You need to find a prop that is available in both directions
of rotation. If you can find a pusher prop of the same model,
it can be mounted backwards (to the direction of travel) and spun
in the proper direction for thrust.
These will only be available for gas engines since it is easy
to change the direction of rotation for electrics.

I haven't stocked HLG sized rubber for a couple of years because
nobody ordered it. When I had 3 50's left, I made an announcement
that I wasn't going to carry it and sold the 3, but since DLG there hasn't been
any demand and the newer HLG's are strong enough to launch on 2m
rubber. If a few people want  HLG rubber, I will make a special
order. The 2m rubber has about 6lbs pull at 300%, the HLG
rubber is about 3lbs.

If the HLG can take a hard hand launch, it should be able to take
a hard (relatively) catapult launch.
The answer may be to use a stronger rubber (like my 2m Comp. or 3m.)
in a short 10' catapult with an internal limiter.
I use spectra in my military bungees, but mono or braided
would probably be fine for HLG.
The catapult launch would make it necessary to install a second hook (tape on)
about 1" forward of a normal hook position. This keeps the nose down and
allows the plane to accelerate rather than climb like a kite.

The ultimate sin hat is the "Sun Tamer"
It is made from a vinyl siding type material, has an adjustable
internal basket so air circulates under it, it has a white
top and dark green bottom, so it reflects heat (and is insulated).
It has a strap and has been tested in very high winds and completely
sheds rain.

This is not really true, certain elements CAN be true, but it isn't
the prime reason that causes flying wings to misbehave on a highstart.
I have done a lot of experimenting with respect to winch and highstart
launching of wings and in my opinion, the main reason for difficulty
lies in the fact that there is no tail moment to dampen the sudden
high AOA rotation when you let go of the wing.
The fact that you aren't throwing it into the launch compounds this
condition, so you end up with a wing that is essentially in a flat spin
on a horizontal plane. The wing rotates so quickly that it is completely
stalled. The same thing happens to a lesser degree with scale ships
that have the hook on the bottom of the fuselage which can be
over 5" lower than the wing.
The fix for the scale ship is to throw it (if possible), mount hooks
up near the wings and use a bridal, or let it rise off the ground.
None of these are really possible with the wing, BUT there is one
thing I found that works well although I would be hesitant to do this
with a fragile plane like a Klingberg.
I put my thumb in the right stick well so it causes about 1/8"
of down elevon relative to it's normal trim.
This will vary depending on the plane and you could set
it up on a launch preset. When you let the plane go, it wont try to rotate
as quickly. You pull your thumb out just about as fast as you can think
about it. I would say no more than 1 second after releasing the wing.
This give it enough airspeed to actually achieve a laminar flow before
it rotates, then they tend to go up very well.
You can do a rise off the ground if you put a foam bumper on the end of the line
to prop the front of the wing up. If you don't do this, it will drag along the
ground for a long way. Don't ask me why I know about this..

I responded to someone about the Hobby Lobby connectors earlier
today, they are really a nice bit of CNC machining, but here is the
what I wrote earlier:

The best way to connect rubber is with a smooth shaft that is more than
3 times the diameter of the ID of the tubing.
(Think about a wrist rocket slingshot with the stretched rubber
aimed at your eye!)
The most important part of the connector is where the tubing constricts
over the end of the connector shaft. The end of the shaft needs to be
rounded so the tubing doesn't chafe itself at the end of the connector.
This is still the spot that eventually wears through.
I have gone a step further with the connector. I make them out of a
semi flexible plastic with a highly tapered end.
They aren't as high tech as the hobby lobby connectors,
but they are better. I have never had one fail, the tubing will
start to fail before the connector and you just cut the end off and
re-install the connector. They are also the lightest connector, so they
don't add any more mass to your launch. (not that this really matters)

I have also recently had new parachutes made to my specs.
They are heavy duty screaming orange rip stop with 3/8" black
nylon webbing risers sewn all the way over the crown.
They come with a # 10 SS split ring rated at 210lbs and a
black 225lb. snap swivel. The ring is only 5/8" dia., weighs about 2 grams
and releases easily from any tow hook I have seen.
The chute is 18" in diameter and does a better job of bringing
the line back.

He's right and I was told that they re-structured their oversized rate.
They use to charge for 30lbs. if your package was oversized, but it jumped
to 70lbs a few years ago. I was told by UPS that the majority of business
was 5lb. to 10lb. small packages from all of the E-commerce, so they
structured their rate to account for how many of those packages would
fit in the volume occupied by a single oversize package. They set it up
so they would make the same $$ for a comparable shipping volume.
FedEx bought out or contracted RPVI trucking for their ground division
and their rate is similar to the UPS rate of 5 years ago.
I have had good service from them.

