Re: Apple Mail

2004-12-26 Thread Hal
There is a free update for Entourage in Office v.X to allow integration
with an Exchange server. My company does not use pop-based email, so I
was able to download the update and use this version of Entourage. I'm
planning to switch to Office 2004, as soon as I get used to the new
version/interface.

I have the original version of Office v. Mac. Do you all think
Entourage in that version might be worth switching to from Mail App or
is it only the 2004 edition that seems worth it?
We have an Exchange Server for our mail at work (LOTS of spam) and I'm

Re: Transfer of saved e-mails/recommended e-mail app?

2004-12-21 Thread Hal
I'm in the process of migrating from Office v.X to 2004 and I believe
that Entourage gives you the option to import data from a number of
applications, including previous versions of Entourage. That said, I
use Apple's Mail client as well and think they're both good tools. I
need to use Entourage for integration with an Exchange server at work,
and it's been great for that.

Good luck with the upgrade.

Re: Power Adapter for iBook

2004-12-20 Thread Hal
No, it doesn't. It uses the same adapter as the later white iBooks and
Powerbook G4 models. These were available as a "yo-yo" adapter (early
TiBooks) or as a small white square (later TiBooks and iBooks). The
difference is that the connector is a smaller diameter than the one on
the early iBooks and powerbook G3 models.

Hope that helps.

I agree. I personally had great experience with IMB.Hitachi's

You will definitely notice a performance boost with the faster
drive/larger cache.

Good luck.

40GB, which makes choosing the faster drive a very
easy decision. Another benefit on most faster drives
is a larger cache. The 4200 rpm 40gb drive that came
in my PowerBook has only a 2mb cache, but the 5400 rpm
drive I replaced it with (80gb) has an 8mb cache,

Re: DV editing and dvd burning realistic on a Pismo?

2004-12-07 Thread Hal
iDVD doesn't support burning to external DVD-R drives, but there is a
patch. I've used it successfully on a G4 Cube with an external firewire
burner.

That said, I think the encoding will take a quite a bit longer on a
Pismo G3 than on any G4. I'm not sure how well iMovie runs on a G3, so
you'll have to play with it.

I currently run OS 9.2, but am willing to upgrade to OS X. I am
contemplating maxing the Ram to 1 Gig and getting a 40- or 60-gig
internal hard drive.

If this is not practical, I am considering upgrading to an iBook with
internal Superdrive.

Any ideas will be appreciated. I am new to the list, so forgive me if
this is an old, worn-out topic.

I saw the same listing for a Powerbook 180 for $2000. There were no

More memoryyou need more memory. Under OS 9, 7.02 runs quite well

become much faster and more stable.

IAC, your system at 96 megs is choked for RAM anyways.

Virtual memory and ramdoubler will give you minor relief, but not a

Re: Buy new PowerBook or add a new PC?

2004-07-18 Thread Hal
I have a similar problem. Fortunately, I can get decent performance
with VPC and am using it to run Win2k. In my case, the company's web
proxy has some funky configuration that I can't get MacOSX to work
with. The solution was to go to VPC. It works great. I even use OSX's
built-in VPN client to connect to the company LAN when I'm out of the
office, and use Entourage to connect with their exchange server. Then,
when I'm in the office, I boot up Windoze and use Outlook. There are
some functions that don't work well in Entourage yet...

If you have better than a 1gHz G4 you should be fine running Win2k in
emulation. I was able to run Win98 in emulation fairly well on my
Pismo, but that was under OS9. The OSX version has more overhead. I'd
suggest trying to pick up a used G4 Powerbook or iBook and go from
there. That'll be your least expensive solution.

Just my $0.02.

using IE 5.5 can't access the Multi-list. I won't go into how absurd
that appears to me. BTW, I'm also a photographer that has a G4 at my
studio, the Pismo is at home and for traveling.
I don't really want to buy a PC and have two different laptops, but I
will if that is the best way to go. I would need one that has a
wireless
card and Windows XP Pro because our offices are set up for wireless,
but
we need XP Pro. Don't ask me any questions about that because I don't
know Windowsspeak.

