Typical to not listen to what dad says. Ask Jim McCarthy about that. :-)

Not much different then us mortals. We learn to fly then learn to read
air. The second part seems to be the toughest.

Get him a DLG to learn air. Get him a performance plane to fly and build

Re: [RCSE] National Fun Fly

Don't you think that the pilots that landed out in Unlimited on the 1st day
treated the second day as a fun fly? It was for me. (There is no
dropout round.)

When your not competing in the top 20 it's just a fun fly. If you would
take a poll, most pilots would say, I'm here to have fun.

Don't understand why a fun fly would gather more people. You either want
to fly with other people or you don't. Some pilots are just introverts
that fly their own air.

Now there is an idea, basically what I was getting at, contests and fun
every year. De-emphasize the contest aspect as the die hards know who
they are, and will always show up, we need to attract the rest, the guys
who don't always come, who care less about rigorous competition, who
will support the National Flying site with their presence if it is
relevant to their interests, not the minority of top level competition
pilots.

would have Monday for 2M, Tues and Wed for Open, Thurs would be RES,

Fri

morning hand launch and Friday afternoon NOS. Events like F3B, F3J,
X-Country and Scale would be on the weekend before or after.

 JE

Would probably be the end of NOS. Just not that many flying it. It

won't

be long and NOS will be 30 year old planes. It is so limited. If

they

set
the category for 20 year old planes (more like it was when it

started), it

would open up the field for more fliers.

I would come an extra couple days early if they had XC and Scale every
year.
It doesn't even have to be a contest, just two days set aside at the
beginning of the schedule.

T

With the introduction of production planes like the Ava and the

Topaz,

RES
is now the fastest growing segment of plane in this neck of the

woods.

Where it used to be just a few people it is now nearly even with the
 amount
of Open class entries. There are several fliers that have won Open
 contests
with these planes and it isn't a fluke. Over the last year I have
consistently scored better with my Topaz than with my Open class

plane,

primarily because of the ability to just drop it on the spot and

have it

stick. They are so light they don't carry too much momentum. They
 thermal
easier, the handling is excellent, they just don't like as much

wind,

but
then again, they can successfully be ballasted.

In the big monthly contests SWSA holds, the number of Open class

planes

is
probably around 30, RES is about 20 and 2M is about 10. It seems
 completely
upside down to me that 2M at the NATS gets 2 days while RES gets 1/2

a

 day.
Additionally, the awards banquet is held before RES and NOS are even
 flown,
pushing it down further from a competitive event to more of a fun

fly

 afterthought.

Trying to understand the symbolism here of ICON.

The plate is the America Remembers series. $25 is donated to a fund for
victims of terrorism and local governments for training, equipment and

Re: [RCSE] soaring weather question

2005-07-12 Thread Steve Meyer

Michael, Pat described it well.

I as well have to be sure I pick the good days for soaring. With a commute
of over an hour I want to be sure the drive is worth it.

In the Chicago area the weather can be quite different depending on where
you are at. Closer to the lake there tends to be less lift due to lake
cooling effect. A good indicator as mentioned by Pat are the cumulus
clouds. Watch how they break up as they get closer to the lake. Sometimes
many miles west. But that does not necessarily mean lift is not present.

SOAR flies at mainly at two locations Plainfield and Hampshire. A good
distance from Chicago, the lake does not have any effect there. I have
left the field with 90+ degree weather to arrive home with mid 70's
temp. And rain is a whole different story...

One of the private weather stations I look at that is close to Hampshire,
http://weather.lindsay.com/

I looked at your website, nice link for the satellite view of the old SOD
farm location in Plainfield.

I live in a city and can't verify that there are good thermal conditions
based on hawks (there aren't any), wind shifts (tall buildings), etc.
How can one tell that there is an inversion? Are certain air pressure
trends and day/night temperature or humidity patterns indicative of an
inversion?

I would like to be able with fair certainty to determine if sufficient
soaring conditions exist before driving out of the city. I'm in Chicago

On the maiden flight, Joe Wurts asked me to tow his icon (thats usually when

Joe holding his Icon.

