Mike,
If you are using Windows 7, just type "mouse" in the Search field Now,
you
will see many different screens which have various functions. In most
cases, the "Enable/Disable" function can be found under either the
Hardware
Tab or the Drivers tab. This will be a fairly common occurrence since
Windows 7 is the supporting operating system. There may be some minor
variations which are brand related but this process should work for you.

Hi guys. Well, it was bound to happen. I have been using Super Anti
Spyware 4.56 free edition successfully for a long time, but suddenly, it
stopped updating the database definitions a few weeks ago. So today I
updated to SAS 5.0 free dition, the latest version, and, of course, it is
much less JAWS friendly than its predecessor. Using the JAWS cursor with
JAWS 13, I was able to update the database definitions in this new version
of SAS and then run a quick scan. When the scan finished, the results page
showed that SAS had detected two potentially harmful threats, and
recommended that they be removed immediately from my computer. But using
the JAWS cursor, I could not find these threats listed anywhere on the
results page, nor could I find any check boxes to select them for removal.
Clicking on the Remove Threats button at the bottom of the page brought up a
warning that no threats had been selected for removal, but do I want to
continue anyway. Clicking on the No button brought me back to the results
page where I still could not find the detected threats and select them for
removal. This was never a problem with the earlier version of SAS. Can
anyone explain how to find and select malware threats detected by SAS 5.0?
Or is SAS now another one of those programs that has become unusable with
JAWS? Thanks for any help.

You could try Recuva, a free utility that attempts to recover lost files.
No guarantee that it will work, but its free and JAWS accessible.

[Blind-Computing] Balloon Messages in Windows7, Changing the amount of time they show

2012-03-28 Thread Mike & Barbara
Hi All,

I ran across a tip on how to set the time for how long balloon messages will
stay up so you can have time to access them. Here you go;

In Windows 7 it's under "Ease of Access". Type Ease of Access in to the
search box in the start prompt. In the Ease of Access Center go to, "Make
it
easier to focus on tasks", and hit enter.
Near the end of the options that come up is a combobox with different time
settings to adjust the time
that those balloons stay on screen.
I adjusted mine to 1 minute which gives me enough time to find them and
click on them. Hope this helps. Take care.

Re: [Blind-Computing] Dropbox help creating links

2012-03-13 Thread Mike & Barbara
Hi Samson

Below are 2 ways to create an http link.

Example #1, using the file menu;

1. You select / highlight the file in your dropbox\public folder and press
the alt+f key to bring up the files menu. 2. Down arrow to dropbox and press
enter. arrow down to copy public link and press enter.
3. Then you can then paste the link in to an email message.

Example#2, using the application key / context menu;

Wait till Dropbox says all files up to date then:
1. Open the "My Dropbox" folder.
2. Open the "Public" folder.
3. Select the file, press the applications key, down arrow or press d
for "Dropbox", open the submenu with right arrow or enter, down arrow or
press c until you hear "Copy Public Link". Press enter on " Copy Public
Link ". By pressing enter right here, you have created a link that has been
copied to the clipboard by the Dropbox program.
4. Now, create a new email for whoever you want to have this Dropbox file
sent to.
After you have addressed the email and written whatever message in the edit
field, press your paste keystroke, control + V, and the download link will
be pasted into the email. When whoever gets the email, all they have to do
is click on the link and a download dialogue box will open to download the
file.

Hope this helped. Take care.

Hi Madison,

I agree with you but, yet disagree! As I stated earlier, people like
getting advice / help from others who have experienced the same or similar
problems. Too many times doing searches gives you so many options that it
can leave you with your head spinning! As for dragging others into help
related questions, everyone offers their help, noone is dragged in! As for
the question I originally posted to the list, this person needed the help &
I didn't have an answer for them, not ever having experienced this problem
or similar problems & I didn't have the time to search for it at the moment
so, I was guilty of using the list to help another! As it turned out, when
I had the time I Tandemed up with the person & got the problem resolved.
Take care.

