on getting Asbury Partners to meet its obligations rather than this
petulant act. What will people see when they come here? The truth.
They will see it with their own eyes no matter how much you try to
avoid it in the press. Now the press release.

PRESS RELEASE November 2, 2006 From Council member Ed Johnson

Today's Coaster Newspaper has run a front page story with comments
attributed to me that are incorrect. I do not call for, nor do I
endorse any call for Councilman Keady to resign his position and
leave town. My only comments with regard to this matter were to
refer all inquires to the UEZ Chairman and UEZ Director for specific
 details and further comment.

I do join in the principle concerns raised by the UEZ, other
Community Organizations and citizens with regard to the comments
that were made on an evening news cast by Councilman Keady. I
believe that they were indeed harmful to the forward progress and
coordinated effort that our business community has put forth to make
 Asbury Park a regional destination.

As a Councilman, I believe that we have a special responsibility to
protect and serve the positive interests of our community through
whatever challenges that we may encounter.

 Councilman Ed Johnson

100% agree with you appojo about that decision being worse than
anything else for AP. Far bigger effect here than anything else
that happened.

What this City could have been if the middle class wasn't gone for

[AsburyPark] Jim Keady Inconvenient Truth(s)

2006-11-03 Thread theshortsalepro
Keady's campaign included gathering information and listening to the
thoughts and concerns of the people of Asbury Park. Door by door.
Apparently, those people liked what he stood for enough to get him
elected. Keady was elected to represent the interest of the People.
Keady was not elected to be a cheerleader for redevelopment.

Is Jim a politician? Thankfully, not in the traditional mold. Look
where politics have gotten us? With few exceptions, our elected
officials are presented to us, and 'rented' by special interests.

I think more of our elected officials should take a page from the Jim
Keady handbook.

He might piss off the special interests... and those who shill for the
special interests, but the voters know their concerns have a voice.

[AsburyPark] Re: Asbury Partners' Vision For Asbury

2006-11-03 Thread wernerapnj
Gary,

I also noticed that several weeks ago. I sure hope the original
concept was scrapped. Remember the renderings presented by SOSH
Architects?

Lamp poles shaped like musical notes
Giant Neon martini glasses and shoes on roofs
Fish shaped signs jumping out of facades.
Bizzare color schemes (Oops - we already have that)

It was like Asbury Park on an Acid Trip.
It was described as Funky by supporters.

Tacky, bizzare, wierd, inappropriate, ugly all come to my mind.

Also keep in mind - it specifically states Residential Retail
meaning that the boardwalk is envisioned to serve the condo dwellers.
This was not designed to service external cash flow into the City.

I can only hope that those in control come to their senses and do an
appropriate and classy design for the beacfront. My fear is that the
developers/sub-developers are still calling the shots.

Werner

has but I was checking out the website for Asbury Partners today and
noticed that in their section for Vision For Asbury Park and the
section entitled Scope of the Redevelopment There are the original
drawings for the redevelopment under the title Renderings of
 Residential Retail Development.

Now the reason I bring this up is because of the four drawings the
pictures of Lake Village, Ocean Avenue, and North Shore all appear as
 they always have...

But the rendering for Entertainment has the words New Image To Come
when you click on the picture.

Has anyone heard anything about this? Are there new plans to be
unveiled or have they officially scrapped the original plans?

Attacking him because of the 200 Bloods comment is ridiculous. It may not be

our town. The
sick thing about all of this is that he's basically being asked to not tell the

hush, don't let the outside world know what a scary place AP is.
What a joke. Just disgusting.
And this is coming from Debbie at the Wonderbar...claiming it hurt their
business and it'll
prevent new biz from coming our way. Give me a break. Asburys legacy of
neglect, crime,
drugs etc. are the problem, not Jim Keady.
And speaking of the Wonder Bar...I worked there one night this past summer.
Most
unfriendly place i've ever been to. Debbie wasn't nice at all to me, and

[AsburyPark] Re: Jim Keady Inconvenient Truth(s)

2006-11-03 Thread Hinge
If there isn't a substantial gang problem in AP, then why are things like this
happening?
This is from Sept. 29 of this year;

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — Police have identified more than 200 gang members in
Neptune,
Red Bank, Freehold, Long Branch and Asbury Park, and another 200 in the county
jail,
many of whom are from Monmouth County, according to county Prosecutor Luis
Valentin.

Gang activity has also been detected in suburbs, including Howell, Matawan,
Manasquan
and Belmar, Valentin said Thursday at a conference on gangs.

The county's relative affluence does not make it immune from gangs, he said.
Among
those operating here are the Bloods, Crips, Almighty Latin King/Queen Nation,
Mexican
and Central American gangs, motorcycle gangs, and hate and extremist groups,
the
prosecutor said.

He did not want to alarm residents, but he wanted to educate them about the
perils and
presence of gang activity and make sure children know gang members should never
be
role models, Valentin said.

Thursday's conference at the county Police Academy was not open to the public,
but
reporters were invited in for the initial opening remarks. The conference was
one of the
quarterly gatherings the U.S. Attorney's Office in New Jersey plans to hold in
different parts
of the state so police can share information on gangs. The office conducted a
statewide
gang intelligence conference earlier this year.

About 160 law enforcement personnel from federal, state, county and local
departments
attended on Thursday. Represented locally were Aberdeen, Asbury Park, Belmar,
Bradley
Beach, Freehold, Hazlet, Highlands, Howell, Keyport, Lakewood, Little Silver,
Long Branch,
Manasquan, Matawan, Middletown, Neptune, Red Bank, Sea Bright, Union Beach,
West Long
Branch, and the prosecutor's offices from Monmouth and Ocean counties.

U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie said gangs are not just a law enforcement
problem,
but a socioeconomic problem. In cities such as Newark and Irvington, police are
fighting to
take streets back from gangs, he said. Federal laws can help in the battle, he
said.

In the federal corrections system, there is no parole, and criminals serve
their time in
prisons outside New Jersey, making it much more difficult for them to run their
criminal
enterprises from behind bars, Christie said. It also makes it tougher for
fellow gang
members to keep in contact with them, he said.