Prior to zooming, the cambered the whole wing (he wanted to drag me down de

Well, this is pretty much normal right? Not if you have a parachute that
knows how to circle a thermal. Instead of coming down to be recovered,
the chute kept going on and on and on it went untill we lost sight of
it. and honestly, it was going UP and it was not an optical

seem to help myself and feel the urge to take a pot shot at him.
At any rate, Gordy is a big boy, and a great guy who can take care of
himself. I’m still waiting to get invited to another steak BB-cue

fall I’ll have to take care of that.

following.

3 pilots are registered exclusively for HLG - 10.3%
2 pilots are registered exclusively for F3J - 4.3%
2 pilots are registered exclusively for 2M - 2.2%
16 pilots are registered exclusively for UNL - 12.8%
4 pilots are registered exclusively for RES - 4.8%
1 pilot is registered exclusively for NOS - 2.9%

5 pilots are registered exclusively for F3J and UNL - 4.0%
4 pilots are registered exclusively for RES and NOS - 4.6%
9 pilots are registered exclusively for 2M and UNL - 7.1%
2 pilots are registered exclusively for 2M and RES - 1.7%

3 pilots are registered in every event - 2.0% One of them is in (Jr or Sr)
class!

2 pilots registered in Jr / Sr class

20 pilots are registered for HLG and F3J - 35.7%
20 pilots are registered for HLG and 2M - 20.6%
21 pilots are registered for HLG and UNL - 15.8%
8 pilots are registered for HLG and RES - 7.6%

36 pilots are registered for F3J and 2M - 36.4%
40 pilots are registered for F3J and UNL - 30.3%
20 pilots are registered for F3J and RES - 18.0%

81 pilots are registered for 2M and UNL - 61.4%
55 pilots are registered for 2M and RES - 48.2%

73 pilots are registered for UNL and RES - 53.7%

(Accuracy 2% - 9% depending on sample because of missing data.)

I have surmised the following.
It appears that 2M and F3J pilots are the most versatile. Entering in more
events

The closer the events are together the better the cross participation.
RES needs to replace one day of 2 Meter. :-)

I would have to argue number 2.

Damage to linkages does not happen because they are external. It happens
because you do not get the flaps up before dorking a landing.

However similar damage could occur with either method.

Take 1/2 or 3/4 copper or brass pipe cut into various sizes, whatever
fits over CG in fuse. Drill hole in about 1/2 away from middle and insert
bolt. (This is important as lead is hard to drill.) Now melt lead and
pour into tube. I made a funnel out of sheet aluminum. Drill a hole in
bottom of fuse 1/2 in front of CG. Now slide into fuse drop bolt through
hole install nut or wing nut.

I did this for the Emerald. It was tricky getting the ballast in and
out. Long tools were required. But it worked.

LSF guys do a great job (in cooperation with AMA) of putting on a host of
soaring events, most of which are very demanding from a personnel
standpoint; and they only have a week to in which to cram all those events.
I know that I am not telling you, or anyone else who reads this and has
actually been to the Soaring NATS, anything new.

In real estate, something I have a passing knowledge of, the three key words
are: LOCATION! LOCATION! LOCATION! The IHLGF has that in spades. When
someone plans to come to the IHLGF, they can be assured of four things which
few other locations can boast...and they all have to do with being located
in Southern California: 1. Great weather, relatively speaking; 2. Great
flying conditions (if you don't mind a dirt field); 3. A large contingent of
very talented pilots; and, 4. One of the top tourist destinations in the
world. In all of the years (12) the IHLGF has been held, there has only been
two delays of starting the contest on time. Both had to do with an early
morning misting. There has always been 6 rounds flown on Saturday and seven
(including the fly-offs) rounds flown on Sunday.

Those are the basic reasons why the IHLGF has been able to be as successful
as it has been. Just the dumb luck of being in the right place at the right
time!

WOW.

Dudes, this was too cool. Just got back from two solid days of
flying. I have a lot of photos and video, but I wanted to make a post
this evening while I am fresh back from the event.

