Hallo there
64K should be adequate...
Max bandwidth for voice on Cisco router when configured right is 10k.
That means you will not use more than 40k for four connections.

Anybody has more info on this???

Re: Bandwidth constraints for VoIP

2001-01-09 Thread Laurent Lange

Hi,

don't forget there are the ip, udp and RTP headers as well.

I am told that with the maximum compression (CS-ACELP) the bandwidth you
need for the voice itself is 8kbps. However, voice packets are relatively
small so for 40 bytes of payload, you end up with an ip packet that is more
than 80 bytes (ip, udp and rtp payload). So without RTP compression you
should foresee 17-18kbps, with RTP compression down to 12kbps pre voice
channel but this introduces additional delays.

RE: Disappointed with ccnp!!

2001-01-09 Thread Cletus . O . Ugwu

It all depends on what you want out of your certifications. As long as you
did not get your certifications by "cramming and dumping only", it is still
worthwhile even though you cannot get a job now. My little advice is: target
an employer in your area, get some information about their Network needs
,make sure you can fulfill those needs and go to market yourself directly.
Just be confident in what you have . It is the employer that should be
pitied for missing what you have and not the other way round.
I think you will get more help from recruiters at [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi group members.
I need your help.
I am having a hard time on finding a job.
I recently got ccnp certification and looking for the
entry level of job for network engineer.
I am living in San Francisco, and graduated from
college less than a year ago.
I have less than a year of network experience that I
got from school computer lab.
I had a harder time finding a job before I became
ccnp. So I studied hard believing that ccnp would get
me somewhere at least as a entry level network
engineer. Now I am kind of confused and disappointed
with the fact that I am still having a hard time
finding a job even with ccnp certification.
I feel like I need more cisco certifications such as
ccda, ccdp.
Would these certification ever help me find job?
It is really discouraging that cisco certification
doesn't help me much find a job at this point, because
I am also pursuing ccie too. I have to ask myself what
is the point of getting cisco certification.
Lots of CCNAs are having a job. Why not ccnp?

Could somebody tell me why it goes like this, and what
I should do?
Am I looking for wrong job?

I will appreiciate your input.

Hi Tariq,
I sat my CCDA at the end of last year, at the time I was a CCNA and my friend was a
CCNP ?!! We both sat it at the same time, and it is a very difficult exam, not if you
know the cisco exam requirements, but mainly because the case studies are so time
consuming. An indication is that after 1 hour in the exam I was on question 25 ?!! I
finished the exam with 4 minutes to spare, and my colleague only just finished. There
was a lot of questions on WAN protocols, but I am sure if you study hard it won't be a
problem, the only real problem with this exam is the time it takes to read the case
studies I had 4 different cases in my exam. Good luck and I hope I have been of
help

No, you don't need 5 tabs. You can have just one, but the key thing
is to use just tabs, not ' ' (at least on Solaris).

RE: Bandwidth constraints for VoIP

2001-01-09 Thread Ricardo Ciganda

Hi, all

The bandwidth requirements for VoIP is the following

Aprox 11Kbps for a voice channel (unidirectional), so a conversation
wastes in fact 24 Kbps.

So, with 64 Kbps you can hold two conversations (24 +24)=48 Kbps. I have
never tried to code 3 conversations in 64 Kbps but I suspite that it
won´t work.

RE: Disappointed with ccnp!!

2001-01-09 Thread Croyle, James

Don't be disappointed with your CCNP, that's for sure... Just don't
consider it the end all to getting that job. I started with my company in
June 1999 with an MSCE and CCNA, neither of which I attained with work
experience, one with school, the other self study. I got a job setting up
small LANs for scanning projects, and then doing the scanning along with the
others! Then, moved UP to the help desk!!! Didn't even start there, is
what I am getting at. Got promoted in 2 months to help desk supervisor by
doing a good job (I think), then moved to engineering team in 6 months to
help design our new Cisco network because there were only 2 other CCNAs
around to do it. In June of 2000 I attained my CCNP, with some work
experience on the equipment and our test lab at work. Now I would consider
myself a valuable member of our Network Infrastructure team, but it didn't
happen overnight, and even though I wanted it to happen, I really didn't
expect it to at this company based on where I started.

One more thought. There are those, including a very senior Microsoft
Architect here, who still say I don't have enough experience to go after my
CCIE, that it would not benefit myself, or the company because even if I
attained it, I would not have enough years of experience to back that cert.
Well to him, I said, I am not going to sit around 10 years until I have your
experience, I am going to study everyday, and get involved with every
network problem and design issue I can to gain experience faster in
troubleshooting methods, and seeing various levels of problems. To that he
just shook his head and said with a smile... Kids nowdays.. ;-) By the
way, I am 32. Not really a kid anymore. hehehehe

I don't know you personally, but I have some
suggestions for you to think about. Don't let that
certification go to your head. If you give the
impression to an employer that you deserve to have a
job because of your CCNP, you will not get hired.
Don't think that you are better than others because of
your CCNP. Also, your personality and attitude that
you show during interviews is critical in landing that
first job. Show that you can be a team player and can
work well and get along with almost anyone. And
lastly, consider other entry level positions, such as
help desk, because you don't have any actual work
experience. Employers don't really consider "lab" as
work experience. Hope this helps.

