There was one on eBay, sale ended by now, of a complete 67II kit, for a huge amount of cash!! No, I'm sticking out for a 67II, but I think all their cameras are great. I would be right in the mire if I sold one of the MXs, such is its perceived value at home. Paul, that's not another new e-mail address you have, is it? Malcolm Don't rule out ebay, guys. Even for a 67II. I've seen a couple of them go through, and they're certainly less pricey than a new one. And if you can live without the fancy meter and TTL flash, you can get a very good deal on a MLU 6x7 or a 67. I spent slightly more than $2000, and I now have a nice 6x7 with a metered finder, grip, and four lenses: late model 55, late model 104, a 150, and a 300. Don't rule out ebay. Re: pancake question
But the FA 43 f/1.9 just doesn't seem to inspire the fervor, neither here nor on ebay, that the original pancake does, so maybe the 3mm longer and the f/1.9 aperture just doesn't equate to a genuine pancake lens. Perhaps folks want their lenses small and soft, relatively speaking, because the pancake is not anywhere close to as good as the FA 43 f/1.9 in performance. P67, lenses and balance
I was trying to explain to someone on the weekend why I found the Pentax 67 so very comfortable to hand-hold, and I got into talking about balance. If I put my left hand under the mirror box of the 67, in the position it would normally be for shooting, I can extend my left hand's fingers and thumbs away from supporting the lens and also let go of the camera with my right hand altogether, and the camera does not tip or wobble. I find this with both the lenses I own (the 75mm f2.8 and the 105mm f2.4), which isn't surprising considering that they weigh virtually the same and are nearly identical in length. Anyhow, I find that this makes me feel very comfortable holding the camera, and really helps me relax when using it. When I put my A* 200mm f2.8 on my ME Super, I nearly always put the Winder ME II on as well, because otherwise I find my left hand's fingers bearing the full weight of the camera and lens, and though it isn't very much, it is less comfortable. I was wondering a few things. 1) Have other 67 users noticed this? Have you noticed it with other lenses, or have you noticed the opposite with other lenses? Obviously the 800mm f4 is a little front heavy, but I mean lenses like the 45mm and 55mm and 200mm and the two zooms, lenses that would make sense to hand-hold. 2) Have any 35mm or 645 owners noticed the same with certain body/lens combinations? 3) Am I the only one who is actually excited about this? -Aaron - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Another 67 Arrival.
Hi Aaron - the 90-180 is f5.6 steady (yuk!). The difference between the 55-100 (f4) is noticable to me throught the viewfinder. After hefting, mounting, and generally coveting it for 2 days, it's the max aperature (rather that weight) that's leading me to think that Mr Tripod will be used with this lens more often than with the 55-100 Ps. I tried everything - cold showers, ritualised beatings, (even getting married in NY), but I succumbed to the temptations... it's only when you hear Hi, KEH Camera's that you KNOW you have found spiritual solace that only a true brother can know...! :) Oliver - Original Message - From: Aaron Reynolds [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, March 21, 2002 8:41 PM Subject: Re: Another 67 Arrival. Hakuba Carbon tripod
Well, I am back from my Japan trip. I went alone and so I could take the decision on a mere 3 hours and after 3 visits to Yodobashi camera at Shinjuku. I bite the bullet and bought the Hakuba MG-604 Carbon Fibre tripod. This is the 4 section one. Though the three section one was much more sturdy, it was a bit on the heavier side and a bit taller. My justification was, it is better to compromise some features for a tripod which you can carry, rather go for one with all you want and leave it at home because of the weight/size. At a price of 19000 yen, it seems to be a good buy to m e. I am testing it this weekend. Will update the list about the performance next week. RAM for Lombard - clarification required please
Hi, Right, just trying to get my head around RAM for a Lombard I'm building. According to the specs, it needs to be: 3.3v unbuffered, low power 144 pin 100MHz 10 ns SO DIMM RAM. And I also understand that the 'lower slot' RAM, that is the underside slot on the CPU daughter board, is the smaller 1.5 size, while the upper slot can take the taller 2 (or bigger?) RAM cards. And the smaller, 1.5 size cards will fit in both the lower and upper slots anyway. Am I right so far? Questions: If I look for used RAM (say eBay), what should I realistically look out for? The system bus speed on the Lombard is 66 MHz, yes? But the minimum RAM 'speed' needs to be 100MHz, yes? So do I look out for any old 144 pin PC100 SO DIMM RAM cards? Obviously not - there are differences, so what are they? RAM for Pismos seems much more prevalent both new and used, so will a 256MB card that fits a Pismo CPU board RAM slot also fit on e Lombard CPU board RAM slot? If not, what about the other way: from a Wallstreet? Although the Wallstreet RAM is 'only' 66 MHz, I presume this is incompatible? RAM sold used doesn't necessarily come tagged as 'Lombard' RAM. So what other Macintosh computers actually take the same RAM cards as the Lombard? Thanks very much in advance on this very perplexing issue. Re: R: March 2002 PUG Comments (and a Question)