I don't really want to upgrade the Pismo and would rather buy a 15" 1.5
G4 Book.
Now to the crux of the matter. Do I buy a PC and have 2 different types
of laptops, or, do I buy a new G4 PowerBook and run Virtual PC on it?
I'll have more questions about that later. I know that G5 Books will
probably not be out until next year and I don't want to wait that long.
With that said, what are the chances of a revised G4 Book coming out
later this fall?
Thanks for any help you can give. One other piece of info is that I'm

Re: ibook question

2004-07-18 Thread Hal
I had these exact same symptoms on my iBook (g3/900). I'd say with 90%
confidence that it's your battery. I got mine replaced and it solved
the problem.

Good luck.

As I believe that is NOT a solution, I made the

I'm not going to spend another cent on Apple's

Re: this is getting redundant, isnt it?

2004-07-16 Thread Hal
It's called "residual revenue".
Apple, like any company that is only going to sell you a major product
every few years, needs to insure that they can make money on a regular
basis. It's the same reason Microsoft updates Office every 2 years and
makes just enough changes that if one person in your office gets the
new version, everyone has to upgrade...

Seriously though, I've been impressed enough with the last 2 versions
to pay retail for them... 10.2 and 10.3 have been pretty major
upgrades. I hope 10.4 is as good.

Just my $0.02.

I am looking for a 12" iBook 600/700/800 with a CD/DVD drive and
would like
to know what the going price for this setup is right now. I only need
it for
traveling and have no interest in one of the new faster models.

Thanks
Tom

I think you'll have to rely on luck to find one of these. There
weren't many 12" G3 iBooks with DVD drive; mostly they were fitted
with plain CDs. This was one of the enhancements that came in with the
G4 range. DVDs were available on the 14" G3 iBooks.

Actually, that's not entirely true. While the "low-end" iBooks were
offered with CD only drives, there were 12" models with DVD or Combo
drives available at every revision as well. I currently have a 600mHz
and a 900mHz G3 iBook with Combo drives. They're readily available on
eBay and are pretty cheap. Most of the ones left at resellers will be
the CD version as they were the cheapest and slowest selling models.
Apple kept them around to have an entry level machine at a good price
point.

To be truthful, my feeling is that you'd be better off looking for a
s/hand 12" G4 iBook; the 800 Mhz ones from the beginning of this year
are beginning to show up s/hand now, and they are very, very good.
Considerably better, IMHO, than the G3 iBooks: G4, of course; DVD;
Airport Extreme; nicer keyboard; and it's believed they're free of the
motherboard problems that have beset the G3 iBooks. They do cost a bit
more, but one result of the reduction of new prices over the last
couple of years is that second-hand prices have also been compressed;
a 4 month-old 800Mhz G4 iBook won't cost that much more than a
12-month old G3 iBook.

I'd have to agree with you here. You can probably get an 800mHz G4
iBook for a few $$ more than an 800-900mHz G3 one. The benefits noted
above are real as well. The only downside is that OS 9 is only
available in Classic on the G4 models. Make sure you get a DVD version
though. Apple made G4 CD only iBooks as well.

Re: G3 900Mhz 12" iBook opinions

2004-07-07 Thread Hal
Pat,
I have a 900mHz G3 iBook and I love it. I was my "daily driver" until I
got a great deal on a 1gHz TiBook. For most tasks, it's about 80-90% as
fast as the TiBook and is much more portable. If I didn't have to use
Virtual PC so much, I'd still be using the iBook every day. That's the
only program I use daily that was just too slow on the iBook. I'm
keeping it as my "back-up" and to use around the house as a spare.

I can't speak to anyone else's experience, but I've been nothing but
thrilled with my iBooks. We still have a 600mHz and 900mhz in the house
and both work flawlessly.

As usual, your mileage may vary. :-)

If the only thing you want to do is make a copy, then you can use an

lost.

If you want to import the songs from your CD into iTunes, then prior to
importing, go in the iTunes preferences, under "Importing". There, you
can
select which encoder and what quality you want.

You could also copy the music in AIFF format to the hard drive, then
burn it back to CD. AIFF is supported in iTunes an so is Apple's new
"lossless encoding" format. AIFF is an uncompressed format and works
great for this purpose. A friend of mine is a professional DJ and uses
AIFF for his entire library.

Good luck.

