Even worse (as if you thought it could be) - data dictionaries can be incomplete or wrong. This added to the lack of enforcement of data integrity and constraints usually causes these toolsets to fail (indeed, even the UV/ODBC driver fails too!)... so good luck! Rocket released U2 Metadata Manager to assist in this respect and is designed to allow forward and backwards capability. Although, support for this in UV is limited to the latest official release... so your alternative is UV/ODBC... Re: [U2] SORT reports line length, change right margin?
Randy, SETPTR can be used to set the line length/page width. SETPTR ,145,NODEFAULT,BRIEF Should set it to 145 characters. NODEFAULT says do not changes anything else and BRIEF suppresses the "OK to set" prompt. At the end you could/should reset it to 132. Of course, in a proc, put an H before SETPTR and a P on the next line. Re: [U2] UV full screen editor
Nirvan, I second AccuTerm WED. In addition to WED, I have created a couple of other commands using AccuTerm to run Windows programs. One of these is a compare program that opens 2 programs (items) in Winmerge. Winmerge is a windows compare/merge program that is very useful for locating changes in text files. It allows copying of data from either item to the other and when I exit it, I have a prompt to update the original items. Thus it does both a compare and edit. Winmerge knows nothing about MV so not so useful on multivalues. The second one opens a program (item) in windows grep which displays lines containing a search string. I have samba setup so I can use Winmerge, windows grep or any windows editor directly from Windows. I use Ultraedit which has a very useful hex mode. For data items containing multivalues and subvalues, AE is my choice. HTH. Tony, As usual, you make some good points, however, I have a little different viewpoint. For the past 20 years I have worked for several "mom and pop" companies. These companies have refused to provide training for their employees including me and are very slow to adopt new developments in this business. I get reasons like, "for what I'm paying you, you should already know ever thing", "when so and so got back from training, they told me 'I know enough to get started, but I'm no expert', so no more training." (I guess the boss thinks a few days in class make you an expert!), "I'll send you when we get a customer to buy the xyz product" and several more I can't remember at the moment. Once, I was charged with supporting a customer with a new product and I was "allowed" to attend the same 3 day FREE training as the customer!! The customer had a couple of programmers that dug into it and within a couple of DAYS they knew more about it than I did, but I was still supposed to act like I knew what I was doing! Very frustrating. Any kind of Pick related training is always "somewhere else" and when the employer won't pay for you to go, what do you do? I understand it costs a lot but not being properly trained costs too. It seems a lot of employers want someone with specific experience instead of looking at your potential and ambition. So .NET people need to understand the difference between WebForms and MVC, and adapt to generics, lambdas, and dynamic types. Java people need to adjust to changes in frameworks, networking, security, and XML parsing. PHP people need to understand competing frameworks as well as balance their server-side skills with JavaScript and related client frameworks. Any browser developer needs to shift with browser changes, now HTML5, CSS3, etc. And some of us need to do all of the above and then some. But what changes in the Pick world? Not much. And how do a lot of Pick people respond to that? By not feeling a need to do anything but R83-compatible BASIC. There are a lot of jobs out there for developers of new UI's for existing MV apps, but few people available who can satisfy the demand. And yet Pick people have had nearly two decades to improve their skills. Every developer here should be qualified for the job associated with this thread, because that ad looks pretty much like any other ad in this industry these days. I'm not trying to paint every Pickie as a dinosaur or a laggard - far from it. I'm just saying there are too many people who still only know BASIC while there have been any number of opportunities to move beyond that. And there are any number of examples of people in the mainstream who are in a constant mode of adaptation to prove that this is not only possible but the established norm. We are where we are in the Pick industry because Pick people generally become complacent in the belief that they are already using the best database in the world, so they don't need to learn anything else. That's just wrong at so many levels. That cripples the industry, making it more difficult for VARs to sell their software and for the DBMS providers to continue investing in this niche market. And let's face it, the additional problem that many here face is that the developer base is now aging, and it's difficult to start from scratch and jump on Mr Toad's Wild Technology Ride. We just can't do that anymore - myself included. What this means is that many people need to recognize their own limitations, and transition their approach to finding employment and consulting gigs. Re: [U2] Consuming Web Services
