Re: [LegacyUG] Location Mapping

2009-11-10 Thread Kay Fordham
I just checked Ancestry.com mapping on the 1930 census. The map appears with
the balloon; however, move it around a little and it disappears (the map,
that is). Appears Legacy is not the only one with the problem.

Wow! The plot thickens. Things have definitely changed at BING. Now I am
able to CRASH or LOCK-UP Legacy at will.

Would others please try the following to see if this happens to you. I
would
suggest opening a test file and not your real database or else make sure
you

have a current backup.

1. Using either the menu or the blue triangle for an information window,
get

to the Master Location List.
2. Click on the GEO-CODE box at the top and select "Geo-code all
un-resolved

locations through Virtual Earth" (message to programmers: please change
Virtual Earth to its current incarnation of BING.)
3. An error window will appear. You may click YES, NO, or QUIT.
4. It doesn't matter what you click because you'll be stuck in an endless
loop of getting another error, OUT OF STACK SPACE.

You might get lucky and get back to the first error window but you are
still

stuck. There is no way to close Legacy without closing the error window,
which refuses to do so.

You will have to terminate the LEGACY.EXE process using Windows Task
Manager

(CTRL-ALT-DEL) or just reboot.

Seems as if BING changed the calls or parameters that needed to be passed
to

its interface and Legacy is stuck sending data using the old method which
causes the lock-up or crash. Its not Legacy's fault because it used to
work

but as someone else already stated, "Microsoft moved the goalposts."

Kay,

The .trn file for French should use "calc.". That is what is in my
version 109 file. When I switched from English (Canada) to French the
FGS did use calc. in the report. Switching back to English changed the
wording to Cal which used by all the English versions.

Check the dates for the .trn files in your Legacy program folder. My
date modified for the .trn files are 21 Aug 2009 for the Swedish and
Spanish files and 13 Aug 2009 for all the other.trn files.

Kay,

The .trn files which are used for translating chart reports were fixed in
August so they are included in the newest version. What you may be seeing
however is a problem with the report.usr files. If you have the ber
problem after changing languages use the reset button on the report

I left the problem open so the programmers will address the problem of

I've noticed recently that a few users are using the option requesting a
Read Receipt for their messages. While not a big problem, but unnecessary
for a list such as this. Usually this is used solely for the purpose of
business emails and should be turned off.

I'm surprised nobody else has noticed or said anything unless it's because
I'm using a very old version of Microsoft Outlook.

Kay,

Problem confirmed. There is an error in the .trn files which control the
chart type reports wording. I have submitted a problem report on the issue.
You will only see the error if you change the report language. So long as
you were using the default language you used to install Legacy the term is
correct. Once you change language however the error in the .trn file changes
Legacy's term for Calculated from Cal to Ber in all the future chart style
reports you create.

When I use the calendar feature to calculate a date (in this case birth), it

Go to a person in your Legacy file, then click on the globe "Internet" on
the top menubar. Then click on "Search Internet for Current Person..."

It opens a pop-up window where you can replace one of the 8 websites to
choose from with Find A Grave. I used Alta Vista because I never use Alta
Vista. Click on the button, "Customize Searches..." and it opens another
pop-up window where you can Select one of the Internet Searches (I still
used Alta Vista as my choice). This opens up yet another pop-up window
called "Select an Internet Search." "[none]" will already be highlighted.
At this juncture, click the "Add..." button.

*Another* pop-up window will appear where you can name your new search (I
named it "Find A Grave") and then you can finally paste that long URL into
the first box. The second box already has []=[%20] in it so all I had to do
then was "Save" and it was done.

"Alta Vista" was replaced with "Find A Grave" on that first window, and it
works great. BTW, the Alta Vista search string is still there in Legacy,
apparently Legacy can only display 8 other websites at a time, to search
from, in that very first pop-up window.

Sorry if this is too simplistic, I'm kind of a detail nut...

Netty,

I am sorry that I cannot respond in the Dutch language. It appears that you
are saying that you can sort children after the fact but you want to know if
Legacy will automatically sort children like the Dutch program Aldfaer. No,
it will not. If children are entered in random order you must use the sort
command to arrange them in birth order. Perhaps someone on the list has
command of your language and can answer more efficiently.

[LegacyUG] Calculated Date Terminology Error - Still Exists

2009-07-28 Thread Kay Fordham

Using 7.0.0.97, 10 July 2009

In April I reported an anomaly regarding using the calendar feature to
calculate a date. It shows properly as "cal 3 April 1849" in the Family
View; however, it shows "ber 3 April 1849" in the print preview and printed
copy.

Brian confirmed the problem and submitted a problem report on the issue. His
explanation was "You will only see the error if you change the report
language. So long as you were using the default language you used to install
Legacy the term is correct. Once you change language, however, the error in
the .trn file changes Legacy's term for Calculated from Cal to Ber in all
the future chart styles you create.

This bug was obviously not fixed in the last build. It is necessary for me
to frequently create Family Group Sheets in German and French. Once this is
done I then get ber rather than cal when switching back to the English
language. This is a major problem for me. Any idea when this bug will be
fixed?

Re: [LegacyUG] Draft cards explanation please

2009-06-02 Thread Kay Fordham

Helen,

Here is a description for the WW I Draft Registration from Ancestry.com:

"In 1917 and 1918, the United States held three registrations for the WWI
draft. In the end, more than 24 million men born between 1873 and 1900 -
some 25 percent of the U.S. population - registered for the draft, although
not all were drafted. Handwritten by each individual, draft registration
cards include the individual's name, address, date and place of birth,
occupation, signature and more."