I'm sorry Mike. I guess you're right in this instance. Its just that I
find
it a bit selfish that very often listers offer to help their friends then
come post questions on these lists essentially turning everyone into their
tech support department when he list never offered to help that unknown
family member. Its one thing when a lister nees help, but its an entirely
different thing when list members volunteer this list to fix their
friend's
computers. Also, even though your friend is not very knowledgeable about
computers or Google searches, you are, so if you offer to help it isn't
fair
we all get dragged into this. I do agree with you on your point that if
all
knew how to use Google we would not need these less. These lists seem to
be
essential in the blind community because for the vast number of questions,
they can indeed be answered very quickly with a Google search. It appears
that blind folk like the notion of being a part of a group, so they spend
los of time on these lists. I signed up thinking I was an average computer
user and hoping to learn some new stuff, but it appears I'm answering more
questions than increasing my computer related knowledge. Just my thoughts.

is my understanding that Firefox uses a different flash than I.e.I have
used
the Ninite installer, for FF, and it says the install was successful. I
have Windows XP SP3, JAWS 12. Besides that, I have no further
information.

Re: [Blind-Computing] SelectingContinuous&Non-ContinuousFilesUsingA Mouse

2012-03-09 Thread Mike & Barbara
Hi Scorpio,

Let me see if I understand you correctly. Are you saying, for selecting
continuous files;

1. Highlight the first file & press the left moust button 1 time, then hold
down the shift key.

2. While keeping the shift key depressed, arrow down to the last file you
would like selected, do a single left mouse clickk on the last file, & by
doing single left mouse clicks on the first & last file in the list, all
files between the first and the last will be highlighted / selected.

Yes, these are personally created files and not system files. I would like
to thank you for your patience & understanding. Hell, if I had known this
mouse Bulls**t was this much of a pain, I could have hired a tutor for 30
minutes & been done with this crap 2 days ago! hahaha hahaha hahaha

In all seriousness, I have learned a great deal from the replies this thread
generated & truly thank everyone that got involved. I'm also sure other
list members learned crap they will never use as well! hahaha hahaha hahaha

Thanks again, take care.
Mike

 Hi Mike,

This one was a bit perplexing when I thought about it and thinking back to
my sighted days, in order to select contiguous files, one would single
click
on the first file in the list of files, hold down the shift key, then
click
on the list file in the list one wants to include in the list of files.
This will, in turn, select all the files between those two files.
Additionally, should one wish to select further files to include in the
list, one simply need hold down the control key, and continue selecting
the
files in the noncontiguous format until all files are selected.

I should mention that I am assuming that the files being selected are user
created files like MP3 or word processing documents and not system files.
I'm sure I don't have to tell you that the process for selecting system
files are far more different than selecting user created files as system
files are normally hidden, and so will not show up in a regular window,
and
so folder options must be changed in order to reflect the showing of those
 files.

Either way, the continuous and non-contiguous format of selecting files
are
 as I have outlined above.

Hope this helps you in some way.

 Scorpio

2012-03-09 Thread Mike & Barbara
Hi Scorpio,

I re-wrote your prior steps to reflect the single clicking. Would you or any
other list member please review the re-written steps to see if they are
correct? Also, if a person wanted to select continuous files, would they
hold down the shift key, like I do with Jaws, & arrow / scroll down ?

Here are the re-written steps;

For selecting non-continuous files the person has to press and hold down the
control key, then left click 1 time on each file they want to select as
they move down the list.

Once all the files are selected, they can press the applications key, or
press the right mouse button 1 time on any of the files, to get the
context menu, or, if they're copying or moving the files, press the
 keystrokes as needed.

 Hope this helps.

 Scorpio

Thank you very much for taking the time to look at this. Take care.

I figured that they were single clicks since, from what I understand, double

click does. LOL LOL

Hi Alan,

After you find the YouTube file you want to play press enter on it, so the
file opens & starts playing / running. Once the file starts you can do as
David & Madison have suggested. Press the F6 key, after you press the F6
key the URL will be highlighted so, just press control + C to copy the URL,
& press shift + F6, to take you back to the video screen or, after the file
starts, press Alt + D & control + C to copy the URL. After copying the URL
either way, close YouTube, if you're done, & paste the URL in an email or on
your forehead, & send. LOL Take care.

By

NetApp Thursday became the latest major storage vendor to officially raise
hard drive prices in the wake of the Thailand floods.

