Hi Dick,
As André said, this a bug on Pootle. If you use an external tool to
translate, these strings won't appear in the tool, only if you edit
the file with an application like gedit or the like, you will see
the .txt file structure.
The strings were used on the UI but they have been migrated to
cui.po. Why they are kept here? I don't know, may be we could
discuss this. Your translation memory should have them any way if
you choose to use it.

Thanks SOPHIE,
I understand but my main point is that it shouldn't be visible in
Pootle at all.

That means that it is to be corrected.

Yes, you're right so this bug has to be reported to the Pootle team.

I forwarded this issue to Friedel who is the Pootle developer.
Let's wait for his reply if it's a known bug.

Friedel and a number of other Pootle coders have been in Egypt at
Pootlemania for a code sprint. He is back so I'm sure he'll chip in
today if needed.

I've had a quick look at the issue and I'll try summarise then explain
the issue so that everyone gets an idea of what's going on even if you
don't care for code!

Here is the bug that I've raised to track this:
http://bugs.locamotion.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1114

Issue
=
These strings are being presented by Pootle because Pootle is seeing
obsolete messages (marked as #~ in PO files) as untranslated.

There is nothing wrong with the PO files which is why translators who
are using offline tools are not seeing the issue.

Fix
===
Fortunately I don't think the fix will be too hard and it will probably
be easy to patch the OOo Pootle server. I'm hopeful that we'll be able
to have a fix before the end of today. So you might not need to try
any of the following workarounds.

Workaround
==
1) Ignore these messages with no source text until we fix the issue.
2) Try work offline by downloading and uploading PO files to Pootle.
(There have been a few suggestions of possible tools, you can also try
out Virtaal http://virtaal.org/)

Issue in more detail

Pootle uses the Translate Toolkit to do much of its manipulation of PO
files. We did a major work in the Translate Toolkit for v1.4 where we
removed the old KDE style comments and replaced them with proper Gettext
msgctxt.

The change was important as it meant that we got proper PO files for
OpenOffice.org and did away with the non-standard KDE comments. Many PO
editors didn't understand KDE comments and it could lead to translators
being confused and translating the KDE comment instead of ignoring them.

It was an invasive change, we knew that, but the benefits were great.
We tested quite extensively doing roundtrip test but unfortunately it
seemed the change has impacted our code that tracks the state of a
string. I.e. whether a string is translated, fuzzy, untranslated or
obsolete. The toolkit is now seeing an obsolete message with msgctxt as
untranslated when it should be ignoring them completely.

Pootle relies on this state information to find untranslated strings and
is thus finding them and presenting them to you even though they should
be ignored.

The bad news is that our battery of unit tests didn't check for this
condition so it slipped through in our changes.

The fix should be as simple as to ensure that obsolete messages with a
msgctxt field are not seen as untranslated.

Please feel free to join the bug but I'm sure we'll announce the fix on
the list.

I shall probably proceed off line and will (as you and Andre

not loose them, but be able to ignore them safely :)

And yes, I will also have to make my terminology project appear in

Sorry for you waiting for long time.

However, as I explained in my previous mail to you, we are able to
proceed Pootle integration once the responsible person of Albanian is
officially changed to make sure that one united Albanian team is working
for OO.o.
I have been waiting for further update on the official change of

submit an issue (as you did) and assign it to Aijin, and cc: fma, vg
and ihi asking to have the fixes integrated.

Sorry, but to me this process seems to be wrong (or even broken by
design).

Why should we manually file issues, if all the information are already
there in our tool? E.g pootle can be configured to use version
tracking - so it is quite easy to track what translation files have
been changed.

For me as a translator the leading system is *my* translation
repository - what currently is pootle. The application has to use all
these translations. To file an additional issue is nothing but
duplicate work (as said all the information can be retrieved from our
tools, if configured correctly).

I think that was previous process-fix in pootle and submit an issue.