How often do you have to do this?
I have shipped hundreds of packages including oversized ones and never had to deal
with this, so I can assume it doesn't happen to every shipment.
Paying an extra $40.00 per shipment just for protection is still not worth it in my
opinion. If packages were being routinely destroyed I would view it differently,
but you have to amortize that 3 hour negotiation into ALL of your shipping
experience.

The problem with this is that they charge 3 to 5  times more than it should cost to
ship.
 I was at one of these stores and shipped a 9lb. medium sized
package for about $12.00. (it would have cost about $7.50 for FedEx ground)
I had packed it myself and also had a significant discount for having an account
at the store.
A guy came in with a speedometer assembly for a classic car and let the store
do the packing and supply the materials. This object was about 5lbs and slightly
larger than a bread box. They charged him $28.00 to box and ship it from
Phx. to L.A. It was a standard 5 day shipment.

I am not willing to pay that much to send or receive a package.

Some people like to use the unlimited "mini-start" for this application,
but I recommend my standard 1/2" catapult bungee.
It's usable tension range is from about 15 to 40lbs. depending on
stretch and it will easily launch an open class glider to 100ft. plus
with no line. I always recommend at least 25ft. of line just to put
you out of the danger range if something lets go!
Some people like to use a tape on hook mounted a couple inches forward
of the standard hook so the launch becomes a catapult rather than
a kite- like histart launch.
This method is great for composite planes (glass/foam or molded), I would be reluctant
to try it on a built up like an Ava.
If you are flying a built up, stick with the normal hook position and use
20' to 50' of line depending on the desired launch height. It will still act
as a catapult and really accelerate the plane.
If you are flying any plane that can't take a full pedal winch launch,
stick to a ministart, the standard bungee will re-kit your plane.

I pushed for 1m when this first started. I think it would have developed
into a more serious class. When the Mosquito class started, we didn't
have as much cheap, small radio gear, now there is a huge amount of tiny
goodies waiting for tiny airplanes.
 When I designed my M-Hawk and Noseeum, there was
a fairly good following, but there weren't enough people in one place
at the same time, so events never materialized.
The real following came from "pocket flyers" who wanted a small
plane to fly anywhere, all the time. When I redesigned the Noseeum
to a DLG, the size didn't matter anymore because the launch
became rather extreme. I think the mosquito class would really
be a blast for small field events like hlg golf, steeple chase,
fly through the hula hoop, etc.
I have never seen enough of them in one place though.
I have used the Noseeum for hlg golf on a 9 hole course
against 60" planes and it was hard to keep up with a par
of 2 to 4 strokes per hole. Most of the 60" planes were
averaging 1 to 2 strokes. I would actually prefer the mosquitos
for golf, they are easier to maneuver through the trees.
I have scaled it up to 1m and it flys very well, but you need
a larger area to fly. I guess the real advantage the MHLG
is that you can fly anywhere. I like being able to fly in parking lots
or anywhere I can find a 60ft. clearing

powder for a very reasonable price if I can order
enough of it. I will probably need to get about 20 lbs.

It is very easy to cast with paraffin and is easily removable.
I would think that I could put a kit together with about 1/2
pound of tungsten and enough wax for under $10.00
If anyone is interested, let me know.
I already have about 4lbs. (2 small plastic vitamin bottles!)

I just finished updating some of my Hose Monster

I added some rubber specifications and will be adding
some pictures in the near future.
I have also added the option of ordering a high start
with bright yellow 100lb. Spectra line.
I recommended this for the 2m and 2m competition
high starts because the line weighs about 80% less than
the #18 braided seine. It is only about .018 diameter
and extremely abrasion resistant.
The weight of the line is an issue with the smaller planes
and smaller diameter rubber.
I am only offering it with complete highstarts because
I have to have something to wind it on to and I am
selling barely above wholesale, so I don't want to get
inundated with orders from all the kite flyers
The Spectra option will add $20 for 250ft. and $30 for 500ft.
I have also added 3/4" INSANE Mega Bungee for launching
huge scale ships on the slope. This is 1/4" IDx 1/4" wall thickness
and can generate over 50lbs of pull.