Will and Brian, I had a similar experience. I indexed a file that had over a million records with the same code. All was ok for a couple of hours and then Universe crashed with something like "out of string space". It was ugly! Had this worked, it would have been a great benefit but . I expermented with combining 3 attributes to reduce the max count to around 100,000 but the boss isn't willing to try again. Don Robinson --- From: Brian Leach To: 'U2 Users List' Sent: Friday, October 5, 2012 8:59 AM Subject: Re: [U2] Consuming Web Services Will > I don't understand what's wrong with indexing, can you clarify this point, and I'll wipe out a fix in three days :) Well for a start I didn't say there's anything wrong, I said it could be improved - not the same thing! But as to specifics, take the following scenario (UniVerse specific): - Grab a transaction file for say, 10 million records. - Assume a reasonable key length say 10 chars. - Add a field with two states (open/closed, male/female, that kind of thing). - Index it, and watch what happens to the performance on that file. - Better still, don't use an existing file! Create a new file and a program to copy or build the content in basic and show a counter every 1000 records. At the start it will be quick. After about 500,000 you can grab a beer in between the counters. The problem is, that a UniVerse index is very good at establishing the index key: it has a nice B+tree format with a decent level of fan-out. But when it comes to the list of primary keys being indexed against each index key, that's really just treated as a block of data. If you have a good ratio with a lot of index keys (date*type*something_else) each of which gives a relatively short list of primary keys you can get very good indexing performance. But it isn't very clever when you have a small number of index keys to a large list of primary keys. So every time you changed the flag value in the file above it would have to load up the two lists (one for old value, one for new), locate and delete from the old and locate/fail/append to the new, each list averaging 11 byte * 5 million entries. And then write it back to a succession of oversize blocks in the index file. Now you might say - well, you wouldn't index a transaction file like that. And you would be right - because of the design of the index. But it's a perfectly legitimate and reasonable thing to want to do. How to better manage a large index list is, of course, the question. Since it is a large list into which elements are potentially inserted/deleted in order, the list itself could be made into a set of B+Tree pages over a certain threshold, reducing the cost of location/insertion and location/deletion. Other databases use techniques such as key deltas and compression to alleviate this. And I'm sure there are better options if I could be bothered to research them. So there you go, Will. Your job for the weekend. Redesign the UniVerse indexing so it works for large lists, and get Rocket to adopt it. :) Brian -Original Message- From: u2-users-boun...@listserver.u2ug.org [mailto:u2-users-boun...@listserver.u2ug.org] On Behalf Of Wjhonson Sent: 04 October 2012 16:43 To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: Re: [U2] Consuming Web Services ___ U2-Users mailing list U2-Users@listserver.u2ug.org http://listserver.u2ug.org/mailman/listinfo/u2-users ___ U2-Users mailing list U2-Users@listserver.u2ug.org http://listserver.u2ug.org/mailman/listinfo/u2-users

Brian, Larry, and Robert (for the explanation to the others of my predicament). I have been trying to figure out how to redirect the www.u2ug.org to Brian's new webserver (IP) without disrupting the listserver.u2ug.org. Robert you are correct that Network Solutions does not host the domain record but merely points to the appropriate domain named server (angelichost.net, Larry). Network Solutions would not allow me to simply point to an IP address, it's requires 2 named servers. I was thinking about have Network Solutions redirect it, but that requires Network Solutions to host the DNS and I didn't want to disrupt this list. I attempting to go through the solutions one by one and was at a point of giving up =). Now that I know all the players involved (Specifically, Larry) it seems that he can redirect www.u2ug.org from angelichost.net server. (knowledge is always a good