hyper-texted!) at http://www.ams.ubc.ca/citr

show response

1995-12-31 Thread Roland Lefebvre
Howdy, AL HERE!
here are some suggestions for Bruce Wheeler's Weeping Tile, Inbreds, Treble
Charger show...
(this is my very first sloannet contribution, so bare with me, i
fear that i might appear as a pretentious know-it-all fool but hey!)

**these are my show tips**
-first of all, confirm your locale, cuz you'll definitely need to be sure of
its capacity size so you can judge what kind of sound system you'll need.
-it's usually much easier to book bands directly through the band members
than through a booking agent. e-mail the band and inquire about booking a
show and when you get your response at least you'll know who you'll be
dealing with.
(booking agents tend to be a wee bit more concerned about $money$, so
they'll usually be very interested in the capacity of the venue. more people
= more money, right?) Actually GETTING the band can be suprisingly easy.
-if you're renting equipment and getting someone to mix the sound for ya, be
sure to ask lots of questions (what does this nob do?) so you can learn
along the way. Depending on the size of the locale, renting huge columns and
big mixers can be QUITE useless INDEED.
-make sure technical stuff like mics and drums are covered (remember, if the
locale is big, you'll need mics for the drums also.)
-perhaps you can even attempt at getting a sponsor. If you're renting your
equipment from a particular music store they might CUT SOME COSTS if you
have the show like brought to you by (i don't know) The Kingston Shop of
Music Or just mention them on your ads and stuff.
-it's courteous to provide your bands with a room where they can hang with
some food, beer...

Anyways, if you have the money to start off, you'll be ok.
if any one disagrees with something i said, please don't shoot me down too
badly, remember... i'm NEW.

Re: adam PI sloan

1995-12-30 Thread Megan Lea Mallett
i don't know if adam PI sloan is the same one who nardwuar mentions, (but
it probably is) adam bootsy sloan used to be the student engineer at citr
(ubc radio
station) and lived with valeria for a while last year. that's when they
came up with their side project called Mishin Imposticle. They just
have the one tape.

and yes, valeria used to be with cub

adam used to play bass with perfume tree and now is in a rap group with
his sister, called Tara T and the Beat Assassinator. they have recently
released an independent cd. adam also runs noizi studios and has
recorded many vancouver bands over the years. he said that he's going to
be releasing a cassette compilation of all the remixes that he's done for
the bands he's recorded. it should be cool!

wow, finally something i can comment on!

1995-12-30 Thread Tara Lee Wittchen
hey y'all...

my sister (she thinks collective soul is wicked, to put this story into
some sort of context) and i (no need for explanations, i defy them all)
were driving home from our parents house tonight and i was dominating the
car stereo. she asked me to play something goodyou know, like sloan
or something. ok fine. when 500 Up starts, she goes this is a cover,
right? :) hahaha, i laughed. no, but they rip off everything so it may
as well be, i tell her.

we continue driving. (it's a 7 hour journey.)

an hour later, we were listening to _the great pacific ocean_ and when
patriot came on, she goes now *this* is a cover, right?? and i
laughed again. well, if it's not a cover, it's a huge ripoff of
someoneit's driving me crazy, who is this a ripoff of??? she begins
asking over and over again.

steve miller? i suggest, tongue in cheek.

YES she shrieks. they're ripping off steve miller!

I laughed again and told her the story of how thrush hermit played an all
steve miller set at edgefest, so maybe it was possible (i'm proud to say
my knowledge of the steve miller band is fairly limited).

oh. is this thrush hermit? she asks.

yes. that's why i told you the steve miller story, i explain. she's
smart, but only in certain ways, if you get my drift...

well, maybe it's not steve miller. it's some crappy 70s band, though,
they're ripping off someone like thatmaybe CCR, she continues.

hmmm. well, now that i've read this story, it's actually a lot less funny
than it seemed at the time. you had to be there, i guess.

anyway, the new grand are here in calgary and they played last night at
the night gallery. i was 7 hours away playing cards with my grandmother,
and so i cannot report on sonic unyon's latest darlings. i will, however,
reveal their current conditions, as reported by mike clive several
moments ago

we're fucking TIRED.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (Alex Bozikovic)

BEST EC LP:
1. Sloan, _Twice Removed_ I don't care *when* it came out. One of my fave
records of all time.
2. Superfriendz, _Mock Up, Scale Down_

BEST EC EP/SINGLE:
1. The Great Pacific Ocean - T.H. when the hell will they put out an ALBUM?
2. Stood Up/Same Old Flame - Sloan. Not their best songs, but still
pretty damn good.
3. Wait a Day/ Paranoid etc. - Orange Glass

BEST NON-EC LP:
1. Radiohead, _The Bends_
2. Snailhouse, _Fine_ these songs infiltrated themselves into my brain and
refused to go away.
3. Blue Rodeo, _Nowhere To Here_ a truly great band, and a solid album.

Honourable mentions, since they came out last year, to Change of Heart,
_Tummysuckle_, Jeff
Buckley's _ Grace_ and Sarah McLachlan's _Fumbling Towards Ecstasy_ - all
brilliant records.

BEST NON-EC EP/SINGLE:
1. treble charger, _self=title_ Whatever misgivings you may have about them,
you can't (I can't, at
least) deny the quality of these songs. Solid.
2. Sarah McLachlan, _The Freedom Sessions_

BEST (ROCK) SHOWS:
1. The Tragically Hip/Odds/Change of Heart - Maple Leaf Gardens, Feb 10. Just
incredible.
Especially seeing CoH rawk out for 12,000 people (and say hi to their fans
;) )was great.
2. Rheostatics, Ultrasound - September 23. They're even nicer then they are
talented. wow.
3. DOA benefit, Opera House, Easter; a great Rheos set with Tyler Stewart;
punk fucking rawk
from CoH, and an incredible set from treble charger.

Change of Heart didn't play enough this year. :(

FUNNIEST MUSICAL MOMENT:
Thrush Hermit at Edgefest III. Honestly, I didn't quite pee my pants; but it
was close. When Rob introduced the band during Swingtown, I felt just like
I'd warped back to the Steve Miller show I saw, except that I was surrounded by
thousands of utterly confused grunge kids.
They and Sloan and CoH combined almost made up for the Killjoys. Almost.

MOST BITTERSWEET MOMENT.
Sloan playing Bells On at Edgefest III.
It was one of those moments that remind me why I love music so much.

I'm sorry if I got carried away, but it was quite a year.

Merry Christmas, kids. :) :)

Top 10 of '95

1995-12-25 Thread Mike Frederick Winter

Just to be different.

1. Yo La Tengo | Electro-Pura
-- Is anyone right now putting out more consistently
wonderful and beautiful music? This album is
simply amazing, even better then 'Painful'.

2. Palace | Viva Last Blues
-- In some ways their weakest, but still a brilliant
album. Palace is probably the answer to my question
above, last years S/T is still probably my favourite
album.

3. Pram| Saragasso Sea
-- Saw them play in England this summer, was sort of
impressed, but this album is really damn good.
Imagine stereolab with a jazzy/expiremental feel.

4. Superfriendz | Mock up / Scale Down
-- Simply rocks, what a great album.

5. Stereolab | Refried Ectoplasm [Switched on Vol. II]
 -- I know it's a compilations, but.. Great album,
as always. Exploding Head Movie is one of the
best songs I've ever heard.

6. Elevator to Hell | S/T
-- First side is absolute genius, second side is
absolute garbage, Rick seems to have gotten
more inconsistent with his songwriting lately.

7. Joy Division | Permanence
-- Another compilation, but.. Good, although I'm not
enough of a fan to know if this is a good
representation, and it is pretty inconsistent.