NetApp Thursday night
posted a notice on its Web site
saying it is temporarily raising hard drive list prices by between 5 percent
and 15 percent effective Feb. 6.

The move, according to NetApp, was necessary due to increased hard drive
costs in the wake of
severe floods in Thailand
that wiped out
nearly one-third
of the world's hard drive manufacturing capacity.

NetApp's planned price increases follows similar moves by rivals EMC (NYSE:
EMC)
and Hewlett-Packard (NYSE:
HPQ),
both of which said in December that they plan to raise hard drive prices by
up to 15 percent, according to multiple news reports,
including Computer Business Review.

In its statement, NetApp said it empathizes with Thailand citizens who are
trying to recover from the floods and that it is working with hard drive
suppliers
to secure the drives to meet its needs.

"However, similar to other vendors we have seen a negative impact to our
drive costs. While we initially absorbed the cost increases to protect our
partners
and customers, we are no longer able to do so. Effective February 6, 2012,
we will be temporarily increasing HDD list prices 5 -15% over current
pricing.
We will continue to monitor the situation as it evolves and will provide
updates as appropriate. Thank you for your continued partnership," NetApp
said
in the statement.

HP declined to offer specific information on its hard drive pricing plans.
However, in a statement e-mailed to CRN, HP wrote, "Given the uncertainty
associated
with the situation, HP expects there to be continued headwinds related to
the flooding in Thailand, affecting hard disk drive (HDD) supply and pricing
by our suppliers, which may have a temporary impact on HP's pricing of HDDs.
HP is in constant communication with our employees, clients and suppliers
to optimize business continuity and actively manage this dynamic situation."

EMC declined to comment on hard drive prices, citing the quiet period before
it announces its next quarterly financial results on Jan. 24 . However, an
EMC spokesperson did confirm that EMC early this quarter raised its hard
drive list prices by 5 percent to 15 percent over last year's fourth-quarter
prices.

Dell (NSDQ:
Dell)
did not respond to inquiries about its hard drive pricing plans.

HI Pete,

What I would do is, download MSSE but do not install / run it, this way MSSE
will be ready to install after uninstalling McAfee. To uninstall McAfee,
make sure it is turned off / exited. Whaat you can do is go into, msconfig,
control + tab to start-up, uncheck the McAfee box & reboot the computer.
This way you know that McAfee didn't start with Windows. Check the System
Tray to be sure. Now you can uninstall it, do a disk clean-up, & defrag,
reboot & install MSSE. Take care.

Re: [Blind-Computing] mal whare bytes problem

2012-02-21 Thread Mike & Barbara
Hi Angelina,

The error message you are referring to only comes up when Jaws is running.
I had someone sighted check this message on 3 computers running 3 different
operating systems & it only came up when Jaws was running on all 3
computers. Freedom Scientific could not re-create this problem because I
only get this error message running the Pro / pay for version, & Fs only
runs the free version. So, whenever this message comes up , just press the
spacebar on the okay button to get rid of it. In closing, just close the
message, it is only a conflict between Jaws & Malware Bytes. & does not pose
any problems. Hope this helps, somewhat anyways. Take care.

Re: [Blind-Computing] about outlook express for windows 7

2012-02-19 Thread Mike & Barbara
Hi David,

There is a program that allows you to use identities in Windows Mail. The
information is below.

http://www.oehelp.com/WMIDs/Default.aspx

WMIDs (Windows Mail Identities) is a program that replaces the Outlook
Express Identities feature, which was removed when Outlook Express was
renamed and
updated to Windows Mail in Windows Vista. The program allows Windows Mail
users to have different Identities that impersonate users, while being
logged
onto the same user space in Vista. This program will only run in Windows
Vista and is only for Windows Mail.
Such a feature is useful for separating business from personal messages, as
well as for allowing different individuals to be able to segregate their
message
store and settings from other users, while being logged on to Vista as a
single user.

This capability is achieved by allowing each Identity to have its own
settings and message location. By switching between Identities, the user can
maintain
segregation of these settings and messages relevant to the particular
Identity.

The program allows the user to manage various Identities, so that Windows
Mail settings can be the same or different between Identities. Similarly the
user
can specify the same or different message store locations on a per Identity
basis.

