RE: (313) Vestax or Technics

2003-07-29 Thread Matthew MacQueen
this coming from someone who plays mostly '80s music
on his radio show. I know your jsut trying to educate
people but that's so typical why not more
minmal techno and early '90s techno?

mostly 80's? Really? I think you mean SOME, but definitely the
minority. The 80's is decade, not a genre of music man! And I consider
myself a student, not a teacher. When you play every single week, for
years, you have to mix it up. I play probably 3-10 records from the
early 90s in a 60 minute show. But whatever.. I vary it constantly on
purpose.

You couldn't have known this, but at my station there are also other
shows adjacent to mine dedicated to harder or minimal techno for an
entire show, so it's not something in my broadcast area I feel needs
greater representation, (esp. when I find a lot of new minimal techno
boring/lacking). You would have enjoyed our Bleep techno marathon but
that would bore me to tears to play it every single week, techno has
changed and some of it (gasp) even for the better. And I thought *I*
was nostalgic for old techno... yikes

BTW - I do appreciate ALL feedback on my show, both negative and
positive. Electronic music to me is too large to stay micro-genre or
period focused. It's just a different philosophy than yours,
obviously. Staying up late to hear Mojo playing freeform as a teen
inspired me to connect the dots all over the genres/periods... but most
DJs don't. A lot of people (maybe even you) can't handle it, they want
to keep putting things in boxes that are more comfortable for what
they're used to.

Consider making a website and posting your own mixes consistently, it's
a challenge. You don't need a radio station to have a radio show. Turn
that criticism into some ideas and positive energy... fill the need
yourself with what you feel is missing. Many people do this instead of
complaining about what others freely offer. Bring joy to others with
your excellence in nothing but early 90's techno selections.

I disagree, there's always room for improvement especially
if you have a formula that works. Look at all the Detroit
labels trying to sound like the '80s with electro.

To me it doesn't sound 80s, that's where we differ. There are
influences, sure, but it's not trying to sound 80's.

And making such comments about pitch is not considering
 this is the 313 list?

I think the comment about what pitch is one person's opinion, not some
universal mandate. I myself think it's silly, as to do a lot of the
mixes I attempt, things have to be pitched way up or down to even pull
it off since the tempos are all over the place.

I'm just telling it like I see it.

As am I. HIGH FIVE!!

To be fair, this is a statement that it's trendy now to
play records at normal tempo and house music is more trendy
than techno at least on this mailing list.
People here seem to feed off the vibes of the deephousemusicpage

Ha! Steve I always like how you keep us abreast of the latest trends in
dance music.. as I can't be bothered much myself to worry if I'm
following trends or bucking trends properly or not. I'm too busy
finding and playing out the music I like. But if any music or DJ styles
I post about fall in or out of trendiness can you please let me know
and I'll change accordingly.

RE: (313) Vestax or Technics

2003-07-28 Thread Matthew MacQueen
Irrelevant to my point. What I observed is your trend vigilance and I
perceive it as a waste of time and has nothing to do with most people
like or play. I think the only person so concerned with the trends is
music is you, so you can discredit them as soon as they emerge.

Music changes over time, thank god, it's fluid. There will never be
another KDJ I can't kick this feeling just like there will never be
another SEAWOLF and there are great reasons why both of them were made,
and there's equally great reasons why people have moved on and those
records should never be made again.

Your trendspotting is getting trendy, not to mention tedious. Just
observe that trend if you will please... and please stop casting
yourself as a rebel, it just reads as ignorance.

Now even Jeff Mills is mellowed out and mid tempo, trends change and a

because it sounds better that a lot of contemporary dance
 music.

To you. So that is an excuse for LFO to keep making the same tracks over
and over? I don't buy it. While diehard fans might want an artist to
stay in their personal favorite period (to your ears 'the best' period)
forever, the vanguard artists will always want (for better or worse) to
push a sound forward, especially in a genre like techno that rewards
innovation. You can't freeze a musical time period and put it in a
bottle and expect to keep progress at the same time. Get over it.

How about using some of the same concepts bleep and
bassline sound instead of 'rehashing' with out
making it sound like stupid tech-house/basic channel/
micro house/broken beat/ stupid stupid stupid.

Who said his new material is trying to be something else? If it doesn't
sound like old LFO and you're going to be unhappy, well start get
disappointed now because it probably doesn't. You could take it up with
the artist, see how far you get. Ha ha

The stupid labels you mention are just words that became labels for
artists pushing things in different directions, thus they got named to
separate or highlight them. If they didn't move in different
directions, we'd all be stuck in a rut and all electronic dance music
(or whatever) would sound much more similar even than it does today.
Things change, morph, take in old and new influences and move where the
artist wants to take things next, get over it. Techno will never go
back to the way it was 10-15 years ago, nor does it need to.

flooding the market at the time, the right mix of everything. Pan Soul
is filling to listen to, like a good meal! Ha ha..

BTW on Pepe Bradock, how hard is that older Kif stuff to track down?
What do people consider the must-haves of the Kif material?

I'll admit more than a few of the Pepe Bradock remixes I've heard have
just been so-so, but his original productions I have had more success
with. Of course that's completely subjective and has a bit to do with
the source tracks getting remixed too... so, FWIW.

Detroit Experiment I was really only feeling a couple
tracks, it seemed pretty cut and dried, like stuff that
has already been done better by Herbie Hancock in the 70s
which is a real pinnacle of music for me.
 Herbie is sick!

I am telling you Midnight at Twenty Grand is the cut!! Such a moody
detroity soundtrack, I can imagine driving into the city to that one, or
looking out a rooftop across the city on a warm night outside.

BTW - Totally agree about Herbie... not trying to take anything away
from him. But as a proponent of future music (esp. of the detroit
flavor) I can't just sit back and say well that sound has been done
better 30 years ago by someone else so why bother. I want people to
keep pushing, I want to hear someone who'll in 30 more years have blown
Herbie away... hey I know it's far fetched but you know what I mean.
Once you have the Herbie moments on vinyl you need, there's plenty of
places and trajectories he's launched forward... I want to seek out
where those seeds landed and who is taking it forward... on the
electronic tip especially. Ayro seems promising...

