Re: [newbie] 56k modem

2003-03-22 Thread et
I see your modem and your video and share an IRQ, (11) have you considered
that might be the problem? are you installing these modems in the same PCI
slot?

I have a usr 5610 model modem, and it requires an added init string of
ATS32=66, you might try looking at the USrobitics website and see if there
are any strings required for your particular 5610 modem (mine is a 5610b
external)
Also, this type of problem may mot be the modem, but related to your ISP.
Is this a dual boot computer? is it set with plug and pray aware OS set to
off or no in the BIOS? if it is dual boot, have you tried the winders side to
see if the problem is the same? using the same wire from the jack as the
older box with an ISA modem? have you considered to take the ISA modem out
and try it in the new box? does the new box have an ISA slot?
I seem to remember a problem like this for some USR modems, and it required a
reset of the modem after about an hour or so. I think USR had some drivers
update for windows that cured it once the new drivers were run once, seems
they either changed some internal setting on the modems firmware, or provided
the correct init string and then that was copied into the linux KPPP setup.
Might even be a bum modem, or need to be reset into the PCI slots

Someone suggested that I change the init string from

I did, and the symtom remains...I was online for an
hour and 30 minutes, when suddenly I could no longer

It is not clear to me how I'm supposed to access

Any assistance appreciated of course ...

 That's because FAT32 doesn't implement permissions the same way - so a

 the device was originally mounted.

FAT32 in and of itself doesn't have permissions - at least they aren't
built into the filesystem in the same way that Linux and other Unix
systems do (at the inode level). Nevertheless, it is possible - even
with Windows 95 to set up private and public spaces (aka drives). I've
seen it done when I used to work at the local Census office here. We
had a network of some 20-odd PCs all running Windows 95 - and a big
server running NT. Of course, all this smoke and mirrors we had set
up probably was courtesy of NT and Novell and not 95 specifically. But
we were able to login at any workstation and attach our private
drive or store files in a public area. I wasn't involved in IT there
so I don't really know how it was done -- but Im sure it would have
been easier to do it in Unix :).

NT doesn't use FAT32 - it uses NTFS - which does support security at node

yes, but this person does not have windows at all, they have a fat partition

 Hi all...

For the last 7 years or so I thought that Windows had no
 security at all. Until today.

But first things first : I don't have Windows on my box. In
no way, manner, shape or form. Only Mandrake 9.0.

Well, a modification is needed here :

My box is set up with 4 users : My ever-beloved wife, my two
daughters and the man himself. (Our two cats use it as
well, but only because it's a nice, warm place to take a
 nap).

We respect each others privacy. Accordingly the
security-level is set to *high*. We can't peep into each
others stuff. Fine. But we have a lot in common. We have
various family-related stuff, letters, and the family
 photo-album.

Now, the last time the *sysadmin* (me) installed Mandrake he
wanted to show off : creating a *common* partition on the
80 GB drive. In fact, besides the usual / , swap and /home
 partitions - all ReiserFS - he created a fourth : a FAT32
partition (/dev/hda4). The reason for FAT32 (VFAT) was
simple : a Windows-FS. No permission issues, no security at
all, free access to everyone, everything in public,
 belly-up.

Surprise, surprise. Initially everything was perfect, but
after a few weeks the FAT32 partition seems to close its
*Gates*. - Normally it would have *dwrxrwxrwx* permissions,
meaning that it was showing off nude in public. But maybe
it's getting shy : now the permission are *dwrxr-xr-x*,
meaning that only root (me again) can write to it.

That - of course - triggered my filthy phantasy. I tried to
become root and change the permissions by issuing the
 command : chmod 777 * .

Guess what ? : No effect at all !

 Then : chmod u+w * .. : Operation not permitted

And so on and so forth.

Conclusion : Bill Gates finally found a way to defeat even a
 linux - ROOT.

 At least on my box.