If the user runs the program with command line parameters then it will start
Windows Mail with the designated Identity, allowing the user to create
shortcuts
to open Windows Mail under each Identity.

You can get the rest of the info about this program from the link above.
Hope this helps. Take care.
Mike

Probably my client of choice would be some sort of collection between
outlook and outlook express with maybe a couple of other items tossed in
the
mix. Right now I am using outlook 2003 to write this on my windows 7
system
and it seems to work the best for my needs.

You can't setup identities in windows mail or in windows live mail
although
live mail creates separate inboxes for each email account you configure.
The
status line in live mail is something I can't seem to find at all which is
 quite strange.

Identities are quite easy in outlook express but you can do them in
outlook
but it does entail more effort.

Some systems have developed problems after enabling windows mail on 7 but
many have not and chug along happy as can be.

Hi Brad,

I just installed Office 2010 so, this is all new to me. See if the below
makes any sense to you.

To specify your own line spacing, type the spacing amount that you want in
the At box. For example, enter 1.25 for an extra quarter line of space
between
lines, or click the up or down arrow to increase or decrease the amount in
half-line increments. When you finish, click OK.
. Press one of the shortcut key combinations:
list of 4 items nesting level 1
Ctrl+l - Single-spacing
Ctrl+5 - 1.5-line spacing
Ctrl+2 - Double-spacing
Ctrl+0(zero) - Add or remove 12 points of space before a paragraph.
list end nesting level 1

Line Spacing in Word 2010
. Choose Paragraph... from the shortcut menu to open the Paragraph dialog
box. On the Indentation and Spacing tab, in the Line Spacing list box,
choose
one of the options:
list of 6 items nesting level 1
Single - Single-line spacing. (Line height automatically adjusts to
accommodate the size of the font and any graphics or formulas in a line.)
1.5 Lines - Line-and-one-half spacing (an extra half-line of space between
lines).
Double - Double-spacing (an extra full line of space between lines).
At Least - At least the spacing that you specify in the At box-the line
won't be shorter than what you specify, but it may be taller because Word
will add
extra spacing for tall characters, big graphics, and superscript or
subscript text.
Exactly - The exact spacing that you specify in the At box. All lines are
exactly the same height, regardless of the size of the characters in the
line;
Word doesn't add extra spacing. Note that some text may be cut off if enough
space is not available.
Multiple - Multiples of single-line spacing, such as triple (3) or quadruple
(4), as specified in the At box.

The information above was copied from;

 Hello all.
I recently upgraded to magicjack plus and I can find virtually no
documentation about how to configure the device. I can get it working if I
connect it to my computer, but does anyone know how to configure it for
use
without my computer. I do have a router, but I know noone in this area who
is technically savy enough to read the little brochure or what ever it is
that came with it. I like the savings and I don't mind the quality but the
lack of documentation, accessible or otherwise is very disapointing.
I would appreciate any help anyone can offer.
 thanks in advance.

[Blind-Computing] New Information On Transporting Office Settings

2012-01-27 Thread Mike & Barbara
Hi All,

Out of curiosity I checked the MS Office folder in All Programs & there was
a save my settings wizard. I ran a search, and below is what I found.

SUMMARY
This step-by-step guide describes how to back up user settings for an Office
XP installation to a secure Web site or to a file by using the Save My
Settings
Wizard.

The Save My Settings Wizard stores information about program options and
preferences, custom templates and dictionaries, and AutoCorrect lists to a
secure
location on the Internet or to a file. You can also use the Save My Settings
Wizard to restore settings to an Office XP installation.
Back Up Office XP Settings
NOTE: When you start the Save My Settings Wizard, you will be prompted to
quit any Office XP programs that may be running. Quit all Office XP programs
before
you perform this procedure.

To back up Office XP settings by using the Save My Settings Wizard, follow
these steps:

list of 5 items
1. Start the Save My Settings Wizard. To do this, click Start, point to
Programs, point to Microsoft Office Tools, and then click Save My Settings
Wizard.
2. On the first page of the wizard, click Next.
3. Click the Save the settings from this machine option, and then click
Next.
4. Click one of the following options:

list of 2 items nesting level 1
• Save the settings to the Web
• Save the settings to a File
list end nesting level 1
NOTE: If you choose the Save the settings to a File option, the settings are
stored in an Office Profile Settings (OPS) file on your computer's hard disk
when you click Next, and the wizard will finish. If you choose the Save the
settings to the Web option, you will be prompted to type a Microsoft
Passport
ID when you click Next.