Christie's office has become known for prosecuting political corruption cases.
In the next
four years, Christie said, he also wants his office to be recognized for taking
on gangs.

We're ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with you, he told the officers.

Anti-gang initiatives

In July, Bloods members were reportedly arrested in Keansburg and Asbury Park.
In June,
22 members of Los Cafeteros and Sureno 13 were taken into custody in Red Bank,
and in
November, seven MS-13 members were arrested in Lakewood, authorities said at
the time.

Asbury Park and Lakewood were among a dozen or so municipalities chosen earlier
this
year to participate in Operation CeaseFire, a state anti-gang program.

Long Branch Public Safety Director William A. Richards said his department also
has a
number of anti-gang initiatives.

We don't have what I would characterize as a virulent gang problem, as
evidenced by
criminal activity associated with gangs, but it's certainly something we keep

The redevelopement gets blamed for that and it shouldn't. Houses in

Now rental single family homes on the westside are being sold tenants
are pushed out. It's a good thing that new people are moving in but
a bad thing that people are being pushed out. What do you do? Flood
the Beachfront with low income and affordable housing? or do you let
nature take it's course. With the Springwood Ave Red. taking shape
you may have affordable Housing. How many units can they build over
there?Enought to cover what's getting pushed out? Enought to handle
the relocation of the Beachfront? Do they want to live there?or is AP
opening the door for more lower income people moving in by going the
affordable route? when they do affordable housing it's open to the
State AP residents don't get first shot at it. You have to be very
careful. Maybe AP should have adopted the plan 2 years ago 60 Homes
10 being affordable and 70 affordable rental units with commerical to
follow. I believe the new plan will have commerical from the begining
is that good or bad? If you go with more affordable housing are their
developers out there who will take a chance and build with this
market. Look at Kara Homes. Thank God(JK's dad) that our 3 developers
are still moving along.

 Ocean Township is Asbury Park.

How many beers do you still owe me?

Fiorentino missed in that list - saw one this am

True, many gay folks ahe flipped out of AP (or still held) and
bought
over the bridge in Wanamassa, bringing back to life Wanamassa Point
Rd
(where I spent a few years), Interlaken and other lake fronts.
Wanamassa is making a cute comeback.

To make a town come back , you need less landlords and more resident
homeowners. As a landlord, I often look and wonder that if I didn't
own that house, what would someone else do with it? Keep it as is,
kock it down, restore it etc etc.? Nothing better for a town then
 single family res.

Back to OT and AP - AP was OT:
The original boundaries of the Township stretched from the
Shrewsbury
River to the southern tip of Avon-by-the-Sea.

I thought you wanted the Weldon/AP/OT link...

 That's 5.

If there isn't a substantial gang problem in AP, then why are things
like this happening?
 This is from Sept. 29 of this year;

FREEHOLD TOWNSHIP — Police have identified more than 200 gang
members in Neptune,
Red Bank, Freehold, Long Branch and Asbury Park, and another 200 in
the county jail,
many of whom are from Monmouth County, according to county
Prosecutor Luis Valentin.

Gang activity has also been detected in suburbs, including Howell,
Matawan, Manasquan
and Belmar, Valentin said Thursday at a conference on gangs.

The county's relative affluence does not make it immune from gangs,
he said. Among
those operating here are the Bloods, Crips, Almighty Latin
King/Queen Nation, Mexican
and Central American gangs, motorcycle gangs, and hate and
extremist groups, the
 prosecutor said.

He did not want to alarm residents, but he wanted to educate them
about the perils and
presence of gang activity and make sure children know gang members
should never be
 role models, Valentin said.

Thursday's conference at the county Police Academy was not open to
the public, but
reporters were invited in for the initial opening remarks. The
conference was one of the
quarterly gatherings the U.S. Attorney's Office in New Jersey plans
to hold in different parts
of the state so police can share information on gangs. The office
conducted a statewide
gang intelligence conference earlier this year.

About 160 law enforcement personnel from federal, state, county and
local departments
attended on Thursday. Represented locally were Aberdeen, Asbury
Park, Belmar, Bradley
Beach, Freehold, Hazlet, Highlands, Howell, Keyport, Lakewood,
Little Silver, Long Branch,
Manasquan, Matawan, Middletown, Neptune, Red Bank, Sea Bright,
Union Beach, West Long
Branch, and the prosecutor's offices from Monmouth and Ocean
counties.

U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Christie said gangs are not just a law
enforcement problem,
but a socioeconomic problem. In cities such as Newark and
Irvington, police are fighting to
take streets back from gangs, he said. Federal laws can help in the
battle, he said.

In the federal corrections system, there is no parole, and
criminals serve their time in
prisons outside New Jersey, making it much more difficult for them
to run their criminal
enterprises from behind bars, Christie said. It also makes it
tougher for fellow gang
members to keep in contact with them, he said.

Christie's office has become known for prosecuting political
corruption cases. In the next
four years, Christie said, he also wants his office to be
recognized for taking on gangs.

We're ready to stand shoulder to shoulder with you, he told the
officers.

 Anti-gang initiatives

In July, Bloods members were reportedly arrested in Keansburg and
Asbury Park. In June,
22 members of Los Cafeteros and Sureno 13 were taken into custody
in Red Bank, and in
November, seven MS-13 members were arrested in Lakewood,
authorities said at the time.

Asbury Park and Lakewood were among a dozen or so municipalities
chosen earlier this
year to participate in Operation CeaseFire, a state anti-gang
program.

Long Branch Public Safety Director William A. Richards said his
department also has a
 number of anti-gang initiatives.

We don't have what I would characterize as a virulent gang
problem, as evidenced by
criminal activity associated with gangs, but it's certainly
something we keep an eye on, he
 said.

Thursday's event was co-sponsored by the Monmouth County
Prosecutor's Office, the
Middle Atlantic-Great Lakes Organized Crime Law Enforcement Network

[AsburyPark] AP Business and Gangs

2006-11-03 Thread oakdorf
The first lesson of starting a business (other then a business plan)
Location. Location Location.
I've said it before, I recall meeting with the SBA guys from
Brookdale's outreach program years ago. Location. How much do you
want to make a year vs. what else can you be doing?

