Dovresti usare menudrake, che trovi in

altrimenti, col kde, puoi lanciarlo dando alt+F2

Comunque:

lopster, e i seguaci di napster
(immagino usino ora dei server open,
e' un po' che non li guardo)

limewire
c'e' anche per win e per mac, e' in java
(e vuole il jre aggiornato)

qtella e altri, basati su gnutella

Audiogalaxy (giusto in questi giorni

sapersi, sara' utile agli altri :)

Il fatto che sia hdb5 dopo la modifica e' corretto, dato che le
partizione primarie complessivamente possono essere fino a 4 e quindi
dalla quinta in poi sono necessariamente estese.

[newbie] Samba - Half there?

2002-05-27 Thread Anne Wilson

Running on Mdk 8.2, in a triple boot with W2K and Win98.

If I am to progress at all I must be able to work while the rest of the
family are on the LAN. That is, 1 W2K m/c and 2 Win98 m/cs. I need to
share a FAT32 directory, identified in Linux as /mnt/win_d2/Public, and
to make my m/c the gateway for ICS.

I requested Samba and ICS when installing, so I'm fairly sure all
necessary services will be installed.

I have created users on my Linux partition, giving them the same name
and password as they use on the Win m/cs. I have entered Samba
passwords. Then, using Micky's PC for testing, I checked to see what
was happening.

I can see Anne_linux in Network Neighbourhood. Clicking on it shows me
my 2 CUPS printer setups and a folder called Homes. Clicking on this
asks for a password - and I can go no further.

From my Linux screen I can see Micky/Public from Control Centre/Mount
Points.

1) What did I do wrong?

2) How should I have entered Micky into the Samba Users Config. file?
I just put 'Micky = Micky users', assuming that it had something to do
with the groups she belongs to. If it is, do I need to add all the groups?

3) If I try to see Micky/Public under Konq I get 'cannot connect to
host localhost'. When I get the other problems sorted out will this
disappear, or is it a totally separate problem?

matter. I've installed 7.2 dozens of times and 8.1 four or
five. The problem is the way Mandrake 8.1 tries to take over
the desktop. With 7.2, in Gnome, I could drag and drop icons
from the menus to the desktop, a very nice feature. With 8.1 I
can't. When it loads I can see the blue background screen, then
my wallpaper covers it, then another blue screen covers that,
then my wallpaper again covers the whole mess, this time with
the Mandrake icons rather than the ones I'm used to. And these
icons can't be changed, at least not by the methods I'm used to,
nor can I drag and drop from the menus. I'm assuming, perhaps
erroneously, that the difference between this and the previous
behavior is the Mandrake_Desk package, which didn't exist in
7.2. There are other aggravations, too, but I'll spare you.

Ummm, remember what happens in 7.2 if you open some GNOME
programs under KDE??? You watch GNOME icons invade your desktop!
In 8.0 that was resolved, (almost) but opening Nautilus and
calling for help from WM or KDE again caused the invasion (OK if
  you did not invoke help)

Hmmm. Your experience is vaster than mine (and I don't use KDE
that much). I wasn't aware of these interesting behaviors.

But you can run without Mandrake Desk if you want, and you can
use the local menu editors, too (just NEVER use the Mandrake
  one). The operative command is

  urpme mandrake_desk

It will likely take the Mandrake icons with it, but if it does
not, you can delete them and they won't come back.

I might try that, just out of curiosity. If necessary, how do I
restore it if I want to? I realize, of course, I could just delete
the relevant files in my home directory and start over. Also, why
do you say NEVER use the Mandrake menu editor? I *have* used it,
although I haven't always been happy with the results.

