Re: OSPF aggreation question [7:26091]

2001-11-15 Thread Mark Paterson

Ok Here it is, this is how we tackled the OSPF Aggregation problem.

To properly aggregate addresses within an internal type OSPF advertisement
you must use the Area x range statement, this would not work because of the
multi area setup and non-contiguous addresses.
Stabilization of area 0 was a must because of the service provider
environment, as well Link state changes would be constant due to customer
networks. This would prevent us from using standard type areas due to
routing table size and link state flapping. We needed to reduce the size of
area 0 with summarization on the ABR's and keep all routes local to the
areas to reduce the overall size of the routing table. We used NSSA areas
because of one major feature "type 7 LSA's". What this allowed us to do is
convert all routes to external type routes and aggregate the mutli areas on
the ABR's. External type routes can be summarized using a summary statement
with the summary being non area specific. To do this within an NSSA area you
simply add the statement redistribute connected with some sort of filter
like a prefix list and route map combination to prevent un-wanted routes, If
you have any static routes you redistribute the static routes with the
redistribute static statement with the same sort of filter control. This
will convert all the area routes to type 7 LSA's (which are external) and
allow you to summarize the routes with the summary-address command.

Cool Huh ...
Mark

To be honest, it the easiest test at Sylvan. You should be more worried

RE: about BGP [7:26353]

2001-11-15 Thread Hire, Ejay

To Configure BGP on Non-directly connected neighbors, you use the following
command

Router bgp AS
neigbor X.X.X.X ebgp-multihop N

Where:
AS is your AS number
X.X.X.X is the Ip address of the remote Peer
N is the maximum number of hops between the 2 peers (N is reccomended but
not required.)

Good Luck,
Ejay

My suggestion would be to turn off WFQ. I don't believe it's
recommended on really high speed interfaces. I think FIFO is a better
option for a FastEthernet link and I've read that WFQ in that situation
can actually cause some performance degradation.

Do you have a need for weighted queueing on this interface?

RE: about BGP [7:26353]

2001-11-15 Thread Kane, Christopher A.

BGP rides on top of TCP and BGP's default TTL is 1. Therefore to run BGP you
must be directly connected, unless you implement ebgp multi-hop. Which
allows you to reconfigure BGP's TTL value so that you may establish a BGP
session with that neighbor that is not directly connected.

OSPF transit areas across non-OSPF interfaces [7:26377]

2001-11-15 Thread Danny Cox

I'm really quite confused by this. I am working through a lab currently
which uses OSPF, EIGRP and BGP. I haven't reached the BGP bit yet which
is okay, but there is an OSPF/EIGRP bit I don't get.

++   +---+  +---+
 | | | |
   +-+ | +---+
 R1| s0 |s1 |---| s0| | s1 | R2
   +-+ | +---+
 | | | |
  OSPF | EIGRP| OSPF | | OSPF
  AREA 1 | | AREA 0| | AREA 2
++   +---+  +---+

I realise that if R1-S1s network were placed into Area 0 then everything
would flood through regardless of EIGRP. If I put R1-S1 into another
OSPF Area - 3 say - then I could set up a virtual link.

As this lab is presented to me, neither of those are options. In effect
I want to use EIGRP as a transit area to allow the OSPF Area1 to connect
to the OSPF Area0.

How do I do this? I have searched quite hard around the web and come
up with nothing other than virtual-links through an OSPF area which is
a technology I understand - in concept at least.

Anyone point me to anything to explain this?

cheers
Danny

Ah, the intolerance of it all...

I answered this guy because he needed help. I did the research long ago,
and put him in the ballpark. Of course, the rest of the knowledge is up to
him. By the .signature involved I surmised this was a 'working stiff'.
Have a little empathy.

Some here have exhibited 'righteous indignation' towards those who would
defile real or imagined standards placed by real or imagined judges.
Reminds me of fundamentalist everywhere. How easy it is to generalize real
people by the general "they". Who knows? Someday, "they" may be "you".

The amount of energy devoted to trite answers and holier-than-thou elitism
far outweighs any perceived good. (Hey, I had some fun looking it up again,
myself.)

Besides, it violates one of the great training principles, "There are no
dumb questions!"

You are indeed correct. Posting questions here is a way of finding
information on the internet. It's the lazy persons way! Why take an hour
or two to look something up on your own when you can post a question here in
one minute and have someone else provide the answer?

