Aha! Different then. You just need to update your SbS on VBA. Go to your VBA web access screen (GUI). One of the icons there (maybe open box at the bottom left (I'm not at home or I could look). One of the options is to update SbS I think. Do this and it will download and update. I'm not sure if they have the official 7.5.4 for Vortexbox setup to update yet. Since you're on VB 1.5, which is based on Fedora 11, you have several choices for upgrading to SBS 7.5.4: 1. Stay on Fedora 11 and VB 1.5 and upgrade to the official Slim Devices SBS 7.5.4: Login to your VortexBox; see http://info.vortexbox.org/tiki-index.php?page=Login. Then enter Code: rpm -Uvh http://downloads.slimdevices.com/SqueezeboxServer_v7.5.4/squeezeboxserver-7.5.4-1.noarch.rpm This is the simplest solution, but you won't have all the new features in VB 1.8, like DVD ripping. 2. Upgrade to Fedora 14 and VB 1.8 using the command-line upgrade; see http://vortexbox.org/documentation/how-do-i-update-my-vortexbox-from-version-1-5-to-the-current-release/ This will preserve all your SBS settings, plugins, etc. but you can run into problems. After the upgrade, you'll have SBS 7.5.4 from the VortexBox repository. If you run into trouble, post on the VortexBox forum and we'll try to help. This in-place upgrade from Fedora 11 to Fedora 14 is not always an error-free process. 3. Upgrade to Fedora 14 and VB 1.8 doing a clean install from the iso; see http://vortexbox.org/documentation/vortexbox-quick-install-guide/. You'll have to figure out what additional steps are needed because of your 6TB setup. Backup all your SBS settings, plugins, and playlists to another computer before you start, and restore them after the upgrade, or else you'll lose them. After the install, you can upgrade to the latest VB code and pick up SBS 7.5.4 from the VortexBox repository. If you choose 2. or 3., be sure to have a complete backup of your VBA media library before you start. -- Ron Olsen Ron Olsen's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=9233 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=83244 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I havent read all the posts here - My two cents - I would rip to WAV using foobar with SOX SRC (signal rate converter) VHQ linear, converting to 24/96. I would also use a PC and ethernet. A PC has enough power to handle the higher bit rate. Not all converters are the same. I also have dbpoweramp. They use SSRC as a SRC. Not as good in my opinion. Forget your idea of TOUCH USB VBA. This won't work. Keep in mind that the VBA could sit next to your router (it doesn't need to be next to your stereo or TOUCH). If the TOUCH can't connect reliably back to your network via WIFI, have you considered either ethernet over powerline or ethernet over CATV (MoCa). So, for example, you plug a powerline adapter in next to your router and connect to your router with ethernet, and another powerline adapter near your touch. Then you connect your touch via ethernet to the powerline adapter. Now you have ethernet connection between your touch and your router. -- garym garym's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=17325 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=83244 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

tmauceri;611931 Wrote: I would like to understand this better. Is it that each song contains embedded data called a Tag which contains multiple fields. I thought that each field was a seperate tag and that they were associated with the CD as a whole. That's correct, although a 'field' is often called a 'tag' (as in the ARTIST tag), so it can sometimes be confusing. I'm not sure if 'field' is a universally accepted term, but many people here use Mp3tag as a tag editor and that's the term used internally by that software. With ID3v2 tags, fields are sometimes referred to as 'frames'. Files can also contain multiple tags. It's common for an Mp3 file, for instance, to have both an ID3v1 tag and an ID3v2 tag (for compatibility reasons), and sometimes even an APEv2 tag. This is less common in other types of files, where most have just one accepted tagging standard. When my VBA rips a CD it creates 3 extra files besides the flac files. Two are the album art (cover and folder). The third and I am blanking on the extension, I thought contained the CD data or contained the tags. Some ripping software will create a .m3u file, which is a playlist of the tracks on the CD. In its extended form it does contain some metadata, but it's usually minimal and isn't used by Squeezebox Server as far as I know. Some ripping software can create a .cue file (or CUE sheet) which is a detailed description of the CD layout that references the audio files ripped from the CD. These usually also contain CD metadata. CUE sheets have a couple of uses: One is for burning a CD from ripped files. Another is seen when ripping a whole CD to a single audio file. Then the CUE sheet is used to determine track boundaries. CUE sheets _can_ be used by Squeezebox Server for gathering metadata, but usually only for file formats that don't have a tagging standard, such as WAV. -- JJZolx JJZolx's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=10 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=83244 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I then added the various bands to the song titles for documentation. I'll add Gram Parsons to Album Artist. Yes, Album Artist is usually only filled in if you choose to. There are a few different views on this and they are equally useful I think. One view is put an album artist on every track (even though for most CDs the album artist will equal the track artist). Another view is to only include album artist on CDs where there are different track artists (this could be a true compilation (i.e., a movie soundtrack or greatest hits of 1969 sort of thing) or even a CD that has one or more tracks with multiple artists. I lean toward the latter approach. I also add a COMPILATION =1 tag for true compilations. Also, you don't have to remove the track artist info at all as you've done for Parsons. You can leave the track artist (which is just the ARTIST field) with the different artists (e.g., Gram Parsons, Flying Burritto Brothers, International Submarine Band, etc.) and still make the ALBUM ARTIST tag for all these tracks as Gram Parsons. EAC might do it. EAC is primarily a ripping tool, ripping CDs to wav, and then using flac.exe to transcode wav to flac. I'm not sure how you would set up EAC to start from wav files, but since you have to use the exact same flac.exe package to do the transcoding I personally don't really see the benefit of bringing EAC into the equation. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=83244 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