So you jazz fans, how about the top 3-5 must have Herbie Hancock LPs
or moments ? Commentary encouraged.

2003-07-06 Thread Matthew MacQueen
JT, it's so simple... You're wrong. JUST KIDDING!! If everyone liked
the same stuff the world would be as boring as a 7 hour John Aquaviva DJ
set... ok whatever but you know what I mean. ;)

Disclaimer: this is not an attempt to get you to like it (a pointless
exercise to anyone for any reason) but more of the reasons why I see
merit in this .. and others of his records.

I like Amp Fiddler because it's not techno or house but it has the
elements of detroit sound that I like to hear in other music I listen
to. It's funny you use jazz as a reference cause that's the last thing
I would have likened it too. I like the songwriting. I would classify
it as 'rb' or 'soul' before I would think of it as jazz, but wherever
you come from is how you relate and describe things so whatever, that's
pretty moot point anyway. I also know very little about jazz compared
to most, so maybe I don't have the same distaste as a more typical jazz
head might.

I also think when you take a mouthful of something and spit it out
immediately (judging from your reaction that seemed to be the case?) You
might have written it off wholesale without looking a little further. I
like Freakin, reminds me of a cut you'd hear coming out of someone's
trunk at a BBQ in the summer, recalls a Fatback or SOS Band vibe almost.

I like the lyrics to love and war... didn't hear any scat myself.

The keys playing I find interesting, moreso than the rhythms... the
piano keys in 'love and war' I think are great and moody. Did you
listen to the electronic synth parts in freakin' ? Crazy analogue
sounds and squiggles and synth farts, etc. It's just a fresh little
summer jammy jam, I don't see anything generic in it.. the solo is nuts!
Or if nothing else, fun and groovin.. not a whole lot else to think for
me. I agree the KDJ version was a bit of a let-down.. if you want
better examples of that check the Mahogani or KDJ collaborations (DOH -
too late you bought this one!) ;)

Maybe the expectations where too weird but I also don't think that much
about it, I liked the grooves, a summertime kind of sound and the man
has a lot of talent on the keys and I like the sound of his voice myself
too.

The beats I think could be better compared to other elements of his
productions, but we'll see what happens in the future... Maybe Amp
just needs some $tinkworx beats to liven it up!!

PS - I love Detroit Experiment as one of the whole greater than the sum
of the parts thing, each track is a little different and the crazy
influences do come out individually AND collectively (to me). Midnight
at Twenty Grand!!

It seems to be the trendy thing now with a lot of techno heads to
dislike where Carl is going on the jazz collective tip and I'm not havin
it... music needs to expand, the detroit sound is way to wide to stay
pegged in a single genre. I'm glad people are going for it.

Peace,
Matt MacQueen

PS - Speaking of... Now I gotta go drive to Dusty Groove and pick up the
new Dwele LP:

From DustyGroove.com -
sparkling debut from Detroit's Dwele -- a sweet vocalist in the Donny
Hathaway tradition, but with a tight, beat heavy soul sound that glides
between 70s soul jazz, mellowed-out Jay Dee synth hop groove, and the
natural soul vibe ?uestlove brings to his productions! We first caught
wind of Dwele on Slum Village's Tainted single, and that's a good
indication of the sound you'll find on the debut. Mellow, trippy keys
and sound washes drench the album from beginning-to-end, with Dwele's
often deeply layered vocals weighing the bright, modern groove aspects
of the sound with a rich sense of soul history. There's a slight 70s
soul jazz vibe, too, in spots -- a sophisticated studio groove with
bright bass and some sunny, soulfully strummed electric guitar. Dwele
finds some truly nice middle ground between the natural soul scene,
modern groove, and the mellower beats and grooves of the best Detroit
hip hop of recent years -- a scene that Dwele indeed was a player in
before finding his soul muse. Great stuff -- similar enough to some of
his contemporaries -- but still wholly unique in Dwele's embrace of a
bright, sunny, polished sound that still manages to maintain naturally
soulful grit and grease! The title track is a classic -- crackly,
thumping beats, sweetly chiming keys, and capital M Moody vocals -- and
many others are nearly as strong! Includes Hold On, Find A Way, Day
At A Time, Kick Out Of You, Sho Ya Right, Lady Mahogany, Money
Don't Mean A Thing, and more. 10 tracks on the LP.

some french people have bootleged a record
with good girls and stevie knows on it (with also 2
others d.may hot tracks on it)

that sucks for the artists if the originals are still in print... what
were the other tracks? And didn't Designer Music vol. 1 get re-issued
awhile back anyway? OR am I crazy but I thought it did.

Like there's that bootleg of detroit classics I saw in the shop, and I
thought most or all of those tracks are still very much in print on
transmat, metroplex, etc. I don't understand why someone would buy it
given you could get the official 12 for $6 or so, better mastering,
supporting the original label, etc.

Strangely enough Dept. -- There's also a bootleg of that cover
terrible version of Knights of The Jaguar floating around with 3 other
random tracks on it (one of them by James Brown). Why the hell anyone
would want the Sony version of Jaguar baffles me, on a crappy bootleg no
less. I forgot the name of the boot, it's something like About Time
vol. 2 or something like that. Full disclosure: I'm not POSITIVE it
was the Sony version, but it sure as hell wasn't the Rolando version on
UR, it was terrible. But it was definitely trying to recreate the exact
song with different-yet-similar percussion, synths and melodies.

According to the man who sold it to me (for 35 $), juan
and derrick (whom this record was given to)
have said that the sound is better than the original.

Of course a salesman is going to tell you whatever he has to get you to
buy a bootleg for $35... I would tend to doubt it... the artists are
going to have the masters afterall, not the bootlegger. :P But I guess
anyone can cut a record louder if that's what you mean.

Read the fine print, (from memory here?) it says something like
remixing by Ken Collier over to the right of Tell Me that I'm Dreaming
or something. Remix isn't by Was (not was) as you might assume from the
title. I didn't even know Collier was involved with them until
recently. Cool! Who else did he remix.. ?