The ability to research a problem and identify possible solultions on ones
own is a critical skill for networkers. Do you think a CCIE just posts a
question here every time they come across something they are not familiar
with? I don't think so! If you want to encourage people to post questions
here without doing research, that's up to you but you're not doing them a
favor. All you're teaching them is when confronted with a problem... ASK
SOMEONE ELSE!

OT - List of dirty words [7:26380]

2001-11-15 Thread Dennis Laganiere

This is totally off-topic, and I realize it's lazy to ask help so quickly,
but this seems like an interesting quest.

I need to populate my e-mail filters for dirty words, racial epitaphs and
other offensive nonsense.

Before I corrupt my pure and uncommonly sin-free soul by spending hours
typing every foul thing I can think of, does anybody know of a webpage that
I can cut and paste something, or perhaps e-mail me off-line what you've
accumulated in the past?

Again, let me apologize for the OT, but hey, the sooner I get this lame task
done, the sooner I can power up my pod and contribute some relevant material
to the group.

Thank you in advance for your assistance, and I'm waiting in trepidation to

Re: OSPF transit areas across non-OSPF interfaces [7:26377]

2001-11-15 Thread John Neiberger

Hmm interesting.

If you *didn't* connect your area 1 to the other ospf area 0, you could
redistribute ospf into eigrp on R1 and then from eigrp to ospf on R2.
Is that an option?

The ospf process on R1 wouldn't even need to be aware of area 0 if it's
the only area existing on the left hand side of your diagram.

Another option occurs to me but I've never attempted it, I don't have
any idea if it would work, and who knows the chaos that might ensue if
you try it. Could you set up an ip-over-ip tunnel over the eigrp link
and place that tunnel in area 0?

Attempt that at your own risk. I'm not sure what effect it will have
on routing. It may quickly turn into a quagmire depending on which
routes you're learning from eigrp.

I hope someone else posts a simpler, more elegant solution. To be
honest, I'm not exactly certain what you're trying to accomplish. Can
you explain more about the goal of this scenario? Do you know the skill
they're trying to test with this problem?

Good luck!

RE: "QuizWare" vs. "Boson" [7:26361]

2001-11-15 Thread juno vtv

I've personally used both. Quizware is cheaper, you get 500 questions for
$49.99 or something like that. Both use the Boson engine. But I feel that
the Boson exams offer better quality. The questions make you think. I feel
that quizware follow more of the blueprint than boson. Boson helps
reinforce what you learn. If I have to choose, it's boson all the way.

2001-11-15 Thread Danny Cox

Thanks for the reply John. I was a bit bemused by it too. I suspect
I've either missed the point completely or it's about redistribution,
but I had thought about tunnelling too. I've reread through the lab
itself and realise that I've misread it - the whole OSPF AS *is*
connected together and the point is to redistribute into EIGRP to
other routers in the EIGRP AS. My mistake.

I would like to understand though whether it is possible, regardless
of this lab to connect OSPF Areas to Area0 via other than another
OSPF Area and a virtual link!

cheers and thanks for the thoughts - any ideas on the non-ospf
transit area would be interesting, or to be slapped down and told
I misunderstand completely would be useful likewise!

Well as it would turn out it's my turn to write that awesome email... I
just got back from RTP today where after checking my email, I was awarded
CCIE#8387. What a journey/process this has been and I must say that I'm
relieved that it's now over. After countless hours of study and practicing
on the "rack" the reward was most definitely worth the sacrifice.

I didn't sleep a any last night as I awaited the results of my lab score
which I was unable to check until 12 noon today. So on that note I'm off to
catch up on the sleep that escaped me last night.

More to follow once I get rested up..

http://www.google.com has lots of links. Did you try there? Also,
keep in mind that "diryt words" are not simply what we would consider
to be foul language. Dirty words define words that your company
would not want passing through your content scanner, and are even
in this context, not set in stone. Example, I may not want mail with
the word "resume" in the subject leaving my network, but have no
objections to such mail coming in. I might object to web content with
the words "sex" involved incoming and outgoing, and so on.

To limit your request to vulgarity limits the scope of your effectiveness
greatly.

RE: OT - List of dirty words [7:26380]

2001-11-15 Thread Hartnell, George

Speaking as the chief "smut-buster" at my site for the fed's typical effort
with the "Children's Internet Protection Act", you have a hard road coming.
This is a high-profile and thankless duty.

