Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] BE DEQ2496Transporter connection

2010-11-11 Thread muski

I have been thinking about getting a DEQ2496, too. It's on my Xmas

It has a word clock, right? Are you connecting that, too?

Are you going to use Room Eq Wizard for the measuring or is there some
other way to set it up. I have an Earthworks mic that I am hoping to
use for it. I was thinking of only use the DEQ2496 to EQ freq 1000Hz

Any other tips?

P.S. My first post here in ages -- nice to be back among old friends!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Subwoofers from a high-end perspective?

2009-09-29 Thread muski

Caleb --

Thanks for the interesting post. I put Floyd Toole's book on my amazon
wish list.

From a implementation standpoint, I took away two things:

1) At least two subs

2) That, at a minimum, the subs be equalized ( ~100Hz, though 500Hz
would be better).

Now, if I understand correctly, you are suggesting that IIR filters are
better than FIR filters. I know of three options for doing the sub EQ,
the built-in PEQ in a Velodyne DD-10, or a Behringer DEQ2496, or Inguz.

I assume that the PEQ of the Velodyne EQ the DEQ2496 are IIR-based?
(I guess I plug the DEQ2496 into the 'digital loop' of my Transporter?)

With Inguz, aren't there two ways of doing this? One is to build a
filter from a sweep using DRC (wish I could figure out which DRC
parameter would only apply this to 500Hz). But this would be a FIR
filter. The other way is using the EQ function in Inguz. I'm not quite
sure if this method is FIR or IIR. Inguz describes it as:

The InguzDSP EQ filters aren’t like that. They’re “semi-parametric
linear-phase shelving filters”. By “semi-parametric” I mean that you
only have two adjustable parameters: frequency and amplitude. And
“shelving” means that the frequency response in between two adjacent
bands is a gentle (cosine-based) slope.

(See:
http://inguzaudio.com/blog/2007/09/27/eq-filters-shelving-and-parametric/)

The other question I have is about the pros/cons of active vs passive
crossovers for subs?

Thanks,
muski

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] AAC Plus support now in iTunes 9.0 iPhone 3.1

2009-09-16 Thread muski

Was messing around today and discovered what seems to be one of the most
under-published features of the iTunes 9.0 and iPhone OS 3.1 updates --
support for AAC Plus streams. Apple is finally catching up to
Slimdevices...

Let's hope that more and more sites start streaming in this format. I
am listening to Philadelphia's WRTI on a 96kbps AAC Plus stream at this
moment -- very listenable with very few artifacts.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Has it gotten any easier to rip Dolby or DTS 5.1 tracks to play on Squeezebox

2008-10-12 Thread muski

I have played back 5.1 DTS files successfully from an SB2 into a Sony
surround sound receiver. The hard part is the ripping/transcoding, not
the playback.

If you want to skip the ripping/transcoding steps, try downloading some
5.1 DTS files from this Swedish Radio site:

http://www.sr.se/cgi-bin/mall/index.asp?ProgramID=2446 or
http://www.sr.se/cgi-bin/mall/artikel.asp?ProgramID=2446Artikel=740607

These are zipped .wav files. Just unzip them and put them in your SC
music directory. (And make sure that you have .wav file format
supported).

You need to make sure that you are not modifying the signal in any way.
This means full volume (or even better digital output fixed), no
crossfade and no gain control.

It's been a few years since I tried, but it used to be the case that
Softsqueeze could not playback DTS files (you would just get noise).
Somehow the Java sound libraries that this app uses were modifying the
digital signal -- meaning that you were not getting bit-perfect
playback. Don't know if it has been fixed in recent versions.

I had the same issue until I discovered AAC+ streams. I find that even
64kbps AAC+ streams sound way better than 128kbps MP3 streams.

Unfortunately, AAC+ is not natively supported on SC and are not
available on the SqueezeNetwork. However using the mplayer plugin you
can easily get SC to play these streams. For installation details see
the wiki:

http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/AACplus

As I have mentioned before on these forums, my favorite station is
Radio Swiss Classic, a 64kbps AACPlus stream. No ads, good sound
quality and great programming. I don't even bother with an FM tuner
these days.

There is a list of 207 AACPlus stations on www.tuner2.com, with all
kinds of genres, with the AAC+ bitrate for each station listed.

Xanadu --

First, I think your idea is really nice.