Re: Taking the plunge

2004-06-08 Thread Hal
Congrats on the upgrade! You'll notice a nice performance boost.
From my perspective, you'll get a nice boost by upgrading the RAM
(pulling the 128MB module and replacing it with a 512MB). You have a
full year to get AppleCare, so unless you need the phone support (which
is initially only 90 days), you have some time. You can elect it
anytime during the first year warranty and it will add 2 years to the
total time. It also extends the phone support from 90 days to the full
3 years. In the end, I recommend it "just in case". You can often find
ithe enrollment kits discounted online as well. I got mine
(iBook-specific) for around $125 on one of the boards.

I'm a big fan of Airport, and highly recommend it. The Apple card isn't
too expensive (and you can usually catch one on eBay). I really like
the base stations as well, but if you don't need the external modem and
antenna jacks, you might be able to get by with the new Airport
Express. It' looks really slick and is a bit cheaper.

I have one each of the Airport Extreme base stations (with and without
the external antenna jack) and they work great. I use one as a repeater
to completely cover my house for wireless.

Good luck with the new hardware.

Heh, I agree with you. I have an old PB180 that I still occasionally
use.

I like the feel of the TiBook keyboard over the iBook (I have a 900mHz

but not a significant improvement from the Ti (IMHO). I also find that
I make far more typos on the iBook than I did on the Ti, so I'm

Advice on upgrading: iBook to Powerbook

2004-06-01 Thread Hal
Ok, I know this question has been beaten often been asked and has been
discussed to death, but my interest is very specific, so hopefully
someone can give me some specific insight.

I've been an member of the list for quite a while and have really
valued the thoughts of the members and tried to contribute when I
could. Unfortunately, I recently moved and there's no local Apple Store
to go play with the new hardware, so I have to rely on your help
here...

I currently use, as my daily machine for work/play, the last G3 iBook
(12", 900mHz, 640MB ram, combo drive). I really like it a lot. It's got
2.5 years of AppleCare left on it and it works great.

I'm in the process of changing jobs and am considering purchasing a new
Powerbook (got a lump sum payment and am eyeing a new computer). I'm
wondering if anyone has made the switch from a G3/800 or 900mHz or so
iBook to a 1.25, 1.33 or 1.5gHz Powerbook and could share their
experience. I briefly used a 1gHz 12" Powerbook and found the speed
increase from this iBook to be very minimal if any in most
applications. I found the benefits to be so marginal, I sold the
Powerbook and stuck with the iBook. I also had a TiBook (800mHz) for
quite a while and really liked it, but it wasn't much faster than the
iBook and the iBook is far more durable than the Ti.

I use the computer for email, web browsing, Office apps, etc. I don't
play games too much on it, as I have a 1.2gHz upgraded Cube with a 17"
flat panel at home, and it works great. I do occasionally use Virtual
PC and it's a little slow on the iBook, but certainly useable. I'm
wondering if anyone has specific experience with VPC on a newer
Powerbook as well.

I'm leaning towards the 15" Powerbook partly because the backlit
keyboard is so cool, but also partly because I prefer ATI graphics
chips. From what I've read, the 9700 is a great chip whereas the
GeForce5200 in the 12" Powerbook is adequate, but nothing to write home
about.

As I said, I'm doing the homework on this, but would really appreciate
any advice. Also, if anyone has thoughts on ordering the 128MB graphics
card or the 5400rpm hard drive options, I'd love to hear those as well.
I'm considering the 15"/1.5 gHz/128MB VRAM/Superdrive/512MB single
chip/80GB 5400rpm configuration.

Thanks in advance.

Re: ...broadband cable modems + Airport ???

2004-05-25 Thread Hal
I actually have Comcast's broadband service. I have their cable modem
(they don't charge a fee for it) connected directly to an Airport
Extreme base station. I connect my wireless and wired Macs directly to
the base. There's a network ethernet port for conencting downstream
Macs to the base and they share the same NAT pool (same subnet).

The Airport Extreme base provides NAT to wireless and wired clients, so
there's no need for another router.

Comcast provides little Mac support, but they're better than some.
Hope this helps.

Comcast so I will need a NAT equipped device to share the connection.
Does the Airport do this? Can one Mac connect via ethernet cable to

How about some Comcast approved brand name devices? Thanks very much.

Re: ...Airports...early and late...

2004-05-25 Thread Hal
Sorry for the late reply. Actually the graphite and snow versions are
the same speed.

