Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Subwoofers from a high-end perspective?
Caleb -- Thanks for the interesting post. I put Floyd Toole's book on my amazon wish list. From a implementation standpoint, I took away two things: 1) At least two subs 2) That, at a minimum, the subs be equalized ( ~100Hz, though 500Hz would be better). Now, if I understand correctly, you are suggesting that IIR filters are better than FIR filters. I know of three options for doing the sub EQ, the built-in PEQ in a Velodyne DD-10, or a Behringer DEQ2496, or Inguz. I assume that the PEQ of the Velodyne EQ the DEQ2496 are IIR-based? (I guess I plug the DEQ2496 into the 'digital loop' of my Transporter?) With Inguz, aren't there two ways of doing this? One is to build a filter from a sweep using DRC (wish I could figure out which DRC parameter would only apply this to 500Hz). But this would be a FIR filter. The other way is using the EQ function in Inguz. I'm not quite sure if this method is FIR or IIR. Inguz describes it as: The InguzDSP EQ filters arent like that. Theyre semi-parametric linear-phase shelving filters. By semi-parametric I mean that you only have two adjustable parameters: frequency and amplitude. And shelving means that the frequency response in between two adjacent bands is a gentle (cosine-based) slope. (See: http://inguzaudio.com/blog/2007/09/27/eq-filters-shelving-and-parametric/) The other question I have is about the pros/cons of active vs passive crossovers for subs? Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Has it gotten any easier to rip Dolby or DTS 5.1 tracks to play on Squeezebox
I have played back 5.1 DTS files successfully from an SB2 into a Sony surround sound receiver. The hard part is the ripping/transcoding, not the playback. If you want to skip the ripping/transcoding steps, try downloading some 5.1 DTS files from this Swedish Radio site: http://www.sr.se/cgi-bin/mall/index.asp?ProgramID=2446 or http://www.sr.se/cgi-bin/mall/artikel.asp?ProgramID=2446Artikel=740607 These are zipped .wav files. Just unzip them and put them in your SC music directory. (And make sure that you have .wav file format supported). You need to make sure that you are not modifying the signal in any way. This means full volume (or even better digital output fixed), no crossfade and no gain control. It's been a few years since I tried, but it used to be the case that Softsqueeze could not playback DTS files (you would just get noise). Somehow the Java sound libraries that this app uses were modifying the digital signal -- meaning that you were not getting bit-perfect playback. Don't know if it has been fixed in recent versions. muski -- muski Transporter via XLR-Bryston BP26DA-Bryston 4B SST-Wilson Watt Puppy 7s Transporter via XLR-Headroom Max Balanced Headphone Amp-Balanced AKG701s muski's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3670 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53634 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I had one in my old house and it worked really nicely with the in-ceiling/wall speakers (SpeakerCraft Canton) I had around the house. I didn't use it for my main living room or office system, but I did use it in the kitchen, bedrooms outside. It was terrific for casual listening. See: http://www.ada.net/products/av/power_amps.php The amp was controlled by an AMX home automation system which switched sources into the ADA amp as directed by various panels remotes around the house. The AMX system was incredibly expensive, extremely difficult to program and never really satisfactory. Also, the wall panels and remotes were absolutely awful and absurdly expensive -- no where near as nice as an SB Controller. I have listened to the above with Sennheiser 650HD and AKG701 headphones in both normal and balanced configurations. Overall, I am a huge fan of Headroom products and find them very complementary to the Slimdevices products. In particular, the Max Balanced Amp paired with the Transporter has been an acoustic epiphany for me. I listen to so much more music now that I have this system. Among the many things I like about this combo, the amount of detail they reveal is staggering (sometimes to the level of distraction -- conductors turning the page on the score, instrument keypresses, etc...). The Desktop and the Total BitHead headphone amps are also very enjoyable to listen to and are like all Headroom amps, excellent value for the money. However, I think that at their respective price points, the Slimdevices DACs are simply better than the Headroom ones. At the lower end, I found I preferred the stock SB3 DAC to the Desktop DAC (after a month I only used the RCA connectors). And at the high-end, the Headroom Max DAC is simply no match for the Transporter's DAC -- which is why I ordered my Max Balanced amp without the DAC. (To be fair, I far prefer the DAC in the Total BitHead to the DAC in my MacBook Pro). Assuming that you are looking to use the Micro Amp with an SB3 as a source, I would either get just the Amp and not the DAC, or, even better, reallocate the money for the Micro DAC to the headphone amp and get something like the new Ultra Micro or even the Desktop Amp. As I have upgraded through the Headroom amplifier product line, I have never been disappointed. muski -- muski SB3-Bryston BP25DA-Bryston 4B SST-Wilson Watt Puppy 7 Transporter via XLR-Headroom Max Balanced Headphone Amp-Balanced AKG701s HD650s muski's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3670 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=39445 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