As far as amps are concerned, Audio Design Associates makes some nice
multi-channel/zone amps. I had one in my old house and it worked
really nicely with the in-ceiling/wall speakers (SpeakerCraft Canton)
I had around the house. I didn't use it for my main living room or
office system, but I did use it in the kitchen, bedrooms outside. It
was terrific for casual listening. See:
http://www.ada.net/products/av/power_amps.php

The amp was controlled by an AMX home automation system which switched
sources into the ADA amp as directed by various panels remotes around
the house. The AMX system was incredibly expensive, extremely difficult
to program and never really satisfactory. Also, the wall panels and
remotes were absolutely awful and absurdly expensive -- no where near
as nice as an SB Controller.

I think the idea of using multiple Controller/Duets is actually really
elegant and relatively economical and is something I would definitely
consider in my next house.

It is possible to completely disable InguzEQ for specific players. You
need to go through the restart process for all of your players (even
the ones you don't want to use). This will create a settings file that
is named MAC Id of the player.settings.conf. Edit this file and look
at the third line and add Bypass=true to the end. Ie:

Client ID=xx:xx:xx:xx:xx:xx Bypass=true

This completely disable InquzEQ for this player. You will know that
it's working because the log file will say Processing is disabled;
passing through

Make sure you use DRC 3.0 to build your filters. It is much improved.

I also find the Transporter DAC to be breathtaking through a high-end

Just going through the same exercise myself. I have about 100GB of FLAC
files ripped with EAC. I have also created a 192kbps AAC version of the
same library for my iPhone and to carry on my Macbook -- this is about
30GB.

I am looking at a new portable headphone rig (iPod with the iQube

the process of transcoding all the FLACs to Apple Lossless. It is
possible to use Foobar and iTunesEncode to do this in a fairly
automated way (even picks up album art), but it takes DAYS of
processing time (approx 15 to 20 mins per transcoded CD on a 2.0Ghz
MacBook Pro running XP under Parallels).

It annoys me, but until Apple supports FLAC on both the Mac and iPod
I'll keep all three versions (heh, something to fill my 1TB Time

I connect my Transporter to a Bryston BP-25DA preamp via the balanced
XLR outputs (ie. I use the Transporter's DAC). I had always assumed

the way up to 100, until I saw this thread on the Bryston forum:

http://www.audiocircle.com/circles/index.php?topic=52263.0

Given that the absolute maximum input level of a Bryston preamp is
15Vrms bal input for 1% distortion at the 'to recorder' output is
there an optimal volume setting on the Transporter I should be using?

(I am, once again, at the limit of my electronics knowledge, so forgive

Thanks, a nice list.

I have become a big fan of the AAC Plus streams for classical music.
You'll need to install the mplayer plug-in (just follow the excellent
instructions in the wiki carefully). In general, I find that AAC Plus
streams sound better than MP3 streams that have even twice the
bitrate.

My favorite station is Radio Swiss Classic
(http://www.radioswissclassic.ch/). I find their 64kbps AAC Plus
stream to be of much higher quality than their 128kbps MP3 stream. I
also really like their programming.

KVOD in Colorado (http://www.kvod.org/) has a 48kbps AAC Plus stream
that is quite reasonable. They also have excellent programming.

There is another 64kbps classical stream from
http://www.playradiouk.com/

There is a site called www.tuner2.com that has a directory of AAC Plus
streams for all genres.

to System Preferences - Accounts- Login Items and hit the + at the
bottom of the list. Navigate to the volume you want to automount and
select 'Add'. (If there are any passwords involved you would need the
mount password to be added to your Keychain).

I tried this on Leopard (think it would work on Tiger, too) and found
that it was successfully mounted when I rebooted.

BTW, even this seems a bit awkward -- seems like a missing feature to
me.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Looking for a small balanced mono amplifier...

2007-12-03 Thread muski

I am thinking about getting a pair of Amphion Ion speakers for a
desktop/nearfield system. I would feed them from my Transporter via my
Headroom Max Balanced headphone amp, which, since it has balanced
outputs, can effectively act as a preamp. The Amphion Ions need
between 20-120 watts, but I guess probably 50W is probably plenty for
nearfield use. What I would really like is a pair of small, balanced
mono amps, no bigger than 6 square.

Does anyone know of anything like this?

