2022-11-14 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Yes, you get clearance from the FAA, they route traffic around the area,
issue a NOTAM, and fine you if you stray from your assigned area. Amaeur
rockets were launched at the Ft Sill (SW OK) firing range once or twice a
year when I was a kid - don't know if they still do.

Re: [MBZ] Parts cleaner

2022-11-14 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I've been thinking of making one using an old stainless darkroom sink when
I get around to rebuilding an aircraft engine. A 5 gallon can of solvent
(mineral spirits, paint thinner, etc.) and pump and a filter of some kind
and some hose.
I was buying parts cleaner solvent in a 5 gallon can from Tractor Supply,
but I can't find it on their website now. I use it with a siphon sprayer
and air hose to wash down the Cessna engine and belly each year.

Re: [MBZ] Fwd: EV kisses.

2022-11-12 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I think the battery packs will limit the usability of old EVs. They are a
LOT more complex and expensive than you'd think.
This guy talks about the battery and charging it here:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDfV47il5mg
He swapped a Tesla powertrain and running gear into a 1950 Jag sedan.
There was a video of some guy flinging his used Tesla via trebuchet when he
found that a replacement battery was far more than his car was worth.

Yes, I noticed the lack of eye/skin protection when welding. I/m guessing
that during the first part, he was positioning the stick, closing his eyes,
stabbing it for the spot/tack weld, then looking to see what he had done.
I can't gas weld without filters either. I've seen other videos where
someone would TIG without hand/wrist protection, then in a different one, a
guy showed the burn resulting from not noticing that his sleeve pulled out
of the welding glove, exposing a band of skin.

[MBZ] OT - kitchen cooking things recommendations

2022-10-26 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Wife wants to re-do the kitchen. SHe currently has a 25+ year old dual oven
glass cooktop range and has decided that the bottom oven is too low to put
and remove heavy pots, etc.
She's thinking of a cabinet level built-in oven - still wants to have a
skinny one and a larger one, and a separate cooktop on the counter beside
it.
In this brave new world, convection ovens are a thing, and so are induction
cooktops.
Does Anyone have experience/recommendation for or against only of these

I wanted a basic work truck when we bought the F150 - had to special order
it. Only pimped out trucks on the lots.

Re: [MBZ] Taxes on online purchases

2022-10-23 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
You were always supposed to pay sales tax on on-line purchases, but it was
on the "honor" system. You declared it on the State Income tax form and
paid it there. Enough States got together and forced the issue of sellers
having to collect the tax. I don't remember whether congress got involved
or not, but they probably did.

I love the doors hinged like that. With that long a front end it needs at
least a V12, if not a straight eight! It would be a much more interesting

I suspect that the emissions are harder to limit when the engine is idling,

Desirable for what? For driving - either the very early 350/450 or the 560.
The early ones don't have ACC to fight with. The 560 is the most refined
and has enough power. The 380 felt sluggish to me - didn't like it.
I'd want a hard top - had enough of soft tops with the MGA and '58 Chevy to
last the rest of my life. THe pagoda hardtop is the best looking as well.
That's my NSHO.

I used to send the wife and kids to the central bathroom when the sirens
blew, then I'd go outside to watch. Never was one, though they did hit a
few miles from us several times. We can just barely hear the sirens from
the closest town now, and don't worry about it since the kids are all grown
and gone. After you hit geezer status, it just doesn't seem that big a
worry. Besides, the tornadoes seem to have moved north and east from us now.

In the one diff that I had to rebuild back when I was a paid wrench, the
noise was coming from the pinion gear - it was visibly worn. We replaced
the gears and bearings, after waiting months for the special order Volvo
parts, and sent it on its way, happy and quiet.

I'd vote for getting a used diff, inspect/repair it, then do the swap.

It will work either way - it doesn't care which end is connected to what.
I've heard them called a "toner" - puts a "tone" signal on the wire, and
has a receiver to hear where it goes. Since it goes into conduit (I
assume metal?), you'll need to go to all possible termination points to
listen for the tone.
One possibility that comes to mind is a big ventilation fan somewhere
(since I just installed a small one in the hangar).

