Hey Fritz,

The best way to update grub is using the `update-grub` CLI utility.
But you have to do it from the distro you installed grub with.  If you 
can remember which one you installed grub with, simply run that command 
using `sudo` and it should automatically detect the most recent kernel 
and do it for you.


If you cannot figure out which one you installed it with, reinstall grub 
from the distro you use the most.

5.19 and it booted up.


Question is, why doesn't it hold the data??  I've changed both line

it, one time . . . .  I tried "ctrl o" but that didn't do anything . . 
. .  Do I need to take it to "command line" and then try to "ctrl o" 
it to save it??

You could search for the available kernels to see which ones are
available, and which ones are installed.

You can also look in the /var/log/dpkg.log something like:

grep "upgrade " /var/log/dpkg.log

That might give you a starting point.

As for the disappearance of firefox, I think snap/flatpak packages
don't
always show up after install, there may be a way to force it to
update
the menus but I don't really like to use either of those unless I
*really* have to, so I don't know off the top of my head/

Thanks for the suggestions . . . I'll check into them when I get back 
to Lu in a few days.  One of my problems is that since I'm rotating 
OSs each day, I don't know where each system is vis the kernel.  
Possibly kinetic is a "5.13" base system, but I did see "5.15" in the 
upgrade list. Yesterday I was in Tumbleweed, which is 5.19 . . . and 
then today I'm in Deb Sid, which I thought would be like 5.20??? but, 
nope, uname -r shows "5.10" . . . .


The good news is that whatever blew up in the middle or end of the 
apt, the kinetic system rebooted into the GUI . . . .  It was just a 
rare instance of a "hang" in the apt dist-upgrade.

It looks like Kinetic has a 5.19 now, so you should try to update again.

You should check to see that everything was unpacked in that last 
upgrade as well.  You might need to use dpkg to fix things if not.

I've had multiple DE installed before, the only issues you might have
relate to theming and some files in ~/ when you upgrade.  My last
machine had LXQt, JWM and something else I rarely used... maybe Gnome. 
So you are going for LXDE, LXQt, and Gnome?  AFAIK that should work just
fine

Hi Marc,

Did you already test and get a working state?

If it is a problem with the menu.xml file you could try to check it with
an xml validator (like xmllint) to see if somehow the xml became
malformed.  But if it is an easy fix, you could write a script to modify
(maybe using xsltproc) whatever file it is that is messed up, and run
that on each computer after upgrade.

Hi Fritz,

I am not sure how much Canonical/Ubuntu uses AI (if at all), though
probably Ubuntu is used in some deep learning networks :)

The idea of using AI to run QA is a pretty interesting idea though.  I
wonder if any distros use AI?

I would like to point out that this is a very valid point.  I remember
when I had much more available time to mess with things (like lucid and
natty era). I found that the QA/bug reporting system seemed extremely
complicated.

apport should be specifically tuned to use the QA system, as well as
launchpad.

Hi,

I agree that pkexec is the current best practice.  You will need to make
a pkexec file for the programs if they do not have one, though.

I am not sure though if systemd is replacing PolicyKit (they've replaced
many many many things).  So this may be a temporary solution (should
work for a few years at least).

Hi Aere,

I am not 100% sure what needs to be installed, but I found an answer. 
The main thing you need to do is change the Qt theme to use the Qt GTK+
engine.  I am sure there is a way to change the theme from the terminal
(like with GTK), but I don't use Qt as much as FLTK/GTK toolkits.

Those are Qt apps, are you using LXDE or LXQt?

If you are using LXDE then, installing lxqt-sudo probably installed some
more things, and changed a Qt setting.

You can make sure you have the Qt GTK+ engine

sudo apt install qt5-gtk-platformtheme

This hopefully will fix it.  If not, look for a Qt settings (or KDE
settings) in your /usr/share/applications/

Then launch this and change it to the qt gtk+ engine

Hi Aere, I did some searching, and it is extremely hard to find out
where/what the synaptics API actually is anyhow after long searching
I found

Which is somewhat an example of the C interface... I know you mostly do
Java, but if you are motivated C++/QML is actually a nice way to program
and I am sure all LXQt denizens would welcome a fully functioning true
synaptics config tool... otherwise it would be pretty easy to write a
program that gets values and simply send them via the system() command.

