[Talk-transit] NOVAM is back
Good Morning, this is just to let you know that NOVAM is working again. It can be found on http://mappa-mercia.org/novam . Please update any old links and booksmarks. Since I decided not to implement a merging functionality on the website I have removed most of the old user interface elements and made the NOVAM viewer the new interface. Please tell me if you miss any functionality from the old user interface. I will update the colour coding of the bus stops at the weekend. Can I suggest that you place stops with issues on top of ones without issues on the browser, so that stops with problems are not obscured by nearby ones which are ok. [Talk-transit] NaPTAN case study
Hello all As part of the data.gov.uk experiments, I had several encounters with top brass of various gov departments. They were very excited in the NaPTAN import, none of them had heard about it and as far as I know it is the first example of crowdsourced improvements to a UK gov dataset. Very glad to see http://mappa-mercia.org/novam/ is back online today. You don't need to import the authority into OSM too. The bug reporting system could take an osm node id, then lookup the live naptan data for differences etc and these could be included in the report, which would go to the authority that has been found in the live naptan data. The other advantage of this, is that if the naptan bus stop changes hands (for whatever reason) then it'll be going to the right group, rather than an out of date group from some old OSM data. To be cleat, to date we have only been given permission to take occasional updates from NaPTAN with agreement from Traveline - and we do not have agreement to 'sniff' the live data on a regular basis as I think you are suggesting. However... I would not be surprised if Traveline agreed to allow access to the live data in time given the motivation that is building within the community to get the data right in both systems. Even with the above restriction, we will of course be able to parse the released version of NaPTAN against the OSM versions of the same data and produce reports for OSM contributors, which could include details of stops that appear to be out of the appropriate authority, or where the NaTPAN and the OSM data have diverged and where one or other of the datasets may be wrong. I will not be adding route_ref tags, all route information is going on relations. One aspect of NaPTAN which I have not investigated in any detail are Stop Place. I was hoping that we would have visualisation of the relations in OePNV-Karte but it does not parse the NaPTAN data. My impression is that many of these are peculiar in Nottingham: for instance the Nottingham Road / Vernon Road stop place includes two tram stops (http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/258878); and Nottingham Road / Haydn Road extends for around 1500 metres (http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/258691), with one stop in the group being a kilometre away from where I (as a bus user) would assume the stop place to be (i.e., by The Potters House church). Re: [Talk-transit] NaPTAN case study
I'd completely forgotten that tram stops were imported, because they were stored as bus stops in NaPTAN: this is a significant data issue with Nottingham data (3% of data). I think I've failed to make clear that these examples were of defined stop places which appear to me to be far too diffuse to have any coherence either for transport planners or transport users. However, I don't know enough about NaPTAN rules to be sure of this. I also don't know if anyone else has looked at stop places in the data which has been imported. I think it would be useful to have at least one example of conforming attribution (even though i know the attribution will change in the near future anyway) for people to use as a case study / reference. Of course if people were to be referencing this website, it would have to be absolutely correct and stay unchanged while it is used as a reference. Maybe a site could be mocked-up within the wiki somewhere? I haven't contributed to the wiki before - maybe this could be my calling - if anyone thinks it is needed. There are solutions, but all the ones I know about are commercial. I use a board based on MPNews from MessagePixels - I access it via NNTP, others use it as an email list or a web based board. There is a bit of culture clash - people who use the threaded (web based, nntp) forms tend to snip more than the email people like, for example, but it seems to work. I'm a bit surprised that there isn't an open source equivalent. There's FUDforum ( http://fudforum.org ) that I use which allows RSS + Email + NNTP sync. Not all perfect, and I'm not sure that it offers much over Gmane + mail lists, but the base is the web interface, so that works fairly well. ___ talk mailing list talk@openstreetmap.org http://lists.openstreetmap.org/listinfo/talk

Re: [talk-au] How to tag a non-existent road
If highway=gazetted is ambiguous and most people are going to be puzzled by highway=non-existent, might I suggest highway=planned or highway=proposed (I occasionally find myself (walking) on highway=overgrown – but I am not suggesting adding this.) 2009/10/22 Evan Sebire e...@sebire.org I like 'gazetted_road', but I think it should be 'non-existent'. Looking at dictionary.com(which isn't a great reference) nobody would understand gazetted road, then I tried the best German translator dict.cc and it failed. Googling Gazetted road comes back with variety of answers, none of the first 10 results mean non-existent so Gazetted is probably ambiguous. looks like a clear winner with non-existent. [talk-au] Garmin Handheld with osm and shonkymaps
Hi All, I'm looking at buying a handheld gps, probably Garmin, that can have the osm maps and shonkymaps loaded. Re: [talk-au] Garmin Handheld with osm and shonkymaps
