My 2 Cents: I love a GUI editor, but I've been using Pick/U2 since '82 and
grew up with ED. It's still a very fast, very effective way to check
records and make quick changes.

Doug,

I totally disagree! Yes, once you get used to a GUI editor, ED/AE can be
tough, but it has it's merits too.

One, it's quick - it's ALWAYS available.

Would you honestly invoke a GUI editor to make a quick change to a VOC
entry?

It's a tool of the trade - it needs to be a required learn

Regardless of the toolset, the first hurdle would be to normalise your database
to look like a relational one. Which is likely to be the greatest hurdle. Data
dictionaries in U2/PICK are optional are a purely for reporting purposes - they
can have duplicates and these can be conflicting. Even worse (as if you thought
it could be) - data dictionaries can be incomplete or wrong. This added to the
lack of enforcement of data integrity and constraints usually causes these
toolsets to fail (indeed, even the UV/ODBC driver fails too!)... so good luck!

Rocket released U2 Metadata Manager to assist in this respect and is designed
to
allow forward and backwards capability. Although, support for this in UV is
limited to the latest official release... so your alternative is UV/ODBC...

For UV/ODBC users - I have always recommended a separate UV account and data
dictionary that is spotless. For some this is the best option - why go against
the flow - when you create your own stream...

Re: [U2] SORT reports line length, change right margin?

2013-07-15 Thread Don Robinson
Randy,

SETPTR can be used to set the line length/page width.

SETPTR ,145,NODEFAULT,BRIEF

Should set it to 145 characters. NODEFAULT says do not changes anything else
and BRIEF suppresses the OK to set prompt.

At the end you could/should reset it to 132.

Of course, in a proc, put an H before SETPTR and a P on the next line.

Good luck,

Bear in mind SORT and LIST are pretty much the same thing ...

I needed to add new fields, but the size of the line is too small. I'm
already using landscape mode and don't have enough space.

I have been testing with PCL, but I was wondering if I could just make the
line longer. Seems to be enough room if I could adjust the right margin.

Could you shrink any field widths? Are there any text fields which often
have wasted space? You can use the FORMAT or FMT (not sure which)
modifier to adjust the field width just for that report rather than
messing around cluttering up the dictionary.

MARGIN /n/ only changes the left margin.

What margins have been set in SETPTR? I can't remember whether the
default is 0 or 3 (both left and right).

I never had to deal much with SORT reports in the past, so I though you
 Guru's could help.

DICT AP F1        invoice value (A type or I type)

70% of North America’s largest independent insurance agencies
80% of automobile dealerships in North America
55% of Fortune 100 companies

Ok... since this topic is so OT anyway.

I have an OLD portable Tektronix oscilloscope that's not working right if
anyone's interested. I can pull it down and check the model # if anyone's
interested. It's been on the shelf for a LONG TIME. Something wasn't working on
the screen. I don't remember if it was horizontal or vertical, or off to the
side or what. I remember thinking that I'd fix it someday, and never got around
to it... I'm sure the battery is probably shot by now. I think there's a couple
probes in the bag too.

If anyone is interested, pay for the shipping and it's yours. It might fit in a
medium flat rate box ($12.50), I know it will fit in a large (~$17). Of course,
these are domestic rates, if someone wants it over the pond, same offer - pay
for shipping, but it will probably be more than it's worth...

Re: [U2] UV full screen editor

2013-02-26 Thread Don Robinson
Nirvan,

I second AccuTerm WED.

In addition to WED, I have created a couple of other commands using AccuTerm to
run Windows programs.

One of these is a compare program that opens 2 programs (items) in Winmerge.
Winmerge is a windows compare/merge program that is very useful for locating
changes in text files. It allows copying of data from either item to the other
and when I exit it, I have a prompt to update the original items. Thus it does
both a compare and edit. Winmerge knows nothing about MV so not so useful on
multivalues.

The second one opens a program (item) in windows grep which displays lines
containing a search string.

I have samba setup so I can use Winmerge, windows grep or any windows editor
directly from Windows. I use Ultraedit which has a very useful hex mode.

For data items containing multivalues and subvalues, AE is my choice.

HTH.

Probably the simplest, and easiest to use, would be AccuTerm
http://www.asent.com.  It is a terminal emulator, probably the best in the MV
market, that includes an editor.  You can call the editor while within the UV
environment (that is, logged into an account) straight from the command line.
So, instead of...

:ED SOMEFILE ItemId

...you would change the ED verb with WED, like...

:WED SOMEFILE ItemId

This solution is probably best if you spend most of your time inside the UV
environment and aren't interested in installing software other than a telnet
client.  In addition, it is probably the cheapest of all telnet clients you can
use, assuming you place any value on your time.  :-)

Tyler,

Try using CT instead of LIST-ITEM.

CT will display every line in the record including blank ones.

The LIST-ITEM command skips blank lines and something may be causing it to skip

CT and LIST-ITEM don't use the dictionary so that's not the problem.

Also, you can look at the record with ED or AE editors.

[U2] How to create an entry in the Universe errlog file?

An example would be if an invalid or blank print Q is used in SETPTR.
SETPTR doesn't check for a valid print queue but I can by reading the DEVICE
file and displaying a message to the user.

The problem is this can occurs in processes that log to COMO or PH and looking
through a bunch of these is a pain.

If I could write directly to the errlog file it would be much easier.

2012-11-01 Thread Don Robinson
Tony,

As usual, you make some good points, however, I have a little different
viewpoint.
For the past 20 years I have worked for several mom and pop companies. These
companies have refused to provide training for their employees including me and
are very slow to adopt new developments in this business.

I get reasons like, for what I'm paying you, you should already know ever
thing, when so and so got back from training, they told me 'I know enough to
get started, but I'm no expert', so no more training. (I guess the boss thinks
a few days in class make you an expert!), I'll send you when we get a customer
to buy the xyz product and several more I can't remember at the moment.

Once, I was charged with supporting a customer with a new product and I was
allowed to attend the same 3 day FREE training as the customer!! The customer
had a couple of programmers that dug into it and within a couple of DAYS they
knew more about it than I did, but I was still supposed to act like I knew what
I was doing! Very frustrating.

Any kind of Pick related training is always somewhere else and when the
employer won't pay for you to go, what do you do?

I understand it costs a lot but not being properly trained costs too.

It seems a lot of employers want someone with specific experience instead of
looking at your potential and ambition.

Subject: Re: [U2] Another job ad written by people who have no clue

In the mainstream, it's generally understood that one must be in a
constant learning cycle, or skills get outdated in a matter of 6-18
months. So .NET people need to understand the difference between
WebForms and MVC, and adapt to generics, lambdas, and dynamic types.
Java people need to adjust to changes in frameworks, networking,
security, and XML parsing. PHP people need to understand competing
frameworks as well as balance their server-side skills with JavaScript
and related client frameworks. Any browser developer needs to shift
with browser changes, now HTML5, CSS3, etc. And some of us need to do
all of the above and then some.