The Airport Extreme base stations are faster. They also have an
ethernet port for downstream networking, so you can use it as your
router.

I have mine plugged directly into my cable modem, and connect all 4
macs in my house via wireless. When I occasionally need to plug in a
wired ethernet computer, I just plug it into the network port on the
base.

You can set up Airport to provide NAT/DHCP over wired as well as
wireless clients.

Hope this helps.

Sounds like a defective battery. You should bring it back to your

Good call, thanks. I called AppleCare and they're overnighting me a new

Does anyone know what can cause this in this model?
The one way I've figured out to get it to see its battery is to pull
it
out and snap it back it - a pain since it's on the bottom, plus it
doesn't work all the time any more (or for very long when it does
work).

I've tried restarting, resetting the PMU (using Apple's instructions
for this powerbook), and using the battery update software from
Apple's
site (which isn't described as solving this problem - in fact, the I
only remember seeing the "x through the battery" problem mentioned in
conjunction with WallStreets, and couldn't find any mention of it
happening to Aluminum G4s). None of these helped.

It should be under warranty still, and definitely has a CompUSA
extended warranty (I got the floor model from there), but CompUSA is
inconvenient to me - over an hour - and I wanted to know if anyone
here
had an idea what the problem might be (battery? PMU? other?) before I
check out the local Apple repair site or hit the road for CompUSA.
How long did you have it? It could be the battery running out, but
since
it's a 17", I would think something else is at cause, like the PMU.

A fair point. I have a desktop that I use for most Photoshop and video

No, when the P4 fist came out, various benchmarks showed that the P4

Significantly slower. They've ramped up the clock speeds to compensate

My recommendation would be Windows 2000, as you won't use this for
serious game play anyhow.

I have this same problem with Mail on my 900mHz iBook G3 under Panther

Re: 9.2.2 boot doesn't mount OS X volume

2004-03-06 Thread Hal
If the OSX partition is the first one on the disk (i.e. was at the top
of the list when you formatted the volume), you should be able to boot
from that partition by holding down the 'D' key when rebooting the
Powerbook. If I remember right, that attempts to boot from the first
partition on the internal drive.

Also, doesn't the system look for an OSX boot volume if you hold down
the 'X' key?

I'm pretty sure either of these should work. Anyone else confirm one or
both?

Hope that helps.

I initialize an "unreadable" volume which turns out to be the OSX
volume. I click "no" of course, but that leaves me stranded in OS
9.2.2 without a way to re-boot in OSX because, since it couldn't be
mounted, it is not an option in the Startup Disk control panel. I
tried a bunch of stuff to find a way to mount the sucker, but failed
on everything. Of course, booting from the OSX disk doesn't help,
because it doesn't allow you access to the Startup Disk control panel,
and doesn't just boot a base system; it boots the install system. I
finally have had to choose "netboot" in the Startup Disk control panel
from 9.2.2, which doesn't find a server after a few minutes, and then
boots the newest system it can find on local volumes.

Anybody know what's going on here? I'm tired of this issue.

FS: 12" PBG4 1gHz 768/40/Combo/Airport Extreme

2004-02-20 Thread Hal
I don't think I've used my "once a year personal sale" post to the
list, so here goes. I also posted this to the swap-list, but not
everyone here is on that list...

If you've already seen this listing there, please accept my apologies.

I'm selling my 12" Powerbook G4, and thought I'd hit the list before I
hit eBay. It looks brand new and has never had any problems. I still
have all the original accessories, CDs, manuals, paperwork, etc. It was
purchased new in September 2003, so it's still under the original
warranty and eligible for Applecare. I will include a copy of the
original receipt for the Powerbook (dated 9/30/03), so you can have it
for warranty purposes. The RAM and Airport Card were purchased
separately, but I can't find the receipt for them.

Here are the specs:
Powerbook G4 12" 1gHz (DVI)
768MB ram (256MB base, 512MB in expansion slot)
40GB internal hard drive
Slot-loading combo (DVD/CDRW) drive
Apple Airport Extreme card installed.
Currently Running MacOS 10.3.2 (Panther)
It has all the usual specs of this machine (2 USB 2.0 ports, 1 Firewire
port, 10/100 ethernet, mini-DVI video out, internal 56k modem, etc.)
You can check Apple's website for the details. This is the current
model. The display is clear, bright and sharp with no keyboard scuff
marks on it. I used the Pixel Check LCD screen test software and could
not find any bad/stuck/dark pixels. The display is perfect.