thing). Sorry for the long post, domain name resolution is often misunderstood (kind of like people referring to somename.com as a "top level domain" or TLD - it's not, it's a 2nd level domain. The TLD is "com".) The SOA nameservers in question are controlled by angelichost.net not Network Solutions (unless NS has some connection to Angelic I'm unaware of which is entirely possible). The only authoritative nameservers for the domain are ns9 and ns10 on angelichost.net's network. Anything else would have to be caching. Name resolution is hierarchical and works from right to left... ORG, U2UG.ORG, etc... The reason it works from anywhere is when you type it in locally, it will go to the one of the 13 root nameservers, aka (letter a-m).root-servers.net, (run by Verisign/Network Solutions and MANY others including NASA, DOD, Cogent, etc.) if not in cache based on the TLD in this case .ORG, it will then ask for the nameservers for the next level (U2UG.ORG in this case). In this case it will get ns9/ns10.angelichost.net. Root nameservers do not contain the zone records for the hosts themselves only the nameservers that are authoritative. It could keep going based on the break up of the domains. You can see this in action if you like... I've got at least a dozen nameservers under my control... Network Solutions has access to none of them. If they were to request a propagation of a domain (aka a zone transfer) it would be denied by the nameserver as it would not recognize their servers as having rights to do so (nor do they need it for dns resolution to work). This is a common security measure. I (or my clients) make DNS zone updates all the time, and N.S. isn't involved... The only zone transfers that take place are

[U2] Detecting idle time in INPUT statement.
Hello all, We are running Universe 10.1 on AIX with about 500 users. We have a problem with users opening up a record which puts a lock on it and just letting it sit at the INPUT statement for a long time. Most of the locking within the application does not use the LOCKED clause so when a second person needs the locked record, their session waits. What is the best way to detect the user hasn't typed anything for a period of time, say 2 minutes? This needs to be simple as we have no desire to rewrite the application! IIRC, some other MV systems have a timeout on the INPUT but I can't find anything about this in the UV manual. Try "ls -li |grep inode#" in the directory where the file is likley to be or "ls -liR / |grep inode#" to look everythere. You may need root permissions to check some files. NO warranty! Re: [U2] Where can I get UniAdmin?
Tony, When I had to install U2 (Unidata stuff) after some years of not using on a Win7 machine (although it's not specifically related to Win7) I tried to install some stuff under the traditional C:\Program Files (x86) instead of the default c:\u2 and ran into the same issues Tony did. In this day and age U2 needs start to understand "spaces" in paths, etc. and Windows standards. I hate having to specify rogue program files outside the windows standard location for such data (i.e. C:\Program Files [x86]\ in my backup plan. I'm providing notes about XAdmin since we're here. Bottom line, it's working fine. I installed the DBTools but originally put them under: C:\Program Files\Rocket Software\U2\U2Tools The first startup failed, saying I should look for a log under U2Tools\v3. That log wasn't there. I suspect a W7 permissions issue and figured this is why the installer wanted to install under the c:\U2 directory in the first place. But after so many years isn't it clear yet that products should be installed under Program Files, not root, and that should be written to %AppData% (different for W7/XP, etc)? I uninstalled but the Program Files tree remained. Apparently the uninstall doesn't remove the JRE6 that it installed. OK, that's another issue. First, why not mandate the JRE get installed into a common location first? Second, if you're going to install software, uninstall it too. I put my second installation under C:\Databases\U2\U2Tools, since I have all of my databases in that tree as well. On startup I did get the XAdmin. Yay. I created a Server reference and attempted to Connect, got error 39202. Recognized this as an RPC error and ... oops, I had shutdown Universe. Start services, got connect. Yay. On first connect got message that the Server programs are out-of-date with option to update XTOOLSUB to v3.100.0. Click OK. Wait. Nothing. Is something happening? Guess not. Move on. Open Tasks/Network Services to change telnet/ssh ports (avoid conflicts with other MV products). Change my Universe service to use the new telnet port for debugging. Now set Windows Firewall to allow the new ports. Connect in from outside. Yay! I hope that helps someone (whether U2Tools developers or fellow users). David W. and others, I also have a perl script that will parse a Excel worksheet from a workbook (Excel 97-2003) if anyone is interested. It returns back a Variable in SheetData automatically converts dates/times from the excel number to the pick date time number. I haven't look at in years, because it was solid as a rock. =). Re: [U2] Building an Excel File