IBM Linux Infrastructure to Provide America's Three Million Truckers
Nationwide Truck Stop Wireless Internet Access
17 Mar 2003, 3:53pm ET
 E-mail or Print this story
- - - - -
1,000 Truck Stops to Be Transformed to Offer Transportation Industry
e-Business on Demand

IBM and Rocksteady Networks today announced that the companies will
provide the infrastructure for Columbia Advanced Wireless (CAW) to offer
high speed wireless Internet access at more than 1,000 truck stops
throughout the country. The new solution will enable trucking enterprises
to gain access to critical information by extending an e-business through
this new wireless e- solution.
Rocksteady software loaded on IBM's Intel-based servers running Linux
will enable the nation's truckers to connect to the Internet through
802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN'S) deployed by Columbia
Advanced Wireless. The new solution follows IBM's recent announcement
that the company joined Intel and ATT to form a new company called
Cometa Networks to roll out a ubiquitous nationwide network of public
wireless LANs.
According to studies by CAW, more than 25 percent of the three million
truck drivers in the U.S. carry laptops. [1] The benefits of Internet
access to truck drivers are numerous including the ability for drivers to
quickly locate and negotiate loads, to transact banking, to maintain
contact with their business partners and employers, and to track weather
and road conditions.
CAW will deploy 802.11b or Wi-Fi hotspots at selected truck stops and
offer prepaid access cards that act like prepaid calling cards. When
accessing the Wireless Local Area Networks at the truck stop drivers can
access the Internet using wirelessly enabled laptop computers and are
prompted to enter an account number from the prepaid access cards. This
new service is designed to increase the driver's success in a highly
competitive industry.
For security and optimum performance CAW will deploy the Rocksteady NSA
Network Sharing Application and IBM eServer xSeries systems running Linux
as the platform for the new Internet access points. Rocksteady NSA
selectively determines whether the truck driver can enter the network and
dynamically manages their Internet session based on their credentials.
Additional capabilities, such as dynamic bandwidth shaping and metering,
help provide a high level of network performance by allocating and
prioritizing bandwidth usage in real time on a user-by-user basis.
Trucking enterprises can help maximize the return on their IT investment
by utilizing an on demand operating environment through this secure,
reliable and scalable end-to-end mobility solution, said Rich Michos, VP
Linux Servers, IBM. Accessing backend applications and data running
Rocksteady Network software on Linux and IBM Intel-based servers, the new
solution will help streamline the efficiency of the trucking industry's
business processes enabling truckers to do more business from the road.
We wanted truck drivers to be able to enter a truck stop, and purchase a
prepaid card to gain access to the network, much like a pre-paid phone
card, said William Read, CEO, Columbia Advanced Wireless. We require
virtually 100% uptime, and since we don't maintain an IT staff at the
locations, we need a highly reliable solution. We tried other solutions
that simply were not up to the task of performing reliably in a hostile
environment. Fortunately, we have found the integration of the IBM
xSeries systems and Rocksteady's Network Sharing Application meets our
reliability requirements and provides us the ability to rapidly deploy
and easily manage our platforms.
With our expanding relationship with IBM, we can provide cost-effective
solutions that will span 1,000 truck stops within four time zones, said
Kerry Grimes, president and CEO, Rocksteady Networks. CAW wanted a
product that was easy to install and maintain but powerful enough to
handle high-volume Internet access with maximum quality of service. With
IBM's hardware and our software, we were able to provide those services
without requiring IT managers to be onsite, which has the ability to save
CAW thousands of dollars in costs each month.
About CAW, Inc.
Columbia Advanced Wireless, Inc. (CAW) is in the business of marketing
and deploying 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks (WLAN's) to the truck
stop industry. The applied technology allows end users to access the
Internet remotely within a controlled area. The benefits of CAW's service
allows end users to connect to the Internet anywhere at a truck stop
without the limitations of wired telephone ports or other wired business
solutions typically provided by truck stops. Wired service providers are
limited in the number of ports available to the end user and typically

Winblows don't support any Linux file system. So put Winblows

 partitions

the first partition it doesn't understand.