Good luck,

RE: Radius -vs- Tacacs+

2001-01-09 Thread C. Cubberley

We are just beginning to look at a product from Blockade software for
enterprise authentication utilizing a very large legacy ACF2 security
database. Part of the authentication will include users dialing into our
5200 access servers, currently AAA served through CiscoSecure, on a Unix
platform, with the default database and tacacs+. In retrospect, that was
probably a poor choice, since the newer releases of CiscoSecure seem to
favor NT and Radius. I believe tacacs+ is more robust than radius, but
could possibly be a poor choice in the long run. So when we interface with
the new Blockade product and dump CiscoSecure, we will probably go to
Radius. I also would be very interested to hear anybody else's views on
this issue.

Thanks,

Hi,

your calculation seems a bit strange to me. When you order a 64kbps leased
Line, it is bidirectional (64kbps in both direction). so I don't see the
point in adding the two directions.

when you're not in VoIP, PCM uses 1 64k channel for a bidirectional
conversation.

What do you think?

Re: Disappointed with ccnp!!

2001-01-09 Thread Shabbir S. Talib

My 2 cents...try looking out of the San Francisco market. Also,
just a CCNP cert. at entry level is not enough. An additional A+, SCSA,
CNA, MCP will help.

Good Luck

We are using the Visual Network's CSU/DSU, it has very powerful management
tools. You can get tons of information from it. Their URL is

I've been in a situation where we had to have the phone company come in with
a tester called a T-berd, and do a test where they set one end of the WAN
connection to loop back, and then flood the other side with bit patterns
that take up the whole bandwidth, and then keep track of errors. Kind of
extreme, but it's conclusive.

Something you may want to do is get WAN killer.

http://solarwinds.net/Tools/Miscellaneous/WAN%20Killer/ and do a similar
test yourself.
I try to get a real test for every new circuit I get.

As for CIR, call up their tech support, give them your circuit number and
ask for the port and CIR speeds. That'l catch paperwork errors.

RE: PIX failover redundancy

2001-01-09 Thread Christopher Larson

Statefull failover can be doen if any interface on the PIX goes down. Each
interface needs to be able to talk to the other interface on the second pix.
So the inside on the primary has to be able to communicate with the inside
on the secondary, DMZ to DMZ etc. and for statefull fail there has to be one
dedicated ethernet port that simply connects the 2 pix's as well as the blue
serial cable that connects the 2 pix's together.

With statefull failover either all the interfaces need to be configured for
failover or none of them. You cannot selectively put intewrfaces in or out
of failover. It's the whole pix or not.

You can have up to 6 and maybe even 8 now configured on the pix in a
stateful failover with the 5.x code.

Hi all,

I configure the two PIX with failover function. Is it once there is a
link (in, out or DMZ) connected to PIX is going down, then the failover
would be activated?

Is it I can only configure one instance for each interface (in, out and
DMZ) on one PIX? If so, why PIX 520 has six slots, if there are only
three interfaces to be activated?

Thanks

I can appreciate what the senior Microsoft Architect is saying, I'm 22 and
this is the kind of impression alot of older guys are giving me. They don't
say it, but you know it's there.

I believe these people feel threaten by younger people coming up the ranks,
who have been exposed to computers since they were kids. These old guys
probably started their computing career from another field, and switched
careers because of the money. We kids were always into computers because we
loved it, and weren't concerned with monetary rewards.

RE: CCDA Exam

2001-01-09 Thread Rik Guyler

While not a huge fan of the Sybex books, this is what I bought since it was
half the price of the Cisco Press book at the time of purchase. I found it
adequate to pass the exam. However, I have heard better things about the
Cisco Press books, and in general, prefer Cisco Press over any other
publisher. Boson also produces a quality product and will assist you in
preparing for the CCDA exam.

Moreover which practicse exams are very close to real exam I know that
due to lot of case studies it is impossible to find any practicse exam which
is closer than real exam. But even in this case i you know any practicse
exam which is closer to your real exam than please let me know

Re: LANE over PVCs

2001-01-09 Thread Kevin Wigle

I have something similar in our lab.

Use irb to bridge the ATM

in global config:

bridge irb
bridge 1 protocol ieee
 bridge 1 route ip

on the ATM interface:
~
interface ATM1/0.826 multipoint
  ip address 172.16.1.1 255.255.255.0
  atm pvc 826 0 826 aal5snap inarp 1
  map-group VLAN826
bridge-group 1

create a BVI:
~~
interface BVI1
 mtu 1500
 ip address 198.103.240.25 255.255.255.252

hope this gives you a few ideas..