Click Next.
5. Type your Passport sign-in name and password, and then click OK.

Microsoft stores your settings on the Web for three months. If you want to
receive e-mail notification before the expiration date, type your e-mail
address,
and then click Next. If you do not want to receive this notification, leave
the E-mail address box blank, and then click Finish.
list end

REFERENCES
For additional information about the Save My Settings Wizard, please see the
following Microsoft Office XP Resource Kit Web site:

Hope this helps others besides me. Take care.

[Blind-Computing] Transporting Office Settings

2012-01-27 Thread Mike & Barbara
Hi All,

I just installed Office 2002 onto a new computer running XP Pro & Jaws13.
Is there a way to transport the settings from another computer running
Office 2002, to this 1? Mainly I would like to transfer the Word settings
from the other computer to this one so I don't have to configure all that
crap again! LOL LOL

All help will be greatly appreciated & graciously accepted. Thanks much,
take care.

[Blind-Computing] Update On Converting .EML files to .TXT

2012-01-16 Thread Mike & Barbara
Hi All,

Well, I finally got the 1 folder with its sub-folders converted from
approximately85% .EML files to roughly90% .TXT files. The size of the
original folder before the conversion was 9.40GB, & after converting &
placing the new files in a new folder with the same folder structure, 1.75
GB! I used a program called Potal Mail Converter from;

www.coolutils.com

I used the trial version so, I couldn't do anything with the attachments.
The Pro version has several options for dealing with attachments. I thought
I would give y'all an update on the conversion process. This Total Mail
Converter program is a kick in the a**! Take care.

Start with player off, then press rewind+sleep+tone down then press and
hold
the power button for about 2 seconds then release the power button. This
will bring up a menu then use either the rewind or fast forward arrow to
get
to battery then press play. That takes you to statistics then press fast
forward arrow once and that goes to initiate battery recharge. Press play
here. If you get the battery recharge initiated message go ahead and turn
the player off. Make sure the player is plugged in. ALso make sure you
have
the latest firmware for the player.

Hi All,

I have the NLS Advanced player & the battery doesn't seem to be taking a
charge. I have had the player plugged into a 120 volt AC socket for 15
hours & when pressing the information button the battery status states that
there is less than 1 hour of battery life left. This is only the 2nd or 3rd
time I have charged the battery so, it wouldn't seem likely that I am
anywhere close to how many times the battery pack can be recharged. In some

times. All advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much, take care.

 Just use, windows-key+e=windows explorer,
You then will see the local C Drive.

If you want computer on desktop,
 Go to desktop,

 Ctrl+spacebar to unselect icons,
 Now applications key,
Up arrow and enter on personalize,
 Now, tab and enter on,
 Change desktop icons link,
 Here you can check computer,
 And tab ok.
 Hope this helps.
 As I said,
Windows-key+pause will allow you to see how much memory,

 Hello trish;

 Use the keystroke,
 Windows-key+pause,

 Or,
 Go to computer,
 Highlight C Drive,
Now bring up properties with alt+enter,
Now rout jaws to pc, you will find the information.
 As for finding the memory;

You could also highlight computer, on desktop, and again bring up
properties, rout jaws to pc, and start down arrowing.

 Hi Bill,
It is still called Device Manager, in Windows 7,
however, how you get to it is a little different.
In Windows 7, you can simply type the following in the search box on the
 start menu:
 device manager
 Alternatively,
if God Mode is being used,
then a person can open that folder and find device manager in the list,
and
 hit enter.

What I think Trish is asking for is how to go into the "Device Manager"
and
discover exactly what hardware components are configured for her system.
For example, I can do this by:

 1) Opening the "SETTINGS" item on the main menu and selecting "Control

 2) Selecting "Device Manager" (or selecting "System" and then finding the
 "Device Manager" tab)

 3) Once the "Device Manager" is open, browsing (and opening closed
 elements - the component list.