8. Bugskull |Phantasies and Sensations
-- Neat noise band from Portland, this album might
go up a lot as I listen to it more, I know some
of my indie rock obsessive friends have it as #1.

9. Mouse on Mars | S/T
-- Cool ambient stuff on Too Pure from Germany. Only
have had this for a week, so bit unfair.

10. Hayden | Everthing I Long For
-- Kind of on for lack of anything else to put here.
This album is twice as long as it has to be, and
there's so much garbage on here, although there's
enough cool stuff to carry it through.

sonic unyon

1995-12-24 Thread Kelly A. Ruberto

i know this isn't really east coast related but...

last night i went to the sonic unyon records christmas
party in toronto. most of the sonic unyon bands played
including: gorp, sianspheric, smoother, shaller (formerly
known as shallow), poledo, tristan psionic, kittens, and
 the new grand.
the place was pretty packed. the night got off to kind of
a rough start because people had to wait outside in the
cold for a really long time because the club (lee's palace)
were beings assholes and making everyone do a mandatory
coat check. this took so long that when the new grand hit
the stage at 8:15, there were only about 40 people inside.

other than that, the show was a great success.

in response to something that tara da costa posted a little
 while ago:
 1) the new grand are indeed now officially signed to sonic
unyon. they will be going to calgary on boxing day to do
some recording for a seven inch that will be out on bubblegun
records in a few monthes (radioblaster will also be on it).
they are also planning on releasing a cd on sonic unyon
in the spring/summer next year. they were talking to
brendan mcguire last night about producing their cd.

  2) i'm pretty sure that treblecharger are not moving to new
york city. i think tara misunderstood what she read. (it
was sort of vague). actually they signed to rca records out
of new york city. they plan on staying on sonic unyon in
   canada though.

also, it will be at least six weeks until treblecharger
will be playing any shows because greig (guitarist) shattered
his wrist in a snowboarding mishap.

I just fealt like posting cause it feels like a while since I have last
done so.. I just wanted to tell those people who (about 3 months ago)
said that Al Tuck was a poor opener for the Super Friendz..

You are all sooo wrong
.On Thurs I saw the New Al Tuck band.. Al Tuck New Action?..
hmm..? But yeah, this is only my second time ever to see them play and I
liked this show much better than the first.. in particular, the new
guitar/organ player (name please?) was incredible on guitar.. I can't belive
some of the licks this guy came up with, he rules.. and I think that Al
can sing just fine.. or maybe I'm just tone dealf, I dunno.. But I can
totally see Al Tuck being a great opener for the Friendz.. In a way all
of the (Al Tuck) guitar noodeling is very Matt Murphy. So I have to say
that I think they would have been a match made in heaven, straight up.

Oh, and I hope to see you all at the Cinnomin Toast xmas shindig at the
crappy old Birdland tonite.. I know it is probably too late to find out
but, who else will play besides R West?.. I hear that Dusty Sorbet will
also play.. who else?.. anyone?.. hmm. This would be a great time for
another last time ever, we swear Sloan show.. don't you think? Not that
that would be a bad thing though.. au contraire mon amie.. Well, whatever,
pipe talk.. Merry Christmas sloan net..

hej.

here's my votes based on the stuff i have heard this past year:

1) best east-coast band

sloan. eric's trip. the state champs.

(to be taken with a grain of salt. i haven't seen any of them live. but
they seem to be nice and friendly bands who are also really good on
record/tape :) )

2) best non-east-coast band

shellac. superchunk. guided by voices.

(shellac where seriously so unbelieveably good live. superchunk made this
year's best album. and guided by voices are from the sixties and still
making great, great music. to be compared with, for example, the kinks..
;) and, mmm, dinner is ruined did almost make it on here. dave and dale
are the friendliest.)

3) best east-coast LP

the motes-gesner
state champs-back to the billions
elevator to hell-s/t

(three words: gesner, ant records ;) )

4) best non-east-coast LP

superchunk-here's where the strings come in
pitchblende-au jus
guided by voices-alien lanes

(au jus was released here in europe by matador in '95 and archers of
loaf's vee vee tar'sover and out are still competing fiercly with
gbv to get on top-three :) )

5) best east-coast EP or single

thrush hermit-great pacific ocean
sloan-stood up/same old flame
state champs-nevada downs

(the et and elevator to hell 7-inchers were good too)

6) best non-east-coast EP or single

the grifters-eureka ep
polvo-new radiant storm king 7
starmarket-your style ep

(i haven't heard the new polvo ep yet. would probably have been there
if i had. mmm starmarket is actually a swedish band! kind of like a
ninties husker du with *a lot* of energy and enthusiasm (and a liking of
superchunk). a hardcorier thrush hermit maybe?)

7) best live performance (a single date, a single band please!)

shellac at the pukkelpop festival hasselt, belgium on the 26th of august.

(unsane, dinner is ruined, six finger satellite, starmarket, stereolab and
guided by voices where *really* good too)

8) best video (EC or non)

-

(watching bands pretending to be rocking out backed up by their own
studio-recorded song makes *me* feel dumb. so. shouldn't all this
miming in front of the camera making *the bands* feel, at least, *a
little* dumb too??? anyway. because of this, videos usually just
suck. :P )

will:) i thought it was great! they opened up with venus and mars by
wings...and it worked well. mike was centered between seb on the left on
drums facing centre, and alyson playing bass on the right facing centre. it
was a rather laid back set, but well performed. lots of new songs, and
only one, capability, old song. the new songs were really good, only
featuring mike as the vocalist, with seb and alyson on backups.

i sorta miss the old hardship post, but i'm just viewing all these
changes as a new band now. i know it's not indicative of them now, but i
*still* think it would be nice to hear colourblind or my only aim

jale have infact released three vids for their Closed ep
how did they afford it
one Double Edge was sponsored by VideoFACT and the other two
Jesus Loves Me and Long way Home were hand made at very low cost, shot on
Super eight by Eve-Jesus Loves Me, and Jennifer-Long Way Home
and they were eddited with the help of Ann Verrall at the Center For rt
Tapes, an Artist run Center here in Halifax.
You do not need $20 000 to make a video
just a great idea, it is the perfect oportunity for those
Spike Jonzes who think music is cool but there skills are visual not

what the *HELL* happened to stinkin rich a.k.a. the buck sixty fifth
a.k.a. DJ critical a.k.a. richard terfry??? i always figured his beard
was like, a constant, as inevitable as death and taxes, as right as rain.
tonight on much*subliminalhatemessagestojonbartlett*east, there was
footage from birdland's anniversary party (hi brendan-on-tv-ryan!) and
i noticed the glaring absence of rich's goatee thing. PLUS he was wearing
indie nerd glasses - he almost looked like jon dacey!!! :)

has jale released *three* videos for their EP? long way home was shown
tonight, someone mentioned a video for jesus loves me a while ago, and
i've seen a video for double edge a few months back. how did they
afford to do this?

did eric's trip ever release a video for girlfriend as was rumored here

did both pressings of the bubaiskull 7'' run out yet?

Re: Calgary band crap

1995-12-18 Thread Lisa Wilton

I logged on figuring on finding a big post from Tara Lee herself
about the show, but alas, there was none. Who played on Friday, Lisa?

