Good Evening,
On Monday I noticed there were ripe salmon berries. Gray jays tend
them closely but had missed a few days. On Tuesday I saw, and heard, a
gray streak drop to the ground with a thump. On Wednesday the thumping
continued on my roof. Yesterday I saw an immature gray jay
Good Evening,
The sun hit us with another CME yesterday. Solar flux dropped a
little, it is around 180 after a few days over 200. If it were less
cloudy I would take my telescope out for a look at the many sunspots.
Maybe next week.
The mostly cloudy week has kept temperatures
Good Evening,
The new growth on the fir trees is less prominent. A few more weeks
and it will look like the rest of the needles. More variety of bird
calls. With warmer temperatures habitat improves. Lots more bugs :)
The sun is active with three large groups nearing the limb. RF
Good Evening,
It was a cool, sunny week. The ferns are over eight feet tall so
they're nearly done growing. During the warmest sunny days I found them
a home to many ladybugs. As soon as it cools, or the sun goes behind a
cloud they are gone. Red bugs against green ferns are easy to
Good Evening,
It has been a pleasant week. A number of new birds arrived: a
female Black-Headed Grosbeak, a Yellow Warbler, a Gold Crowned Kinglet,
and a turkey vulture. Those were only the ones who got my attention. I
am sure there are many more since the forest is producing insects
Good Evening,
It was a cool, partly sunny week. Temperatures were warm enough for
hummingbirds to actively defend the feeder. New growth, a fresh crop of
insects, and drier weather brought many new birds. I expect to see the
elk return to take advantage of the grass.
The sun is
Good Evening,
It has been a chilly, wet week. The cold weather has affected the
hummingbirds. The males don't fight very much, not even a tail
display. They just give each other angry glares as they feed.
The sun is a little less active. We are between the most active
groups which
Good Evening,
The sun remains quite active. Solar flux is above 200 and the
sunspot number is over 160. However, the large group from last week is
no longer facing our way so the CMEs should slow down for a while.
Hopefully there will be better propagation tomorrow than that of the
Good Evening,
Propagation ranged from abysmal to poor. QSB was slow and
moderate. Noise was quite low which is always a tip off. Weather
reports were pleasant. Spring is hinting at summer.