Spottin' with a magnifying glass (sorry),

(313) Rick Wilhite in Chicago tonight

Wednesday July 2
Soulphonetics
Boo Williams * Glenn Underground * Rick (Godson) Wilhite

Don't know if there is cover charge or what, but this is a small-ish
bar/live venue in Wicker Park. Never been on a Wednesday, but I actually
love this space. This is where we threw the gig when CiM and Clair did
the deFocus mini-US tour. It's nice intimate (non clubby) vibe, lights
down low, and drinks are cheap. The Cabaret Room upstairs has 2 levels
and really nice sightlines to the stage and dancefloor from the second
(kind of U-shaped) balcony floor.

From their website:

Subterranean of Chicago is located in the heart of Wicker Park
Bucktown in a 3-story, 110-year-old building. It's upstairs 'Cabaret
Room' was host to a brothel during the 1920's, while 'the Lounge' on the
1st floor was a 'wire room' for gambling. When the guests needed to flee
the authorities, they escaped through the basement's underground passage
(now boarded up) which led into a tunnel allowing access to the Coyote
building across the street.

Hmm sorry but i bought it on sight and after listening i thought it
was
a bit of a waste of money, It is basically a drum track and more made
for the DJ's apparently, not really worth for listening at home.

yeah i didn't pick it up when i heard it as the main tarck
seemd a little 'noisey' for me and the drum tracks seems
a little too minimali was saying this to friends tho
that it's probably one of those tracks that you
turn down then hear it in the right environment (big PA)
 and it'll blow you away...

yeah I like it, a cool track to mix and the yeah the drum track is
minimal but it's great low end in places! I like to see Carl back in
action making tougher tracks. I'm not feeling the version with Garnier
edits or whatever, I like the tres demented version one.

Isn't something in the water (does not compute) one
of the baddest electronic songs to date. Drum programming
is badass and the minimal computer synth sound is more
original than most things out today.

Totally agree!! listening to it now, the sounds and drum machines it's
really a funkier take on some of the sounds that sprang to life on
Kraftwerk Computerworld, which came out only a year and a half before
1999 was released! Crazy.

Oh god where to start, pretty subjective:

--Sign O' The Times 2xLP- probably all around best display of talent, he
plays every instrument on every song 'cept for one live track done w/
The Revolution... amazing. I like this review too
http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amguid=CASS70305141450sql=A31820r
8ac489

--Dirty Mind (1980!) - Synth work on here and all around funkiness is
electrifying

I like 1999 a lot too - Something in the Water (Does Not Compute)

--Purple Rain - a masterpiece in it's own right
--Around the World in a Day - more conceptual, still great songs, deeper
and less pop polish in some ways, though still had some hit singles too.
I've always had a soft spot for Pop Life

There are some cool songs on Prince LP and For You, both completed
in late 70's. but don't start there unless you get to be a real fan ;)

Crystal Ball is a crazy compilation (I think mine is 5xCDs?) that was
boot only for awhile, then I think Prince just started selling it
himself. (?) It's material around the time of Sign O' The Times and
others. Some are brilliant outtakes that never made it onto albums!!!
Some is filler though.

There is also a recent Live thing one night alone that I have heard
good things about, the tracklist is pretty incredible (lots of old
stuff) but I haven't heard it yet

There are a zillion bootlegs though, many live ones collected/traded by
fans on lists, etc.

Fantastic movies...no fcuking way, could this interviewer

this interviewer is the Electifyin Mojo so show let's show a little

Look at it context man, this was near the Zenith of his career at the
time, and when it came out in 1984 and he was at the top of his game, He
had only done one movie and it was hype. And you have to imagine the

the hottest act in the country at this time! You better believe it was

It's slated for September 2003. Still Music is a new label run out of

house / nu jazz /broken kind sounds, but they do a variety. There's more

Just ordered this record... Is it as good as
  one would expect based on
everything else that KDJ has put out? Better?

I think it's one of his best.

Yeah it's that good. I really think he's hitting a second stride of his
career, the productions are just getting better and better, more
electronic but just as deep. I will always love the early KDJ sound
too, the low-fi applause and old soul samples in it, really rough. But
this moves him into more of a futuristic direction to my ears, but it's
still conceptual and moody/moving and deep as hell too. This is the
best Moodymann thing he's done in awhile IMHO... there is little else
out there that sounds quite like this, he's breaking more ground with
this release moreso than in the recent past.

I know this sounds corny but if you are a prince fan, this (to me)
conjures up some of the same feelings as prince 'Around the World in a
Day' LP when I first heard it... the whole concept thing.. Condition of
the Heart, etc.. OF course the music sounds very different but it takes
you up and down through a similar series of moods.

Matt MacQueen

RE: (313) playlist WNUR Chicago - 20 June 2003

2003-06-25 Thread Matthew MacQueen
well isnt he a fan of prince himself?

Ha.. that's probably an understatement :)

I thought I had a moodyman remix of a price track around
here somewhere.. maybe in ny the critics love you or
something like that I cant remember the track name

You are probably thinking of the doublepack of U Can Dance If U Want 2
(KDJ 9) which is basically different jackin reconstructed versions of
all the critics love U in new york (from the 1999 LP, circa '82 or
'83)... amazing.

Then there's the black JAN 12 that is the cut-up interview of the
questions that Mojo asked prince on the air from a detroit radio
interview. The connection is definitely there.

Prince and Detroit is a STRONG connection to be sure. Has everyone read
the interview where Mojo interviews Prince on the air? It's incredible.

(313) Mojo interviews Prince (1985)

2003-06-25 Thread Matthew MacQueen
Some trivia:

--
THE ELECTRIFYING MOJO (1985)

On the eve of his birthday in 1985, Prince gave a surprise interview to
legendary Detroit disc jockey the Electrifying Mojo. He had never
offered a live radio interview before. Of the experience, Mojo later
said:

I had no idea he was going to call. I had no list of questions or
anything like that. First I talked to Billy Sparks and he said, 'Hey
Mojo! Prince wants to talk to you. You got a minute?' I said, 'Do I have
a minute? Give me a minute to make sure we have a tape on,' and Prince
says, 'Hey Mojo! What's happening? This is Prince.' If I hadn't heard
Billy Sparks' voice prior to that, I may have said, 'Yeah, right.'