Apparently, I was wrong about them not filming on Friday since they spent
at least 10-15 minutes talking about the bands who played that night. I
thought the FEDS were quite good, they're sort of this ska/mod hybrid and
they brought out the Mod contingent who have been lurking around Calgary
for the past few months. Wagbeard are surprisingly good considering
they're not really my style. They more thrash pop than most of the stuff
I like, but the songs are pretty catchy none the less. And Pat, the
guitarist is probably one of the funniest guys I've ever met. If you
watched it, he's the geek with the glasses :)

Where were the Primrods, Chixdiggit and Huevos Rancheros?? What other good
bands are there in Calgary? It seems like there are a lot of new bands,

I think Simeon from RAF wanted to showcase some of the newer pop bands,
and also he wanted different bands who didn't play last year. It's too
bad the Primrods didn't play because they great, if you can find there cd
where you are, pick it up. Chixdiggit and Huevos Rancheros really don't a
lot of showcasing, at least in Calgary. Huevos are now on One Little
Indian in the UK and Chixdiggit just got signed to SubPop. Graham Huevos,
the bassist just left the band though. I don't think they are going to
break up though, I think they're looking for a new bassist now. So if any
of you hep cats can play a mean surf punk bass guitar..

I've just noticed all the typos and shit that I've made. Sorry. Anyway,
two bands from Cowtown you should keep an eye out for, TOLEDO SPEEDWAY
and STRAIGHT. Toledo Speedway is a band Mike Catano might like, kind of
Swervedriver-ish at times and Straight are like a cross between poppy
Superchunk and good Pixies. Very nice.

even since I was there in May. And what the hell is with Difference Engine

Funk rock isn't really my scene either.

Matt, who thinks MuchWest's Calgary coverage was 8.47 billion
times better than its Winnipeg coverage. G. And I was also pleased to
discover that Winnipeg's music scene has a buzz about it, or so says Steve
 from Wagbeard. Curious.

If I'm not mistaken, Crash Test Dummies are from there aren't they? That
scene's a hoppin'!!

Cheers, Lisa :-)

the republik (note spelling, hip communist-era/80s reference for ya) is

Re: schizoid reissue

1995-12-17 Thread McHugh,Janet;Med;
OK, this is a hoot. The reissue is just the left over copies of the
original pressing with new covers on them. It was NOT recorded or
released in '85 it was recorded in '86 and released in '87. The other
guitar player was Bob Average (nee Armstrong) he is also the one who
rereleased it and we all are not quite sure where the 10th anniversary
thing came from. He now lives in T.O. which explains the record label
thing, he used to play for Rise as well. Rod Wills plays drums, he used
to play for W.A.F.U.T., Fish n Rod, the Privateers and some other bands.

The thing to watch for when buying Schizoid singles is to see if you got
the mispressing which has the same two songs on each side and one of them
isn't even supposed to be on the record, and isn't on the real pressing.
There's something like 100 copies of the mispress around.

Everything else Jeremy said was correct.

THRUSH HERMIT PLAYS CHARLOTTETOWN

1995-12-16 Thread Deryl Gallant
Hey folks, this is Matt writing from Deryl SLOAN NET's BEST
FRIEND Gallant's computer at his house because my University is closed now.
Amyway I'll skip to the chase and tell you cats about the hottest show
to hit this frigid town since the Doughboys back in July.
The show started off with North of Oblivion but I call them North of
Nowhere. The songs sucked and so didn't the asshole musicians ( except for the
replacement bass player ). It was a hard core Mettalica original band which
was
fronted by CIMN's worst nightmare. Finley Martin who is the Student Union's
President passed a bill that would get rid of all the all ages shows at the Barn
in the future...he is a big asshole.
Anyhoo, T42, fresh off their Colonel Gray Battle of the Band's win
put on
a spectacular show. Their set was so tight that a nuclear bomb wouldn't
distract
them. Their spectacular power pop made for some cool moshing/dancing for the
mainly under 17 crowd that was present. Danny and Andrew even told Finley
off on stage, much to the delight of the audience that will have to wait at
least another year just to be able to come and see their favourite bands
play at the Barn.
Strawberry gave a very interesting version of their songs I'm a
Train and Only Son. The set had little energy, probably cuz they played
last night at Pat's Rose and Grey until 1:30. Still the people were not
dissapointed as they introduced a couple of new songs...one of them was
incredible but I forget the name (doh). For those of you who may come to
Charlottetown for a little visit, drop by the Island Rock Cafe which will
have Strawberry play every Thursday until the spring.
Then came Thrush Hermit. Holy sshhishcabob...they were amazing.
This was the second time I have seen them and the first for many in the pit
and on the outskirts of the pit. They blew us away with Claim to Lame and
Patriot. And Rob broke his little g-string (teehee) and so All Dressed
Up was scaled down to a power trio with Joel holding his own. They
dedicated the entire set to Bernadine Hall which is a female residence here
at UPEI ( are they that despaerate? ) The last two songs French Inhale
and The Great (PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND) caused the young crowd to get rid off
all their anger about the infamous bill in the pit...it wasn't violent but
it had the most teenage energy I have ever witnessed...G.P.O. blasted the PA
system as Rob, Ian and Joel all jacked up their amps to eleven for the final
song.
It was a great show and I had the honour of interviewing the
Hermits. Thumbs up for kindness and honesty (seriously).
Oh by the way Carol, Ian does not apologize for anything...he made a
mistake and that is that...maybe you should phone him again.

This has been Matt reporting from dullsville turned
partyville (at least for tonight).
I would love to hear comments and or stories from others who
have seen Thrush Hermit.

Don't reply here...reply to [EMAIL PROTECTED] or post on
the Sloan Net. Thanx.

Hey there...I might as well kill two birds with one computer!!!
It's Deryl Your fav poster!!! Anyway...north of oblivion from my point of
view were tight...but I had to laugh when Finley boy swung the ol' guitar
around his back and started doing pelvic thrusts directed in joel's direction!!!
Their Bon jovi meets megadeath sound wasinteresting!! That's all I can
say about themOh but matt's enthusiasm on stage was unbleivable. he
never moved smiled or breathed. He begged me all day to play for them but I
refused!!
T42, wow...I've been so impressed with these guys lately. They've
really buckled down and made themselves a lot of fans with their cute faces
and rockin sound. They also commented on the pathetic bill passed. They
thanked mr finely personally for ruining most bands future!!!
Strawberry's slow moody set showed another side to them. although
there was little energy there was an unspoken comunnicationbetween them adn
the crowd.
You could feel how tired they were!! But towards the end they blew me away
with their new songs!!
Thrush hermit was a first for me. 'twas a cherry I've never
moshed like this besides the doughboys, as matt said!! I got kicked and
punched and thrown around and It was amazing. Pain is good!! Towards the
end my legs felt lost and so did the rest of me, but I had enough energy to
blare out french inhale while trying to get up off the floor for one more
scream. a!! it was sooo cool. Joel can move around I tell ya!! Ian
had fun trying to kick up at hte low ceiling and well...joel had no problem
skinning his head on it.
I love his guitarI want one!! ANyway, now that you've read two reviews
on the same show I shall sleep my pain off. Later,
Deryl;

TH at the Barn

1995-12-16 Thread Melissa Buote
OKnow for my say on the thrush hermit show at the
barnfirstly, I would have to say that it is the best show I have
seen here since SFz at Myron'sthe hermit totally rawked

TH missed the 5 pm ferry so had to catch the 6:30 one and I was
afraid that they would have to load in sometime during the show, but
by some miracle (or fast driving on the part of Joel?) they got there
at like 8:30this was considerably early I guess since North of
Oblivion didn't show up until 5 minutes before their
sethmmm...*real* professionalN of O played their set but I
will withhold any opinion so as not to seem unfairthere was no
way I was going to let myself enjoy their show even if they were good
considering all the details of who is in the bandthat bass player
was cool though...=) haha
It was kinda funny...but kinda mean too...that nobody in the audience
clapped at allthey just stared blankly at the band...not
surprising considering 90% of the audience was under 17 though...

