Re: [videoblogging] Re: Vlog with html links?
Yeah I love the eZedia program, I use it for all my videos. The end of my videos has a single frame with my logo, url, cc license info, and a comment button. Each is clickable and takes you to the appropriate place. The demo can do up to 5 items on a frame. I think my frame has 6 itmes :-P It's a cool little app and worth the purchase price if you ask me. I have all sorts of incoming ports open to my network. My ISP at least is pretty good about that. Re: [videoblogging] Just before you start belitting me again.
And being Arrogant and cocky to people from anywhere other than the US, even though it is meant in a joke is seen as in very bad taste. ... I personally, don't see Americans as being that arrogant, I kinda understand the sense of humor. Is it somehow in good taste to be arrogant and cocky to people from the US? Are Americans just not as deserving of good manners? Besides ... did I miss the thread here where some American went all Fuck the rest of the world on us? What are we talking about here? ... serously? Western Foreign policy dictates that if you are not with us, you are against us. Will being arrogant and cocky to actual Americans somehow alter some aspect of US foreign policy? Wouldn't it be wiser to have a discussion about actual issues rather than just lob a bunch of insults and see what happens? I mean ... make a video speaking to the US Administration about WHY those things are thought (or better yet make a video for 10 Downing ... Lord knows there's plenty of issues in need of addressing there) ... at least then you're addressing a problem and not bashing an entire nation. The general American (or human being for that matter) would far more likely take that to heart than a stream of insults. two a state of play as what the world outside of the United States regards all Americans as. Maybe that's part of the problem ... How are we supposed to react to something meant to relate a stereotype? Is it supposed to help us somehow? If I were to make a video of someone wearing the union jack, bad teeth, playing croquet, sipping tea, and snubbing their nose at anyone not doing the same ... would this video be of any real use to you? You really think it would be valuable? Would is somehow help you eliminate that stereotype? ... or croquet? I mean what is it exactly your video is supposed to accomplish other than piss people off? a) We know the stereotype and its as frustrating as any other stereotype. b) We know the general opinion the world at large has of the US administration right now ... beating the we hate America horse isn't really speaking to the issues ... its certainly not going to bridge any gaps ... why bother with such a useless stream of generalizations? c) As for those arrogant Americans who don't care what the rest of the world things ... such a video is NOT going to convince them ... to start caring. so ... what is it really supposed to accomplish? ... serously? It is just the Corporations and Government, mind you as far as throwing stones when you have a glass house is concerned, the UK gov sucks too. So if we are going to be the fighting force better than the media as we now it today, maybe we need to be a little more listening to other people's point of view, instead of trashing anything that isn't American or British for that matter. I kinda wish you'd had that thought before you made that video, myself. ... Re: [videoblogging] Tracking the conversations, etc.
I was thinking about this lately too. Trackback is of course meant to help with this very issue ... but I admit I dont use trackbacks nearly as much as I should ... and I think alot of people dont.Tags are another part of it, as they often provide new entry points into the conversation, and can help you pick it back up after seeming dead-ends. There was a cool post on digg a while ago that pointed to a tag cloud for google news (http://fserb.com.br/newscloud/). The really cool thing was it would find related tags. Clicking on a tag would display a list of stories on that and related tags. It seemed to work really well. I was thinking how great it would be to have a system like that for videoblogs. Some system that would work off a list of feeds from the various directories we have now, and that could find tags and related tags ... and offer a list of videos. Sort of like a parent cloud for the vlogsphere. - Dave-- http://www.DavidMeade.comfeed:http://www.DavidMeade.com/feed SPONSORED LINKS Fireant Individual Typepad Use Explains YAHOO! Re: You can't save Internet Freedom by taking it away [was: Re: [videoblogging] Re: Lobbyists Trying to Destroy Internet Freedom?]
