I have yet to buy the new album but they are also supposed to release Prebuild on Aphex Twin Rephlex label. I disagree about that. Exel had some excellent collaborations especially the track Ooops featuring Bjork. A very popular album with the alternative and industrial crowed at the time esspecially here in the US, a ground breaking techno album. > you've > maybe blocked their god awful single with ub40 from your memory - but that > was released shortly after ex:el.. each album had gradually more ill > conceived collaborations (imo) that were aimed at a different kind of > listener.. On the contraire I don't think Georgeus is a bad album, the collaboration with UB40 did achieve some radio success. There is a quirkiness too a lot of the tracks, lots of Alexis SR-16. It's like The Prodigy's Charley meets 80's New Age music. better late then never but i can agree on this one. i should chip in as well.. the period with just before ninety and ex:el was the best. wasn't that fond of solaris (or what was the album after ex:el called?) with ninety and ex:el they got more & more their own typical sound, with olympic and lift etc. don't know even how to call it - but ninety in it's original form (not the tommy boy us version) is the best for me.. indeed with magical dream, donkey doctor, cobra bora and more - only eight/nine tracks - i mean, it really was an album my favourites were quadrastate and ninety.. agree with marsel, ninety is still a great listen as an album - quite dark towards the end.. it was when albums didn't have to fill an entire cd either - so it's not exhausting to listen to, just the right length.. i'd just say that i'm not sure whether this was 808 state's "own typical sound" as gerald was still around at the time.. i can't help but think it all went downhill once he'd gone.. the characteristics of quadrastate and ninety that i enjoy the most are really obvious in gerald's solo stuff on hot lemonade and automanikk, and aren't there in 808 state once he'd gone.. and speaking of gerald we ought to mention his inertia stuff - two really blinding twelves on retroactive and juice box.. FSOL's took the Stakker theme from one of their previous projects, AST (see Asus Flow). There's an old compilation out there of all their various guises, such as Yage, Mental Cube, Stakker... basically everything key that they did on Earthbeat. As for A Guy Called Gerald, he did a response to what happened to him when he left/was pushed from 808 State, called "Specific Hate", in which he uses samples of the phone message (apparently, he was kicked from 808 State over the phone), and he whistles the tune from Pacific State all the way through. Not sure of the label, but I remember it had a Club as the label logo (as in Hearts, Spades, Diamonds). Voodoo Ray got hammered, but the promo of it had a great track "Blow Your House Down" on the flip-side, which was later hashed into a more thumping version on the Chicago Symphony EP (red vinyl bootleg-type affair). As for LFO? Frequencies is probably one of the finest albums of the 90's. LFO's "LFO" had a bit of a rough ride though, as Steve Wright ((ex-)BBC Radio One "deejay") claimed at the time that it was the worst record he had ever heard, but was under strict instructions to play the track, as it had been placed on the "B"-list for airing. John Peel still gave them alot of praise tho at the time, and rightly so. Mark Bell's gone on to do production work for Bjork's "Homogenic" and for Depeche Mode too. Varley's been doing work under G-Man and "presents Tony Montana", but the work is a bit further away from LFO's roots than Varley's production work. "Track 4" from the "LFO (Leeds Warehouse)" 12" is still a most glorious example of how to put together atmospherics, bleep and base. Sweet Exorcist's "Test One", that can be traced far further back... half of Sweet Exorcist is Cabarat Voltaire's Richard H. Kirk. The Cabs "Body & Soul" LP is probably one of the most underestimated LP's within the early stream of techno that was coing from the UK in the early 90's. The similarities between some of the work that Mills did with Waveform Transmissions Vol.1 and X-102 are scarey-close. And finally... Orbital. If you get chance to dig around, pick up the two Mutations EP's... the reworking of Chime is fantastic. .. . :: http://nomorewords.net