As it states, not all who registered were drafted. These records have been
an invaluable source for me in providing previously unknown birth dates.
One series of the cards also asked for place of birth. They give occupation,
employer, and location of employer. They provide next of kin, and sometimes
this has produced a previously unknown spouse. Their address is proof of
where they were living at the time. And finally, the physical description.
Since these records were handwritten by the individual registering I have
been able to correct family records regarding birth dates and places.

Hope this helps.

I've downloaded draft cards from Ancestry because (1) they are an
additional piece of
information about an ancestor and (2) they add to the
background/personality of someone
who could otherwise be just BMD dates and have added them to the
collection of images for

that person but ignored them otherwise.

There are perhaps about 3-4 people in my 5000 plus database with these
draft cards and now
that I see the topic discussed, what is the point, purpose, meaning, etc.
of these draft

I think that it involved compulsory? military service but when, why and
how was the draft

Kay,

Problem confirmed. There is an error in the .trn files which control the
chart type reports wording. I have submitted a problem report on the
issue. You will only see the error if you change the report language. So
long as you were using the default language you used to install Legacy the
term is correct. Once you change language however the error in the .trn
file changes Legacy's term for Calculated from Cal to Ber in all the
future chart style reports you create.

John and Ron -

When I first noticed the "ber" error I checked my language settings. The
program option is set for English (US) and the report option is the same. I
switched to each of the other two English settings but had the same results.
If John has experienced this anomaly in any instance it would seem to me to
be a bug of some kind.

Ron,
It appears you are right IF you have set the program language option to
English (UK), i.e., "English English." However, try changing the language
setting on the report screen to English (US). For me at least, this then
causes "cal" to be displayed as "Ber." In other words, if the program
option is set to one version of English, but the language option for a
report is set for a different version, the "Ber" anomaly seems to appear.
The same thing seems to happen with "abt" and "cir" for approximate dates.
I guess this doesn't apply to Book Reports as I don't see anyplace to
change the language settings for them.

[LegacyUG] Question on Geo-Code

2009-04-14 Thread Kay Fordham

Using Legacy 7.0.0.90, Windows XP

Per Sherry's advice (when I was having mapping issues) I used the geo-code
all unresolved locations. This resolved the problem existing at that time.
Now, in looking at my master location list I'm finding that perhaps 7 out of
10 locations are incorrect, even though all of the towns in my location list
appear on the Google maps.. For instance, the balloon for Charlton,
Massachusetts is NE of Marlborough -- a long ways from Charlton. Cedar Falls
Iowa shows up on the town of Sinclair, Des Moines, Iowa shows up a long way
from Des Moines, and on and on. I have been correcting this by
right-clicking on the correct location and resetting to it.

1. Should I be arbitrarily resetting in this fashion?
2. Or should I be looking the location up on, say, USGS Earth Explorer,
and manually changing the lat/long information?

No. 1 will take a long time since there are hundreds of locations in my
list. No. 2 would take a very long time. Is there something I should be
doing in the process to eliminate all of the make-work?

Thanks,
Kay Fordham (sunny Temecula, CA)

Re: [LegacyUG] Fw: Problem with Mapping - Follow-up

2009-03-31 Thread Kay Fordham

Folks -

My issue is not about which part of the balloon points where. I am very
familiar with Microsoft VirtualEarth and use it regularly.. I am well aware
of how to resolve the coordinates. The problem is that while using the Map
my Family feature, many of the locations listed in the box on the left-hand
side of the screen had the balloons placed hundreds of miles from the actual
location. This occurred with some families and not with others. The fact
that hundreds of locations were affected told me something was amiss. Jack
Earnshaw's response (see below) caused me to take another look at some of
the families - and he hit the nail on the head regarding unresolved
locations. All it takes is one location with a ? and some of the other
locations are adversely affected. For example I am now looking at a family
with 16 locations in the left-hand box. The top location has a ? in the Lat
column. When I highlight Milwaukee, Wisconsin in the box the active balloon
is on Hot Springs, South Dakota. Mousing over the balloon brings up the
Milwaukee location with residence date. The active balloon for Hot Springs,
SD, is in New York. The active balloon for Brooklyn, Windham County,
Connecticut is in the middle of South Dakota. Again mousing over it brings
up Brooklyn and a 1847 marriage. I don't believe this is a Microsoft
problem since the balloons are all placed properly at locations listed in
the left-hand box. It would appear that Legacy is assigning the family
events to the wrong places when Microsoft is unable to verify one or more of
the locations. I now know how to rectify this situation.

Thanks, Jack, for helping me resolve the issue. And, thanks to the others
who have responded.

Kay

"I reported this as a bug some time ago but got back the "unable to
reproduce

the problem" answer.

What I was finding was that choosing an individual and then clicking the
Mapping button brought up the correct list of locations and then it tried to
resolve on the map all those places that hadn't yet been resolved. This is
where it went wrong. The places it picked all were within the list of
locations on the left, BUT the coordinates and balloon were allocated to the
wrong place. E.g. if there were 4 locations A, B, C and D and that B, C and
D had not been "resolved" before i.e. placed on the map then it seemed to
place location B at the point on the map for location C, similarly for
location C it might go to the place on the map for location D. This didn't
always happen, but very frequently. Now I try to ensure that the places have
been resolved properly before I go to mapping. But I will always go down the
list to make sure that the locations are shown at the correct place on the
map. Going to the location list and getting places resolved that way seems
to be OK, it is only when this occurs "on the fly" by using the Mapping
button"

In my opinion this is a very major bug, but they think else.

Er no, Bert! That's a Microsoft VirtualEarth bug! All the API allows the
programmers to do is say they want a balloon at a specific point on the
map. VitualEarth actually displays the balloon in what it thinks is the
correct position on the map.