RE: CCDA Exam

2001-01-09 Thread Rik Guyler

I agree that the difficult part of this exam is not the technology but
rather the format. This test differs from all of the other Cisco exams in
that it tests your ability to read, comprehend, and interpret information,
which are vital qualities for a network designer who must listen to a
customer and "interpret" what the customer is conveying.

Perhaps a better title for this exam would be the "Customer Non-Technical
Requirements to Technical Solutions Interpretation" exam. You will find
that most customers will not only be unable to tell what they need in terms
of technology, but also unable to tell you what they need in any other
fashion. Taking what they can tell you, which may be close to nothing, and
then forming a viable solution based on what they tell you is the single
most important phase of the network design process.

the case studies I had 4 different cases in my exam. Good luck and I

Re: CCDA Exam

2001-01-09 Thread NetEng

I have passed my CCNA and just passed the CCDA (Monday). The material is no
harder than whats on the CCNA, however the others are correct in stating the
time it takes to read through the case studies. I had four different case
studies and 2/3 of the questions were related. You must read all the
questions very carefully. I used Priscilla's Top-Down Network Design (a
great book) and some study guides. I thought the CCNA was harder, but the
CCDA is more time consuming. I used the Boson exams a little bit. They were
pretty good for the case studies. It was test #1. Good Luck.

I did it before, hold router with one hand and use the other hand to do

RE: Disappointed with ccnp!!

2001-01-09 Thread Dan West

It all depends on who you work for. I'm working for a
company in Sacramento making good pay and I only
currently have my CCNA with two years of hands-on.
Although I do have intensive practical experience with
Unix and Cisco routers.

If you work for the state or your county, you can make
a LOT of dough. They tend to overpay for most
positions. If you work for some smaller companies,
I've found that they will pay you much less for even
more work Shop around.

RE: CCDA Exam

2001-01-09 Thread Roan, Wayne

I passed the CCDA on Friday of last week. It was a very hard exam due to
the case studies and the scale of topics tested. I did not write everything
down as I was told to do, so I made it even more diffcult for myself. I
passed, but was not happy with my score. I used the DCN from Cisco Press
and the Exam Cram book. This exam is NOT like the CCNA, I had VAX, SNA,
AppleTalk, IPX, IP and a host of other questions. I recommend you KNOW the
topics Cisco lists on their website for the CCDA, in one way or another they
are tested. I purchased Test #1 for the CCDA from Boson and found it
provided very little help on the range of test questions and subjects
covered by the actual exam. Having passed the MCSE 4.0 exams and the CCNA,
I can tell you that this exam requires actual experience, not just a good
memory. It was the hardest test I have take so far, and until this point I
had given that honor to the Exchange 5.5 exam.

The rules have changed...

2001-01-09 Thread Tighe Kuykendall

An interesting read... I'm not sure if anyone else has seen this.

Tighe

As Cisco's channel partner family has grown significantly in
the past few years, we would like to take this opportunity to
inform many of our newer partners about our policy regarding
the reselling of Cisco products. In addition, we would like to
inform all our partners about an exciting new program that
affords the opportunity to participate in the secondary market.

Like many high-tech companies that produce software, Cisco
adopts a policy of nontransferability of its software to
protect its intellectual property rights. Cisco product owners
are only allowed to transfer, resell or re-lease used Cisco
hardware and not the embedded software that runs on the
hardware. This policy also applies to Cisco standalone software
applications.

Because Cisco's installed base of equipment has grown to such
large numbers over the years, companies have become more
interested in selling and leasing used Cisco equipment on the
secondary market. To provide our valued customers and partners
with this capability, Cisco has set up a program in which
companies can do so and comply with the terms of the software
license agreement that accompanies every Cisco product.
Companies interested in transferring title and ownership of
Cisco equipment that contains embedded software may now
purchase a new software license to do so. Leasing companies
that wish to re-lease a Cisco product with embedded software to
another lessee may also purchase on behalf of the new lessee a
software license each time before doing so.

To learn more about this new opportunity, as well as how to
place orders for software licenses, please visit:

Re: Disappointed with ccnp!!

2001-01-09 Thread chris fong

I have some suggestions for you to think about. They
may or may not apply to you.
Also look
professional when you go apply in person or for
interviews (don't go with spiked hair and a nose ring;
you get the picture?) And lastly, consider other entry
level positions, such as help desk, because you don't
have any actual work experience. Employers don't
really consider "lab" as work experience. Like I said
before, this may or may not apply to you, but you
would not believe some of the characters that I have
interviewed. Hope this helps.

Good luck,
Chris

ip route question

2001-01-09 Thread Stull, Cory

I remember reading somewhere that when you add an IP route the ip address of
the next hop doesn't necessarily need to be the next hop or even on the same
subnet..?