It is usually easy to differentiate at first glance.
It is obvious if a plane is built to be scale or for performance.
A combat foamy usually has very little resemblance to a scale plane
or a performance plane and a combat wing is what it is!
My foamy Corsair only has 2 small deviations from scale and they
are nearly impossible to see when it is in the air.
Of coarse it is possible to build one as a tape ball and thrash it,
but this would be evident too. It should be made clear to all that
the CD has the final say on what flys and if it looks like a tape ball
and flys like a tape ball, it will only be allowed in the air during
"after hours" events.
This is like the whole jet ski debate. Here in the San Juan Islands
they banned them completely. This is unfair punishment for those who have the
larger 2 or 3 seat personal watercraft and only use them as you would
use any boat, but it came about because of
HOW the craft was USED  by a bunch of yahoos that just wanted to tear
up a patch of water.
Don't throw out the baby with the bath water.
EPP makes a good rugged plane, it doesn't have to be a combat foamie.
I could get a beater composite scale plane, fly recklessly and do A LOT
more damage than even possible with an epp scale plane.
Just make it clear that the CD has the final word on
who and what flys and that reckless flying
won't be tolerated.

[RCSE] Laptops? need advice from the nerds.....

OK guys I need advice from the super geeks.(I know there are a few of you out there)
It is time for a new laptop (or a desktop AND a laptop) for Aerofoam.
I have been looking, but haven't made any firm choices.
It must have:
P4 at least 2.4ghz.
60 to 80gig HD.
Video inputs so I can use it in the field as a UAV monitor.
Good video performance for editing.
Good performance with flight simulators.
Good graphics processing.
onboard wireless would be nice.
Reasonable battery operation, 3 hours + would be good.
Nvidia video card with 64meg video ram for 3d CAD operations.

I am still hacking away on a 380mhz Compaq so I am seriously deprived,
if you can think of other useful features, let me know.
I was very impressed with the LCD screen on the new Fujitsu, it even looks
good from way off to the side, I would like to get that type of screen on
whatever I end up with. I won't even consider a pc with a celeron processor
and also won't buy a Compaq or HP.

[RCSE] NIB Aveox 36/15/4 for sale

I have a NIB Aveox 36/15/4 brushless motor with a 3.7 to 1 gear box
and a SH-18 programmable speed controller for sale.
The speed controller and gearbox have had 2- 10 minute flights on
one of my UAV's, the first motor was defective and burned to a crisp
while only drawing about 12 to 15 amps, so Aveox replaced it with
a new one. I am asking $400.00 for the package. Thats about $80.00
less than I paid 2 months ago.

I have to agree with Charlie, I have flown one of my 8ft. deltas to around
2500ft. I verified this by measuring the distance on the ground and
using the altitude gauge on my marine binoculars.
The delta has a LOT of surface area and shows up much better than
skinny wings. It is a small spot at 2500 ft. and I have 20/10 vision.
I have heard verified stories of scale ships being flown higher and
I can believe that, but I believe a 2m. would disappear at about 1500 to 2000ft.

A good rule of thumb is that the rubber should have a tension equal to
3 to 5 times the weight of the plane being launched.
The variable is the strength of the plane. A strong composite plane can
probably take up to 8 times it's weight in pull, but do you really want that?
My 2m comp. rubber would be about right for a semi fragile 3.6lb plane because
it has about 12lbs of pull at a medium stretch. If you normally fly
with a bunch of guys with 3m and you also fly 3m planes, you will probably
want the 3m tubing to be more versatile, but you may not be able to stretch
it as far with the fragile plane and may not make it to the top of the launch if you
under stretch the rubber.
Again, I will wait and listen to the "sages" on the list who have experience
with the BOT.

Here is a technique I have been using and it works
very well for this kind of damage and for delamination.
You take a small piece of music wire and poke some
holes along the crease. use the music wire to poke from
one hole to the next and lift the crease a bit.
Take some "Elmers Ultimate Glue" (formerly pro-bond)
and put it in the bottom of a paper cup. Add a few drops of water
to the glue and whip it up, then use a syringe to inject the glue from hole to
hole under the skin. You can actually skip every other hole and apply
tape over the injected holes, the glue will foam and expand to the next hole.
Let it kick of for an hour or 2 before shaving off the overflow.
There are alternate methods if you don't have a way to inject the glue:
You can squirt the glue in the holes, then squirt water in the holes, then
plunge the holes with the music wire to push the glue from one hole to
the next. Wipe off the mess with acetone, but don't
 saturate the rag, just dampen it and work quickly, so you don't damage
any foam.
You need to complete the application fast, it starts foaming in a couple minutes.
I have tried other brands and they don't make a very even or dense foam, the
Elmers works best. You can fill VERY Large voids this way.
For large damaged areas, pour the mix in the area as it starts to foam,
sand to shape after it kicks off, fill with light spackle and then re-glass or
just paint if it isn't structural.