The following is the text of the spoken interview, as transcribed by
Rose Gardner on the Emancipation mailing list.
---

MOJO: This is the one-man hit machine from Minnesota. Ladies and
Gentlemen...Prince.

PRINCE: Hello, Detroit.

MOJO: How are you?

PRINCE: Alright, how are you?

MOJO: Well, Prince... I heard nothing but magic flowin' down from the
concert. How was it?

PRINCE: Mmm, a lot of fun. You should've been there.

MOJO: I was there in spirit. I wanted to be here for one reason...I
wanted to be here, so that the moment that the concert was over...I
wanted to flood the airwaves with Prince.

PRINCE: Well, you know what? I was driving from the gig, wiping the
sweat off my brow, and I heard Automatic. And we just got through
playin' it...we don't normally play that one. It went over pretty good,
and I think it's 'cuz of you, and what you've done for us and...my
thang. It's a good feeling. I just wanna tell all my little motor babies
that I'm just happy to be here...and it's a fun way to spend my
birthday, for sure.

MOJO: Happy Birthday to you.

PRINCE: Thank you.

MOJO: Prince, you've been the entertainer that has insisted on doing
things one way...your way.

PRINCE: Well, you know, it's like...I worked a long time under a lot of
different people, and most of the time I was doing it their way. I mean,
that was cool, but ya know, I figured if I worked hard enough and kept
my head straight, one day I'd get to do this on my own...and that's what
happened. So I feel like...if I don't try to hurt nobody...and like I
say...keep my head on straight...my way usually is the best way.

MOJO: Growin' up in Minne-wood, as it's been now called, simply because
that is the hot point on this planet right now.

PRINCE: Well, it's been called a lot of things, but it's always Uptown
to me.

MOJO: Uptown?

PRINCE: Yes.

MOJO: What was it like growin' up Uptown?

PRINCE: Pretty different. Uh, kinda sad, to be exact. (laughs) I mean,
the radio was dead, the discos was dead, ladies was kinda dead, so I
felt like, if we wanted to make some noise, and I wanted to turn
anything outI was gonna have to get somethin' together. Which is
what we did. We put together a few bands and turned it into Uptown. That
consisted of a lot of bike riding nude, but ya know...it worked. We had
fun. That's why I wanted to come here on my birthday...'cuz I wanted to
give them a little taste of where we live and get a little taste of
where you all live. To me, this is like my second home. If I could spend
the night at somebody's crib, I would...'cuz this hotel They're real
nice to us, but, this bed is hard!

MOJO: You've made fantastic albums, and you've made fantastic movies,
and you're making another movie right now.

PRINCE: Yeah.

MOJO: What's the difference between making a hot movie and making a hot
album?

PRINCE: There is no difference. There have been people who have tried to
tell me contrary to that, but like you said before and like I said
before, I strive for perfection, and sometimes I'm a little bull-headed
in my ways. Hopefully, people understand that there's just a lot on my
mind and I try to stay focused on one particular thing. And I try not to
hurt nobody in the process. A movie is a little bit more complex, but to
me it's just a larger version of an album. There are scenes and there
are songs, and they all go together to make this painting, and...I'm the
painter. Y'all is the paintees. (Mojo laughs.) Hopefully it's something
that you can get into. Jerome Benton stars in this new film with me and
he's on his way to becoming very, very big. I'm real proud of him. He
takes direction well and he gives direction well and I expect a lot of
big things from him.

MOJO: Speaking of Jerome Benton, and other people who've flown under the
wings of Prince, and also speaking of Detroit's own Billy Sparks, a
person that you took from Detroit, put him in your first movie...

PRINCE: Yes.

MOJO: You've always maintained contact with people that you've always
been in contact with.

PRINCE: Oh yeah. Without a doubt, there's people who have flown the
coop, so to speak, and gone off to do their own thing, which is great
and I stand behind them and support them, whatever they

the title track! Really nice if you like that whole deep detroit house
sound, but the production is a bit cleaner and has a more overt use of
jazz instruments and sounds. A class production that will appeal to fans
of deeper house like kdj, harmonie park, elevate, deepside / st.
germain, glasgow underground, neroli, etc.

(313) speaking of shake - new Frictional EP

2003-06-10 Thread Matthew MacQueen
Speaking of Shake...

Check out his excellent new Convalesce EP on Frictional. A 2-tracker
with a long gorgeous track on both sides:

- Lay Back (in the Cut) is a smoother instrumental electronic
instrumental hip-hop tempo affair.. if you remember his OUTSTANDING
contribution to the 11 Phases compilation on Sublime a few years back,
this is in a similar mood/style... contemplative, deep and gorgeous.

- ...Like A Dream (soundhack mix). Originally this track came out on
his awesome Songs for my Mother EP on Frictional. The Soundhack remix
tightens it up a notch to creates a funky, jerkey, slighty more uptempo
feeling techno soul gem... that plugs along and begs to be mixed with
techno, house or broken up choppy stuff. Really nice! I love the
original too but let me say this version is a lot easier to slip in and
out of a hotmix. :)

Matt MacQueen

favorites. Bug and Common Factor did a joint release on his Tactile

definitely appeal to fans of Playhouse, etc. The Pull EP:

that's sort of the way I felt about vol. 3 myself. Don't get me wrong -- what
Mills does in this style is better than a lot of the crap out there diluting
the market with average techno -- , but I'd rather have fewer tracks that are

Was this catalog # skipped? Didn't receive a proper release?

I think an early frictional label test pressing came out that was completely

have been one white that was improperly pressed and then just scrapped?? I

a lot of people will probably barf all over this statement
but i think one of the toughest things to do is play a well
 programmed hard techno set.

no you are absolutely right! that's why people who play hard and INTERESTING
with their own personal style can make even the most rigid and boring
monotracks funky: Claude Young! Mills obviously. Surgeon and Jay Dehman
can bring it too, when in form.

The problem is there's for every interesting hard techno DJ there's 100,000 20
year kids with the same records and no skills or ability to program/mix it,
it's just a Beyer megamix yawnfest. It's okay they'll outgrow it ;)

is a key component of what Detroit music is all about.