Reason for asking

I want RouterC to have to go to RouterA before going out routerB to the
internet because routerA and routerB are on same ethernet segment with a
websense internet filter on that segment being used to filter internet
traffic.Right now RouterC traffic goes straight to routerB to
internet and doesn't get filtered through the websense filter.

Comments?

Thanks in advance as always.

RE: ip route question

2001-01-09 Thread Chuck Larrieu

The answer is that on Cisco equipment, anyway, one can configure a static
route to go to a directly connected interface, or to any network that
appears in the routing table.

It looks like, in your case, you want something like this:

Router_C
i.p. route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 router_A_address ( since this is internet
traffic )

I am assuming router A then knows what to do with the traffic.

OSPF DR/BDR election (bcast media) ?

2001-01-09 Thread Phil Barker

Hi group,
Got OSPF set up on two routers, sharing the same
network, and I'm looking at the Overall elaection
process from start-up with a Sniffer.

According to the CCIE Lab Study Guide
(Hutnik/Saterlee)
P.381 the third hello packet shows Router B as elected
DR ?

My investigation agrees with the 1st 2 packets i.e
they cannot know anything yet (2-way incomplete),
however, the 3rd packet shows neighbor 1 and the
fourth packet from the other router shows neighbor 2,
which I think is correct. i.e the 2-way state is
complete.

Now what is interesting is that the DD packets are
exchanged, Link State Updates and Link State
Acknowledgements until the databases are synchronised.
Then AND only THEN does the Hello Packet contain the
DR and BDR data fields.

In my analysis this occurs at packet 67.

Aah !!! just thinking.
My synchronisation must have completed before the next
hello update i.e < 10 secs which would make sense.

Anyway I still can't see him getting away with that at
packet 3.

Any comments ?

Regards,

Phil.

Bridging IPX

2001-01-09 Thread Fomes Iain

Can anyone tell me whether or not ,if you are bridging IPX, whether this can
take place with straight IP IOS or if it is not capable of handling this. I
wish to turn off bridging which is enabled by default on all routers for IPX
and turn on IP bridging but I am concerned i will flood my router if i do
not have the opportunity to IPX bridging off which will require me to enter
a command that will only be accepted by IP plus IOS version . Anyone's
comments will be invaluable.

I have some suggestions for you to think about. They
may or may not apply to you.
Also look
professional when you go apply in person or for
interviews (don't go with spiked hair and a nose ring;
you get the picture?) And lastly, consider other entry
level positions, such as help desk, because you don't
have any actual work experience. Employers don't
really consider "lab" as work experience. Like I said
before, this may or may not apply to you, but you
would not believe some of the characters that I have
interviewed. Hope this helps.

Good luck,
Chris

Chuck,

Thanks for the verification. Thats what I thought. It isn't the best way
to do it but it will work. I forgot my little picture would get all hacked
up when I sent it but you got the jist of it.I'm going to send remote
sites 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 traffic to routerA and then from routerA through
routerB to the internet. This will make all internet traffic go through the
web sense filter.

Thanks again.

Comments?

Re: ip route question

2001-01-09 Thread Dan West

Yea, arp lookups will be performed until the specified
interface of the default route is found. This is
called recursive arp (??)

I think this is related to the idea of setting an
addresss way upstream as the default route for your
AS. In other words, efforts should be made to set the
default route as something closer to a more aggregated
network. I know I am not making any sense because it's
too early in the morn. Oh well, I know s/body will
slap me down if I make a mistake. That's what makes
this group so cool, IMHO.

Re: OSPF--ccnp question

2001-01-09 Thread Curtis Call

To display the link state database try "show ip ospf [process ID] database"
To display neighbors try "show ip ospf [process ID] neighbor"
Optionally you can add a "detail" to the end of that.

By the way, I got these from the end of the chapter on OSPF in Doyle's
"Routing TCP/IP" book, I'd recommend you read that book (you can skip the
chapter on IS-IS since it isn't on the test) before taking the BSCN.

To view the neighbors use "show ip ospf
neighbors"
To view the Link State database use "show ip ospf

Also, "debug ip ospf adjancencies" is very useful in a
lab cenario.

Generalizing can get you in trouble. Certainly, there are people who
don't have networking skills comparable to people who grew up with
the technology.

But that's not a question necessarily of older versus younger. At
times, I see progress in humanity due to the observation that every
generation thinks it invented sex, but now each generation thinks it
invented networking.

While we didn't necessarily know to call it networking at the time,
I've certainly been doing it for more than 22 years. As a user, I
was on an interactive terminal to a UNIVAC 1108 around 1967. By 1970,
I was actually running a patient care medical "network" on a DEC
PDP-11, with an assortment of 110 through 1200 bps interactive
terminals on dial and dedicated lines, but also with distributed
PDP-8 instrument data acquisition computers. About the same time, I
worked on military command and control networks.

I built my first recognizable network control center in 1974,
supporting a metropolitan and national IBM network.

Doyle Chapter 7 Troubleshooting Question 1?