My solution is to go to a commercial provider, make it very clear that the
filtering choice is their responsibility, and keep my head down. Otherwise,
you need a 'committee' to share the wealth of abuse you're about to take.

As for actual words, the aforementioned commercial provider gave up on the
word game; too many variables, at least in the html filter land.

And, as a 20 year commercial fisher with a few additional commercial diving
years thrown in for good measure, I can assure you that "sin-free souls"
have little chance covering truly depraved language. Given that vast
expertise, and the obvious relevance to CCIE-type expertise, I'd be happy to
provide you that information for standard CCIE rates---not!

Your best bet might be George Carlin's list of "Seven words you can't say on
television."

Very best, G.

2001-11-15 Thread TALBOT, WILLIAM P (SWBT)

You knew it had to happen...OK if the response was an attempt to be
sarcastic, please ignore the following:

First, if you didn't want to deal with the off topic post, the subject of
Dennis' post was:

OT - List of dirty words ("OT" stands for Off Topic)

Second, Dennis seems to be trying to come up with a list of objectionable
words with which to filter his own email client, not a corporate email
platform. He does not wish to recreate the wheel and type every known
obscenity into his profanity filter by hand.

Third, Did *you* check google.com? I did. What I didn't find was
anyone posting a list of a hundred or more obscene words in a file for
anyone to download. (Maybe fifty or so though... ;-) One reason for
that might be that if *I* can download them that easily, maybe 8 year
old Johnny can too! ;-)

(The rest of this is for Dennis..)

Hey Dennis, George Carlin provided the FCC with a list once...they
really do have a "official" list. I will post five words, sanitized
of course...

#$%^
&^*(
!@$#
#@$%
$%^&

OK, enough of the fun. I am going back to work now

P.S. - Thanks for your R&S CramSession. I used it some to help pass
the exam.

It would be very interesting if posted to the proper group. This, sadly,
is not such a group.

http://www.google.com has lots of links.

To limit your request to vulgarity limits the scope of your effectiveness
greatly.

task

Your future plans to contribute topcial matter are not sufficient to excuse
such an imposition on my napping.

RE: PIX line up protocol down [7:26349]

2001-11-15 Thread Scott Nawalaniec

Kent,

I hope I get to contribute.

Check the cable. I have seen in the past problems were the link lights on
the ethernet interface would be on but one of the pins 1,2,3,6 was cut, but
there was no communication. Also, set both the switch and router to 100/FD
if the switch can support it. Check to see if ethernet 0 has the right
encapsulation, ARPA.

"line protocol is {up | down | administratively down}
Indicates whether the software processes that handle the line protocol
believe the interface is usable (that is, whether keepalives are successful)
or if it has been taken down by an administrator"

If I left anything out to check, or please correct me if I am wrong.

Scott

Subject: PIX line up protocol down [7:26349]

Hi Guys

I have a pix 520 that has 3 interfaces configured. Ethernet 1 and 2 are
normal and have line up, protocol up. Ethernet 0 is down with line up ,
protocol down. There is a link light on both the Ethernet 0 interface
and switch port. This is not a duplex issue since I have already set the

Ethernet 0 interface to auto negotiate and back to 100full.
Has anybody got any ideas??

Yes. First of all, you need to configure that one thing correctly. You
can't use that keyword there, it will break that other thing.

Second, you need to replace that other thing with a new model. That
old model doesn't support what you're trying to do with it.

Third, scrap your config completely and practice multihoming with BGP,
or perhaps attempt back-to-back token ring in your home lab.

Re: where exactly is the equipment replicated ? [7:26243]

2001-11-15 Thread Priscilla Oppenheimer

My point, (other than a feeble attempt at humor related to the Guide), was
that we couldn't decode a paragraph that he grabbed from the Internet
anymore than we can answer what does 42 mean.

I don't expect everyone to research every question. We wouldn't exist as a
group if that were possible. But I do expect people to apply some logic. If
you want help, you have to give us enough information to help you. In this
case he could have told us where he got the paragraph, what was the
previous paragraph, what's the title of the page, etc.

Maybe he wasn't a native English speaker and thought that we could help
because we didn't have to translate. That's a fair excuse. But I didn't
want to say that because some people would be sensitive about such
assumptions, (plus his English was fine.)

Well, back to your regularly scheduled program. I apologize for wasting
bandwidth on meta-topics, but this is called proactive bandwidth
management. Maybe if we can advise people on how best to use this group,
then less bandwidth will be wasted in the future. Or maybe not...