Refaella listed some ideas to enhance current process and she also
mentioned that:
2) from now on we will be delivering to release engineering diffs files
only via web interface. That means that the verification of translation
integration both in case of major handoffs or later l10n fixes could be
done by using these diffs without the need of submitting lots of l10n
issues.

Pootle is already using version control tool and we'll deliver changes
to the release engineering.

Regards,
Aijin

Btw. I really don't understand why our translation are only merged
partially and not all the translations are used. This only ads some
hiden magic to the process and makes it very hard to identify the
root cause of a problem.

Best,

André

Re: [l10n-dev] Entire Vietnamese translation cross review

2009-02-12 Thread Aijin Kim

Hi Nguyen Vu Hung,

Vietnamese, and probably Japanese, Korean and Chinese as well
have a big problem in word segmentation that prevents pootle from
making a good terminology.

At least in Vietnamese, the feature suggested terminology in pootle
is quite useless. We have to use an external dictionary.

Terminology is managed by each lang team. If you think current
terminology is useless, you can try to revise the terminology po files
in the terminology project.

Regards,
Aijin

  * If you can download the ZIP file with all PO files, you can perhaps
have a look at poconflicts in the Translate Toolkit
http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/toolkit/poconflicts

Poconflicts reads all translations in multiple files and look for
conflicting translations (same English but different translations). You can
also reverse the testing to see if different English strings were
translated with the same text (in other words, if some ambiguous
translations were used).

Seems like nice tool.I will try later.

groups some open source projects. Our team interested in
localization of openoffice.org.
How we can start localization process? Who can open Kirghiz section
on pootle server for our language?

I'm the Pootle administrator and can help you add Kirghiz to Pootle
if you want.

Before creating a project in Pootle, I'd recommend you to discuss
with your team how will you start localization work. Pootle is one of
the methods of OO.o localization (though many teams are working with
Pootle) and you can choose a preferred process.

And you also can consider setting up a Native-Language project. Here
is the list of current Native-Language projects:

Wiki page of localization status:

And here Pootle user guide:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Pootle_User_Guide

Hope this helps you.

Regards,
Aijin

Thanks,
Timur Zhamakeev.

It doesn't matter what strings or how many there are. It's a matter
of principle. New string(s) should not appear after the translation
delivery deadline. Ever.
Major releases are great for marketing and translators are trying
their best to polish translations from previous major release.

Best regards
I completely agree with you. But now we have this issue and we need to
find a solution. We have basically 2 possibilities:

1) close the eyes and leave with the fact that we have approx 500
untranslated words in the final product that we will fix in the 3.2
release (which, honestly, I cannot recommend)
2) translate the approx. 500 words and ask all the teams to redeliver
by August 7th and postpone the RC 1-2 weeks.

I would recommend all the native-language teams to start updating
their translations based on m27 and start redelivering as soon as
ready (no later than August 7th) not to lose any additional time.

Pootle content on sunvirtuallab will be updated on Thusday, July 31st.
In case of terminology works please have all corrected files uploaded
to Pootle by Wednesday, July 30th COB CET.

Thanks,
Rafaella

This process is *very* inefficient. The correct process should be the
same as for the translations. Right now, community (in your sense of
that word) should fix the error twice:

Actually, translation teams only need to fix once in the attached sdf as
I apply the fixes to Pootle.

- in the SDF attached to the issue (which itself is nonsense, as we
use PO files for translations!)

However I guess all the teams run gsicheck on the converted sdf after
translation?

- in the PO file in Pootle

Please continue the discussion on the pootle or tools list or how it
is named ;-)

Sure, we can discuss how to improve the process on the tools list.

It's been a huge effort, and at times I thought we'd never get there.
Lavish thanks and appreciation to the brave first-time translators who
each took on some of those complex strings:

Nguyễn Định Trung
Đỗ Thị Hảo
Ngô Huy Hoàng
Nguyễn Công Ngọc Sơn
Nguyễn Thị Thanh Nhàn
Nguyễn Thùy Trang
Nguyễn Văn Bách
Phan Trọng Khanh

and especially to Trung [1], who talked the rest into it. ;)

So, to anyone who is still struggling away at that huge and frankly
confusing corpus: it can be done. Even if you're critically short of
person-power and experience. Just keep at it. If we can do it, you can
do it.