T42 was up nextwhat a cool bunch o' kidsthey were so together
it actually shocked methey have really really gotten their act
together since last I heard them livemaybe it was the fact that
Brian Arsenault was on bassi dunnothey were super
thoughand their snide remarks about all ages shows was a real
bonus =)

Strawberry played a pretty downbeat set but great nonethelessnot
much to say about themi always love their showsthey, too,
slagged the SU which was wonderful

the hermit put on a fine, fine showthey played hits like french
inhale and claim to lame, etc...and some new tunes for the island
kids like Layla II... but I really liked that Great Pacific Prince
Edward Island song =)
even they got into the act of complaining about the lack of all ages
showsJoel said it best that night when he said that we should
keep having them not to exclude the older folks but to include the
younger folksthey were great and I hope that we will have more
all ages shows in the future at another venueor maybe the
tyrannical SU will change their mindsuntil then that's it for the
CIMN showsat least we went out with a bang

Charlottetown bands rock high school

1995-12-14 Thread Matt Hennessey

Hey this is Matt. I just wanted to take a break from the
slagging and unslagging of Sonic Youth...my two cents, they totally
rawk.
I will talk to you about a BATTLE OF THE BANDS that took
place at Colonel Gray Senior High School. It was the third year they
held it but for the first time the event, created by the entrepeneur
class at school, made it so all the bands were original ones...ie no
COVER BANDS.
It started off with my band Chase...our second real gig and
we won over some fans with our so close to sloan but not sound. We
even impressed ourselves, I hope that doesn't sound too conceded. It
was loads of fun.
Next came Chinese CHeckers who welded Sonic Youth and NOFX
together with surprisingly good results. It was their first gig ever
and they actually only had two rehearsals beforehand...although I was
told it was for nine hours each.
After them came a crowd favourite, Smokin'Cinnamon. This was
the first time I heard them play and I was very impressed. The lead
singer Damion, has quite a pair of lungs on him...he almost
singlehandedly blew John Boland's PA system.
The forth band was Watchmaker who will be opening for Bad
Luck #13 on Saturday here in Charlottetown. Despite the fact that
they did not like their performance, being the only true punk band
added some personality and some pizzazz. I really like these guys.
Of course I'm a sucker for punk bands.
T42, the eventual winners, played their set with enthusiasm
and a very playfull spirit. They recruited Strawberry's bass player
Brian Arsenault and he played real good...plus he is the coolest bass
player on the face of the planet (besides Chris Murphy teehee).
Unfortunately their replacement bass player is just that: a
replacement (NO HE IS NOT PAUL WESTERBERG).
ed who, came up next and rawked the joint with their
Nirvanaesque songs. BUt it was their rap song that blew the crowd
away. Nathan the lead singer needs to go to a therapist...he really
has the thing called teen angst.
The Raw Overtones, GREAT BAND, played last and left everyone
far from high and dry...Robbie spit water on the mosh pit which was a
large one. This incredible power trio made Colonel Gray's pricipal's
ears to bleed...maybe I'm going a little too far. I have reported on
these guys before on my reviews of Charlottetown bands and I forgot
to tell you to bring earplugs to their shows.
That does it for tonight, thanx for reading, those other
bands should prove to a lot of people not only around here but also
around the Maritimes that Charlottetown does have a thriving scene
despite our small size. As usual any questions, comments, info on
how to contact the bands just type.

Matt

p.s. Bob your tape is coming.

kudos to the lmb for his performance on bnw last night. i always
start laughing when he comes on the radio. it's like- hey, i know
this person. well, i don't know james but i know him. whatever.
anyway, the sloan scandal thing was pretty funny and i could hardly
contain myself. secondly, i'd just like everyone to know that i'm
selling t-shirts that have len are assholes on the front. it's sort
of a rip off of the tide logo, which i thought would be cool. on the
back it sez bum tip records sort of ripping off the fun trip logo.
they're going to be $10 and i've got a limited supply so order

Well maybe the close up of Eve has to do with with the fact that she

I've only seen their video for `Double-Edge' once. I think all the

jale is going home from Chicago today, having all but finished their new

Rock critics vote for east coast bands...

There was a vote for the top ten albums of the year by some rock critics
in the Southam-Star network... Ashley MacIsaac, The Super Friendz, and
Rebecca West recieved one vote each.. (it's a start! g)

traditional jigs and reels with tasty dance beats and rock riffs.

From: Derek Weiler, Kitchener-Waterloo Record

Rebecca West, Burners On, (Cinnamon Toast)

The lastest spawn of the Halifax scene check in with a debut that has all
the poise and hooks but none of the self-conscious cutesiness of the
forebears.

The Super Friendz, Mock Up Scale Down, (Murder)

She was underwhelmed
If that's a word
I know it's not
'Cause I looked it up
That's one of those skills
That I learned in my school

I was overwhelmed
And I'm sure of that one
'Cause I learned it
Back in grade school
When I was young

She said, You is funny
I said, You are funny
She said, Thank you
And I said, Never mind
And she rolled her eyes
Her beautiful eyes

The point is not the grammar
It's the feeling
That is certainly in my heart
But not in hers

We were talkin' about people
That eat meat
I felt like an ass
'Cause I was one
She said, It's okay
But I felt like
I just ate my young

She's obviously
A person with a cause
I told her that
I don't smoke or drink
She told me to loosen up
On her way to the L.C.

She skips her classes
And gets good grades
I go to my courses
Rain or shine
She's passing her classes
While I attend mine

She wrote out a story
About her life
I think it included
Something about me
I'm not sure of that
But I'm sure of one thing
Her spelling's atrocious

She told me to read
Between the lines
And tell her exactly
What I got out of it
I told her affection had two F's
Especially when
You're dealing with me

I usually notice
All the little things
One time I was proud of it
She says it's annoying
She cursed me up and down
And rolled her R's
(Her beautiful R's)

She says I'm caught up
In triviality
All I really wanna know
Is what she thinks of me
I think my love for her
Makes me miss the point
I miss the point

There's a dancing girl
She can be broken
In your hands
She knows you're looking at her
But that's what scares her
You're in the space
That she commands

If she still likes you
You might get a call
She'll ask you why
You stood and stared
You will be hearing from her
But that should scare you
If she still likes you
Be prepared

Pardon me for calling
But I'm just checking in
You don't know who I am
But I know where you've been
You sit and tap your fingers
When you should tap your phone
Tap all your resources
Until she leaves you alone
She leaves you alone

I AM THE CANCER from _SMEARED_ LP

So long, Matthew
I will miss you
There is too much to do
Or I'd go with you
It's a bad time
I haven't got a dime

So long, Allison
I now know where you've been
But I don't know where you're goin'
There's security in knowing
But I know some morning
Without any warning
You'll be gone

Oh you've kissed me, kissed me
Now you're supposed to miss me

So long, Andrew
I will miss you
I just wrote you a long note
You'd better answer
I am the cancer
Removed from you

Oh you've missed me, missed me
Now you've got to kiss me
Kiss me goodbye

So long, scarecrow
At least with you I know
You're going nowhere
What do you care
There's nothing up your sleeve
So you can never leave
Why would you?