Cheers. Don't yell at me! Thanks. ;-)

RE: All you veterans... [7:26301]

2001-11-15 Thread Estes, Timothy R.

I contacted Cisco, the Veterans Administration and the California Department
of Veterans Affairs about this subject in July. Unfortunately I haven't hear
anything in a while.

The VA advised me that for veterans to be reimbursed for the Cisco Career
Certification program, the program would have to be "accredited" by the
state Department of Veterans Affairs in the state where Cisco's headquarters
resides.

I contacted the California Department of Veterans affairs and found them to
be very cooperative. They wished to be put in contact with the correct
people at Cisco, so I gave them all of the contact info I could from my
perspective.

After a couple of weeks, I received the following email from Cisco
([EMAIL PROTECTED])...

>Dear Timothy,

>Cisco Career Certifications

I have no idea what the status of Cisco's application is. I hope them get it
approved soon, I have the 4 CCNP test to go!

Maybe as a group we could use our collective resources to expedite this
application?

You've been selling your labs since July and no one
has passed using them? I'd say they are a complete
waste of money if that's the case. I've met the guys
from ccbootcamp and I guarantee they run a first class
operation. I think the smartest move is to use what
has a proven track record in the CCIE process.

RE: what would u do when u bored [7:3784]

2001-11-15 Thread COULOMBE, TROY

Bored?? H...
Assumption #1: You are working as some type of network engineer & have
access to the network
Assumption #2: You have a sniffer [I love NAI Sniffer Pro--Distributed is
even better...]

Sniff all the different segments on you network. Create filters to filter
out "types" of traffic. An example is create a filter looking for _only_
DNS failures. I just recently found a piece of "spyware" that AT&T's ISP
dialer software that was sending out dns querries for
ibmxxx.inverse.net...where xxx was 001 through 009. They all fail...and the
dialer software just kept rolling thru the numbers indefinately while the
user was dialed up [and connected to our VPN] [the solution was to upgrade
the software]...

Look of _ICMP_ traffic... see what you see...

Look at whatever routing protocol you use [ospf is the most _fun_]...what
can you deduce from the traces...

and then there is _SNMP_ traffic...always fun to catch...suprising how much
info is sent in plaintext...

and then there is just catching those boxen that have shitty [excuse my
canadian-french] drivers...they don't window, or cause excessive
retrans...etc...

I make it 75% of my job to sniff...PRO-ACTIVE is key to a happy network...

now if only all the users would get off my network, it would be fine ;-)

Re: "QuizWare" vs. "Boson" [7:26361]

2001-11-15 Thread Richard Deal

To all,

I'm an author for QuizWare for Cisco tests and I can say that ALL my tests
have COMPLETELY different questions than Boson. The test engine used by
QuizWare is the same engine that Boson uses. Actually, QuizWare is a channel
partner of Boson. QuizWare caters, for the most part, to authors that want
to develop customized tests. Boson restricts their test prices to $39.95 and
the number of questions per test to about 200. QuizWare has no such
restriction, so an author could charge $1,000 per test and put 10,000
questions in it. The tests that I have written for QuizWare have at least
500 questions each and only cost $49.95. Plus, I have a special of buy 3,
get the 4th free.

Hope this helps!

Well, yes. But to coin a phrase, and to put it into a better context,
what problem are you trying to solve? I find people learn better
when they have a goal in mind, then look at configuration
alternatives and how they relate to the problem.

RE: where exactly is the equipment replicated ? [7:26243]

2001-11-15 Thread Chuck Larrieu

memory is hazy. in the original radio broadcast, there is much to do made
about "the answer". those seeking learn that the answer to "life, the
universe, and everything" is 42 and they realize it makes no sense. they are
told that the answer makes perfect sense if they ask the right question.
they commission the mice to run another computer study to derive the
question. the program is terminated prematurely when the Volgons (?) destroy
Earth 5 minutes too soon, which was the impetus that began Ford Prefect's
adventures, and his discoveries of the true purpose of the earth and all it
contains.

My recollection is that we never do learn the question, and therefore are
left with an answer that is totally meaningless, even if it is "the answer".

I've always enjoyed the delicious irony of hearing people throw out "42" as
the answer, wondering if said speaker understands that without knowing the
proper question, the "answer" indeed is meaningless.

in my student days there was an apocryphal story making the rounds about the
philosophy professor whose final consisted of one question: "why?"

the only A was given to the student who answered "because!"

if only router configurations were so open ended

Hi.