Good Evening,
The ongoing geomagnetic storm has dropped to G1. Tomorrow they are
predicting another round at the G5 level. Communications below 30 MHz
will probably be impaired. Hopefully the two nets will be unaffected
during a lull between CMEs.
The snow from last week was
Good Evening,
It has been a cold, wet, snowy week. My daffodils look fresh due to
the chill. They last for weeks during the end of winter. Birds are
settling in. A few woodpeckers are making homes.
The sun is very active. Multiple CME hits and near misses, with
another due
Good Evening,
Spring is progressing. I finally saw the hummingbird which is
emptying the feeder. I also saw a doe with a yearling eating their way
across the new undergrowth. Their winter coats make them quite
visible. They were back again today. Then the doe found a dry spot
under a
Good Evening,
It was partly sunny and cool all week. Currently it is windy. My
view is much greener. More flowers but no hummingbirds at the feeder.
It has stopped snowing so they should show up soon. The daffodils are
all open with a few trilliums here and there.
The ionosphere
Good Evening,
Spring is mostly here. More flowers, more birds, more pollen, and
more bugs. Sun appears more often these days. However, more snow is
due on Tuesday. Frosty nights kill off the biting flies, I appreciate
being eaten less.
The sunspot number is below 100 but the sun
Good Evening,
Some weeks nothing goes right, this was not one of them. Light rain
then sun and mild temperatures. More flowers and more birds. Snow is
melting above me so streams are full. The ground was dry enough to let
me check the forest. I have much less damage than my neighbors.
Good Evening,
The last bit of snow melted yesterday. Winter may be done, spring
can take over. A few daffodils are turning yellow. They should open
this week. Many birds have returned, some of them have started to
nest. I saw a Steller's Jay collecting moss from a nearby limb.
Good Evening,
It was sunny and warm today. Most of the snow has melted so I went
for a walk to check the damage to the forest. A few dozen broken trees
ranging from ten inches in diameter to twenty. Their trunks exploded
into many shards around thirty feet up. Only the Doug fir
Good Evening,
The snow is no longer in the trees. It has all fallen after pruning
the forest. A few small trees are down, a few large tops, lots of
branches, thousands of cones, and millions of fir needles. A good
supply of lichen is on the snow attracting the deer. Squirrels are busy
Good Evening,
Spring is coming: fifty degrees and sunny followed by six inches of
snow. I saw a few daffodil shoots which always precede the last
snowfall. If it happens before they are too tall they don't mind.
The sun is very active this week; one large sunspot especially so.
Good Evening,
The sun had an active week sending numerous flares and CMEs. There
were a few RF blackouts but the CMEs mostly missed us. There are fewer
sunspots though plenty of ions are flowing our way. Expect a variety of
QSB, some ion static, and those odd noises which whistle through
Good Evening,
The sun is quite active. One large sunspot group has flared a few
times. A CME is on the way due the 13th. That sunspot group has a mix
of magnetic fields which creates an unstable region. Anything launched
in the next few days will be in our direction. I listened on 80,
Good Evening,
The last few days have been sunny and mild. Today I walked most of
my southern, western, and northern boundaries. The seasonal stream in
the NW corner is flowing with one to two inch waterfalls. Just off the
edge of the property it descends into the canyon below. There is
Good Evening,
It may have stopped raining for a few minutes this week, the fog
was persistent. Yesterday the last of the snow succumbed.
The sun is taking a short break. No CMEs are currently due. The
sun spot number dropped below 100. It looks bare but I doubt that will
last
Good Evening,
After a series of very cold days winter has returned to normal. In
other words it is raining, foggy, and the snow is melting. I expect the
snow to be gone by Wednesday at this rate. The storms shook the trees
and filled the snow with seeds. Now birds are taking advantage
Good Evening,
Winter got cold this week. Currently it is 15 degrees F with fresh
snow falling. It is supposed to get marginally warmer by tomorrow.
Sleet was falling earlier, which seems odd considering the temperature.
It must be near freezing wherever it was formed.
The sun is
Good Evening,
It has been cool, wet, and foggy. Today it snowed for a while.
Some of it stuck. The sun rose above my southern horizon today. It
hides behind the mountain for a few weeks around the solstice,
increasing the gloom factor.
The sun looks uncluttered, but it is pretty
Good Evening,
The weather has been mild and wet, with a few minutes of sun. I am
seeing more hunters than elk. A longer range forecast has snow in a few
weeks from a cold front moving south. Power was out for a few hours due
to high winds breaking lines from Bonneville Dam. Good thing
Good Evening,
It was the day before the day before Christmas. The clouds settled
into the valleys with the sun skimming the southern horizon. It held
little warmth due to the grazing angle. My walk was more brisk than
usual to generate some heat. However, I did not startle a bird,
Good Evening,
Terrestrial weather has been partly sunny, windy, and chilly. Solar
weather was more intense. Multiple CMEs are on the way spawned by a
single sunspot. One of them is from the X class flare which blacked out