 Thanks,
 Dale
This may not be relevant but I will add my penny's worth of
experience with LM installs and desktops. I have had LM's 7.0, 7.2,
8.1, and now 8.2 in the last couple of years ,nothing with 7.0 and
7.2,but with LM 8.1 + 8.2 I have never experienced anything quite as
strange as previously described, but , I have to say that from time
to time , perhaps 1 in 15 boot ups to desktop you arrive to find your
customary tidy arrangement in Icons spread all over the desktop in
one enormous chaotic jumble. You have to start again, and reboot.
Sometimes you cannot move the icons back to order, every time you try
to do so the icon in question merely flies back to whereever it wants
to as soon as you let go of the hold . I then have to reboot , it
usually clears that problem , but the icons have learnt a new chaotic
jumble and then have to be reordered, and yet another reboot to fix
things in place again. I have never experienced unknown icons
appearing, though.

Re: [newbie] Samba - Half there?

2002-05-27 Thread Derek Jennings

It looks like you have missed out a few steps.
The simplest way to configure Samba is to use 'Webmin' If it not already
running install the webmin rpm and then in a browser url enter
https://localhost:1 (note https !!) accept the certificate you are
presented with and log on as username root.

In webmin select

ServersSambaWindows File sharingConvertUnix users to Samba users (at
bottom of page)
Select convert users then Edit users. Delete any user which got converted
you did not want, and for any user you do want edit them and select 'new
password' and give them the password Windows users must offer when trying to
access a share.

Go back to the page headed 'Samba Share Manager' if the shared folder you
created before is listed then edit it, if not create a new shared folder.
Select if the folder is browsable, and also set up any security you desire on
that folder. (Might be a good idea to start with little security until you
get it working)

BTW: The special share called 'homes' will make the home directory of any
user who logs into Samba shared.

Go back to Global Configuration 'Windows Networking options'
enter the correct windows workgroup name

Now go back to 'Samba share Manager' and restart samba (botton of page)
Your Samba shares should now be visible to windows machines, and the
passwords should be accepted.

To see the Windows computers in Linux I recommend komba2 It gives you a GUI
very like 'Network Neughbourhood' in Windows. Any folder you mount using
komba2 will appear in konqueror at ~/komba/

Re: [newbie] A Qestion of Memory

2002-05-27 Thread Randy Kramer

John,

You've done well so far, finding a bug that is apparently the same
problem you are having.

The next thing you must do is try to determine whether the 22 Apr 2002
report that the problem is fixed in CVS means that the fix:
   * should be in the version of KSpread that you have (meaning that the
bug really is not fixed, and you should update the bug to tell the
developer it is not fixed), or
   * should be in a version of KSpread that is already released but you
don't have yet (meaning you should think about upgrading), or
   * should be in the next version to be released (meaning you need to
wait for a new version to be released -- unless you want to try to
compile your own upgraded version which I do not recommend -- just
because I would find that painful to do).

I don't follow KSpread well enough to know which is the case, but based
on the 22 Apr 2002 fix date, I suspect we have to wait for the next
version of kde/kspread to be released.

If you do have to update the bug report, you can do so by emailing more
information to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] Include all the information that is relevant, save
a sample file that demonstrates the problem, and offer to send it the
developer on request (unless you have a web site or something similar
where you can make it available for download).

Select convert users then Edit users. Delete any user which got
converted
you did not want, and for any user you do want edit them and select 'new
password' and give them the password Windows users must offer when
trying to
  access a share.

Go back to the page headed 'Samba Share Manager' if the shared folder
you
created before is listed then edit it, if not create a new shared

Select if the folder is browsable, and also set up any security you

BTW: The special share called 'homes' will make the home directory of

Go back to Global Configuration 'Windows Networking options'

Now go back to 'Samba share Manager' and restart samba (botton of page)
Your Samba shares should now be visible to windows machines, and the

To see the Windows computers in Linux I recommend komba2 It gives you a

komba2 will appear in konqueror at ~/komba/

 3) If I try to see Micky/Public under Konq I get 'cannot connect to

Are you running a firewall on this system? If so, have you allowed
trusted access via the LAN? You are effectively generating a network
connection back to yourself doing this, so a firewall can get in the way
 in this circumstance (maybe).