Stay there, scarecrow
Sorry I had to go
But I shall return
It was my turn to get away
Someone had to stay
So I can go

I miss you most of all
You've kissed me, kissed me
I can't wait until you kiss me
Until you kiss me
I can't wait until you kiss me
Kiss me again

MEDIAN STRIP from _SMEARED_ LP

I can't tell you what I want to
I can't tell you
I can smell you a mile away
Measured arms you've flexed before
Next to a battleship
You made me mad, I made you sad
But now I'm glad you're gone
Take me on, take me on

Count to ten, I'll be there
Tone it down, I'll be in the barrel
Point came for you to be
Gettin' close to me
Can't you see I can't be
P-P-I-M-I-S-S
I assess the situation differently

You should hit the median strip
You should hit the median strip

Take me on, take me on

Three day bender set you straight
Two flights were both on time
To fight was on your mind
Tonight I don't feel fine
Feel free to dwell on what you feel
Free to say I don't feel free
You made me mad and now I've had
To say that I was wrong

You should hit the median strip
You should hit the median strip

Take me on, take me on

I know it's none of my business
What you do
But you don't have a clue

But he's got it out for you
I thought I should tell you

Hold this close to your chest
No one can know
He won't let his feelings show
He keeps them under wraps although
They would love to flow

What he never told you
Is that he would love to hold you
Take a look around
Take it in

Take it in, take it in

I don't think
That it's appropriate to cry
Here's something to wipe your eye
His only fault
Was that he was much too shy
And he didn't even try

So bein' all by yourself
Is no way to be
There's plenty of fish in his sea
It's not the end of the world
Take it from me
You can take from me

Forever Again ISPC

1995-12-13 Thread Lousy
A, well, sort of friend of mine (we only know eachother through email) bought
a CD with Eric's Trip in a what we in Sweden would call a Buy, Trade Sell
recordstore (but we use the Swedish words :). He'd never heard them before and
thought it was a single but it turned out to be a copy of Forever Again with the
words In-Store Play Copy written all over it. The cover is not the same as the
real one, it's got a blackwhite photo of the band sitting on the top of a
stair, taken from the bottom of the stairs. It was unopened, still in plastic,
and he paid 20 SEK for it... that's like 4 CAD I think...

Um, well, that's all... maybe it's interesting to someone...

BTW, Johnny Panic wrote reg. Sonic Youth :
4. they suck cos washing machine has got one stinking lousy cover.

Cool, have they really covered one of OUR songs???!!! :)

SuperFriendz article in _Watch_

1995-12-13 Thread Helen Luu
Okay, I was asked to post this so here it is:

(comes from the Dec. 1995 _Watch_.. there's also a photo of the SFZ.. but
look! No tight shirts! ;))

These days, being a part of the Canadian music scene just isn't
what it used to be. The Hip have become just another roadside attraction,
Sloan seems to be in perpetual hiatus and everyone is listening to
brit-pop.. Who will help us reclaim our Canadian pride? Well, my money's
on Super Friendz, another great band from Canada's east coast. ANd like
all new bands, their life is touring.
We have been on three tours where we've played to people who have
basically never heard our music before, says Drew Yamada (guitar). With a
comment like that, you can tell Super Friendz have already had their share
of bad touring experiences, including gruelling drives from gig to gig.
Once we had to drive from Toronto to Edmonton between shows. We drove for
36 hours straight. We lost it. It was fun, Drew recalls.
As for their music, Super Friendz' sound brings new meaning to the
word eclectic. There are four band members, three of whom write songs and
each of whom has a distinct style. All memebers sing too, making for some
nice harmonies. Formed in 1993 in Halifax by Matthew Murphy (guitars),
Yamada and Charles Austin (bass), Super Friendz was originally an acoustic
band. Then, in 1994, after various drummers - including Thrush Hermit's
Cliff Gibb and Sloan's CHris Murphy - played with them, Dave Marsh took
over and Super Friendz as we know them was created. (guess they forgot
about SFZ new drummer extroadinaire)
In New York they have a nickname for Canadian bands, says
Yamada. They call us ham n' eggers. Hopefully, Super Friendz will
elevate Canadian music above the level of breakfast food.

schizoid reissue

1995-12-12 Thread Jeremy Harris Clarke
maybe this is old news, but downtown at Fred's Record's, scoping out the
selection of 7 singles, i came across a 10th anniversary SCHIZOID 7, a
reissue of the 1985(well duh!) release, the beer thief(i think),
with 4 rad songs in all, including possessed to golf and death deliverer.
the original copy, i am pleased to announce, is still going strong up at
CHMR-FM-your only alternative in st. john's.

SCHIZOID, if anyone would like to know, included phil winters of BUNG on
guitar, production/sound engineer boy don ellis, formerly of TOUGH JUSTICE
and RISE(resposible for some HARDSHIP POST recordings and the BUNG CD _and_
will turn the knobs for the POTATOBUG recording) who is also a new dad, on
bass, and mountain bike king chris jerret on vocals(i think). i don't
recognize the other 2 guys, but maybe i do know them(or maybe not). i
think wallace hammond, who recorded most of DANGER: FALLING ROCK and was
in DA SLYME way, WAY back recorded it too, and it all took place back in
march of 1985(ah, grade 2...).

mysteriously(not really), it's on some punk label out of ontario; does
anyone(hub?) know what one, i forget? anyway, it's only $4.98 for 4
songs, from one of the best bands to come from these pine clad hills, and
you should pick it up cause it's got balls. ooo yeah.

lust,

I had to leave out one band -- Jellyfishbabies -- in order to fit all
the rest on the computer screen. Chris has them located right next door
to Registered Vote but not connected to anyone else. His note reads:

Chris Murphy's my name and I'm taking credit or blame for this Halifax
music scene family tree. The tree itself was actually more twisted than
this so I ended up eliminating some lines as it was getting too messy and
hard to follow. I didn't put every band I could think of either because I
couldn't connect them to anyone else or I didn't like the band. But the
lines I did draw I think are true. I was relying on others near the top
in the 'before my time' section. Sue me if I'm wrong.

He also writes a list of Honourable Mentions: Null Set, Redd Leader,
The Nerve, Next X, The Quirk, Cooter Family, Roland Blinn, Basic English,
Phycus, Aimless, Donner Party Reunion, Merge, Tetris

That's 68 bands on Chris Murphy's chart and I can
claim to have seen 17 of them live (=25%). There
must be some longtime scenesters on this list who
have seen many more than that. Anyone?

someone asked about the song american groove and i wrote:

american groove is an MC5 song.

and then chris trowbridge corrected me...

don't mean to be picky but...american ruse is an MC5 song. New York
Groove is an Ace Frehely song. Groove is in the Heart is a Deeelite
song. We're an American Band is a Grand Funk Railroad song.
I don't know any American Groove, though it would be in good company as
a song title...

hey chris, you're absolutely right. actually, jay corrected me
after i posted that.

i think where this all stems from is the sloan cover of that song
which you can hear them do live in that concert that is being
rebroadcast on dec 23. if i remember correctly it sounds like they
are saying american groove.

anyways. yeah. american ruse, mc5. that's the song.

On Thu, 7 Dec 1995, Jonathan Dacey wrote a lot about logos getting ripped:

anyhow personally my 2 cents is that the whole thing is rather lame ..
most bands rip off cool logos.. ie youd probably wear a shirt with the
original logo on it cause its a cool logo... so whats the point really?
the novelty of saying wow thats the snickers logo.. thats funny is
pretty minimal and wears off preaty quick... now sure even good bands
have ripped off logos.. namely pavement.. and ;like all things this isnt
a cut and dry matter... in pavements cse you have to realise the logo
they stole (the peavey powered .. amp motto) was so but ugly no one in
their right mind would have worn the original shirt and thus they put a
suitably pavement slant on the issue...

um. to all you pavement freaks out here.

like three years ago (or something) pavement had this really amazingly
cool tee on which they had ripped off the logo to the danish beer tuborg.
me, living in scandinavia, i've since birth known what this logo looks like,
but do any of you northamericans do so? anyway, the shirt was pretty dark
green with the white logo on front. i've only seen one of these and i
remember how incredibly bad i wanted one too. it was (and still is) the
coolest.