But what changes in the Pick world? Not much. And how do a lot of Pick
people respond to that? By not feeling a need to do anything but
R83-compatible BASIC.

There are a lot  of jobs out there for developers of new UI's for
existing MV apps, but few people available who can satisfy the demand.
And yet Pick people have  had nearly two decades to improve their
skills. Every developer here should be qualified for the job
associated with this thread, because that ad looks pretty much like
any other ad in this industry these days.

I'm not trying to paint every Pickie as a dinosaur or a laggard - far
from it. I'm just saying there are too many people who still only know
BASIC while there have been any number of opportunities to move beyond
that. And there are any number of examples of people in the mainstream
who are in a constant mode of adaptation to prove that this is not
only possible but the established norm.

We are where we are in the Pick industry because Pick people generally
become complacent in the belief that they are already using the best
database in the world, so they don't need to learn anything else.
That's just wrong at so many levels. That cripples the industry,
making it more difficult for VARs to sell their software and for the
DBMS providers to continue investing in this niche market.

And let's face it, the additional problem that many here face is that
the developer base is now aging, and it's difficult to start from
scratch and jump on Mr Toad's Wild Technology Ride. We just can't do
that anymore - myself included. What this means is that many people
need to recognize their own limitations, and transition their approach
to finding employment and consulting gigs. Position as a manager
rather than as a programmer. Profile your skills as a problem solver
who can get qualified people to write code, rather than competing with
a million people who can write code but can't solve real world
business problems. Sell your understanding of business rules, because
this is an area where you excel compared to all of those people who
can write code but have no idea what to write.

Will

I don't understand what's wrong with indexing, can you clarify this point,
and I'll wipe out a fix in three days :)

Well for a start I didn't say there's anything wrong, I said it could be
improved - not the same thing!

But as to specifics, take the following scenario (UniVerse specific):

- Grab a transaction file for say, 10 million records.
- Assume a reasonable key length say 10 chars.
- Add a field with two states (open/closed, male/female, that kind of
thing).
- Index it, and watch what happens to the performance on that file.
- Better still, don't use an existing file! Create a new file and a program
to copy or build the content in basic and show a counter every 1000 records.
At the start it will be quick. After about 500,000 you can grab a beer in
between the counters.

The problem is, that a UniVerse index is very good at establishing the index
key: it has a nice B+tree format with a decent level of fan-out.

But when it comes to the list of primary keys being indexed against each
index key, that's really just treated as a block of data.

If you have a good ratio with a lot of index keys (date*type*something_else)
each of which gives a relatively short list of primary keys you can get very
good indexing performance. But it isn't very clever when you have a small
number of index keys to a large list of primary keys.

So every time you changed the flag value in the file above it would have to
load up the two lists (one for old value, one for new), locate and delete
from the old and locate/fail/append to the new, each list averaging 11 byte
* 5 million entries. And then write it back to a succession of oversize
blocks in the index file.

Now you might say -  well, you wouldn't index a transaction file like that.
And you would be right - because of the design of the index. But it's a
perfectly legitimate and reasonable thing to want to do.

How to better manage a large index list is, of course, the question. Since
it is a large list into which elements are potentially inserted/deleted in
order, the list itself could be made into a set of B+Tree pages over a
certain threshold, reducing the cost of location/insertion and
location/deletion. Other databases use techniques such as key deltas and
compression to alleviate this. And I'm sure there are better options if I
could be bothered to research them.

So there you go, Will. Your job for the weekend. Redesign the UniVerse
indexing so it works for large lists, and get Rocket to adopt it.

:)

A newbie stumped me:   Why are Q-Pointers  Q pointers ?

The Q lingo comes from the dawning days of Pick.
Why was the letter Q chosen?

    Attribute makes sense.
    Synonym makes sense.
PQ  for Prestored Query makes sense.  PR for Proc would have been better.

D3 User Guide just says,
Q-pointers are used in account master dictionaries to point to other
files.
UV User Ref says,
Q-pointers are file definition synonyms that point to files in local and
remote UniVerse accounts.
Jonathon Sisk's Pick Pocket Guide doesn't help, either.
PI never had Q-pointers.  Clif, did Devcom consider it Questionable?

I posed the same question on  Pick Users GoogleGroup,  but I didn't get a
really satisfactory answer, yet.
I'll bet someone here on the U2-List  knows the true answer.

Guys,

I may be way off base but I have a program that takes basic code from the
command line, compiles and runs it.

For example:
 01 RUNBASIC CRT SYSTEM(2) ; CRT SYSTEM(3)

79
24

RUNBASIC is the program and CRT SYSTEM(2) ; CRT SYSTEM(3)
is the code in this example. 79 and 24 are the answers.

The string of = signs are just for looks.

This could be EXECUTEd from within a program but why?
It is quite handy for testing bits of code at TCL and might be useful in a proc.

RUNBASIC will do anything you can do with one line of code using ; to separate
statements including
FOR ... NEXT and LOOP ... REPEAT.

Code is free as long as you don't critisize it.

I have been trying to figure out how to redirect the www.u2ug.org to Brian's

are correct that Network Solutions does not host the domain record but
merely points to the appropriate domain named server (angelichost.net,

address, it's requires 2 named servers. I was thinking about have Network
Solutions redirect it, but that requires Network Solutions to host the DNS
and I didn't want to disrupt this list. I attempting to go through the
solutions one by one and was at a point of giving up =).

Now that I know all the players involved (Specifically, Larry) it seems that
he can redirect www.u2ug.org from angelichost.net server. I will file Mr.

This may be more about name resolution than you ever wanted to know, but
here goes anyway... (knowledge is always a good thing). Sorry for the long
post, domain name resolution is often misunderstood (kind of like people
referring to somename.com as a top level domain or TLD - it's not, it's a
2nd level domain. The TLD is com.)

The SOA nameservers in question are controlled by angelichost.net not
Network Solutions (unless NS has some connection to Angelic I'm unaware of
which is entirely possible). The only authoritative nameservers for the
domain are ns9 and ns10 on angelichost.net's network. Anything else would
have to be caching.

Name resolution is hierarchical and works from right to left... ORG,
U2UG.ORG, etc... The reason it works from anywhere is when you type it in
locally, it will go to the one of the 13 root nameservers, aka (letter
a-m).root-servers.net, (run by Verisign/Network Solutions and MANY others
including NASA, DOD, Cogent, etc.) if not in cache based on the TLD in this
case .ORG, it will then ask for the nameservers for the next level (U2UG.ORG
in this case). In this case it will get ns9/ns10.angelichost.net. Root
nameservers do not contain the zone records for the hosts themselves only
the nameservers that are authoritative. It could keep going based on the
break up of the domains.