Businesses in AP have more power behind them say then a biz in
Bradley beach. You have marketing $ via the UEZ, chamber and whetever
else flows through. Right now, you need more foot traffic during the
day - more business. Siatrs project will hopefully bring more tenants
in and businesses. You need Steinbach building done, with tenants.
You need Wesley Grove to hopefulyl get some yr rounders. Then the
Griffin. There is loads of potential. Then you DO need the continued
efforts of the police to control the problems and there are problems.
Maybe some of the UEZ $ should go to developing something along the
western side of AP Ave, so when you officially enter the city from
Asbury Ave, it doesn't look like shit. Start coming off exit 102.

You can't blast keady for his comment. By AP standards, he's wrong -
because he spoke his mind and didn't back down. Give him some more
credit for not telling them to go f themselves when he was asked to
read the letter. He read it. So?

from a teacher in the neptune high school who told the story of homw
many kids turned up their colors under their shirts at the end of
the dauy last week. Might be real gang members or just kids
who need to belong. It only takes one to screw up the lives of many.

So if there are 10 gang members, 99 or 201 it doesn't matter. So the
UEZ should keep doing what they do, bring people to AP and allocate
the money the best it can to aid in the overall development of the
infrastructure.

The city had and still has plenty of opportunity to build affordable

Look at long branch, they managed to knock down low income housing

[AsburyPark] SOAP Concert

2006-11-03 Thread Fred
Surprised Gary didn't Post this.

THE CREATORS OF S.O.A.P. RETURN TO ASBURY
Print ArticleEmail This ArticleRespond To This Article

by Gary Wien

This December, Asbury Park will pay a long overdue tribute to the
creators of the Asbury musical sound. Many of the creators will take
part in a once in a lifetime concert on December 9th at the Stone
Pony and a permanent monument will be placed on the boardwalk
containing the names of the musicians and performers that took the
music to its limit by pushing the envelope and digging deeper to
change the sound of Rock Roll forever. We recently emailed Doc
Holiday to talk about the show and monument.

When and how did the idea for the monument come about?
Actually it happened when I was on a break from a recording session
in Nashville having lunch with Garry Tallent. We began talking about
the old days in Asbury, and I had mentioned in passing to Garry that
it was a shame that all the original guys that were working that
scene in the 60's were all but forgotten about in the mist of the
Bruce Explosion that happened in the 70's and how someone should
really take note of the impact those guys had on the development of
that sound. Garry agreed and with that the conversation went on to
other subjects. Two days later I was driving back to my recording
studio in Virginia and kept thinking about that thought of those
originators lost in the shuffle, and somewhere around 3 in the
morning in the middle of the Smokey Mountains on an interstate
highway, I thought, I'm gonna see if there's interest in doing some
sort of the tribute to those players from the Jersey Shore in the
60's. It was just supposed to be a little get together with some of
the original guys who were still alive to meet again and play some
music, That was it!

Well I thought, why not have a little jam session at the Stone Pony
in Asbury, after all it all began in Asbury 45 years ago, so that
made sense. So I had one of my staff call the Stone Pony and suggest
the idea to them to see if was even possible. Well in short Caroline
at the Stone Pony was so supportive of the idea, that it now seem
like it may be possible, so with her help we decided to put
this Little Jam together. But as I got into it, I realized that
there were more people than just a few who were responsible for the
creation of The Sound Of Asbury Park in the 60's. And why should they
be left out of this, after all they were the true creators of that
sound. We then put the word out to see how many of those original
players were in fact still alive and see if there would be interest
in joining in on this. The response was overwhelming to say the
least, names that I had not even though about started to surface and
the support of the get together was fantastic, everyone want a part
of it! Then the next step came when I thought These guys had been
forgotten about for so long, Let's go the extra mile and have a
monument for the Creators Of SOAP, with all the original players
names on it and see if we can get it erected on the boardwalk so
everyone will always remember the players that worked night after
night on the Jersey Shore and pushed the musical envelope to create a
sound of music that history would look back on and remember how it
changed rock roll forever.

Where will the monument be placed?
On the boardwalk next to The Convention Hall.

What was the reaction by Asbury Park towards the monument? Did you
have any trouble securing the location for the monument?
The city went way beyond the call of duty on this one, The city
manager Terry Reidy, and deputy mayor Jimmy Burno, went to bat on
this one and got it done period. I think they both realized the
importance of finally recognizing this contribution to music history
and the importance of it actually being created in Asbury Park along
with the people who created it, and their (Reidy, Bruno) personal
commitment to bring back Asbury Park to its former heyday, that this
was an important and first step that needed to be taken to recognize
the musical history of Asbury Park, and that history, the people who
wrote it and the times that were had during that era should never be
forgotten.

Why do you think it is important to remember Asbury Park's music
scene?
The sound, it's a blend of Rock, Pop, Doo Wop, Blues, Jazz, RB and
somehow those early players put all those ingredients together,
That's what made the sound of Asbury Park, that is what the true SOAP
is all about.

In your opinion, is the history of Asbury Park's music important on a
national level as well?
National Level??? Try worldwide!!! Thanks to guys like Springsteen
who took those roots to a worldwide level, the sound of Rock Roll
will never be the same. Bruce Springsteen alone took that early sound
of Asbury, he pushed the musical envelope, he dug deeper in the
music, and when he had it right he showed it to the world. And the
world of music has

Greetings from Long Branch:

I find it rather interesting how the business community can now beat up
Mr. Keady, because he had the courage to admit there is a gang
prescence in Asbury.

The politicians of the Culture of Corruption deny the negetives and
create unfounded positives, all in a manner of promotion of an agenda.

What if - people came to Asbury under the false impression there is no
violence problem there, hiding facts relevent to what is going on in a
given community could open a community up to liability. We have seen
that in times pasted when a community hides health and public related
issues. (ie: cancer clusters, electro magnetic fallout, brown fields
etc)

It was extremely courageous of Keady to admit a problem. Instead of
bashing him, you all should be working on controlling addition violent
episodes there.

Before anyone dare assail him for his concern and opinion of the gang
violence in Asbury Park, they should produce evidence that he is wrong
or shut up. Having no basis of FACT for demanding his resignation and
relocation out of town - those who make such a demand should be
looking to relocate themselves.