Both of these statements are untrue for Win2k/XP. I read somewhere

driver for Win2k/XP that allows it to use ext2 filesystems. And I run
Win2k, and it has no trouble just skipping partitions it doesn't
recognize and continuing on with ones beyond that.
I KNOW that there are 3rd party utilities to allow win2k/xp to use EXT2
filesystems, but I would not trust them as much as I trust linus on any

that said NTFS file systems can sit anywhere on the disk, as long as a valid
MS/WIN filesystem is on the first logical partiton of the first IDE channel

win2k later, you will have problems, unless you left at least 10 megs as a
dos partion in the begining.

I going to snip part of Civileme post on January 27:

Now this is where Windows has been programmed to fail. As soon as it
sees a non-windows type in the extensions, it stops traversing the
chain, and will miss any windows partitions logically beyond that.
Windows XP home edition also messes with this table in unpredictable
ways, often trying to make the LAST extended partition (if not a Windows
type) into a primary, so that it is COMPLETELY UNSAFE to install XP
after linux. It is possible to recover the problem once you can analyze
it with the rescue CD, but definitely neither for the faint of heart or
 the newbie.

So prior to XP, windows misses any partitions that numerically follow
linux partitons, and beginning with XP it sabotages the partition table
 to make linux unbootable,

I just took for granted what he said.

this is correct, however I believe Civileme is refering to the boot-up record,
not the ability to see and read files.
I have WINme, Mandrake 9.0 and WIN2K installed all over my drives here is what
# df says;

/dev/hda8 2891540305228 2586312 11% /var
so you can see that on my hdc while hdc5 is /home hdc6 s a fat win partiton
that both OSs have no problem seeing and using.
something I just noticed is that while on the graphic for diskdrake it looks
like (all on one line) -[hda1/winME]-[hda5/linux swap]-[hda7/linux /] -
[hda6/fat winD] - [hda8 /var] - [4gigs empty] - [hda4 /winNT] -
so maybe there is something I did that I am not aware of that keeps MS
thinking the hda4 partion is the last partiton on this drive and hda/5,6,7,8
are in the middle of the drive.
Hopefully some one can explain who did that for me? was it diskdrake when I
made the space available for win2k?

so you can see that on my hdc while hdc5 is /home hdc6 s a fat win
partiton that both OSs have no problem seeing and using.
something I just noticed is that while on the graphic for diskdrake it
looks like (all on one line) -[hda1/winME]-[hda5/linux swap]-[hda7/linux
  /] - [hda6/fat winD] - [hda8 /var] - [4gigs empty] - [hda4 /winNT] -
so maybe there is something I did that I am not aware of that keeps MS
thinking the hda4 partion is the last partiton on this drive and
hda/5,6,7,8 are in the middle of the drive.
Hopefully some one can explain who did that for me? was it diskdrake when
I made the space available for win2k?

Thank you for clarifying the whole thing.

Anyway, to stay in the safe side, I will keep placing Windows partition
 first and then Linux.
For sure at least the bootable win partitons. as far as fat32 partitions,
put them anywhere.

 Until I get Windows free.

[newbie] howto for setting up a digital audio workstation with Mandrake 9.1

I would like to reprint something from cooker, since I know Austin does not
possibly have the time to have monitored newbie as well as put this together
for us

and many many THANKS to Austin,

Well, since 9.1 should be out next week, and most of the
kernel/alsa/jack problems seem to be cleared up, I'd like to present
the howto for setting up a digital audio workstation with Mandrake 9.1.
While several specialty distros have tried to come up with a pro
quality, easy to set-up DAW, they have failed or are floundering. What
people don't realize is that you don't need a specialty distro. You
can set up a DAW on Mandrake 9.1 with about six commands. Hopefully
this will be publicised a bit, and may be a good selling point for
Mandrake 9.1.

see http://groundstate.ca/mdkaw.html

Comments/corrections/suggestions are welcome.