The points are based on latitude and longitude co-ordinates in the Legacy

[LegacyUG] Fw: Problem with Mapping - Follow-up Again

2009-03-30 Thread Kay Fordham
While mapping my family in South Dakota, there is a push pin over somewhere
they never resided (even with the zoom feature). Mousing over it shows
Scituate, Massachusetts - Estate: Ida Mary Spencer 1927. Ida Mary never had
an estate in Massachusetts and never lived there. This estate belongs to
her father's half-sister Clara Simmons. Going off line now. Hopefully
someone can come up with an idea as to what is wrong - other than a wonky
database.

Re: [LegacyUG] Problem with Mapping

2009-03-30 Thread Kay Fordham

Ron,

I just tried the Map my Family from family view. Things are even worse.
Mousing over the balloons shows that the one in

Massachusetts shows Fall River, South Dakota. The one in Fall River shows
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the one in St. Paul, Minnesota shows St. Charles,
Illinois. I have done check and repair. All of these are modern locations
and all show up in the U.S. Geological Survey Maps. I have already sent a
message to the list about the latest anomaly.

Thanks for your feedback.

Kay,

Apart from saying that the lower the zoom the more inaccurate the the
position of the pin looks, I am not going to go into this aspect further at
the moment. The first thing is for you to be able to use it.

If you start with an individual in, say Family View, and click the Mapping
Icon then the program will automatically try to put the pins into the
locations associated with this person. This can be quite inaccurate and it
should be noted that it only reconises modern locations,

The next thing to note is that one cannot move the pins and it is necessary
to move the map, and then put your curser in the correct place and right
click. But this cannot be done in the screen displayed when you click the
mapping icon; you need to click "Resolve". This takes you to the same screen
as View>Master Lists>Location and here you can move the map and set the
location as described above. Using the zoom in and zoom out helps to
manipulate the maps. The help Files give details of the meaning of the
lettering of the column headers.

Re: [LegacyUG] Double Dates

2009-03-26 Thread Kay Fordham

Rich,

My French records are only for certain lines. They come from Catholic
parish registers and civil registers, neither of which used double dating.
My early German parish registers (protestant) did not use double dating
either. I do need double dating for my early New Englanders and may likely
need the feature for other lines in the future. Guess I'll have to accept
the doubles when not needed as you stated below. This issue would likely
cause problems for many users but I saw only a couple of posts in the
archives.

Thanks for your feedback.

Will you have 100% French dates, or will there be British and/or
Protestant European also. Only if you have 100% will it matter. I have
found that to include the Scandinavian alphabet characters with them in
correct order, I changed the underlying language to Swedish, though I
never print in that language. This seems to have brought in other changes,
which I accepted. You might consider switching to a 'Catholic' language
which would never need the double dating. But I have both so must accept
the doubles when not needed.

I am inputting many early French records from 1600s through
1800s. They did not use double dating. If I turn the
option off, all records are changed, including those which
require double dating. Is there a way to manually turn off
the option for selected records?

[LegacyUG] Problem with IGI Search

2009-02-23 Thread Kay Fordham

To recap:

As of Yesterday:

The FamilySearch Account Screen did not appear automatically.

Clicking Options resulted only in a pop-up box with the option of ticking or
unticking "assign sources when saving changes." No access to the account
screen. I don't need to set up an account, but the system appears not to be
working on my machine.

My first search had matches but the "view matches" box was grayed out.

Other searches worked just fine.

As of Today:

Clicking the Search IGI link freezes the program and it is necessary to shut
it down. All other searches and functions work properly. I've done all the
maintenance.

Any suggestions?

Thanks to all that responded to my post yesterday..

[LegacyUG] Re: Help Please on Source Template Overrides

Jenny

I should have put the issue aside when tired and frustrated. I had problems
with the overrides one time and not the next, and was not able to
efficiently analyze what was going wrong. Will have a go at it today with a
clear mind. Thanks for your helpful feedback and hope you feel better soon.

Jenny Wrote:

My brain's a bit fuzzy at the moment (combination of heavy cold and cold

Working in the Source Detail screen, if you enter the Details on the first
tab, then click the Override tab there will be nothing entered in the boxes,
but if you click on "click here to go to the overrides tab" the boxes will
have the citations entered ready for you to edit.
If you copy a Source which has overrides to the Source Clipboard, then paste
it, it will paste with the overrides included and the checkbox ticked for
using that override. If you make changes to the Source Detail and then want
to incorporate these into an Override, you need to make your Detail changes,
then click "the output has been overridden by the user. Click here ..." and
then re-write your override sentence, not just change the bits you have
changed on the details screen.

I hope that makes sense!

Re: [LegacyUG] Help Please on Source Template Overrides

2008-12-02 Thread Kay Fordham
I'm seeing another problem that may have compounded my confusion previously.
I just copied the below-mentioned source to the clipboard, then applied it
to another individual. The detail screen then popped up and I changed the
information as appropriate for the new individual and saved it. The Output
Preview still shows the details for the original Detail Screen - not the
change made.

Is anyone else having this problem? Doesn't seem feasible that I would need
to do an override on the detail screen rather than just change data and save
it. Or is this the way it works?

Yes - however, if I went back in to make another change I may have started

have been the problem. I was getting some squirrelly results at times.

[LegacyUG] Help Please on Source Template Overrides

2008-12-02 Thread Kay Fordham

Using 7.0.0.76

I've spent another half day trying to figure out the override protocol.
Never had a problem with Legacy 6. Can someone please give me a heads up on
what I am doing wrong?

I'm using Newspapers - online - by unrelated content provider.

I create the master source and save.

I need to insert volume # and issue # in addition to the page #. I need the
information in this order (largest to smallest). I input (in page block)
vol. 1, issue 10, p. 3 and save.

The Output Preview shows: p. vol. 2, issue 10, p. 3.