Speaking the truth is a seldom occurence in New Jersey. We should
support and rally to those in elected office who dare to do so.

Now get out those rosaries and ask the beads to protect you from my
opinion on even this matter.

LOL

Keady was not elected to be a cheerleader for redevelopment.

Is Jim a politician? Thankfully, not in the traditional mold. Look

I think more of our elected officials should take a page from the Jim

My real name is Jack, but for years i've been known as Hinge (long story)

BTW, the concert sold out several weeks ago. The dedication for the monument is expected to get a huge crowd as well.

2006-11-03 Thread Hinge
From Wikipedia:
Goombah (sometimes Goomba) is a slang term regional to the New York area used
to
describe an Italian-American. It can be mildly derogatory, but not on the same
level as
dago, guinea or wop.
This slang term probably originates from the Italian word compare (or the
Sicilian cognate,
cumpari, both akin to Spanish compadre), which was already (and still is)
used in south
Italy abbreviated in compa' and literally means friend and it is used
colloquially mainly
to address people living in the same town. This, changed through the
Italo-American
tendency to substitute c's for g's and p's for b's in colloquial speech, yields
goombah.
Steve Schirripa, who became famous playing Bobby Baccalieri on the HBO TV
series The
Sopranos, introduced the term to a national audience by publishing a series of
books
starting with A Goomba's Guide to Life (ISBN 1-4000-4639-4). It appears in
popular
fiction at least as early as Mario Puzo's The Godfather (1969), in which the
character Jack
Woltz refers to guinea Mafia goombahs.

[AsburyPark] I Ask Loffredo and Bruno To Defend Our Heritage

2006-11-03 Thread dfsavgny
Dear Deputy Mayor Bruno and Councilman Loffredo,

I am contacting both of you because I know that you are proud
Italian-Americans. I have received my weekly email blast from Tom
Gilmour about upcoming events in Asbury Park this week. I am
excerpting the section below from that email which I believe you
will find offensive as Italian-Americans.

The Paramount Theatre presents Gumba Night on Saturday with back-
to-back showings of The Godfather and The Godfather II.

Firstly, Tom spelled GOOMBAH incorrectly. If our heritage is going
to be insulted the least that could be done is to get the spelling
of the ethnic slur correct.

Secondly, while the three of us know that GOOMBAH (or alternately
GOOMBA) originates in our culture as a term of endearment, in common
usage by non-Italian-Americans it is considered derogatory. Below I
have excerpted the listing for GOOMBAH from Wikipedia.

Goombah (sometimes Goomba) is a slang term regional to the New York
area used to describe an Italian-American. It can be mildly
derogatory, but not on the same level as dago, guinea or wop.

This slang term probably originates from the Italian word compare
(or the Sicilian cognate, cumpari, both akin to Spanish compadre),
which was already (and still is) used in south Italy abbreviated
in compa' and literally means friend and it is used colloquially
mainly to address people living in the same town. This, changed
through the Italo-American tendency to substitute c's for g's and
p's for b's in colloquial speech, yields goombah.

Steve Schirripa, who became famous playing Bobby Baccalieri on the
HBO TV series The Sopranos, introduced the term to a national
audience by publishing a series of books starting with A Goomba's
Guide to Life (ISBN 1-4000-4639-4). It appears in popular fiction at
least as early as Mario Puzo's The Godfather (1969), in which the
character Jack Woltz refers to guinea Mafia goombahs.

Now it may be that Gumba Night did not originate with Tom Gilmour
but was passed on from the people at the Paramount. That would still
not excuse the fact that an official communication from the City of
Asbury Park contains an ethnic slur. I have no idea how many people
receive Tom's email blast, but I hear rumors that there may be
rioting in Ocean Township this weekend over this matter. If the Sons
of Italy get wind of this the least of our problems will be the
purported handful of Bloods members in our fair city.

Also, this slap at our heritage comes on the heels of the Columbus
Day controversy. What is an Italian-American to do? Is there no safe
refuge for us? My grandparents Vito and Isabella are probably
rolling in their graves at this very moment! Jesu Cristo aiuto me!

Both of you fine Italian-Americans vociferously defended out
collective ancestry last month in the above episode. I expect no
less in the current matter (although I do not expect anyone to dress
up in costumes this time). Please investigate this matter. I look
forward to an official retraction and apology to all Italian-
Americans from the City and Asbury Partners if they too are
responsible for this slur. Someday soon, hopefully, us Italian-
Americans too will ba able to walk as equals in this community.

The topic from my first post was about Pallone turning down 8
invitations in a row to help Asbury kids, but has come here 2
years
in a row to see Barney Frank (I have a problem with that - too bad
you don't). That's a knock against Pallone, not Barney Frank.

The imagry I used of Pallone kissing Barney's ring you have
already
picked up on as metaphorical for kissing the Pope's ring. Using
that
very common literary device of metaphor, elevating Barney Frank to
the status of the Pope in Pallone's mind while he ignores Asbury
children is to highlight his lack of priorites. That is in
furtherance of the topic - Pallone ignore's Asbury children. Again
 nothing against Barney Frank there.

You asked where I thought Barney could wear his ring that would
make
me shudder at the thought of a kiss there. I did answer - I told
you people today wear rings in odd place: lip, nostril, ears. I'll

You are getting upset because I did answer every question.

I did answer - I told
you people today wear rings in odd

[AsburyPark] Re: I Ask Loffredo and Bruno To Defend Our Heritage

2006-11-03 Thread Fred
--- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, dfsavgny [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:

I've been called a lot worse.

I think goomba night will atract more people to AP than 200 Blood
Gang Members reside in AP.

GOOMBA) originates in our culture as a term of endearment, in
common
usage by non-Italian-Americans it is considered derogatory. Below I
have excerpted the listing for GOOMBAH from Wikipedia.

Goombah (sometimes Goomba) is a slang term regional to the New York
area used to describe an Italian-American. It can be mildly
derogatory, but not on the same level as dago, guinea or wop.

