I have yet to buy the new album but they are also supposed to release
Prebuild on Aphex Twin Rephlex label.
More Newbuild material from the late 80's.

I disagree about that.
Exel had some excellent collaborations especially the track Ooops featuring
Bjork.
A very popular album with the alternative and industrial crowed at the time
esspecially here in the US, a ground breaking techno album.

On the contraire I don't think Georgeus is a bad album, the collaboration
with UB40 did achieve some radio success.
There is a quirkiness too a lot of the tracks, lots of Alexis SR-16.
It's like The Prodigy's Charley meets 80's New Age music.
Try mixing Nimbus and Southern Cross with new school electro.

More good records than bad records after Gerald left the band in my opinion.
By the way, 808 State have a new album out called Outpost Transmission that
just hit the stores.
I should be mail ordering a copy very soon.

i should chip in as well..

the period with just before ninety and ex:el was the best. wasn't that fond
of solaris (or what was the album after ex:el called?) with ninety and
ex:el they got more & more their own typical sound,
with olympic and lift etc. don't know even how to call it - but ninety in
it's original form (not the tommy boy us version) is the
best for me.. indeed with magical dream, donkey doctor, cobra bora and more
- only eight/nine tracks - i mean, it really was an album

my favourites were quadrastate and ninety.. agree with marsel, ninety is
still a great listen as an album - quite dark towards the end.. it was when
albums didn't have to fill an entire cd either - so it's not exhausting to
listen to, just the right length..

i'd just say that i'm not sure whether this was 808 state's "own typical
sound" as gerald was still around at the time.. i can't help but think it
all went downhill once he'd gone.. the characteristics of quadrastate and
ninety that i enjoy the most are really obvious in gerald's solo stuff on
hot lemonade and automanikk, and aren't there in 808 state once he'd gone..

and speaking of gerald we ought to mention his inertia stuff - two really
blinding twelves on retroactive and juice box..

Just some additional info on the posts made.

FSOL's took the Stakker theme from one of their previous projects, AST (see
Asus Flow). There's an old compilation out there of all their various
guises, such as Yage, Mental Cube, Stakker... basically everything key that
they did on Earthbeat.

As for A Guy Called Gerald, he did a response to what happened to him when
he left/was pushed from 808 State, called "Specific Hate", in which he uses
samples of the phone message (apparently, he was kicked from 808 State over
the phone), and he whistles the tune from Pacific State all the way through.
Not sure of the label, but I remember it had a Club as the label logo (as in
Hearts, Spades, Diamonds). Voodoo Ray got hammered, but the promo of it had
a great track "Blow Your House Down" on the flip-side, which was later
hashed into a more thumping version on the Chicago Symphony EP (red vinyl
bootleg-type affair).

As for LFO? Frequencies is probably one of the finest albums of the 90's.
LFO's "LFO" had a bit of a rough ride though, as Steve Wright ((ex-)BBC
Radio One "deejay") claimed at the time that it was the worst record he
had ever heard, but was under strict instructions to play the track, as it
had been placed on the "B"-list for airing. John Peel still gave them alot
of praise tho at the time, and rightly so. Mark Bell's gone on to do
production work for Bjork's "Homogenic" and for Depeche Mode too. Varley's
been doing work under G-Man and "presents Tony Montana", but the work is a
bit further away from LFO's roots than Varley's production work. "Track 4"
from the "LFO (Leeds Warehouse)" 12" is still a most glorious example of how
to put together atmospherics, bleep and base.

Sweet Exorcist's "Test One", that can be traced far further back... half of
Sweet Exorcist is Cabarat Voltaire's Richard H. Kirk. The Cabs "Body & Soul"
LP is probably one of the most underestimated LP's within the early stream
of techno that was coing from the UK in the early 90's. The similarities
between some of the work that Mills did with Waveform Transmissions Vol.1
and X-102 are scarey-close.

And finally... Orbital. If you get chance to dig around, pick up the two
Mutations EP's... the reworking of Chime is fantastic.

there are, for example discogs.com; there's plenty of good info there,
but there's just too much errors in there. in general there seems to be
very little possibilities verifying all entries in such system as
discogs.com (just an example); many old labels aren't around anymore
and there was plenty of similar cut up jobs (did i say bootleg?) like
the stakker humanoid mix i was talking about, without any further info;
very difficult job indeed.

so in the end we would end up speculating it anyway..