Charles the Bill of Rights isn't about government self regulation really. It has wording such as congress shall pass no law that ... but its REALLY about setting the legal edicts that guide the country. I'm not allowed to take action that would hinder your right to free speech anymore than congress is. Net Neutrality may have words like Providers may not... but its similarly not about regulation but a statement that ensures the rights of the people cannot be subverted in this new medium. Comparing Net Neutrality to The Patriot Act is SO not far ... the Patriot Act removed certain safeguards on liberty in the name of security. Net Neutrality seeks to safeguard the liberties we have been enjoying since the very beginning. They are not in anyway similar. Again, its this very sort of confusion the AstroTurf programs are trying to create ... don't fall for it. There are laws out there that say things like (I'll paraphrase) people may not go about killing scores of other people for no good reason I guess you could call that regulation ... I guess. I might call it a law to protect the best interest of The People. SPONSORED LINKS Fireant Individual Typepad Use Explains YAHOO! GROUPS LINKS Visit your group "videoblogging" on the web. On 5/18/06, Charles Iliya Krempeaux [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Hello,I guess what I'm trying to say is that there must be a better way to stop a Tiered Internet (than having governments regulate it).well again, its not that they are regulating it with net neutrality, they are only saying you can't squash people rights just because this is the internet and not a paper publication. Let's get rid of the laws that prevent cities from setting up free wireless networks. Firstly, this is would serve little value. Those wireless networks would still need to cross the backbone for internet access. Thus they'd still be at the whim of the telco cartels. Secondly, those laws are meant to protect telcos not harm them (ensuring The State can't cheat them out of business) ... it seems contrary to the idea of getting government out of the telco's way. Do the phone and cable companies have government granted monopolies?... let's get the government to take those monopolies away. They did that once already when they split ATT into the bells ... and now here we are again seeing ATT and the Bells try to get that monopoly back. Help create grassroots (Wi-Fi based) wireless networks. (There's probably one it your area you could join.) Again ... people would only use these wi-fi based systems if they were connected to the internet. And without network neutrality ISPs could easily ensure that these wi-fi systems were slower than postal mail (so that those users would instead buy their national wireless plans). This would not ease the need for network neutrality ... it speaks to the need for network neutrality. Maybe there will be motivation to create new broadband wireless technology (like WiMax but on unregulated bands) that will help form a new super high speed wireless Internet that will be formed by regular people, like today's free grassroots (Wi-Fi based) wireless networks. This is an awesome idea, one I've kicked around in my head (I even mentioned here as a 'what would we do if congress destroys the internet by not giving us net neutrality). But the problem here is that these wi-fi systems could never provide a wireless global backbone capable of creating an Internet without the large providers. The only way for that to happen is to get favorable frequency allocations from the FCC for long range consumer wireless data devices ... and that's not going to happen ... ever. A) the telcos wont allow it B) when the FCC grants such frequencies they are usually auctioned off (for numbers in the billions ... telcos can buy those ... not grass roots wi-fi advocates) C) even if A B could be overcome ... other countries would not have such frequency allocations. There simply isn't a way (currently or in the foreseeable future) to create a new world-wide user created internet without still needing access to the telco's backbone and without net neutrality the ISPs could easily make such a network so painful to use most would pay the additional cost for their service ... which would kill any such wi-fi system. ... and frankly why should we recreate the wheel simply because congress wont protect our rights in this new scary 'Internet' thing? Like I already said... I'm worried that people's fears about the Internet being Tiered will put in place laws for the Internet as bad or worse than the USA PATRIOT Act. And I'm worried that we'll loose much much more freedom by having laws put in place which are suppose to protect our freedom. The idea of net neutrality does not remove liberties the way the patriot act does. It insists that the freedoms we enjoy now should be protected by law. I understand your fear of the US Patriot Act ... but Net Neutrality is not in anyway similar. One removes safeguards in the name of paranoia ... one adds safeguards so that freedoms cannot be squashed by the wealthy powers that be. -- http://www.DavidMeade.comfeed:http://www.DavidMeade.com/feed SPONSORED LINKS Fireant Individual Typepad Use Explains YAHOO! Re: [videoblogging] help needed with spam identity theft !! (offtopic, but...)