This slang term probably originates from the Italian word compare
(or the Sicilian cognate, cumpari, both akin to Spanish
compadre),
which was already (and still is) used in south Italy abbreviated
in compa' and literally means friend and it is used
colloquially
mainly to address people living in the same town.

It appears in popular fiction
at
least as early as Mario Puzo's The Godfather (1969), in which the
character Jack Woltz refers to guinea Mafia goombahs.

Now it may be that Gumba Night did not originate with Tom Gilmour
but was passed on from the people at the Paramount. That would
still
not excuse the fact that an official communication from the City of
Asbury Park contains an ethnic slur. I have no idea how many people
receive Tom's email blast, but I hear rumors that there may be
rioting in Ocean Township this weekend over this matter. If the
Sons
of Italy get wind of this the least of our problems will be the
purported handful of Bloods members in our fair city.

Also, this slap at our heritage comes on the heels of the Columbus
Day controversy. What is an Italian-American to do? Is there no
safe
refuge for us? My grandparents Vito and Isabella are probably
rolling in their graves at this very moment! Jesu Cristo aiuto me!

Both of you fine Italian-Americans vociferously defended out
collective ancestry last month in the above episode. I expect no
less in the current matter (although I do not expect anyone to
dress
up in costumes this time). Please investigate this matter. I look
forward to an official retraction and apology to all Italian-
Americans from the City and Asbury Partners if they too are
responsible for this slur. Someday soon, hopefully, us Italian-
Americans too will ba able to walk as equals in this community.

This [from "compare"] is first found in the mid 1950s, and seems to

The Martha Raye Show.

Find out who titled it "Gumba Night" and
let them have it here and everywhere. Your wrath must fall

  whoever is responsible,

Haven't we had enough of his "here, there and everywhere" wrath coming out
of the woodwork?

(The second, and most familiar, sense is 'a mafia boss. The
first known use of this sense is inThe Godfather: "I don't care how
many guinea Mafia goombahs come out of the woodwork." )

Even if it came originally from
Partners, don't you think its irresponsible for the City to be repeating it?
If they were showing SHAFT and MANDINGO should it be called that horrible "N"
  word Night?

Although Tommy is "A Pitbull on the Pantleg of Opportunity," he isNOT
an equal opportunity critic.

Gee, this right after some councilman
ruined Columbus Day for us. What's an Italian-American to do?

This"compare will continue to speak up ("It's America!") when the
goombahs give the rest of us a bad name.

Re: [AsburyPark] Re: Jim Keady Inconvenient Truth(s)

2006-11-03 Thread Allan Peterson

I disagree. He should not have given out that number unless there are facts to back up. The town is too small in size and 200 would represent a rather large percentage meaning that gang crime is out of control. People have risked everything to create businesses, fix homes etc. This do-gooder must realize his words can cause damage.

I am sure gangs exist but 200 members? Well organized? If that was the case then he should show his facts. I don't think people have a problem with him saying that gang members reside in town. It is when he goes on a new broadcast and starts ramblining numbers. Why? So he can show he is going to save the town with basketball programs? More homeless shelters? Rent control? All his intentions are good just not for ocean front property.

It may not be the exact number, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if there were that many of them in our town. The sick thing about all of this is that he's basically being asked to not tell the truth...hush hush, don't let the outside world know what a scary place AP is.What a joke. Just disgusting. And this is coming from Debbie at the Wonderbar... claiming it hurt their business and it'll prevent new biz from coming our way. Give me a break. Asburys legacy of neglect, crime, drugs etc. are the problem, not Jim Keady. And speaking of the Wonder Bar...I worked there one night this past summer. Most unfriendly place i've ever been to. Legislators take steps to combat gangs
Posted by the Asbury Park Press on 05/19/06

GANNETT STATE BUREAU

TRENTON — Lawmakers stepped up the war on street gangs Thursday,
advancing a raft of measures they hope might restore calm.

One in particular said gangland defendants had to prove bail money
comes from legitimate sources, erasing the oft-repeated parlay in
which a gang member bails out another with cash — of uncertain
sources — stuffed into a brown paper bag.

The steps also include special gun courts, shielding the identities
of victims and lawyers and confiscating vehicles of people nabbed
with illegal weapons.

Where there's drugs, there's gangs, said Assemblyman Peter Barnes,
D-Middlesex, chairman of the Assembly Law and Public Safety
Committee.

Barnes sat in front of a state map that showed gang presence
spreading across the state from urban centers to suburbs in
Monmouth, Camden and Middlesex counties, across the Interstate 78
corridor to Warren County and in pockets around southern New Jersey.

Heck, they're in Princeton, said Assemblyman Reed Gusciora, D-
Mercer.

It is a package of triage legislation, said Assemblywoman Bonnie
Watson Coleman, D-Mercer, where late-March gang battles on Trenton
streets killed six people, including a 7-year-old girl and two
bystanders, all in a 24-hour period.

First Assistant Attorney General Anne Milgram urged passage of the
package, saying all major violent gangs are present in New Jersey,
from South Jersey bikers to West Coast street groups that have
expanded east.

She mentioned gangs in Asbury Park, Lakewood, Camden, Vineland and
Trenton.

Division of Criminal Justice
Gregory A. Paw, Director

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

State Police Lead Team of 500 Officers to
Decapitate Most Violent Set of Bloods Street Gang

West Trenton, NJ - Early this morning in locations throughout New
Jersey, the State Police's Intelligence Section launched raids
against the infamous Nine Trey Gangsters street gang targeting 96
gang members and affiliated persons. Dubbed Operation Nine
Connect, today's actions are the culmination of an 11-month joint
investigation by the Division of State Police and the Division of
Criminal Justice aimed at disabling this violent group believed to
be responsible for more violent crime than any other street gang.
Arrests continued throughout the morning in locations across the
state. As of the printing of this release, more than 60 persons had
been arrested with further arrests expected over the coming weeks.

Teams of troopers and officers from 31 agencies in 7 counties
arrested their quarry and executed more than 15 search warrants to
recover additional evidence of crimes. During the operation,
approximately 500 law enforcement officers worked in this
cooperative effort. Charges ranged from 1 st degree Racketeering to
extortion, money laundering, organized criminal gambling,
distribution of CDS (drugs), weapons charges, and conspiracy to
commit these crimes. Intelligence has revealed that Nine Trey
members have been responsible for a number of murders and untold
numbers of drive by shootings.