Many thanks to Buchan, Danny, and Quel for assistance and ideas.

Enjoy,
Austin

 Hi Joe,

It's been a few months since I looked into this, but I think you have a
 few options.

Apple's Darwin streaming server is free software and can handle mp3 and
 mp4. http://www.apple.com/quicktime/products/qtss/

Real Networks offers a free streaming server (Helix??) but it limits you
to something like 25 simultaneous connections. The license lasts for one
year, and I'm not sure if you just have to renew the license or purchase
a new one. It pretty much streams the proprietary Real formats.
 http://licensekey.realnetworks.com/rnforms/products/servers/eval/index.html
?ulf=b and other free/trial prodcuts for Real:
 http://www.realnetworks.com/products/free_trial.html

Icecast and Icecast 2 are released under the GPL. The original is still
available and will stream mp3; version 2 will stream ogg vorbis!
 http://www.icecast.org/

Depending on what you want to stream (music, speech, or some combo), o/v
now supports low bitrates and has an encoder specifically designed for
speech audio (speex). See http://www.xiph.org/ for more info on those
 codecs.

My first suggestion would be to try and upgrade to a more recent version.
That said, try and start over, this time instead of recomended go for

attempting to keep win on this box, first boot into windows, back up

No Diane. You only get to the hard drive MBR after bypassing the CD
bootup step. But if you can't boot from *any* bootable CD, no matter
whether it is Windows or Linux, then something is wrong with the
hardware (assuming that the BIOS is correctly set up).

Given that it is a new computer, I would take it back to the store and
ask for another one. Carry the Windows and Mandrake boot CDs to show
 them the problem.

 Good luck!
of course we could teach you how to do it from booting with a boot disk you

Make a boot floppy with Windows

If your computer cannot boot from the CDROM and previous methods do
not work, you must make a boot floppy under Windows as follows:

 * insert the CDROM, then open the icon My Computer, right click on
the CDROM drive icon and select Open
 * go into the dosutils directory and double-click on the
   rawwritewin icon
 * insert a blank floppy in the floppy drive
 * select D:\images\cdrom.img in the Image File field (assuming
that your CDROM drive is D:, otherwise replace D: as needed)
 * select A: in the Floppy Drive field then click on Write.

   To begin the installation:

 * insert the CDROM in the drive, as well as the boot floppy, then
 * restart the computer.

when you boot the first time to install, you will have to report the shared

Start over with the boot floppy, when it says hit enter to install or

in that case I type linux 240M) remember the capital M at the end. and then
got thru the install again, and also if you have bios level virus

after trying different setting it still doesn't work. I am fairly sure
that it's a motherboard problem because I tried different NICs without
any success and my 3com works on another PC running mandrake 9.0.

I tried to install with USB,serial and parallel ports, soundcard disable
to free a maximum of IRQ, tried different PC slots and none of that has
 worked.

When I look in KDEcontrol centre informationirq my nic is not listed
but if I look in KDEcontrol centre information PCI the NIC is listed
in the correct IRQ. Another thing, I don't know if it's normal but no

I searched the mailing list to see if somebody had any similar trouble
and found some problems with that board but nothing that could help me.

Do I waste my time with this board and should I consider getting another

What else could I do to have the NIC having his own irq to check that
 this is no the problem?

put the nic in a different pci slot

I saw from the hardware list that mandrakelabs has certified the k7S6A

 It's probably somewhere like $HOME/.gnome/gnome-ppp/gnome-ppp-pid - just

Do you have a newer motherboard. Some newer hardware, particularly
 mobos with
VIA chipsets, does not have acpi implemented properly in the kernel,
 which
 causes what you are describing.