Right on Kent! This is, over all, one of my favorite streams -- consistently
interesting! Variety, plenty of Detroit representation, and a sense of humor.
The other day I was on and in the same hour or three you can hear Gas,
Stereolab, X-103, Gary Numan, Arab Strap, The Martian, Geto Boys, Ilkae,
NewOrder, CiM, Club 8, Astrobotnia, Camper Van Beethoven, Hab, Tom Elis,
Monolake, Leonard Nimoy!?! and a host of indie bands I've never heard of before
and can't remember anyway.

In the spirit of Mojo, there's a subcurrent of the better B-side or album cut

is also from the journey home ep on warp. Is it this track that is
 on that compilation?
And how rare is that original warp copy actually?

No it's not on the compilation. I don't think the original is *THAT* rare or
hard to find used... anyone know how many were pressed up originally? It's
Warp for gods sake, they had decent first runs of this. I mean it's unlikely

RE: (313) electro house is taking over (maybe not just in OZ)

2003-04-30 Thread Matthew MacQueen
a lot of house music does seem (to me) to be gettting
a bit too polite of late.

this i agree with, but there's ALWAYS been that lame, watered down crap that
gets filed under house, maybe you're just noticing/hearing it more or in the
shops Ken ? There's probably more house labels than techno, (hard to imagine
but... ha ha). House has broader appeal and also more commericalized trends
than techno (a broad generalization, but one I think it for the MOST part
true..).

Even though I have enjoyed virtually
everything I've heard from Geist and Jesrani et al, I do think
that they have contributed rather a lot to a trend of too clean,
  rather tame and 'uneccentric' house.

Sorry Ken I gotta take issue with this offhand comment... THey didn't
'contriubute' to it, they created their own sound! They made something
original out of older inspirations and spawned an army of immitators... some
intersting but most IMHO weak by comparison, or not different enough from M.A.
to hold my interest. I also find Metro Area anything BUT uneccentric! So
the first time you heard them could you really say that? All the varied roots
you can hear in their tracks, i think the combo of all those sounds is truly
eccentric, as eccentric as the weirdo 'lost tracks' they play if you've ever
heard them DJ out. When they dropped these Metro Area 12s one at a time there
was nothing else quite like it (new) on the dance music market... w/ live
instruments combined with deep funky electronics yet didn't sound noodle-y and
silly, nothing that was made in the last decade anyway. It's just sewn up so
tight... Now it's taken a couple of hard-fought years of their sound honing and
now that they have found some exposure and a 'sound' all their own, people will
label it a trend, which is too bad, Metro area was so eccentric people has
difficulty categorizing it, which is often a good sign IMHO.

Just as a point of comparison: Jeff Mills got blamed when he did this around
the time he clicked solidly into 'that Purposemaker' sound for awhile, and
series of first 3 to 5 12-inches on that sublabel and then everyone complained
that techno was all going into 'that purposemaker sound'. OK, but the one think
I don't think is fair to do is BLAME the innovator (in this case Mills) for all
the purposemaker copycats! Some producers made careers as making purposemaker
'cover tracks', ha ha.. sad but true. It's one thing to be inspired, it's
another (and a fine line in techno to be sure) to make copycats.

If you don't like the tight production values that you can hear in MA (not raw
enough) all I can say is Morgan's productions have *always* had that sharpness
and precision, even on his old Metamorphic and Environ and Clear records, when
it was more techno than house. His production values have been consistently
high throughout, and his ear for melody as well I think few have it quite like
that.

There is plenty of raw house stuff out there too, it's just that (in my
experience) there's not a lot of it that shows the same kind of quality you
hear with Metro Area. I am of course a huge fan of chicago jackin' trax, love
em!!! but for me there's not a lot of raw or really unique house coming out
(of chicago right now anyway) that was the way it used to be. New generations
of producers aren't as constrained as the founders were, and you get a lot of
stuff made on computers and not a lot of 2nd and 3rd generation house producers
are selling their iMacs for RZ-1's, etc. ;)

Which is why I've somewhat gone back to much older
material which displays a roughness simply because that was
all that was possible at the time (I'm talking pre-1990) from
the technology available. Also, what new stuff I buy has to have
 some sort of edge.

I do share your desire for uniqueness too, but i don't feel like house needs to
be underproduced or 'rough' to have it. Not as a sole trait anyway.

on the previous points (many others commented on too):
About the whole 'electro house' genre, I think as most silly over-labeled genre
names go, (microhouse? techhouse? hardhouse? househouse???) they are coined
by journalists who need to sell in headline in the here today, err wait, i've
got a different career tomorrow world of dance music journalism. (save for a
few of the quality writers, Tom Magic Feet, Mr. Sicko and a handful of others
who have been into the music longer than flavor or magazine of the month ;)

herion house is the stupidest yet... can we please let that die, it was a silly
term by a bad writer and the music has connections to heroin except in the
writers own veins. I thought it was buried years ago. If you're trying to
categorize Theo Parrish: yes it's difficult and that's why it's so good. I
know it's natural to want to label things when communicating verbally (in an
email list for example) but putting a big magnifying glass over every artist
and trend is a sure way to burn

(313) electro house is taking over (maybe not just in OZ)

2003-04-30 Thread Matthew MacQueen
However, pls re-read my original post before saying I don't like Metro Area.
As you in fact pointed out yourself, I said:

'I've liked everything of theirs I've heard'!

yep, duly noted Ken :) I was just responding (ad nauseum, in retrospect) more
to you singling MA out as somehow responsible for all the weak immitators and
flaccid house that is coming out now... which is what I took issue with. You
can't just can't hold the true innovators responsible for the army of (largely
bad) copycats. It ain't their fault... and you can't just lump them in the
same group as the others IMHO. Ok nuff said from this end.

cheers,
Matt

2003-04-30 Thread Matthew MacQueen
I agree that Metro Area really put together a unique sound,
but definitely not without precedence and influences.

oh yes totally agree... you can also hear plenty of 313 in it, in the realm of
cybotron / kraftwerk / YMO influences, especially in the first MA 12-inch...
then coming in from the other side you have a Prelude / D-Train / Moroder kind
of synthetic disco. The 2 coming together is bliss, especially for people who
like both techno AND disco, but you rarely get to hear that sound together on
more than a handful of good records.