I am also sending this to the list in case anyone around is really
interested in making something, and to have it in the mail archives if
anyone ever is looking for it again :D

The caveat is that this is Xorg specific... no idea how Wayland
will/does handle this... though my experience with Wayland so far has
been a bit underwhelming.  Though... it may replace X eventually kinda
like systemd did with the old init system.

You can change touchpad settings manually from the terminal.

I personally have a FLTK based application that I use to fine-tune
synaptic touchpad settings.


open a terminal and type


synclient


This will list all your current settings if your touchpad is supported
by the synaptic drivers.


Then simply run synclient again when you find the setting you want with
the name and value


probably you want something like:


synclient TapButton1=1


But, you can try each setting that you want to explore and it will
instantly change your settings.  You probably need to save these to a
script to automatically be run each time you start your session.

FWIW

I have LXQt in 18.04 with a bunch of GTK apps, as well as a few other
DE/WM setups, and GTK apps (such as thunderbird) work just fine.  Qt
apps are, of course preferred.  I also have a KDE Neon machine which
uses Thunderbird and it works perfectly there.  And on the other side
VLC is a Qt app and is used in a lot of GTK DE and works well.  So you
can easily install and run ANY familiar app in the repos, though you
will also install the libraries to run the graphical toolkit.

I make/use a lot of FLTK based apps in the same environment with Qt and
GTK apps and all work well together.

Have you tried using the torrent option
?
 
Or perhaps using zsync 
would work.  With zsync you could download 10MB and then restart the
download once it fails.

Something like:

#!/bin/bash
iter=1
while ! zsync
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/lubuntu/releases/cosmic/release/lubuntu-18.10-desktop-i386.iso.zsync
do
iter=$(( iter + 1 ))
echo "Try #$iter"
[[ -f lubuntu-18.10-desktop-i386.iso ]] && ls -lah
lubuntu-18.10-desktop-i386.iso
done


This will automatically try to zsync repeatedly, until it fully finishes.

You will have to CTRL+C to stop it if you need to (or close the terminal
window)

However this will not work in windows, unless, perhaps you use WSL
though I have never used WSL and cannot actually confirm it.

Hey Fritz, yes it is the solution.  You can also use the GUI "Software &
Updates".  I am not sure if the Qt version is the same as the GTK
version, but in the GTK version go to the "Updates" tab and at the very
bottom you can modify:

"Notify me of a new Ubuntu version:" to say "For any new version"

Hi Nio,

It looks like the only old ones I have are the old Gnome2 Ubuntus Feisty
Fawn, Hardy Heron and Lucid..

If you want any of those let me know... I must have gotten rid of the
11.04 ISOs recently because I did purge some of my CD collection... I
just can't get rid of that Hardy Heron cd though... that background was
fantastic :D  And Lucid was a turning point where the whole *buntu
experience started to become really easy to use for the average user.  I
also have a bunch of Lubuntu Precise (12.04) isos  PPC, 32bit 64bit and
12.040.1 64 bit Lubuntu

So if you want any of those let me know.

Hi Fritz,

You ran 'sudo' before the zsync command.

You now need to run sudo chown $USER:$USER //

Where // is the actual filename (and path if you are not in
the directory which has the file).

It is locked because root owns it (since you ran sudo).

It should be fine, but don't run zsync as super user in the future :D

I only have LXQt running on my machine so I do not remember the name of
the program.  The LXQt version is much different than the Lubuntu GTK
one is.

The GTK one is a bit more scattered looking, and a bit more confusing
(well at least the last time I used it).  So, you will have to look for
the startup applications, or an option to set the desktop handler. 
PCManFM can be run without handling the desktop, and unlike some of the
other FM (like Nautilus aka Files) PCManFM does not impose this feature
by default.  So, somewhere in your startup applications settings PCManFM
is being set to run with its --desktop option.

I am sorry that I cannot be more detailed, but I have not used the GTK
version of Lubuntu in a couple years, I am really interested in where
LXQt can go, mostly because:



GTK has become increasingly worse with each new release.  The devs
consistently drop really useful things and deprecate needed features. 
But it isn't that I don't like Lubuntu in GTK form, just the GTK+ APIs.

few years, rather than making itself more monolithic and have less
features like GTK has been doing.