Most people use the standard 1/2" x 25' bungee,
($38.00 shipped with connectors installed.)
This will take the average open class plane to over 100ft.
If you tape a hook on 2" forward of the normal location,
you can catapult the plane to higher launches.
I also have very short catapult bungees for landing practice.
These are 15ft. of unlimited class rubber with connectors.
($28.00 shipped) These also can be used with or without line.
They are slightly less powerful than the 1/2" rubber and also
have less duration of pull. The resulting launch is 50 to 100' depending
on the weight of the plane. These are good for shooting landings, it
only takes about 30 paces to launch the plane, so you don't spend
much time chasing down the gear.

I am now testing a plane using an 8amp 22v Li-poly pack and it makes
me very nervous. is it possible to put a fuse on the pack in case of a dead short?
The motor can pull up to 45 amps, but will normally only be pulling 8 to 20 amps.
What size would I use for short circuit protection?
I think it would be simple to solder an automotive fuse in series with the motor,
but I don't know what value.

It's a lot more than that!
I have had the 8uaf, 8uafs and now the 9C. It is so capable that I can't
think of anything it wont do, OK you may have to use a mix or 2 to do it,
but I have yet to see any radio as easy to program regardless.
You can just about assign any function to any switch (and there are a lot of switches)
you can jump into the menu and figure out the programming without a 6 month course
and 400 page manual.
You can get the TX from Bruckner hobbies for $249.00
It will work with a hitech "dial a hit" synthesizer.
It can take the big campac for 39 model memories.
It comes PCM or PPM selectable.
My only complaint will be when all those crappy switches start
breaking
I was just talking to a friend who was getting rid of his 9Z's because the
9C did everything he needed for the big IMAC stuff.
It is the most radio for the money without comparison.

This brings up another question, I have been flying some large planes with
2600 nimh flight and ignition packs. They are the most current cells
that can supply over 5C (I don't need that much current)
I am amazed at the daily loss of charge, they lose over 600mah per day
just sitting there You have to charge these things every time you go flying
if it has been more than a day.
Is this normal with the low resistance cells?
I think they are great for E-power, but for
 the flight packs on large gas, I think I would rather have NiCd or Lithium
just to avoid having to charge every other day whether I use them or not..
Be very careful charging them, I know of a couple people that have
had them explode on charge during a conservative charge cycle.

There was a similar fiber available in cloth from a British source,
I think it was called Dynel or something similar.
The home built boat community liked it for the final
layer on the bottom of the boat. It was so abrasion
resistant that you could beach the boats with very little
wear. This would probably be good on the skid area
of slopers..

If you want a wagon, consider a post 1983 Mercedes Turbo Diesel Wagon.
These cars sell for less than $7K used, get about 30 miles per gallon on
diesel fuel which is usually cheaper when gas prices spike and this car
has plenty of power.
The maintenance consists of oil and fuel filter changes and 200K is low mileage
for these cars.
I will be looking for one in the near future myself...

for cutting balsa, foam, plastic and aluminum..

Go to Home depot and get some aluminum coil (roofing valley) it comes in
different widths.
You can glue the print out to the metal and cut it with scissors. Dress it
with a small file.
For one off designs, just contact cement them to the foam. You can cut quite
a few wings with a set
before they wear out. If you want a more permanent template, use the
galvanized sheets for roof
patching, they are $0.59 and about 10"x6" Cut the template with a lower
section that can drop
into slots in a "wing panel holding board". You can use the same board for
all your templates.
I can make an aluminum template set in about 10 minutes, the galv. steel
takes about 30 minutes.
You can also use masonite and a bandsaw...

PS, one of the reasons for this landing was to minimize time and people in
the landing zone.
You know right away what the score is and you don't need to measure.
We wouldn't have been able to turn the LZ around for upwind landings because
the planes would then have to make their final over the spectator area, so
we were stuck with downwind landings once the wind came around.

How on earth did you stretch this to such a conclusion
Are you a liberal spin doctor?
Maybe on prescription anti depressants?
All I am saying is that the only response to companies that breach
contracts is to not support them. It is the only real power that the buyer
has.
If this results in a drop in their sales, they will hopefully learn
a lesson from it and operate in a more upstanding fashion the next time
around.
We don't have that many suppliers, so we are sort of stuck.
There is no way that this action will put anyone out of business,
but if enough people stand up for principles, it may influence future
decisions.
Or I suppose you can just roll over, say everything is fine and let some
businesses
screw others.

Hitec has had the highest standard of service, this is why
some of the recent events have surprised me.
Hopefully they will maintain that standard and also keep to their contracts.
Karlton has done more for the high end of this industry in the last 2 years
than the big 3 have in the last 15.
He built the Multiplex market in the US and should be compensated for this
or included in the loop.
This aspect isn't any fault of Hitec. MPX Germany should have negotiated
a better contract for Karlton. It really doesn't effect me because I have
wholesale
access through other distributors, but I believe in principle, so I will
stand up for it.
I hope Hitec comes through and does the right thing.