2001-01-09 Thread igor vilensky

The network is diagrammed in Fig.7-30
Respective routing tables are in Figs. 7-(31-33)
The question regards which subnets are unreachable.
All ethernet links are subnets of 172.168.13.0.
ether interface address for Router A is:
172.168.13.86/29, subnet address x.x.x.80/29
for B: 172.168.13.90/28, subnet address x.x.x.80/28
for C: 172.168.13.75/27, subnet address x.x.x.64/27
how does this affect routing?
the answer key only addresses issues of rip version 1
and 2 compatibility.
RTC subnet includes hosts 65-94, covering A and B
RTB subnet includes hosts 81-94, covering A
RTA subnet includes hosts 81-86
the config includes 'no ip classless' on all routers
does that play a role?
what role does longest-prefix rule play,
and, lastly, what about the fact that these subnets
are
directly connected to their respective routers?

thanks,

igor

I can't remember whether the 2502 needs a media filter.
What type of physical port is the cable attaching to:
1. nine pin female

Are the HP mau's active (do they have external power) or
are they passive?

I suspect that you are using passive hubs, and the phantom

Other question: why two mau's?

Re: CCIE Written Detail

The Exam Cram will not give you enough to pass the written. It is not a bad
book and will give you some supplemental info.
What is needed to pass written has been posted quite a bit by those sho have
passed, my advice is to read and heed the info that has already been posted.

I don't think there is a quick cram method to ccie.

User Tracking Tool

2001-01-09 Thread Jeff Duchin

If anyone knows CWSI/User Tracking well, please respond...

I need to figure out how I can keep a log of the UT database without having
to physically click "save database". I want to use it for DHCP logs in a
campus environment. That way if Joe Blow is accessing something he's not
supposed to, I can check his/her user name/IP/MAC, etc. I'm using in
conjunction with User Registration Tool.

Cheers in advance,

I think that for those who have spent weeks reading high level stuff
that the Exam Cram book is something good to review the week before your
written exam. It has a good, brief, coverage of the minimal essentials
and may help in reminding you about some of the basic things you have
forgotten while getting too intimate with BGP. :-)

Can IPX traffic be forwarded thru PIX?

2001-01-09 Thread sougata maitra

we are in the process of testing a PIX firewall 515R and all seems to work
fine in the IP realm.
we have netware servers (version 4x)running IPX still both on the inside and
the outside which need to commmunicate.
the documentation for PIX doesn't even use the word IPX !!

any ideas?

one thought is to make the netware servers run IP ..but how to make them
exchange (SAPs) or whatever it is under IP?

warm regards

RE: cisco & muscles

The best way to train for this kind of heavy lifting is gradually. Start
out by carrying Ciscopress books with you all the time. Add a laptop, and a
few more textbooks when you are ready. Before you know it, you will be able
to juggle a couple of 5500's like they were golf balls.

What are you talking about, that's easy, now holding a Catalyst 5509 in

Re: ip route question

2001-01-09 Thread Kevin Wigle

We are using this technique for the default route for a pair of routers
using HSRP where both are connected to the WAN through Ethernet emulation.

Since Ethernet isn't point-to-point (although the circuit may have no other
hosts) it is probable that if the remote WAN FastEthernet dies (or anywhere
in between), HSRP will not kick in because the local Ethernet connection is
still alive and talking to its first link - that being a hub/switch, foirl
or whatever.

Therefore, a "normal" default route to the next hop won't work 'cause it is
on a network that is configured and still alive on the local router. Even
if the remote router dies, the local router still thinks the route is good
because the local interface is up. Keepalives only go as far as the
hub/switch.

Therefore, we depend on OSPF redistributing the "normal" default and we
configure a floating static to the neighbor HSRP router. If the link fails
anywhere, OSPF routes are lost and then the floating static comes up. The
neighbor router has full routes as it is configured the same way.

The behavior showed up in the lab. We failed the remote router interface
and HRSP didn't work so we had to think on that one for awhile. Figuring
our why the default route didn't drop out of the routing table was
interesting since it is normal that if a destination isn't reachable then
the route should disappear.

On the interior interfaces we are using EIGRP and redist that into OSPF. We
don't redist OSPF into EIGRP so we don't get any routing loops. However,
using distribute lists should fix any routing loops you might have.

Re: VTP Domain, (again)

2001-01-09 Thread Stephen Skinner

Make sure you set the Biggest switch as a server, set up your next biggest
switch as server also .
Set the domain on the Server FIRST.
MAKE sure all VLAN info is correct..BEFORE you setup VTP.
Don`t do it until everyone has gone home (OVERTIME Tee Hee)
make the domain name MEAN somethinghelpfull later .
Check all CDP info beforehand (make sure all switches see eachother...if
there supposed to).
Store all Vlan info before.MAKE sure you know all about the VLAN`s
first...
IF you have diffrent info about different Vlan`s on different switches make
these switches all SERVER`S
DON`T PANIC!!