You can see this in action if you like... Here's part of the query for
www.u2ug.org to a.root-servers.net:
Default server: a.root-servers.net
Address: 2001:503:ba3e::2:30#53
 set q=any
 www.u2ug.org
Server: a.root-servers.net
Address:198.41.0.4#53

Non-authoritative answer:

Authoritative answers can be found from:
org nameserver = a0.org.afilias-nst.info.
org nameserver = b0.org.afilias-nst.org.
(clipped)

Note how it says it cannot answer authoritatively, and points to the next
level...
Next I set the server to the 1st in the list from the root server
Default server: a0.org.afilias-nst.info
Address: 2001:500:e::1#53
 www.u2ug.org
Server: a0.org.afilias-nst.info

Authoritative answers can be found from:
u2ug.orgnameserver = ns9.angelichost.net.
u2ug.orgnameserver = ns10.angelichost.net.

Notice that the 1st time I messed up and hadn't set a q=any yet (query
any/all information) and it refused to give me any answer at all. After I
get the q=any, it simply pointed me up the change (or down if you like) to
the angelichost.net servers... From there I can get the host.

 server ns9.angelichost.net
Default server: ns9.angelichost.net
Address: 216.240.154.246#53
 set q=any
 www.u2ug.org
Server: ns9.angelichost.net
Address:216.240.154.246#53

Name: www.u2ug.org
Address: 216.240.154.254

Those are the only 2 servers that can answer authoritatively.

I've got at least a dozen nameservers under my control... Network Solutions
has access to none of them. If they were to request a propagation of a
domain (aka a zone transfer) it would be denied by the nameserver as it
would not recognize their servers as having rights to do so (nor do they
need it for dns resolution to work). This is a common security measure. I
(or my clients) make DNS zone updates all the time, and N.S. isn't
involved... The only zone transfers that take place are between the SOA
namservers (those listed as nameservers for the domain) the upper level DNS
servers only get involved when there's a change

where the nameservers are.
Network Solutions does offer DNS services, but the u2ug.org domain appears
to use angelichost.net

Plus a few hosts frown on

[U2] Detecting idle time in INPUT statement.

2012-03-27 Thread Don Robinson
Hello all,

We are running Universe 10.1 on AIX with about 500 users. We have a problem
with users opening up a record which puts a lock on it and just letting it sit
at the INPUT statement for a long time.

Most of the locking within the application does not use the LOCKED clause so
when a second person needs the locked record, their session waits.

What is the best way to detect the user hasn't typed anything for a period of
time, say 2 minutes? This needs to be simple as we have no desire to rewrite
the application!

IIRC, some other MV systems have a timeout on the INPUT but I can't find
anything about this in the UV manual.

Thanks,

Thanks to all who responded.

At the point in the programs where this is a problem for us, we know the user
has a lock, we just want to release the lock. This will be done where they
already have the option of aborting so no problem with partial updates, etc.

The only gotcha on this is if they type one character, the INPUTIF will wait
forever on the Enter key but this isn't too likely.

The following code does this pretty well.

STOP  ;* Do whatever you want here.
   END

Right, you don't care if they are at input exactly.
You care if they are squatting on a lock.

So your periodic lock checker thingie, has to be combined with a nasty

Don,

You should at least optimize the code by just checking a counter and not
messing with TIME().  Your NAP command automatically takes care of the
amount of time spent in each loop.  You just need to count how many NAPs it
takes to equal the amount of wait time you wish to have.

Thanks to all who responded.

At the point in the programs where this is a problem for us, we know the
user has a lock, we just want to release the lock. This will be done where
they already have the option of aborting so no problem with partial updates,
etc.

The only gotcha on this is if they type one character, the INPUTIF will wait
forever on the Enter key but this isn't too likely.

The following code does this pretty well.

* Don Robinson
* Testing the INPUTIF statement.
*
PROMPT ''

ZZ = ''
TIME.OUT.TIME = INT(TIME()) + 10  ;* Wait 10 seconds.

Right, you don't care if they are at input exactly.
You care if they are squatting on a lock.

So your periodic lock checker thingie, has to be combined with a nasty

Until the users are well edumacated.

As far as adding LOCKED clauses, that would only solve a part of it. The second

The goal is to reduce user aggravation and calls to the support group.

It does not matter if a system is old or not, you gotta keep it up to
ate.  Maintenance programming means adding LOCKED clauses that
hould have been there in the first place.  I doubt it would take more
han a few hours; probably less time than writing and debugging some
ff-the-wall input timer routine.  There probably aren't that many
ritical READU's.  On my system, for the number of programs I have in

Anyone have an easy way to do this?
In the past I've run a batch routine to just query each and every Universe file
for it's inode and device and build a table of these

Every week
Seems like a great amount of overkill to me.
You could also mod the CREATE-FILE command to sniff it and make an xref entry
but

Any suggestions?
This is NOT for the case where you know the file and want to find the inode and
device
It's for the case where you know the inode and device (only) and want to find
the file.

Re: [U2] Where can I get UniAdmin?

2012-03-02 Thread Don
Tony,

When I had to install U2 (Unidata stuff) after some years of not using on a
Win7 machine (although it's not specifically related to Win7) I tried to
install some stuff under the traditional C:\Program Files (x86) instead of
the default c:\u2 and ran into the same issues Tony did. In this day and
age U2 needs start to understand spaces in paths, etc. and Windows
standards. I hate having to specify rogue program files outside the windows
standard location for such data (i.e. C:\Program Files [x86]\ in my backup
plan. [end rant].

I'm providing notes about XAdmin since we're here. Bottom line, it's
working fine.

I installed the DBTools but originally put them under:
C:\Program Files\Rocket Software\U2\U2Tools
The first startup failed, saying I should look for a log under
U2Tools\v3.
That log wasn't there. I suspect a W7 permissions issue and figured
this is why the installer wanted to install under the c:\U2 directory
in the first place. But after so many years isn't it clear yet that
products should be installed under Program Files, not root, and that
should be written to %AppData% (different for W7/XP, etc)?

I uninstalled but the Program Files tree remained. Apparently the
uninstall doesn't remove the JRE6 that it installed. OK, that's
another issue. First, why not mandate the JRE get installed into a
common location first? Second, if you're going to install software,
uninstall it too.

I put my second installation under C:\Databases\U2\U2Tools, since I
have all of my databases in that tree as well. On startup I did get
the XAdmin. Yay.

I created a Server reference and attempted to Connect, got error
39202. Recognized this as an RPC error and ... oops, I had shutdown
Universe. Start services, got connect. Yay.

On first connect got message that the Server programs are out-of-date
with option to update XTOOLSUB to v3.100.0.
Click OK. Wait. Nothing. Is something happening? Guess not. Move on.

Open Tasks/Network Services to change telnet/ssh ports (avoid
conflicts with other MV products). Change my Universe service to use
the new telnet port for debugging. Now set Windows Firewall to allow
the new ports. Connect in from outside. Yay!