There's actually a few things that could cause this ... but assuming it is in fact unauthorized use of your mail server there are a few things you should do:First off, make sure your mail server is not an open relay. An open relay is where a mail server will forward on email even when nither the recipient nor the sender are its local users. You'll have to read a bit on your mail server to see how to configure it properly. There are some webbased tools to test if your an open relay or not. (http://spamlinks.net/prevent-secure-relay-test.htm#web) 2nd, you should be able to setup your email server so that authentication is required to send email from it. This way the only people who can send email from your server are users who have a mail account on the server. Now, even if they forge the source address in an attempt to fool the 1st safeguard ... your server will additionaly insist they provide a username / password. (I dont know much about linux (or mail servers honestly) so I cant really provide much more detail than that)3rd, run a good Anti-virus sweep on all your machines. Some viruses will send mass mail with variants of your email address ... and often generate bounce messages. If its a virus, the problem may not be on your linux box but another on your lan. 4th, make sure you have a decent firewall in place After all thats said and done you should be ok. If you're still being blocked by spam services (because of past spam) you may need to send a request to some of the spam / open relay databases saying you've taken the above steps and ask to be removed. - DaveOn 5/18/06, Jen Simmons [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I seem to have a serious problem that needs some heavy duty geekadvice, so I ask forgiveness for this off-topic post. If this is what is happening there is one other thing you can do to help the situation ... you can implement Sender Policy Framework (SPF) on your domain ( http://new.openspf.org/Introduction). It's simple, and whoever manages your DNS servers should be able to set it up very quickly. It basically provides a way for your domain to tell the rest of the world look no matter what the email says, its only REALLY from my domain if it came from my mail server which has the following ip address. As long as you are not the open relay yourself ... this allows for the REAL email from your domain to be granted a higher level of trust by the systems that recieve it. While SPF will not prevent people from trying to spoof your domain in their emails ... it will make any such spoof easily recognizable as a spoof.- Dave-- http://www.DavidMeade.comfeed:http://www.DavidMeade.com/feed SPONSORED LINKS Fireant Individual Typepad Use Explains YAHOO! Re: [videoblogging] Creating groups in the iTunes directory (and beyond)
I like the idea ... but it does concern me somewhat that people could simply claim membership in a group and we'd all just have to live with the fact that they are lying and being listed in that group in the directories out there. I mean if the system lets me list myself with TWiT.TV: Leo Laporte and Friends ... and Leo has no way of disavowing me ... this is a system Leo Laporte is not going to use. Nor would many if not most of the channels out there that are trying to brand themselves. And if those groups wont use the system the masses wont either. What if in the RSS feed, rather than putting the name of the group you are in, you include a link to the group you are in. That link could point to a very simple xml file of members that the group owner manages. Something like group namemygroup/name descriptioncool group/description image/ websitemygroup.com/website feedmygroup.com/feed/feed member type=member|administrator|owner name/name website/website feed/feed /member /group Aggregators could then either just acccess/parse that list to see if the rss feed in question is in fact listed there. -- http://www.DavidMeade.comfeed: http://www.DavidMeade.com/feed SPONSORED LINKS Fireant Individual Typepad Use Explains YAHOO! I don't think we disagree. I think we're just looking at the same thing from two different sides of the same coin. :-Pclearly it was written to prevent government from squashing rights ... and so yes it details some things government cant do My point was only that it was written for the sake of the people ... not for the sake of the government. I guess I'm an optomist on this, but to my mind:*) A document that regulates how lobbiest can contribute to government and campaigns ... that's government regulation. *) A document meant to protect the rights of the people from government abuse of power ... that's government/legal framework. That doesnt make any sense. Charge me for the video I consume ... ok ... sucks but ok. If we let them create a system where content that is most favorable to their bottom line is the only content that can be easily accessed we let them create a system that WILL be abused by the wealthy powers that be. If we let them create a system where their politcal interests can be blocked/hindered ... they will use that system Its the difference of who is charged for what. I've got a few cool ideas in the back of my head on ways to consume a feed, but a few of them would work far better if I KNEW what image the blogger wanted to use to represent thier video/audio file. This varies a great deal from vlogger to vlogger. There's no rule except do what feels right for you. Some post daily, some once a week, some every other month. :-) I myself aim for 2-4 vlogs a month ... and if I go over great! Re: [videoblogging] New to this grop and this subject., with serveral questions
well ipods need to be mp4 or H.264 encoded quicktime (mov, mp4, or m4v). PSPs can play mp4s, but I dont think there is an mp4 compression setting that is both Ipod/PSP friendly ... not sure though. Of course, all the windows handheld devices out there can play windows media. If you're already producing WMVs and are up to offering more than one format, I'd suggest offering a version in an iPod compatible format. This a) gets you on the ipod and b) lets mac users who hate WMV play the Quicktime version instead. one thing to be careful about: Some of those converting tools that make quicktime movies, dont make them 'fast start' quicktime movies ... and thats kinda annoying. I am a windows person so .wmv or .avi is the most common format I deal with and I tend to gravitate toward .divx or xvid codec. But I do not know if ipods or other portable video players can read that format. I can convert if necessary. I have just about every conversion tool know to man. Thanks Yahoo! Can't be done in under two hours in most airports, in fact no airline will let you try. So, yes, it takes longer to get to Ohio. This is only true given the assumption there are no direct flights to a major city in Ohio. I did some searching and there are international flights directly into OH, and they're are roughly the same price as getting to california. Re: [videoblogging] vPIP 1.0 Beta now available !