The new one is a mixed bag - great sitar playing, incredible production but godawful prog-rock singing from Cobain himself - extremely self-indulgent stuff - but it's no surprise from someone who has been holed up in his studio for three years drinking his own urine. -Original Message- From: Gerald [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Friday, December 13, 2002 5:32 PM To: 313@hyperreal.org Cc: Fabrizio Nahum Subject: Re: (313) 808 State (and A Guy Called Gerald, FSOL, LFO, Sweet Exorcist & Orbital) Yeah, i remembered that one. RE: (313) 808 State
Hehe - knew Mark Archer pretty well (I was at Uni and lived in Stafford for a few years after). He used to get all the Transmat tracks through Network, but worse still was the fact that he had 2 copies of Techno : The New Dance Sound Of Detroit, and the only way that he would give me one was if I got him a 12" copy of "Summertime" (yes... that Will Smith person). Also went around his house while he was doing a remix of a Michelle Gayle (ex-Eastenders) track, but said that he wasn't enjoying it... only after hearing the vocal that they'd sent him could you understand why. Never heard singing so bad. Never met Chris Peat (knowingly at least). I know that his brother did some time for dealing tho. It summed it all up when Mark was asked to respond to what the tabloids were saying at the time, and that Stafford was "Techno City"... he said.. the only thing techno about Stafford is the lifts in the local shopping centre. BTW. If anyone is interested, http://www.aeonflux.co.uk - it's playing most of the artists mentioned (LFO, 808 State, Sweet Exorcist, A Guy Called Gerald ("Blow Your House Down" is on there too). Scroll down a bit on the main page, and you'll see the artists on the play list. You know, we shouldn't be too hard on ourselves (in Europe you mean). A lot of that hardcore has deep roots in the US industrial movement which definitely predates even many people on this list! Granted, there were a lot of Europeans doing the same thing, but I'd say it's quite difficult to draw a distinct line and be able to say: 'it was *you* what started it!' Also re. hardcore, remember Generator-era Oldham and his little stable? It's not like we were marauding Saxons going over and deflowering this lovely music, it worked both ways (that Oldham fellow mindful of getting a kick in the head next time I see him, here ;) what a sterling chap! - err, joshing. "Dreaming Detroit" - Marco Passarani (& someone else) Generaror, 1995, getting hard, but bloody good - *and* soulful. k >-Original Message- >From: Toby Frith [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] >Sent: Friday, December 13, 2002 2:13 PM >To: Mann, Ravinder [CCS]; 'Odeluga, Ken'; Tristan Watkins; Brendan >Nelson; 313 >Subject: Re: (313) 808 State > > >Halcyon times for British techno? If you get chance, try and look for AST (Art Science Technology) - "Asus Flow". It came out before Stakker was released on Westside (I think). There are quite a few remix 12"'s of Humanoid tho.. the Plump DJ's mix that's used in Wipeout Fusion is a real tasty affair. I'm still trying to hunt down a copy of the video they did shortly after... If you see something called "Stakker Eurotechno" or something like that, grab it and hold tight. It later got used by Pot Noodle over in the UK. > -Original Message- > From: Sakari Karipuro [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] > Sent: 13 December 2002 15:09 > To: Craig Harrison > Cc: 313@hyperreal.org > Subject: RE: (313) 808 State (and A Guy Called Gerald, FSOL, LFO, Sweet > Exorcist & Orbital) > > > umm, Humanoid was Brian Dougans solo project. If I remember correctly, wasn't "Voodoo Ray" originally "Voodoo Rage", another response to the 808 State situation? Voodoo Rage was a jungle/DNB remix of Voodoo Ray down on the Black Secret Technology album. Great album as far as that genre is concerned, in my opinion.

RE: (313) 808 State (and A Guy Called Gerald, FSOL, LFO, Sweet Exorcist & Orbital)
Just some additional info on the posts made. Orbital. True about FSOL, I can still go home and listen most of 'Lifeforms' without cringing to much esp the CD single. The same can be said about 'Insides' by Orbital which doesnt appear to have aged at all. Back to 808 who I didnt get into initailly expect for the 'Pacific' track, I think Ill give ex:el a listen and see how I get on. Cheers Rav

RE: (313) 808 State
It wasn't number one, but it was fairly successful in the charts. I can listen to it fairly easy, but prefer the versions without the synth-sax bit (which reminds me a bit of Guru Josh sometimes). Overexposure to the track is probably what makes it difficult for you to listen to! It's the same with LFO "LFO", which did well in the charts and kind of suffered as a result - it's a brilliant track, but I never actually play it out because it's been somewhat overexposed. Did Cubic predate Technarchy? I wouldn't be surprised if they did copy it, though - at that time relatively few people in the UK were aware of what was coming out of the US, so a lot of early UK techno producers did plagiarise a bit... He played at WANG not long ago, mostly deep house, a bit on the cheesy side (as was his "Jazz" style polo-neck), but good nonetheless. He was getting a pretty good response at the points when I wandered into that room. Dan P.S. RE: (313) 808 State
Pacific got loads of play in Detroit. Cubik got some play, but died quickly. Most people know 808 State because of Pacific, that's why they're reduced to just that track. Personally, I like Ex:El more than any other album of theirs. If they had only released instrumental versions of the tracks with the bad crooning on it... "Pacific 0101" from the Pacific 12" got loads of play on Detroit radio (there were 6 remixes of "Pacific" on that 12", I still have a cassette version of it). I do remember Gary Chandler playing "Cubik" from Ex:El back in '91-92. "Pacific 0101" is still my favorite track of all time. RE: (313) 808 State
Yeah, I think Gerald actually contributed in quite a major way to Pacific and got ripped off quite badly by the rest of the group. The earlier 808 State material is good, but it's not as good as what was coming out of Detroit and Chicago at that time - for me, it's Pacific that really differentiated them from the music coming out of the US. As the Gerald-less 808 State started trying to come up with new material, though, it all went horribly wrong, and by the time Gorgeous came out 808 State records were more useful as frisbees than as things to actually listen to...