Amen Tony. I don't know how many times I get a call from a user saying for "some" reason my XLS/XLSX parser doesn't work with the "Excel" file they have. What the user really has is a CSV/TSV file with a XLS file extension that some programmer decided to name the file. This is because EXCEL doesn't bring up the CSV/TSV layout when the file has a .xls extension. However, my engine expects a true binary xls or x-zip xlsx envelope when the file has the xls/xlsx extension. Now the engine reads the first 20-50 bytes to determine if it's really an Excel file before attempting to parse it. It's NOT only U2/Pick programmers who do this little "trick" on the users. I have well known insurance company that does this, and it annoys the hell out of me. I've created excel files with PERL and the spreadsheet::write module when I worked on a HPUX/UD server and windows server for the past 12 years. -Original Message- From: u2-users-boun...@listserver.u2ug.org [mailto:u2-users-boun...@listserver.u2ug.org] On Behalf Of Tony Gravagno Sent: Monday, February 06, 2012 10:06 PM To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: Re: [U2] Building an Excel File Not responding to any particular quote here, just the CSV topic in general. Respected colleagues, CSV is not Excel. If you have an end-user that asks for Excel and you give them a CSV you're just perpetuating the myth that Pick is a dinosaur. They will gladly spend tens of thousands of dollars to replace your application with something that creates real Excel (and PDF) despite the fact that such things can be attained at low cost or no cost right now. Trust me, I've seen it happen. This dove-tails with the reasons why people get 20 people to support Oracle when they can have 3 working on Pick. The reason is that the Oracle people say "yes", and give them pretty reports, when their Pick guys say "no", and give them plain text in columns and rows and call it "Excel". Please don't let that happen to you. Be sure you are properly responding to end-user requests. Just ask them what they do with the documents after you generate them. If they really just want raw data, OK. But if they go on to tell you how many days it takes to reformat the data, assemble the multiple CSVs into a single workbook, etc, then you have found a great deal of room for improvement. Yeah, I've been there too. Off the soapbox, thanks. Re: [U2] Opinions on Cache
First I like to thank all that have responded to my query. I knew that posting a question that may lead me to dropping U2 as a database may cause some concern as to whether that is appropriate for this list. I believe it is, because I want the opinions of people who have experience/exposure in both U2 and Cache. There was a bit of confusion about U2 and SB. If I decide to go with Cache, I would abandon the SB platform for GUI UI. I was interested if there was any conversion utilities between SB and .NET forms. Specifically if Cache has .NET DLLs/providers for connectivity and databinding in .Net controls, etc. I haven't looked at SB/XA yet, which I believe is the XAML (WPF) replacement for SB. [U2] Opinions on Cache
Group, I want to ask if anyone has had any experience with Cache and also has experience with U2 and SQL. I have been out of the MV (U2) since then of 2008, currently .NET (C#) and MSSQL. I have a large MV application written in SB and Unidata that I would like to re-develop. The basic roundup: Entity Files - Employees (1M+ records) - Customers (1M+ records) Transactons: - Payroll/Timecard/Invocing related files (10M+ records each file). Binary Files: - Photos, Documents (resumes, HR Forms) (2-3M records) This will be a small/midsize enterprise application that will have both desktop, web, and mobile modules. Areas of interest: - Speed (I know this is difficult without hardware/etc). - File / Program Architecture - Development Language/Environment - Change Management (SDLC) - Deployment I just looking for an over feel and professional opinions as compared to other platforms. The biggest issues I have with SQL is the shear about of tables and their inflexibility with max sizes and such. The toughest question I hate to answer what is: The maximum size for column/field "Last Name/Surname", Answer: How the hell do I know! Thank you in advance for any and all opinions related to Cache, online or offline. P.S. I have been on this list for at least a decade, please don't hold that against me. =) Don Verhagen Emjack Group, LLC. [U2] [UV] PORT.STATUS questions.