During the execution of arrest and search warrants today, several
handguns were recovered and quantities of drugs were seized in each
of the three regions. Arrest teams processed subjects in the closest
of three regional State Police headquarter buildings in Buena
(Atlantic), Hamilton (Mercer), and Totowa (Passaic). Each regional
location was staffed with Deputy Attorneys General to provide legal
guidance throughout the operation. From there, the gang members and
affiliates were bussed to Mercer County Jail, where by prior
agreement, they were all lodged pending arraignments over the next
few days.

Our aim in this investigation was, quite simply, to put an end to
this extremely violent set of the Bloods street gang in New Jersey,
said Attorney General Farber. We have successfully executed one of
the most significant and large-scale gang takedowns in the history
of law enforcement in our state.

In this operation, the State Police are indeed striking at the root
of evil rather than hacking at its branches, said Colonel Rick
Fuentes, Superintendent of the New Jersey State Police. This type
of intelligence-led policing reduces crime by eliminating it at the
source.

Operation Nine Connect is the first major project of the realignment
of the investigative resources in the State Police that occurred in
2005. Lt. Colonel Frank Rodgers, Deputy Superintendent of the
Investigations Branch initiated these changes to infuse intelligence-
based policing into the architecture of the agency. Intelligence
analysts worked through the results of the Statewide Gang Survey and
pored over crime data to come up with the most critical threat to
safety in New Jersey.

We found the Nine Trey set of the Bloods were responsible for more
violence and crime than any other source at this time, said LTC
Rodgers. By concentrating our enforcement on the source of the
problem, we will have an impact on the quality of life for our
citizens.

We took down almost the entire leadership of the Nine Trey set,
added Rodgers. We are very satisfied with the results of Operation
Nine Connect. The State Police gang analysts estimate the strength
of this set to be between 250 and 275 members in New Jersey.

This is what we have in store for the leaders of New Jersey's
violent street gangs, said Division of Criminal Justice Director
Gregory A. Paw. We will be steadfast in our efforts to arrest and
prosecute those responsible for the gunfire that is ravaging many of
our communities.

Under the new structure, Regional Intelligence Groups (RIG) contain
both analysts and intelligence officers responsible for interpreting
the criminal environment within each bureau's specific area of
responsibility. They provide strategic and tactical intelligence
products that influence how best to allocate resources.

The Nine Trey Gangster are located throughout New Jersey, with
strong networks located in the cities of Newark, Paterson, Atlantic
City, Trenton, Asbury Park, Keansburg, and
Bridgeton/Millville/Vineland (BMV are run as a single entity by the
bloods hierarchy).

The name Operation Nine Connect was derived from the gangs
organized hierarchy that moved

Well, while I agree with you on putting out a number without checking the
facts...one
indisputable fact is that we do have gangs in our city. Doesn't matter if there
are 20
members, or 200. Either can cause alot of bad things to happen, and no matter
how many
are physically here at one time, they are connected to people in other
communities. So,
let's say there are 20 bloods in AP, another 20 in Neptune, and 20 more in
Lakewood.
Don't you realize that gangs are big in the drug biz, and members seek out
others in all of
these towns to do business?
Are you for sugar coating the truth to attract new business's?
Do you think it's right to hide the facts from prospective new residents, or
business's that
might consider moving to AP? I don't. Gangs and crime are a fact of life here.
That's the
real issue, and I think argueing about public opinion about our town is
pointless. AP has
had a bad reputation for 30 years, maybe more.

While I do not agree with everything that is stated in the article,
I can certainly empathize with the fears and frustrations of those
that were quoted in the article. I share some of those
frustrations, and know that many others in town who did not have the
opportunity to express themselves in print do as well.

I support Asbury Park and am proud to live here and serve on the
city UEZ Board, but I cannot look at life in Asbury through rose-
colored glasses. We DO have an enormous crime and drug problem,
that the city cannot seem to get the upper hand on. We DO have an
enormous and apparant split between the haves and the have
not's. We DO have, once again, what seem to be a lot of promises
regarding redevelopment but nothing tangible that the average
citizen can see, or touch, or proudly point out to their friends and
take heart in. We have promised timetables for redevelopment that
are not being adhered to; and in fact are being stretched to the
point of ridiculousness. All of these points were very fairly
presented in the NY Times article.

Granted, some of the people interviewed for the article are the
usual naysayers that we all must deal with in today's Asbury, and
I understand fully that there are many behind-the-scenes
technicalities that must first be addressed, but for just a moment,
consider how all of this must appear to Mr. and Mrs. Joe Resident,
who have no access to the negotiations going on and may still have a
bad taste left in their mouths from previous efforts and promises
gone bad. A point to consider: if the average resident or visitor
could see progress being made, could see something, ANYTHING,
happeningpeople would not have to wonder aloud about our city's
future in the New York Times.

The sad thing is that many of the town officials as well as people in the town (including on this board) think it's better for the town for nobody on the outside world to know about the crime. It's almost like they spend more time concealing the statistics than tackling the problems. It's kind of like the war in Iraq. Almost everyone agrees that it's going wrong but if you honestly try to talk about it and propose changes they call you unpatriotic and against the troops. In Asbury Park, they try to bury you if you discuss crime because they think you're against the cops.

I agree. They helped me out one time when my car broke down in town and they're still one of the few beach towns that haven't harassed me for no apparent reason. Most of the local areas try so hard to get ticket money during the summer it isn't even funny.

However, there is a difference between criticizing the police and talking about the crime problem and that's where I think people are wrong to ignore the situation.

[AsburyPark] Dear Point Miss-ers..........

2006-11-03 Thread justifiedright
After reading these posts about Mr. Keady and hearing some parts of
our lovely radio host refering to it last night, I must say many are
missing the point.

ABC News was here to cover - shootings. The report was going to be
bad. No one could do any kind of covering, ignoring or any other
word you choose, to make the bad report look, in the final analysis,
postive. No one is suggesting Keady had the power to do that.