communications earlier this week. One, or a mix of two, is due
Good Evening,
There were brief pauses in the rain this week. Sometimes the breaks
were sunny. Other times there was snow. Snow line keeps moving up and
down past me so any accumulation is temporary.
The sun has a few large, active sunspot groups. There are no
predicted CMEs.
Good Evening,
It has been mostly sunny but cool. The first snow of the season
fell yesterday. Early in the week I heard branches breaking so I went
outside for a look. A herd of elk was spread through the forest. The
younger elk were chasing each other around the clearest areas
Good Evening,
It was a much less gloomy week. In fact it was downright sunny.
Cold though, at least for here. Last night it dropped into the high
teens. It did get above freezing today but not by much. The bird basin
has not thawed. The elk have carved a new path just inside a
Good Evening,
The week was mostly sunny with temperatures below 50F. Warm enough
for a new crop of mushrooms but too cold for spiders. The alder have
lost their leaves, now the mosses are glowing bright green. More light
and rain lets them progress to their diploid phase.
The sun
Good Evening,
It has been a wet week. The sun did come out for a few seconds but
the rest of the time it has been foggy, rainy, and gloomy. Almost all
of the bracken ferns are yellow, gold, or bronze. Leaves have mostly
changed to some shade of yellow with a slight tinge of orange.
Good Evening,
The week was foggy and wet until yesterday. Then skies cleared and
the temperature dropped to 25F. Today was perfect for kicking up
grouse, but I saw none. In fact I saw or heard very few birds. The
mushrooms were showing a lot of frost damage.
The sun is active but
Good Evening,
More color changes and fewer leaves let me see the birds more
easily. During a burst of heavy rain I watched a number of Varied
Thrushes using transient puddles to wash up. I thought birds sat under
cover when it rained; they were enjoying the downpour.
Two CMEs may
Good Evening,
It was a wet chilly week while I explored unproductive paths. Now
that I've mapped the dead ends it will be easier to find the correct one.
The forecast is for no CMEs and no solar flares. The ionosphere
will get a chance to calm down a little. Less QSB is nice.
Good Evening,
I have seen a few groups of geese flying south. Some are flying in
V formation, but most are not. The elk are taking advantage of the
paths I opened; the ground is chewed up with hoof prints. A bobcat or a
mountain lion is using the same path. There are more color changes
Good Evening,
The rainy season began early this year; the last week was chilly,
foggy, and wet. The sun returned today highlighting new color changes.
With temperatures dropping to the mid 30s some shrubs are getting ready
for winter. Some crows were ridge soaring over me today. With
Good Evening,
I took advantage of the cool week to trim a few dozen trees. I cut
all the branches within reach of my limb loppers. Now the elk trail is
easier to traverse; the deer should follow it too. It began with me
clearing the WiFi path. Now I have more paths for wire antennas
Good Evening,
I was pruning begonias when an Oregon Nuthatch landed on the lip of
the water basin next to me. Three common species are the Oregon Junco,
the Oregon Chickadee, and the Oregon Nuthatch. Each of them has a patch
of rusty brown on them. Otherwise they are like their cousins
Good Evening,
After a wet, cool week today feels very nice. Sunny skies, no wind,
temperature rose to 79 F. It is nice to walk outside without the bugs
around. The spiders eat them. The Canada jays are migrating to lower
limbs eating more bugs. A few followed me around today as I
Good Evening,
Rain gave the soil a fresh, spicy scent due to its heritage. The
last of the large cedar trees were cut before WWII but the soil is made
from generations of their needles and fallen timber. I took my laptop
out into the forest to call a Pileated woodpecker. He flew in and
Good Evening,
It was a cool week with some fog, then a thunderstorm with an inch
of rain. The forest enjoyed the moisture. Some of the ferns are
turning yellow from a few 30 degree nights. Smoke has returned but not
as thick as it was last week.
The sun continues to be moderately
Good Evening,
The sun has numerous, complex sunspot groups. Curiously no strong
flares are expected. That is an interesting point of view :) Flux is
high and the auroral oval is bright. I expect a steady hiss interrupted
by lightning static.
Each morning this week the sky was red.
Good Evening,
I searched for the name of the shrub outside my window. It feeds a
lot of birds. I found oceanspray on the gardening link below. I have
mentioned thimbleberries and huckleberries. The next link has a photo
of thimbleberries. I found a few sites for red huckleberries too.
Good Evening,
It was a pleasant week. Temperatures rose to the low 80s. Humidity
is high for the summer, around 60%. There was no rainfall but clouds
touched the mountain for a while which is sufficient. Thimble berries
and huckleberries are doing well. I have been sampling them one by
Good Evening,
The sun has been active this week. Earlier today there was a radio
black out due to a cloud of protons hitting the ionosphere. An earth
directed CME will follow in a couple of days. Spot 3384 may flare
soon. I hope to hear a few thunderstorms tomorrow.
Weather has been
Good Evening,
It was sunny and warm this week. I spent four days with saws