Try hitting the esc key when the LILO menu comes up and typing the
 following
 at the prompt:

 linux noapic acpi=off

and see if that solves the problem.

If it does, upgrade your beta 3 kernel to the latest one in Cooker and
 see if
that fixes the problem also. It did for my machine.

auto sulks and asks me to specify the file type (same result as when I
tried John's solution). It ain't msdos either - any ideas?

  Sir Robin

I may be way outta line here but:
if /mnt is not a separate partition, but on your / partition, wouldn't you
have to mount using the filesystem that your / partition is (ie. ext2, ext3
 or whatever)?

I would think that to use vfat you would have to make the mountpoint on a
 partition that is formatted vfat.

 Just a thought...

 Sharrea

ahhh, the mount point is not formated, the partition is formated if it is a
block device (a drive) but there is no formating the /dev or /proc (etc)
partitions. the mount point tells the OS what filesystem module (?driver? for
win-types) the kernel should use to read the filesystem.

I often say the one thing I learned about computers in 1992 that I still use,
and is still true, is that what ever you buy today will be obosolete in 3
years, and the same goes with software, (actully I have one program that was
written for win95 and I bought in 1995, that I still use almost every day,
and that is winfax for win 95, since I have kept my hourly billing on it as a
faxed document since 1995 but the OS it ran on is no longer avail, good thing
it still runs using other M$products) and I still use pine when I ssh into a
shell account, and it has been around (without much change that I can see)

True. But there are still some security measures that you would want to be
 able to take.
Win2k/XP/etc has IIS installed on them to be servers.
 Rob
I'm not positive this has not changed, but in the past, there are points given
to different programs and based on what type of install you chose and what
sort of packages you selected and how much hard drive space you have, during
the install stage the installer then selects programs for you as basic
install expecting (in the expert install anyway) you to either just go with
what it installs and have you install what ever programs you want after, or
to just use what ever is there. I think the logic has something also to do
with if this program requires some advanced knowledge (something beyond
click mouse and play) then whomever is going to need to use it should also
be capable of downloading and installing it.
Also when installing, one of my complaints like this, is that, if you toggle
to flat durring the package selection (so that the packages are listed
alphabetically instead of by group) there seems to me to be many more
programs available. and they are not listed six times each (once as a kde
desktop app, once as a Gnome app, once as other desktops app and then also
as mulitmedia etc). but it does require a knowledge of what most of the
programs are, and I believe there is a possiblity of installing conflicting
programs this way, or at least screwing up the programs you selected by
de-selecting some part of one program to get a conflicting package installed.

Meaning the interface (tabs, installed, uninstalled, available, not

final releases are generely not as good as the final betas and that the
final release of 9.1 will not be as good as the beta 3 and if so why?

 Marc
I think he is saying it gets better all the time, and this beta is about as
good as the final versions just a number or 2 back

I love this thread...
I suggest jed, kate, joe, nedit, emac or vim, and do it by hand so you know
how to fix what ever your wsiwyg editor screws up. if you can't read the html
produced, how can you fix it?
and
how come, if there is time to go back over it and fix it correctly later, how
come there is not enough time to do it correct the first time?

grep is just a way to use regular words to sort and see only certian info.
in the above command, rpm -qa (asks the rpm program to Query All so -qa) then

that (-i) include WIndowmaker so grep strips out all the answers that don't

OK - bad form to reply to your own posts, but I think I've made it part
way. I've installed postfix and it's running with default settings.
I've installed the imap rpm and can see in webmin that the pop3 server is
 enabled within the xinetd thingy.
No, No, we like it a lot whenyo reply to your own posts, especially if it is
with the correct (ar at least a good) answer.

So now I can check for new messages and presumably if there were some, I
would get them. If I try to send to the server using smtp however, I get
connection refused on port 25. The firewall shouldn't be implicated as
this is coming from the trusted interface, but I opened port 25 just on
 case. No change.

