Thanks for the advice Benjamin and Jenny.
It sounds like you have to be careful when implementing dialer watch.

Hi,
I am setting up a Cisco lab and I have a question in regards to the ISDN
simulator. I am weighting in between Simline 2 and ILS-2000. They both
have built-in NT1 so I can just plug in my 2503 and it should work.
Now, what gets me is that for the Simline 2 you can get it almost $1000
When configuring an ISDN backup for a frame relay circuit do most people
typically use dialer watch or floating static routes. In my scenerio,
it's for an eigrp network and a single router.
I've seen the following article on Cisco's website:

ATM, and Frame Relay, implement error correction, or more precisely re-
transmission in the interface to the signalling protocols. ISDN relies
on the hop by hop error correction offered by LAPD. However, they tend
to leave the issue of payload error correction to any high level end
.
And B channel is a different retrans technique, based upon the higher layer
protocols it carries. If an ISDN frame gets corrupt, both channels will be
retransmitted, but by differnt methods. So ISDN D channel is inherently
reliable at layer two and B channel is reliable only if that higher layer
the other side which frame number it expects next.
Check this out:
Boston#debug isdn q921
2656.612 TX - IDREQ ri = 14613 ai = 127
2656.648 RX SABMEp sapi = 0 tei = 64
2656.676 RX RRr sapi = 0 tei = 64 nr = 1
2658.372 TX - INFOc sapi = 0 tei = 64 ns = 0 nr = 1
It's the NR and NS
reliable protocol -- it allows
multilink operation, so retransmission requests are made only if no
frame with a correct CRC arrives on any link.
And B channel is a different retrans technique, based upon the higher layer
protocols it carries. If an ISDN frame gets corrupt, both channels
Some troubleshooting books (like CIT) make a big deal about the reliability
and connection-oriented nature of ISDN which got me thinking...
Q.921 is definitely reliable and connection-oriented (looks just like LLC2,
in fact), but it only runs on the D channel, right? (It's also known as
LAPD
q.921 is D channel, but is like a layer two protocol in that it just cares

q.931 is only run on D channel. Q.931 is part of Q.SIG, the telecom

Q.921 is LAPD, isn't it?. Q.921 (LAPD) carries Q.931 info which is one

reliable and connection-oriented and does include sequence numbers, etc.

Do a debug ISDN events, debug q921, debug q931 and see if all three steps
work. If so, I'd check dialer-maps, ppp settings and authentication and ip
addresses.
TO me, I'd suspect the ISDN switch. The Debug isdn event should show when
the switch drops you and why it did.

If I ever have some extra voice cards laying around, I need to try this :)
Ken- the 2500s are S/T interfaces which means you need a NT1 between them
and the ISDN line. The 1600, 2600 etc with WICs can come either flavor, U or

Kenneth,
Hi! That is a Simline2 you are referring to. It's a great ISDN simulator
and most certainly the CHEAPEST way to emulate an ISDN switch for a CCIE
lab. We've sold quite a few of them and I can recommend them very highly.
We used to sell the Emutel Solo which is also an excellent