This is surely not the one you're talking about, but in 1992 the abysmal ZYX

particularly those "zipper" synth noises as popularized in a some remixes by
Joey Beltram.

You know, folks, there are discographies out there.. would save us some of

nope i'm sure it isn't that one; the mix was definitely sort of
cut'n'paste (on reel-to-reel) job between original mix and the omen
mix, mostly with pieces of the track without 303, and it was just a
little bit faster than the omen mix (probably because of reel-to-reel,
vinyl pressing, etc). i called my friend and he said that the a-side has
original mix and the strange mix on b-side is "the other mix". forgot to
ask the year though, but definitely '88/'89 era.

oh, and everyone, please remember; "Humanoid" is the artist, "Stakker
Humanoid" is the track name :)

The new one is a mixed bag - great sitar playing, incredible production but
godawful prog-rock singing from Cobain himself - extremely self-indulgent
stuff - but it's no surprise from someone who has been holed up in his
studio for three years drinking his own urine.

Cubik was 1990 as well. really I think the 'which came first' debate is a
bit overblown with these two songs though, as neither bassline is really a
triumph of melodic construction. It was more about the production. I mean,
it's a 2-bar loop, and just think of the countless spawn that imitated, if
not copied it.

I think at best "Technarchy" and "Cubik" were concurrent -- kinda like the

All this reminiscing--I remember being at the Shelter for Gerald's live show

RE: (313) 808 State

2002-12-13 Thread Craig Harrison
Hehe - knew Mark Archer pretty well (I was at Uni and lived in Stafford for
a few years after). He used to get all the Transmat tracks through Network,
but worse still was the fact that he had 2 copies of Techno : The New Dance
Sound Of Detroit, and the only way that he would give me one was if I got
him a 12" copy of "Summertime" (yes... that Will Smith person). Also went
around his house while he was doing a remix of a Michelle Gayle
(ex-Eastenders) track, but said that he wasn't enjoying it... only after
hearing the vocal that they'd sent him could you understand why. Never heard
singing so bad.

Never met Chris Peat (knowingly at least). I know that his brother did some
time for dealing tho.

It summed it all up when Mark was asked to respond to what the tabloids were
saying at the time, and that Stafford was "Techno City"... he said.. the
only thing techno about Stafford is the lifts in the local shopping centre.

BTW. If anyone is interested, http://www.aeonflux.co.uk - it's playing most
of the artists mentioned (LFO, 808 State, Sweet Exorcist, A Guy Called
Gerald ("Blow Your House Down" is on there too). Scroll down a bit on the
main page, and you'll see the artists on the play list.

Cubik was 1990 as well. really I think the 'which came first' debate is a
bit overblown with these two songs though, as neither bassline is really a
triumph of melodic construction. It was more about the production. I mean,
it's a 2-bar loop, and just think of the countless spawn that imitated, if

2002-12-13 Thread Odeluga, Ken
You know, we shouldn't be too hard on ourselves (in Europe you mean). A lot
of that hardcore has deep roots in the US industrial movement which
definitely predates even many people on this list! Granted, there were a lot
of Europeans doing the same thing, but I'd say it's quite difficult to draw
a distinct line and be able to say: 'it was *you* what started it!'

Also re. hardcore, remember Generator-era Oldham and his little stable? It's
not like we were marauding Saxons going over and deflowering this lovely
music, it worked both ways (that Oldham fellow mindful of getting a
kick in the head next time I see him, here ;) what a sterling chap! - err,
joshing.

"Dreaming Detroit" - Marco Passarani (& someone else) Generaror, 1995,
getting hard, but bloody good - *and* soulful.

If you get chance, try and look for AST (Art Science Technology) - "Asus
Flow". It came out before Stakker was released on Westside (I think). There
are quite a few remix 12"'s of Humanoid tho.. the Plump DJ's mix that's used
in Wipeout Fusion is a real tasty affair.

I'm still trying to hunt down a copy of the video they did shortly after...
If you see something called "Stakker Eurotechno" or something like that,
grab it and hold tight. It later got used by Pot Noodle over in the UK.

RE: (313) 808 State (and A Guy Called Gerald, FSOL, LFO, Sweet Exorcist & Orbital)

2002-12-13 Thread Craig Harrison

I think the first album 'Accelerator' holds up well today. 'While Others
Cry' is brilliant. For about a decade I've been living an unfulfilled
fantasy, waiting for them to make something for the dancefloor again.
Something tells me I will not live to see that day...