I assume that postfix is providing the smtp server functionality, so maybe
I haven't switched on what needs to the switched on there?

As always, all input gratefully received.

 TIA
 Brian

Trust me: I almost got a PhD in installing Windows and Mandrake this
  week :-)

1.- *First of all*, install Windows 2000/XP.
2.- Create a FAT32 partition to hold data that you want to read/write
  with Windows and Mandrake.
  3.- Install Mandrake.

  It is this easy.

You will get a dual boot system.

 G'day,
Thanks to those who answered. I followed the instructions from
Lanman and Adolpho above, and got this far:
 * I disconnected my 80G HDD - better safe than sorry LOL
 * I fired up Partition Magic and resized the existing NTFS partition
down to 8G, and labelled it windoze.
 * I added another 8G partition, made it FAT32 [on a guess - I figured
if Linux couldn't see files on a NTFS partition it probably couldn't
install in one either:)], labelled it linux
 * set the remaining 22G [I wonder where the other 2G went???] as FAT32
   and labelled it archive.

I fired up windows and moved my data from C: to E: [the newly created
archive partition]. So far so good - windoze sees all three partitions.

Put in Mandrake 9.0 CD1, went through the languages, kbd/mouse, security
  - accepted the defaults as they seemed reasonable.
Setup Filesystems shows a graphical representation something like this:
 +-++-+

 | /mnt/nt | /mnt/win_c |/mnt/win_d |

 +-++-+

This **looks** right, but it's not seeing the labels, and it **seems**
 to be confused:
In linux (it's all about choice) you can call the partiutions what ever you
want, but the system needs to see certain standard partitions.
I would also suggest that you leave the 80 gig in the box, since you will want
to give them mount points that the system will see in linux, and you would
not really want to see the drive letters switched around in windoze either,
(but you might anyway, since in Linux, you control the drive names, and in
Uncle billy's OS he get to make the choice for you, and what he chooses is
anyones guess). but you can name the partition win_e if you like, as long as
you suck it up and consider that the Expert is pretty much equal to
custom on the install of most Win Software, and look for the options. As
long as you do not format, you will not loose any info on the ntfs or fat
partitions, and when you create linux partions, they do not need / nor sould
be formated via PM, just let the diskdrake part of the install do that, but
do it as expert, and untill you get used to Linux and the differnet partition
schemes, just go with that second 8 gigs as one big / partiton.

what it calls win_c is actually E and what it calls win_d
is actually F [D: is the CDROM]. To be fair, it does say just a guess
in the details box when I click on each partition.
But: there doesn't seem to be any way [that I can see] to be sure.
And even if I was pretty sure that the second partition is the one to
put Linux on, I don't see any way on this screen to tell it to do that.
click on the red zone of that partition, that will select that partition, and
get you some more choices (in expert)

Auto Allocate says: not enough space for auto-allocating
 The wizard gives three options:
  - erase the entire disk
  - use the free space on the windoze partition
  - use the windoze partition for loopback

I clicked on toggle to expert mode [with some trepidation, because
clearly I'm not - LOL] and found a button to format the partitions,
but I chickened out, because I can't be sure which partition is which.
And anyhow, the partitions are already formatted FAT32 - do they
need to be formatted again to put Linux on them?
I guess I'm looking for some button that says install here...

 ...asking too much? g

Afaik it is a new standard set by the X-Free86 consortium for the new
XWindow 4.2.x (i hope thats the right version #) graphics output
system. Hm... In simpler terms: XF86Config is the old standard cfg
file for Xwindow up to ver 3.x.x IIRC. When XWindow 4.x.x came around
they needed to add new parameters to that config file. Instead of
re-writing it from scratch they appended a new file with some of the old
parameters some new ones added in for newer graphics cards. If you
compare the two files they are nearly identicaly in all respects except
that the XF86Config-4 one contains some newer modelines some other

that's about right if you have a -4 it uses that, if not it knows you are in