I am trying to configure two routers as BGP peers . Routers (both) are on
the same LAN but in diffrent subnetworks. I mean, routers can ping eachother
, since there is another router between them. But , they can not establish
BGP connection as two neighbours. Does that mean they have to be dirctly
connected to eachother.?

The TS statements both match on both ends.

We have the same type of PVC with same CIR and other parameters
going to other sites and using the same TS configuration.

And no frame fragmentations.

I do have it schduled to swap this router out
within 2 weeks. I am hoping it is either the router or
the local cabling to the router.

We could not get the regular 1720 that we wanted to deploy until Dec so we
have a temp 2501 that the local field company used and I do not know how
steady this router is.

thanks
Paul

memory is hazy. in the original radio broadcast, there is much to do made
about "the answer". those seeking learn that the answer to "life, the
universe, and everything" is 42 and they realize it makes no sense. they
are
told that the answer makes perfect sense if they ask the right question.
they commission the mice to run another computer study to derive the
question. the program is terminated prematurely when the Volgons (?)
destroy
Earth 5 minutes too soon, which was the impetus that began Ford Prefect's
adventures, and his discoveries of the true purpose of the earth and all it
contains.

My recollection is that we never do learn the question, and therefore are
left with an answer that is totally meaningless, even if it is "the
answer".

I've always enjoyed the delicious irony of hearing people throw out "42" as
the answer, wondering if said speaker understands that without knowing the
proper question, the "answer" indeed is meaningless.

in my student days there was an apocryphal story making the rounds about
the
philosophy professor whose final consisted of one question: "why?"

the only A was given to the student who answered "because!"

if only router configurations were so open ended

That was when Arthur started pulling scrabble tiles out of his rabbit skin
bag. (just re-read the whole thing when my 13 year-old daughter bought me
the whole series) It just goes to show that if the question where known
that the Universe would be replaced by something even more bizarre. But
Many would argue this has already happened.

PIX DMZ Issue [7:26419]

2001-11-15 Thread Ali, Abbas

I have a problem with DMZ configuration.

Here is the scenerio.

DMZ port has UNIX Sendmail Server.
IP Address 206.2.34.1
Internal Port has Exchange Server.
IP Address 206.6.182.75

Here is what I did to make it work.
static (dmz,outside) 155.254.128.7 206.2.34.1 netmask 255.255.255.255 0 0

static (inside,dmz) 206.6.182.75 206.6.182.75 netmask 255.255.255.255 0 0

conduit permit tcp host 155.254.128.7 eq smtp any

conduit permit tcp host 206.6.182.75 eq smtp host 206.2.34.1.

This is the basic configuration, Customer has an NIS (UNIX) server which is
on Internal network at the address 206.6.181.1 and contains all the
databases for various applications including the Sendmail server on a dmz
port.

The sendmail server on dmz port can't come online until it contacts the NIS
server on Internal network, and because of the PIX it will not allow polling
to work from dmz port to the internal port unless some static mappings and
conduit permissions are allowed. How do I reslove this issue with three
things.

First Sendmail server to contact NIS server at Internal port and then to
deliver emails to exchange box.

Has anyone got any information/links on how to configure a window2000 cert
server to enroll a pix?? The TAC is informative enough about the pix side
of things and offers a decent link to the MS site, but there is no mention
that I can find of how to create a CEP compatible certificate for the pix...

any help much appreciated.

I am preparing for the lab test and considering to take a training class,
even though I have a pretty good home lab and access to all types of
equipment at work.

I wonder if anyone can recommand a good train class.

show int | include ... [7:26422]

2001-11-15 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

I wanted to play around with the | include option on the show command, but I
can't get it to do what I want, and I can't find any docs on it.

I want to include the interface and description of all FastEthernet
interfaces.

If I do a

show int | include FastEthernet

it will show the line where it says FastEthernet for all FastEthernet
interfaces.

Example:

SANTA#show int | include FastEthernet
FastEthernet0/1 is up, line protocol is up
FastEthernet0/2 is up, line protocol is up
FastEthernet0/3 is down, line protocol is down
FastEthernet0/4 is down, line protocol is down
FastEthernet0/5 is down, line protocol is down
FastEthernet0/6 is up, line protocol is up
FastEthernet0/7 is up, line protocol is up
FastEthernet0/8 is up, line protocol is up
FastEthernet0/9 is up, line protocol is up
FastEthernet0/10 is down, line protocol is down
FastEthernet0/11 is down, line protocol is down
FastEthernet0/12 is up, line protocol is up

If I do a

show int | include Description

it will show the line where there is a description for all interfaces.