Ok.. There's another all-ages show at the jammin monkey this friday
night.. As far as I know the bands that are playing are: CHED, the Jon
Kenneth Wilkes Blues Band, and Wheadeater (sp?). All of these bands are
great... CHED are one of the best St. John's bands IMHO.. JKW are great,
a bit of a change from the style of a lot of the other local bands.. AND
wheadeater are excellent, especially that peter guy.. He's special..
=P Oh my.. And of course you also get the treat of Brian Downton in two
of these bands, he plays drums in JKW and guitar in Wheadeater.. As
people have said before, he can definantly play the drums.. =] BUT, what
they haven't said is that he's also a pretty darn good singer..

Sat Nite show

1995-12-11 Thread Bob Reeves
Just to augment Jim's review of the show- other highlights include:

1) Jim's performance! He played a number of new songs which sounded
extremely well composed with some very intricate phrases and guitar riffs.
His original songwriting talents especially were on display during this
show (or maybe the intimate setting allowed the listener a better listen).
Regardless, I hope we can pester him enough to release something soon!

2) I learned I'm not coordinated enough to play drums and make mean faces
at Katrina at the same time.

3) After some drunk guy came in off the street and decided to play drums
while Gordon (Preppy Relatives) was playing his songs, Warren (ex-drummer
of PrepRel) walks in with a big smile on his face and shaking his head. I
always knew he had perfect timing.

4) Besides 3), Gordon's performance was pretty damn amazing! I guess I
never realized what sharp lyrical abilities Gordon posesses until this show
(usually because I always constantly watched Warren during the PR shows).
I'm glad he ditched his original 2-chord/15 min. composition idea in favour
of playing his old tunes. He rates in my book of the top 5 Halifax
songwriters.

5) Jim's Birthday cake that Katrina made! Yum! Yum! The smartest move you
could make in 1996 is to ensure Katrina knows when your birthday is!

my turn!! :) sfz, al tuck review..

1995-12-09 Thread sizzle teen
let us ignore the fact that i just failed a final exam...

i went to see the super friendz and al tuck at the volcano club in
kitchener just like a whole bunch of other people on this list. the only
difference -- i was hanging out at the club for a total of *6* hours...
but that's another story.

since i haven't heard anything about the whole crew getting their
stomachs pumped, it is safe to say that the cupcakes i made were fine :)

al tuck was *great* :) his music sounded really classic, like his songs
have always been around and have stood the test of time. i really fell
in love with his music that night.. of course, being the moron i am, i
forgot to buy a cd... really great songs, and he played budda just for
me ;) (hey, a girl can dream, can't she?) actually, before playing the
song, he explained that they play budda but some nights they don't
really feel like playing it unless someone requests it, so he asked for a
request, and i put up my hand and requested it [note: i was sitting
right up front, half on the stage, trying to hide behind the speaker].
but the highlight was can i count on you (?), which was just him and
his guitar, and it was totally beautiful. i think i'm in love..

the super friendz... what more can be said? they sounded great, and were
all really active. and i have to admit, lonnie is an awesome drummer and
kicks t.c.'s ass! i kinda requested undertow before the show, (which they
played, of course), but for the sole reason to hear the correct lyrics.
i wasn't disappointed :) television, up and running, and green
hands were totally awesome, and i can't wait to hear those songs
recorded. for the encore, i think matt came *very* close to do some
l'il orton.. ;)

here's something interesting.. copies of the first pressing of the _by
request_ 7 (with the green sleeve) were left at the volcano from some
previous show, so 8 copies were for sale.

umm.. oh, charles said that they'll be releasing a single on genius
records :) ...er, :( since i still don't have a turntable.. (dear
santa..) and add me to the list of al tuck fans :)

p.s. i got al to guess my age, and he said 23!

sf theme song

1995-12-08 Thread The Godfather

Ok, since nobody cared to respond to my question about The superfriendz
theme song, I decided to ask Drew at the Volcano last night.

The Creation of the SuperFriendz Theme Song:

This unamed song stared out as a joke, it just a basic 12 bar blues riff
that gets the crowd hoppin. The boys started to jam on it after a certain
show(I forget which one) and it was pretty much a keeper after that.

Further along the road, the song kept developing to a point where
it was just an excuse for Matt to start wailing on his guitar. The group
kept playing it after every show, alomost like an anthem before a hockey
game exept different. Hence the creation of The SuperFriendz theme song.

1995-12-08 Thread Warren Rodericks
Wow, Talk about wicked :)

Last night, The Superfreindz, Al Tuck et all, and Shortfall played the
Volcano. It was the best show I've seen here all term...

First let me say that attendance was pretty minimal, which is OK by my
selfish standards but it would have been nice to see a bigger draw for
the bands' sake.

Shortfall-Lowest of the Low meets the Doughboys ;) These guys were
really, REALLY tight. Much better than the last time I saw them. I don't
think many people had heard of them before but I think they won the
crowd over pretty good.

Al Tuck - light-hearted, innocent, unpretentious...these guys are so
wicked. I can't believe how different they are from when I first saw them
over a year ago. Chuck from sfz picked up an axe and joined in for a rendition
of Mr. Fixit, which was hugely ironic becasue then the guitar stopped
working, and Clive came out and threw fit on stage because his guitar was
f**ked and he kicked over his amp and stuff. Al finished the set playing
solo. I guess that makes me Al Tuck fan #6? (was there ever any doubt? :)

Sfz- Well, what can I say, they were the Sfz, pure and simple. Matt was
doing all the usual stuff, hopping on drums and doing kicks and stuff
like that. It was nice to see them headling for a change though.

Anyway, I think I seriously incriminated myself last night. I walked up
to carol and Matt and, as per my usual courteous self, barged in on their
conversation. They were talking about if you could be anybody for a day,
who would it be. Well Matt asked me who I would be, and I said..well..I
guess you'll have to check out 'In The Meantime' #3 because carol was
taping the whole thing (I didn't notice the recorder in her hands until
it was too late)

Oh well, c'est ca :)

superfriendz conquer the USA

1995-12-07 Thread Kelly A. Ruberto

on wednesday the superfriendz played their first show ever
int the USA. they played in buffalo, new york. earlier in the
day they played an in and then later that night was the
big show. the venue they played in was not really meant for
live shows. the stage was temporary and really unstable. they
probably put it together in about five minutes. there was a
rented p.a. system and no monitors for the guys. but the
superfriendz still rawked! matt was especially energetic and
nutty. the stage was set up really weird and lonnie and his
drums were up on balcony next to the stage. even faced with
all these strange conditions, the superfriendz were able to
deliver a great show. they even played some rare ones including
a boots and some cover song.
catch them friday at the rivoli in toronto with al tuck and
the sadies.

I thought they stole it from Waylon Jennings who stole it from Van Halen.

Don't they get shit on for copyright reasons? I mean, if you stuffed your
band's logo into the shape of a Coke bottle you'd never get on a major
label because Coke would sue the pants off you the moment the record hit
gold.

TH's John Boomer-Star Wars logo and the Smart Bomb Atari cartridge were
both funny and made sense because the logo tied in with the title and
were nods to the early-80's pop culture that seems to have been quite an
influence on them. Nobody was expecting big sales so no worry of George
Lucas knocking on the door at Ravenrock Lane. Compare that to Merge's
knockoff Irving Oil logo which must have been a nod to the coolness of
wearing gas jockey shirts, and was kinda risky considering it's a local
company.

But I'm still talking about locals here, can a major seller get away
with it nationally? More examples?