Hi Felipe,

Not sure if we can help you, since this is for Lubuntu specifically. 
How do you start i3?  Do you use lxsession?  Do you configure it using
something in your home folder (.xsession, .xinitrc, .bashrc, etc...)

/etc/X11/Xsession i3

instead, so you do not run the Lubuntu specific startup things.

Using .xinitrc is a well accepted method, but will interfere with other
DE/WM.  For example you cannot reasonably run Lubuntu, LXQt, i3, and JWM
all by using a file in your home folder and get the best results.  It
would be better to write a shell script to set the variable you want,
and start things that you can call up.

I have never used i3.  I use JWM regularly, so I cannot give you i3
specific advice.  JWM is my favorite window manager, by far :D

Yes Fritz, you are correct,

If you are on an LTS it will likely ignore it, unless your settings are
set to upgrade to any new release.  It will wait to upgrade you to 18.04

And for completeness I will offer the full-upgrade command:

sudo apt full-upgrade

Hi,

No problem,

The problem is most likely your openbox config for Lubuntu, which I do
not remember the name of it (I don't use the GTK version of Lubuntu,
only the Qt)

So there might be a lubuntu folder in .config with an xml file for
openbox (with the .rc ending) OR it could be a file in the openbox
directory there.

click to choose other sessions.  I am not using the default icon theme
so I cannot tell you exactly what it looks like, but IIRC it may be a
gear icon, though I do not remember.

Clicking on this should produce a drop down list which allows you to
select another session, make sure you choose Lubuntu (possibly Lubuntu
Desktop if that is an option... sorry I don't tend to remember the login
screen well enough).

Once you have chosen it, click the drop down again, to verify it is the
highlighted option, before trying to log in.

If this succeeded, then HURRAY!

Hi,
I got the files from the list, so they are present
I looked through things and am not entirely sure what is causing it. 
There is a lot there, so there may be something obvious I missed.
The only clue I see right off is that dbus is having some issues with
something (light locker for one), but I do not see why that would
corrupt your session.

So, my basic thought is that your config is wrong, OR you are choosing
some sort of session which is missing things.  Are you logging into the
'Openbox' only session?  Or are you logging into the Lubuntu Desktop
(not the LXQt desktop either)?
If you accidentally switched to the openbox session it could describe
why you have these issues pretty well, since it is likely unconfigured
for a standalone usage.

Hi,

systemd is the reason, most likely.  You will have to use another distro
such as Devuan OR learn the new systemd way.  I am not an advocate for
systemd so I would not be a resource for it.

Hi Harry,

It would benefit us to learn the contents of your xerrors, as I suspect
this would give an indication as to what went wrong.

You can also drop to a TTY (not sure how to do this in VBox since I use
virt-manager) and then log in there.  Once logged in you can copy your:

~/.xsession-errors

and

~/.xsession-errors.old

you can also check dmesg and look at systemd logs via journalctl

You can use journalctl for kernel logs also alternatively by using the
--dmesg option

I think by looking at the xsession errors it might give a clue what
happened.


Did you install any software on top of the vanilla Lubuntu install?

Thanks for that Input.  I know I have had issues with VirtualBox in the
past as well, so I switched to using Virtual Machine Manager / KVM. 
This is now my preferred method of virtualization, though it requires
Linux (AFAIK).

Harry you might try another virtualization software, to see if you can
get around this issue, if there are any available for your OS.

There have been many issues related to Metldown/Spectre recently (search
for this if you are not familiar with these issues)

One of those issue crept into the kernel.  On some machines this issue
causes some computers problems booting, though I had thought it to be
fully fixed.

Red Hat recently went as far as rolling back their updates, and
preventing the fixes from entering their kernels based on similar issue
to what you report.

So, since Intel/AMD have had serious security issues in their kernel
firmware, these updates are needed, but the fixes also are causing
problems in some cases.

The issue, may simply be Virtual Box, but be aware it might be related
to that specific kernel issue.  Try booting from an older kernel to see
if your problem is fixed.  You may also simply need to update VBox

Make sure your ISO image is correct using md5sum.
Personally I like using zsync to download an ISO because it
automatically checks the md5sum and makes sure things are correct.

This command will list all kernel modules with wmi in their name:
find /lib/modules/$(uname -r) -type f -name '*.ko*' |grep wmi
For me I fine and acer_wmi, which is probably the one your computer is
trying to load
You might need to blacklist it, and load a different module instead, or
if it isn't being loaded properly (being blacklisted) you might need to
force it to be loaded.