TK and I arrived Fri. afternoon driving in from Chicago and there were A
LOT of people there. I registered as pilot 50 at that time, and there
were more after me. Busy flight line was the first thing that struck
me, two tugs working hard and a nice line of sailplanes queued up for a
tow. After registering and checking out the cool looking event T shirt
and hat that was in the registration bag, I went on to socializing a bit
in the pits. But the constant series of tows was just enticing me to
fly. I built my DG 800s and walked it out to the flight line, Capn'
Jack was all too eager to help me with another set of eyes. I got an
excellent tow, Peter Goldsmith towed me up with his cub and let him take
me up to clouds. I told him I was off, he replies... great Jim, I
think my wings are freezing over 8-) Needless to say I flew that
flight for awhile! 8-)

I landed and Cliff Bryan was pulling his new ASH-26 out, so I followed
him out to the flight line. I ended up being his second set of eyes,
and Cliff got that bad boy hooked up and skied out. After flying around
for a long period of time, he asked me if I wanted to try. 8-) What a
wonderful model, Cliff wasn't in a rush for it back, but he did check
the battery levels twice while I was flying, so it must have been a
pretty long flight. Such a sweet model.

Skip Miller was just pounding the cross country course all day long, I
think he went over 26 miles.

Then I wander back to the pits, see Capn' Jack over at the tents and he
asks if I want to fly the Ventus 2AX. By this time the air at about
3:30-4pm is about the best its been all day, and I am like SURE! I'LL
FLY IT. Jack let me fly it up the tug and I flew it for a long time,
40 minutes or longer, and then the ultimate TX who-ore himself, McCarthy
couldn't take it any longer so he took the sticks, and he flew it for
another 40 mins. Finally I pried his fingers from the pizza box and I
got it back for some more, and then TK wandered by and he took it for a
long flight, and then finally back to Jack, the last sailplane to land
on Fri. I forgot the final launch count for the day, but the tugs went
through 10 gallons of gas.

Of course then all the electric fun fly stuff came out... and then over
to a BBQ at John Diniz house for excellent food, drink, electric heli
flying in the driveway, and John did a small jam session in his basement
later while McCarthy tried to finish building the scale model he didn't
quite get flying earlier in the day. Just more fun!

Today was a windier, with more people in attendance, but less of the
flying at anyone time. Only one tug worked the flight line
constantly. I flew once in the morning when the wind was calmer, but
decided to help work the flight line and snap pictures and video in
between the chores. Paul Siegel and Steve Siebenaler flew over from
Ohio in Paul's Super Cub to check out the action and really put in a
nice landing on the grass strip. Flying continued non-stop all day
long. Later in the day there was a raffle for 1:1 scale glider rides,
and although I didn't win one, I have never been up in a glider so I
bought a ride. What a HOOT! So I got to sit in the front seat of 2-33,
did an aerotow, and even got to fly it awhile. Shot a lot of video up
there, and got some of flying site from above, with little sailplanes
and tugs flying beneath us.

Now that tops off a great couple of days! 8-) Don't miss this event
next year, apparently it has really grown, now in its 3rd year. This is
my first, and I really regret missing the first two.

Pix and video tomorrow.

I have been successful in using Spider Wire or dental floss
to saw out an old servo. Usually there is enough room to guide the
line under the corner of the servo and then just work the line back and
forth. The leftover adhesive/goop can then be scraped
out.

Bought a new carbon Pike Superior and am building it out this weekend. Its
going to be a piece of cake as I got the premade wiring harness with it. I
hate making the wiring harness for any plane-this harness is really a time
saver for me. The plane comes with the servo tray/bulkhead already
installed in the fuse. The cut outs for the ele/rudder servos are already
made and leave little room for anything much bigger than say a 368/etc.
What are you guys using for your elevator? Also, how are you getting
adequate TD type flap travel on your top actuated flaps?
Thanks, Walter

Re: [RCSE] OVSS...line break policy?

2005-05-16 Thread Steve Meyer
I like Barry's thinking. The majority of line breaks I have seen have been
the equipments fault.Even in stiff wind #290 is very hard to break.

It is not that difficult to watch a launch and determine if it is excessive
line tension that breaks the line. Usually much after 60 degrees. After
60 degrees, a launch should be flown out. And if the recovery launch is
more than 45 seconds after last launch a re-flight of the whole group ensues.

don't launch any differently there than normally, but the line at a
contest is sometimes questionable, was crossed and dragged by the timer

While I guess it's possible that guys might try to purposely break a line,

it's hard or maybe not possible to break.

When we stagger launches in seeded MOM, the high score is always launching
first, the last guy always has a slight advantage, even then, lift is not
often apparent right off launch.

I suggest a time limit from first guy to last guy, maybe 2 minutes, but
launch master uses his head
If it's longer, you get bumped to the next round where it's tougher.
If it's the last flight group, move fast. More than one break, everybody
comes down. Seems like this is pretty much what we've been doing to date.