It is in excellent cosmetic and functional condition. I've only rarely
travelled with it, so there are no cosmetic blemishes and the battery
holds a full charge.

I will ship the Powerbook in the original double-box, complete with all
accessories, manuals, CDs and packing materials. I'll need a couple
days to back up my data, and I can ship it as-configured or with the
original factory software configuration, if the buyer wishes.

This Powerbook is currently $1599 at the Apple Store, plus $$ for the
Airport Extreme card and memory (plus sales tax).
I'm asking $1600 plus shipping or best reasonable offer. I'll also
throw in a sleeve-case (Mar-ware, I think), to keep it nice and safe.
:-)

Basically you're getting $250 worth of upgrades in exchange for a 5
month shorter warranty with no sales tax.

Please email me off-list if interested.

it's off.

Two of the machines are brand new and very clean (little or no third
party stuff). The other two had OS X recently installed and are
likewise clean.

I can vaguely recall hearing something about this but of course that's
about all I can recall about it, hearing of it. File Sharing works
fine and it starts up manually okay following a restart but that's not
good.

All four are on either on a wireless or wired connection to a router
(they are on two distinct networks). I've set this up on OS X.2 with
no problems.

Does anyone know about this?

Re: Moving to a PB

2004-02-19 Thread Hal
You could connect the computers using a firewire cable and firewire
disk mode, and use Carbon Copy Cloner to copy the entire drive. I've
done this a few times when I've upgraded machines and it's worked
great.

The one time I had a problem, I booted the new computer off a Jaguar
CD and did an Archive and Install to clean up the system folder, but it
preserved all the data I had transferred.

Not possible. They are not interchangeable.
That's curious, any information as to why this might be? Apple didn't
change the form factor at that point, so while I am not the person
asking, it would be interesting to know why.

There were changes to the logic board layout that make them
non-interchangeable. For example, the VGA port has been replaced with a
DVI video port, not in exactly the same place. The display is
different, so the internal wiring for it is probably also. The external
form-factor is the same, but many of the internal components were
changed.

Odd Panther problem on 1gHz 12" PBG4

2003-12-30 Thread Hal
I've encountered a strange problem on my 1gHz Powerbook G4 since I
installed Panther and upgraded to 10.3.2. When I close the lid and put
the computer to sleep with applications running, it invariably crashed
on wake. That is, when I open the lid to begin using it again, it
crashed, sometime immediately, always within a minute or 2. I get the
dim screen power symbol "Your computer has crashed, please reboot"
message. I think this is referred to as a kernel panic. I though it
might be my Kensington Mouseworks software, but removing it didn't
help. The other 3rd party software I have installed (that I thought
might be problematic) is Palm Desktop (for OSX) and PocketMac (syncs a
PocketPC with iSync), but the problem existed before I installed these.

The G4 has 768MB of ram and was originally running 10.2.8 with no
crashes ever. It is still completely stable and never crashes if I
don't put it to sleep. When I bought Panther (retail) and did an
upgrade install, the problem started. I've since done an archive and
install to try to fix it, but nothing's changed. Any ideas on how to
fix, or where I can look to see what's happening?

Any help is appreciated.

airport sharing under OS9?

2003-11-26 Thread Hal
Does anyone know if you can use "internet sharing" to share an airport
network connection under OS( the way that you can under OSX? What I
want to do is use the Airport card in the Powerbook to get it on the
network, then bridge that network to a wired ethernet computer by
connecting the 2.

Under OSX it's simple, I'm just wondering if it works under OS9.

Any info is appreciated.

Re: VPC 6 on a Pismo/400

2003-11-01 Thread Hal
It really depends what guest OS you try to use. I can tell you that it
won't run anything above Windows 98 well on that machine, but it will
run. I ran VPC 5 and 6 on a 500mHz Pismo, and the performance was slow
but acceptable emulating Win98. Running Windows 2000 was painfully
slow. Completely unuseable. Interestingly enough, VPC with Win98 ran
better on my 500mHz Pismo than on a 600mHz iBook. The cache makes a big
difference.

