From: Charles Harpole [EMAIL PROTECTED] Date: Thu, 20 Sep 2007 03:41:03 + I still think a ham radio the size and shape of a flat panel display... where the controls are spread out, plentiful, and large over a big panel space would sell well. You will probably be able to have this with the K3- since everything can be controlled by software, you can have the display as large as you want, and the pushbuttons could all be touch screen functions; and it would be easy enough to have a box of knobs to control the radio via the same software. Maybe I'll need that capability in a few years, but for now, I think the K3 is very close to the ideal size. 73, doug ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. [Elecraft] K3 KAT3 auto tune
One K3 question I'm interested in knowing the answer to: will it be possible to assign different KAT3 behaviour to the two antenna positions so that the KAT3 tunes automatically when you hit TUNE in one position, but only transmits a carrier and displays the SWR in the other? I'm thinking of the situation where one antenna has a remote auto tuner or needs to be manually tuned. With the K2 you have to toggle ANT A/B and then go into the menu and switch the tuner between Auto and Cal S, which makes quick switching between antennas impossible. -- Julian, G4ILO K2 s/n: 392 K3 s/n: ??? Re: [Elecraft] K3 - very cool feature.
What might also be cool (maybe in the future) is being able to store the actual setting of the memory option in the programmable button. So, instead of pressing M1 and then turning VFOa to pick the value and then pressing Menu to store it (I assume that is what is required). You store that Menu option X = value Y You could store a specific setting on TAP M1 and a different setting on HOLD M1 and no need to press any other key, and just toggle between them. As I don't have a K3 yet, I don't know if I might use 2 values of a menu menu option in this way, perhaps not. On 20/9/07 01:47, Greg [EMAIL PROTECTED] sent: The programmable keys can be used for easy access to menu settings. Enter MENU or CONFIG and select the item you want to assign to the key, then HOLD PF1 or PF2 to program that menu item to that key. You can do the same with the M1-4 buttons instead of messages (you can mix and match too). But with the M1-4 keys you can program both TAP and HOLD giving you up to 8 more programmable keys. -- When you want to test the depths of a stream, don't use both feet. -Chinese Proverb ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. If you need finely tuned settings, you should probably set the filter using a spectrum display, with white noise input, e.g. using the spectrogram method. You can probably use your digital mode terminal program instead of spectrogram. I think it is probably safer to treat the displayed bandwidth as an (approximately) monotonic function of true bandwidth, rather than measuring the actual bandwidth. -- David Woolley Emails are not formal business letters, whatever businesses may want. [Elecraft] Keeping Paddles In Place
Hi All, I have found that even the slightest tendency for my paddle to move (or wobble) can really affect the accuracy of my sending. The faster you send, the more important it is for the paddle to be firmly anchored. At home I have a couple of Begali paddles, and they just don't move! But when I travel, I take paddles which, although good paddles, are not quite as substantial. Also, as many of you have pointed out, the rubber feet on many paddles are not very good. Besides being hard and often getting slick as they age, I don't think they give you enough contact surface. The shelf liner suggestion is a good one. If you get the right kind, it really helps keep your paddle (and lots of other things too) in place. I don't know how many kinds there are, but commonly I see two kinds. One has kind of a fat, bubbly surface and looks rather smooth. The other seems a bit thinner, and the pattern looks more irregular. This latter type is what you want. I think it's even cheaper. The type with the fat bubbles just doesn't seem to grab as well, while the thinner type grabs a surface much better. I also use this stuff on my dashboard and console in vehicles. Tnx for tip on non skid material, Don. And tnx to you, Tree for the response you sent earlier. I have really enjoyed your earlier posts. There is another source of non skid matl other than the grocery store stuff and it might even be better. I find it at WalMart in the RVcamping section, in the form of a roll. It is very sticky, and more rubbery than the shelf liner material I have seen in grocery stores. The RV kind is specifically designed to prevent things from slipping while travelling. I have seen it in blue and tan colors. The RV type is what I use under paddles. Another possibility is tool box liner material, sold by Sears in the automobile/tool dept, but it is not as sticky as the RV. [Elecraft] Keeping Paddles In Place
There have been quite a few good solutions posted here to keep your paddles from wandering aroundanother that I use is a Sticky Pad. I got mine at RadioShack and I've seen them at other stores as well. It is designed to put on your dashboard so that keys, cell phones, etc. will not slide off. The bottom has a sticky surface that keeps the pad itself anchored, and the top surface is rather soft and rubbery, so a paddle like a Bencher absolutely does not move around. You can remove the pad and wash it if it gets dirty and I have not had it damage anything yet. 73 de John, WB4GLJ ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] Keeping Paddles In Place
My solution to keeping paddles in place is even easier. Don't touch them. My paddles don't move a mm, ever. They sit there, neatly packed away in their box waiting for the day I return to machine generated CW. In the interim, I have my 2 straight keys and the bug hooked up to the rig. Oh, and I keep the bug in place by using some of that thin rubbery shelf liner stuff. RE: [Elecraft] Hex-Key vs Kent paddle?