There are various ways. The FLAC Frontend utility that comes with flac (flac.sourceforge.net) will do it. So will dBpoweramp, and foobar2000 may do it as well. After you've converted you'll need to use a good tagging program to add tags, because the WAV files probably won't have them. If the filenames are sensible then adding tags is quick and easy with something like mp3tag. If the filenames are not sensible you'll have to do some typing. -- aubuti aubuti's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2074 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=83244 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

I've been using DVD Audio Extractor to rip flac files in there native resolution from DVD-A discs I own, in stereo of course. I read in one of the forums, this one or AVS, That the SBT will play back DD or DTS files in 5.1 as long as they are decoded and ripped to flac. These files would be 24/48. I know optical or coax out can support this resolution, but hadn't read anything about the SBT being able to play multi-channel media. So I ripped Donald Fagen's The Nightfly in 5.1 24/48 and tried playing it through the SBT, but all I got was stereo in and out. But beware of the placebo effectif you can, get someone else to make the changes and listen a bit both ways so you are doing a blind test. For me, there is absolutely no difference in either my TOUCH or my TRANSPORTER. In general I'm in the camp that the soundcheck mods make a small but noticeable improvement - a little less hardness, a little more roundness to the sound. I'm guessing this is because of less RF interference. As far as the specific server side question: I don't notice a difference in SQ, but I do notice a difference in performance. Less delays, clicks, rebufferings, etc. Especially with 24/96 material. Not that there are a lot of problems when using the onboard decoding, just that they are more or less eliminated when switching to server side. That alone is a good enough reason for me to make the switch. There is one small downside to server side though. If you have an older SB player that doesn't native play hi-res, and play it synched to a Touch, the hi-res won't play over the synched player, as the server will output the native hi-res, and your lesser player won't be able to handle it. Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Newbie with Questions for the Experts
Using ethernet can make 24/96 more snappy wether you decode on server or not. it was almost impossible to use wifi and 24/96 the first weeks of Touch life but this has improved greatly . Seems like WPA2 decryption uses a lot of cpu making it somewhat sluggish ? to handle. Run ethernet wires if possible. The whole experience is much faster an snappier when using the screen cuing up lists etc (then you can safely kill the wifi drivers etc in Touch saving even more cpu cycles) . Just try it wired I don't think you want to go back if you tried it. This wifi fad has gone a bit to far , remember when wifi was an option on the SB3 (you could buy one without wifi board) . Wifi is not a real network, it does a very good job faking a network but it's not the same as a real network :) So if networkable things like a server a router and a Touch is sitting at the same place all the time why not wire the stuff ? Wifi is for the mobile stuff like laptops, Radio ? etc that you lug around the house. Think of wifi as a finite resource you can save wifi by wire up as much stuff as possible, not just squeezeboxes and then you have a lot of wifi when you need it. -- Mnyb Main hifi: Touch + CIA PS +MeridianG68J MeridianHD621 MeridianG98DH and assorted amps SiriuS, Classe' Primare and Dynadio speakers, Contour 4 Contour Center, and Contour 1.3SE rear ch. However, *my subjective impression* is that decoding on the server yields marginally clearer sound. As has been pointed out, it's easy to try. No SW mod necessary! But don't just listen repeatedly to the same brief sound clip. Try it either way for a couple of days at the time. (I know, it's not quite A/B, but if you listen repeatedly to the same brief clip, you will very likely find no difference). However, the full benefit of soundcheck's mods is only likely to be had when most of the SW mods are implemented. The only really good way to find out is to try different combinations. A number of people really like optical with a multi-strand glass cable. The hard part is you need to try several different cables (price does NOT automatically mean its going to sound best). In my system the best coax cable is a cheap little thing that came with my first external DAC MANY years ago. It beats out some quite expensive cables. John S. Really. What are peoples preferences for digital out, Optical or Coaxial? One issue, make sure you let ipeng fully load up the album list, etc. after you've done a clear and rescan on your SbS. It may take a few minutes depending on the library size. But after this, it should be quite responsive. Every time I backup the VBA the VBAPlayer turns on and becomes another device on the iPeng. I had an instance when the VBAPlayer was selected and I couldn't figure out why the squeeze box wouldn't play remotely through the iPeng, but would play if I went directly to the SB. I'm learning every time I encounter a problem. -- tmauceri tmauceri's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=41450 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=83244 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch

There have been bugs against it, but they wont fix this. It's decision they made for some reason I cant understand at all. You have to use the web-UI in squeezeboxserver. Wich is not such a problem you just have to rmeber to do it while fiddling with your files. I read in a review, last night, that you can set an automatic, clear and rescan under the advanced tab in the SB server software. When you open the tab there is a pulldown menu on the left. I set it up for 3 AM in the morning. -- tmauceri tmauceri's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=41450 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=83244 ___ Touch mailing list Touch@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/touch