Hello all, We are running Universe 11.1.17 on Aix 5.3. I use PORT.STATUS for several function within programs by capturing the output and parsing it. I have a couple of problems with this. First, only one user at a time can run the command and this causes random failure of the programs. Second, the output can vary depending on options and success or failure of the command. So, is there a callable routine to get the same info in a cleaner way? I need things like "is port ### logged in" or a list of ports logged in with a specific login id, etc. In others words, the same info but in a more usable format. Also, PORT.STATUS from within Universe gives an error for options like PID and FILEMAP but works ok from the AIX prompt, why? Re: [U2] ViaDuct problem
Harold, I see that Peter replied and he is the Accuterm guru so I'll give you a user's perspective. The GUI designer was easier for me to learn than Visual Studio and mv.net. The GUI designer creates the MV Basic code to display the form and stub sections for each control (prompt) and event. You then need to send data to the form and get data from it. It supports grids and tabbed windows. The form is controlled from the MV Basic program so you don't need to know Windows basic. Since the round trip from the form to Basic and back takes a finite amount of time, if you do it wrong, it gets a little slow. As with any tool, it takes a few wrong turns to get it right. I have never used Viaduct so I don't have any idea if the Accuterm subroutines are similar. Contact me off list if you want. Triggering DOS and typing in the batch command manually - fails Placing the batch file in a variable and using EXECUTE to trigger it - fails This is really weird -Original Message- From: u2-users-boun...@listserver.u2ug.org [mailto:u2-users-boun...@listserver.u2ug.org] On Behalf Of Richard Lewis Sent: Tuesday, November 02, 2010 3:57 PM To: U2 Users List Subject: Re: [U2] UniVerse DOS Command - Batch File Error Is the path set correctly, so that the application can be seen from the cmd or EXECUTEd environment? Re: [U2] how to round to 2 decimals?
How about this? X = 2596 * 8.333 ;* [X will contain 21632.468] ANS = INT((X * 100) + .5) / 100 PRINT ANS The (X * 100) changes X to 2163246.8 The + .5 changes X to 2163247.3 The INT() changes X to 2163247 The / 100 changes X to 21632.47 The output will displays 21632.47 Using a FOR NEXT loop, I run INT((21632.468 * 100) + .5) / 100 and the OCONV(21632.468,'MR20') versions one million times and got .84 seconds for the INT version and 4.9 seconds for the OCONV version. I doubt that 4 seconds would make a difference to most programs but every little helps. I also run the OCONV(ICONV(21632.468,'MD2'),'MD2') version and it took 5.1 seconds. Good news, I sent a support ticket into Vertex about the "missing" Geocoder functionality in the EI XML interface and was told that it will be in Release 2.9.8 due to be released around September 2010. This means the entire Vertex logic will be able to use request/response XML model that the tax calculation currently uses. (sidenote to those who are wondering "what is Vertex") Vertex is a (payroll) tax calculation engine that is updated monthly with changes in the US/Canadian payroll tax tables for Federal, State, Local, County, and School District taxes). I haven't created a "tax" table in over 15 years with the help of Vertex. This isn't an ad, just an endorsement. DW, Yes, I currently use the Vertex EI interface with the .NET application I'm working on. So do you know just link directly (add voc entry) with the vptrei.dll (enhanced integration) directly in Unidata? And yes, the XML is pretty sweet. Robert, Thanks for the heads-up about regasm. [U2] Unidata 7.1.9 and .Net DLL
Does anyone know if you can hook/link a .NET dll (Managed code) into Unidata 7.1.9 (Windows). I know you can with COM .DLL by creating an "E" type voc entry. Sample COM DLL Voc entry <1> E <2> E:\Vertex\VertexUtils\VertexDriver.DLL <3> v_LocConnect <4> POINTER <5> CHAR_PTR <6> CHAR_PTR <7> CHAR_PTR <8> CHAR_PTR <9> INT I was hoping to update the VertexDriver.DLL (Currently COM/_cdecl) to a .Net dll. I really hate writing c code. David Wolverton, you out there? I know you have some experience writing c -> Vertex utils. I may just end up writing a webservice to handle this and have Unidata call the webservice. Just want to check before I start writing this. Thanks for any assistance. Re: [U2] Printing images