Thanks,
muski

So, yes, I do think you'll find the MicroDAC better than the Macbook

Let me know your impressions once you get it. (BTW, the 2007 HeadRoom

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] MicroDac

2007-10-21 Thread muski

I have not heard the Micro series products from Headroom, but have owned
the Total BitHead, the Desktop Portable Amp w/DAC (from 2006), and the
Headroom Max Balanced Amp (my primary listening system). I have
listened to the above with Sennheiser 650HD and AKG701 headphones in
both normal and balanced configurations.

Overall, I am a huge fan of Headroom products and find them very
complementary to the Slimdevices products. In particular, the Max
Balanced Amp paired with the Transporter has been an acoustic epiphany
for me. I listen to so much more music now that I have this system.
Among the many things I like about this combo, the amount of detail
they reveal is staggering (sometimes to the level of distraction --
conductors turning the page on the score, instrument keypresses,
etc...).

The Desktop and the Total BitHead headphone amps are also very
enjoyable to listen to and are like all Headroom amps, excellent value
for the money.

However, I think that at their respective price points, the Slimdevices
DACs are simply better than the Headroom ones. At the lower end, I
found I preferred the stock SB3 DAC to the Desktop DAC (after a month I
only used the RCA connectors). And at the high-end, the Headroom Max
DAC is simply no match for the Transporter's DAC -- which is why I
ordered my Max Balanced amp without the DAC. (To be fair, I far prefer
the DAC in the Total BitHead to the DAC in my MacBook Pro).

Assuming that you are looking to use the Micro Amp with an SB3 as a
source, I would either get just the Amp and not the DAC, or, even
better, reallocate the money for the Micro DAC to the headphone amp and
get something like the new Ultra Micro or even the Desktop Amp. As I
have upgraded through the Headroom amplifier product line, I have never
been disappointed.

My understanding is that the NoCorrection filter does freq response
correction only (ie no phase correction). Also, I believe that the
TestConvolution files don't apply mic correction.

An earlier post mentioned that the REQW developers might add a feature
to apply a mic cal file to an imported Impulse Response (now it only
applies it to recordings done with REQW)

Inguz, chime in if I'm wrong on this.

DRC applies mic calibration to the filter, not the TestConvolution which

Thank you -- an explanation that makes sense! Now I understand why my
normal flat Test Convolutions look like my ECM calibration file. It's
consistent -- if my system room were (theoretically) perfectly flat,
the resulting uncalibrated response would look identical to the freq
response curve of the mic.

I also confirmed this in the real world. Using a sweep recorded by a
calibrated ECM8000 mic, I created a filter using normal.drc with a flat
target and my ECM8000's custom calibration file (not the standard one in
DRC).

I then used an Earthworks M30 to record a Sweep (with EQ in L
channel) test tone with the ECM8000_normal_flat filter in use. I
processed this and looked at the Impulse_Response_Measured graph.
(Although the Impulse_Response_Measured file is not corrected with the
M30's mic calibration file, the M30 is flat enough without correction
for this test). Anyway, although the resulting freq response is far
from perfect, it is moves around a flat-ish line, and does not have the
big +10db hump at 10k that is characteristic of my ECM's calibration
file.

(The graphs are in post #11, here:
http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=38758page=2)

muski

BTW, a little drc trick. Tired of constantly having to use Audacity to
convert my xxx_Test_Convolution files from 32 bit float to 16 bit
integer to graph them in REQW, I discovered that if you change the last
line of the .drc files line to TCOutFileType = I (instead of F), it
creates 16 bit integer files...

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Earthworks M30 vs ECM 8000 side-by-side test for Inguz DRC

2007-09-28 Thread muski

I took measurements today with both of the mics, using a Sound Devices
USBPre audio interface. Very interesting results!

The first chart shows the freq response of the left channel
measurements (Due to differing sensitivities the sweeps were at
slightly different levels. So I shifted the ECM8000 up about 4db for
the sake of comparison).

The second shows the phase response (built with the drc Octave
scripts).

The third shows the normal filters computed with a flat target curve
and each of the mic's calibration files (unshifted traces). The
ECM8000 filter looks a lot like the mic cal file profile. (I am still
suspicious/baffled about drc's use of mic cal files).