I am not sure of that I have a Lenovo, and do not see any lenovo
specific kernel modules, however when I search my modules I find:
/lib/modules/$(uname -r)/kernel/drivers/hid/hid-lenovo.ko

Some people have gotten it to work well.

You might try a live CD from an earlier release (14.04) to see if it
performs well, and if you have time to try things out, you could install
it to see if it is working.

If things work, you could check the modules that are loaded for the
working kernel, with this command:
lsmod

And then use those modules in 16.04

I used to have one of those 07 MBP laptops, though I was at least the
3rd (or fourth) owner, and received it because it had some issues...
It would not boot nicely with any image, except for the Mac specific
ones, and the NVidia graphics card was most annoying (no working
nouveau, you need proprietary drivers, which are usually not as good as
nouveau is).

14.04* is the*last version* with a Mac specific build.

The older Macs have a strange hybrid system that is a bit troublesome. 
14.04 was the last version I was able to boot on that model.
So I simply installed it and upgraded to 16.04.  There is probably
another way you can hack the ISO image, or perhaps using rEFInd will
allow you more control of the boot process, though IIRC there were still
issues I faced trying to boot a more modern 64bit ISO.
Later Macs do NOT have this issue, regular amd64 images have the right
EFI setup on the ISO to boot them nicely.

It is a bit troublesome to setup the first time, but works well once you
get it all setup.

You should use your own server for that.

The things you describe sound like websites, rather than Debian apt
packages (compiled programs/scripts/etc...).
Lubuntu is a set of programs to give you freedom on your computer to use
it directly, without giving up your freedom to a proprietary OS.

There are a variety of web browsers you can use to connect to websites,
though I would *strongly advise* against your mentioned usage.  If you
wanted privacy because you were in an oppressive country trying to have
more freedom of information I would give you names of programs you could
use to help, as well as specific distributions which would make your
internet activity less easy to track.

Ahh good to know this, I was just (incorrectly apparently) assuming this
is how the servers worked, based on the prescribed way you build them
locally to test them prior to uploading them to Launchpad (at least for
a PPA).  This is much more robust than I realized, thanks so much for

Thanks for making this more clear here, I meant to reference the gpg key
of the repository being imported into apt (in this case the Ubuntu keys)
so that apt will know the source is trusted when communicating with it,
at least this is how I understand the process.

Hi,

Lubuntu uses Launchpad to host the code for building the packages
(desktop meta package, artwork, etc..) on Ubuntu's servers.  The Ubuntu
build servers use the normal Debian way for checking and validating
things.  They use lintian for the Debian package lint checks, and
pbuilber to compile it and make the packages which does some pretty
strict checking of the the packaging.  This is all validated via APT. 
Lubuntu packages are directly included in the Ubuntu repositories (not a
PPA)

LXDE/Qt hosts their code on Github.  I am not sure what they use for
their builds.  But this is the compiled code (the panel, filemanager,
etc...), Lubuntu doesn't really write many compiled programs/packages,
though IIRC there may be a GTK app written in Vala for something, but I
may be mistaken.

pm-is-supported --suspend; echo $?

If you have a 0 it is working, anything else means you may need
proprietary drivers, or it may not work.

Suspend requires support form your video card.

It is a known issue I think, at least it has been around as long as I
know of.

The script is actually part of ToriOS, and I would gladly give them to
the devs!

I have developed a lot of things to address those kinds of issues I face
in various DE/Distros.  Feel free to search launchpad for a bug, OR open
one.

It checks for a lot of things.  basically download the raw file, then:

chmod +x amixer-toggle

sudo cp amixer-toggle /usr/bin

Change the keybinding for XF86AudioMute defined in
~/.config/openbox/lubuntu-rc.xml

to

amixer-toggle

This script also will work if you have pulseaudio installed using the
pulseaudio command line tools

Hi,
As a former BBS'er we should all realize the internet is intrinsically
without privacy.  When you connect to the 'Internet' you are hooking
your computer to someone else's computer through an internet service
provider that handles the transfer of every single packet your computer
throws into the web (which is a bunch of other people's computers that
are interconnected like a web).  Sure, ixquick and ddg are better for
privacy, but only privacy towards Google.  Your ISP can have everything
you do if they want.
There are plenty of privacy focused distros, like Qubes, or Tails,
etc...  Even using Puppy (or Lubuntu) on a USB on a public computer is
pretty secure.