wooo I can't wait to try it out! I'm not an HTML newbie, but prefer the auto-javascript rewrite idea because it will work on old posts without going back and editing them, and leaves 'pure' links should I move to a different system in the future. On 1/31/07, Enric [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This a major new release of vPIP. There's new features for people with different interests doing video on the web. Before that, vPIP now has it's own domain: http://vpip.org/ The old domain, http://utilities.cinegage.com/videos-playing-in-place/, informs of the changed domain. The documentation has been updated for the changes and a new page is available on using vPIP with Flash: http://vpip.org/home/playing-flash/ . Let me know of any errors in the docs. For HTML Newbies vPIP can now take all the a href=url to movie ../a links and make them work immediately with vPIP. The nmew script vpipit.js will do that. All the installation instructions for different web platforms include vpipit.js. With this you don't need to figure out how to call the vPIP function (onclick=vPIPPlay(...)) in the link. This is similar to how Andreas' and David Meade's scripts automatically embed. NOTE: The downside to this approach is that the web page needs to fully load before the script sets all a href= links that it sees pointing to movies to embed with vPIP. If a viewer clicks on a link before the page finishes loading it will just jump to the movie rather than embed through vPIP. So it's recommended to use the standard approach of calling vPIP, if you want your movies to consistantly embed. For Designers - You may now design the visual interface of the vPIP internal Flash player, cirneViewer.swf. The visual interface for buttons like Play, Pause, Rewind, etc. are loaded dynamically from an XML file when the player starts. You can specify a different XML file than the default that points to your own images for the visual interface. The information on the XML file tags and the controls they dress up is on the vPIP page for Flash: http://vpip.org/home/playing-flash/ An example of the default interface included is on this recent vlog entry of mine: http://tinyurl.com/38lwb5 or http://www.cirne.com/vlog/2006/11/30/carp-caviar-extracts-122/ For Programmers --- vPIP has been rewritten as object-oriented javascript. This should make it easier to extend and modify vPIP for your own purposes. This is a first pass, so furthe encapsulation may be useful. If you create a new capability that would be useful for others, please let me know so that I can look at including it in a future release. If you would like to be a co-developer of vPIP, let me know. I'm going to look at including it in a open source repository. More Flash Player Features -- Besides being able to dynamically load the visual interface, there are now two versions of the internal flash player. The smaller version is 320x300 in size and will be used if the video width is 320 or less. This is the default width and player. If the video is larger than 320 in width, it will use the 450x340 player. About vPIP -- vPIP (video Playing In Place) dynamically embeds a link video after the viewer clicks on the link. Web pages load quickly with just image and text links. Then when the viewer clicks one of the links, it's replaced with the video. Clicking on another link closes the prior video and opens the new one. The supported video (and audio) formats are: * Quicktime o .mov o .mp4 o .mp3 (audio) o .smi or .smil o .3gp * Windows Media o .avi o .wmv o .asf o .wma (audio) * Flash o .swf o .flv ;), Enric -===- http://www.cirne.com http://www.cinegage.com Yahoo! Re: [videoblogging] Re: videoronk our cc licences
Question for Blip: Somewhere in my blip profile I told it my itunes URL is http://www.davidmeade.com/itunes and this is the itunes URL that is shown on my 'show' page. Is there some reason my show page doesn't similarly use my feed URL (http://www.davidmeade.com/feed) that I've also specified? If THAT feed were scooped up and consumed from blip.tv the links sent along with my video would be pointing back to my website rather than blip - and I'd at least be getting my attribution. (I realize there are all sorts of other dynamic feeds on blip which this wouldn't account for ... but at least the show page could advertise a feed with producer controlled info in it?) I'm all about people consuming and sharing my feed where ever they please ... but I don't think I really like it when they consume and share other feeds that have my videos in it (because they often don't link back to me properly). -- http://www.DavidMeade.com

Re: [videoblogging] Hyperlinks in Video
Depends on the type of video file, but if you're using QuickTime, I recommend a lil program called eZediaQTI (http://www.ezedia.com/products/eZediaQTI/index.html) It lets you create nice looking links and buttons. There's a free demo version that has enough functionality for most simple uses. For an example check out my vlog (the link is at the end of the video and it takes users to the comments page for that video): http://www.davidmeade.com/ The catch here is that it only works in .MOV quicktime files. The way I do it is I create my vlog as usual, make the lil eZedia frame, paste it to the end of my vlog, and save as a self-contained movie file in quicktime pro. This gives me an ipod compatible/fast-start mov file with a hyperlink at the end to my website, the comment page for the video, and my cc license info. There are other ways to do the same thing, but I like the point/click nature of eZedia. Check out the tool, its pretty easy to use. If you decide to use eZedia and want more specific instructions for that app let me know. (I am not affiliated in anyway with eZedia ... I just use and like the app) - Dave On 4/2/07, Nick Schmidt [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Does anyone know how to hyperlink within a Video? Meaning: The outro of the video has a URL displayed. Re: [videoblogging] ClickTV Vlog, now I need RSS.