scene! Minnie Riperton's still in the band on vocals, and her work on the LP is
similar to that on the legendary Come To My Garden LP. The album features the
incredible track I Am the Blackgold of the Sun -- a haunting soul anthem that
has been a favorite of groovers for years, and which was later made into a
house track by NuYorican Soul. A great album all the way through, and filled
with loads of excellent cuts! Other tracks include If I Sing My Song, Hey,
Love, Love Has Fallen On Me, and a cover of Terry Callier's Song For
Everyman.

typo, that's Innerzone (Orchestra)... I know 'Bug' gets namechecked by a lot of

sampled/used in any modern dnb tracks? There were some decent remixes on
mo'wax when it got reissued again in like '95 or '96... (4 hero, peshay,

RE: (313) That Sloppy Ass Broken Beat Mix I Been Saying I'll Do

2003-04-25 Thread Matthew MacQueen
Unfortunately, this mix didn't turn out like I'd hoped.
It's kinda sloppy in a couple of parts. Hopefully you
don't think any of my mess is too disastrous. I've never
actually tried to mix an entire set of broken beat stuff before.

ha... no worries! Such is the life of someone who chooses to mix this mad
style! it's a cross to bear i hear ya ;) i feel like some of it does work
well for a fast cut-n-paste fashion, while others (esp. the stringy ones) you
can really ride and wring them out over some acapella beats. But to always
take the safe transitions, intros and outtros is just too boring.

I have yet to hear a super-locked-down-tight mix of something with this much
differing percussion signatures and polyrhythmic breaks and disjointed action
going on... and in the cases where I know the tracks being played, I can often
hear even the most experienced DJs taking a mixture of risks and 'safely mixes'
(ha) the ambient or beatless break areas as places to 'take' to the next new
track, Orrin Walters included. And there is a time for both. I'd say such is
the way of the style, I mean it's BROKE-N ! anyone who says they can lock a
set super tight of this style isn't playing the craziest stuff in the genre...
which to me is the most interesting. Not the noodley, faux-jazz wonky stuff,
(which i am fading fast on) but the real experimental 'technosoul' side of it,
like mustang, titonton, domu, aardvarck(!difficult!), rednose, genre, numbian
mindz, seiji, nu era, son of scientist, moonstar, total science, etc.

hats off for not pre-planning every mix out for the whole thing... that is so
BORING. personally i can never do the same mix more than once or twice max,
life (behind 1200's) is too short and there's too much fun in riding the
randomness of it all, flipping it over and trying out that b-side you never
really gave proper attention to, experimentation, etc.

BTW - Brian Gillespie has pulled off some pretty heroic broken beat flavored DJ
sets in detroit but he'll also tell ya the sh!t ain't easy and frankly i think
it is (and should be) mixed with other genres to really stand out and create
impact.. I love to hear it with similar 'feeling' 4/4 stuff too, UR especially
comes to mind, Ibex, Recloose, As One, Urban Tribe, even Plaid.. (not exactly
4/4 but you know what i mean).

DJ Aaron Shin is also great at mixing broken beat style, he lived in Chicago
but has also relocated to New York, and he was into DJing this style (+ house)
from day ONE.. he taught me a lot and turned me on to sounds I never heard
before. He goes more vocal than I can personally, but if he is DJ'ing out and
about in NYC do catch him. Very diverse and he always has the latest cuts, he's
on the hunt for the new white lables like Ted Nugent on opening day of
bowhunting season. :P

2003-04-24 Thread Matthew MacQueen
can anyone point me to any online clips of the new double helix ep on
  emoticon?

 http://www.emoticonrecordings.com/emot014.html

I'm late on this thread but Hans and Rebecca's sound is just getting better and
better... this record is awesome. And it's definitely a unique sound, you can
hear the Detroit influences but it's original too. (this is how I feel about
Recloose too).

If you like Sync or Swing you definitely need to track down their Funxtiles EP
on Rush Hour... there is a slower tempo cut on there that is wicked (forgot the
name, I think it's on the long side??). All the Double Helix stuff is so
well-produced too, I'm glad they are getting more exposure. The Double Helix
mix CDs are incredible too, diverse selections and deep, cool house/dub and
dusties selections.

Just a few nice words about Shake, who played a brilliant
set last Saturday here in Holland. His choice of records was
amazing, he was going from one point of the musical spectrum.

YEa! He is amazing DJ indeed. I love how everyone raves about his broad
spectrum of selections. It's a lifetime of loving and producing music that
sets this style apart... wish more DJs had the guts to spin out like this, it
sure would make things more interesting! :)

RE: (313) Shake in Holland

2003-04-14 Thread Matthew MacQueen
 add Theo Parrish.

exactly... disco, reggae, minimal chi jack tracks, soul, african music I can't
begin to understand, 70's rb, italo, latin, rocksteady, jazz fusion,
electronics... you can never predict where his sets will go cause just when
you're in the groove of that genre he takes you to the next level on some other
plane. A heavily EQ'd plane, mind... ;)

I have also seen Claude Young pull out some serious surprises when he's on the
freeform tip, but haven't seen him DJ in at least 3-4 years now... that whole
Claude/Shake connection is strong and explains a lot, stylistically and
technically.

RE: (313) Re: New Music and Elitism

2003-04-14 Thread Matthew MacQueen
I noticed the new Richie Hawtin Hardtrax Vol III wasn't
mentioned or the new Monobox also a Detroit artist I
cant think of his name Gary Martin? who released records on KMS has an
album out which has not been mentioned.

great, so mention it! Why wait for someone else to? Ask about it. If possible,
drop a needle on it yourself if you can and post your comments/curiosities.
It's not a one-way list unless you cast yourself solely as a consumer. We can
*ALL* be producers of content here, not just consumers of it. 313 doesn't owe
anyone anything, like any community (virtual or actual) if you want to see
improve, grab a rake and plant some flowers in the front yard. Know what I
mean?

What I read in your comments is despair that the list isn't producing what
you'd like it to. So why not devote that energy into providing content that
you will like and there is a good chance others will read and appreciate it
too. And contribute in kind. OR at least it becomes a good topic for healthy
debate/idea exchange.