The fourth chart shows the frequency response of the two mics -- ie a
plot the calibration files. I had the ECM8000 calibrated by a third
party and Earthworks provides a calibration file for all their mics for
an extra $50.

It's interesting to see that the ECM8000 does mostly OK in the lower
freq, but not so well above 1KHz.

Only had time to get these measurements done and have yet to do a
listening test. One day I'll try same test with an Radio Shack SPL and
also compare the Tascam US-122L to the Sound Devices USB Pre.

 muski, oh ok.

While adjusting the curve to your new comparison I was wondering are
those dBs on the phase response actually degrees or it's more like
 divided somehow

No, it's degrees (-180-0-180). (BTW, I have no phase information in
either of my mic cal files). It seems like these phase response plots
vary a lot depending on the amount of smoothing done. I'll have a look
at the other Octave phase plots.

From the DRC documentation, it's not clear how much benefit there is to
modifying the phase information. Also, it looks like you need to modify
the .drc files to make sure all the MC flags are set correctly.

From http://drc-fir.sourceforge.net/doc/drc.html:

Starting from version 2.0.0 DRC lets you specify the phase for the
target post filter stage. Phase specification should be placed after
the amplitude specification and should be expressed in degrees.
 Following the example above:
 0 -40 0
 18 -20 45
 20 0 90
 2 0 180
 21000 -40 90
 22050 -100 0
If not specified a value of 0 is assumed. Setting a phase different
than 0, i.e. flat, is useless within normal HiFi systems in almost all
circumstances. Furthermore the phase specification is used only if the
PSFilterType is L, else any phase specification is wiped out by the
 minimum phase filter extraction.

Looking forward to doing some listening tests tonight!

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Earthworks M30 vs ECM 8000 side-by-side test for Inguz DRC

2007-09-28 Thread muski

I used the Sweep (with EQ in L channel) test tone and, using the M30
microphone recorded sweeps for both the M30_normal_flat and
ECM8000_normal_flat filters. Below are the plots of
Impulse_Response_Measured and phase response (1/6 octave smoothing).

Since the M30 is pretty close to flat even (see the first post), the
fact that these are not mic cal adjusted shouldn't make much
difference.

It is interesting that the ECM8000 plot, though not without some
issues, does looks flat-ish (ie at least it doesn't have the huge hump
like the ECM8000's mic freq reponse plot). This suggests that the mic
cal files are correctly processed in drc?

I am surprised by the phase behavior of both filters in the low freqs.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Earthworks M30 vs ECM 8000 side-by-side test for Inguz DRC

2007-09-28 Thread muski

Sorry what do you mean by that, didn't you say that the mic cal files
 weren't applied?

The mic cal files were indeed applied to create the two filters. The
M30 mic cal file was not applied to the measured results shown above,
but as the M30 is reasonably flat it shouldn't make much difference.

So, in summary, the mic cal files were applied to create the filters,
but not to measure their effect.

ecm8000 calibrated, but I was afraid to ask because I thought it was a
dumb question...

I have a text file for my calibrated ECM8000 which graphs as shown
below (green is the stock drc ecm8000.txt file).

A sample from the calibration file looks like this:

9055.480469 6.765000 0
9098.602539 1.691000 0
9141.723633 7.219000 0

9529.815430 10.788000 0
9572.937500 10.126000 0

So I need to go through and negate all the values in the second column?

No wonder I've been using 'soft' and flatness to bring down some of the
brightness I've been hearing. Hey, at least it's phase-corrected
brightness...

Will re-run my filters and see what I get.

Inguz, thanks for the experiment!

Yes, I was already planning on doing this. I even want to see how the
two mics perform against using a Radio Shack SPL straight into my
MacBook (the first thing I ever tried). Time family permitting, I
also want to test the two audio interfaces against each other with the
M30.

I have a mic stand, so I can keep the mics in the same place. I think
the trickiest part will be to get them all to record at the same
level.

I know I can use the Octave scripts to generate the graphs of the
frequency and phase response measurements before mic calibration files
are applied.

But, I am trying to figure out how to graph the freq response with the
mic calibration file applied. I'm pretty sure that
Impulse_Repsonse_Measured.wav doesn't apply the mic cal file -- only
the Test_Convolutions of the resulting filters do. I tried using the
settings in REQW to add in a mic cal file, but it looks like it only
applies it to sweeps recorded in REQW, not imported Impulse
Measurements.