I've never used the Hex-key. I've owned several Bencher BY paddles and liked them. Or I did, until I got my Kent. I love the Kent paddle. It is a much nicer machine to operate than the BYs.The BY paddles have a bit of give to them, a bit of flex. They do work FB but only if you don't compare them to better stuff. The Kent is very solid. The move smoothly and have a positive closure. No spongy feel, no give, just solid. Also, the Kent paddles are individually adjustable for spacing and spring force. The adjustments are easy to make and stay set so I'm not fiddling with it all the time. My only concern is the vertical bearings which are exposed to the air dust. I keep the paddles covered to keep them clean and running smoothly. I got my Kent paddles off e-bay for about $80. If nobody else responds to this (it's more than likely they will), I will verify this evening and post the results. The current firmware version makes ATU AUTO/BYPASS the same for both ANT1 and ANT2, but it could certainly be made sticky to each one. When you get home this evening you could add it to The List. 73, Ed - W0YK ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] XV50: Building my first XV
Hi, JT. You'll find building the XV50 a snap after building the K2. It's a much simpler piece of equipment, of course, and most of the circuitry is laid out on one spacious pc board. Ron AC7AC -Original Message- Are the Elecraft XV's any more difficult to build than a K2? To my surprise and limited skills, I was able to build my K2 along with several options successfully with only minor difficulties. My soldering job isn't the cleanest in the world but the rig works as spec'd. However, with that said, I could see my soldering improving as I progressed from stage to stage. My biggest problem is feeding too much solder into the joint. I think I need to switch to a smaller diameter solder. I'd like to procure an XV50 around the first week of October. However, this will be cutting it close time wise for it's intended purpose; the 50MHz Sprint on October 20th. However, this shouldn't be much of a problem as I am currently disabled and have more time than I know what to do with lately. RE: [Elecraft] Printing Quickstart Guide
Actually, K3 S/N 10 has been to bits and back about 20 times, at least, so far and it's in bits again as I check changes and test alternatives that make assembly easier. I've been itching as much as anyone to put it on the air, but that'll wait until my work is done and the folks with orders pending have their rigs in hand. Tom's assembly time estimate looks good, depending upon the options purchased. The options are integrated into the main build sequence as far as possible so you don't have to go back and open up the rig to add something you bought with the original kit. But even adding options later is pretty simple. Most of them just plug into the main RF board that fills the bottom of the K3 enclosure and, when needed, the nifty Elecraft 2D fastener system lets you pull a side panel or other cover off easily to get access to part of the rig without pulling the whole thing to bits. As others have noted, the front panel looks the most intimidating but it's really a pussycat. The front panel, with the LCD display and all the switch matrices pre-installed, mounts to the sheet metal front. then the DSP boards mount on the back of the front panel board and the whole package plugs into the main chassis. Anyone who finds something in the procedure confusing is welcome to gripe to me directly at [EMAIL PROTECTED] or just grumble publicly here. The main reason I watch the reflector is to pick up points where builders have questions about the projects I've been involved with so we can think about how the manual might make it more straightforward. When you ask questions on the reflector I answer them on the reflector where everyone can see them. I've found that no one has a unique question. There's always someone else who is looking for the answer too, but who hasn't asked yet. Several list members like Tom, N0SS, Dave Ferrington, M0XDF, Gary Hvizdak and others have taken the time to read and comment on the preliminary manuals. Tom did a trial