well assuming your publishing process doesnt have a built in process to create a feed for you. you can always use a separate tool to create one. The idea would be to use such a tool to update your rss feed xml file and then upload that new file to your web site. When people request your feed they'll get that new version (assuming you've been updating it) which would have all the new episodes listed. There a several tools to do that. A quick google search pointed me at: http://www.rss-info.com/en_rsseditor.html The downside is you have to manually update the RSS file each time you add a new episode to your website. Additionally, SplashCast is in development as a network and the model for how we sustain the service econmomically is one that we are discussing in the broader market. But how to sustain the business? This will largely depend on the channel network that grows from SplashCast. How that channel network develops will depend on the relationshps we build with media producers and how they see the platform as a mechanism for helping sustain their livelihood. Additionally, the new feature allows people make their own personal channels that they can display on their personal start page or aggregator of choice. The result is a new way for podcasters to distribute their shows. It is important for us that we keep an open dialogue with podcasters and vloggers about the features we are adding and how the service will be improved in the future for any podcaster, be they producing audio or video programs. If I understand Splashcast correctly...here would be my worry. a user goes to your site and creates a channel. they choose a bunch of videos that they didnt make. This channel can then be displayed on their site as a Streaming video widget. The user then puts advertising all over and around the videos. No money, attribution, or anything is shared with the original creators even if there are clear CC licenses defining the use. I know Magnify.net is already doing thisand seems to cut the creators out of the equation. how will Splashcast handle this situation, if ive described it correctly. From what I recall ... it's not vegas' fault but Quicktime's. There is something about the Windows Quicktime API that is not exposed to windows applications (not even if you have QT Pro installed). I'm pretty sure its the AAC audio codec. Basically windows applications cant request the AAC codec be used via the QT API. You can use all sorts of other QT stuff ... but cant do ipod formatted video without QT Pro ... because on a windows box only QT pro is going to be able to access the parts of QT for Windows that allows for AAC audio compression. ... poorly described ... but the bottom line is that in windows you need QT Pro, and you have to actually use it (not some other app) to do the final compression. -- http://www.DavidMeade.com

In any case, I as the content owner would have to know about them, and their specific name to exclude them. And writing and posting a robots.txt file is not available to people who do not manage their hosting or domains, as you indicated. Well you can disallow based on user-agent, and I think most spiders are identifiable in this way. The HUGE advantage to the content owner of using robots.txt is that it allows us to maintain a pro-active opt-in or opt-out rather than a reactive having to create an account at every aggregator that ever comes into existence just to claim and then opt-out/in ... over and over and over again ... each time a new aggregator comes online. I think a better requirement for Aggregators might be use a unique and identifiable user-agent when crawling feeds, and honor robots.txt. I'd rather have that 'requirement' made to the Aggregator than forcing a requirement on Content producers to go and sign up at every single site to opt-out. It's also easier for the aggregator. Win-win! :-) Also ... its true that some folks might be using services that don't allow them to alter their robots.txt ... however I really think this is a simple feature we could convince Feedburner to implement in a very short amount of time (restriction based on user-agent). On 6/6/07, Steve Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: As for the robots.txt thing, Im not in favour of those sorts of technological measures. The bad guys can just ignore them, and sometimes they could backfire and punish innocent end users who may use some nonstandard client to watch feeds in future. I favour education, giving bad guys less way to claim ignorance about content licensing issues, and giving good guys the ability to judge our intentions via existing technology such as license information being contained within the RSS feed. Well I think you may be mixing two issues. robots.txt isn't meant to enable Media Aggregators (MA) enforcement of licenses. It's meant to enable the Content Owners (CO) to exclude any given MA from accessing the feed. (an opt-out action controlled by the CO rather than the MA) robots.txt wouldn't exclude innocents as it would be configured only to block specific bad actors. Also robots.txt is an 'existing technology' ... I think it pre-dates RSS. :-) Should we (COs) have to be expected to go and register a user account at each of these sites in order to opt-out? Besides being a PAIN IN THE @$$ ... it artificially inflates their 'registered user' stats. I'd much prefer not having to go and register an account over and over again at every single 'bad-actor' site that ever comes into existence. Sure 'bad actors' could ignore robots.txt ... but robots.txt has been around a long time and is already a best practice for spiders/crawlers ... if they are the type to ignore robots.txt they are likely the type to not care one lick what our best practices document says anyway. Remember ... these are things we would like to ask of MAs who want to do right by the COs. I think it's fair to say we'd like you to use a recognizable user-agent when spidering our feeds. Updating the user-agent is far far simpler for MAs than coding an opt-out ... but accomplishes a way for COs to prevent their feed from being used by that MA. (win for the MA) It also relieves the CO of having to register at every single video site that ever comes into existence (win for the CO). It also leverages existing technology best practices that the MAs (and most COs) are already leveraging to some degree. ... All that being said ... yes MAs definitely need to understand licensing and we should encourage their education. :-) - Dave -- http://www.DavidMeade.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]