On  related note, I was contacted by "Zinc Air" They are producing a new
battery
with more capacity and lighter weight than the Lithium Ion/polymers and the
Zinc Air
battery can deliver much higher current, charge faster and isn't explosive.
Sounds like an RC dream doesn't it?
As usual, they are filling the military pipe line now and they won't be
available to
the public for a year or so.
They contacted me because they wanted to order 4 delta wings to demonstrate
the
batteries in a small UAV capacity. I wanted them to agree that they wouldn't
use
or reproduce the airframe for any other purpose besides demonstrating there
products,
but they weren't willing to do this. Makes you wonder.

Use the 2/0 snap swivels, they are rated at 225lbs.
I use them on the "Hosemonster" Highstarts. They are excellent.
You don't really need the ball bearing swivels, they are designed for use
under water
and don't take kindly to dust.
Those of you in very green areas can get away with them. but if you don't
need an extra swivel in the system, you may as well stick with the snap
swivels.
I buy mine in bulk directly from Roscoe.

I have been told about a fairly new motor.
The motor is the aerix speed 280 brushless. there are two versions: pm516 16
turn 6 to 8 cells, and pm520 20 cell turn 7 to 10 cell. both are $79 from
hobby lobby. It has a 480 output with less amp draw for 10 to 30oz planes.
22m diameter, 48mm long, 48grams weight, carbon fiber case. Recomended to
use jeti 18amp brushless controller. 8cells with 4.7X4.7 prop is 19,400 with
no gear=) Imagine 10 cells with that prop and motor!!!
They are running it on the new "hexcell" NiMh 1100 mah cells that weigh less
than 600 AR's and can deliver higher amps!
If anyone knows a wholesaler for this motor let me know..

I never register software, except for Norton for services.
I do write the codes on the disk with permanent ink.
Any free download programs get burned to disk in the original
download form and any codes are written on the disk.
This has proven useful with free programs that were somewhat useful,
but were changed at a later date and were no longer available for free.
I keep a "download" folder that has the zipped programs and there unzipped
form in separate
folders. I burn the whole download folder every now and then for back up.

Epoxies are more flexible and adhere better, but once you have epoxy on a
surface you are stuck
with using only epoxy there after.
This isn't as important with small airplanes, but can make a huge $$
difference with large boats!

This isn't necessary, EPP is very porous and the paint will stay put, you
need to put a light coat on first though.
You can also apply paint, then  3m spray 90, then another thin coat of paint
over the glue while it is still wet and then apply clear packing tape. 3m
highland is the only one that I have found to stand up to UV though.

If the strapping tape was put on with uneven ntension, you are sort of
screwed.
However!, you can try blocking the plane in some wood scraps with opposite
twist, then let it
remain that way for a week od 2. After this, try re-ironing the covering to
take up the wrinkles, you can also apply a strip of colored packing tape in
the proper orientation  to hold the new twist in tension.
This tape can be ironed later to increase the tension if needed.
I really dislike ultracote because it won't hold a set and this is a major
structural function on an EPP plane.
If you really want a bomb proof EPP plane stick with liquid contact cement,
strapping tape and colored packing tape. If weight isn't an issue you can
apply sign vinyl over the clear packing tape for a very strong skin that
will take paint for scale designs.

The best way is to use a solid rod that is about 1.5 to 2 times larger in
diameter than the OD of the tubing.
It can be aluminum or nylon, it really doesn't atter except that it needs to
be strong and the ends need to
be rounded with no sharp "shoulder".
Installation is made easier by lubing the tube and rod with a bit of hair
spray or contact cement and quickly
assembling while it is still very wet.
The tubing has an amazing ability to contract and grip the rod. Think about
a "wrist rocket" sling shot
with the rubber poised to smack you in the eye if it were to come off !!
My connectors are nylon with a small hole drilled in one end to take a #210
eyelet.
I use a stainless steel split ring on one end and a 225 pound fishing snap
swivel to connect to the other.
Of course the simple way would be to order the connectors, rings ands snap
link from me for about $8.00

After seeing the picture of such a fragile balsa ship, I would recommend
serious bicycle testing (see my trimming wings page).
The bicycle is your portable wind tunnel. You can also do this from a
convertible car or
from the bed of a pickup truck. You need a good clear area to maintain 15 to
25 mph while
trim the plane. Hold it at the CG in the clear air stream and trim it for
level flight.
Definitely trim it with a bit of extra nose weight for stability.
This will also show you how responsive it will be when you apply stick
input.
You will probably want to use negative expo to tame the controls.