I hit the override button and prefill the Footnote/Endnote block. I delete
the "p." before vol. 2, issue 10, p.3 and save.

The Output Preview still shows p. vol. 2, issue 10, p.3.

Yes, I can resolve the problem by entering the page number first and then
volume and issue, but this is not the way it should be. I've not been
successful in performing overrides for other sources either. I'm following
what little information is contained in the Manual and Help File, unless I'm
misinterpreting something..

Thank you!

[LegacyUG] Problem with Source Overrides

2008-12-01 Thread Kay Fordham

Using Version 7.0.0.76

I think I need a brain transplant. I just can't capture the sequence of the
source overrides. Example: I used the books, author known, basic format.
I fill out the master source template and then modify the contents using the
override and save. It is easier to do this and modify rather than enter all
from scratch. I don't continue to the detail at this point because there
are multiple people listed in this book and each is done on an individual
basis. When I use "cite a master source" and fill in the detail and save,
the detail information does not show in the output preview or anywhere else.

Can some kind soul explain the step-by-step instructions for overriding?

Thanks,
Kay Fordham

Ron -

Congratulations - you just resolved my problem. Looked at source settings
and found the "If an event has multiple citations, combine them into one
paragraph" was checked (must be the default setting). Undid that and no
more problem (at least it is a problem to me). BTW it was printing
previously the way I described in all reports.

[LegacyUG] Problem with Source Printout

2008-11-30 Thread Kay Fordham

Using the most current release downloaded today.

I have two sources for an individual as follows (footnote/endnote citation
copied here only). Number 1 was done with the Private Artifact Template.
Number 2 was done with the Newspaper, online, by publisher Template.

1. Lee Dean Alden, Memorial Card, 27 November 2007; privately held by Kay
Fordham [ADDRESS FOR PRIVATE USE], Temecula, California.2008. Received from
Mary Alden Hagen of Madison, South Dakota.

2. Lee Dean Alden obituary," The Lemmon Leader, 2 December 2007, online
archives; also published 27 November 2007 in the Belle Fourche (South
Dakota) Post & Bee

The Number 1 Source Citation printout is garbled as follows: [it combines
both sources]

1. Lee Dean Alden, Memorial Card, 27 November 2007; privately held by Kay
Fordham, [ADDRESS FOR PRIVATE USE], Temecula, California, 2008. Received
from Mary Alden Hagen of Madison, South Dakota . . . . "Lee Dean Alden
obituary," The Lemmon Leader, 2 December 2007, online archives; also
published 27 November 2007 in the Belle Fourche (South Dakota) Post & Bee

The Number 2 Source Citation prints as it should in the Source Citation
section of the Family Group Sheet; however, it is only included with the
obituary event even though it is also attached to birth, death, burial,
marriage.

The last statement in Number 1 (Received from Mary Alden Hagen of Madison,
South Dakota) was added as a master source comment. Deleting it makes no
difference. The last statement in Number 2 (also published 27 November 2007
in the Belle Fourche (South Dakota) Post & Bee" was added as a Detail
Comment..

Both sources show correctly in the Output section of the assigned sources
page.

Have done check & repair, exited Legacy and reentered - nothing changes.

Has anyone had this problem?

Thanks,
Kay Fordham

Re: [LegacyUG] Source Template for Book Question

2008-11-26 Thread Kay Fordham

Ron,

I generally work from family group sheets when doing research. When other
researchers request information it is the family group sheet that I provide.
Hence, I like to see the citation show where I located the material.
However, thanks for letting me know about the Ancestor Report Footnotes. I
will eventually be printing these reports.

Kay,

Repositories do print in Sources, at least in the Ancestor Report footnotes.
They need to be set in Options>Customise>Sources.

I have been using the "Book> Editor known> Basic Format" convention you
mention below for lack of anything better. Since the repository won't
print

in the citation (as least I don't believe it will) I like your idea of the
mention in the Comments (ticked to print in the citation).

I ran into this same problem, and decided the best choice was to
consider such books as "Book> Editor known> Basic Format" and
provide Google Books as the repository (if you don't use the
repository feature, then mention in the Text/Comments where you found
it.) The rationale being that you're looking at an exact digital
image of the original book (including all the relevant publication
information) it's not any different than having a hard copy of that
edition in your own hands and looking at it.

To me, the "online publication only" book category is worthless --
it's not clear what would differentiate a "web book" from a "website"
or other more specific web-based category, especially since it runs
into all the usual problems like getting updated, revised, taken
offline, etc.

Cheers,
Steve

Kay and Elizabeth:

This is really a semantics thing. The philosophy is that (1) Things on
the

Internet are considered published and (2) *Repositories* are not properly
cited for published materials because they are usually widely available.
That's why Legacy doesn't print a repository if you identify a book as
published.

On the other hand you *do* want to identify where you found the data and
the

format it was in. So the simple solution is to use the template Book >
Authored > Author Known > Basic Format, and then to put in the Detail
Comments section the medium, site name, and URL. This produces a properly
formatted footnote/endnote citation, subsequent citation, and
bibliography.

Much citation protocol is really not dictated by Mills, but is simply
established publishing procedure.

I shouldn't post messages when tired. In looking at my last message
yesterday I realize my source was constructed somewhat differently than
yours as listed below. We both used the same template; however, in the
Credit Line I entered the source listed by Ancestry.com: citing Nevada
State Heath Division and so on. Think it is important to know at a glance
where their information was gathered so we can more adequately judge
credibility. I want to use the marriage book information such as you added
but need to put it somewhere -- perhaps after the entry for Joe Blow and
Jane Doe -- but don't want to use the word "citing" again. Will play around
with it some more.