Now, I personally do not like Google for many reasons, and always change
it to either ixquick(startpage) or ddg, I like duckduckgo because of the
terminal like search interface using the !, and I like that it does not
'Bubble' me like Google which tries to figure me out and will give me
completely wrong answers rather than simply searching for what I ask
because Googoo thinks it knows me better than I know what I am looking for.

Should Lubuntu change the Ubuntu default setup?  It would be very hard,
every time Ubuntu updates Firefox, Lubuntu would have to update their
lubuntu-startpage-that-is-not-google package in the repositories, which
is unreasonable to ask.
Qupzilla uses duckduckgo by default IIRC and *SHOULD* IMHO be the best
choice for LXQt Lubuntu.

In my country people use the word 'google' to mean search the internet,
so the average user would not know how to google something if google
doesn't exist.  Most people do not know how to change the default search
program in their browser.

I think the most reasonable option is to build up the popularity of
alternative search engines until people don't like Google just like
excite, hotbot or any of the other search engines we used before google
changed searching altogether.

Hi Basil,
This would be an OK idea, and easy to implement, but the issue you run 
into is having a near continual 'sleep' going, which eats memory.
You could write a program to do this but I think a touchpad toggle 
script is easier, and makes more sense, as well as saves your resources:

Just simply make this an executable file and edit your openbox config

Hi Barry,
It is useful if you need to scan things, and do work on them when the 
kids are asleep and the printer/scanner is in the living room.

I have used it on a few occasions.
It is also nice not to have to plug a cord in, you just turn on the 
printer, then scan.
There are 'few' times it is needed, mostly it is nice to not need to 
plug in a cord just to scan.

I believe that is not the best way to do it? I'm not sure, but I think 
it used to be that I click "Find Network Printer" and type the ip 
address of the computer to which the Epson printer is connected 
(Desktop 1 / windows 7 machine), then it would be able to detect the 
printer and I would continue from there.


I wonder if that has anything to do with the network scanning problem.

In other words, network printing is possible only because of a 
workaround; the root of the problem seems unsolved, and so the network 
scanning problem is to be expected.  Am I wrong?

I have an HP DeskJet 3510 and scanning from WiFi works flawlessly and 
requires no setup.  I use the gnome printer tool to set it up, and 
'Simple Scan'


Not sure what to tell you other than it is definitely possible, and is 
extraordinarily easy when you use HP.  I also did it previously with an 
HP printer connected via an ethernet cable to my router.


You might try looking in the cups configuration to see if your printer 
supports it.

Yes, Simon, the dark-ish theme is deprecated now for several reasons.
We tried shipping a dark panel theme with light windows and (inverted)
white icons. But there were some problems with it:

- the theme needed too many updates, and we don't have the resources

letting you to customise at any level.

Anyway, if you want to get back the semi-dark theme, you can grab the
GTK [1] and icon [2] themes (I released them to allow any user to
continue or fork them), or even download new ones from Gnome-Look [3].
Sorry if this isn't what you expected to hear, but we're doing a big
effort to keep the Lubuntu overall looking nice, specially now we're
porting everything to Qt, using a new syntax, new apps new
controls and
almost re-doing it from scratch.

journalctl -f
This will follow the most recent issues.. and most likely give you more
info about network-manager since it seems to fail.
journalctl -k

And see if there are any errors.
Often there are a bunch of garbage errors in stripped down systems, or

Other possible areas to check:

Another major thing would be to check
/etc/network/interfaces

iface lo inet loopback

you only want the loopback interface handled this way... nothing like
wlpNsN
enpNsN
where N is a number.
This is the new systemd naming scheme for the old
ethN
wlanN
devices.

running:
ifconfig
should show you some possibly useful info as well.

There are quite a few possibilities for what *could* be wrong with this.

Also, making sure network-manager-gnome is installed with all the
recommends might help

These are the first initial things that come to mind, that I have dealt
with in other pursuits :)
I would troubleshoot this myself, but as you know there are other things
I currently need to attend to.