There were so many times when I blinked out of tired, bleary eyes at
all the strings left to translate, at the sheer amount of work left to
do, and wondered why on earth I was putting my personal time into what
seemed at the time like a thankless and certainly tedious task. But it
all feels worth it now. It certainly does! :)

Hi,

You don't need to upload the Pootle content we already do that and before
we start we announce it to this list. Details on the schedule can be found
at:
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Translation_for_3.0#Translation_Schedule_for_Pootle_Users

I am waiting for Aijin to confim when she is will able to update the Pootle
content to a) announce this to the list and 2) to update the translation
schedule for Pootle users and non-Poolte users.

Does that mean that it is impossible to create an own SDF for Pavel's
builds at the moment? Or is Pavel also using Pootle data directly?

If you want to create an sdf for yourself, you can do it. But Pootle
content will be update with m12 on next Monday and after update, you
simply can download and convert them with en-US.sdf of m12. That's why
we recommend to wait for the update is completed.

I don't think Pavel uses Pootle data directly.

Thanks,
Aijin

I have tried to build an SDF with the en-US.sdf from m3 and m12 (and
corrected the helpcontent2 path), but in both cases I get thousands of
errors (No source language entry defined!)

Erdal

That's pretty old, nearly two months. Are you sure that's the right

The last update of Pootle content was for the 3rd hand-off of OO.o 3.0.
I'm planning to update Pootle with the latest milestone soon. (today or
tomorrow), then I think you don't have to convert them with the
DEV300_m3. Is it ok for you to wait for the update?

Thanks,
Aijin

Also, if this is the correct milestone, where can I find the en_US.sdf
file? Pavel's server only has DEV300_m9-m11, and BEA300_m1-m2.

Thanks again for the help. :)

Hi Clytie,

Current Pootle content was updated with DEV300_m3 milestone on March 13th.
Pootle update is schedules in near future. However if you want to update
for yourself, please use DEV300_m3 en_US.sdf.

Thanks,

I still think I have a mismatch between the en_US.sdf file

When I run the conversion po2oo, there are pages and pages listing
individual strings that can't be found in the template. e.g.

msgid This identifier is used to detect the file type on import.
msgstr Dấu nhận dạng này được dùng để phát hiện kiểu tập tin khi nhập

So somehow the DEV300_m10 en_US.sdf file and the current Pootle files
don't match. :(

Has anyone else done the po2oo conversion in the last day or so with
current Pootle files?

I've never had this problem before. Usually, my Toolkit processes work

Oh boy, just to late.

Merged all into Pootle last three days using MERGE option.
Hope I didn't disrupt anything :-(

The reason we recommend to use overwrite option instead of merge is that
merge process takes much resource and longer time, and it may cause
overload to the Pootle server if several users simultaneously work on
Pootle.

If you could successfully upload the files with merge option, it should
be ok. And I guess it was a good decision to upload them a few days
prior to the deadline, then you could avoid the peak time. ;)

Just polishing things up a bit now.

I can see you're working on the Pootle from the log.:) During work on
Pootle, you could get better performance if you execute functions at sub
directories or even one file instead of whole project. Smaller area of
execution is better.

You should upload a ZIP file in the same folder that you downloaded it
from. This should work, and both merge and overwrite mode should be
supported. Note that with ZIP files, overwrite mode is still done file
per file. It shouldn't touch other files in the project that didn't
occur in the ZIP file.