That is not entirely correct. Win 98, and I suppose newer versions, can use color profiles for the system. I am certainly using one now. Go into display setting, advanced, color management. One of the strange things is, if you are using color management for the system, you have to turn it off in your picture editing software. AND, you need to set the gamma in you picture editing software to 1 as gamma correction is already done by the system color management. I don't know why this is but if I had to make a guess I would think it probably has something to do with how they read the jpg compression. Maybe someone with more technical expertise can shed some light on this. On Windows at least, some photo editing software uses different gamma settings to the system, which usually makes the image look brighter. Photoshop 5.0 or later (full versions only) also uses colour profiles which the system does not (well, not for display). RE: P67, lenses and balance
Being the Taoist that I am balance is very important. That's the one thing I noticed about the MZ-5N. I disliked the fact that when I put an old screw mount onto that body (a 135mm 2.5), it felt, well, weird. Off balance, like it was too top heavy. Sure it was fine with the standard 28-80 3.5-5.6 silver FA lens but not with the old skool stylings of a classic 80-200 M lens. The K1000 (or the old SL for that matter) seemed more appropriate. Even when the newer 28-80 FA lens was mounted onto the K1000, it still felt good... because the main weight of the camera was firmly held at it's base (i.e. the body). It felt even better once the 135mm was put onto it. So yes, I have noted the effect that balance has and yes, you are the only one really excited about it... now go on and get out of that jello tree. Re: pancake question
Hi, Len, Interesting. When I borrowed Wendy's MX, I didn't expect to find the 40mm pancake on it. Having read opinions on this list similar to yours, Len, I really didn't expect much from it in terms of sharpness. Maybe it was my low expectation that caused me to be pleasantly surprised when I got back my first roll, and found the prints to be quite sharp. But maybe I have low standards... ;-) In any event, I still want one. Not as a collectable, obviously, but as a user. And, I have to admit, part of the allure for me is its size. I think it would be wasted on any camera but the MX or one of the other M series bodies (size-wise), as they're so physically compatible. Thanks to all who replied regarding whether the price of the one that I'm looking at is reasonable - as I suspected, it seems to be. regards, frank Paris, Leonard wrote: Do you think they are really buying the pancake because it is a collectable? Re[2]: pancake question
Hi, Do you think they are really buying the pancake because it is a collectable? It isn't, to my knowledge, a rarity. I think they were produced in pretty great quantity. I think the lens has gained an undeserved reputation of being an extremely sharp lens, collectible and rare are not the same thing. Collectors don't operate according to any logic discernible to non-collectors. A good example of this, which I've been able to take advantage of, is the Leica M4-2. 16,100 of these were made, compared with 22,444 of its successor the M4-P. Yet the M4-2 sells for significantly less than the M4-P because it has a bad name with collectors. This bad name is entirely undeserved; it's simply an irrational collector thing, like the pancake lens. There's more about it here: http://www.nemeng.com/leica/016b.shtml I got mine, which is in very good condition, for significantly less than than I could have got any other Leica M, and as far as I can tell it's no worse (or better) than any others. It's certainly no worse than my M3, which cost the same and is in noticeably worse condition cosmetically. The pancake lens is rather like this. I paid about US $100- for mine. It's in perfect condition. Optically it's a good enough lens for most purposes, but it's certainly not 'extremely sharp'. The focal length is very nice indeed, and the thin focusing grip is not a problem for me. But I can't understand why people get into a frenzy over them; it's just one of those inexplicably irrational things, like beanie dolls, hula hoops and clackers. --- Bob - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: Darkroom: Enlarger Question.