My understanding is that the NoCorrection filter does freq response correction only (ie no phase correction). Also, I believe that the TestConvolution files don't apply mic correction. An earlier post mentioned that the REQW developers might add a feature to apply a mic cal file to an imported Impulse Response (now it only applies it to recordings done with REQW) Inguz, chime in if I'm wrong on this. muski -- muski SB3-Bryston BP25DA-Bryston 4B SST-Wilson Watt Puppy 7 Transporter via XLR-Headroom Max Balanced Headphone Amp-Balanced AKG701s HD650s muski's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3670 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35615 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Thank you -- an explanation that makes sense! Now I understand why my normal flat Test Convolutions look like my ECM calibration file. It's consistent -- if my system room were (theoretically) perfectly flat, the resulting uncalibrated response would look identical to the freq response curve of the mic. I also confirmed this in the real world. Using a sweep recorded by a calibrated ECM8000 mic, I created a filter using normal.drc with a flat target and my ECM8000's custom calibration file (not the standard one in DRC). I then used an Earthworks M30 to record a Sweep (with EQ in L channel) test tone with the ECM8000_normal_flat filter in use. I processed this and looked at the Impulse_Response_Measured graph. (Although the Impulse_Response_Measured file is not corrected with the M30's mic calibration file, the M30 is flat enough without correction for this test). Anyway, although the resulting freq response is far from perfect, it is moves around a flat-ish line, and does not have the big +10db hump at 10k that is characteristic of my ECM's calibration file. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Earthworks M30 vs ECM 8000 side-by-side test for Inguz DRC
I took measurements today with both of the mics, using a Sound Devices USBPre audio interface. Very interesting results! The first chart shows the freq response of the left channel measurements (Due to differing sensitivities the sweeps were at slightly different levels. So I shifted the ECM8000 up about 4db for the sake of comparison). The second shows the phase response (built with the drc Octave scripts). The third shows the normal filters computed with a flat target curve and each of the mic's calibration files (unshifted traces). The ECM8000 filter looks a lot like the mic cal file profile. (I am still suspicious/baffled about drc's use of mic cal files). The fourth chart shows the frequency response of the two mics -- ie a plot the calibration files. I had the ECM8000 calibrated by a third party and Earthworks provides a calibration file for all their mics for an extra $50. It's interesting to see that the ECM8000 does mostly OK in the lower freq, but not so well above 1KHz. Only had time to get these measurements done and have yet to do a listening test. One day I'll try same test with an Radio Shack SPL and also compare the Tascam US-122L to the Sound Devices USB Pre. muski +---+ |Filename: mic_cal.jpg | |Download: http://forums.slimdevices.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=3437| +---+ -- muski SB3-Bryston BP25DA-Bryston 4B SST-Wilson Watt Puppy 7 Transporter via XLR-Headroom Max Balanced Headphone Amp-Balanced AKG701s HD650s muski's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3670 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38758 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

I'll have a look at the other Octave phase plots. From the DRC documentation, it's not clear how much benefit there is to modifying the phase information. Also, it looks like you need to modify the .drc files to make sure all the MC flags are set correctly. From http://drc-fir.sourceforge.net/doc/drc.html: Starting from version 2.0.0 DRC lets you specify the phase for the target post filter stage. Phase specification should be placed after the amplitude specification and should be expressed in degrees. Following the example above: 0 -40 0 18 -20 45 20 0 90 2 0 180 21000 -40 90 22050 -100 0 If not specified a value of 0 is assumed. Setting a phase different than 0, i.e. flat, is useless within normal HiFi systems in almost all circumstances. Furthermore the phase specification is used only if the PSFilterType is L, else any phase specification is wiped out by the minimum phase filter extraction. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Earthworks M30 vs ECM 8000 side-by-side test for Inguz DRC