I have built my shop into a 7'x22' Aljo travel trailer ($250.00 used), so I
know about using small spaces.
The hot wire table is against the rear wall. The rest of the space is
storage except for the bandsaw, which doubles as a work table area. The
table saw/router table sets up behind the bandsaw and can extend the
workspace or be placed out of the way. The storage bin to the side is waist
high and narrow and provides additional bench top space. One side wall has a
slide rack which is 2"x3" metal stud with the open ends of the C shape
facing each other. The bottom channel is above a low storage bin and the top
channel is 4ft. above it. This allows me to flex 4'x8' sheets of corroplast
into the channels and holds it snug against the wall.
The bandsaw is a craftsman with the large table that doesn't tilt (the saw
part tilts). I have added 3.5" wood rails to the front and back edge of the
table for clamping fences and to make the workspace larger. The crosscut
guide hangs on the back of the saw and the compressor sits under the saw.
I have always used a piece of equipment as a work table, in my old shop it
was the table saw and I had a 3'x 4' wooden top for it. I mount my router
under one of the wings of the table saw, so the saw doubles as a router
table.
You can hang all the small tools on the wall behind the work bench/hot wire
table area and hang the bows above the small tools since you won't be
grabbing them all the time.
I have racks that hold the long stock, spars, etc. up high out of the way
and I also store foam against the ceiling.
I also have a larger table that assembles outside for cutting the 8ft.
deltas and has a slot that a skill saw can be clamped into for a second
table saw. There is an exhaust fan (gable mount 1500cfm from home desperate
$30.00ish) that can be hung on a rear vent behind the hot wire table or
above it over the roof vent.
I am actually only using about 14ft. of the trailer since the front section
is currently set up as a digital recording booth!

PS, your shop is palatial in my opinion

I lost disk #1 and lost the program when my HD crashed in April and haven't
been able to reload the program.
Corel only supports the past 2 versions, so I am screwed..
I really need to edit some photos for the web site.

The blems are minor and will only add about 20 minutes to the normal

 is loaded with carbon black for UV protection.
I will be getting the "rubber milk" Hollyday Designs sold for treatment.
There are a number of protectants that are available, armor all is probably
the worst. I have witnessed things deteriorate much faster with armor all
than with nothing at all.
Some people put their rubber in a bucket of water for storage, this is a
good way to do it too.
I keep mine in a soft ice chest type bag, this keeps the moisture in and the
temps fairly constant.
I have been using the same catapult for 4 years without any special
treatment.
It is showing signs of being retired to a zip start...

It has a good roll rate and is very aerobatic.
That being said, here comes the shameless plug!
For $39.00 (shipping included) you can get the ALL EPP Noseeum which can be
built in a number
of different configurations. As a DLG it will out thermal ANY similar sized
plane I have seen and quite a few 60" HLG's. It doesn't have the roll rate
of the Herring, but it is fairly aerobatic on the slope.
I am in the process of rewriting the instructions and releasing a carbon
spar DLG version which will be about
$47.00 shipped It will have a carbon wing spar and tail boom and I have
switched to 2mm coroplast for the tail.
I also have come up with a way to turbulate the LE to restore the low speed
handling that is lost when you tape the LE. This version really works well
and is very indestructable like a foamie should be!

This sounds more like it, from what I understand, the insurance premium is
less than $3.00 per person, lets face it, it's not a hich risk event.

Maybe they could spend a little less on Muncie improvements and retirement
plans and increase the insurance.

My Mosquito Hawk fits your description. (that is why it was named)
It has curved dihedral in the tips and a bit of dihedral in the center
panels.
It works well, but the quick movement of the wing can cause an accelerated
stall if too much control
input happens too fast.
 You also need more throw than you would think and this would require very
large servos for a big wing.
A lot depends on the foil and it's ability to handle fast AOA changes.
It isn't the ideal set up for a thermal glider, but it is fun.

It works great if the plane is light enough and strong enough to take the
force.
I have designed one specifically for launching my Noseeum and have been
considering putting it in a kit form. I haven't done this simply because you
can get adequate launch height with discus launching and you don't need the
apparatus.
I haven't built a Noseeum specifically for atlatl launching, but I beleive
that launch heights of over 150ft. would be possible. I was launching to
around 100' to 120' with a noseeum with no spars, but it would flutter and
the tape would need re-ironing after about 6 launches. A couple of carbo
spars would fix that. I am not ready to give out the design details of the
atlatl and those that I emailed a copy to have promised not to pass it on,
but I may make the plans available if there is some interest.