Example:

SANTA#show int | include Description
Description: LINK TO SWITCH IN SUITE 1209
Description: LINK TO HUB IN SUITE 1303
  Description: HP LaserJet 4 Plus
  Description: HP DeskJet 930C
  Description: FIREWALL
  Description: Dave
  Description: Cindy
  Description: Lauren
  Description: Sharon

But, how do I get both?

I have tried the following with out luck:

show int | include FastEthernet Description
show int | include FastEthernet , Description
show int | include FastEthernet | Description
show int | include FastEthernet | include Description
show int | include FastEthernet include Description

This is one of those stupid command options you've seen so many times, but
never used.

Any comments?

Thanks in advance,

Ole

Re: Mac Address filtering on a 3512XL [7:26398]

2001-11-15 Thread Ken Diliberto

Yes, I do have a goal in mind. I just purchased some wireless equipment and
would like to restrict the MAC addresses allowed in. 40 bit encryption is
not good enough for the paranoid like me. It seems the network name is
advertised. To me, that security really sucks.

Besides, it's another challenge. Next, maybe a VPN tunnel. :-)

Well, yes. But to coin a phrase, and to put it into a better context,
what problem are you trying to solve? I find people learn better
when they have a goal in mind, then look at configuration
alternatives and how they relate to the problem.

Re: show int | include ... [7:26422]

2001-11-15 Thread John Neiberger

The include option works like grep in unix. AFAIK, there is no way to
do what you want from the command line.

You could add the words "FastEthernet" to each description! :-)

Then, show int | inc FastEthernet would work.

Cache/Congent Engine and DS3 Issue [7:26427]

2001-11-15 Thread Thad Gaston

Hello,

I wanted to know if anyone has experienced any issues with slow internet
response after installing a Content/Cache Engine 509? I recently
installed on on an Internet Router with a DS3. Internet response slowed
down significantly. Whereas pages would time out and users complained.

The slowstart feature is enabled as well. I did however come accross a
FAQ stating that there should be DNS pointer records for the
Cache/Content Engine. Any advice/experience?

Re: CCIE Lab Preparation Workbook [7:24920]

2001-11-15 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

All,

Currently I am using the IPexpert.net lab as part of my preperation. I am
also getting ready for my second attempt at the one day lab. Having been
through the new format, I am very comfortable that the IPexpert.net
materials cover a VERY LARGE portion of the material you will need to know
for the lab.

That being said I don't think any one lab manual will catch all the unusual
stuff you could be presented with on the actual test, but you will have a
solid chance.

The book is decieving small in size. It takes FOREVER to actually go
through it.Worth every penny.

You might be surprised just how much IS-IS you understand, if you already

RE: Mac Address filtering on a 3512XL [7:26398]

2001-11-15 Thread Chuck Larrieu

Ken, this comes up regularly with customers who want to do wireless, as if
wireless will solve some great problem of theirs. well, in the case of my
customers, there are indeed some great vertical applications that make this
a wonderful technology. but...

yes, mac filtering is one way to provide some modicum of security. spoofing
mac's is not the first thing that enters the hacker's mind, so I've heard,
but I would not rely on any one method to ensure a secure net. remember that
there are several "wireless sniffers" available, so mac information can be
decoded, and later spoofed.

some folks I have spoken with do a number of things, including WEP, LEAP,
and IPSec or L2TP from the wireless end device into the network, end to end.
some folks go so far as to encrypt everything on storage devices, so that
even if the wireless authentication is broken, it does hacker no good.

if your app is hand-held based these may not be options. then you are back
to the mac filtering. still, you might want to think about upping to 128 WEP
anyway. how concerned are you about the integrity and confidentiality of the
data going over the wireless? more so or less so than if that same data were
available via VPN across the internet or via dial up access?

Yes, I do have a goal in mind. I just purchased some wireless equipment and
would like to restrict the MAC addresses allowed in. 40 bit encryption is
not good enough for the paranoid like me. It seems the network name is
advertised. To me, that security really sucks.