I used the Sweep (with EQ in L channel) test tone and, using the M30 microphone recorded sweeps for both the M30_normal_flat and ECM8000_normal_flat filters. Below are the plots of Impulse_Response_Measured and phase response (1/6 octave smoothing). Since the M30 is pretty close to flat even (see the first post), the fact that these are not mic cal adjusted shouldn't make much difference. It is interesting that the ECM8000 plot, though not without some issues, does looks flat-ish (ie at least it doesn't have the huge hump like the ECM8000's mic freq reponse plot). This suggests that the mic cal files are correctly processed in drc? The M30 mic cal file was not applied to the measured results shown above, but as the M30 is reasonably flat it shouldn't make much difference. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] DRC/Inguz and Microphone Calibration
Glad that seeing my calibration file was helpful. There are some others around that show a similar response curve, though none seem to be as bad as mine (out by more than 9db). Gotta admit a professionally calibrated mic would come in handy, who knows what else dwells on these recordings. I have exactly the same feeling. After using Inguz for a few months, I have more and more faith in DRC and less and less in my recording gear. I just have this feeling that my ECM8000/Tascam122L aren't up to the task. My suspicion is that virtually any mic can record well enough to do the phase correction, but that you need something professional to get good frequency response correction (even a Radio Shack SPL). So, I have an Earthworks M30 microphone and a Sounds Devices USB Pre audio interface coming this week. The M30 is supposed to be +/- 0.5 db, and for another $50 you can call Earthworks with the mic's serial number and get them to email a custom mic cal file. I'll remeasure and post my results here when I have a chance. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] itunes v SB3
Another option is using an Airport Express ($99). For Apple lossless: itunes - Apple lossless G5 - wirelessly via AirTunes to an AirPort Express-- optical out to DAC (thinking about the Stello DA220 Mk2). DAC to amp. For FLAC: VLC- FLAC - G5 - wirelessly via Rogue Ameoba Airfoil to an AirPort Express-- optical out to DAC (thinking about the Stello DA220 Mk2). DAC to amp. (VLC is a Mac shareware media player. Airfoil is the equivalent of AirTunes but allows you to capture the audio out from any application). You also need a special optical cable (mini-Toslink to Toslink). I once tested this setup by playing DTS files wirelessly from my Mac to the AirPort connected to a surround processor. They decoded fine, indicating that this is a bit-perfect solution (volume at 100% and all the equalizer, etc. off). I used the above setup until I got my first SB2. Audio quality debates aside, I like having a display next to my preamp, and the flexibility of having both a remote and a web interface if I am at my computer. I have my collection entirely in FLAC. Just to fan the flames more, what about getting a Transporter instead of the Stello DAC? The Transporter has a wonderful DAC -- as good or better than the one in my Bryston 25DA preamp. My MacBook Pro 2.0ghz Intel Core Duo can handle the processing load easily, and it only uses about 25% of one CPU. Another issue is what the software player and PC sound apps drivers might be doing to the playback stream along the way. It's been a while since I played with Softsqueeze, but when I tried it a few years ago I was not getting bit-perfect playback (tested by playing a 5.1 DTS file into a surround receiver -- it couldn't decode it). This was nothing to do with Softsqueeze (a great product), but the Java sound libraries and the Windows kmixer. Anyway, you may want to check if this has been addressed in recent versions of Softsqueeze. Also have read up on ASIO drivers and try playing with foobar2000 and winamp playback which can use these drivers. The DTS decode check is always a reassuring test make sure no bits are being mangled in the playback process. muski -- muski SB3-Bryston BP25DA-Bryston 4B-SST-Watt Puppy 7s Transporter-Headrom Max Balanced Amp-Balanced AKG701s HD650s muski's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3670 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=36784 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

Haven't done a ton of listening with this, but immediately had to switch from 'normal' to 'soft' -- it was just too bright and there was some occasional weird digital distortion (maybe it was clipping). Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter listening test
Very interesting test... I have been listening side-by-side to a Transporter (XLR out) vs an SB3-digital coax-Bryston BP25DA (DAC). I was listening to a variety of FLAC files of EAC ripped CDs. Through a balanced headphone rig, the only difference I could hear a slightly wider soundstage (n.b., I hadn't read this thread at this point), and maybe the Tranporter was slightly brighter. When I switched over to my speaker rig (4B-SST-Watt Puppy 7s) I really couldn't hear much difference at all. This is probably because my listening room is an acoustic disaster (concrete floors, lots of glass, etc). Then I switced on the Inguz filter and all of the sudden the differences between the two systems became surprisingly audible again, more so than through my headphone rig. (Soundstage width in particular). Made me want to make the Transporter a permanent fixture in my speaker rig. Obviously, if the room correction is working, the most likely explanation is that I was hearing the sources more 'truly'. I had another thought, though. If I read things correctly, when I listen to my FLAC-encoded CD files without Inguz at fixed digital volume out, the DACs would be working at 16-bit, whereas with the Inguz plugin, everything comes out at 24-bit (think this is right). Does anyone have a data on whether DACs perform significantly differently at different bit-depths (SNR, jitter)? Could it have anything to do with up-sampling (Bryston DAC) vs not (Transporter)? (BTW, I realized a fairer test would have been Transporter XLR out vs Transporter digital coax into the Bryston DAC). muski -- muski muski's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3670 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=35068 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles
Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Inguz Audio tips and initial impressions
Greetings from the newest Inguz fan. Inguz is the ultimate WAF-antidote... All of my music is in FLAC format. What is the minimal file type set that I need (server settings-File Types). Do I need FLAC (built-in) flac/InguzDSP or just the latter. Any other file types required? Also, do you require any other plugins? CLI interface, etc. BTW, for some reason all of your file types are showing up twice. I have two players connected (and synched)... Lastly, does the displayed data rate (in the track info) change to show that the plugin is converting to 24-bit (as opposed to 16bit)? For Acourate, I don't know, but I assume you'll be able to use one or other of these two formats. Thanks -- this worked. I was able to take measurements in Audacity using my old Radio Shack analog SPL hooked directly to the line in of my MacBook Pro (running Bootcamp/XP). No mic, no preamp, no external USB audio card. It's hard to assess the measurement quality of the RS SPL, but all I can say is that using the 'normal' correction, I am very pleased with the results. My system definitely sounds better -- tighter imaging, wider soundstage and better mid-bass response. That said, the improvement was noticeable but not wildly dramatic, probably a good sign that nothing funky was going on. So it seems there is a much lower barrier to entry to getting inguz up and running. (It would be interesting for someone with both an RS SPL and a high-end mic/preamp/external soundcard system to run a comparison test.) A couple of notes: 1) By changing the db sensitivity of the SPL (eg. 70, 80, 90 db) I was able to the get the mic line-in at the same input volume. (sort of equivalent to a vol adjust on a mic preamp). 2) There was some audible background noise in the recordings, but it didn't seem to hurt anything. 3) I was running my SB3 through my DAC/preamp. In terms of measuring left/right, I just disconnected the unused channel from the amp. I assume that this ok, and that the sweep tone is identical for both channels. 4) I used DRC. I edited all of the .drc files to point to the RSSPL.txt mic calibration file above. (I have a question about this file which I'll post in another response) If you'd like to see any of the the measurement or cal files, let me know and I'll post them. Thanks! I noticed that the RSSPL.txt calibration file seems to start at 515Hz and go up from there. Elsewhere, I found a calibration file for a RS SPL that looks like it has calibration values from 7hz to 200hz. However, it only has two values per line, not three. It looks like this: 7.00-37.33 8.00-34.87 9.00-32.76 10.00 -30.35 11.00 -27.61 12.00 -24.71 13.00 -22.21 ... Is there any way to prepend this data to your RSSPL.txt file to allow for correction of lower frequencies? I have attached the entire file. Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Inguz Audio tips and initial impressions
Is it possible to get measurements using an SPL instead of a 'real' mic like the ECM8000? I have been looking at measurement sw such as Room EQ Wizard (http://www.hometheatershack.com/roomeq/) and RPlusD/ETF (http://www.etfacoustic.com/RPlusDSite/index.html). Not sure if these are doing the same thing as the Inguztools, but they both let you use a Radio Shack analog SPL meter as the mic (no preamp required either). I guess I am asking if I can either a) use an SPL with Audacity, or b) get useful measurements for the Inguz plug-ins from either of the above packages. coop250 -- My end-to-end balanced headphone setup is wonderful (warning: very addictive!). I noticed a slight increase in detail and a very signficant improvement in imaging over the high-end unbalanced headphone system I had before (both with Transporter as source). I have yet to find a headphone amp with a built-in DAC that sounds better than the Transporter. I, too, prefer having analog volume control in the headphone pre/amp (and in my Bryston preamp, for that matter). I have never really tried doing a digital/analog vol control listening test, but it always seemed counter-intuitive to me to spend all the time and effort getting bit-perfect rips in EAC only to then start modifying those same bits for volume control in the digital stage... So far, I only have my AKG 701s wired for balanced use. I have read good things about Sennheiser HD650s in balanced mode, and am thinking about getting a set of balanced cables for my pair. [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Need to brighten sound of new SB3 -- Transporter or DAC?