If you are downloading the ZIP from
http://www.sunvirtuallab.com:32300/ja/helpcontent2/swriter/
you will get the files with no directories in the ZIP file. Your ZIP
file should then look the same if you upload it to the same place, or
you could put everything in to a folder called 'swriter' and upload it
from here
http://www.sunvirtuallab.com:32300/ja/helpcontent2/

For large uploads, sending them to Aijin might be better for several
reasons anyway, but I thought I'll just explain how it works.

support it quite well, I think, most other tools that don't support it

I guess what Ain mentioned was that 'msgctxt' option during oo2po saves

Since the string is a msgid it is handled as a source string and is

Hi JC,

Thanks a lot for your kind explanation.
So you mean that you manually delete the msgid_comment part from each
target string?
If so, it should be better that source string doesn't include the
msgid_comment line in source string to avoid additional work, right?

Now, I'm thinking if we need to use msgctxt style. Ain has confirmed
that poedit supports it. I'm not sure about OmegaT.
If OmegaT also supports msgctxt, it'd be good to change the format of po

your translation?

As far as OmegaT is concerned, yes. But OmegaT is even weirder than
that :)

Basically, OmegaT has been conceived for translating documents,
monolingual documents. Not for working with intermediate localization
formats.

Basically it works that way:
• It first parses the file, keeps the structure (skeleton) part in
memory and puts all the translatable strings to the display.
• The translator goes through segments one by one and types the
translation by also referring to the available translation memories
and glossaries.
• When the translator wants to see the result, the translated files
are build by using the skeleton in memory and by filling in with the
translated strings. Anything that has not been translated is left with
the source values.

The problem with PO or XLIFF etc, it is that the skeleton of the
file has placeholders already for source and target. Which means that
OmegaT should read what it sees in source, consider what is already in
target and put the translation in target if necessary. PO includes in
itself sort of a TM function by adding fuzzy strings and by
keeping the whole legacy translation in itself. In OmegaT this TM part
is handled totally separately because monolingual documents are not
supposed to come with such embedded data, at least not in the current
CAT world.

In the case of PO files, it needs to have empty msgstr so that it can
pretend to work as for a normal monolingual document by considering
exclusively the contents of msgid, and even if the msgstr is not empty
it just ignores its contents (future developments are aiming at
putting that contents automatically in TM):

The process is then: parse what is in msgid, display for translation,
and _rewrite_ the whole file with msgid=msgstr for places that have
not been translated yet...

Which is the reason why OmegaT is perfect for HTML, ODF and whatever
is monolingual and works on a _document_ basis (cf the NetBeans l10n
process), but not so good for intermediate or pre-processed formats
(like the OOo and other PO based l10n processes).

Eventually, the dev team will work on the issue of intermediate
formats. But right now OmegaT will work best with proper msgid and
empty msgstr, with all the legacy contents put in TMX or glossaries.
That is what OmegaT is good at handling :)

JC

Thanks,
Aijin

Re: [l10n-dev] Thoughts of how to improve Pootle performance

2008-02-20 Thread Aijin Kim

Hi Alexandro,

Thanks a lot for sharing this info.

Currently, I feel the most critical cause of Pootle slowdown is that
Pootle processing itself for handling large files. And find ways to
improve the performance of the processing.

However, obviously, it is worthwhile to try all the possibilities. :)

Thanks again,
Aijin

100% and the server doesn't accept a new request until it's available

There would be two ways to be considered for the performance

1. Increase resource

2. Decrease workload of the server machine

We're trying to find any possibility to resolve this issue and going to
apply some of them to the server machine soon. I hope those tries can
provide better performance, however I'm not sure yet how much will the
performance are improved.

As I mentioned above, OO.o content itself is huge, therefore it may
naturally take much resource/long time.
So when you work on Pootle, it'd be worthwhile to try to execute
functions with a small unit (per one folder or one file) rather than
whole project. It may give better performance not only to you but also
other users.

I'll keep update you on the further progress.

By February 19th you need to make sure that all files translated so
far are uploaded to Pootle. You don't need to have all approx. 2
words translated by that date. What you need to make sure is to have
all files downoladed AND translated so far uploaded to Pootle.