I hope that helps someone (whether U2Tools developers or fellow
users).

too much).

Yes, all spreadsheet clients including Excel will open a CSV file.

But that led to my assertion that CSV is not Excel and that CSV is not

About your statements - I'm intimately familiar with internals of Excel
(Office in general), XML, CSV, and related document standards, and I have no
idea what kind of middleware you're talking about below. CSV has no
information about formatting, it's pure data. It's therefore impossible for
any utility to do anything but autosize the columns, and that's trivial. As
I said above, if all you're doing is opening the file, sure, that should
work, but the result is hardly Excel outside of being text in columns and
rows.

You can't just simply 'change the Excel files into csv files'.
Your statement doesn't survive the first attempt. Excel will warn you that
it's going to lose detail if you do that. Again, CSV is not Excel. It
doesn't provide borders, colors, images, cell references, merged cells,

custom col/row sizes, or data typing. And while you can provide formulas in
CSV, you'll lose them if you save Excel as CSV.

Re: [U2] Building an Excel File

2012-02-07 Thread Don
Amen Tony.

I don't know how many times I get a call from a user saying for some
reason my XLS/XLSX parser doesn't work with the Excel file they have. What
the user really has is a CSV/TSV file with a XLS file extension that some
programmer decided to name the file. This is because EXCEL doesn't bring up
the CSV/TSV layout when the file has a .xls extension. However, my engine
expects a true binary xls or x-zip xlsx envelope when the file has the
xls/xlsx extension. Now the engine reads the first 20-50 bytes to determine
if it's really an Excel file before attempting to parse it.

It's NOT only U2/Pick programmers who do this little trick on the users. I
have well known insurance company that does this, and it annoys the hell out
of me.

I've created excel files with PERL and the spreadsheet::write module when I
worked on a HPUX/UD server and windows server for the past 12 years.

with something that creates real Excel (and PDF) despite the fact
that such things can be attained at low cost or no cost right
now. Trust me, I've seen it happen.

This dove-tails with the reasons why people get 20 people to
support Oracle when they can have 3 working on Pick. The reason
is that the Oracle people say yes, and give them pretty
reports, when their Pick guys say no, and give them plain text
in columns and rows and call it Excel.

Please don't let that happen to you. Be sure you are properly
responding to end-user requests. Just ask them what they do with
the documents after you generate them. If they really just want
raw data, OK. But if they go on to tell you how many days it
takes to reformat the data, assemble the multiple CSVs into a
single workbook, etc, then you have found a great deal of room
for improvement. Yeah, I've been there too.

Off the soapbox, thanks.

Re: [U2] UD Win 7.2 / Line Number with warning messages

2012-01-10 Thread Don
Wally,

Thanks, HUSHBASIC OFF was the key.

I put it in my LOGIN paragraph that calls a basic program that executes
UDTEXECUTE HUSHBASIC OFF since I didn't see a UDT.OPTION to set to
override SBXA setting of this.

 Excerpt for sbxa_getting_started.pdf
The following UniData environment options are set as part of the SB/XA
Application Server logon procedure:
- BASICTYPE 'P' - Sets the current BASICTYPE to be Pick-compatible.
- HUSHBASIC ON - Suppresses UniBasic error messages, leaving only UniQuery
error messages to display for UniQuery statements that execute from a
UniBasic program.

I'm not sure why this only seems to affect window versions of SB.

Thanks again for the clue,
Don Verhagen

You can't use the Column alias directly in a where cause, you need to put in
a derived dataset (table)

i.e.

SELECT *
FROM
(
SELECT
 substring(colname ,charindex('|',colname)+1, charindex('|',colname,
 charindex('|',colname)+1) - charindex('|',colname) -1) as PID
FROM SomeTable
) as DerivedTable
WHERE DerivedTable.PID = something

DC is limited to approx. 132 characters. I believe that wIntegrate (when in

While I have almost concluded that this app needs to be re-written in GUI...

Is there a way to do this in DC or wIntegrate?

I've worked on a couple of conversion between MV systems and there are a lot of

I just inherited a D3 system and it's awful switching between it and Universe

Re: [U2] Opinions on Cache

2011-04-12 Thread Don Verhagen
First I like to thank all that have responded to my query. I knew that
posting a question that may lead me to dropping U2 as a database may cause
some concern as to whether that is appropriate for this list.

I believe it is, because I want the opinions of people who have
experience/exposure in both U2 and Cache. There was a bit of confusion about
U2 and SB. If I decide to go with Cache, I would abandon the SB platform for
GUI UI. I was interested if there was any conversion utilities between SB
and .NET forms. Specifically if Cache has .NET DLLs/providers for
connectivity and databinding in .Net controls, etc.

I haven't looked at SB/XA yet, which I believe is the XAML (WPF) replacement
for SB. The candidate application is approx 15 years old (last used 3 years
ago) and is due for a major rewrite/overhaul. I have used WebDE (Redback) in
the past and was satisfied with it as middleware.

After the comments from this forum, I am going to request an evaluation
version from Intersystems.

Again, I just wanted to thank all for their comments, both online and
offline.

Thanks,

[U2] Opinions on Cache

2011-04-09 Thread Don Verhagen
Group,

I want to ask if anyone has had any experience with Cache and also has
experience with U2 and SQL. I have been out of the MV (U2) since then of
2008, currently .NET (C#) and MSSQL. I have a large MV application written
in SB and Unidata that I would like to re-develop.

The basic roundup:
Entity Files
- Employees (1M+ records)
- Customers (1M+ records)

Transactons:
- Payroll/Timecard/Invocing related files (10M+ records each file).

Binary Files:
- Photos, Documents (resumes, HR Forms) (2-3M records)

This will be a small/midsize enterprise application that will have both
desktop, web, and mobile modules.

Areas of interest:
- Speed (I know this is difficult without hardware/etc).
- File / Program Architecture
- Development Language/Environment
- Change Management (SDLC)
- Deployment

I just looking for an over feel and professional opinions as compared to
other platforms. The biggest issues I have with SQL is the shear about of
tables and their inflexibility with max sizes and such. The toughest
question I hate to answer what is: The maximum size for column/field Last
Name/Surname, Answer: How the hell do I know!

Thank you in advance for any and all opinions related to Cache, online or
offline.

P.S. I have been on this list for at least a decade, please don't hold that
against me. =)

My favorite is Perforce. It' not open source but a two user,
five workspace version is free. I use one workspace on development and one on

It is not MV aware but I've used it with Unidata, Universe and jBASE.

It has command line and GUI interfaces for Windows, Linux and several others.

Hi group,

You can use uv provided subroutine !GET.USERS; search the uvdoc.

If you use in basic EXECUTE PORT.STATUS INTERNAL CAPTURING VAR you get the
port.status output in a dynamic array VAR ; @am,@vm

You can also use in basic  VAR=SYSTEM(1301) which return a dynamic Array,
each attribute has 4 values: v1: Userno, v2:effective user name, v3: pid, v4:
login type similar to what PORT.STATUS would show.