RE: cisco & muscles

2001-01-09 Thread Fowler, Joey

Actually my wife and co-workers have found it rather amusing as I carry my
laptop bag, with a 800 page ciscopress book and a 2501 & 3640 Router back
and forth from work to home. Sometimes I take the stairs in the parking
garage just for fun. I think it'll be a while before I'm ready to "juggle"
the 5500's in there though.

The best way to train for this kind of heavy lifting is gradually. Start
out by carrying Ciscopress books with you all the time. Add a laptop, and a

few more textbooks when you are ready. Before you know it, you will be able

to juggle a couple of 5500's like they were golf balls.

What are you talking about, that's easy, now holding a Catalyst 5509 in
place with one arm and screwing it into a rack that were the big muscles
come from. :)

The big muscles come from holding a 3640 in place with one arm and screwing
it into a rack with the other while trying not to drop the screws or the

Re: Accounting issue

2001-01-09 Thread ccarring

Mehmet,

The table is indexed by two values - cpmActiveCallStartTimeIndex and
cpmActiveCallSummaryIndex. From the CISCO-POP-MGMT-MIB:

cpmActiveCallSummaryEntry OBJECT-TYPE
SYNTAX CpmActiveCallSummaryEntry
MAX-ACCESS not-accessible
STATUS current
DESCRIPTION
"An entry in the Call Summary table."
INDEX {cpmActiveCallStartTimeIndex, cpmActiveCallSummaryIndex }

Thus, this entry will appear in the walk followed by the indices. In
your walk, the time index is the wacky number; the zero is there in case
multiple calls come in at the same tick. That's when you will see that
index increment:

enterprises.Cisco.10.19.1.3.1.1.3.26708849.0 = "paksoys"

If you want to add something to your Doyle book, get Halabi's
Internet Routing Architectures and, between the two of them, you
will be set for the Routing 2.0 exam. If most of the information is old

RE: ip route question

2001-01-09 Thread Stull, Cory

I could see how a routing loop could become an issue and the design isn't
perfect but its only temporary until we get a separate T1 to the internet
instead of right now its on the same frame-relay interface as the remote
sites.

I shouldn't have an issue in this case with routing loops because router a
will have all of the default routes pointed to it from the remote sites and
router a will have a default route to router b which has the connection to
the internet. The main worry I have is I'm wondering if I would need to
turn off icmp redirects on router a so it doesn't automagically say to the
remote sites to use router b because router b is actually closer to them.
Using the no icmp redirects.

Thanks again for all of the helpful insights.

H,
Not so sure if it is a good idea though !!!
I tried this one time at work where I inserted a
static route to a network more than one hop away,
although I had "re-distribute static" on the EIGRP
configured router it created a wonderful little
routing loop and I went home late again.

Regs,

Phil.

Re: eigrp, frame relay, and ISDN

2001-01-09 Thread Jim Barksdale

We do this on our network.

Do not pacify the BRI under EIGRP.
Instead define EIGRP as uninteresting traffic for the BRI.
Define a floating static to intiate the call with interesting traffic, then once the
ISDN is
up, EIGRP will flow across the link. If and when the primary link comes back up the
ISDN will time-out even if EIGRP flows across. Unteresting traffic does not reset the
IDLE timer.

Simple way to think about it is...
Only interesting traffic can initiate a call and reset the IDLE timer.
Uninteresting traffic can and will flow if the link is already up.

The part which makes it confusing...the definition of interesting and unteresting
traffic
looks just like an access list.

The difference is how you apply it to the interface
'dialer-group' vs 'access-group'

RE: Disappointed with ccnp!!

2001-01-09 Thread Sam Adams

You forget that lots of younger people switch careers too. And not all
young people started with computers when they were kids. And not all adults
switch careers because of the money. And you bet kids are worried about $$
unless they have their heads in a mound of sand.

There are too many generalizations based on a single anecdote.

It all depends on who you work for. I'm working for a
company in Sacramento making good pay and I only
currently have my CCNA with two years of hands-on.
Although I do have intensive practical experience with
Unix and Cisco routers.

If you work for the state or your county, you can make
a LOT of dough. They tend to overpay for most
positions. If you work for some smaller companies,
I've found that they will pay you much less for even
more work Shop around.

switch question

2001-01-09 Thread Perez, Robert

Hi all,
I have a question concerning Catalyst switches. I have two 3500's and one
1900 and when I try to release and renew an IP address on the 1900 it is
fine, but when I try on the 3500 it appears to drop the request. Is there
an IP-HELPER address on the switch such as there is on a router?

Re: ISDN Simulator - A Cheaper way

2001-01-09 Thread Kevin Wigle

don't know about his 'first" lab attempt, but his byline doesn't have CCIE
in it so he hasn't passed it no matter how many he's had..

not that that really means anything :-)

I agree, a simulator is on my acquisition list for this year too.

unfortunately, the idea of re-selling it on eBay probably won't work for
me. I hardly ever sell stuff off that get's into my lab!!