build, tearing his K3 to bits then rebuilding it, and Dave has kept a close eye on my work to make sure my Yank English is intelligible to folks in the U.K. And, of course, Wayne is managing the overall documentation effort and writes most of the Operating instructions. The Quickstart is pure Wayne, based on initial reactions to his K3 Owner's Manual. I'm always grateful for comments and suggestions. Wayne set very high standards with the original K2 assembly manual. He and I have been working for years to keep raising that standard so more people are comfortable building their rigs. After all, the company does promote Hands on Ham Radio and they take seriously their promise We want to make sure everyone succeeds! Why? Because he was apparently going to be involved in the manual preparation! Makes sense. I'm guessing I know who that might be too, although Vic didn't identify the person. Isn't Ron, AC7AC, the one who does a lot of that??? Yep.. Ron did it so he could write the manual. I'm not certain he has his K3 COMPLETELY back together yet...heheh! I also took my K3 down to the nuts 'n screw level... well... someone (me) had to Field Test the Assembly Manual...!!! Actually, the 'teardown' took 50 minutes, and the reassembly took about 3 to 3-1/2 hours. BUT, for new 'assemblers' plan on 5-6 hours... taking the rig 'down' gave me a LOT of pre-assembly knowledge that you'll not have the benefit of when you do a from the ground up build of your K3 kit. 73, Tom N0SS ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. RE: [Elecraft] XV: Coax for interfacing
The signals between the XV and your K2 are all below 30 MHz, no matter which transverter you are using. The K2 feeds 10 meter RF to the XV which then up-converts it to 50, 144, 222 or 432 MHz (depending upon the transverter), and then the incoming RF from the antenna is down-converted in the transverter to 10 meters and sent to the K2. So anything that's reasonable for short runs between the XV and K2 on 10 meters is fine. The K3 was tested on an identical set up which has been correlated with the ARRL's. The ARRL changed to this more accurate phase noise test set up with the IC7000 Review in May of 2006. (See the sidebar in the IC-7000 review, on pg 71, for details covering this change.) Phase noise results from reviews prior to May 2006 were off by 7.5 dB (too optimistic). When comparing new phase noise results to the old ones, move upward on the chart 7.5 dB from the old number. (i.e. For an old phase noise number of -110 dB, the corrected value is 110-7.5 = -102.5 dB.) The new phase noise plots are easy to spot as they extend to 1 MHz, versus the 22 kHz limit of the old ones. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and phase noise
Hi Bill, The reference on-channel signal for past ARRL BDR testing has typically been set between -110 and -80 dBm, well above the MDS. te interfering signal generator is increased until this signal drops by a dB due to compression. This on frequency signal dominates the in-band RMS audio voltage. The noise floor needs to raise a lot before it dominates that signal. Also, even on the Orion, their BDR is well above their phase noise at any spacing. For the Orion II, the ARRL numbers are: 2kHz 20kHz Phase Noise-129 -125 BDR 136 136 Neither of their BDRs were noise limited. For the particular K3 I tested the phase noise on below, I measured a typical BDR of 140-141dB at spacings 5 kHz and wider and about 138dB at 2 kHz. On another note, as I mentioned in my email, the ARRL has refined a number of their test methods. They are now making the dynamic range measurements by measuring the on frequency IMD spur or blocked signal using a narrow band spectrum analyzer. This separates the blocking or IMD measurement from reciprocal mixing, which they will do as an additional test. See page 71 of the May 2006 QST for details. 73, Eric WA6HHQ - Bill Tippett wrote: WA6HHQ: Rig 1kHz2 10 20 50 100 1M K3 -110 -119 -136 -140 -143 -144 -150 I'm now wondering how you measured 143 dB BDR at 2 kHz in the presence of 119 dB Phase Noise? [Elecraft] K3 and phase noise