Detroit electro labels like Twilight 76, Databse? don't get mentioned a lot.
I'm sure if you compiled a monthly list 313 artist labels it would be a good
 size list.

Mention them then! All of the artists/labels mentioned in this email are very
welcome topics here. Who's job do you think it is to mention them? It's
everyone's responsibility to provide new content, it's not some mysterious OZ
figure hiding behind a curtain at hyperreal. :)

In case you were under any false assumptions, there is no official 313
fountain of knowledge or topic officiator where from all new topics and
releases for discussion are approved and flow from. If you are curious about a
new release, ask for gods sake. If you want to know reviews of things - ask
for them. Better yet, write them yourself when you get something new you are
fond of.

A record review is also not gospel, it's one persons opinion about something
that hits their ear. I like reading multiple list members opinions on a
record, especially when they differ. it keeps it dynamic.

I also second Otto and others recommendation that if finding out about new
releases gets you going, then subscribe to the outbound emails from Submerge,
Hardwax, Rush Hour, Groove Distribution, Groovetech, Sonic Groove, etc. etc.

Sometimes people cut and paste those descriptions to the list and say anyone
actually heard this and it starts a thread or prompts opinions there.
Perfectly acceptable and in fact welcome traffic. After all, it's about the
music.

peace,
Matt MacQueen

What about Traxx? I heard him go from onside to another.
He plays from wave, to pop, to electro to disco...

He played a 4 hour set here when DJ Hell came through (each of them played 4
hours, actually) and Traxx was all over the palce indeed.. he'll even drop some
chicago industrial classics..., italo, classic detroit, proto-312 Jack Trax. He
gets mad indeed, it's a wonder he can hold onto his records with all the sweat
pouring off him. He definitely WORKS when he's on the decks, in every way:
selection, EQ, doubles, long mixes, drop-ins... fun to dance to, if
exhausting, ha ha

(313) artists vs. bootlegging

2003-04-10 Thread Matthew MacQueen
the bootleggers would have a lot less market if the record were repressed

I can't disagree with that logic. BUT... I've been following this thread for
awhile and a voice I'm not hearing in this debate (that is kind of troubling to
me, actually) is the rights of the ARTIST. Art is not necessarily subject to
the same demands as say, any old consumer product where the goal is to sell as
many as possible (say, toothpaste or something). One of the benefits of owning
and running your own label (or printshop, for example) is to control the
trickle - or flood - of your art into an art-buyers market -- more control over
your own destiny. You can still keep things limited or special if, as the
artist, you feel like that is a part of your 'statement' so to speak, of what
you have created.

When a famous potter makes a vase, and they decide to make 5 of them, not
500... it makes that vase unique. You have to think the artist has a reason to
only make 5 if that's what they choose.

Is everyone forgetting that the artist has a right to release as many or as few
pieces of art as they feel? Sure there are ramifications of releasing few,
I'm not denying that: if demand is high enough and the art is scarce, it may
get bootlegged. That is a risk.

But an artist of any medium is certainly never OBLIGED to fill the needs of
every consumer! That is the artists right. I have detected this slight tone
of well if he just would have pressed up more it wouldn't matter, he deserved
it, etc. -- but the reality is sometimes an artist might want LESS of
something out there, not more, as part of the artistic statement itself. I
respect artists who choose to release less, not more... even if I can't have a
copy myself. But that doesn't necessarily mean I'm going to bootleg it (and
profit from it) if I can't find my copy.

peace,
Matt

RE: (313) artists vs. bootlegging

2003-04-10 Thread Matthew MacQueen
i can see why kenny is pissed off about this-he's started a
label and put out a limited pressing to see how it does and some
f#ckers decide to bootleg it and make some money

Exactly. A footnote:

Why is the UR S.I.D. series special? I mean, MOST of the releases (not all
IMHO) are excellent music, first and foremost. But as a secondary factor:
it's because you can only get them new from the Submerge store. They are less
widespread.

Also you don't see people bootlegging the UR S.I.D. records because they know
UR has eyes and ears everywhere (aka - Operatives) ;) and they defend their
independence and control of distribution in a militant manner. It's not
perfect, but it's worked thus far.

I don't see any problem UR seeking out who booted the KDJ stuff, because it
could happen to UR too. If the artists stick together and 'protect the hive',
a swarm is always more lethal than a single bee.

 he's always been into jazz.

another great example of Pulsinger effectively working techno and jazz flavors
has to be the track City Lights on Dogmatic Sequences vol. II... on Disko B
if I recall. Came out mid to late 90s. I always still play this track, the
version with the stand-up bassline, and really lush strings.. very original
sounding tune. It's got jazz influences by I wouldn't describe it as Jazzy
if you know what i mean.. that word doesn't even do it justice. A true deeper
sounding influence in his electronic music, esp. in the percussion. Just a
brilliant, timeless track.

(313) Theo Parrish in Detroit last Sunday

2003-04-01 Thread Matthew MacQueen
Quick note to say checked out Theo Parrish at the Sound Signature
'residency'(?) Sunday night in Detroit -- the Instant Vintage night at Fifth
Avenue. Dan Sicko and I popped down to 2100 Woodward, it's basically the a new
bar in the corner of comerica park, a dimly lit lounge/bar area with laid back
tables, chairs, and some pool tables in the back, little candles all over.
Only $3 to get in...

Nice bar/space and Theo was laying it down thick with decks set up on the stage
and crates of wax spilling out everywhere. Good turnout for a Sunday night -
the heads turned up and lots of groovers coming in the later it got, filled up
by midnight and a nice spacious dancefloor. He was dropping all kinds of older
stuff incl. Gil Scott Heron the bottle, Peter Brown do ya wanna get funky
and one of my favorite Prince cuts of all time the ballad of dorothy parker
... man... Kenny Dixon Jr. rolled in later to take it in and a good vibes all
around.

The hometown crowd was up for it (plenty of little cuties too) and again a
great opportunity to boogie down with mixed ages and races, from uptempo to
laid back, quite a spectrum and a nice little intimate gathering for One Nation
Under A Groove. I don't know how regular he is playing with Instant Vingate
but one to look out for if you happen to be in the mood.