improving my 2.4 GHz signal path. When we reset the dish earlier this
year the alder did not have leaves. They grew to full size blocking the
path. Now they are felled, limbed, and stacked; ready for the wood
Good Evening,
It was a cool week, until Wednesday. Now temperatures are flirting
with triple digits. Foxgloves and fireweed are both in bloom.
Raspberries are still red, not yet ready. Salmon-berries are ripe but
I'm not a fan. Thimble-berries will be ready in a few weeks.
The
Good Evening,
There has been no rain this week. The last three mornings have been
foggy but it was not dense enough to condense rain from the trees. The
forest did gathered some of it; the air smells better. Looks like a
mild week ahead so the fire danger should stay low.
The large
Good Evening,
Sun, with a little rain, has made the forest green. It smells
great. More new birds arrived. The young Gray jays have learned to
fly. I noticed them falling onto the roof until they gained control.
Now they have joined the flock flying around.
The sun has a very
Good Evening,
The fir trees have two to three inches of bright green new growth.
The ferns are between six and ten feet tall but not done unrolling. The
hummingbirds returned and brought friends. It is quite busy right now,
I have to duck when I walk out the door. They enjoy flying at
Good Evening,
It rained yesterday. Very slow though very little, mostly fog
condensing on the trees. The forest is much more green today. More
birds have moved in but the hummingbirds seem to have moved off. Their
newly filled feeder hangs untouched.
The sun is active and promises
Good Evening,
It was a sunny, mild week; the forest smells dry. The ferns are not
done unrolling but it is getting harder to see the burrows. Today I had
a Steller's jay follow me around on my hike. Normally a few Grey jays
keep tabs but today they were absent. Pollen is not absent,
Good Evening,
Only a few weeks ago there was a foot of snow on the ground. Now the
ferns are six feet tall and unrolling. The second, larger species of
hummingbird has returned. Compared to the Anna's the Rufous seem huge.
They do share the feeder though.
The sun is active at the
Good Evening,
The warm weather has caused a riot of growth. It is like watching a
time-lapse movie at double speed. I took a brisk walk through the woods
this morning. The pace was enforced by a healthy crop of ravenous
flies. Higher temperature is drying out Western forests. Much of
Good Evening,
The sun was moderately active this week. A CME hit today. There
are a couple unstable sunspot groups so more of them are expected.
There should be time for the ionosphere to settle down so we can take
advantage of it.
Currently there is a heat wave in Oregon. The
Good Evening,
It was a good day for a hike. Warm enough to not wear a jacket, but
cold enough to limit the biting flies. The soil is decompressing from
the snow; the sword fern are springing up. Some bracken fern are pushing
free, but mostly the forest floor is open. The seasonal stream
Good Evening,
Two days of 80 degree weather made the snow disappear. Buds are
becoming leaves while flowers are blooming quickly. There were no
daffodils open Wednesday, today there are fifty of them interspersed
with trilliums and yellow violets. I filled the hummingbird feeder last
Good Evening,
The forest is waking up. Scents are changing. A few hummingbirds
reminded me to put up their feeder. More woodpecker species are back.
There is a variety of drumming calls. Grouse will find good logs soon.
I wondered if each woodpecker had a resonant frequency to
Good Evening,
Very little snow remains. A little sun, a lot of rain, and higher
temperatures melted the 1/2 foot of new snow from early in the week. My
daffodils are finally seeing sunlight. They will bloom in a few weeks.
I saw a line of Varied Thrush working their way across the
Good Evening,
It has not snowed in three days. Rain has melted most of what is
left. This year there is little runoff; it is soaking into the ground
rather than causing floods. I did not know the ground was so dry up
here. The forest should have good growth. Golden crowned kinglets
Good Evening,
It has been a snowy day. A fawn walked out of the forest soaked by
the slush. She shook to get rid of the water, but was still dark
brown. Then the sun popped out and she stood still. For about fifteen
minutes she stood outside this window enjoying the sun. At a few
Good Evening,
The sunny days melted snow, the other days built it back up. Overall
there has been a net loss. A doe and two fawns took advantage by eating
all the fallen lichen exposed in the area. They spent over an hour
cleaning up.
The sun has reawakened with a number of active
Good Evening,
Snow stopped falling early this week. Now it is slowly melting.
Only a foot is left, but it is dense. I don't see a lot of runoff so it
is soaking the ground. I heard a Pileated woodpecker this afternoon and
a Barred owl at dusk. Some birds are returning but it will take
Good Evening,
Another snowy week left the road looking like a bobsled run. In 4WD
it was fun negotiating the turns. A recent clear cut has exposed a
steep cliff. Two corners have an excellent view, I'm sure a passenger
would enjoy it.
The sun is well spotted and stable for now.
Good Evening,
Snow storms ceased intermittently this week, with a short gap
yesterday. I spent that time shoveling. Today there is no sign of my
work. March came in like a Turner study of fog, snow, and wind.
One last X class flare from spot #3234 caused a short RF black out.