Actually to be more precise, I should have said:

*Translation Schedule for Pootle Users:*

January 30th - 1st Translation Handover: January 30th - YOU CAN START

February 19th - upload all complete translated files and stop

February 20th - Pootle update with new content
February 21st - you can start translating again
March 12th - upload all complete translated files and stop translating
March 13th - Pootle update with new content

April 3rd - Final translation delivery

Hi Alexandro,

I strongly recommend that you upload your work with 'overwrite' option

You don't have to finish all the translation for the 1st hand-off, but
need to make sure all your done work to be uploaded to Pootle. I'm going
to start updating Pootle with new content on 2/21 morning. I'll waif for

That was yesterday evening, see :

But from what I understand, you will still be able to translate those
strings later on, only all the files you have touched should be on

And yes Pootle was freezing yesterday evening. My advice would be :
keep all the work off line and only upload the files when you have
finished the work. This works better for me than trying to review the

Anyways tzhe change would be to have a formated string in the 3. field

It should look like this:

Would that break anybodys processes?

Hi Reiko,
Please see my supplementary comments below.

Alexandro Colorado 쓴 글:

When I tried with my private email address,

They should work with SUN.com but maybe there is some middleware
rejecting it as spam

A sendmail issue of Pootle was already solved and it works both for sun
and non-sun address.
I've tested myself and confirmed that it works with sun address, I also
doubt some configuration issue as Alexandro mentioned. Can you please
check again with your mail configuration?

Let me ask three more questions. I've read user guide
but could not understand the following sections:

1. Menu names

Translating with Pootle
...
* Click on 'Quick Translate' or 'Translate All'.

I cannot find those menues in my editing fuctions.
Is this because of my permission ?

Yes, you need a proper permission. I can see you have two accounts,
'reiko' and 'reikos'. Could you let me know which one will you use so
that I can give you proper permission and remove unused one?
BTW, Will you be a project admin of Japanese in Pootle? If so, I'll set
the project admin right for you.

All I see is Show Goals, Show My Strings,
Show Untranslated, and Zip Folder.

2. How to Import/Export ?

If we want to work on OmegaT or other editor,
how can we export the files in .xlf or .po ?
Also how can we import (upload) the files
back to Pootle ?

I'm updating the user guide right now, and you'll be able to see the
section of 'Translating Off-line' soon.
Briefly, you can download the contents by file, folder or goal if you
have 'archive' permission. And you can upload files with a 'upload'
button on the right side of the web page.

I'll get back to you with updated guide. :)

3. Translation Memory

As Paolo asked on 2/3, Updated TM would be a big help.
Could anybody send the updated memory ? Rafaella ?

I think Rafaella is able to help on this.

Rafaella,
Is it possible to provide update TMs?

Thanks,

Let me share with you some information regarding translation
schedule and estimated volume we will need to localize

*Release schedule for OpenOffice.org 3.0 release:*
http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/OOoRelease30
*
Final Translation Delivery Date:*
April 3rd, 2008

*Estimated New/Changed Translation Volume for 3.0 - 1st handoff*
GUI + Help: 20,000 words (compared to a full localized 2.4 OOo
version)

*Languages Uploaded to Pootle (sunvirtuallab):*
http://www.sunvirtuallab.com:32300/projects/openoffice_org/

*Translation Schedule for Pootle Users:*
There will be 3 handovers:
1st Translation Handover: January 30th - YOU CAN START WORKING :-)
2nd Translation Handover: February 20th
3rd Translation Handover: March 13th

IMPORTANT: before each handover it is important that complete
translated files are uploaded to Pootle. It is NOT important that
you translate everything but please make sure you upload all you
have translated so far to Pootle (otherwise you may risk to lose
the translated content or to overwrite the content of the second
handoff with old translation).
After the Pootle content gets updated with the second handoff
you'll need to go to Pootle and download the files you want to
translate.

I will send out reminders when the second and third translation
handover dates are approaching.