Ahh, the cheap Chinese knock offs have finally arrived!
I knew they were working on molding EPP and the problems would eventually be
worked out.
I know someone that is working on a deal with a Chinese toy MFG. that will
put a small molded EPP
park flyer in every Walmart for about $30.00 WITH RADIO!
The radio only costs about $1.50 to produce!!
Hopefully the planes that cottage industries (such as myself ) produce will
be too complex and have too small of a market to be targetted by "The Borg"
of industry!
This could be a good thing in the long run though. It will force people like
me to start producing all the strange and exotic ideas that have been pushed
to the back burner in favor of more marketable designs.
It will also produce a supply of cheap electronics as the kiddie toys
progress.
I can see it eventually leading to fly by wire systems with crash proof
planes for the kids. The plane will have automated controls that keep it
flying, but respond and interpret your inputs.
The electronics and technology is already there, someone just has to come up
with the programming

I don't totally agree with this,I have taught a few people on my Avros and I
am going to paste a reply that I sent to Andy earlier and I will ad that I
have since checked out the MUGI site and I think the roll rate is rather
sluggish compared to my epp 36" deltas because they say you can do a couple
of rolls on the way up and a couple on the way down. Those of you that are
avid "Avro" flyers are now chuckling at this because you KNOW about roll
rate!

Here is my earlier reply to Andy:

This should be similar to my Avro, but probably heavier.
The Avros are good trainers but need to be set up by someone with good
piloting skills because they are very responsive. I can't imagine the
corroplast design flying as efficiently as the epp wings I produce because
of weight and the foil shape, but you can build it for next to nothing and
it should be a lot of fun on a bungee. Bungeeing is the way to train in my
opinion. The student gets a lot of launching and landings and this really
improves his skill.
You should give it a try, it will only cost a few bucks to build (build a
backup at the same time) you can trash it teaching, then swap the radio when
he can take care of version 2. It would build very fast if you put the radio
in with double sided tape.

I have to second this.
When I first heard complaints about no instructions, my first thought was:
"if you need instructions for these planes, you shouldn't be flying them!"
They are already completely built, short of wiring and radio installation
and
if you can't handle that part, you need to build some more of my foamies
first! :~)
I always determine CG by starting at about 35% back from the LE and adding
some weight to the nose, then move it back until it gets squirrelly.
Control throws, as much as possible, but tempered with exponential..

I am on a couple of boating lists and the discussion of deep cycle batteries
comes up occasionally.
The best value for the money is the Trojan golf cart  battery, it comes in
6v and 12v. Most people like the 6v. because the plates are a bit thicker
and they tolerate abuse better, but the 12v can be cycled deeper than any of
the other lead acid batteries. There is one better battery AGM I think, but
not sure.
It is better, but it is over twice the cost and won't last longer.
The Optima's can't be cycled as deeply as the Trojans without destroying
them in short order.Most deep cycle batteries claim that you can take them
to 50% of their capacity, but the truth is once you use over 30%you are
shortening the life of the battery.
The Optima's are very good for starting and other cold cranking high amp
applications that are more intermittent, this might also include launching
sailplanes! Just don't cycle them too deeply or you will have an expensive
plastic box of lead.

I have never had to do that with my 8uafs.
I have been told that the futaba puts out a stronger signal to the module
and the prizm module will abruptly fail.
I haven't had this problem, yet. But I only use it for inexpensive micro
stuff.
It is also not FCC| legal and if you were to be the cause of an accident at
any event, it would probably be cause enough for the AMA insurance to be
voided.

I have a real aversion to the knee jerk reaction of losing more freedoms in
the name of "safety"

Any jerk can have a false identification card and get on to a flight.
If they had 3 or more people, they wouldn't even have needed weapons.
Most people freeze and deny what is going on until it is too late to react.
An armed guard or flight crew (with a better cabin door) is the only thing
that could have thwarted this sort of act. They will also have to have a
protocal wherein the crew and passengers are expendable rather than giving
up control of the plane.
I have heard they are already screening for knifes and even plastic cutlery.
This is utter nonsense focusing on the weapon instead of making examples of
criminals before anything escalates to this degree.
There are plenty of sharp objects that will make it through a detector.
Maybe they should pass out large knifes as you board the plane.
How far do you think a hijacker would get against an armed mob of passengers
now?
I'm not trying to start a flame war, we are all in a bit of a rage, but more
public "control" is ALWAYS the worst solution and it never works anyway...

Only if you put contact cement on the fin first, you are better off covering
the fin with sign vinyl or colored packing tape, I usually wipe it down with
a harsh solvent like toluene first.