First, I totally agree that the analog stage of the SB3 currently is not at a hey, buddies, listen to this... level. But, through a good DAC it's close. I wonder if you might be giving up too easily on the Transporter. I've had mine for a month now, and the more I listen to it, the more I like it (esp. for its upper end). I wouldn't call it super 'bright', but I would say it is has a medium-brightness and accuracy that doesn't tire me out (I listen to mostly classical music). Alas, my big system is in storage (BP25DA, 4BSST WP7s), so I can't yet offer you a side-by-side comparison of the Byrston vs Transporter DACs. However, through my Headroom Max Desktop DAC/amp and AKG701s (albeit, an imperfect comparison), I can tell you that I really, really enjoy listening to the Transporter DAC, certainly as much as I enjoyed listening to the Bryston DAC. Before my Transporter arrived, my opinion of Slimdevices (from owning an SB2 SB3) was Wow, those guys really understand how to put together a digital transport. After a month of TP listening, I now feel that they also know a thing or two about how to build a great DAC. It is at the hey-buddies-listen-to-this-level. I recently realized that regardless of how great a digital transport it is, the Transporter's DAC is worthy of being evaluated against the best of the standalone ones. If you can get a 30 day trial on it, I'd give it a chance. If it doesn't work for you, return it and you'll be one month closer to the release of the Bryston DAC... -- muski muski's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3670 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=31533 ___ audiophiles mailing list audiophiles@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/audiophiles

If you like classical music, the Philadelphia Orchestra has an online music store that sells recordings of their live concerts in MP3 FLAC format (yes, lossless downloads!). I have downloaded a few things, and it all works well and sounds great. Very progressive -- I wish more orchestras would do this. See: http://www.thephiladelphiaorchestra.com/ (The Philadephia Orchestra has always been out in front: it was the first symphonic orchestra to make electrical recordings (1925), the first to perform its own commercially sponsored radio broadcast (1929), the first to perform on the soundtrack of a feature film (Paramounts The Big Broadcast of 1937), the first to appear on a national television broadcast (1948), the first American orchestra to record the complete Beethoven symphonies on compact disc (1988), and the first major orchestra to give a live cybercast on the internet (1997).) Turns out that they partnered with a site called www.nugs.net, which makes most of its money selling downloads of live rock concerts of bands like the Dave Matthews Band, Metallica, Phish, the Grateful Dead, Barenaked Ladies, Govt Mule, Widespread Panic and the String Cheese Incident. I recently purchased the Serious Audiophile Package from HeadRoom, which, for $2000, includes their 'Max'ed out' Desktop Amp, Desktop Power Supply and a pair of the recently introduced AKG 701s. It is connected to my Transporter and sounds absolutely wonderful. Because this headphone amp also has its own excellent oversampling DAC, I can connect it to both the Transporter's digital and RCA analog outputs, and flip between them when I feel like doing some critical listening. (A very, very close call, but I'd give the nod to the Transporter DAC for a smoother, less grainy high-end. I do much prefer the Headroom Max DAC to the SB3 DAC, though) The AKG 701s are a huge improvement over my Sennheiser HD 650s. I was surprised at how audible the difference was. Note that this is not a balanced amp, and so cannot be connected to the Transporter's XLR balanced outputs. Headroom does make some balanced amps, but they are even pricier.