In my experience VirtualBox is not a very good judge of whether

My experience with upgrading BIOS from GNU/Linux is NO.
FreeDOS can sometimes run the executable and work well.
Usually what I do before installing GNU/Linux is to upgrade the BIOS.
So if you have a Windows CD install windows, upgrade BIOS, and then 
install GNU/Linux.


Someone else may have some experience doing it, but the last BIOS update 
I did was quite some time ago.

I have a Aspire One that doesn't boot from SD, it is an older BIOS, 
and i hope the latest BIOS saves the day. But having a tool to

i'm able to boot from it (BTW ToriOS is nice!)
So i really hope the latest BIOS supports booting from SD, that would

One other thing to add...
You can boot from an ISO file via Grub
It has been a while since I have done this, so some things may have 
changed... and NOT ALL DISTROS use casper as the root directory for the 
initrid/vmlinuz files, so look in the ISO for the file you need... for 
example Fedora is quite different

Some also need very specific boot parameters (like Arch)
So consult the ISO if you are using something besides *buntu, this is 
specifically targeted at *buntu use.

## this will be different on your computer, use the TAB completion
## some are something like (msdos1,1)
*set root=(*hd1,1*) *
## use tab completion here as well if you need
*set isofile=*"/path/to/FILENAME.iso"
## same as the root you set
*loopback loop*(hd1,1)*$isofile*
## the main thing is to include the path to the vmlinuz, and set the 
boot= that directory name... you might also need vmlinuz.efi if you are 
doing an efi boot

*linux (loop)/*casper/vmlinuz *boot=*casper
## some distros use different compression... so just check
*initrd (loop)/*casper/*initrd*.lz
*boot
*You**can also add a custom grub entry menu.

This could be done from a USB stick, technically, where you keep a bunch 
of ISO files, and make custom GRUB entries and boot each on separately


Again, I have not done this in a few years, (I have been using mkusb to 
overwwrite the same USB stick, like Nio) so things may have changed some.

in USB 2 ports too, because the flash memory hardware is often

I use mkusb (to wrap a safety belt around dd alias 'disk destroyer'), 
most of the time making simple live-only pendrives that are cloned 
from the iso files. Most iso files today are 'hybrid' iso files, which 
means that they work when cloned, so it is a very simple process.


It is a lot of work to keep a multiboot pendrive up to date, it can 
easily lag behind. It is somewhat complicated to keep the boot script 
(grub.cfg or a corresponding file for other bootloaders) up to date 
and working if you have several different distros.

Specially now that 8GB is about the smallest stick size thats still
available in stores.

This would it make it less of a hassle to try a few distros.

I now have 4 Sticks in use for Lubuntu 16.04 64, 32, and alternate 64
and 32bit
that puts about 28GB doing nothing.

I have tried 2 multiboot options i could find but for some reason only
one of those partially works.

OBI looks like a good solution, but most distro's sit in a ISO.


Please try and find out which way you want to manage your iso files 
and boot drives :-)

You can disable the screen blanking with
xset s off -dpms

Feel free to add that to the autostart of any installed system you want 
to disable this default 'feature'.  This was important back in the CRT 
monitor days, but is less needed in the current LCD monitor days.

Laptops do not have CRT monitors, of course

You can also install xscreensaver and run
xscreensaver -no-splash
you can run
xscreensaver-demo
to disable the screen saver altogether through the GUI (which is the 
easiest way to configure it)

Lubuntu's user group is the best, and Lubuntu is one of the best distros 
for low-end machines.  There are a few others that are really great, but 
Lubuntu has the best community and this makes Lubuntu stand above the rest.

UbuntuOne is also needed to upload code to Launchpad and create a PPA.

It is required to edit a Wiki

I think in most cases UbuntuOne is a good measure of security for users, 
and it also provides more anonymity in certain cases, such as being able 
to upload information to a private bug.

Hi,
In my experience if you want to know what your computer is doing, and 
every single thing is hand picked to provide the best 
security/privacy/etc...
Use Arch.  It is pretty easy to install (if you like terminals) and is 
really configurable  The FSF advocates Trisequel GNU/Linux so that 
might be another option for a preconfigured privacy respecting distro.  
There is no proprietary firmware so things may not work ccorrectly on 
some hardware.