Harold, If you or someone else can pay for it, Print Wizard will do the job plus a lot more. If this isn't an option, then a couple of observations about the code the other person give you. I have been working to get a full page overlay to print. To create the overlay image, I setup a printer in Windows using an HP PCL-5 generic driver and printed the pdf form to a file. Do not use a pcl-6 driver as it's output is very different. As HTH said, the resulting file needs the trailing reset (ESCAPE E) and other stuff removed. A hex editor works best for this. To read the image into Universe, use READBLK instead of READSEQ, just use a big number for the ending byte position. It will ignore line feeds, attribute marks, etc. One PRINT statement will print the whole form/logo. Also, I had to use cursor positioning commands to set the starting position for the data following the printing of the overlay. Without these, I was getting the form on one page and the data on the next. You may contact me directly if you want. donr_work at yahoo.com Don From: "iggch...@comcast.net" To: U2 Users List Sent: Mon, May 10, 2010 3:20:46 PM Subject: Re: [U2] Printing images A long time ago, someone shared a way of doing this. Example program: * open and read data to be transfered into ITEM variable. MODE = 'S,K' ;* Send from server to PC using Kermit protocol. FNAME = 'XYZ' ;* Filename on PC. PATH = 'c:\transfer\' ;* aka Windows folder. STAT = '' ;* Will be set if error occurs. The following will start the WORDPAD program and display the file. I would hate to have to remember that INDEX_1 is say, Customer Name, verus a dictionary named CUST_NAME. I would agree with others, I rarely had any need to rebuild any indexes with Unidata, other than part of a file resizing/space considerations. Re: [U2] Simple Export to Excel
Group (I didn't see who the OP was), I have a perl script/unidata program which will do XLS (Excel 2003 and before). It requires that perl be installed and a few *excel.ppms* freely available. The black box unidata driver program handles column heading, formatting, justification, sorting, subtotaling and grouping. I'm working through the OpenXML formats for Office, I've conquered Word 2007 and moving onto Excel 2007 (openxml) next. I will update the group when I finish. If anyone wants the perl/excel2003 scripts and unidata programs let me know. G, Advice at this stage would be not to replicate as there appears to be a bug in SBClient, i.e. once you get the issue happening there's no way to reverse it that I know of. 1. Double click an SB+ item to bring up the oonnect screen, the one with the telephone, computers, satelite et al images. 2. From the top window menu select "File". 3. From the drop down menu select "Print Options". 4. Tick "Use Windows Print Drivers" 5. Click the "OK" button. Note even after leaving and returning to the "Print Options" window the "Use Windows Print Drivers" appears unclicked, that's a bug. 6. Connect to an SB+ session, selecting GUI mode. 7. Once in SB+ select a menu to go one down from the first menu you see. 8. You should now be seeing an icon bar below the top drop down menu, think this may have to be setup. 9. Click on the printer icon to do a page dump and it no longer goes direct to the printer. We have managed to reproduce on three machines but no one can work out how to fix it. Thinking if we canned the whole SB+ thing and went with a web interface this would be a whole bunch easier in the long run. Of course the goal here, according to management, is to migrate to Oracle so that's probably a moot point :( Cheers, Jeff -Original Message- From: owner-u2-us...@listserver.u2ug.org [mailto:owner-u2-us...@listserver.u2ug.org] On Behalf Of apogee79 Sent: Thursday, 7 May 2009 1:47 PM To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: Re: [U2] Another probably simple SB+ issue. "PICK / U2 Hits"? Any "ERP Light" applications out there? Hello folks, A good number of years ago, there used to be a published list / document / book of various PICK / U2 "Solutions Providers" or Value Added Resellers and ISV (aka Independent Software Vendors) listing the VAR or ISV, their vertical markets served, and descriptions of the applications they provided, (I think it was called "PICK HITS" or something like that?). Is there anything similar produced/published these days? It would appear that such a document would be an excellent vehicle for the continued proliferation of the "multi-valued" market. (IBM U2 Marketing - where are you?) I too am out of work, but in discussions with a small local MFG type operation about an IT Manager opportunity. One of the main aspects they're looking for in this IT Manager position is someone to find, and implement an "ERP Light" application. It should be noted these folks have previously attempted a Epicor solution that they were "sold" that when it came time to implement, they "discovered" that this Epicor product did not do what this company needed at all. This company was "promised what they wanted it to do could be done", but then learned well AFTER shelling out big $$, (after expected delivery time of the mod's), that what they wanted was not currently possible, but could be attained with 10X the previously shelled out "big $$" and a "couple of years" of development time from the Epicor "development team". Needless to say, that implementation fell flat on its face, and now they're out looking again. Looking for something that does Sales Orders and Sales History, Inventory Control, AP / AR Financials and maybe a few other basic MFG type related applications. Surprisingly, these folks are not using any pre-existing package, but using a lot of home grown type spread sheet based improvised solutions. Ideas? Suggestions? [U2] UV to SAP migration disaster