Anyone have an idea of an easy way to do this? (I have Audacity, REQW,
DRC + Octave, but could download something else.)

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] DRC/Inguz and Microphone Calibration

2007-09-23 Thread muski

Glad that seeing my calibration file was helpful. There are some others
around that show a similar response curve, though none seem to be as bad
as mine (out by more than 9db).

Gotta admit a professionally calibrated mic would come in handy, who
knows what else dwells on these recordings.

I have exactly the same feeling. After using Inguz for a few months, I
have more and more faith in DRC and less and less in my recording gear.
I just have this feeling that my ECM8000/Tascam122L aren't up to the
task. My suspicion is that virtually any mic can record well enough to
do the phase correction, but that you need something professional to get
good frequency response correction (even a Radio Shack SPL). So, I have
an Earthworks M30 microphone and a Sounds Devices USB Pre audio
interface coming this week. The M30 is supposed to be +/- 0.5 db, and
for another $50 you can call Earthworks with the mic's serial number
and get them to email a custom mic cal file.

I'll remeasure and post my results here when I have a chance.

If I don't get anywhere with my M30, I'll try your mods to the mic cal
file!

I think you would be fine either way. As I mentioned, I tested the

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] itunes v SB3

2007-09-13 Thread muski

Another option is using an Airport Express ($99).

For Apple lossless:
itunes - Apple lossless – G5 - wirelessly via AirTunes to an AirPort
Express-- optical out to DAC (thinking about the Stello DA220 Mk2). DAC
to amp.

For FLAC:
VLC- FLAC - G5 - wirelessly via Rogue Ameoba Airfoil to an AirPort
Express-- optical out to DAC (thinking about the Stello DA220 Mk2). DAC
to amp.

(VLC is a Mac shareware media player. Airfoil is the equivalent of
AirTunes but allows you to capture the audio out from any
application).

You also need a special optical cable (mini-Toslink to Toslink). I
once tested this setup by playing DTS files wirelessly from my Mac to
the AirPort connected to a surround processor. They decoded fine,
indicating that this is a bit-perfect solution (volume at 100% and all
the equalizer, etc. off).

I used the above setup until I got my first SB2. Audio quality debates
aside, I like having a display next to my preamp, and the flexibility of
having both a remote and a web interface if I am at my computer. I have
my collection entirely in FLAC.

Just to fan the flames more, what about getting a Transporter instead
of the Stello DAC? The Transporter has a wonderful DAC -- as good or
better than the one in my Bryston 25DA preamp. (The Transporter also
has a 30 day return period -- maybe worth trying?)

Headroom makes nice headphone amps. Some with separate DACs:

See:http://www.headphone.com/products/headphone-amps/the-micro-line/

and some with built-in ones:

http://www.headphone.com/products/headphone-amps/the-desktop-line/2007-headroom-portable-desktop-amp.php

Another option is to get one without a DAC, but to use it as a
combination headphone amp/preamp -- you could plug your RS-1s and your
AE5's into it:

http://www.headphone.com/products/headphone-amps/the-desktop-line/headroom-desktop-amp.php

(there is even a switch on the front to turn the rear output on/off.)

Warning: not exactly inexpensive... (30 day money back guarantee,
though)

As there is a Mono implementation for Debian, it might be theoretically

enough.

Even on a 1.8Ghz iMac G5, I can barely keep Inguz running, as it
consumes 75% of the CPU. My MacBook Pro 2.0ghz Intel Core Duo can
handle the processing load easily, and it only uses about 25% of one
CPU. (Seems that the efficiency of the Mono implementation varies from
platform to platform).

If you have a fast PC somewhere and want to experiment, you can install
a new instance of Slimerserver and Inguz on the PC and then mount your
music directory from your ReadyNAS box on the PC as a network drive
(saves having to copy all the music files over). I found that loading
the music files over the network is plenty fast enough. Don't forget

It may not be a perfect long-term solution, but it will give you a

Good point. I was only able to get a bit-perfect stream from

On the jitter front, turns out that you can you slave this M-Audio card

between those setups...

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] s/pdf SB better than s/pdf soundcard pc?