Thanks for your input

wonder if this is just a bug in the template or if there is some reason
Website creator does not show up in a footnote. I may have to check out my

Richard:

I have to disagree somewhat. The Nevada Marriage Index at Ancestry.com is
strictly an index and does not contain images. Therefore, it is not
*exactly* like the US census records. When you cite digital images, it is
different than citing an index or transcription. But I do cite Ancestry.com
in both citations so that I know where to go back to find the digital image
or index entry.
And I would also say that Ancestry.com is the originator of that particular
database, though Nevada is the originator of the information that is part of
the database. Ancestry formatted that information to suit its customers'

needs and physically created the database, so I think it would be
incorrect to give Nevada credit for the database.

All:

I don't understand how any can say that they've seen the original State of
Nevada index at Ancestry.com. As the OP said, Ancestry took two indexes and
created one database with both of them. Also, the entries I've researched in
that particular index at Ancestry.com do not have images of the original two
indexes. It is strictly a transcription. Are there other entries that have
images of the index? In that case, then you would be citing a digital image
of an index and you could put the State of Nevada or Clark County as the
author of the index. It would look something like this:

Clark County, Nevada, Marriage Index Book 210: 25, Smith-Jones; Marriage
Bureau, Las Vegas; digital image, "Nevada Marriage Index, 1956-2005,"
Ancestry.com (http://www.ancestry.com : accessed 1 Aug 2008).

you would do something more like this:

Jennifer -

Thanks for including the two examples below. My initial question involved
citing the source of the source as indicated in your example of an
index/database with no images. I found inconsistencies in "Evidence
Explained" where the source of the source was cited in one such case and not
in another, and so I requested confirmation to ensure I understood the
methodology. One needs to know where Ancestry got the data -- from state
records or who knows where. This is how one decides credibility.

Tried the new Source Writer for the first time today and love it. I have a
question about it relating to E. Shown-Mills, "Evidence Explained." I'm
citing an Ancestry.com database entitled "Nevada Marriage Index, 1956-2005."
Ancestry.com, in their Source Information, cites (1) their database
Ancestry.com Nevada Marriage Index, 1956-2005 . . . .; (2) Nevada State
Health Division, Office of Vital Records, Nevada Marriage Index, 1966-2005 .

Obviously Ancestry.com is the originator of this database. I like to know

Thanks for any suggestions.

[LegacyUG] Switch Gender

2008-05-26 Thread Kay Fordham

Using Legacy 6.0.0.117

Something has run amok in my database. I opened it a couple of days ago to
print a couple of items and then exited. All was okay. Today my mother is
listed as a male. When I go from me to my parents my mother is shown on the
right-hand side as wife; however, her gender is now male. When I go from my
mother to her parents she is shown in blue (male) on their children listing.
Clicking on mother brings her up on the left side of the screen as a male
with no spouses and no children. She has two marriages other than my father
and this info is still in the database but not visible by clicking in the
margin to rotate through marriages. The "last modified" screen shows no
changes have been made to my mother's data since 2007! I have a report
printed two days ago showing all was fine then.

Ran a check and repair. Results were that my mother's gender is incorrect
and I need to fix it. How? The Help files address only swapping husband
and wife. I've not been able to access the Legacy Mailing List Archives all
afternoon (page cannot be displayed message). How do I change the gender
when the choices are grayed out on the individual information screen?

Thanks,
Kay Fordham

Fw: [LegacyUG] 5 lines of text on family view....how?

2007-12-10 Thread Kay Fordham

Valerie -

All of the posts on this subject are "5 lines of text on FAMILY VIEW."

The help files I quoted below state ""There are up to five lines on both the
Husband and Wife box of the FAMILY VIEW" . Instructions have been provided
for addressing this issue in Family View. It appears from your post below
that you wish to have 5 lines of text in the INFORMATION SCREEN. I don't
believe this is possible. If it is, I'm sure someone on this list will make
it known.

I can customize the 5th field, (default death cause) and select age at
death
which is blank for living persons. Is that what you mean? I cannot see

BTW Diana's original message was 5KB rich text format, a very brief
message
with a tiny font hard to read. Leon's reply included all of Diana's

but converted to plain text, (size only 4KB), which is easier to read,
takes
less archive storage and people in remote areas on dialup really
appreciate
reduced download time. I truly hope no-one takes offence to these

In family view, there are 5 custimizable fields to the left of the
data you have entered., e.g., Born
Bapt
Died
Bur
Age

The last field (Age) is one that I have customized.

If you "Right Click" on the 5th field (in the example above, the Age
field), then select customize you can then select any field you want
to be displayed and the associated text for the field description.

Kay,

Using the most recent build of Legacy 6.0.0.168, I just created a test
source and entered your example in the Source Detail exactly as you showed
in your example and the output does not include a period. The output is
exactly the way I inputted the data.

Same with entering that line in Publication Facts.

Without downloading updates, you have no way of knowing if a problem has
been fixed or not.

Thanks for using Legacy.

[LegacyUG] Old Issue with Unwanted Punctuation (Period)

2007-11-28 Thread Kay Fordham
I'm using Build 6.0.0.117 of December 2006 and do not plan to upgrade until
Version 7 is issued. I (and others) have reported a problem with an
inappropriate period (punctuation) now for several years. The last promise
we had for a fix was in December 2006. I've reviewed the revision histories
on the Legacy website and do not see this issue addressed. I would really
like to see it fixed by Version 7. I have many occasions where only a year
in parentheses is appropriate in either the master source publication facts
(where the date is entered here because it is not part of the title) or the
source detail. Below are some made-up and abbreviated examples. These
periods stand out like a sore thumb in report citations. Are any of you
still having the problems outlined below?

Thanks,
Kay Fordham

Source Detail Example:

Entry: Joe Blow death certificate #12345 (1939)

Results: Joe Blow death certificate #12345.(1939)

If you use [1939] you don't have the problem; however square brackets have a
different connotation. If you add any text before or after the date in
parentheses you don't have the problem.