It really sucks to be penalized for a line break, particularly when nearly
every time, it's a weak line that causes the break. If someone has
travelled a great distance to be essentially tossed out for a line break,
it ain't so fun anymore.

There's enough dumb things I can do to blow a contest, purposeful line
breaks aren't in my bag of tricks to find the air. I don't believe that
most pilots play that way; bad booga booga, not likely to really work, and
might have the result Gordy got, and richly deserved, if he was really
playing that way.

We've done ok to date, seems to me. I agree that we don't want to
regulate the fun out of contests, but if I break a line, I expect a way to
get in the air to fly, that flight group or the next.

Hey, the stakes are really high!!

Re: [RCSE] Birds in Cancun

Yes, Jak and Ray are correct. Thank you very much. Google found many good
sources and pics.

The Magnificent Frigatebird
http://www.enature.com/fieldguide/showSpeciesFT.asp?fotogID=568curPageNum=8recnum=BD0056
Very entertaining to watch, an effortless soaring bird. A regular
residence of the Mexican Caribbean. I awoke one morning at sunrise to
watch a whole line of Frigatebirds up and down the coast. Below them was
an Eagle sloping the buildings, hunting for fish. Below that Pelicans
workings the various sloping opportunities close in, swooping down and
skimming the surf taking advantage of the ground effect. Then the plunge
for a fish. All to the sound of pounding surf and a warm sea
breeze. Think I will Zen out for a moment before heading to Iowa for a
contest.

But first... I have heard of many Bird names used for sail planes but not
the Frigate.
Eagle, Pelican, Stork, and Black Hawk come to mind right away. How many
more are there?

I can't be sure, but I would guess what you saw were frigate birds. They
are famous for attacking other gulls etc, which will drop, or even
regurgitate any fish onboard.

[RCSE] Soaring and Birds

2005-05-13 Thread Steve Meyer
I witnessed some very interesting soaring birds on my recent vacation to
Cancun. These birds never flapped unless they were chasing a sea
gull. They reminded me of the Bid Bird sailplane, I guess the original
designer decided to copy these birds.

Anyone know the name of these birds?

Re: [RCSE] Blind Nut Stripped

2005-05-08 Thread Steve Meyer
I had the same problem. It looks like the blind nut is aluminum and the
threads were slowly wearing away. Through further investigation the
supplied screw was only engaging about half the threads. So I took the
middle screw moved it to the front and purchased a 30mm to use in the
middle. All seems to look good for now. I think a thread lubricant would
be a good idea to help preserve the existing threads that are there.

My Shop Theory book tells me that an 8-36 SAE machine screw has a major

my Eraser. Has anybody had a similar problem and found an easy solution? I
am thinking of tapping the blind nut to accept an 8-36 cap screw since the
4.0 metric cap screw does not engage correctly.

So, the discussion about the suitability of Corvettes for hauling

should have the following attributes:

1) Space to haul 2 unlimited planes and a 2 meter plane + winch, toolbox,
1 Optima battery, turnaround, radio cases + at least 1, preferably 2 passengers
2) Fast and comfortable for those long hauls to away contests
3) Reasonable fuel economy (20-21mpg highway minimum)
4) All wheel drive, since here in Washington the passes are often a mess,
roads are often wet, and I like to ski after work in the winter.
5) Decent driving dynamics
6) Enough clearance to travel forest service roads to slope sites
7) NOT a minivan

Here's my short list:
--Volvo XC70
--Audi A6 Avant
--Audi S4 Avant (not sure if long enough)
--Dodge (Mercedes) short wheelbase Sprinter (no AWD yet, but likely for
2007 model year)
--Subaru whatchamacallit wagon

I have an old Land Rover 110 that has been a project vehicle for 2 years
and is now nearing completion. Size-wise, it's about perfect, but it is
slow, lumbering, and eats high octane petrol like there's no tomorrow
(curse the DOT and EPA for not getting us decent diesel fuel sooner; I'd
love to have a nice 300 Tdi rather than the V8). Plus, the HVAC system is
useless - pretty much windows up or down. In the plus column, however, it
will get you to any slope site you like and then some. It's also got a
rooftop tent, which might be nice for those 2-day contests.

Let's hear some suggestions!