One needs to be careful not to modify any of those settings once in Device
Manager unless they are certain of what they are doing, but this isn't
really very risky since cancelling out is fairly obvious. This procedure
gives one an exhaustive list of exactly what his/her PC is comprised of
 concerning hardware.

Does not Windows 7 provide a "Device Manager" interface; perhaps it isn't
 called that in that OS?

Hi Lloyd,

Do the following;
1. Press Alt + V, for the view menu.
2. Arrow down & make sure that list is checked, if it isn't press enter to
check it. If you press enter Jaws will take you out of the menues. That's
okay just press Alt + V, for the view menu again.
3. Arrow down to Arrange Icons By sub-menues & press enter.
4. Now, arrow down to name & press enter.

Whenever you have List & Name checked & your menues are inverted, follow
steps 3 & 4 to reverse the order. Hope this helped. Take care.

Yes they can be deleted without any problems. It just a backup of your

Three Tricks to Make the Windows "Send To" Feature Even More Useful.

 http://www.techsupportalert.com/content/three-tricks-make-windows-send-featu
 re-even-more-useful.htm

 Updated 19. September 2011 - 6:34 by v.laurie.

It's been part of Windows for years and may be old hat to some but the
"Send
To" function in the right-click context menu doesn't get the use that it
ought to. Also, it has some tricks that most people don't know. A
previous
tip described a very useful app that adds features to "Send To" but this
time I will give you three little-known tricks that help make this
function
more powerful without requiring the addition of any program.

How to move a file or folder instead of copying it

The default action of "Send To" is to copy a file or folder to the target
destination. To change this so that the file is moved instead of copied,
hold down the Shift key when you click the desired destination. This works
when standard folders are the target destination but the special folder
(My)
Documents only seems to accept the copy action.

The copy or move function is especially useful when you have added folders
of your own to the default list of Send To destinations. How to add
folders
was described in a previous tip and the third tip below gives another
 method.

How to send a shortcut of a file or folder

Hold down the keyboard combination Ctrl+Shift and the "Send To" action
becomes the creation of a shortcut in the destination folder.

Put SendTo in the "Send To" menu

Adding the SendTo folder itself to the menu provides a quick way to add a
shortcut from a desired program or folder to the "Send To" menu. With the
SendTo folder itself as a destination you can do the tongue-twisting
operation of sending to "Send To". Here is the procedure to set this up in
 Windows Vista/7:
 1. Open the Start menu and enter "shell:sendto" in the Start search bar
(without quotes and with a colon but no spaces).
 2. The SendTo folder will open. Note that the folder name is written as
one
 word.
 3. Go up one level to the parent Windows folder of SendTo with the
keyboard
shortcut Alt+Up Arrow. Alternatively, click "Windows" in the address bar
 breadcrumb list.
 4. Find the folder SendTo in the new window and right-click drag it to
the
 desktop.
 5. Choose "Create shortcuts here" from the context menu to place a
shortcut
 on the desktop.
 6. Drag the new shortcut back to the SendTo folder icon in the open
window
 and move it there.
 7. Close the window.

The procedure for Windows XP is somewhat different:
1.SendTo is a Hidden folder in Windows XP. If necessary, change the
settings to make Hidden folders visible as given at this link.
 2. Open the Start menu and enter "%userprofile%" in the Run line (without
quotes but with the percent signs). Alternatively, enter "sendto" in the
Run line and go up one level to the parent folder.

Then follow steps 4-7 given for Windows Vista/7.

Now you will have a quick way to place folders and programs of your choice
in the list of target destinations in the Send To function.

2. The SendTo folder will open. Note that the folder name is written as one
word.
3. Go up one level to the parent Windows folder of SendTo with the keyboard
shortcut Alt+Up Arrow. Alternatively, click "Windows" in the address bar
breadcrumb list.
4. Find the folder SendTo in the new window and right-click drag it to the
desktop.
5. Choose "Create shortcuts here" from the context menu to place a shortcut
on the desktop.
6. Drag the new shortcut back to the SendTo folder icon in the open window
and move it there.

I take it you are using Win XP.
If the .wav file is not the correct format, then it won't work.
I believe it has to be a PCM wav file.

You have to use your Jaws cursor & individually check the items that are in

probably have it done automatically because it is a major pain in the A**!