--

Master Source Example:

Entry in Title: Joe Blow death certificate #12345

Entry in Publication Facts: 1939

Results: Joe Blow death certificate #12345.(1939)

If you add any text before or after the date in parentheses you don't get
the superfluous period.

Here is a link to the questionnaires and instructions for enumerators from

You will have to repeat the search to find the actual definition of a

the data included. Of course, this is not to say that all enumerators
followed instructions.

Richard:

My U.S. birth certificate states that I am illegitimate. My parents were
not married, and my mother was told she could not list my birth father even
though he admitted paternity (South Dakota). That was some time ago. I
have seen a great many birth certificates (California and Iowa) of more
recent origin where parents were not married -- there is no mention of
marital status. They simply show the birth mother and birth father and
other pertinent information. No status is assigned to the child. Perhaps
not all states in the U.S. have the same rules, however. The bottom line is
that I am legitimate whether or not my parents' liaison was :).

Well, not to put down Legacy's GEO, keep in mind there are two other sources
we can use. Unfortunately, we have to buy them. They are:

  U.S. Cities Galore
  http://www.uscitiesgalore.com/
  and
  The Handybook for Genealogists
  http://www.everton.com/shopper/productview.php?SKU=8021&Category=Books

I can look up locations in US Cities Galore by state and county, and get a
list of towns, or, I can look up by state and town, and get a list of counties.
I just love it. While I could do without it, I don't want to!

The Handybook stays on my desk! I use it all the time. It has the following
information.

1.. Legal records, where to send for them; recorders office, county clerk,
etc. You don't send to just the clerk of a given county/state for records; they
all have specific offices.
2.. Where to write for a Census
3.. Phone numbers
4.. When created from another county, or whether it was the Original
County
5.. Maps - Border Counties of other states
6.. Migration Trails
The bad thing about it is it is expensive!

I looked up Los Angeles, Calif in the Geo Location file
and it said "Los Angeles, Los Angeles, California, USA"
But, when I ran the US County verification program it
listed all the Los Angeles address with a message
"Never a county by the name of Los Angeles in the state

Since I lived in Torrance, California for 20 plus years and

I checked the AniMap program, and they show Los Angeles

Re: [LegacyUG] 93-page pension file - handle?

2007-09-10 Thread Kay Fordham

Janis,

I'll be interested to see what responses you receive on this query. I have
3 Civil War pension files on 8-1/2 x 14 paper. The Revolutionary War
pension file is on 11 X 17. I used the MRIN filing system in notebooks and
currently have a piece of paper in the appropriate sections stating where
the actual files are stored. At present they are lying flat in a file
drawer in legal sized manilla folders. This is not good usage of file
space but I don't know where else to put them.

Thanks for broaching this subject.
Kay

How do others on the list handle the filing of a 93 page complete pension
file? I am trying to put everything in notebooks, with sheet protectors.
This is obviously not going to fit that format. Although none of the
original sheets appear to have been legal size, the person at NARA who
copied the file for me put it on legal paper. I don't use legal-size folders
(petty prejudice on my part).

Surely no one would use 45 page protectors?

Thoughts welcomed, in spite of the fact that it is a lame question; I think
the only answer must be "file it in a legal size folder."

I should have noted that in addition to the faint box on Family View,
the living children's numbers are purple, and the dead children's
numbers are blue. But I can't find the settings anywhere. Maybe it is
a permanent feature?

Go to View - Master Lists - Source. On the right-hand side of the menu is
a statement "Show Only." If the person has ticked one of the items such
as "verified" then only that category will appear when you attempt to cite
a master source. Sometimes people tick those boxes inadvertently.

Hello Legacy Users-

If I wanted to find a book, or at least a listing, of extinct locations
where the Pony Express, early post offices, where horse and carriages
stopped off during a journey, where / how would I find such a book or
listing?

I have come on a few names; all ending with the word "Station," which
makes

me first suspect it is one of those I mentioned above. Anything that would
tell me the present location, or former location (and how to find it)
would
be appreciated. "Linas Station Cemetery" is one such location. Sounds
pretty

obscure to me.

Thank you everyone.

Re: [LegacyUG] 1/2 siblings

2007-01-09 Thread Kay Fordham

The following data is from the Legacy Program Help Files.

The Siblings List shows the current individual along with all their brothers
and sisters. You can set anyone in the list to be the current individual by
selecting the person. (To select a person, either highlight the name and
click Select or just double-click on the person's name.)

Showing Half Siblings

If you select the Show Half Brothers and Sisters box, all the children born
to either of the current individual's parents are shown. This includes
children born to the father with other wives and to the mother with other
husbands. Step children are not shown because they were not born to either
the father or the mother of the current individual.

The Sibling List is reached by clicking the Siblings icon at the bottom of
the Husb or Wife box on the Family View or by choosing Siblings List from
the View menu.

Does this help?

Re: [LegacyUG] HTML

Sandra -

In Outlook Express just setting the options to send in plain text only is
not sufficient. You need to address the issue of "replying in the same
format as the sender." This means if the sender transmits in HTML your
reply will also be in HTML. On the main tool bar go to Tools - Options -
Send - and untick "reply to messages in the same format in which they were
sent."

I accidentally sent a post to this list in HTML just recently too. Now
I've worked out what happened, I'll share the details in case it helps
someone else...

I switched to using Mozilla Thunderbird for my emails a month or so back.
One of the first settings I set up was to make all emails to Rootsweb and
Legacy in plain text. So far, so good - that worked a charm.