2007-07-16 Thread muski

Another issue is what the software player and PC sound apps drivers
might be doing to the playback stream along the way. It's been a while
since I played with Softsqueeze, but when I tried it a few years ago I
was not getting bit-perfect playback (tested by playing a 5.1 DTS file
into a surround receiver -- it couldn't decode it). This was nothing
to do with Softsqueeze (a great product), but the Java sound libraries
and the Windows kmixer.

Anyway, you may want to check if this has been addressed in recent
versions of Softsqueeze. Also have read up on ASIO drivers and try
playing with foobar2000 and winamp playback which can use these
drivers. The DTS decode check is always a reassuring test make sure no
bits are being mangled in the playback process.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] DRC/Inguz and Microphone Calibration

2007-07-15 Thread muski

vdorta;214539 Wrote:
Wouldn't this suggest the calibration is wrong?

No, I think it was 'operator error' on my part -- I don't think that I
generated my first set of filters correctly. I have since regenerated
everything, and am not hearing the clipping I noticed the first time
with the normal filter. The sounds is a little brighter, but that may
simply be that I was so accustomed to the old ones. I should do some
more side-by-side listening to the calibrated and uncalibrated
filters.

Turns out that when I plot the 'normal' and 'soft' filters there is
almost no difference between the two in terms of freq response
correction. My understanding is that the difference between 'soft' and
'normal' has more to do with the degree of phase correction. I also
just read that the 'No Correction' filter just does freq filtering,
with no phase correction, so I will try listening to that, too.

I guess it's also possible that you might have a better instance of an
ECM 8000 than mine. As I said before, I would be interested to try the
same exercise with a calibrated Earthworks mic.

BTW, are you using the 'normal.drc' from the Inguz site or the one
included with DRC?

Muski

P.S. Just curious -- you say 'what I would expect'. Is that based on
published measurements of your equipment or something else?

Yes, it was included with the service. I think most calibrators do

Calibration files are available for every Earthworks measurement
microphone at an extra charge. These files can be used to import the
microphone’s amplitude frequency response directly into your
measurement system. They are in text format, with frequency in Hz in

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] DRC/Inguz and Microphone Calibration

2007-07-10 Thread muski

I recently had my Behringer ECM8000 microphone calibrated by
Cross-Spectrum Labs with some interesting results (cost $50,
http://www.cross-spectrum.com/measurement/mike_meas.html). A very
different calibration file was the result. See the attached graph --
green is the stock ecm8000.txt file that comes with DRC, red is the
calibration file for my ECM8000 with a Tascam US-122L preamp/USB
interface. The calibrator's experience with about a dozen ECM8000s is
that though they show pretty good response (esp for the price), but
they are all over the place.

Haven't done a ton of listening with this, but immediately had to
switch from 'normal' to 'soft' -- it was just too bright and there was
some occasional weird digital distortion (maybe it was clipping).
Further experimentation with different target curves now required.

Curious if others have had their mics calibrated and if the results
were as surprising.

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Anyone with a Bryston amp/dac and SB/Transporter - How does the Bryston dac sound ?

2007-05-07 Thread muski

I have been using SB2/3 with Bryston BP25DA (preamp with built-in DAC)
for a couple of years now and find it a wonderful combination. (Feeding
a Bryston 4B-SST-Watt Puppy 7s)

I also recently purchased a Transporter as a source for a new balanced
headphone rig. Inspired by your post, I decided to do some long
overdue side-by-side listening of the Transporter DAC vs the
SB3/Bryston DAC.

To my ears the two sound very similar -- both wonderful, both natural
with plenty of detail. I listened to everything from Beethoven Piano
Trios to some hip-hop, and the only difference I could hear was a
slightly wider soundstage coming from the Transporter -- and even that
was subtle.

Because my room acoustics are not great at the moment I did my
listening with my headphone rig (a Headroom Max Balanced Amp balanced
AKG701s).

Don't think you can go far wrong either way...

I remember them from a few years ago but had totally forgotten about

The Psile cases from Nexus are nice, but they have case fans. Then
there are these Zalman heatsink cases, but they are expensive and huge.
So maybe Hush is the answer. I'll have a look. Thanks for the idea.

I wonder how long until we see 300GB solid state drives?

Re: [SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Transporter listening test

2007-05-07 Thread muski

Very interesting test...