WA6HHQ: They are now making the dynamic range measurements by measuring the on frequency IMD spur or blocked signal using a narrow band spectrum analyzer. This separates the blocking or IMD measurement from reciprocal mixing, which they will do as an additional test. I suppose this means no ARRL measurements will ever again say noise limited, but I question how practical this is in the real world. In the latter, we want to know when any spurious signal will cover a weak signal at the noise floor...whether it's IMD, BDR or phase noise. I like the term G3SJX uses (he does RSGB's Radcom product reviews)...Spurious Free Dynamic Range (SFDR)...which encompasses all potential sources of spurious effects. I will note that the K3 may still have better overall phase noise than the other rigs listed if you integrate it over the potential bandwidth of phase noise interference. In a typical contest situation, you may have strong signals +/-25 kHz of your RX frequency. In this case, phase noise from a station 25 kHz away can still cause problems. For example, comparing to Orion: Rig 1kHz2 10 20 50 100 1M K3 -110 -119 -136 -140 -143 -144 -150 ORION 2 -121 -129 -126 -125 -118 -128 -138 Delta-11 -10 +10 +15 +25 +26 +12 it is ~10 dB better at close spacings, but 10-25 dB worse at wider spacings (and over much greater BW than the K3). Assuming you had strong signals spaced every 1 kHz over +/-25 kHz (not unusual in a major CW contest), the K3's *integrated* phase noise effect could be less than Orion's. Also I'm sure the VHF guys will love the K3's numbers, since they are more interested in the wide-spaced phase noise effects. The other thing all of us need to remember about extremely close spaced measurements is that these are made with continuous carriers (i.e. no key clicks) from ultra-quiet sources (e.g. HP 8640Bs or quartz oscillators). In the real world, nearby signals will have much more noise from clicks and their own TX phase noise. This is why we are kidding ourselves if we think a 200-250 Hz roofing filter will actually help much more than a 500 Hz filter. Theoretically it might be better, but in the real world of key clicks and TX phase noise, that will far override any theoretical advantage of the narrower filter IMHO. Thanks for posting the data...maybe a little worse than I had hoped for at close spacings but as I think about it (e.g. above), it may actually yield a better overall result for integrated phase noise effects. 73, Bill W4ZV ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 and phase noise
And if you look at the actual phase noise plots the actual cross over point is right about 5 kHz. You are absolutely right about the importance of looking at the overall area 'under the curve' for phase noise as you move out across the band. The sum integrated total of the mixing of the phase noise with all off freq signals adds to the total noise floor in your RX on a busy band. This is especially important on bands like 40M at night on the east coast and Eu, where there are lots of -very- strong BC signals in addition to all the ham activity within 100 kHz to a MHz of your operating frequency. Add a busy contest and whammo! :-) 73, Eric WA6HHQ - Bill Tippett wrote: I wrote: Rig 1kHz2 10 20 50 100 1M K3 -110 -119 -136 -140 -143 -144 -150 ORION 2 -121 -129 -126 -125 -118 -128 -138 Delta-11 -10 +10 +15 +25 +26 +12 Make that +16 ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K3 - Sweet sidetone!
Here is what the sidetone really sounds like (using the handy TX TEST feature of the K3 that disables output, but lets you oterwise transmit): http://www.kkn.net/~tree/160/Sidetone.mp3 It does sound good -- and different. It almost sounds like there's some kind of phase difference between right and left ears when using headphones. Is the K3 doing any kind of stereo processing to the sidetone signal to make it sounds so good (or different)? I had to admit, I didn't even copy the call sign in the .mp3 sample because I was so distracted by the different sounding sidetone. Not sure if that's a good thing. I'm just curious... is it a deliberate design decision or just some side effect of converting it to the .mp3 file or what? .. ___ Elecraft mailing list Post to: Elecraft@mailman.qth.net You must be a subscriber to post to the list.