BUT, along the way, I got tired of the program asking me frequently if I
wanted to send in plain text or HTML for addresses where I hadn't set
their preference, so I went in and found the particular setting governing
this behaviour - under Tools / Options / Composition / General, then
click on the "Send Options" button, and in the first setting choose the
behaviour for "When sending messages in HTML format and one or more
recipients are not listed as being able to receive HTML" I chose "send
the message in both plain text and HTML".

Once I'd set that, things changed and I suddenly found that my next post
went to the LUG in HTML. Oops! Sorry! This setting over-rode the one
I'd made in the first instance, that stated "legacyusergroup.com" was
only to be sent plain text (which happens to be on the same screen as the
one I described above).

What I've done to remedy this is to go into my Address Book and set for
the LUG address that it is only to be sent plain text, and now I'm back
to not having to remember to set plain text for my posts, and I'm not
bugged by messages for recipients who aren't in my Address Book, or I
haven't said which form they're to get. Should have done that in the
first place, but didn't know what was to come. ;-)

If you're using Outlook Express, there is a setting there, in the Address
Book, if I remember correctly, where you can determine that all emails
sent to that particular address will be in plain text. I used to use
that before switching programs.

Hope this helps someone. :-)

Kind Regards,

Map My Family Tree is a product that we sell, along with other Progeny

Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] December 6 Build Question

Hi Kay, I think this enhancement was in response to one of my prior
requests. Before the enhancement, the user had to choose for the
whole source title line to italicized or else the whole line would not
be italicized. There were a few cases that called for part of the
source title to be in italics and part not to be in italics. For
example, when I wanted to note a "rev. ed." or a specific volume
number, I used the big "I" in the formatting tool box to italicize
just the book title and not the other part. This formatting was not
coming out in the gedcom file and therefore it was not showing up on
my web site. It did work in the event notes, but just not in source
titles.

Because I did not want to wait for this fix (I didn't know it would
come so soon), I just went into my files and added the and
formatting codes as needed which then held up in the gedcom transport.

This wasn't a big deal, but it's all part of helping sources to be
formatted in a way to be consistent with current bibliographic and
genealogy sourcing standards. I still hope there will be more
enhancements to come with sourcing!

[LegacyUG] 8MB Attachments

2006-12-03 Thread Kay Fordham
1. I did indeed receive the "much discussed" attachment. It was a Legacy
zip file of a database. I deleted it.

2. The sender stated he had sent the zip file to Henry Peterson.

3. While I cannot speak for the sender, it appears (from the #2 statement
above) that he did not intend to transmit the document to the entire Legacy
List.

4. I acknowledge that this may have caused problems for some individuals on
the list; however, let's stop beating a dead horse and move on to more
productive conversation.

I heard back from teh people I contacted at the NGS, TAG, and NEHGS, and
all said that as far as they know no such rules exist, and the editor of
National Genealogical Society Quarterly wanted my source of any information
that the rules we've been debating here exist.

He said that in reality, none of the genealogical software currently
available conforms to genealogical society standards, and one place they
particularly fall short is in allowing for family complexity, such as step
children, foster children, and adopted children.

He recommended Numbering Your Genealogy: Basic Systems, Complex Families,
and International Kin (Arlington, Va.,: National Genealogical Society,
1999), a publication that every serious genealogist should have. The
second chapter addresses step relationships, adoptions, and similar
complexities. It is based on a article that appeared in NGSQ about a
decade ago.

RE: [LegacyUG] Questions on Installation and Copying Files

2006-10-26 Thread Kay Fordham

Thanks to Ron, Jack & Cathy who responded to my query. To answer some of
your questions -

1. I did indeed rename my old drive - it is now F. I will do away with it
in the near future.

2. I did indeed copy some files from F to C into a folder named Old C.
3. The files copied over were mainly pictures, scans, and documents. These
have now been integrated into my New C. I also had backup copies on CD.
4. I am reinstalling program files onto my New C.
5. The only program copied was Legacy, and mainly for the data files.
6. I did try to run Legacy from the copied files and got
the Runtime Error 339 message.
7. However, running Legacy from the Old F drive results in the same error.
It worked fine the day before my hard drive acted up.
8. The Runtime Error 339 file mentioned is VSOCX6.OCX. The Legacy Technical
Support web site has recommended solutions for this item.

I have DSL and will go for download from the Legacy site. Hopefully, this
will correct the problem. If not I will resort to the recommendations on
the Legacy web site.

Incidentally, the hard drive on my husband's computer failed about an hour
after mine went wonky. My daughter's went south a couple of days later. Is
it a family curse? We have all been working a week or so getting back in
business. So folks -- back up everything you can before your hard drive
fails -- as it eventually will.

Again, thanks-
Kay Fordham

[LegacyUG] Questions on Installation and Copying Files

2006-10-25 Thread Kay Fordham

Using Legacy 6.0.0.79 (20 January 2006) - Updating this week

Background

1. Hard drive wouldn't boot - had corrupt file which could not be repaired.
2. Installed new hard drive and reinstalled Windows XP.
3. Made new hard drive Master and old drive Slave.
4. Copied files from old hard drive to new drive in folder called "Old C
Drive" (including Legacy). Will integrate necessary stuff later.
5. Attempted to start Legacy but get Runtime Error 339 (DLL or OCX file
changed, missing, etc.). Obviously a shared file is now missing.
6. Legacy web page instructions are to first uninstall Legacy and then
reinstall.

Questions

1. Believe I will not bother with the program existing in the old C drive
folder. Would like to do a new install on my new C drive. I have the
Legacy 6.0 CD. Should I install from it and then download updates from the
website? OR should I download the whole program from the website?

2. I need to copy my data files over to the new drive as well. There are
many files in this folder other than my family databases; i.e, with
extensions of CB, FG, TC and so on. What are these and can I just leave them
behind? What besides the family files do I need to relocate?