On Saturday, November 1, 2003, at 06:16 AM, Jason Long wrote:

Has anyone had success running Virtual PC 6 on a Pismo? Microsoft says
a minimum rating of 500 MHz is necessary, and that upgrades are not

programs.

I'm using Panther, which I really like, but Thoth 1.7.1 and Reunion
8.04 now have some stability problems. While infrequent enough to be
only mildly annoying has anyone else had any problem with these
programs after upgrading.

Tom, what are you talking about? iBooks have had DVD playback option
for
years...
Sorry, I should have been clearer. I was referring to the entry level
12" iBook, which until this upgrade just had a CD drive, plus of
course a G3. That was what my wife was looking at, and abouit 11
months ago a used Pismo looked like a better deal - 14" screen, DVD
player, etc, etc, for rather less money. With the latest upgrade the
entry level iBook has come on a long way - G4, Combo-drive, 30 Gb
disk, etc. I was just wondering if the differences in spec between the
entry-level 12" iBook and the entry-level 12" Powerbook are worth the
considerable difference in cost?

Powerbook: 1 Ghz CPU; extra video capability (non-mirrored monitor at
different resolution); digital video out; 40 Gb HDD; umm - anything
else?
iBook: 800 Mhz CPU; mirrored-video only; analogue output only; 30 Gb
drive (as standard, 40 Gb available as 'build-to-order').

Pretty much everything else is much the same, as far as I can see.

I would have to argue that the Powerbook 12" is still a great option to
have. I briefly had an 867mHz Powerbook G4 (12") and the difference
between that and the new 1gHz model is HUGE. It is significant;y faster
(the difference between 256k and 512k cache is quite noticeable).

The new iBook G4 is much closer in horsepower to the old 867 than the
new 1gHz 12" Powerbook.

I upgraded from an 800mHz TiBook, and the 867mHz 12" Powerbook seemed
slower overall than the TiBook. The new 1gHz version is much faster. I
couldn't run VPC very well on the TiBook, but it runs great on the new
12" Powerbook.

Just my $0.02.

just sitting in your garage doing nothing.
It doesn't work. Why? Well, unless Ford is using a smaller rim size
and a smaller wheel-well on the new mustangs, the old wheels will fit
just fine. If they don't fit this year, wait a few they probably will
again. Each car company has a tendency to use a specific layout of
posts for attaching lug nuts. I seriously doubt that Ford has changed
theirs. For that matter there are only a few variances on the
placement/number of posts within the industry. This hasn't changed in
decades. So long as the tires are in good shape (doubtful if they're
the originals), they can still be used. Now, automotive filters (of
any type), that's a different story. These are changed regularly based
on the shape and size of the engine compartment and the engine being
used.

Actually, this happened in the mid 1980's. Ford released the Mustang
SVO with wheels that were not compatible with other Mustangs, even ones
made the same year. And everyone was pissed.

Anyone use toast to burn DVDs?

2003-10-28 Thread Hal
I'm trying to burn a DVD of about 2 hours of video. When I set it up in
Toast, it tells me that I need 5.6GB of space to burn it, and the blank
DVD-R only has 4.4GB. Has anyone used the more expensive double sided
(9.2GB) DVD blanks on a Mac? I'm using a Pioneer mechanism (DVR-105,
LaCie external firewire drive). I have Toast 6, and imported the DV
files into iMovie via a firewire bridge.

Any help is appreciated.

Hal, you may be better off by doing your clone and then reinstalling
OS X from the DVD that shipped with that Al PowerBook. You can choose

Good call. If the clone doesn't work right off, I'll try that. I should

P.S. If I make the switch, I'll be selling my loaded TiBook G4/800 DVI
(Combo Drive, 1GB RAM, 40GB 5400RPM 8MB cache HD, Airport card). It has
NO scratches, chips, dents, etc. It looks like it did the day I got it.
It's also got another year and half of Applecare and all the original
boxes, a TiHandle and a WF Designs sleeve. Anyone interested in it can

Other than the 2 cracks, I'd rate it an 8 out of 10. It has some wear

There are still some system repairs it is still easier to do in OS9. I
haven't *HAD* to use them in a long time, but you never know...