I have been listening side-by-side to a Transporter (XLR out) vs an
SB3-digital coax-Bryston BP25DA (DAC). I was listening to a variety
of FLAC files of EAC ripped CDs. Through a balanced headphone rig, the
only difference I could hear a slightly wider soundstage (n.b., I hadn't
read this thread at this point), and maybe the Tranporter was slightly
brighter.

When I switched over to my speaker rig (4B-SST-Watt Puppy 7s) I really
couldn't hear much difference at all. This is probably because my
listening room is an acoustic disaster (concrete floors, lots of glass,
etc).

Then I switced on the Inguz filter and all of the sudden the
differences between the two systems became surprisingly audible again,
more so than through my headphone rig. (Soundstage width in
particular). Made me want to make the Transporter a permanent fixture
in my speaker rig.

Obviously, if the room correction is working, the most likely
explanation is that I was hearing the sources more 'truly'.

I had another thought, though. If I read things correctly, when I
listen to my FLAC-encoded CD files without Inguz at fixed digital
volume out, the DACs would be working at 16-bit, whereas with the Inguz
plugin, everything comes out at 24-bit (think this is right). Does
anyone have a data on whether DACs perform significantly differently at
different bit-depths (SNR, jitter)? Could it have anything to do with
up-sampling (Bryston DAC) vs not (Transporter)?

(BTW, I realized a fairer test would have been Transporter XLR out vs
Transporter digital coax into the Bryston DAC).

Also, do you require any other plugins? CLI interface, etc.

Lastly, does the displayed data rate (in the track info) change to show

For Acourate, I don't know, but I assume you'll be able to use one or
 other of these two formats.

Thanks -- this worked. I was able to take measurements in Audacity
using my old Radio Shack analog SPL hooked directly to the line in of
my MacBook Pro (running Bootcamp/XP). No mic, no preamp, no external
USB audio card.

It's hard to assess the measurement quality of the RS SPL, but all I
can say is that using the 'normal' correction, I am very pleased with
the results. My system definitely sounds better -- tighter imaging,
wider soundstage and better mid-bass response. That said, the
improvement was noticeable but not wildly dramatic, probably a good
sign that nothing funky was going on.

So it seems there is a much lower barrier to entry to getting inguz up
and running. (It would be interesting for someone with both an RS SPL
and a high-end mic/preamp/external soundcard system to run a comparison
test.)

A couple of notes:

1) By changing the db sensitivity of the SPL (eg. 70, 80, 90 db) I was
able to the get the mic line-in at the same input volume. (sort of
equivalent to a vol adjust on a mic preamp).

2) There was some audible background noise in the recordings, but it
didn't seem to hurt anything.

3) I was running my SB3 through my DAC/preamp. In terms of measuring
left/right, I just disconnected the unused channel from the amp. I
assume that this ok, and that the sweep tone is identical for both
channels.

4) I used DRC. I edited all of the .drc files to point to the
RSSPL.txt mic calibration file above. (I have a question about this
file which I'll post in another response)

If you'd like to see any of the the measurement or cal files, let me
know and I'll post them.

Thanks! Quite a revolutionary piece of software.

I noticed that the RSSPL.txt calibration file seems to start at 515Hz
and go up from there. Elsewhere, I found a calibration file for a RS

However, it only has two values per line, not three. It looks like
this:
7.00-37.33
8.00-34.87
9.00-32.76
10.00 -30.35
11.00 -27.61
12.00 -24.71
13.00 -22.21

Is there any way to prepend this data to your RSSPL.txt file to allow
for correction of lower frequencies? I have attached the entire file.

signficant improvement in imaging over the high-end unbalanced
headphone system I had before (both with Transporter as source). I
have yet to find a headphone amp with a built-in DAC that sounds better
than the Transporter.

I, too, prefer having analog volume control in the headphone pre/amp
(and in my Bryston preamp, for that matter). I have never really tried
doing a digital/analog vol control listening test, but it always seemed
counter-intuitive to me to spend all the time and effort getting
bit-perfect rips in EAC only to then start modifying those same bits
for volume control in the digital stage...

So far, I only have my AKG 701s wired for balanced use. I have read
good things about Sennheiser HD650s in balanced mode, and am thinking
about getting a set of balanced cables for my pair. I don't have a
pair of Grados yet. I noticed that Moon Audio (www.moon-audio.com)
sells the GS1000, RS1 RS2 cabled for balanced usage. I'm very
curious about the GS1000.