They don't print on the coroplast, they print on sign vinyl, then stick it
on the coroplast, or they cut they letters out and stick them on.
You can get spray paints to stick if you sand it aggresively, but nothing
will stick well, you are better off covering it with sign vinyl.

You can buy the super bright white or blue LED's, they can be up to $3.00 a
piece. Some are dual element.
I have driven airborne LEDs buy using groups of 2 wired in series, the
groups are wired in parallel to the 4.8v. flight pack.
My 36" Avro would run for 45min. with all 8 bright LED's burning from the
250mah flight pack.
Green and yellow are far more visible than red, it has to do with the color
sensitivity of our eyes. Blue is really bad.
If there is enough interest, I might be able to get a good surplus bulk
purchase going...

I use to slope a GL all the time, you need a lot of rudder throw, at least
45 deg. each side and you need ballast in strong lift.
They are tricky to bring back in one piece because they are really too
fragile for most of the slope sites I have flown.
You would be better off with an EPP Highlander.

There was a guy in Phx. that was in to the high end rocket gliders, he was
going to put one of the aerotec reloadable motors in a 6oz. version of my
36" delta wing.
His motor would put his 7oz. plane to over 1000 ft.
The motor can be configured with different nozzles and amounts of fuel.
He had it set to put out about 23oz. of thrust for 9 seconds, really cool
stuff.

I have been using a similar hinge method for about 3 years, I can't remember
if someone showed it to me or if it evolved from the "both surface tape"
method where you fold the surface over the wing and offset the hinge.
I space the aileron about 3/16" from the stationary surface and tape both
sides.
Then I dent both tape surfaces down the hinge line with a ball point pen.
Then on a flat surface, I press the aileron to the TE and it forces the
surfaces together. I don't bevel any of the surfaces, it isn't necessary.
You just have to be sure to allow enough space for the hinge to operate or
it can be too tight. (good for high speed bungees)

It is very local though, I just tried the weather underground site and it

I was seaching the net for lithium batts last night and found that the
lithium polymers are in production and available for Nokia cell phones.
Not cheap, $89 for 3.7v cell that is about 600mah and weighs less than 10
grams.
There are a number of free plans for chargers that would only cost $10 to
$15 to build, but I remember seeing a site somewhere with a kit for about
that much.
The Magellan site (magtech.com I think) has a $45 Li charger that is
reconfigurable.
I can't find the $7.50 800mah tadirans anymore, they were on the site with
the cheap charger kit which I have lost the URL for.
Anyway, I have some feelers out to MFG's for Li poly's and may be able to do
a group purchase if there is any interest.

It is a wall filler compound like drywall mud, but the light weight stuff is
"silicon borate" it comes in a small tub and is water soluble.
You can see it being used to fill voids and mount servos on my Pico Jet

This stuff can be thinned or brought back from near death with "Toluene".
It is heavy, so I would suggest thinning for an HLG.

Incidently, my Mosquito Hawk MHLG is a pod and boom design with the pod
being epp covered with a minimum amount of filament tape strips for
strength.
An HLG pod could be built the same way with just a couple of wraps of tape
or a thin layer of dip it. The covering is the heaviest part of the pod, so
I try to avoid it.

They have, it's called a Noseeum or a Red Herring!
They both side arm well, but, they launch almost vertical with no dance
involved unlike the 60" gliders which require a large radius for the discus
swing.
The micro class would be a blast if enough people jumped in the game.
You could have mini handlaunch golf on small fields, or an F-3b sort of
event where one throws the plane, rounds a pylon 80ft. away and comes back
through staggered hula hoops, the clock would start as the plane left his
hand.
There are a number of really fun events you can have with these little
planes and most of them could be held in front of your house or in a gym.
The radio gear is cheap now and with a simple hot wire, some blue foam and
tape, you could throw together disposable planes by the dozen for less than
$3.00 per airframe.
What will it take to get some people to jump in?

UPS now looks at a large package and says, Hmmm I could get 9-$6.00 packages
in the same space that the large package takes up, so I should charge
$54.00 to ship the large package!
They have so much small package buz. now, so they can afford to penalize the
large packages.
The market is ripe to start an oversize package shipping Co..

It's called Handlaunch Golf! and they are playing today at the SWC

Scobie is right about new formats in my opinion.
I haven't flown HLG contests, so maybe this doesn't mean much, but in my
opinion, if you can get 2 min. dead air times, you might as well have a TD
contest without winches. There are all kinds of things that could be thrown
in  to the picture, a small slalom on the landing approach, limbo bars, F3b
events like the most laps/the fastest laps, etc.
And then of coarse, one can't forget "All up last down"
Seems like fun to me.