[newbie] Backup to cd (was drakbackup)

2002-05-27 Thread Paul

In reply to shane's mail, d.d. Mon, 27 May 2002 08:32:55 -0700:

Hola. Is there anybody out there using drakbackup? I want to backup
to my standard SCSI CD writer (Matsushita 7502), but I don't know how to.
I only can backup to HD.

# backup DOWNLOAD dir
/usr/bin/mkisofs -graft-points -f -R -r -l -J download/=/big/download/ |
/usr/bin/cdrecord driveropts=burnfree -v -pad speed=8 dev=0,0,0 -
;;
*) echo Only options: paul or download
esac

#end of script

I call it cdbackup and run either cdbackup paul or cdbackup download

In the mkisofs part I point out the dirs I want to backup and the
directories on the CD that I want them in:
dir on cd/=/dir/on/disk
and I pipe the output to cdrecord.
You may need to change the device for the CD in your system. I use
rewritable CD's, that is why the blank cd part is in there also.

Paul

[newbie] OpenOffice Fonts

2002-05-27 Thread Chuck Stuettgen

I recently installed OpenOffice from the OpenOffice.Org site. Overall I find it is
very satifactory. However, one thing bugged me; the quality of the font display was
terrible. Having also installed the Windows verison of OpenOffice on my desktop at
work I knew the fonts could look better, so I decided to see what could be done to
fix them on Mandrake 8.1. As it turns out, the steps to fix the font display are
fairly simple if you have access to a windows installation. There are two parts to
process. Part one fixes the font display of the OpenOffice program itself. Part two
addresses the fonts udes in OpenOffice Documents.

Part One.

1. Copy all the truetype fonts from the Fonts folder in the Windows folder to
temporary folder on your Mandrake system. Only copy the files that have a ttf
extension. I used a Samba connection to my Windows desktop to copy to the files over
to my laptop. If you don't have network you could copy them to a floppy or burn them
to a CD.

2. Login as root and run DrakFont.

a. Click the ADD fonts button and locate the temporary folder you copied the TrueType
fonts to. You should see a list of all the fonts in the FILES window. If you don't
see the fonts check to make sure you have selected the correct directory.
b. Click the OK button and another window will pop-up listing the fonts.
c. Click the Install All button to install all the fonts.

3. Exit out of DrakFont.

Part Two.

1. While still logged in as root. Open a terminal session and change to the OpenOffice
installation folder. If you used the default location when you installed OpenOffice,
it should be in /opt/openoffice1.0.

2. Run spadmin by typing ./spadmin and a printer administration window should appear.
Don't forget to include the ./ in front of the file name.

3. Click the Fonts button then the ADD button.

4. In the Source directory box type in the path to same temporary directory where you
copied the TrueType fonts to. Or you can use the browse button to browse to the
directory.

5. Click the Select All button then the OK button to install the fonts.

6. When the process is complete you should see all the fonts in the window. Click the
Close button to exit the font display window then click the close button on the
Printer Administration window and you are done.

That's it.

are you doing it from windoze or linux?

if its windows using Easy CD creator or Nero, both should offer you the
option of making the CD's containing files from the iso or the actual ISO

With Nero (at least the version I have, which I don't know offhand and I'm
not booting into windows to find out), you first have to rename the file
image.iso to image.nrg. I have no idea why. But, once you've done that,
click File-Burn Image (this might be Create Image, or even just Image,
but it's something like that). Then it opens a find file dialog and you
just select your image.nrg. It then gives you some options that don't
mean anything to me, and I've always found that if I just leave them set
as they are, it works fine.

Since windows is optimised (if you can call anything with windows optimised)

[newbie] Digest version of Newbie available

2002-05-27 Thread Dwight Hines

I've just subscribed and will only be able to work on the linux on my
powerbook G3 firewire after hours and on weekends. I have not yet installed
or obtained the software. My plan is to read the digests for a while and
then when I have some time go for the installation.

First question: I have a 6 gig disk internal and it is already partitioned.
Can I just clean one of those partitions and install linux on it so it is
not necessary to blow away the whole disk and all my wonderful contents?