On 6/6/07, Steve Watkins [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: My point about it potentially hampering end-users was wrong because Robots.txt is easy to ignore. I completely agree that opt-out sucks and people shouldnt be expected to have to do that, I just fear robots.txt is too easily ignored and so doesnt really solve the problem. True. It is easy to ignore ... but it's also easy to use and very commonly used already. If only MAs would identify themselves in the user-agent we could use this as a CO-owned opt-out mechanism. We can basically ask for them to do this, or ask for them to create a user-account based opt-out feature on their site. My instinct is that if our best practices document cant inspire an MA to bother to identify themselves in their user-agent ... it isn't going to inspire them to code up a whole user-opt-out feature. (setting your user-agent is REALLY easy to do). What I was thinking of that would potentially harm end users with unusual setups, would be attempts to do something equivalent to robots, but that is actually real enforcement, real technological measures that the outside party cannot ignore. Eg reconfiguring the webserver to block access from certain addresses or those using certain clients to read the feed. Yeah we want to avoid that sort of thing naturally. I think (Rox?) that this best practices document is a sort of guidelines for parties that want to get along. So yes I agree that we don't want to define some sort of technical blocking or enforcement scheme ... but rather offer guidelines to the parties that say here's how we can best get along. Asking MAs to identify themselves in user-agents and respect robots.txt is merely asking them to abide by best practices that honestly have already been in place. And I believe most feed spiders do have the functionality if not the practice of honoring robots.txt. To me it seems the mutually-least-painful option. For MAs it should be REALLY easy to comply with and for COs it prevents us from having to use the system we dislike in order to opt-out (each and every time another one comes around). So that stuff pushes me back towards technology that MAs can ignore, but good ones will hopefully read. And I much prefer stuff in the RSS feed than the robots idea. Yeah, but again now we're getting into licensing rather than opt-out. I agree that there should totally be an expectation to read and honor the license information in the RSS feed. But site-based opt-out cant really happen in the feed. When I say its existing technology, I meant its v.likely that these MA sites are already reading your feed. Wheras its unlikely they read your robots.txt, because they arent generally getting your content that way. Hmm. Are you sure? I thought most of them operated as a spider ... and most of those now-a-days have robots.txt check out-of-the-box. In anycase it would be very simple to implement. I have been disappointed to date with how many companies bother to read do something with the creative commons or copyrigt license info that can be put into RSS feeds. But the battle must be to improve this, I think theres more chance of it than getting them to go to the sites read robots files, and which site should they go to anyway - the site that hosts the blog or the site that hosts the video, if different? Yeah ... but I'm not sure the robots.txt file can really help in the how do we get people to respect our license discussion .. thats different than just how can we ensure COs can opt-out from any given site. [videoblogging] FCE question...
ok so I have a mac now and am learning Final Cut Express (FCE). Overall its similar to how I would be using Premier Elements on the PC, however there is one big problem with FCE and I'm hoping someone here can offer a solution. Note: I also got the One To One training thing from the apple store, and have at one such session asked about this. The guy - although he did try admirably to find a way to do it - ended up saying well I guess you can only do that in Final Cut Pro (FCP). Here's the thing ... In FCE, you have these easy setup options. They setup the project with settings such as: 720x480 NTSC. In FCP, you can apparently create your own custom setup profiles. In FCE ... I can't find a way to do that. My digital still camera saves to 320x240 (square pixel). I'd like to find a way to setup the FCE project/workspace for these settings as needed. Isn't there a way to tell FCE, that I'm working on a 320x240 project?! I hope I dont have to spend $1300 just for the ability to set the size of my videos ... that's just crazy talk ... surely apple/mac doesn't claim the creative higher ground if this is the case. Thanks in advance, - Dave -- http://www.DavidMeade.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Re: [videoblogging] FCE question...
Well I can compress it down to whatever I want. The final steps and final output arent a problem ... I just want to set the frame size of the project before I start so that I dont have to resize/distort the source material just to then export it down at its original size. I just can't believe that setting the frame size of a project is a pro feature. I mean ... that's SERIOUSLY messed up. A $300 editor should be able to set the frame size for Pete's sake. rant sigh ... Premier elements is 1/3rd the cost it can set frame size. I also played with LiveType some this weekend ... and while it is a very cool/powerful application the workflow to actually use it is MUCH more painful than adding a key-frame-able title in Premier elements. LiveType may be able to do more, but if you want just a title you can animate/fade/etc ... its just way more difficult than it should be IMHO. Anyway ... don't believe the hype that creative things are SO much easier and more intuitive on a Mac. :P I'm gonna have to consider now a crazy-expensive editor ... just so that I can set a frame size. Pppht. I wonder if apple knows there are new mac users who are finding its actually easier to just go back to the PC in order to create their movies. /rant On 7/2/07, randulo [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This is a PITA, but with an added step in the workflow (the last step, usually), you can use a format converter to adjust the size. So as long as your m4v/mp4 was ipod compatible, the mov will be too. Doing it that way keeps things simple if you already have an encoding method that is ipod compatible. Yup that's what I've been doing. The cool thing is you can then also have interactive sprite tracks on the .MOV too. The sprite tracks wont sync up to the ipod, but the video/audio will. That way you have an online/interactive MOV that still syncs up for offline viewing to the ipod just fine. - Dave -- http://www.DavidMeade.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Re: [videoblogging] Lies, Damned Lies And Statistics