For a 35mm enlarger... I'm told the 75mm f/4.5 Minolta Rokkor is decent. Also, the Nikor 105mm f-5.6 is considered pretty good. These are fairly expensive as enlarger lenses go, so they better be good. The last enlarging lens that I used was a screw mount Pentax 100mm f/4 macro lens with a converter to Leica mount. (These converters are nearly impossible to find.) Worked pretty damn good, but this would be an expensive way to go. Don't try this with any other lens than a macro lens. You'll be disappointed. Hi Chris ... Keep it simple, good, and inexpensive - an El Nikkor 50/2.8 is a very fine starter lens. They are generally quite good optically, and they are common, which makes finding a good example relatively easy and fairly inexpensive. It's also good enough to make larger prints. One way is to buy something inexpensive and simple, to use while you're learning, until you know what you want to do in the darkroom. For Sale, Once used Tamrac 678 Rolling Photo Backpack in almost as new condition (wheels are scuffed). Bought to transport 600mm FA lens and some photo gear. Pack measures approximately 24 high by 14 wide by 12 deep. Will hold multiple 35mm medium format cameras, large telephoto lenses, a tripod a multitude of related equipment. Rolls well in airports and on paved surfaces and also is a comfortable backpack. Is foam padded and water proof with foam padded adjustable dividers to creat protective compartments to securely hold a variety of cameras, lenses accessories. Fits in most overhead compartments on commercial jets. Decided to sell after one trip to the Alaska outback, where it quickly became apparent that this was not the way to transport this lens in the bush - took too much time to set up and break down camera body/lens for transport in backpack. Have since bought a Kinesis L630 long lens case/padded shoulder harness which allows me to carry lens with body attached for quicker setup in the field. Re: How is Russian glass?
Monday, I received a new MC Jupiter-9 2/85mm lens from Pavel Gubanov. Many of you know him as ustas on ebay. He quit listing this lens for awhile on ebay and I emailed him to see if he had any more. He sent me a new one for $45, including shipping. From what I could tell from the Russian manual, it was manufactured in 2001. I ran a test roll through it today and I am pleasantly surprised. How good can a $45 lens be anyway? I am probably more surprised that my wife sat still long enough without any makeup on for me to see how it works as a portrait lens. I shot five head-and-shoulder shots of my wife @ f:2-f:8. My wife and my two daughters picked the f:2 shot as the most flattering. It's noticably sharper at f:4. I shot a series of brick wall shots and there doesn't appear to be any light falloff at f:2.8. Again it sharpens nicely at f:4. A third series to check the bokeh impressed me as well...very nice and smooth. If my count is right, it has 16 blades and the roundest aperature I have ever seen. On the negative side, it uses stop down metering and is a preset lens. The focusing is certainly not as smooth as we have come to expect from our Takumars. It is going to take a little practice to get used to it, but it may just be worth the trouble. Judging from the results, this could be the best $45 I've spent in a long time. -- Kenneth Archer, San Antonio, Texas [EMAIL PROTECTED] - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List. Re: KX MOT
For those who don't know, MOT means Motor Drive (optional). This is the same drive available on the K2 MOT. Other than condition, two attributes can make a KX cost more: black body, and the MOT capability. Chrome (silver) KXs seem to sell for $90 to $130. Blaack KXs, $120 to $200. Since I became a KX fan a couple months back, I've scoured my links and found just two KX MOTs for sale. A chrome KX MOT is going for something like $379. A black KX MOT is going for $189! Go figure. I suspect that a certain number of the KXs for sale on EBay are MOTs but the owner isn't aware. (OR does MOT appear prominently on the body?) It would be nice if someone shared a secret for spotting hidden MOT specimens. In either case, $100 sounds like a great price if you'll actually use the motor drive option or think that you may one day resell the camera. But if you don't plan to use the motor drive--which is costly and scarce--I'd shop for a KX on the basis of its condition. Make sure the aperture window is vislble; it's prone to be misaligned. Also check the mirror lockup and timer. Anders Werholt wrote: Today, I saw a KX MOT body in a magazine advertisement. Used, but not ugly, chrome, price about 100 USD (motor drive not included). Somewhere and some way to hang and dry the film. The lens lengths confused me, I saw a lot of 50mm so I assumed those were the Standard to start with. I am not sure how they relate to the printing process. 50mm is the standard for 35mm. The typical recommended 1st lens is a used Nikkor 50/2.8, and it's fine. RE: PhotoExpo - so nothing new from Pentax?