Undocumented, but used by APP.PROGS GET.USERS.B

No specials ; on uv.

I hope this help.

 Objet : [U2] [UV] PORT.STATUS questions.

 Hello all,

We are running Universe 11.1.17 on Aix 5.3.

I use PORT.STATUS for several function within programs by capturing the
output and parsing it. I have a couple of problems with this.

First, only one user at a time can run the command and this causes random
 failure of the programs.
Second, the output can vary depending on options and success or failure of
 the command.

So, is there a callable routine to get the same info in a cleaner way?

I need things like is port ### logged in or a list of ports logged in with a
specific login id, etc. In others words, the same info but in a more usable
 format.

Also, PORT.STATUS from within Universe gives an error for options like PID
and FILEMAP but works ok from the AIX prompt, why?

 Thanks in advance, Don Robinson

The SYSTEM(1301) is really SYSTEM(1302) in GET.USERS.B. It only returns info
for
your login id not all users.

Your other suggestions may be useful, too.

Re: [U2] ViaDuct problem

2010-12-27 Thread Don Robinson
Harold,

I see that Peter replied and he is the Accuterm guru so I'll give you a user's
perspective.

The GUI designer was easier for me to learn than Visual Studio and mv.net. The
GUI designer creates the MV Basic code to display the form and stub sections
for
each control (prompt) and event. You then need to send data to the form and get
data from it. It supports grids and tabbed windows. The form is controlled from
the MV Basic program so you don't need to know Windows basic.

Since the round trip from the form to Basic and back takes a finite amount of
time, if you do it wrong, it gets a little slow. As with any tool, it takes
a few wrong turns to get it right.

I have never used Viaduct so I don't have any idea if the Accuterm subroutines
are similar.

Contact me off list if you want.

Good luck,

Wow - sorry to hear that.  Thanks for the info!
I've always considered AccuTerm the 'other' main player in the MV
terminal emulator market, and thought about going to them but conversion
of the programs to use their forms would be a lot of workwheras the code
to run Viaduct forms is embedding subroutine calls in the Basic code.
That is, they are quite different.  Do others have an opinion of
AccuTerm versus SecureCRT?

*Via Systems Inc. has ceased trading.*

If you would like information or have enquiries relating to either the
UniVision DBMS or ViaDuct Terminal Emulation software, please visit the
EDP Website by clicking here http://www.edp.co.uk/index.html.

It sounds like they are all but kaput. I suggest you bail ASAP. I know
it will be a pain, but it appears inevitable. May I suggest you take a
look at SecureCRT? It is a very robust, full-featured emulator, and the
folks at VanDyke are extremely competent and helpful.

Does anyone besides me use Viaduct and make use of programming with
Visual Data/Basic to manipulate Windows forms?

I really like Viaduct and the forms capability, but there is one
problem that's driven me crazy for years: after so many calls to the
gui capability, a form will simply freeze when a control, for example
 a button, is clicked.

After some sleuthing I know it's that the VTW.RESPONSE routine is
looping thru code where it is waiting for End to be returned from
the form. Normally this is returned, but when things go haywire it's
not returned and the loop spins forever.

All is fixed ONLY by rebooting the PC.  Nothing else I've found works.
This is obviously a real hinderance for the user community.

 Has anyone seen/solved this problem?

[U2] UniVerse DOS Command - Batch File Error

2010-11-02 Thread Don P. Nagai
I have a batch file on a server running UniVerse. This file can be executed
from Windows Explorer with no problems.

If I attempt to run the same batch file using the UniVerse DOS command, the
batch file will not process. The DOS command line is displayed, there is a
slight delay (2 sec or so) before the EXIT command is issued and the
system returns to TCL, but the batch file doesn't run.

The UV User Ref is pretty vague on details for the DOS command.

Any ideas on what I might be missing?

Yes. I've actually moved the .bat file to the C:\ root directory and
tested
it there as well with the same results.

The test have been:

Executing .bat from Windows Explorer - Works OK.

Triggering DOS and typing in the batch command manually - fails

Placing the batch file in a variable and using EXECUTE to trigger it -
fails

This is really weird

The app is Print Wizard 4. I've been able to use the DOS command from

Re: [U2] how to round to 2 decimals?

2010-10-14 Thread Don Robinson
How about this?

X = 2596 * 8.333 ;*  [X will contain 21632.468]
ANS = INT((X * 100) + .5) / 100
PRINT ANS

The (X * 100) changes X to 2163246.8
The + .5 changes X to 2163247.3
The INT() changes X to 2163247
The / 100 changes X to 21632.47

The output will displays 21632.47

Using a FOR NEXT loop, I run INT((21632.468 * 100) + .5) / 100 and
the OCONV(21632.468,'MR20') versions one million times and got .84 seconds for
the INT version and 4.9 seconds for the OCONV version.

I doubt that 4 seconds would make a difference to most programs but every
little
helps.

I also run the OCONV(ICONV(21632.468,'MD2'),'MD2') version and it took 5.1
seconds.

My point: There is more than one way to skin a cat!

  Using a FOR NEXT loop, I run INT((21632.468 * 100) + .5) / 100 and
the OCONV(21632.468,'MR20') versions one million times and got .84
 seconds for
the INT version and 4.9 seconds for the OCONV version.

I doubt that 4 seconds would make a difference to most programs but
 every little
  helps.

I also run the OCONV(ICONV(21632.468,'MD2'),'MD2') version and it
 took 5.1
  seconds.

Re: [U2] SOAP Submission Issues

2010-07-27 Thread Don
In the meanwhile, can't you manually add the host header using
setRequestHeader function:

ReturnCode = setRequestHeader(RequestHandle,'host','www.host.com')

ReturnCode
0 - Success
1 - invalid request handle
2 - Invalid header (incompatible with method)
3 - Invalid header value

-- from the Ud7.1 Basic Reference Manual
Syntax
setRequestHeader(request_handle, header_name, header_value)
Note: This function is case-sensitive. If you want it to be
case-insensitive, you must compile your programs using the BASIC command
with the -i option.

Description
The setRequestHeader function allows the user to set additional headers for
a request.

Parameters
The following table describes each parameter of the syntax.
The following table describes the status of each return code.

Parameter / Description
request_handle
The handle to the request returned by createRequest().

header_name
The name of the header.

header_value
The value of the header.

 Subject: [U2] SOAP Submission Issues

 Hi all -

I have a client that I have done some work submitting SOAP requests to
existing web services for utilization in their application. I have
never had a problem before and submissions have been reliable until
 now.