Next thing James, Jim and Tara will design a Monkees-inspired logo for
their label! (I'm hoping there isn't one)

I know you got the shirts so we'll see them by Xmas, I'm not asking!

only are the songs bad, but the titles rae the cheesiest: Back on track,
Blue streak, depite 1 and 2, storm, sorry sentimental, your band SUX, so shy,

the scoop on sloan

1995-12-06 Thread Tim McAuliffe
Hey, you wacky kids!

I have been informed that the upcoming release from Sloan will not be of
the musical nature, though it will have some music on it. The new
release is actually a project that Chris and Jay thought up over nine
years ago, when the two were freshmen in senior high. In school Chris was
super piopular while Jay was not, in fact, the two met when Chris was
beating up a friend of Jay's. Jay started to cry which made Chris feel a
bit guilty. It was then that Chris decided to take Jay under his wing and
motivate him to be cooler. After teaching him how to bong, how to tape
the back of his baseball cap, and how to secure his coffee thermos to the
back of his Mountain Gear knapsack; Jay was ready to hang with the in
crowd. Chris figured that he could motivate others much the same way he
motivated Jay, so he decided to record a series of motivational cassettes.
The tapes have a simple and easy to follow format, with Chris discussing
the benefits of a confident personality and a friendly demeanor. Jay
sings a couple of short songs about his growth from a ninth grade nerd to
a tenth grade jock. One of the songs is rather emotional, it deals with
the emotional hardship Jay felt when he had to give a wedgie to one of his
former nerd friends. All in all, a great release from the boys in the
maritimes.

sincerely,

Strawberry shortcake

1995-12-06 Thread Matt Hennessey

Hey folks, this is Matt from Charlottetown. It's been about
a week since I have written about a Charlie town band, but you're in
for a treat as far as I'm concerned.
Strawberry, the Island's best band started off three years
ago with an interesting mix of players. Pat and Deirdre, guitarist
and vocalist respectively, along with Craig (percussion) who is I
believe Chris Murphy's cousin, and Mike who played the typical
drumset. Pat and Deirdre are the only founding members left.
Anyhoo, their first gig ever was in front of hundreds of
people at our annual Canada Day festival in Victoria park, most
thought they really sucked because they didn't jam out any Guns and
Roses (though Pat is a huge G'n'R fan). And the fact that they
played all their own songs had a very divisive effect. I thought it
was cool what they were doing but also saw the room for improvement.
Contrary to popular belief, Strawberry didn't really become
an overnight success here in Charlottetown. Of course all the cover
bands and Haywire wannabes were still around, actually they still are
around. Still, Strawberry along with Stil and Down formed the
underground scene, more or less.
Strawberry then got the chance to record a 7 split single
with Plumtree. It wasn't exactly the way they planned on recording
but they were happy nonetheless. The next time someone sees Pat
tease him about his bass playing but don't tell him I said so.
Scott (guitar) and Brian (bass) joined after Craig left the
band and finally their sound was shaping up into a strong rythym
oriented band in which they wanted. They released a demo by
themselves in May or June of this year and is utterly amazing
considering it is done on 8 track. They actually relaesed a tape
before that but it is not quite as musically strong.
Simon then replaced Mike as the drummer to form the present
group of Strawberry. They have finished recording their CD I think
but I don''t know when they plan to release it. One piece of advice,
pick it up, they are incredible.
\ Some people may have saw them previous to this past Halifax
Pop Explosion and may not have liked them very much, or so I've
heard, but let me assure you, they are a totally changed band with
all the ingredients that holds Strawberry together still present.
Now here are some helpful little tidbits to break the ice to
the guys/gal if you ever see them.

Pat - bowls 250, loves movies, especially Clerks and Dazed
and Confused, he is nice as hell and will jam with anyone who knows a
few Motley Crue tunes.
Deirdre - is obsessed with Bob Wiseman, hates Dynasty and
jocks, plus is an avid indie advocate and anti christ to any cover
band, she's real smart and a pleasant lady to talk to.
Simon - what can I say, the guys got a clock in his head and
a smile on his face the whole time, friendly and helpful, he lives on
Harley street and is a self professed preppy, plus the oldes member
at 25.
Scott - loves to make posters, they are infamous around the
Island, and stickers and what not, used to play clarinet in high
school (as did I) and shines while singing and playing his Gibson SG
for the guys from Strawberry's alter ego side band Good Guy Eddie
Featuring Former Members Of Chilliwack (Pat's the only member to
actually play for Chilliwack...just kidding).
Brian - that groovin' bass player is one of the funniest guys
I know, loves crack (inside joke) and telling people that he was
not the bass player for the Me 7 single, yet another joke poking fun
at Pat.
So there you go folks, as usual any questions just let your
fingers do the talking.

Matt

1995-12-06 Thread Paul Landry
I don't know, call me sensitive but I found this whole Sloan album
rumour to be pretty stupid (I did fall for it *blush*). I mean I
went out to New Minas (not just cause it rhymes) and asked the sales
clerks if they had it and stuff and they looked at me like I was
crazy. I also am the only Acadia student on the Sloan net so I felt
somewhat responsible for informing all the Sloan fans around here
about the (then existent to me) album.
Yeah, the rumour spread and for a while everyone was happy. Then
I found out it was all a hoax and felt pretty stupid. Not because I
fell for this little joke, because to call something a joke I must
find it funny. I don't know about you guys but you know I would kind
of like to have another Sloan album in my collection and was giddy to
the point of hugging people I hardly knew in the light of the news.
Call me bitter about the whole thing and if you're gonna partake
in something like this again how about not emailing me about it, just
email Deryl or something.

Gonna go drown my sorrows in draftily yours,

ps. If you're gonna cut me up over this try to do it well, ie. Mr.

Sloan joke

1995-12-05 Thread Matt Hennessey
Hi this is Matt from P.E.I.
Umm...I know you guys will probably hate me but I have to
bring up that Sloan hoax thing up just so I can tell you a story that
happened to me today.
One of my friends from Summerside (1 hour away from
Charlottetown) skipped school to come and visit for a little while.
Anyway, the first question that popped out of his mouth was Where
can I find the new sloan album shaken by...I dunno something.
Imagine my surprise to hear those words come out of his mouth. I
then asked him where he heard that and he said it was all over
Charlottetown.
This proves how quickly rumours get started, yes I was one of
those suckers who believed it (hey I'm from a small city sitting in
an Island) and I did tell one of my friends. The fact is there is
only, correct me if I'm wrong, five sloan netters here on p.e.i. And
I know Melissa and Karen caught on right away, I'm not sure of Mark
from Summerside, and Deryl has no friends to tell...just kidding
Deryl. So that left me...by telling one person this little thing it
spread like wildfire.
Brenden, this has been real fun during exam time, but now
look what you have done to me. I'll have to walk all over
Charlottetown putting up posters or something saying THERE IS NO NEW
SLOAN ALBUM.
That's the price of being a sucker I guess.
And oh yeah, I think RADIOBLASTER rawk and I hear no
similarities with the Hermits.
Thanx for reading this otherwise useless post.

