What does "maximal mount count" mean?
When I started Linux, it reported that the maximal mount count was
reach for each of my partitions and that a check was forced.
I assume this means that it feels it must check each partition
periodically. Am I right here, or is there something I should be

mount -t vfat /dev/hdg /mnt
Linux recognizes my Superdisk as hdg, not fd0.

I think it's looking for user "root" then your "password" you made at login.
This makes you the root user all powerfull administrator. Most recommend
that as the root user you would then "adduser caymen" and enter another
password so that it's more difficult to damage the filesystems etc