Re: VTP Domain, (again)

Only one switch in a domain can act as the server. All
others must be clients. The recommendation to set up
the 'biggest' switch as a server is OK, however, it is
not really necessary. If it works out, the server
should be the switch closest to the center of the VTP
domain. This will usually have the best/most
connections to the rest of the domain, which will
provide the best, central administration point. I
would also recommend that you standardize on all lower
case or all upper case for the VTP domain name, and
that you actively set version two assuming that all
devices in the domain support it.

I will note that I know quite a few administrators who
have just gone to transparent mode and forgo VTP. This
seems to be because they've been burned, especially in
the 3.x version of CatOS, which did have some bugs.
I'd recommend using it, but make sure you follow the
rules.

Re: switch question

2001-01-09 Thread Dennis

you will want to turn on portfast on all the ports that are connected to
single hosts on the 3500. Do not turn it on for ports connected to multiple
hosts (hubs, other switches, routers.)

this is going to allow the port to bypass listening and learning and go
directly to forwarding traffic.

If possible, also disable auto negotiation for speed and duplex and set it
to the appropriate speed/duplex for each port.

This will solve your DHCP request problem for hosts connected to the 3500.

Here is a helpful link.. http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/12.html

RE: Disappointed with ccnp!!

2001-01-09 Thread Denis A. Baldwin

I have to agree, but from the other side of the scope. I'm 20 and got into
it because I loved it, but also because I wanted the money. When I got into
computers (about 9 years ago), I really wanted to be rich and powerful. I
grew up in a lower-class family (sub 25k/year) and I didn't want to live
like that. I started mowing lawns why I was 12 to get the money that I
could prove against my peers. I mowed 60 lawns a week and went to school.
Lots of good money, almost $40k year actually, but I hated the work. Then I
got really heavily into computers.

As for people switching gears, I often find that young people are even more
into switching than older folks. The trends tends to show that from 18-25,
people will switch careers (or atleast physical jobs) from 3-4 times. That
is pretty typical.

You forget that lots of younger people switch careers too. And not all
young people started with computers when they were kids. And not all adults
switch careers because of the money. And you bet kids are worried about $$
unless they have their heads in a mound of sand.

There are too many generalizations based on a single anecdote.

RE: ISDN Simulator

2001-01-09 Thread Louie Belt

I agree, you need real ISDN. Everyone I've talked with sees ISDN on day 1
in the lab. (I just failed my lab by a couple of points, but not due to a
lack of ISDN knowledge - But at least I made it to Day 2 )

I'm putting my ISDN simulator up for sale on eBay today. It's a Teltone
ILS-2000 (not the cheaper demonstrator) purchased new 6 months ago for
$2800.00. It has 2 S/T and 2 U ISDN connections, is software configurable
for different switch types and spids. It emulates NI-1, AT&T Custom, DMS
Custom, and ETSI (European) Switch types. It comes with software, serial
cable, and manuals.

For more info on it go to:
http://www.teltone.com/telecom_solutions/sales_demo/salesdemo_ils2000_featur
es.html

I use my lab for customer support as well as CCIE studies so I'm upgrading
my lab to an ADTRAN so I can emulate various T1's, PRI's and BRI's all in
one box.

Buy a real one if you are planning on going for the CCIE. You will need it.
You could rent the lines but it is like pouring money down the drain
because you will not get it back. You can resell your used simulator for
the same as you paid for it after your done with it!

Bear in mind, the CCIE lab retest schedule is approaching 6 months. If you
fail it the first time you are going to have to rent those lines for quite a
bit longer than you expected to originally. With setup fee's and monthly
charges you could pay up to $500.00 for six months. If you need them longer,
keep adding monthly charges to that number!

BTW, with the inclusion of IPSec in the CCIE lab you may also want to invest
in a telephone line simulator too. Teltone makes a number of decent ones.

Expect to pay close to $1600.00 for a Teltone ISDN demonstrator, used or
new, and the Telco sim will be between 200 and 500 depending on the model.

Most importantly for CCIE candidates, the sim products cannot do a fraction
of the scenarios you will need to know for the CCIE.

Think of is as an insurance policy against lack of ISDN knowledge!

Warning for all looking for employment international!!!

2001-01-09 Thread John Doe

Hello,

I am sending out this message because I think that people need to be aware
of certain companies looking to recruit from the US and Canada.

I am writing specifically about Axioma in the Netherlands. I've seen some
other postings on this web site about them. Some bad flames and some
innocent questions. Let me start by saying that I used to work for Axioma.
I will not disclose the time period that I worked for them.