If you do not want to use a terminal, there is not much you can do to 
ensure much of anything, though..
IF you want to go ALL out, you can use LFS... but that is a bit overkill 
unless uyou really are just looking to learn more about GNU/Linux

recalibrate the edge to encompass the small circular portion, perhaps 
the synclient output will give me an idea what you are experiencing

This is just one I use in a window manager (not Lubuntu), so you will 
need to modify it as your touchpad needs are most likely different.


This should most likely solve your scrolling issue.  But maybe we need 
to look more into what you need.


It is quite possible that this secondary device is actually the same 
thing (both pads connected to the same chip, and relayed to the mother 
board as one device)  You most likely just need to adjust the ranges so 
the secondary pad is within the specfied range.


I do have a FLTK program for configuring settings for this, but I will 
have to extract it from another program that it is part of IF you are 
REALLY interested in it.  It is from a program to configure JWM (a 
window manager) but controls virtually every synclient property, as I 
really like configurability.

In regards to your previous e-mail, gedit is actually supposed to look 
that bad.  install pluma to get the 'correct' gedit again. The new gedit 
uses the new gnome layouts (which are harder to use, and harder to find 
things in though it might work better in gnome I suppose), pluma is a 
fork of gedit which does not do these things.

Hi, just a few quick notes.

flashplugin-instcaller is actually called flashplugin-installer (minor typo)
Also, many things use HTML5 video now.  YouTube defaults to HTML5 video, 
for example.


It might be good to see if you *need* to use flash before installing it.

I just tried with Numix, and the bug is there.  Could this be an issue 
in Abiword?  I do not notice a cursor flicker in other GTK programs.


A quick look at their bugzilla page shows similar issues going back a 
number of years.  So this might be a relic of a bug, that doesn't show 
up in certain themes.

This is a great workaround, however implementing this as a fix is messy.
It would have to be put somewhere into a lubuntu postinstall script

This is not something I think the developers will implement.  It is good 
to have a great answer for all the users here using Abiword though, 
thank you!


The actual fix will have to be in the Lubuntu GTK theme, which Rafael 
has already commented on.  GTK themes are pretty complex and rewriting 
the entire theme to fix this will take a large portion of time.  I hope 
the upstream theme (Ubuntu's GTK theme) will fix this, and perhaps the 
bug should be raised with them as well?


I will test this with Numix and Ambiance gtk themes and report back here

There are some tweaks you can do to make it boot quicker.  AFAIK this is 
mostly due to journctl logging excessively.  This coupled with network 
manager eventually makes the system crawl.


I could be wrong about this, but I think it might be the cause.

You can limit the logging capability to less space (I limit mine to 
50MB) that way it doesn't built up cruft.


Also it seems a larger harddrive will take longer to boot that a smaller 
one, in my experience.  I tested booting a 100 Gig hardrive and it went 
reasonably fast.  Once I moved to 500 Gig the boot time is significantly 
slower.


Not sure why the password prompt never shows on some occasions, 
though...  I have not had that issue.  You should check your error logs 
to get more detail.

You can check the journctl log by running journctl from a terminal
If you get stuck at a black screen drop to a TTY (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and log 
in there and run journctl

If you have updated any since it was released you will not have much of 
an update.

Xenial has just released the first point release.
So combine all the updates of everything from the time you installed it.
That would be the proper full amount of updates.

I think C is better for a file manager, but that is just my opinion..

I think experimenting with different apps is great, you find a lot of 
things you wouldn't.  I for one do not like leafpad at all for a text 
editor and always install something else (pluma, geany, mousepad 
something with syntax highlighting)  For many leafpad would work well as 
it is a simple text editor.  But I NEED syntax highlighting in a text 
editor so I install other apps.  Same for you and the file manager, you 
are accustomed to certain ordering of files so you require a file 
manager that does that to keep your workflow the same.


Maybe you could e-mail us your results of testing, or even contribute a 
wiki page to the Ubuntu wiki about file managers?

They would seem to be sorted numerically (at least somewhat)
In ASCII the . comes before the letters, though Capitals come before 
lowercase, so it is not 100% accurate.  This is just my guess as to 'why'
For me, if I have enabled hidden folders/files to be seen I want to find 
them first.