Besides, it's another challenge. Next, maybe a VPN tunnel. :-)

Well, yes. But to coin a phrase, and to put it into a better context,
what problem are you trying to solve? I find people learn better
when they have a goal in mind, then look at configuration
alternatives and how they relate to the problem.

Try ctrl-d, enter, etc. If it does not work, it might just be a bad
one. I did an audit with a pile of these darn bay stacks, and some of them
would just REFUSE to work. Of course, since we audited so many of them,
80% of them were consoleable, the others failed. Ah well.

RE: Mac Address filtering on a 3512XL [7:26398]

2001-11-15 Thread Andras Bellak

Welcome to the next big security nightmare. There are so many issues
with trying to secure the access point, at some point you'll just want
to sit in a corner with your arms around your knees rocking. In the
meantime, here are a couple of thoughts/issues to look at.

1. Running WEP is almost useless. At least with WEP you've left the key
under the doormat, not in the lock. One issue that you'll run across
with higher encryption levels with WEP is the variance in network card
software across manufacturers. Of the 4 different cards that we've had
on the network here, we've had 4 sets of maximum and minimum key
lengths, and there is no happy medium.

2. Running MAC filtering is good, if you want to keep track of all the
MACs that you'll end up with. Anyone who has ever worked a network that
used it's own MAC scheme knows what I'm talking about. Another issue
that we've run into with MAC filtering is the lack of ease of
distributing your filter list across multiple access points. (I'm a bit
of a hypocrite - we use MAC filtering on our network ;-} )

3. The ability to disable responding to a broadcast on your access point
is a great start. Our Orinoco (I know, Avaya sucks) access points have a
setting that tells the unit to not respond to any requests unless the
card is set with the same network name as the base station. This won't
stop somebody sniffing, but it does hide the unit from the apps that
initially find the access points.

4. Accept that you'll have to use a different method for security, and
plan your platform/app around it. We have had great success with Movian
on our WinCE handhelds, connecting to an interface on a VPN-3030 in
order to access the network. I know that this setup also works with a
PIX, as it was our test environment.

5. Watch out for cars with funny antennas and laptops on the front seat.
(#3 takes care of part of this problem.)

That all said, I think we as industry professionals have a lot to learn
about deploying a secure wireless network. I do know that whenever I
deploy one, I start the design process by putting on my paranoid hat.

Good luck, and good learning.

Andras

I want to include the interface and description of all FastEthernet
interfaces.

If I do a

 show int | include FastEthernet

it will show the line where it says FastEthernet for all FastEthernet
interfaces.

Example:

SANTA#show int | include FastEthernet
FastEthernet0/1 is up, line protocol is up
FastEthernet0/2 is up, line protocol is up
FastEthernet0/3 is down, line protocol is down
FastEthernet0/4 is down, line protocol is down
FastEthernet0/5 is down, line protocol is down
FastEthernet0/6 is up, line protocol is up
FastEthernet0/7 is up, line protocol is up
FastEthernet0/8 is up, line protocol is up
FastEthernet0/9 is up, line protocol is up
FastEthernet0/10 is down, line protocol is down
FastEthernet0/11 is down, line protocol is down
FastEthernet0/12 is up, line protocol is up

If I do a

 show int | include Description

it will show the line where there is a description for all interfaces.

Example:

SANTA#show int | include Description
Description: LINK TO SWITCH IN SUITE 1209
Description: LINK TO HUB IN SUITE 1303
  Description: HP LaserJet 4 Plus
  Description: HP DeskJet 930C
  Description: FIREWALL
  Description: Dave
  Description: Cindy
  Description: Lauren
  Description: Sharon

But, how do I get both?

I have tried the following with out luck:

show int | include FastEthernet Description
show int | include FastEthernet , Description
show int | include FastEthernet | Description
show int | include FastEthernet | include Description
show int | include FastEthernet include Description

This is one of those stupid command options you've seen so many times, but

Any comments?

OK. I'll assume the filter is at the ingress switch, and you want to
use the source address as a safeguard.

First, let's review the command:

access-list access-list-number {permit | deny} address mask
700-799

what confuses some people is the address is the 48-bit MAC
address and the mask is also 48 bits. Otherwise, the masking logic is
just like an IP access list.

Let's say you want to permit all sources with the Cisco manufacturer
code 0c (there are others). You don't care what the other 24 bits
are.

Therefore, your access list rule would be

access-list 700 permit .0c00. .00FF.