It won't. The drivers you just attempted to pull off of the powerbook
would have been for OS X. They won't work under 9. Even if you could
figure out which drivers to pull back, they'd be in more than one
piece, not just a single file like they were under os 9.
I suppose you could try to clone the drive from another OS9-compatible
powerbook with the latest OS9 update. Maybe I'll try that.

Re: 1400 HD in a Pismo

of my Powerbook 1400cs and put it into the Pismo?
What's the earliest OS the Pismo can run? (My 1400 HD

this?

FS: Pismo G3/500

2003-09-25 Thread Hal
I have a Powerbook G3/500 Pismo for sale. It has 128MB RAM, 20GB Hard
Drive, Apple DVD module, 2 Apple Li-Ion batteries (both hold a good
charge), weight saver module, Apple Yo-Yo AC Adapter. It has all the
usual Pismo ports (2 firewire, 2 USB, 10/100 ethernet, modem, etc).

It currently has OS 9.2.2 installed with a few applications.

It is in good condition, with 2 exceptions. It has 2 cracks on the
outside top case. One is near the left front corner, the other is near
the right rear corner (near the hinge). Neither crack affects
operation, they are cosmetic. Both are about 1-1.5 inches in length.
The top cover can easily be replaced, Powerbookguy.com sells the top
cover part for around $60, and can install it.

Other than the 2 cracks, I'd rate it an 8 out of 10. It has some wear
on the keycaps, but everything works great.

I'm asking $550 plus shipping.

Re: Attaching second display

2003-08-27 Thread Hal
You're correct. This is the adapter that you would use to connect an
Apple ADC LCD display to your Powerbook (or any mac that has a DVI
digital video connector). The reason that you need it is that the Apple
LCD displays use a proprietary connector that carries digital video,
USB and power to the display over a single cable. The DVI port on your
powerbook carries only digital video. The adapter plugs into the back
of the display and splits the ADC into video, USB and power. The
adapter you are using right now just converts the connector on the back
of your Powerbook from digital to analog VGA. It doesn't have to carry
and split the other signals.

Hope that helps.

huge deficit that needs to be eliminated.

It wouldn't be urgent. I've been 3-4 months behind on payroll for a
long
time, I've taken a part-time job in a local camera store, and our
family
is just getting by from week to week.

However, we've just entered crisis mode. We've lived in our house for 9
years. Over that time, both my wife and I have endured significant
income
reductions. Insurance and taxes have increased our house payments while
our income has dropped, and we have not been able to keep up on a lot
of
small repairs.

No big deal. None of them endanger anyone -- until now. The city has
threatened to issue an arrest warrant and fine me because of some
broken
cement, a storm door with no screen (we never use that door, but it
doesn't appear to matter), some branches touching the roof, and several
other minor repair items that put us in violation the Housing Code.

We just don't have the money. One of our sons had surgery, and our new
insurance meant we had to pick up part of the tab. Then our water
heater
burst. Then the faucet on the kitchen sink broke and had to be
replaced.
Little things keep coming up, and we're barely treading water
financially.

I can't afford to go to jail, pay fines, or make these repairs. We are
attempting to refinance our home from a 9.0% mortgage to 6.2%, and
we're
asking for some extra cash, but it won't be enough to cover the repairs
the city wants, reshingling the roof (which is desperately needed), and
taking care of some significant plumbing and electrical issues.

We're asking the Low End Mac community to help out.

For list members, signing up for a lemlists.com email address at
$6/year
helps us and provides you a very low cost email address. For a bit
more,
we also have lowendmac.net email addresses available, along with Web
space and other services.

I have decided to sell my 400 MHz PowerBook G4. It has 512 MB RAM and
the
original 10 GB hard drive and DVD-ROM drive. The lid and screen were
just
replaced under AppleCare, the keyboard was replaced some months ago,
and
AppleCare coverage continues through January 31, 2004. $1,200 plus
shipping.

I also have two 333 MHz iMacs for sale. One has 320 MB RAM and the
original 6 GB hard drive. The other has 192 MB RAM (we tried more, but
no
luck) and a 20 GB 7200 rpm drive. These include the original iMac
keyboard and round mouse. I'm trying to find copies of the original
Rev.
D software CDs -- these were obtained used and did not include them.
I'm
hoping to sell these for $400 each with local pickup. (I'd rather not
pack and ship these heavy beasties.)