I have run into an issue with one particular web service where it is
reporting an invalid hostname is being submitted. I have enabled
Protocol Logging and per the logs, the host is being set to what their
web service expects, but when they receive it, it is not in the
submission parameters where they expect it. They say the expected info
 is formatted like this:

 POST /ws/service.asmx HTTP/1.1

 Accept-Encoding: gzip,deflate

 Content-Type:
 application/soap+xml;charset=UTF-
 8;action=urn:webService/webServiceCall

 User-Agent: Jakarta Commons-HttpClient/3.1

 Host: webservice.server.com

 Content-Length: 1692

What is actually being submitted is:

 POST /ws/service.asmx HTTP/1.0

 Date: Tue, 27 Jul 2010 05:13:12 GMT

 SOAPAction: urn:webService/webServiceCall

 User-Agent: UniData 7.1.x

 Content-Type: text/xml; charset=utf-8

 Content-Length: 1623

Notice the missing Host (among other differences). According to the
 web
service, if I include the Host statement, it will work. I have tested
from a SOAP testing app and it does construct it with the Host
 statement
in place, and it does indeed work.

Nothing I have tried has enabled me to get past this. Has anyone
encountered this or have an suggestions for me to try to get this
 working?

 Thanks,

Re: [U2] Unidata 7.1.9 and .Net DLL

2010-07-21 Thread Don
David,

I sent you an offline email at your flash.net account from my work email.
But I'm glad you detailed it out here.

Good news, I sent a support ticket into Vertex about the missing Geocoder
functionality in the EI XML interface and was told that it will be in
Release 2.9.8 due to be released around September 2010.

This means the entire Vertex logic will be able to use request/response XML
model that the tax calculation currently uses.

(sidenote to those who are wondering what is Vertex)
Vertex is a (payroll) tax calculation engine that is updated monthly with
changes in the US/Canadian payroll tax tables for Federal, State, Local,
County, and School District taxes). I haven't created a tax table in over
15 years with the help of Vertex. This isn't an ad, just an endorsement.

Ultimately we are calling a routine as a 'service' passing the XML and
receiving back the 'answer' XML - this logic will allow abstraction off
 the
'core database' machine since the service call can point to any machine
 --
if they would complete all GeoCode actions with an EI XML interface,
 we'd
be able to be C free... They are a bit slow getting this done -- the
whole EI started as a 'skunkworks' project that ended up being
 marketable,
but the GeoCode stuff is another group. On the tax side, the hardest
 thing
was 'mapping' all the fields to a 'file' so the XML translations could
 just
be handled by UniData -- lots of data in the 'EI request'!

Heck, I can see entire libraries of new functionality being

Have a look at the SET.INDEX command.  The path to the index files is store in

Hello all,

I'm using Universe on AIX and I have a need to copy an Universe file from one
account to another for historical usage. Using the AIX cp command takes
a couple of minutes but the Index is not useable. Using Universe COPY or Basic
read and write takes much longer.

I believe the problem is due to Universe storing the full path to the Index
files in the header of the data file.

Is there anyway to fix the header without corrupting the file?

What's the best way to handle this?

Re: [U2] Printing images

2010-05-12 Thread Don Robinson

Harold,

If you or someone else can pay for it, Print Wizard will do the job plus a lot
more.

If this isn't an option, then a couple of observations about the code the other
person give you.

I have been working to get a full page overlay to print.

To create the overlay image, I setup a printer in Windows using an HP PCL-5
generic driver and printed the pdf form to a file. Do not use a pcl-6 driver as
it's output is very different.

As HTH said, the resulting file needs the trailing reset (ESCAPE E) and other
stuff removed. A hex editor works best for this.

To read the image into Universe, use READBLK instead of READSEQ, just use a big
number for the ending byte position. It will ignore line feeds, attribute
marks, etc. One PRINT statement will print the whole form/logo.

Also, I had to use cursor positioning commands to set the starting position for
the data following the printing of the overlay. Without these, I was getting
the form on one page and the data on the next.

You may contact me directly if you want.

A long time ago, someone shared a way of doing this. Here is what I can
recollect...

* Create BitMap image
* Place image On a document in desired position (ie msword)
* Create a new print to File printer using HP PCL type driver
* Print document
* Using a hex editor, delete last x number of characters
* Determine x by starting at the end and locating *rB. Everything
* after that is printer reset string. (escEesc%-12345X...)
* Save image file from the previous step to a directory accessible from your
program
* Open and print each line from previous step
* sourcepath='/blablabla/':LOGO.ID
* openseq sourcepath to file then
* loop
* readseq line from file else li...@am
* until li...@am do
* print line
* repeat
* closeseq file
* end

Pretty rough but I remember that it was functional.

All:

In Universe I am able to use PCL commands to customize printing, fonts,
spacing, orientation, etc. I'm sure many of you do this.

For example by issuing CHAR(27):'(10U':CHAR(27):'(s1p09v0s6b16602T' in
front of text the printing is Arial 9 bold.

However, I have been unable to figure out how to print images from
within Universe. Something to do with 'bit map', but I can't seem to
get it. I have a file containing JPG format images. I can copy a
record from this file to a windows directory and easily display the
image using windows tools. But, how to get the same binary sent to a
printer and print that image?

Has anyone been able to do this?

Thanks!

ok. UV 10.0.2

Is there a quick way to get to the end of a file to start appending after an
OPENSEQ
Otherthan, a loop to READSEQ until it hits the EOF.

Right now, that is not a problem, but this file could grow to some considerable
size, and
that loop might take a little bit to cycle through.

I didn't see any options for the OPENSEQ to start at the EOF, and didn't find
any commands
that would set the eof (other than WEOFSEQ which doesn't seem likely to help).

I will happily accept everyone's wrath.

I will also repair anyone's credit for a small fee no matter how bad it is,
just send a check for $100.00 to an anonymous PO Box and I'll be sure to get
back with you or just email me at my gmail account. If you believe that,
you'll probably believe this recruiter can find you a job. The company
mentioned has no address, no telephone listing, and no web presence.

It's precisely in this economy you want to go with a reputable company and a
professional recruiter, otherwise, it may actually prolong someone's
unemployment rather than shorten it. The company mentioned has no address,
no telephone listing, no web presence.

If anyone needs the contact information of professional recruiters at some
reputable companies in the US, free to email me. =)

As for the future, if it ever becomes that bad to go with this dude, I'll
take my chances working the fryer.

Re: [U2] AccuTerm File Transfer

2010-02-15 Thread Don Robinson
Kevin,

As OP suggested, the FT program can be used from the command line.

To run from within another program, use the FTX subroutine.

Example program:

* open and read data to be transfered into ITEM variable.

MODE  = 'S,K'  ;* Send from server to PC using Kermit protocol.
FNAME = 'XYZ'  ;* Filename on PC.
PATH  = 'c:\transfer\'  ;* aka Windows folder.
STAT  = '' ;* Will be set if error occurs.

CALL FTX(MODE, '', FNAME, PATH, ITEM, '', '', '', '', '', '', STAT)

This will send the data in ITEM to the PC with a file name of XYZ in the
c:\transfer directory/folder.