I read an interview with them a few months ago (can't find it for the life
of me) where they said they thought the first album didn't date so well, but
they still enjoy a few songs. They're crazy.

i suspect kenny larkins first record was inspired by a todd terry acid house

It wasn't number one, but it was fairly successful in the charts. I can
listen to it fairly easy, but prefer the versions without the synth-sax
bit (which reminds me a bit of Guru Josh sometimes). Overexposure to the
track is probably what makes it difficult for you to listen to!

It's the same with LFO "LFO", which did well in the charts and kind of
suffered as a result - it's a brilliant track, but I never actually play
it out because it's been somewhat overexposed.

Did Cubic predate Technarchy? I wouldn't be surprised if they did copy
it, though - at that time relatively few people in the UK were aware of
what was coming out of the US, so a lot of early UK techno producers did
plagiarise a bit...

Most people know 808 State because of Pacific, that's why they're reduced to
just that track.

Personally, I like Ex:El more than any other album of theirs. If they had
only released instrumental versions of the tracks with the bad crooning on

the most detroit related record however is quadrastate.
the music they did from 93 (including the gorgeous

i am wondering about many people reducing this band

2002-12-13 Thread Niko Tzoukmanis
speaking of 808 state, i really love them and i like all
of their albums, but 90 is their best in my opinion-
the most detroit related record however is quadrastate.
the music they did from 93 (including the gorgeous
album) takes quite a while to get into, you really should
love them if you intend to buy them, same with their
brand new album 'outpost transmission', released on
circus (!)
i am wondering about many people reducing this band
to pacific, they've done a lot of other anthems, olympic
for example is a great one too !!

He DJed at a Theory-organised party called Retrovert in London, alongside
Mark Broom and Ben Sims a month or so ago, but I never went in that room so
I can't comment on what he played. I think he is still on a D'n'B tip.

btw, while we're on the subject, does anyone know what Gerald's up to?

Last I heard he was living in NYC, but then my mate said he saw him in

Is he still doing his Juicebox thing? Anyone know?

He had quite a few gigs in London around November. Kept missing him though,
so can't report on the music played. At least one night was one of the drum
'n bass nights at The End, so he hasn't given up on that.

UTD.90 was the Tommy Boy version of album 90 with lots of extra tracks and
"State to State" is the last track from that album.

The track with techno city is called Donkey Doctor.

"Pacific 0101" from the Pacific 12" got loads of play on Detroit radio
(there were 6 remixes of "Pacific" on that 12", I still have a cassette
version of it). I do remember Gary Chandler playing "Cubik" from Ex:El back
in '91-92.

"Pacific 0101" is still my favorite track of all time. I doubt anything can
replace it.

Just been reading the Blake Baxter interview on Overloads and there seems to
be an loads of references to 808 State in Detroit techno, so I like to hear
some of thier material - which albums would you readers recomend ?

Have to agree except for 'Cleo Leo'. That song has always stood out as the
track on Ex:el for me, but no matter how much I try to enjoy 'Oops' or
'Spanish Heart', it just isn't happening. :(

Cubik was a classic at Medusa's in Chicago around '90 and received
consistent play well into '91. Probably the first techno other than New Beat
I ever heard.

*slaps head* This all stems from me having copied that album onto a 90
minute tape when it came out, and sticking Pacific on that tape too...

Ah, I wasn't sure if it had even come out on vinyl. I visited the US in
1990 or 1991 and got it on tape - I think the "State to State" thing
comes from a track on that album, and that it's actually called UTD.90.
I've destroyed too many brain cells in the intervening years, I think! I
lost all my tapes years ago, so will definitely look for it on vinyl -
the track that samples techno city was pretty nice I think (and back
then I didn't know about Cybotron, so presumed it was actually them...)

RE: (313) 808 State

2002-12-13 Thread Brendan Nelson
Yeah, I think Gerald actually contributed in quite a major way to
Pacific and got ripped off quite badly by the rest of the group. The
earlier 808 State material is good, but it's not as good as what was
coming out of Detroit and Chicago at that time - for me, it's Pacific
that really differentiated them from the music coming out of the US.

As the Gerald-less 808 State started trying to come up with new
material, though, it all went horribly wrong, and by the time Gorgeous
came out 808 State records were more useful as frisbees than as things
to actually listen to... (imho!)