3. Anything else I need to be mindful of? I do have backups on my hard
drive and on CD.

Thanks -
Kay Fordham

This is not accusing but just stating, this is how
many of the worms get into peoples PCs. Unaware people
recieve a worm, and next e-mail out carries itself to
everywhere. Worms cannot hide in plain text, but love
to hide in HTML. I have the softwear to stop them for
myself, but not everyone does. That is the main reason
for NO HTML, and secondary was for those people, and
there are many, who cannot get access, or afford DSL
style connections. There will come a time that these
folks may fall throuth the cracks, but having been one
until 6 months ago, I feel for them, and hope they can
catch up with us ASAP.

Re: [LegacyUG] Screen Shots

2006-10-14 Thread Kay Fordham
A couple of years ago I decided to develop a tool for uniform source entry.
The first method tried was screen shots of the sources that were to be "the
standard." The problem with them was that not all text showed on the screen
(without scrolling to the right) in some of the boxes; i.e., the Source List
Name and the Source Detail Information. Hence, the screen shots did not
capture all of the text. I then resorted to templates developed in MS
Word -- more work initially but they work well for me. There are examples
of each type of source - US Census, State Census, Canadian Census, Vital
Record, Vital Records from a Book, and so on.

Question: Do you have a method for capturing all of the text without making
more than one screen shot of a given source?

There are a number of screen capture utilities available - free and
shareware. Windows users though have a basic built-in screen capture
utility all ready to use with a couple of keystrokes.

To capture the full screen, just press the PRT SCR key (to the right
of the F12 key in the top row). This will copy the full desktop view
to the Windows clipboard. From there it can be pasted into any imaging
software (MS Paint for example). MS Word or any other application
which accept pasting.

To capture the uppermost screen you have open, press the ALT key along
with the PRT SCR key. Again, you can then paste it into an imaging
application. In there it can be edited or have text added to explain
what it is about.

Here is another free one: Mirek's Free Windows Software
http://www.mirekw.com/winfreeware/mwsnap.html

For anyone who dose a considerable amount of screen capturing, Snagit
is probably the ultimate tool in the shareware field:
SnagIt Screen Capture - Capture and Share Your PC Screen

If you would like an illustrated, printed guide, there is available
for download a .DOC file here:

[LegacyUG] Organizing your Research

Keith:

I struggled for years trying various filing systems which did not work for
me. I finally decided upon the system outlined by Geoff Rasmussen on the
Legacy Site and am in the process of setting it up. With over 1000 MRINs in
my database (and growing) the prenumbered sets on the market would be a
costly option. I am using plain old cardstock and Avery index tabs with
computer printable inserts. The tabs are labeled 16221 S-101 1" clear.
There are 25 self-adhesive tabs to a package. I ordered 25 packages and the
cost was $44.75 - this would make the unit price $1.79. I cut them and the
inserts in half (there are now 1250 labels) and hand number them. You can
also print them on the computer. I was only able to find this specific
label on the Office Depot website, but there may be other sources in your
area. My process is obviously more labor-intensive and the end-product not
as professional looking as it would be with the prenumbered dividers, but it
works for me.

Re: [LegacyUG] additional location data

2006-08-21 Thread Kay Fordham
I had ancestors in Iowa Township, Iowa County, as well as Iowa City next
door in Johnson County. There are Iowa Townships in at least 9 other
counties as well. Also, Iowans have a strange habit of using the township
name as residence (without the township designation), and seeing it in print
makes one believe it is the name of a town. For example, you may see
newspaper reports of so and so from Ilyria or Dover. These are township
names and the individuals named are rural residents. The marriage
certificate of one of my ancestors listed his residence as Myron. Took me a
while to discover that Myron was a township, not a town. The bottom line is
that one should be specific in detailing their locations to preclude
confusion.

Yer, there are too many examples of multiple layers
named the same thing. I have heard, there is a Iowa
Township, in Iowa County, in the state of Iowa. But,
Iowa City is in Johnson County?
In general, I use Township if rural, because that
'shrinks' the area discussed. If I have any other
small place, I use it instead. In my location's notes
I put explanations on this, and list the places
mentioned in the Twp., especially if I don't have GPS
yet.

I see many trees on Ancestry and it is quite

Re: [LegacyUG] additional location data

2006-08-20 Thread Kay Fordham

Diane,

I have numerous areas where a relative lived in a rural area in a township.
I always state it as you did below; i.e., Fairfield Township, Fayette
County, Iowa. By the way I was raised in Fayette County! Stating it in
this fashion leaves no doubt as to what specifically is meant. I was taught
(by an LDS mentor) to use ", Fayette County, Iowa" when the location within
the county is unknown (the space-comma delineates a missing entry.) Also ",
, New York" when only the state is known.

Kay,

I tested this and will submit a report to have the extra period problem
fixed.

Using Legacy 6.0 & 20 Jan 2006 Build

When I and a number of other users reported this problem several years
ago it was put on the "to be fixed list," but the anomaly is still in
existence. I searched the list archives but did not find anything on the
resolution of this issue.

Whenever I enter information in parentheses at the end of a source detail
statement Legacy inserts a period after the statement and before the
parentheses. For example I enter : Samuel Alden, register number 251
(1889). What I get in the source preview screen and in print is: Samuel
Alden, register number 251.(1889). I don't get the unwanted period if I
use brackets rather than parentheses; however, brackets have an entirely
different connotation in genealogy.

I have many sources similar to the above where there are no page numbers.
The data is set out by register numbers within a one-year period. I
prefer to have the year set off by parentheses for clarity and emphasis.
There are times when I wish to enter other data in parentheses at the end
of the statement as well.

Is there something I should be doing differently to eliminate the
superfluous period (other than a redo of hundreds of source detail
sentences)?

Thanks!
Kay Fordham