I run the version stated in the subject field and upon completion of a

However, after I click continue it says no items were selected and to

It's a very accessible phone, but now I could use the tones, rather than
hearing the numbers pressed.
This is because the tones could help me raise and lower the volume on my

Any information is greatly appreciated.

[Blind-Computing] Does Using an SSD Make a Difference?

2011-12-10 Thread Mike & Barbara
Hi All,

Below is an article I received from Auslogics that I thought y'all might
like to read.

Does Using an SSD Make a Difference?

Hi,

Liz Cornwell here. Recently we’ve started receiving a lot of questions about
SSDs. Does using an SSD make a difference? How to deal with SSDs? Should
they be defragged? So, as per your request, I’m going to shed some light on
SSDs in this newsletter.

First of all, I’d like to remind you what SSDs are. Basically, a solid-state
drive (SSD) is a data storage device, just like your hard drive. Unlike hard
drives, SSDs use NAND flash memory to store data, which makes them a lot
faster.

Does using an SSD make a difference?

Absolutely! SSDs are electronic devices and don’t have any mechanical parts.
This means that there is literally nothing to slow them down. Once you have
an SSD, you’ll be rid of the worst performance bottleneck. When you install
an SSD, everything else you did to boost performance will seem
insignificant. And there is more good news – file fragmentation doesn’t
affect SSDs because they can grab fragmented files just as quickly as
non-fragmented files. In addition to that, using an SSD is a lot more
pleasant than using a hard drive because SSDs are quieter and don’t suffer
from physical shock as much as HDDs do.

Sounds great, doesn’t it? But there are a few things you need to keep in
mind when you are using an SSD. The most important thing to remember is that
SSD flash memory can only endure a certain number of writes. It’s a pretty
large number, but still. That’s why it’s good to do everything you can to
reduce the number of writes and thus prolong the lifetime of your SSD.

Should you defragment an SSD?

This is another common question and the answer is “No”. As I said before,
conventional defragmentation doesn’t improve the performance of an SSD in
any noticeable ways.

You might argue and say that there are articles recommending to defrag SSDs
and various software that supports SSD defrag. Well, all I can say is that
these articles are written by people who choose an insignificant performance
gain over stability and reliability. Remember I said that you need to reduce
the number of writes? Well, conventional defrag performs plenty of writes,
doing your SSD no good. As for the SSD defrag software, reputable programs
don’t actually attempt to defrag SSDs – all they do is apply file placement
optimization algorithms.

By the way, even Microsoft recognizes that SSDs don’t need to be defragged.
If you have a system with an SSD, scheduled defragmentation in Windows 7 is
disabled by default when the operating system is installed on an SSD from
scratch.

Take care.

Hi Iqbal,

It's possible that the PDF files you are talking about contain graphics, &
therefore Jaws won't be able to read them. This is only a guess without
having the document to read for myself. There are other reasons that Jaws
won't read PDF files, & hopefully others will join this conversation to
mention other examples . Take care.

Re: [Blind-Computing] looking for pdf to word converter

2011-12-05 Thread Mike & Barbara
Hi Iqbal,

You need to disable protected view first to get it to work well with Jaws.

Do the following:

1. From either your desktop or start menu, press enter on Adobe. The Adobe
window is now open, press control + K, to open preferences. Another way to

get to preferences is after pressing enter on the Adobe shortcut, press Alt
+ E, for the edit menu, arrow up to preferences, & press enter.

3. When preferences opens you will be in a tree view and should be on the
General page, if not arrow up or down until you have General highlighted.
It

is #4 of 29. Tab until you find a checkbox called enable protected mode at
startup, uncheck it, choose yes on the warning you will get to continue.

You need to look at 2 more settings so, tab until you have General
highlighted again.

4. With General highlighted, press the letter I, until you have Internet
highlighted.

5. Tab to, Display PDF in browser, if this box is checked press the spacebar
to uncheck it.

6. Tab to connection speed combobox, arrow up / down for the setting that
best matches your Internet Providers speed.

7. Tab to the okay button, press enter to close preferences & save your
changes, & press Alt + F4 to close Adobe.

If I have missed something or if there is something that should be added,
would someone please jump in & correct me?!

Hope this helps. Take care.