CTRL+H will hide them/unhide them
You can also (in the newer versions) change the colours of the hidden files.
I actually really like pcmanfm much better than all the other file 
managers I have used.  It handles everything (now) that I want it to, 
and has features others don't (F4 to open a terminal in the current 
directory)


But, as it has been pointed out you can use another file manager, there 
are plenty to choose from

On Lubuntu, no I didn't try Brasero or and other burning method.   I 
did open Synaptic and selected Brasero for installation, but when I 
saw all of the deps that it required I thought I would mention the 
problem to this list to see if there was a known fix for Xfburn, 
instead of installing Brasero.


There very well may be, but like you I ran into issues using it many 
years ago, and have since used the tool that I know works


And finally, can you open xfburn from a terminal and report the 
errors it spits out in the terminal, those are generally very useful 
for finding issues.


When I open xfburn from a terminal all I get is a pop up window saying 
"No burners are currently available" and this in the terminal: "** 
Message: Using UDEV".



This is a clue here.
You may indeed need to make some sort of UDEV rule, and also check your 
users permissions to use the device, OR possibly xfburn needs to be able 
to use devices and is not part of the correct group.


You might try contacting the xfburn people (XFCE people) directly for 
insight here

I have not had any issues with either of the external DVD/RW dirves I 
have used over the years, but again I do not use xfburn, because I

The filename is:

I then rebooted and still Xfburn does not see the external burner.

It is possible to boot a USB from some computers via GRUB.
Some older computers do not even initialize the USB ports until much 
later (after the initial BIOS)

So the only option is a CD image.

In those situations users will be require to use the mini iso.
This is problematic, as a Live ISO is a good way to test hardware

Hey Jack,
if you are booting to a black screen then it is your graphics card (most 
likely).
This is a problem that will require you to research some things but 
should likely be able to overcome.
That said, it might be better to wait for a while before trying this 
distro...
Often in the weeks before the Alpha is released there are some rather 
grievous issues on certain hardware (especially those requiring external 
graphics modules)

ACPI is the  Advanced Configuration and Power Interface so it does have 
something to do with acpi, indeed!


If it didn't work you could try using some acpi options
Here is the EXHAUSTIVE kernel parameters list

tl;dr
acpi=off might work as a temporary test... but I don't recommend adding 
it as a kernel parameter permanently

go through and test the other 'Format' options

acpi={force | off | strict | noirq | rsdt | copy_dsdt}

This is the snippet from the page:

acpi=   [HW,ACPI,X86,ARM64]
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface
Format: { force | off | strict | noirq | rsdt |
  copy_dsdt }
force -- enable ACPI if default was off
off -- disable ACPI if default was on
noirq -- do not use ACPI for IRQ routing
strict -- Be less tolerant of platforms that are not
strictly ACPI specification compliant.
rsdt -- prefer RSDT over (default) XSDT
copy_dsdt -- copy DSDT to memory
For ARM64, ONLY "acpi=off" or "acpi=force" are available

How are you running it?
I assume you are using chroot to access this, is this correct?
Or are you referring to something else?

Hi you might initially try adding nomodeset to the boot parameters
It seems your particular computer does have certain issues with this 
shutdown/suspend thing

basically:

pressing any key other than the ENTER key.

key as the computer attempts to boot to display the GRUB 2 menu.


 * In certain circumstances, if holding the SHIFT key method does not
   display the menu pressing the ESC key repeatedly may display the menu.

Then change:
quiet splash
TO
nomodeset

If it worked here is how to finalize the change
edit /etc/default/grub
i.e
sudo pico /etc/default/grub
change:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
to:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash nomodeset"

There are a few other kernel options to try... but this one works pretty 
well often.


If it works then we can look into tweaking it and testing other things, 
if you have odd graphics or some other issue when using nomodeset

sometimes a kernel parameter can help with this issue... but again with 
PPC you never know maybe someone else here knows for sure??
I have had a PPC that did suspend and wake, but not every release has 
worked for this... i am not sure if my Precise iBook (running precise 
that is, as the sound issue was not resolved in Xenial... and I don't 
have time to mess around with it much.)

Not holding my breath, perhaps I shouldn't even be thinking about this 
for the "PPC" aspect . . . it just would be the determining factor to 
being able to use linux more regularly, as my computer use is 
periodical throughout the day, etc and sleep/suspend is "necessary"  
to do that.


@Israel: appreciate the, "This might suspend yr computer, but no 
guarantee it will wake" . . . indeed that is more or less what is 
happening--need the power button to get out of it, etc.