Me too, I just WANTED to believe it soo much that I almost convinced myself. Almost, but not quite. Even an announcement would have been nice... I think if they have nothing for Photokina then you wont be the only customer lost to Pentax. Many more will leave soon and probably many of those will never return. They HAVE to get it done this year - their market is diminishing with every passing month. -Original Message- From: Cotty [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] I must admit that I was very skeptical. No, really. I just got caught up in all the hype. Let's put it this way: I have firmly decided that if nothing happens at Photokina this year, a few days later I will be placing an order for a Canon D60, grip, microdrive, and extra battery, which means there will be a lot of K mount glass going up for sale. There's only one possible thing that will stop me from doing that, and you know what it is. At this time, I am convinced that I wont be selling *anything*... Re: Pentax SP1000 battery
Hi, Frantisek, The mercury cell is a px400, but they can be pretty hard to find, as they've been illegal in many places for quite some time. I think Varta might have been one of the last to make them, but they've now stopped. I've heard of some Spottie users who've used the alkaline replacements successfully. AFAIK, the only downside of alkaline is that they don't last as long. Maybe 6 to 12 months (?), as opposed to 10 years or more for mercury cells. They are wonderful cameras, aren't they? :-) regards, frank Frantisek Vlcek wrote: Hi, what's the proper battery for an M42 Asahi Pentax Sp1000? I picked one up in near mint cosmetic shape but with some health problems (working on them now, though), and want to try the meter. Also, if the original battery is a 1.35 mercury, will the 1.5 alkaline work well (considering that alkalines get from 1.65 to 1.25V over their life, but mercury batteries stay near 1.35 almost all their life)? Which battery numbers will work in it? It is about the half size of SR44 it seems. New limited lens (RE: PhotoExpo - so nothing new from Pentax?)
Assuming no new limited at PhotoExpo, what do you guys want to do with the pool? - scrap it - leave it as is until a new lens gets announced. - start over again in May in anticipation of a summer announcement. I'm told the 2 likely scenarios are mid to late summer, or Photokina. Other suggestions welcomed. tv On 23 Mar 2002 at 0:22, Rob Brigham wrote: So can you tell us what it is now? To quote an old American baseball player, Deja-vue all over again! There were the same exact same posts here several years ago regarding the mythical MZ-1. Over the years I have come to the opinion that if Pentax's current products satisfy your needs, stay with them. If you need them to come out with something new, you will wind up in anticipation purgatory. --- Rob Brigham [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Me too, I just WANTED to believe it soo much that I almost convinced myself. I believe a #390 watch cell is identical to the px400, except for the lack of the plastic collar. The collar is important for otherwise the cell can short circuit on the compartment. I wish they made that 35 shift lens in k-mount. I'd sure sign up for JT one You may want to check Kiev/USA. They list the 35 shift in screwmount but they also have a box saying Nikon and other mounts add $50. So the may be able to do a K mount on that or the other lenses they offer. Pentax digital SLR - Not now!
I've been thinking about this lately and I'm in no rush. Todays technology ( even with 6Mp ) isnt as good as 35mm film capture. It's better to buy a good 35mm film scanner if you want digital processing as the resolution is way higher ( isnt 4000dpi roughly equal to 24 Mp?). You can buy a great 35mm film scanner for roughly $1500, way less than any digital SLR would cost. I dont like the idea of having to deal with low capacity batteries, shutter lag, low resolution, limited dynamic range and overall complexity of the cameras. I could imagine keeping dust off the sensors when changing lenses will be a royal pain in the ass. Sure, instant results and very low operating costs are a plus, but I'm only marginally satisfied with the resolution of 35mm film, going downward in resolution now is not acceptable to me. I like the fact that I can grab a coupla spotmatics, a half-dozen rolls of film and shoot all day. No hassles with batteries running out and downloading flash cards, etc. Until they can design digital SLRs that MEET or EXCEED 35mm in terms of resolution and with high capacity on board memory, I'm gonna stick with film. Pentax and minolta are probably doing the right thing in terms of designing digital SLRs. They arent as good as 35mm film yet and cost way too much to produce compared to other digital technologies like film scanners. Sure for press photographers they fit the bill, but I'm not a press photographer. Patiently Waiting for now, JCO - This message is from the Pentax-Discuss Mail List.