You could have an access-list rule for each device, with a
.. mask. Think long and hard about how you would maintain
that

The include option works like grep in unix. AFAIK, there is no way to
do what you want from the command line.

You could add the words "FastEthernet" to each description! :-)

Then, show int | inc FastEthernet would work.

RE: help me set clock on router [7:26435]

2001-11-15 Thread Scott Nawalaniec

HK,

To the best of my knowledge, 25x, 26x, 36x don't have a battery, like in a
computer, to keep the clock setting. When you power down the router the time
is lost. You could set your routers up to use ntp (network time protocol)
and run the ntp server on your computer or something. In my case, I setup
one of the main routers to be a master time server, and have all of my
routers pull their time from the main router. Then you just have to change
the time on one router instead of all. Be aware that the NTP protocol will
take some bandwidth, but I don't think it would be much.

Does anybody else have any thoughts?

Hope this helps,

Scott

RE: Mac Address filtering on a 3512XL [7:26398]

2001-11-15 Thread Andras Bellak

I missed something in my last reply that some folks might not take for
granted - once you have sniffed the mac address of a wireless card,
changing your card to match is simple - I did it on a card integrated
into a notebook inside of 30 seconds - you set it in the GUI even.

Ken, this comes up regularly with customers who want to do wireless, as
if
wireless will solve some great problem of theirs. well, in the case of
my
customers, there are indeed some great vertical applications that make
this
a wonderful technology. but...

yes, mac filtering is one way to provide some modicum of security.
spoofing
mac's is not the first thing that enters the hacker's mind, so I've
heard,
but I would not rely on any one method to ensure a secure net. remember
that
there are several "wireless sniffers" available, so mac information can
be
decoded, and later spoofed.

some folks I have spoken with do a number of things, including WEP,
LEAP,
and IPSec or L2TP from the wireless end device into the network, end to
end.
some folks go so far as to encrypt everything on storage devices, so
that
even if the wireless authentication is broken, it does hacker no good.

if your app is hand-held based these may not be options. then you are
back
to the mac filtering. still, you might want to think about upping to 128
WEP
anyway. how concerned are you about the integrity and confidentiality of
the
data going over the wireless? more so or less so than if that same data
were
available via VPN across the internet or via dial up access?

Yes, I do have a goal in mind. I just purchased some wireless equipment
and
would like to restrict the MAC addresses allowed in. 40 bit encryption
is
not good enough for the paranoid like me.

Re: Can somebody recommend good CCIE lab test training class? [7:26444]

2001-11-15 Thread George Murphy CCNP, CCDP

Eric, I have been at GlobalKnowledge this week and although I was not in
this class, they have them and they all use nice equipment and seem to
be thorough... www.globalknowledge.com

Re: Can somebody recommend good CCIE lab test training class? [7:26445]

2001-11-15 Thread Fred Ingham

Have you passed your written test? Assuming so, there are many
references in the archives of ccielab.
There are several options available and you can choose based on cost,
schedule, and location.

I recommend the netmasterclass RS-NMC-1 course, taught by the CCIE's who
wrote the book, and who developed the BRS and ECP1/2 courses, Caslow and
Pavlichenko.
(note - I am affiliated with NMC.) http://www.netmasterclass.net for
details.

Do not enroll with anyone claiming to be teaching the ECP1 or ECP2
class; Mentor Technologies is in Chapter 7 Bankruptcy, and the principal
instructors for the old ECP courses are now teaching the one day lab
RS-NMC-1 and RS-NMC-2 courses.

HTH, Fred.

Filtering SAPs in NLSP [7:26447]

2001-11-15 Thread William Lijewski

I have searched in the archives to no avail to find the answer to this
question. The question has been asked many times, but no answer seems to
have ever been given.

Can you granuarly filter SAP in NLSP? Either they are all there, or they
are all gone?

If I have the follwing SAPs:

4 File1 44.0.0.1 451 1
4 File2 44.0.0.1 451 1
4 File3 44.0.0.1 451 1

With IPX RIP or EIGRP I can use an access list such as:

access-list 1000 deny -1 44.0.0.1 4 File1
access-list 1000 permit -1

and they apply it to the interface and File1 will disappear, but the other
two will come through. With NLSP it dosen't work. They all come through
still.

I have tried input-sap-filter, distribute-sap-filter, under the routing
process, anything I could think of but I can't make it remove just one of
them.

Any help would be great.

Thanks.
Bill