Hello all, This is an interesting subject. I remember reading several years ago that TI (Texas Instruments) spent $50 million on SAP and gave up. SAP must be a bear to implement but TI should have known better. I have personal knowledge of several migrations/conversions that didn't go so well. All of them suffered due to under estimating the amount of work involved. Of course, a lot of the work was due to the sloppiness of the old code, multiple and obsolete programs, program bugs, etc. But the primary cause of the under estimate was the eagerness of the sales person(s) to get the deal and not listen to the programmers. An Universe to jBASE migration project was abandoned after many months for several reasons. An Ultimate to Universe migration is alive and running but took several times as long as "estimated". A GUI frontend addition to a UV system took a lot longer than the customer "thought it should" due to scope creep and a lack of planning and control. An Unidate to SQL migration is in production but still doesn't do all the things the Unidata system did. A Reality to Oracle migration dragged on for 5 years and then the company was bought out by a company using SAP so they switched to SAP. They are still in business so I guess that it's working for them. In another case, the programmer has built a very well organized and functional system but the PHB's are switching to something else. I don't know why but I bet it's not due to a favorable ROI. Why does MV lose out to the SAP's of the world? Marketing! Even IBM does a poor job of promoting U2 and they have the money to do so. The others in general have very little marketing money compared to Oracle and Microsoft. Other factors include too many vendors, each with a share of a rather small pie. Even when systems are brought together like Unidata and Universe or Mvbase and D3, the vendors choose to maintain separate versions. As long as there are so many versions, one of them will never have the resources to have effective marketing. Of course, there are a lot of other factors. Perhaps a bigger push into the open source space would help. I recently read that MySQL has a long history of bugs, like losing all your data, and some of them will not be fixed. Yet it remains the most popular free database. We have a better mouse trap, why doesn't the world know it? Just, my 2 cents worth. BTW, I'm looking for programming work! Universe, Unidata, jBASE, etc. Linux, Aix, Windows, Mac. Understanding the database/languages, SQL and Csharp, are just a "how-to" problem which I've got a pretty decent grasp of. [U2] Leaving U2 World to the Dark Side (SQL)
To those that know me on this group. I have been using the Unidata databases since 1998 when introduced to it by my former CIO. Over the years and throughout my IT career, it has served me well. Decreasing software production and maintenance costs, while at the same time increasing the value of the software I (we) developed to solve complex business solutions. I have accepted an Application Development management position with a company here in the Philadelphia area. However, they are not a U2 shop. I view this opportunity as a chance to build my skills in and around the .NET platform and evaluate the use MSSQL in a true business application that I myself have built on a U2 platform in a previous time. While this doesn't exclusively rule out U2 in the future, for now, I'll be in SQL-land. Just wanted give a heads up to those that know me here. RE: [U2] Green Software -> Green Business
Susan, While the below changes may result in "green" results I tend to believe the main motivation behind most of the changes were monetary not environmental. Every "green" change has monetary benefit to the business owner. 1) Software and Documentation - No CD production costs / No Reams of Paper 2) Don't commute / Employees don't commute -- No office building rent/lease, a/c, water, etc. 3) Travel -- Obvious, however, it may be like me and I like to keep me shoes on in public. =) I think the question is what really motivated the change. Money (and convenience) or "green"? Would you make a "green" change if it *cost you more* money than not going "green". And as a side note, I hate green, the movement, the color. Can't we go blue? Re: [U2] Multiple columns from a LIST statement?