The PC directory must exist.

The following will start the WORDPAD program and display the file.
PRINT CHAR(27): CHAR(2): 'wordpad.exe ': PATH: FNAME

By changing the mode, you can read the data back into the server and save it,
etc.

Some of this is from memory so there is no guarantee.

convidx.exe - Indexes (you may be better off rebuilding indexes).
convcode.exe - the compile code/object files

Thanks. To my knowledge, Unidata does not have fnuxi, but I know others

[U2] Unidata/SBClient/SBServer Pricing - USA

2009-08-07 Thread Don Verhagen

I'm looking for ballpark pricing for the following Unidata/SB setup for
development. I used to deal with IBM directly not a var. I prefer this
arrangement but it's not mandatory. I have lost all my US IBM contacts over
the last 2 years.

What I need is pricing for the following:

5-User Development license for Unidata 7.x for Windows

Development License for SBServer or whatever the most current incarnication
is. I know there was talk about making SB a .Net component(s).

1-5 SBClient licenses (if the .Net components aren't production ready).

Plus Annual support/maintenance for the above.

Please feel free to contact me OFFLINE as I don't want to make your pricing

I have a client that is considering moving from an mvBase system to a

ports and ranges. Is there an easy solution in Universe to nail the
telnet ports for the users?

Also, they use UREAD and UWRITE and take advantage of the MVClients ability
to read and write to the local workstation, instead of the server when not
using MVClient. I haven't heard of this separation being available in
Universe, other than using something like Accuterm, am I right? Or is there
an easy way to distinguish between writing to the local drive vs. the

planning on assigning each user a directory on the server to write to, does
anyone have any alternate ideas?

Re: [U2] More questions on indexing

2009-07-16 Thread Don Verhagen
In Unidata (v6.x) you can issue the command BUILD.INDEX MYFILE ALL. With the
KEYWORD ALL it's builds/rebuilds all the indexes that have been created on
the file. I would hate to have to remember that INDEX_1 is say, Customer
Name, verus a dictionary named CUST_NAME.

I would agree with others, I rarely had any need to rebuild any indexes with
Unidata, other than part of a file resizing/space considerations.

Unix has it's own set of administration tools different the
windows administration tools, I don't believe they require
about the same knowledge to use, if you are a windows
engineer you would like a windows platform and if you are a
Unix engineer you would prefer Unix.

Even thought I use a Windows platform I prefer Unix systems
as a platform for a Multi-Value system. If you want to
purchase a new system then I would go to Reality (contact
Northgate-IS, John Semen or Mark Pick). It is the rated by
the experts as the best of the systems, Unidata would be
next, and UniVerse would be 3rd.

The first reason is that Unix systems are not susceptible by
Windows viruses. The second reason is security, Most windows
hackers are complete lost in UNIX. The Unix systems are more
robust. The file management is improved in Unix and

The Unix OS was designed for multi users and by mainframe
software engineers who have a far more knowledge of multi
 user environments.

Most companies hire windows network engineers and they don't
like the idea of Unix platforms. However most large companies
run Unix or Aix or Hpux for the platform for Reality or U2.

Some other considerations would be if you are coming from a
different Multi-Value package like Pick D2 or mvBase, Reality
and UniVerse have switches to creating an environment to run
that flavor of Multi-Value, requiring little to no conversion
of the software and database. A big cost factor in the conversion.

G,

Advice at this stage would be not to replicate as there appears to be a bug
in SBClient, i.e. once you get the issue happening there's no way to reverse
it that I know of.

1. Double click an SB+ item to bring up the oonnect screen, the one with the
telephone, computers, satelite et al images.

2. From the top window menu select File.

3. From the drop down menu select Print Options.

4. Tick Use Windows Print Drivers

5. Click the OK button.

Note even after leaving and returning to the Print Options window the Use
Windows Print Drivers appears unclicked, that's a bug.

6. Connect to an SB+ session, selecting GUI mode.

7. Once in SB+ select a menu to go one down from the first menu you see.

8. You should now be seeing an icon bar below the top drop down menu, think
this may have to be setup.

9. Click on the printer icon to do a page dump and it no longer goes direct
to the printer.

We have managed to reproduce on three machines but no one can work out how to
fix it. Thinking if we canned the whole SB+ thing and went with a web
interface this would be a whole bunch easier in the long run. Of course the
goal here, according to management, is to migrate to Oracle so that's
probably a moot point :(

Cheers,
Jeff

I am not able to duplicate the problem. Can you please outline the exact
steps. I am not able to find the small printer icon on the top. Is it
application related or SB+ client window related?

Subject: [U2] U2 Application / Solutions providers list? PICK / U2 Hits?
Any ERP Light applications out there?

Hello folks,

A good number of years ago, there used to be a published list / document
/ book of various PICK / U2 Solutions Providers or Value Added
Resellers and ISV (aka Independent Software Vendors) listing the VAR or
ISV, their vertical markets served, and descriptions of the applications
they provided, (I think it was called PICK HITS or something like that?).

Is there anything similar produced/published these days? It would appear
that such a document would be an excellent vehicle for the continued
proliferation of the multi-valued market. (IBM U2 Marketing - where
are you?)

I too am out of work, but in discussions with a small local MFG type
operation about an IT Manager opportunity.
One of the main aspects they're looking for in this IT Manager position
is someone to find, and implement an ERP Light application. It should
be noted these folks have previously attempted a Epicor solution that
they were sold that when it came time to implement, they discovered
that this Epicor product did not do what this company needed at all.
This company was promised what they wanted it to do could be done, but
then learned well AFTER shelling out big $$, (after expected delivery
time of the mod's), that what they wanted was not currently possible,
but could be attained with 10X the previously shelled out big $$ and a
couple of years of development time from the Epicor development
team. Needless to say, that implementation fell flat on its face, and
now they're out looking again.

Looking for something that does Sales Orders and Sales History,
Inventory Control, AP / AR Financials and maybe a few other basic MFG
type related applications. Surprisingly, these folks are not using any
pre-existing package, but using a lot of home grown type spread sheet
based improvised solutions.

Ideas? Suggestions?

Thank you.

[U2] UV to SAP migration disaster

2009-04-20 Thread Don Robinson
Hello all,

This is an interesting subject. I remember reading several years ago that TI
(Texas Instruments) spent $50 million on SAP and gave up. SAP must be a bear to
implement but TI should have known better.

I have personal knowledge of several migrations/conversions that didn't go so
well. All of them suffered due to under estimating the amount of work involved.
Of course, a lot of the work was due to the sloppiness of the old code,
multiple and obsolete programs, program bugs, etc. But the primary cause of the
under estimate was the eagerness of the sales person(s) to get the deal and not
listen to the programmers.

An Universe to jBASE migration project was abandoned after many months for
several reasons.

An Ultimate to Universe migration is alive and running but took several times
as long as estimated.