Although you must tell the truth, you don't have to make the
situation look worse than it is. I agree Keady shouldn't tell
falsehoods to make us look good, but certainly telling a falsehood
to make us look worse than we are is bad too. That's what he did
wrong.

The viewers were already getting the confirmed story that something
scary was happening here. A councilman's job would be to then tell
the rest of the truth - that are police department is revamped, the
county is helping and we are working hard against it.

I hope all of you screaming for truth will admit telling the whole
truth is more fair and makes us look better, so it is truthful and
good for AP.

Keady has not yet realized he is no longer some guy with a picket
sign rallying against the man. As a public official, his words
carry weight now. He has a duty to you and me to make sure the
picture of Asbury Park to a tri-state TV audience is a balanced one.

We are rarely on TV. For him to use a false fact to make us look
worse than we are was what he did wrong.

See you just proved my point. I was not criticizing the police nor did I say they weren't doing their job.

There are some problems that need to be discussed BECAUSE they are so big. Yet you just pointed out that they were doing their job and insinuated I suggested they weren't. That's the problem. You can talk about the problem without saying its the fault of the police but people just don't listen to what you're saying when you try.

To say 200 in AP is false.

Look at the study I posted. There are 17,000 gang members (at
minimum) in the state. I think it said nearly 5,000 were Bloods. The
survey also admits that this is based on reporting police estimates
which are acknowledged to only estimate the tip of the iceberg.
Let's see what APPD reported in 2004. Remember that heroin bust in
Newark a couple of months ago? It was a Bloods gang that had ties to
AP. I would not be surprised if there were 200 members here. But say
its 100 or 50, or 300+, what's the difference? If Keady even had an
absolute basis for his numbers he would still be crucified.

I want you to vent your anger here at GUMBA Night. I want Loffredo

I have a relative working the M County courts PTI program. They have
their share of good old white collar crimers (Drs, Lawyers and
everyday people) - some with the same problems - or most - drugs. So
you have users and dealers. Like one story I was told - I don't use,
just sell.
nice guy right? Do away with PTI (pre-trial-intervention) and make
more room in jail. That to me is like one free ride in most cases.

Then there are many, many programs that users get to get into - once
they get caught and face jail - or the option of PTI (if granted).

I'll leave it to the lawyer or 2 on this sboard to comment. (Quite a
few FAIL the PTI program).

Question, since Jim's comment, can someone show a real cause and effect?
Did Jim' interview cause people not to eat or shop in downtown?
Permantely or just for last week? If that were the case, no one would
be back in NYC since 9/11. Build a business (businesses) that people
want and need throughout the day.
g
What the UEZ should begin planning is how to capitalize on the outlet
center (highend) that will open within the next 2 years at exit 100.
And there is another 30 acres right there that will be sold, plus
another 130 on the west side that will some day go. You have a new
hotel opening at Jumping Brook, more food joints. You'll have more
opportunity to draw traffic downtown. Now you jsut have to figure out
how to draw them in another 5 miles. It's called the beachfront and
Cookman Ave. To do so, you have open Asbury Ave and work with Neptune
to do so.

[AsburyPark] Re: Jim Keady Inconvenient Truth(s)

2006-11-03 Thread justifiedright
Jack it is a matter of venue (triState area) and quantity (one
sentence).

I'll give you 3 sentences. Paint me a balanced picture of Asbury
Park (understanding you are a community leader so your words have
the imprematur of authority and a duty to us all)

What do you come up with.

That being said...don't you think that AP having 200 gang members

I still think that focusing on this is a waste of time. It's the
underlying problem thats the
 problem.
Oh...and all the talk about bad publicity making people or
business's not want to come

What a concept, thinking that this most recent incident is the
only bad PR AP has received.
What about the past 30 yrs?

2006-11-03 Thread Kevin Brown
As per the State police the State's gang population is 17,000. This
number is gang members and excludes wanna bees. This and more
information was aired tonight on NJN News.

I think some people need to apologise to Jim Keady. Even though he is a

[AsburyPark] Shock Meeting Proposal

2006-11-03 Thread Kevin Brown
You want to know how many real gang members in Asbury Park you have?

You arrange for the Baronette Theatre to show the Lord's of Flatbush

You call an absolute TRUCE and provide sincere promises that there
will be no police retaliation.

You have discreet and plain clothes police presence.

You have a panel of discreet citizens acting as hosts.

You ask they come without weapons and you gaurantee their safety.

You drop flyers one week out all over the place and do it in Spanish
so you get the Latin Kings Queens and MS# aware.

You provide the free showing of the movie. You call it Night of
Peace.

If you do this you will be shocked at actually how many there are
roaming the streets of Asbury.

I would even be brave enough to try to open a dialogue and invite The
Gaurdian angels to speak.

2006-11-03 Thread charlie leonard

phase 2, although its not where the sign of phase 2 is located. west upward on cookman ave, are they planned to be the same as the cookmanside units that are already done? did anyone else notice they faux aged a few buildings on the top floor facing west on cookman. there is a "blocked out window" with the upper arch remaining. i see on the east side, top floor. they only gave one window a top transim (sp) window, where the window next to it "should" have had one to balance things out. at least they attempted to give the building a not so cookie cutter look. right now, it looks too fake, but in a few years, it may even give the illusion that it wasnt done intentonally. i wonder if they added in these 2 things last minute, becuase rumors of their "all looking the same" were heard. thats what im guessing. i dont remember seeing these 2 things in any of the drawings. ill take a picture tomorrow,
or sunday, if some arnt sure what im reffering to. charlie

[AsburyPark] lake ave cut off

2006-11-03 Thread charlie leonard

the fact that lake ave got cut off is bad, it doesnt even look right. however, to make a situation that is already done, and most likely not be changed back to the way it was, lets look at it from a positive side. instead of what seems to be the norm to bash something for all its worth (which does nothing, except make people mad, mad at something they can not fix) from looking at everything, in my eyes, the reason the new "palace drive" is made narrow, is because thats the location where a new hotel would be. wouldnt it be neat if that road went through the hotel, under an arch in the building of some sort?. in my head, thats what i see happening, will it happen, who knows. but its a damn good idea!! if you were heading down lake ave, passing through wesely grove units, youd be heading smack into the hotel complex. giving the reason for the narrow road. you dont want a large road, making driving faster easier
when your near a hotel of some sort. dont get me wrong though, sure id like to see lake ave kept open, connecting with ocean ave. however, thats not how it is. and its a done deal pretty much, right? so lets try to think of the best things this road closure can do, not everything thats bad with it. charlie