Edward, Take a look at the LIST-LABEL command. I don't have an Unidata system handy so I did this in jBASE. jsh ~ -->LIST-LABEL MD Cols,Rows,Skip,Indent,Size,Spaces{,C} :4,1,0,0,15,2 PAGE 110:10:02 16 JUL 2008 ENTER.FLDSPLYWIN.FTTOASC BLOCK-TERM NSELECT LOADT AUX.PGM SELECT-INDEX PIX.GUI.FORM.F TERM ECOPYPIX.GUI.CONTROL F/REALLOC L/UPDENTER.VAL WIN.DDE MEMO.ENTRY WIN.TWUSESET-STACKCUSTOM.OPTIONS WO.OPTIONS CREATE-FILE S/AMCLFQ*0LOGOFF . . . The LIST-LABEL command allows sorting, selecting, etc. Good luck, Don Robinson Ashwood Computer Co. 513-563-2800 - Original Message From: Edward Brown <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Sent: Wednesday, July 16, 2008 7:34:32 AM Subject: [U2] Multiple columns from a LIST statement? Hello, This is a unidata (7.1) reporting question, and I'm asking because although I can't find the answer in the documentation, I do think I've seen it once on another developer's screen. Suppose I list a file with a command like LIST ACCOUNTS. I'd get a list of the IDs down the left hand side of the page but a lot of wasted space elsewhere - and a maximum of 22 / 60ish records per screen / A4 page. So what I'm wondering is if there's a way to have the report make use of multiple columns, using the horizontal space available before jumping to the next page? RE: [U2] Extra Form Feed from .prn File Followed by Text
We're assuming that there must be some sort of form-feed character (or other sequence that the printer is using to generate a form-feed) but have not actually checked all of the info due to the size of the prn files. We were able to eliminate the form-feed by stripping every occurrence of CHAR(12), but that distorted some of the text box and bitmap output on the form. As is usually done, after converting the prn file to hex, we stripped all the 1B45, 1B252D313233..., 1B266C... printer reset, orientation and paper source sequences, but we must be missing something... -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Bob Rasmussen Sent: Friday, July 11, 2008 10:06 AM To: u2-users@listserver.u2ug.org Subject: Re: [U2] Extra Form Feed from .prn File Followed by Text On Thu, 10 Jul 2008, Don P. [U2] Extra Form Feed from .prn File Followed by Text
Help! Im trying to print a form created from Word combined with text. This method has always worked when creating prn files using a PCL5/5e driver, removing the standard escape sequences that trigger form feeds, and then sending the trimmed file in RAW format to an HP printer running either PCL5 or 6. Its worked fine until now. A new customer has Windows Server 2003 x64, an HP P1505n Laser Jet and the prn files were created with XP Pro drivers. Now every time we attempt to print, the form comes out on one page and the text on the next page. If we build the prn files for an older HP model (say Laser Jet 1300 PCL5e) we get a single page, but the text and portions of the form are garbled. Ive contacted HP and their suggestion was to use Laser Jet 6L drivers. The print jobs still generated the extra form feed. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Re: [U2] [UD] CALL @progname
On the bright side, anything is more "efficent" than the program "blowing up". I hear what you're saying about efficency, however, sometimes it's better to be safe than sorry (ie less effiecent). I had to do this in a time import program in which each type of time clock had it's custom-definable parsing program. In this day and age, 2 extra reads are going to cost less than the possible hit to the reputation/reliability of the program. Yes, programs have reputations...heh. My 2 cents.