We are also accepting donations via PayPal, the Amazon Honor System,
Kagi, and e-gold.

little wobble (follow up)

2003-08-14 Thread HAL
See original post below for reference!

After further study and comparison with a 12 inch iBook and a 15 inch
PowerBook I have determined the following:

1) No surface be it desk, countertop, coffee table, dining table, etc.is
exactly level/flat across it's entire surface.
2) The 15 inch PB does not wobble at all on the same surfaces that the
12 inch PB does.
3) Moving the 12 inch PowerBook around in various positions on the
particular surface one finds spots where it wobbles and spots where it
doesn't.
3) The 12 inch iBook wobbles in the same way as the 12 inch PowerBook
on the same variety of surfaces which I sampled. Also, it doesn't
wobble in the same places that the 12 inch PB doesn't when moved around.
4) The occasional wobbling (dependent on location on the particular
surface) exhibited by the 12 inch PB & iB is due the fact that the
smaller size accentuates the unevenness of the various surfaces.
5) The 15 inch PB used for comparison does not exhibit this wobbling
due it's greater size/footprint, this causing it to be less sensitive
to unevenness of the particular surface.
6) The position of the rubber feet on the 12 PB out near the very
corners of the machine and their small size contribute to the perceived
problem. In contrast the 12 inch iB feet are larger and better
positioned which allows the iB to wobble slightly less than the 12 inch
PB but it still does wobble in a similar fashion.

In closing I would ask that my study be 'peer reviewed' to help to
confirm these findings. Move your 12 inch PB around on the table in
various positions and you will surely see spots where it does wobble
and spots where it does not.

I do not believe that there is anything wrong with our machines but
there is definitely something wrong with our table tops. :o)

This issue was disconcerting to me so I decided to check it out
further. I hope this helps anyone else who is having a similar issue or
concern.

Thanks
William

bridging/extending airport networks

Good to know. I was told otherwise (at an Apple retail store) when I
looked into upgrading the hard drive on a 600mHz iBook I used to have.
I was told that since the hard drive is not listed on this document,
it's not "user upgradeable":
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=50031

Rather than find out the hard way that I was voiding the warranty, I
upgraded by selling it. :-)

Keep in mind that the advice (that I gave in particular) was related to
Powerbook (Pismo and TiBook) models. I know for a fact that the hard
drive is NOT user-upgradeable in any iBook models. I'm only mentioning
this because I saw in yout sig that you have an iBook 700. That's a lot
tougher to upgrade and will void your warranty.

That's really strange. I know I used to use the MCE enclosure on G3
Powerbooks. I'll have another bare drive later this week and will
install it in the MCE Data Shuttle Extreme I have (Has PC Card and
Firewire connection cables) and give it a try. I'll try it in both the
Pismo and TiBook I have here and will report the findings.

I always liked these enclosures because i could use them to move data
back and forth between powerbooks very quickly, and because I've used
them as boot drives in a pinch.

I actually need to do this later this month to help my brother migrate
from his Wallstreet to the TiBook I helped him get.

Re: Booting from pccard?

2003-03-09 Thread Hal
Vicki,

The Data Shuttle I mentioned is a laptop hard drive mounted in an
external case, connected to the powerbook via a PC card interface card
(ide/pc card adapter). I got mine several years ago from MCE and have
used it with a Wallstreet, a Lombard, a Pismo and a 2400c. It's bus
powered, so you don't need an external power supply. I'm not sure if
they still make them though. I just sold my spare on the swaplist.

Hope that helps.

Are these enclosures bootable on the Mac? I've found that finding a

Marc,

Under OSX there are invisible files that you can't copy using the
Finder. The best way I've found to clone a drive so that it's bootable,
is using Carbon Copy Cloner. You can get it from:
http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html

I've used it extensively and had no problems.

good luck

Anyone need a 512mb ram chip for Ti?

2003-03-04 Thread Hal
I have an extra 512MB ram module, pulled from a 667mHz G4 available.
It's a standard SO-DIMM PC133 chip, works great in any TiBook or recent
iBook. It's a Samsung chip and was Apple OEM in one of our TiBooks.

Asking $95 plus shipping.

There's actually a couple within driving distance, so I'll give it a
shot. I'll drop by the grove later this week. I just wish they'd hurry
up and open the one in Santa Monica already...