For all of those who are looking at Axioma, or who have had interviews with
them in the US or Holland or those of you who are thinking of signing a
contractListen Up! Axioma is not the grand company that they make
themselves out to be. They lost lots of money in 2000 because of people who
have skipped out of town or people who decided at the last minute to not
move over. In a 1 month period, 4 people left the company. In a period of
1 year, there have been appox. 20 employees hired from the US/Canada. Right
now, there are 5 left. Everyone who has left Axioma has been unhappy.
Thier reasons are very justified. Axioma has promised alot of great things.
Unfortunatly, they never came through with thier promises. The company
can see only $$ signs. They do not care for the individual. In the past,
Axioma has forgotten to pay people. They have gone so far as to come up
with lies to try and get money from us. For example, 1 employee gave a 30
day notice. They threatened to not pay this person for thier last month
because this employee was "on the bench". Another situation - another
employee gave thier 1 month notice, and Axioma tried to make them pay 1,000
USD to them because Axioma said that they have to pay for bench time. (Bench
time or being on the bench just means that you are in between contracts.
You are still a permenant employee at Axioma. They just don't have a
contract for you and you are not making any money for them.) Does it sound
like people are on the bench alot?? One employee sat on the bench for 3
months when he first arrived. Axioma could not him a job.

Another point I want to make. Most people are looking at Axioma for a Cisco
position. Think again. Out of 20 employees in 2000, only 1 has had a
decent Cisco position. Others have had to do help desk, operational work or
documention. This is not a good opportunity if you are trying to get ahead
in the Cisco field. The chances are very great that you will be placed in a
position that is not Cisco-centric. Everyone who has come over to work for
Axioma, came very disillusioned and found out the hard way what Axioma was
all about. I am sending this email because I think people deserve to know
what goes on at Axioma. For those who are scheduled to move over, I urge
you to seriously consider this. It is not easy moving to another country,
and Axioma isn't very helpful in this matter. They expect you to be an
adult and take care of transitional things are your own. For example, phone
hookup, driving, getting around, permits, etc. Don't let them fool you by
saying that they will take care of the permits. There have been too many
people to count who have come and gone and never even had a work permit or a
residence permit. 1 person left after 6 months, and still didn't have any
of these things.

I'm sorry this email is a little long. But I really think that people need
to be warned of Axioma. My best advice, look to another company if you are
hell-bent on working in Holland.

RE: Disappointed with ccnp!!

2001-01-09 Thread Sam Adams

Everyone's story is different. I switched from accounting to computers
three years ago and I have not regretted the move. Why did I switch?
Because I live and breath the stuff. The pay was a little more in computers
but the work is much more rewarding. I even worked for a big five and had
opportunities to go back to the accounting world but turned down the
opportunity in a heartbeat.

As we go up the ladder we will see that our salaries are comparable to other
professionals at the same level experience wise. What will keep us in the
industry is the desire to learn, and love of the profession.

Good luck in your endeavors.

Does anyone have the config for setting up policy routing on an RSFC,
need to divert port 80 traffic into another VLAN without having escape
out the default gateway?

Protocol numbers

2001-01-09 Thread Shane Stockman

I see in the BSCN courseware they mention something about protocol number
for example igrp=9 and RIP has a UDP port of 520. Does anyone know where I
could get a list of the numbers for protocols. I have searched Cisco.com but
could not find.

Thanks

RE: CCDA Exam

2001-01-09 Thread Croyle, James

I usually don't do this, but I have to disagree that this test was hard. I
thought it was very straight forward, but... I did go into it with the
understanding that I should COMPLETELY document the case study because I
would be referring to it many times. I can't remember the stats... if
anyone even cares, but I finished the test in about 75 or 80 min with a
840ish, and when I hit finish, I knew I hads passed. And I surely don't
have that much design experience, only put together one network with about
60 switches and routers, and no low end stuff, no ISDN, an minimal multiple
site configuration. But then again... I love tests!;-)

Jim

PS This is not a hurrah for Jim post, just a document EVERYTHING in the
case study, and don't read into the questions...

Hi Tariq,
I sat my CCDA at the end of last year, at the time I was a CCNA and my
friend was a CCNP ?!! We both sat it at the same time, and it is a very
difficult exam, not if you know the cisco exam requirements, but mainly
because the case studies are so time consuming. An indication is that after
1 hour in the exam I was on question 25 ?!! I finished the exam with 4
minutes to spare, and my colleague only just finished. There was a lot of
questions on WAN protocols, but I am sure if you study hard it won't be a
problem, the only real problem with this exam is the time it takes to read
the case studies I had 4 different cases in my exam. Good luck and I
hope I have been of help

You might want to take a look at stanford uni.'s online MSEE in
telecommunications. Im planning on doing a masters after the CCIE as
well and that looks quite good if I can get the company to pay for it as
I could carry on working while doing it.

FW: ISDN Simulator - A Cheaper way

2001-01-09 Thread Brett . Bartow

Well, the only one I know of is the one we publish:

Cisco Interactive Mentor Access ISDN
ISBN: 1587200252

I could be wrong about there not being others out there, but I haven't seen any for
ISDN. Of course, Mentor Labs has some ISDN dial-up labs on ISDN also.