Matt.

this might cause some people to think before they post, it would

i've seen/heard of his idea being implemented on some other high traffic
(and i mean high traffic lists, like the 250 msg a day punk list) lists,
and sloan net is NOT high traffic at all, so maybe it might be too much,
i don't know. but maybe people would start to listen to those rules of
sloan net that james sends new subscribers, like reading all of your mail
before you respond to something, and hen maybe including several points
in one interesting post, instead of four really dumb ones?

anyhoo, this will only work if james actually unsubs offenders, otherwise
it'll be back to the same old say mould in no time.

just a thought.

mc

ps - oh, and to deryl, if you don't think people jump on my ass, you
really haven't been around here very long - and the difference between
your random acts of senseless profanity and what i do is the fct that i
actually try (i don't always suceed) to make some sort of point that is
grounded in the temporal plane with what i write. there is a difference
between whining and criticism.
gordon, ned and tyler are three good friends of mine and i think
that preppy relatives are one of the best bands in this town - my post
was merely to express my bewilderment at what is to come. for fans of
PR, this will be a very different show indeed.

pps - i think the nutty chuckleheads is a good band name as well.

sounds to me more like zombies oriented. like a zumpano thing or

Birthday!

1995-12-05 Thread Andrew P. Rodenhiser
A happy 28th birthday to some other guy named Andrew, who is a year and a
day older than me and used to play drums in a certain local band which is
defunct and does not have a new album coming out.

Peace to all (especially that Deryl guy!)

1995-12-05 Thread murderecords
Hey,

What's happening ? I have been meaning to do this for a while but
I you know how it goes. Anyway there is this magazine called
Broken Pencil out of Toronto and they review zines and stuff so
everyone one here that does one should send theirs in so it can be
reviewed / acknowledged. Their address is:

Broken Pencil
PO Box 203, Station P
Toronto, Ontario.
M5S 2S7

In the little blurb they ask to include the name of the publisher,
classification (rock, dishwashing, etc.), main creators, price and
address, all in that order.

Hopefully everyone will send in their stuff don't forget that you
can also send suff to the Zine of Zines, Factsheet 5 and their URL
is - http://kzsu.stanford.edu/uwi/f5e/f5e.html . Check that out for
more info.

By the way, I'm totally sorry if someone has posted such
information already. Talk to you later.

fuck radioblaster!

1995-12-04 Thread Derek Tokar - PHAS/F93

FROM THE LOVABLE RIPOFF ARTIST, Mr. UNORIGINAL HIMSELF... DEREK (from RB):
First of all, I fuckin hope Catano was joking in all of his bitterness,
if not he can bite my ass. Secondly, I'm going to tell you all what
Radioblaster is all about.

1) I had no idea that Mudhoney had similar Big Muff shirts until
somebody told Maritess ( our guitarist) that last week.
WE PURPOSELY SKIPPED THE WHOLE RIPOFF LOGO CRAZE OF A COUPLE OF YEARS BACK.

2)We took the name radioblaster because Maritess's Supa Fuzz (yes the
original) pedal picked up serious radio signals, so since we had our
first gig like one week later and we needed a name, we figured something
to do with 'radio' would be cool, sort of as a gimmick.
Thus radioblaster seemed reasonable at the time and we were too lazy to
change it. Plus, at the time we were pretty good friends with TH
considering Maritess was going out with Ian and the band along with
Stinkin' Rich etc. would stay at Dave and Mari's house in Toronto for
two weeks at a time while they were touring.

3) We do not worship Thrush Hermit in any way, we do not wish to be from
the east coast and we are only approximately 3 years older than TH.
(other than Cliff who is older than us.)

4) WE SOUND NOTHING like TH and in no way do we aspire to sound like
them or sloan or superfriendz. If there was one east coast band we ever
wanted to resemble it was eric's trip.
But truly we TRY NOT to sound like ANYONE and I'm quite sure we sound
LIKE NO ONE.

You be the judge.
ANY QUESTIONS OR COMMENTS ARE WELCOME.

derek. (what a biter, man!)

andrew scott speaks out!

1995-12-04 Thread James R. Covey
for those of you who haven't figured it out
by now, brendan's post about the new sloan album
and subsequent posts by various smartasses, it's
all a *joke*!! there's no new sloan album.

however, the following is actually for real --
back at pop explosion time i invited questions
for andrew scott from sloan net, and promised
to post the answers. apologies to carol --
i didn't get the answers to your questions on
tape thanks to a minor technical difficulty.
but i'll email you seperately with my best
attempt at remembering his answers... which
probably won't be any good for your zine...

From: John [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have a question. who IS Andrew Scott?

AS: Andrew Scott is a 27-year-old man. I'm not a kid anymore,
I'm not a teenager. I never tried to think that I was. And
I'm just a guy struggling day to day to live my life the best
way I can. And goddammit, it's hard.

[JC: Andrew Scott is the drummer for Sloan and a founding member
of the Maker's Mark. That is all ye ever need know. :-) ]

From: Brendan Ryan [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Well the one thing I have often wondered about him is..
Does he realize that he has the reputation of being
almost unaproachable? and is this something that he
perpetuates so people won't hang off of him like they
do Chris and Jay?

AS: I'll tell you, that reputation is the direct result of Chris Murphy.
He's never taken one step back from promoting me as this ultracool,
ultra-unapproachable Fonz character. But Chris' interpretation of me
is quite warped through his own interpretation of himself. God love
Chris Murphy. I love Chris, you know, I've known him for years, but he
has an incredible talent for trying to deflect a lot of stuff of himself
onto other people. Not necessarily maliciously, but it's just the way
he is. Maybe I am unapproachable. I don't know, I've never gotten mad
at anybody for coming up and talking to me. But, you know, I'm not really
one to go looking for people who listen to the band I'm in to come and
talk to me. Like if you want to come and talk to me, that's up to you.
If you think i'm unapproachable, then take your chances or don't take your
chances. But, don't believe everything you hear. I'm actually quite a
nice guy.

From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] (D'Arcy Flueck)

as to questions for andrew scott, you can ask him why he's so
dogmatic, why he always runs away and stuff. (i guess that's mean),
but you could ask him if he likes his fans? and you could ask him
why he thinks sloan is in the hearts of every kid (and big kid) in
canada? if he has a big theory (like they've put special subliminal
messages hidden in their music or something ;))

AS: I don't even know what dogmatic means. Holding on to some kind of
ultra-truth or something?

JC: Really insistent on your own opinions.

AS: Yeah, I'm very opinionated. And I'm not swayed if I offend
anybody. If you want to hear my opinion I'm going to say what I feel.
I think everybody should say what they feel. But you've got to back up
what you say. And I'll do my damnedest to back up whatever I say. I
guess I am dogmatic, yeah. (I love dogs!)

I have no idea why we're so popular with Canadian kids, as opposed to
Chinese kids or Russian kids. Maybe it's because we're from Canada, and
Canada in a larger sense has always held onto its own. Not that we've
ever tried to portray ourselves as this flagship for Canadian music in
any sense, because to a large degree I've always been quite disappointed
with a lot of Canadian music and how it's promoted and how it's made and
how it's chosen to be put out over a lot of other things. But hopefully,
since the time we've started releasing records in Canada, I think a hell
of a lot has changed in terms of where people look for music. And now
it's to a point where Canada doesn't have to settle for the Tom Cochranes
or the Alannah Myles, who is a complete egotistical terrible artist. I
cannot understand Alannah Myles whatsoever. That article about her in the
Globe and Mail... It was like a half-page article of her just talking
about how good she is. It was gag-inducing. I guess Canadian kids have
good taste. I hope. If that means we're any good.

From: Katrina Grentz [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have a question for andrew scott...i challenge you to ask
him what he was like in high school b/c *i know* have yearbook
pics to prove it (he was kind of a preppy)...

AS: *Incredibly* preppy. I'm already leaning back towards the preppy
look. I think preppy is good and everybody should embrace it. I was
kind of a preppy jock punk metal guy. I always had such a giant
identity crisis in high school. I didn't know what I'd do. I hung
around with all the black dudes that played basketball. I played
basketball, but I drove a skateboard and listened to really bad hardcore
records in high school. So