Good Evening,
Dry, powder snow fell throughout the week. Today it got sunny so
most of it fell from the trees. There is still about two feet left with
another few feet on the way. Depending upon the temperature I may need
to shovel the roof. If I have a lot of snow when it starts
Good Evening,
The last inch of snow melted today. The forecast is for more but I
am near snow line so it doesn't last long. The clouds dropped below me
just before sunset as the temperature fell.
The sun has been active. An X class flare struck yesterday. Solar
flux is at 343. The
Good Evening,
Two sunny days during winter, I took advantage of both of them. I
went for a walk. Today I was wondering about the lack of wildlife when
I kicked up two Black-tailed does. They showed me a new path through
the forest, so I followed it. They had been sleeping so I am
Good Evening,
The sun popped out on Ground Hog day. The Pacific Northwest will
get another six weeks of fog and rain. Luckily there will be some snow
for variety.
The sun is almost bare this week. Fewer sunspots and lower flux.
That should mean lower noise and less QSB. It could

A mild, rainy week helped me clear a few things off of my to do
list. The sun has fewer, less active sunspots than the last few weeks.
I expect less QSB. We will test this hypothesis.

Good Evening,
The winds have slowed a bit but the rain continues. I lost a few
large fir trees to wind in the SW corner of my land. The trees were
exposed to the neighboring clear cut and the SW wind. Douglas Fir trees

Good Evening,
The new year has been windy and wet thus far. Flying limbs have not
eaten either of my antennas. The power outages have been only seconds
long.
Sunspot 3182 has been very active. Three X class events this week
causing RF blackouts over large areas of the world.
Happy New Year,
It was an exciting week. I got to see trees flying past my house.
Now there is a stack of green alder chunks next to the driveway. After
a day or two the exposed wood oxidizes to an orange hue. The roof is
fine though I have ceased resetting my clocks. Power drops out
Merry Christmas,
Winter came in like a lion. Two nights ago it dropped to 5 degrees;
it is much colder in the Midwest. My well acted up for a day, I am glad
I had water stored. For some reason it was raining well below
freezing. The trees got a coating of ice then a layer of hoar
Good Evening,
I had a sunny, chilly week. Wind brought in clouds and shut off the
power yesterday. I expect some snow, but won't get much of it over the
next week. Christmas may or may not be white; often it is pouring rain.
The sun is moderately active. A few sunspots have had C
Good Evening,
Six inches of fresh snow covered the ground as ~30 elk moved
through. They were not even looking for food, they wanted to drop into
a nearby canyon for some quiet. Hunting season has them a little on
edge. Since then it has been quite foggy with a lot of rain. Yesterday
Good Evening,
Three inches of fresh snow reveals a lot. I saw a family group of
four coyotes against the white backdrop. They entered the more open
areas of my land covered with grasses, shrubs, and ferns under the
canopy of fir and hemlock. They split into two pairs; I lost track of
Good Evening,
A steady rain of fir needles fell from a windless sky. I looked up
into the foggy tree to see a flock of Gray jays fluffing their feathers,

Good Evening,
It was a busy, chilly week. On Tuesday I found myself in a field of
elk. They are surprisingly noisy. As they diffuse through my property
they test the rotted slash. Now I have more paths to walk and there is
less forage. On Wednesday I saw a large covey of California

Good Evening,
After a snowy week it is nice to see the sun again. On Wednesday a
bird got my attention from about ten feet away. He gave me enough time
to look him up on three websites. I watched a Red-breasted sapsucker
make his characteristic row of holes around a tree. First one
Good Evening,
It was rainy and cool this week. Many color changes in the ferns
and shrubs. Yesterday the rain fell heavily, then the wind kicked up.

Good Evening,
It was a cool, wet week. Wet enough for them to burn the slash in a

Everything soaked straight in. Fire danger dropped quickly. The smoke

Good Evening,
It was a mild, smokey week. Wind moves the smoke around though you
can still taste it. The wind also causes a steady rain of fir needles.
Dry weather has caused more of them to die off. Black berries are not
doing very well. The jays have a lean and hungry look.
The

they are sour. Black berries are young too. There has been no rain
