Greetings, I would like a recommendation as to what would be a good
choice of replacement for my LG CRD-8482B in my Dell Dimension.
I can understand how Dell makes such a killing on there machines
when you learn what the components are worth. :-(

inconsistent when I'm trying to transfer data from CDs onto my HD. As a
result, I've had to do it on a different PC runnint LM8.2 and then ftp
the files into my LM9.0 box.

If i put a cdrom in the drive that the computer can read from, ie a
scratched or dirty disk, the computer just keeps trying to read and will
not let me take the cd out of the drive. I cant unmount it or eject it

I'm installing Linux Mandrake 8.0 BETA 2 on my IBM 386X laptop using a backpack (microsolutions) cdrom with SCSI connection.
I did this installation using the same devices with RedHat 5.2 and to my surprise it had a module (bpcd.o) spcifically for this external cdrom.
However, Mandrake
Mandrake 8.0 Bea requires a minimum Pentium processor.
And the module built for the 2.0 kernel of redHat 5.2 is NOT going to work
with a 2.4 kernel, which is why insmod failed.
You might be able to get Mandrake 5.3 somewhere or you could try RH 6.0, but
a 386 just isn't adequate for 8.0,

message you would get if you tried to mount a music CD (since music CDs don't

i have just upgrade to kde2.0.1 and i have found that the 'eject' options off
the right click menu for my cdrom desktop icons no longer work, mount and
unmount still work but the 'eject' option was really handy (mount will still
close the tray)

Hello! I just tried "cdplay" and it worked! WOW! What a weird
thing. After typing"cdplay" on the command prompt, I was able to hear the
cd. I opened up KSCD from KDE and now it reads the audio cd. I can even

lsof /dev/cdrom will show who currently controls the cdrom (I believe it
stands for "list owner of" but might be wrong on that). For instance if
you get the result ttys1 mc blah blah it means MIdnight Commander is
looking at /mnt/cdrom

Something that might work is to make a 20 MB FAT patition and install MS Dos
and then the DOS drivers for the SB16 soundcard w/Panasonic CD drivers...and
try the DOS boot (might need to d/l the newest "autoboot.bat" image from
Mandrake) feature on the Linux CD.