I've been vlogging for over two years now, and I don't have a big following. There were some people at pixelodeon who were kind enough to pretend they'd heard of me though, and that's good enough for me - Casey McKinnon talked to me ... vlogging mission accomplished. :-) For the record, feed burner tells me that my for all time average is 62 subscribers ... 12 are from MeFeedia, and at least 3-5 total are probably me. :-) (one on my PC, one on my Mac, ... etc) My 'Reach' according to Feedburner (subscribers that area actually clicking on the links and what not) is on average 18 or so which (given that 3-5 are probably me) feels about right. (For the past 4 months of data), Blip tells me I have 62 posts with 39,320 views ... but I'm not sure I believe it. According to Blip, my most popular video is apparently Hawaiian Shave Ice (http://www.davidmeade.com/archives/58) with over 6,200 views ... but I didn't think it was all that special ... I'm tempted to believe something is off with those stats. (but why look a gift-horse-ego-boost in the mouth?) I apparently - according to blip - have: 6 other posts with 1,000 views (and I think I believe that - but not sure) 5 others between 900 - 1000 views 12 between 600-900 views 15 between 400-600 views 8 between 200-400 views 14 with 200 views ... but again this is over a very long period of time and is no doubt at least somewhat inflated by my being 'self subscribed'. (I also have a nasty habit of watching my own videos on my website rather than from the local copy ... so some of those blip views are me too). also ... my early work was all WMV, so I'm wondering if there isn't some inflated numbers due to the initial wonkyness of microsoft bits clients messin' up the stats everywhere. I have 19 friends on MeFeedia, 11 of which have returned the favor. I think I value comments the most. I don't get alot of comments on my stuff ... but I'm pretty bad about commenting on other blogs, so I try to be forgiving of that. I try not to look at stats too often because a) Half the time I don't believe them b) I've always loved the 'that stuff doesn't matter' aspect of long-tail publishing. c) When I allow myself to care about stats I tend to think of them as 'ratings' and that's both depressing and discouraging. It tends to inspire my making FEWER videos for fear I wont or cant do them well enough. d) Casey McKinnon pretended to know me, so I've pretty much already succeeded. ... I am however gettin' ready to start a new vlog, and I expect to have HUGE numbers on that one. :-P - Dave On 7/5/07, Rupert [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I'm on a roll, today. I'd like to suggest that more of us should try to be open about how many views we get. I mean, not *all* of us, obviously. There are those of us who won't want to say for commercial or other reasons. But I keep hearing people worrying about how few views they're getting. And I'm sure that part of their worry is that other people are getting far more. And I'm not sure that that's true. I'd bet any money that 99% of the people on this list get two figure views for all their videos combined per day. And I'd bet the majority get single figure views per day. This is important in the discussion of monetizing videoblogging, too, perhaps. I think Youtube has distorted expectations - by its nature, it attracts clusters of people to feast on certain featured popular videos in a way that's quite different to what a lot of us are doing. And as Mark Day said last week, even on Youtube the really big view numbers are rare. Personally, I don't think that getting just a few people per day or per week is bad at all. Your films are still being seen by more people than they would if you were taking them to a local film night, or showing them in a local gallery, which was the only forum for them before the web. And you're actually connecting with the people who are watching them, in a way that wouldn't happen otherwise. And probably in a more profound way than you would if you had 1000 people all wanting to talk to you. You don't have to join in this game - it's not Truth or Dare! - but to get the ball rolling, here are my own stats. They're a bit weird compared to most, probably, because I only started Twittervlog 3 months ago, I've made 89 videos in that time and I pimp it all the time on Twitter - that must be where I get most of my views. I feel it's been successful on a personal level - I've met all sorts of great people and it's been a lot of fun. But featured status on Youtube - or even on Blip - it ain't. I have posted 89 films. With 14,000 views in total. That's an average of 150 per film. I figure - what? - half of those have actually watched the video to the end? 25 videos ( a third of them) have less than 100 views in total another 57 videos (almost two thirds) have between 100 and 250 and only 7 have more than 250 - all of these have been

Great stuff everyone, thanks! The new CG65 sounds interesting. I'm not sure I need the HD ... I'll be compressing down for the web anyway ... HD may be overkill? Plus the smaller size of the CG65 is tempting. I can't tell from the Sanyo site if it has the external mic jack though ... that might just be the HD versions? From the example vids posted here I did notice some sound issues a few times, but in other vids it was just fine. I use a small canon digital still camera at the moment for those I don't want carry my DV cam with me times. It's not like it has great sound either ... Re: [videoblogging] Help with Premiere