A GUI frontend addition to a UV system took a lot longer than the customer
thought it should due to scope creep and a lack of planning and control.

An Unidate to SQL migration is in production but still doesn't do all the
things the Unidata system did.

A Reality to Oracle migration dragged on for 5 years and then the company was
bought out by a company using SAP so they switched to SAP. They are still in
business so I guess that it's working for them.

In another case, the programmer has built a very well organized and functional
system but the PHB's are switching to something else. I don't know why but I
bet it's not due to a favorable ROI.

Why does MV lose out to the SAP's of the world? Marketing! Even IBM does a poor
job of promoting U2 and they have the money to do so. The others in general
have very little marketing money compared to Oracle and Microsoft.

Other factors include too many vendors, each with a share of a rather small
pie. Even when systems are brought together like Unidata and Universe or Mvbase
and D3, the vendors choose to maintain separate versions. As long as there are
so many versions, one of them will never have the resources to have effective
marketing. Of course, there are a lot of other factors.

Perhaps a bigger push into the open source space would help. I recently read
that MySQL has a long history of bugs, like losing all your data, and some of
them will not be fixed. Yet it remains the most popular free database.

We have a better mouse trap, why doesn't the world know it?

Just, my 2 cents worth.

BTW, I'm looking for programming work!
Universe, Unidata, jBASE, etc.
Linux, Aix, Windows, Mac.

They're in slides 7 and 8. The slideshow itself isn't good for much

Thanks for book suggestions as this is one of the concepts that I am having
issues with. Understanding the database/languages, SQL and Csharp, are just
a how-to problem which I've got a pretty decent grasp of. However, RECORD
LOCKING and concurrency seems to be the white elephant in room that I have
seen less written about and worse even less thought out in the

 Hi Don

I'm sure you'll excel there - especially with your depth of
 real-world (ie
 multivalue) knowledge behind you!

But I would highly recommend reading whatever is the latest
 book on SQL
Server and .Net by Roger Jennings before you do (check out
 Wrox press).
Apart from the stuff pointed out here about maintaining three tier
architectures and not just using data binding (actually, data
 binding to
classes is fine, just binding to data sets is crap) the real bitch is
concurrency control and how to handle it when you need to
 start looking at
merge processing. There's a lot of good advise on that in the
 Roger Jennings
books - and details on some hidden language features to make
 SQL Server
access in .Net a lot more performant...

 Best of luck.

RE: [U2] Green Software - Green Business

2008-07-25 Thread Don Verhagen
Susan,

While the below changes may result in green results I tend to believe the
main motivation behind most of the changes were monetary not environmental.

Every green change has monetary benefit to the business owner.
1) Software and Documentation
- No CD production costs / No Reams of Paper

2) Don't commute / Employees don't commute
-- No office building rent/lease, a/c, water, etc.

3) Travel
-- Obvious, however, it may be like me and I like to keep me shoes on in
public. =)

I think the question is what really motivated the change. Money (and
convenience) or green?

Would you make a green change if it *cost you more* money than not going
green.

And as a side note, I hate green, the movement, the color. Can't we go blue?
The sky is blue, so is the ocean, so is the porn..., damn it, blue is out.

This idea is interesting, though. Is this bordering - or
 boldly going -
 into an off-topic discussion?

Software companies (and departments) are among the types of
 organizations
that can most easily lend themselves to Kermit-chrome. I
 can't say that I
require payment by Paypal - my customers' are businesses that have
accounting departments and pay cycles and all kinds of things
 that I don't
feel are my right to force them to circumvent in order to do
 business with
me. But I do provide the software and the documentation via electronic
media, I avoid unnecessary paper, I don't commute and the
 folks that do
work for me also do it from home. I do upgrades and training
 remotely with
more and more use of web-based meetings. So less flying my
 carbon footprint
around (which also conserves my more personal energy!)

So far my efforts to go green have been very easy. They
 corresponded with
technology advances, good sense budget monitoring and
 convenience. That's a
triple win! I would be interested in hearing about other
 companies who are
making any efforts and what kind of efforts to go green.

Replacing monitors? Lowering the power settings? (I'd have a

Hello,

This is a unidata (7.1) reporting question, and I'm asking because
although I can't find the answer in the documentation, I do think I've
seen it
once on another developer's screen.

Suppose I list a file with a command like
LIST ACCOUNTS. I'd get a list
of the IDs down the left hand side of the page
but a lot of wasted space
elsewhere - and a maximum of 22 / 60ish records per
screen / A4 page. So
what I'm wondering is if there's a way to have the report
make use of
multiple columns, using the horizontal space available before
jumping to
the next page?

Thanks

sequence that the printer is using to generate a form-feed) but have not
actually checked all of the info due to the size of the prn files.

We were able to eliminate the form-feed by stripping every occurrence of
CHAR(12), but that distorted some of the text box and bitmap output on the
form.

As is usually done, after converting the prn file to hex, we stripped all
the 1B45, 1B252D313233..., 1B266C... printer reset, orientation and paper
source sequences, but we must be missing something...

 form feed.

Do you know that there's an added formfeed, or might there be something
else added which implicitly causes a formfeed? That is, have you looked at
the data that the printer is actually getting, by capturing your combined
output to a file?

Re: [U2] Large-scale scanner / OCR devices and interfaces to UniVerse {Unclassified}

2007-08-09 Thread Don Kibbey
I've been involved with scanning invoices in bulk for years with a
large law firm. We don't do any sort of OCR on them, we simply tag
them with a barcode value used to link the image with the hand keyed
record. UniVerse is simply the data repository.

My last experience with OCR type devices was with Hendrix machines way
back in the 80's. Even then, they were pretty good at processing OCRA
type face documents for our customer (the US Military). Today's OCR
products are much imporoved.

I would imagine your process will involve three stages, scan to pdf,
OCR system and then into UniVerse. All three steps can be linked
together with simple directory transfers of the data.

Quality control will be the big issue. You may find that you have to
task some poor soul to verify the OCR work prior to import into
UniVerse.

I've been a long time user of both UniVerse and SQL Server. Developed
many things using one, the other or both db's as data sources. I
would say that if your a Java shop, go with UniVerse, if your using
.Net go with SQL Server. It's just too easy to work with data in the
.Net Sql Server world. Not quite so easy to go .net - UniVerse.

This guy wants low cost equipment. If they have been running on a 486
box up until now, speed is certainly not an issue. I'd suggest
browsing ebay for a 1-2 year old dual core server or workstation.
You'd be surprised at how cheap they are once they come off lease.

I do this myself every couple of years. Since this is a business, I'd
recommend tossing the drives that come with the system (they will have
already been used, misused and abused). Get a couple new scsi type
drives to run as a mirrored set. Grab the latest copy of SuSE (or
your choice of linux) and your set.

If you'd like to increase costs a bit, you can alway's purchase
Windows Server 2003.