Thank you in advance,
dh

In general, Linux requires two partitions: one for / and one for swap.
I've heard that if you have enough RAM you can do without a swap, but I
don't know if that's true. Anyone ever done that? Further, most people
install with 3 or more partitions. Mine right now has /, swap, /usr and
/home all on their own partitions.

PartitionMagic 7.0 is a wonderful thing. You can add, delete and resize
partitions without losing data. It's incredibly slow and inefficient,
though, (mine took 8.5 hours to repartition a 40 gig drive that was about
75% full) so beware. But in the end, it worked and it worked flawlessly,
with no data loss or any problems.

   Sir Robin

With or without Mandrake, you can't up/download
moving pictures (vidéo) from/to a camcorder via USB.

  You must use Firewire/iLink/IEEE1394.

Not true. You can use a Firewire to USB adapter. Example URL:

With my present partition scheme, I could set up three partitions for linux

/, swap, and /usr require each?

I don't think speed is a concern, it could go overnight for me. But, in the
partitioning is there a difference in how the file structures are set up so
the actual separation into different disks is only a part of what needs to
be done?

[newbie] Evolution, home directories and double booting

2002-05-27 Thread Terry Smith

I'm running 8.2 and RH 7.3 on this box. Evolution is my email client of
choice. At the moment I have two home directories, one for Mandrake and
one for RedHat. I'm going to combine them into a single directory Real
Soon Now!

So in the interim a question for you Evolution experts. I'd like to
access my Evolution mail over on my RedHat home directory from my
Mandrake home directory (same uid on both) but it seems that Evolution
is looking only on the current home directory. Is there any way to point
the pgm to another directory (other than ~/evolution)?

Ok - weird. I decided, just going on a limb, to switch the disc from my
CD-RW to my DVD-ROM. Now I can read it just fine - with setup.sh and
all. However, the interesting part is that I don't see the files I see
when I read it with my CD-RW! Does anyone have any idea why the two are
reading the drives differently?

Thanks
Brian

installed Quake 3 and played it just fine. This time however, I type
sh setup.sh and I get the following:

setup.sh: setup.sh: No such file or directory

Well, obviously there is a setup.sh - I've run it twice to install Q3A
twice. But this time it doesn't find it. I open Konqueror to have a
look at the CD. Not there. All that IS there is a bunch of jpegs and
gifs of the characters and such. Nothing but image files.

My only thought on this is that, for some reason, I can't read the D
fully because I'm using ext3. Doesn't make sense to me, but I don't
know what else it could possibly be. Any ideas?

 Thanks!
 Brian

P.S. If you think it is because I'm using ext3 - any way I can change
to ext2 without reinstalling, etc - I heard that there was a way.
 Thanks.

Thanks, but that's not it - I tried all those different variations. I
sent an e-mail that apparently hasn't reached the listserv yet that I
was able to read it with my DVD drive. Strangely though - it turns out
that the only files I saw as being on the CD when I read it from my
CD-RW were the files located deep in the /mnt/cdrom2/Help/Manual/navart
directory. Even stranger is that not even all those files showed up
when I viewed the CD using my CD-RW. Very puzzling indeed.
Nonetheless, I got it to install. Unfortunately, I can't get it to run
now. I did everything exactly as I've done the last two times I
installed it - made a shell script to kill the arts server before
running quake3, etc etc etc - still it doesn't start up. It changes the
resolution to the installation default 640x480 and then and then says
received signal 11 - exiting. Now, The only time I got that signal 11
error was when I first tried to install and I ghad the sound server
problem - but that's fixed since I'm using a script which kills the
sound server first, so I don't know what's going on :-\

Anyone able to help?

Thanks
Brian

But shouldn't you enlighten us with the restore script as well please ;-)

That is So Easy!

cd /mnt/cdrom
ls
cp file(s) you want to restore where should it go

Hehehehe.
I just dump files to CD, nothing special with encryption, tar.gz files and
such.

I like it simple ;)