The good news is, I don't think this is a problem with Premiere The bad news is, I think its a problem with your codecs. That canon camera (the same one I use) stores its AVIs in MJPEG format. It sounds like one of your installs/updates changed (or perhaps even removed) the MJPEG video codec from your system. If you fix that, the rest will fall into place (I think). Do you have QuickTime Player installed? Will the clips play in QuickTime Player? (Right click your clip and use open with to try and open them in Quicktime Player.)I believe QT uses an apple codec for these other than the one Windows probablly was using. I'm not 100% sure, but I think windows uses the cinepak codecs for MJPEG AVIs by default. This comes with DirectX I believe ... you might try updating/reinstalling directX and see if that fixes it. You can also run dxdiag (from the start- run) to see if Windows can find any problems with your DirectX install (look especially on the DirectX Files Tab). Alternatively, I found a place where you can download a free MJPG codec which might work (I haven't tested with this codec myself): *http://tinyurl.com/39em64* You can use the below steps, btw, to find out what video codecs you have on your system (Although they aren't always named in such a way that you can tell which one handles what). # Go to the START MENU # Select CONTROL PANEL # Select SOUNDS AUDIO DEVICES ... Re: [videoblogging] Re: Help with Premiere
ah. sounds like maybe that codec is watermarked unless you pay for it or something. I just stumbled across another site that claims to have the basic windows codecs available for download: http://freepctech.com/pc/002/files011.shtml I'd give those a try. (There's a zip file of codecs as well as a nice list of them (including two mjpeg codecs) in a table at the bottom of the page.) Let me know if you get it working! (I know its strange, but this is actually where you'll find the video codecs =P) # Select the Hardware Tab # Hightlight Video Codecs # Hit properties - Dave Yahoo! On 7/11/07, rusted.gate [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Just wondering about a really succinct explanation of this so I don't get so overwhelmed next time. Basically when I installed some software (probably for my new camera), I ended up with conflicting codecs. When I deleted all the codecs, the computer didn't know what to do with those old AVIs. Yup. Why was it the old AVIs and not the new ones, taken from a different camera? You mentioned something about how the Canon SD400 stores it's files. Yeah. The Canon SD400 stores AVIs that use the MJPEG codec. (AVI is just a container and could contain video compressed with various codecs). Other AVIs may be some other codec like MPEG2 or MPEG4 ... those would continue to work just fine since it was only the MJPEG codec that got somehow stepped on. MJPEG is an older codec and not used as predominantly as it once was ... but it is generally a very well understood codec (most applications play nice with it). Now a days you get digital still cameras that store a videos using a more progressive codec. Then my other question is... how do I get the files off of my new camera without going through all of this all over again! I need something to convert IFO to AVI. Good question. I would THINK that if you install your new camera stuff and then reinstall whatever mjpeg codec you've now got to work again (should it again mess up your old AVIs) ... you'd probably be ok without having to uninstall the new camera stuff first. One thing you might want to do is export our your current project first in something other than mjpeg format. This way if worse comes to worse, you can at least access its current state with some mid-point exported file. Thank you again. I'm going to get this project done and over with before I download any other stuff. No problem, glad you got it working again. - Dave --- In videoblogging@yahoogroups.com, David Meade [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: ah. sounds like maybe that codec is watermarked unless you pay for it or something. We're all eager to believe (I think) that this was a simple oversight on PodTechs part ... we're not (I don't think) trying to burn them at the stake for making a mistake ... but rather set some reasonable community expectations as to how such mistakes should be addressed/handled/settled going forward ... and having such issues drag out for SO LONG only to be left with a bottom line of look, Mr Independent producer, we're going to set the price for your media we already stole and used isn't really gonna cut it. You get to negotiate a price be if you do so BEFORE yo use it otherwise you (the guy who stole the content) SETTLE for a price. Pod tech needs to settle this and do right by Lan ... not the other way around. That doesn't mean they have to pay $3k (and Lan has already said he has been attempting to negotiate and sent multiple quotes) ... but they need to find a number that is MUTUALLY agreeable with the content producer. Hopefully they'll work it out and Lan will be able to report that behind the scenes they reached a settlement and he is happy with the result ... but until he can say that, a community that PodTech hopes to court has an understandable concern. And Lan has been pretty quiet on this all things considered. Its the rest of us that wont let it be :-P - Dave -- http://www.DavidMeade.com [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Re: [videoblogging] Re: The CNN/YouTube debate last night
There really wasn't any other way for them to do it. YouTube's systems can be gamed to easily to allow youtubers to select the questions the candidates committees would have had no problem gaming the system in order to get the questions they wanted rated into the debate. Overall I think they did a really great job. But it is still a filter/control from an established media company. It is still directed from up high and a select few are allowed to ask questions. On the one hand there is a M$M disrespect of user generated content unless and until it can be used as a marketing tool or as a way to look cool. Next you lock down the contributions from one web video host and then you further filter who can access by having it on cable, if your provider carries CNN, CSPAN or CSPAN2. I've seen nothing from PodTech (EVER, not just in this mess) to suggest to me that the above quotes from 'valerie' isn't going to be their standard operating procedure now that Irina isn't there. Irina did them a great service as liaison to the community ... the folks who are trying to pick up the role at the moment aren't nearly as effective.