[AsburyPark] sidewalks

2006-11-03 Thread charlie leonard

the sidewalks on ocean ave are not smaller then they were, at least not everywhere. the sidewalks behind the empress hotel. before, werent they somewhat small, with grass between the walk and road?? now the sidewalk goes straight to the road, eliminating the grassy area once before, with conrete blocks. if anything, isnt that added space? im having a hard time picturing all the sidewalks on ocean ave, its been a while since things were calm, with no construction. i had everything memorized at one time though. the east side of ocean ave is cut back a lot though, thats true. the area around theberkley hote, the building is close to poping out into the street! also, cough cough, it appears the new road and curb height in the newly curbed ocean ave lines up fine with the convention hall. go figure.

The No Land Grab and associated sites had alot of my stuff on there
with regard to the battle for Jets Stadium. Dan Goldstein is the guy
trying to hold up Atlantic Yards. He claims he will not sell out and I
don't he will. The latest lawsuit they filed will hold up things for a
while, but they will not win. There's a couple of more taking projects
in Downtown Bklyn that have been on the boards for a while but the city
is holding back. NY is a little freer than NJ to take property but the
awards are much fairer in NY, which are all by bench trials. I would
like to think because I represent a lot of property owners;)

In reality, I think there is less politics in the courts in NYC. They
are a den of vipers here with developers.

It's not like it is news.Legislators take steps to combat gangsPosted by the Asbury Park Press on 05/19/06BY TOM BALDWINGANNETT STATE BUREAUTRENTON — Lawmakers stepped up the war on street gangs Thursday, advancing a raft of measures they hope might restore calm. One in particular said gangland defendants
had to prove bail money comes from legitimate sources, erasing the oft-repeated parlay in which a gang member bails out another with cash — of uncertain sources — stuffed into a brown paper bag.The steps also include special gun courts, shielding the identities of victims and lawyers and confiscating vehicles of people nabbed with illegal weapons."Where there's drugs, there's gangs," said Assemblyman Peter Barnes, D-Middlesex, chairman of the Assembly Law and Public Safety Committee.Barnes sat in front of a state map that showed gang presence spreading across the state from urban centers to suburbs in Monmouth, Camden and Middlesex counties, across the Interstate 78 corridor to Warren County and in pockets around southern New Jersey."Heck, they're in Princeton," said Assemblyman Reed Gusciora, D-Mercer."It is a package of triage legislation, " said Assemblywoman Bonnie Watson

I am not for sugar coating the truth but I am for the truth. If Larry Fishman went on the news and say the development is well underway how many posts would be on this board bitching and moaning? Yes there are buildings going up but not 200.

I am well aware that gangs are all over. That is not my issue or the issue the UZE, Coaster etc the issue is why did he say 200 on tv?

Well, while I agree with you on putting out a number without checking the facts...one indisputable fact is that we do have gangs in our city. Doesn't matter if there are 20 members, or 200. Either can cause alot of bad things to happen, and no matter how many are physically here at one time, they are connected to people in other communities. So, let's say there are 20 bloods in AP, another 20 in Neptune, and 20 more in Lakewood. Don't you realize that gangs are big in the drug biz, and members seek out others in all of these towns to do business? Are you for sugar coating the truth to attract new business's?Do you think it's right to hide the facts from prospective new residents, or business's that might consider moving to AP? I don't. Gangs and crime are a fact of life here. That's the real issue, and I think argueing about public opinion about our town is pointless. AP has had a bad reputation for 30 years, maybe more.

You should be demanding the truth and for him to state his sources. Not lame excuses

I bet at this moment he (JK)is positing to Wikipedia over and over so he can then post the result as justification..

Maybe he is not ready yet to reveal his sources. Be that as it may, didn't that one study referenced here today speak of 200 county wide? To say 200 in AP is false.Look at the study I posted. There are 17,000 gang members (at minimum) in the state. I think it said nearly 5,000 were Bloods. The survey also admits that this is based on reporting police estimates which are acknowledged to only estimate the tip of the iceberg. Let's see what APPD reported in 2004. Remember that heroin bust in Newark a couple of months ago? It was a Bloods gang that had ties to AP. I would not be surprised if there were 200 members here. But
say its 100 or 50, or 300+, what's the difference? If Keady even had an absolute basis for his numbers he would still be crucified.I want you to vent your anger here at GUMBA Night. I want Loffredo in 15ht Century clothes and Bruno railing like a madman. I want to read those letters from the boys in Ocean Twp. I want some balance.

[AsburyPark] Spit Out the Air

2006-11-03 Thread MarioAPNJ

Dan,
In reference to that "Gumba"bet
Tommy made with you:

Tom,We corresponded by email
about this and you said I could bet my sweet ass you were going to complain
[about Gumba Night]. You have to do it here publicly as well as directly to
the city. Both the city and Asbury Partners gets it from you with both
barrles. Don't pull any punches. I also expect to see it on your blog.
Carry on just like Columbus Day, then we will know your criticisms are for the
  issue and not the person.

Remember the "never...ever" words to Keady: "Our conversations are going to
be a little salty sometimes. That's never going to be shared with
anyone or ever held against you."

Dan, you need to learn to "spit out the air":

"My uncle ordered popovers from the restaurant's bill
of fare.
And when they were served, he regarded them with a
penetrating stare . . .

Then he spoke great Words of Wisdom as he sat there on
that chair:
"To eat these things," said my uncle, "you must excercise great care.
You may swallow down what's solid . . . BUT . . . you must spit out the air!"

And . . . as you partake of the world's bill of
fare, that's darned good advice to follow.

Do a lot of spitting out the hot air. And be
careful what you
swallow."- -
Dr. Seuss's famous 75-second commencement
speechat Lake Forest College, class of '77