Hi, I dont know much about shonkymaps, but Im using a Garmin 60Csx with osm+contour maps for bushwalking. I dont miss any map details, and if, I add them.. My opinion about the device: In comparison to other models, the 60Csx delivers the best package in terms of accuracy, device layout and price. The Vista HCx is similar in regards to features, but I dont like the smaller screen and lack of buttons. If you dont need the barometer (what I dont use at all) or the compass (what I love, especially when reception is poor), then go for the slim brother of both above mentioned, and save a few bucks. For a floating (but bulkier) unit, the 76C(s)x has similar/same features. There are a couple of sites where you can get prebuild OSM images for Garmin, e.g. here: http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php and here http://www.osmaustralia.org/garmin.php However, thats not ideal for me in terms of rendering, so Im creating custom maps from OSM data using mkgmap. Re: [talk-au] Garmin Handheld with osm and shonkymaps
I'll look into shonkymaps. Thats probably a good backup where OSM still needs improvement. I didnt go for the 76, because its too bulky for me. The 60 series is waterproof to the same standard (IPX7) as the 76. I have tied the device properly to my boat or myself whenever Im on the water. This compensated floating for me, and on the car or on the bike, I can enjoy the better button placement of the 60er. (buttons belong _below_ the display for me..) For the maps, Im preparing a micropage to host my scripts and other files, as there is a bit more required than just a short mail to render custom IMG-maps. Will post that here when its up. For the contour-maps, I am using http://www.lizarddrinking.net/ which is made from SRTM maps. Im tried to render shaded contour maps, but this seems like a difficult process and is further down on my list. The lizard contours are just lines, but they are well made (regarding zoom levels), and using sendmap (http://www.cgpsmapper.com/) you can combine those maps with the osm and shonky. This will create several layers (in a single mapfile) on the GPSr, what you can (de)select on the go. -Ben Ross Scanlon wrote: Hi Ben, Thanks. Re: [talk-au] Garmin Handheld with osm and shonkymaps
Hi Pete, Thanks for that. Most of the areas we are intending on travelling to at the moment have little or no osm coverage, even the roads. So the 4x4 will have the vehicle pc with osm and topo maps on gpsdrive and the hand held will have shonkymaps, which are similar to the topomaps on the 4x4, and what osm data that is there. From these two we will probably go with the 76Csx, which can be bought cheaper than a 60Csx at the moment. Now the next question, how big (8Gb, 16Gb) a microSD card can these use. I can see no info in the specs and none of the retailers show this either. Re: [talk-au] Garmin Handheld with osm and shonkymaps
According to Garmin, the limitation of 2GB per mapset was removed in firmware 3.90 for the 60Csx http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=1245 However, there are other limits in terms of tile numbers (I think its 2025), what is probably reached sooner than the size limit. I also read about problems with SDHC cards, but others report that 6GB SHDCs work. So even if there are reports that cards larger than 2GB work in the 60Csx (and probably in the 76er), I would go for one of these both ways if 2GB isnt enough: 1. test the (+2GB) card before you buy, but create multiple mapsets with different file names. Connect the GPSr to a computer to change mapsets (by renaming the files), or put the card into a PDA or similar to do that (You cannot change mapsets on the device itself, only the layers with one mapset.) 2. buy multiple 2GB cards and swap them on the go However, the whole shonkymap is about 400MB. My custom OSM map for whole Australia is about 120MB. (and there is more data included than in most other OSM-imgs I found so far) For the 5m contour maps, thats close to the 2GB limit for whole Australia. So if you select the contour maps for the areas you want to see (or are happy with the less detailed shonky contours), a 2GB card should make you (and your wallet) happy.. -Ben Ross Scanlon wrote: Hi Pete, Thanks for that. Actually finally found the answer on the Garmin site. For anyone interested. If at the most recent unit software version, these limitations are: - There is no limitation to the size of SD/microSD card used but the device will only recognize 4GB of detailed mapping - Each expandable memory device will be able to recognize up to 2,025 detailed mapping segments If 2,025 detailed mapping segments are loaded to an SD/microSD card but does not reach 4GB worth of data, the unit will not show any more detailed mapping than what is provided by the mapping segments. Re: [talk-au] Garmin Handheld with osm and shonkymaps
Thanks for the quote from the Garmin site. So.. if you log at the smallest interval possible (1 sec), you will produce about 12MB of tracklogs per 24 hours. In theory, 12GB is enough space for ]~1000 24-hour-days, but in fact the file system used by Garmin is (or was?) limiting the number of files that can be written into a single folder to 255. A new tracklog is started at least every day, but also on every switch-off/on. During normal usage, logging is over after 3 or 4 months. As far as I remember, you are not notified about that on the device, it just stops logging. Only carrying a laptop or any other device to modify the SDCard helps. In this case, moving the data to another folder on the card does the trick. Another problem: the inability on those Garmin devices to show all track data you log. You can save 20 logs, and they can be shown on the device in addition to the current tracklog, but you cant display all your tracklogs without converting them into an IMG-overlay. Depending on the chosen log interval, 20 saved logs can be used up quickly, and it requires manual interaction in certain time intervals. If you rely on those tracklogs to find your way back a few days later (or even hours later if you log on 1sec and forget to save manually), you could get a problem.. Id love to find a way around this, but until now, the above mentioned conversion is the only one I found. -Ben Ross Scanlon wrote: Now the next question, how big (8Gb, 16Gb) a microSD card can these use.
Any ideas?
Was dann?