Re: [MBZ] OT doctors

2022-08-09 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
Most likely a result of the insurance payment schemes. Each visit is
identified by a code - which dictates what insurance will pay. Two codes
for one visit wil be identified as fraud by the insurance co., making it
not feasible for the doctor to do that. You need an appointment for the
specific thing you want treated/looked at.

Bottom line, the for-profit healthcare model sucks big time.

Re: [MBZ] W108 heater blower motor - accessible through cowl vent channels?

2022-08-04 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
On the W115, I opened up the front center speaker hole to get the blower
motor out, I didn't cut the firewall. That was the second one. I followed
the manual to replace the first one - took over twice as long.

Re: [MBZ] fuel mileage

2022-08-03 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
That's how we measure aircraft costs - $/hr. Our Cessna burns 11.5
gal/hour at our normal cruise settings. I saw that non-ethanol 87 oct. gas
is 3.79/gal today at our usual station, so that works out to $43.59/hour
for fuel.
We haven't been flying it enough recently, and did some significant
avionics upgrades, so our total cost per hour - maintenance, repairs,
inspections, fuel and oil, etc. is right at $100/hour over the last five
years.
Now that fuel is below $4/gal, I need to go and fill the 55 gal drum - it's
empty now and the airplane is only half full.
We will fly it a couple of hours this weekend to calibrate a new Angle of
Attack sensor I installed a few weeks ago.

[MBZ] OT: Adhesvie recommendations needed

2022-07-21 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
I need to glue something like this:
https://www.lowes.com/pd/Tuftex-Multi-Wall-6mm-Panel-Clear-4-ft-x-8-ft-Corrugated-Polycarbonate-Plastic-Roof-Panel/1000689436

and this:

to the inside of the hangar door - corrugated steel on a steel frame.

It's too hot with some bare metal sections and the two large translucent
fiberglass panels for light when the afternoon sun is shining on it.
Most of the door has the foil backed foam, but the top ¼ doesn't.

What would you use to glue it up - liquid nails, or ???

2022-07-18 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
They should not be confused with a "sports car", they are "grand touring"
cars. I found the SLC to be very nice on the highway, and the same as most
other MBs in town. I'd say the SLC was the equal to the SDL on the highway.
I only wish it had the 560 engine and four speed tranny, oh, and the ACCIII
(and no sunroof).

The under hood cats were 1975 and 1976. A 1986 R107 would be a 560SL So
it's most likely a 1976. The manual AC makes it a euro - without the cats,
etc - more power than the US version - probably why the drive train is out
- it went to another car.
It's ripe for 5.0 dual overhead cam transplant

A 1977 or later exhaust manifold will bolt right up, then install the later
exhaust system and you are good to go. BTDT (almost, '75 block in a '78
SLC). Yes - the manual HVAC would be a really nice plus - worth changing
the exhaust manifold and system for IMHO.

It is really cool to see a Boeing or Airbus pass under you both out the
window and on ADS-B while flying through the departure path of an airport
(TUL in my case). Yes, I was under air traffic control - they told the
airliner to stay under 5000 ft till they were past me.

Re: [MBZ] A good deal?

2022-06-24 Thread OK Don via Mercedes
It has two engines that will cost around $40-50K each to overhaul, complex
landing gear system - a friend just spent over $1000 replacing the aged out
hoses in the retractable gear system of his Cessna 210.
Twins are considerably cheaper to buy than singles since most know how much
MORE expensive they are to maintain and operate.

Re: [MBZ] OT Extended Warranty success story

Most dealers don't cover the extended warranty themselves - it's basically
an insurance policy. The insurance company is spreading the risk among many
customers, most of whom will not use it.

I had to look it up:

"The John Deere 330 garden tractor used the Yanmar 3TN66UJ engine. It is a
0.7 L, 658 cm2, (40.2 cu·in) three-cylinder natural aspirated diesel engine
with 66.0 mm (2.6 in) of the cylinder bore and 67.0 mm (2.64 in) of the
piston stroke. This engine produced 16.2 PS (11.9 kW; 16.0 HP) at 3,635 rpm
of maximum output power.
The John Deere 330 is equipped with manual steering, mechanical drum
brakes, open operator station and 17.0 liters (4.5 US gal.; 3.7 Imp. gal)
fuel tank."