(313) CiM - Noki Bay EP - REVEIW

2003-04-01 Thread Matthew MacQueen
CiM - Noki Bay EP (Ann-Aimee)

Simon Walley makes techno music on his own terms, when he wants and to a level
of earnestness and maturity of craft unmatched by many. His first proper
release in a few years (and following mini US tour of live dates w/ John Tejada
in 2002), CiM hasn't missed a click with the further extension of a sound now
very much his own.

On the new Ann-Aimee imprint (following a strong debut EP from Alex Cortex)
comes a new 9-tracker EP. Signature for CiM the tracks are short and sweet,
most clocking in around 3 minutes - but the amount of depth and emotion packed
into each one goes far beyond their tracklength. The tracks are like
super-concentrated electronic music pellets, each tiny one fully expands
tenfold to fill and soak the room where it's played, recalling all the great
reasons why you seek out 'listening techno' in the first place.

The EP opens with a couple of deep sweeping stringy pieces with plodding fresh
electronic beats. Track #4 'Fuss', at only 1:33, is a little microcosm of all
things CiM: the combination/contrast of deep Detroit contemplative melody
offset with bass depths, clicky ticks and pure techno bleeps. Robot love
software patches, or bittersweet long-range driving music for a rainy day?
Your call.

'Dance Party' (#6) is an adventure in beat programming, you bob your head as it
gets twisted and jerked around by synth squirts and squelches... road-tested
and played in live sets last year, this sought-after cut finally makes it to
vinyl. But it's 'Pop Squabble' (#7) that seals the deal, an outpouring of
electronic beauty at around 100bpm, deep bassline and warm synth pads and
strings added to change it throughout. A future classic in the making, every
detail balanced just right... you won't forget this track. The EP finishes
with aptly named 'close', a moonlit goodnight caress with gorgeous tonal
simplicity.

CiM takes the warmth and feeling of Detroit techno and wraps it with his
signature crispy beat programming and British bleeps into a futuresound all his
own. An heir to the next generation of producers, CiM has earned his seat at
UK techno roundtable, an heir to his older and better-known contemporaries like
B12 and Black Dog Productions. Connections and re-send transmissions crossed
up between London and Detroit but no worries, what falls out are little pieces
of shimmering beauty like this.

RE: (313) Keynote

2003-03-26 Thread Matthew MacQueen
I got a copy of the Stinkworx ep on Keynote on Monday, and it's really
good. There was one track on there which is just outstanding,

I agree this release is really good record. If you liked their Todas Las Noches
release on Delsin from last year, this is a little more electro-ey but still
the similar warm and deep funky synth sounds. My favorite track is the middle
cut on the side with 3 cuts... no tocar i think is the title... it might be
the slowest of the 5 tracks too? Nice electronics and timeless mood. Check it
out.

RE: (313) handbags vs. humanity ;)

2003-03-24 Thread Matthew MacQueen
Before chucking mud at Dixon, and at each other,
perhaps we could have some clarification

My thoughts exactly... can everyone chill out. You know how the internet is.
Unless I heard someone say something or it was a direct quote, it's all
assumptions stacked on assumptions and false conclusions. All subject to each
layer of editorialization along the way. This could all be moot if he didn't
say/write the slur. It's all too easy to judge people falsely and that works
both ways.

Just because you read it on a mailing list doesn't mean someone said it/wrote
it... Racial slurs are horrible but ones that get falsely attributed to people
who didn't even say them are far worse.

I'd love it if a piece of music generated this much conversation, jee. I'm
more interested that there isn't an instrumental or a dub version of it...
1-sided records have to be absolute knockouts to pull that off. We shall see.

If it kick it kick, period

This classic has been repressed... Pick it up.

yes sir! I think i missed this discussion earlier but is the only track on the
repress that was on the original the 'original vocal' ?

Where did the 'megamix' come from on the repress and is it new or old? Great
stuff though.

I highly recommend Smallfish on Old St. Good listening equipment (last I was
there) and super nice people! There are also loads of used shops worth
checking if you have the time and are up for a dig.

(313) Sound Signature # 18 (correction!)

2003-03-14 Thread Matthew MacQueen
yesterday I said whites are circulating of the new Sound Signature #17... this
was a mistake, the whites are actually SS #18... sorry bout that. Which brings
up the question what happened to # 17 ?

Anyway after some time to digest it, a quickie review:

A side is a long fairly uptempo cut that starts minimal with cowbell and
old-ish sounding drums funky and maybe African sounding? builds slowly and
really funky infectious groove. crazy stuff like and some rhythmic flute, comes
in and a small chorus of voices saying a la la la la kind of melody... got to
be a sample of something from long ago, hard to place,... very cool. Then
about halfway into it, most of the elements except for the drums and cowbells
drop out and these warm synth pads come up under it all and really smoothes it
all out. The track feels like it's going over a hill and the sun is shining
now over the bigger, broader vista. A bigger electronic bassline comes in and
now the voices return, more melodies and some soft piano keys. A beautiful and
uplifting piece, one you'd just like to end a set with the way it transforms.

B side starts slow tempo, prob. around 90 bpm and a real plodding slow deep
dark rhythm... distant fait sample that sounds like Eric B. saying you can
clap to this and some cool electronic muted tones come in. Then as the track
gets about halfway there's some clanging sounds and some couple kind of big
drum crashes and a synthy haze. Then a sample breaks through, a female voice
it's true without a doubt in a louder way and some more dramatic crashes...
wicked breakdown. Then the tempo underneath picks up to probably around 120 -
kicks it up a notch, more rhythmic elements join in and it's a jacking dance
track that (after that crazy breakdown) is sure to wake up a dance floor. This
track just gets thicker with electronic rhythm elements and an additional
really simple melody... a few more crashes along with that sample as it rides
the rhythm out.

These tracks are some of the most unique on Sound Signature records so far
IMHO. Really deep and aimed straight at the underground, trademark gritty
low-fi production. No one else I am hearing else is making tracks quite as
unique as this with a consistent high bar of quality. A rich broad sound and
enough changes and elements to keep it simple yet really complex at the same
time. So much mood and energy, it's thick. The sounds and samples are
timeless, you couldn't place a time or year on this one. But you can imagine
the city where it came from...

peace,
Matt MacQueen