Have a look at the 'Associated Equipment' sidebar of the Transporter
review in the Feb 2006 of Stereophile and you'll see listed Ayre Myrtle
Wood blocks. (oh, Myrtle wood, not ebony.)

Given the article's bizarre opening metaphor, I was expecting polished

In the kitchen in my last house I had a pair of Canton Plus MX
satellites ($200) and the AS22C sub ($499). There is a matching
Cantomount wall brackets ($50). Sounded great in a difficult space.
Discrete and nice looking, too.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Really though, am i getting the best out of this Ripping

2007-01-26 Thread muski

Model Citizen --

I rip FLACs with EAC in secure mode + accurate rip. However, you also
mentioned .cue files in passing. I have a vague idea of what they are,
but had a few questions that maybe you could help me with.
1) I understand their value if you want to burn an identical CD at some
later date (using EAC, eg), but what does the Slimserver software do
with .cue sheets that is superior to just the plain old FLACs?
2) Where do you store .cue files -- all in one directory, or do you put
each one in the directory with the FLAC files?
3) What's the best/most automated way to get EAC to create them?

Thanks,
muski
(apologies if I should be asking in another forum...)

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Need to brighten sound of new SB3 -- Transporter or DAC?

2007-01-15 Thread muski

First, I totally agree that the analog stage of the SB3 currently is
not at a hey, buddies, listen to this... level. But, through a good
DAC it's close.

I wonder if you might be giving up too easily on the Transporter. I've
had mine for a month now, and the more I listen to it, the more I like
it (esp. for its upper end). I wouldn't call it super 'bright', but I
would say it is has a medium-brightness and accuracy that doesn't tire
me out (I listen to mostly classical music).

Alas, my big system is in storage (BP25DA, 4BSST WP7s), so I can't
yet offer you a side-by-side comparison of the Byrston vs Transporter
DACs. However, through my Headroom Max Desktop DAC/amp and AKG701s
(albeit, an imperfect comparison), I can tell you that I really, really
enjoy listening to the Transporter DAC, certainly as much as I enjoyed
listening to the Bryston DAC.

Before my Transporter arrived, my opinion of Slimdevices (from owning
an SB2 SB3) was Wow, those guys really understand how to put
together a digital transport. After a month of TP listening, I now
feel that they also know a thing or two about how to build a great DAC.
It is at the hey-buddies-listen-to-this-level. I recently realized
that regardless of how great a digital transport it is, the
Transporter's DAC is worthy of being evaluated against the best of the
standalone ones.

If you can get a 30 day trial on it, I'd give it a chance. If it
doesn't work for you, return it and you'll be one month closer to the
release of the Bryston DAC...

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Lossless Downloads

2007-01-14 Thread muski

If you like classical music, the Philadelphia Orchestra has an online
music store that sells recordings of their live concerts in MP3 FLAC
format (yes, lossless downloads!). I have downloaded a few things, and
it all works well and sounds great. Very progressive -- I wish more
orchestras would do this.

See: http://www.thephiladelphiaorchestra.com/

(The Philadephia Orchestra has always been out in front: it was the
first symphonic orchestra to make electrical recordings (1925), the
first to perform its own commercially sponsored radio broadcast (1929),
the first to perform on the soundtrack of a feature film (Paramount’s
The Big Broadcast of 1937), the first to appear on a national
television broadcast (1948), the first American orchestra to record the
complete Beethoven symphonies on compact disc (1988), and the first
major orchestra to give a live cybercast on the internet (1997).)

Turns out that they partnered with a site called www.nugs.net, which
makes most of its money selling downloads of live rock concerts of
bands like the Dave Matthews Band, Metallica, Phish, the Grateful Dead,
Barenaked Ladies, Gov’t Mule, Widespread Panic and the String Cheese
Incident. (Presumably, also in lossless formats?)

So, from Beethoven to Barenaked Ladies...

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Need to brighten sound of new SB3 -- Transporter or DAC?

2007-01-14 Thread muski

What about a Byrston DAC? There are two options. The first is the
integrated BP26DA (I have the BP25DA, which I like very much). The
second is that Bryston has announced that they will be selling a
separate DAC this spring (to complement the CD transport they showed at
CES last week).

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: Headphone amp for Transporter XLR connector ?

2007-01-07 Thread muski

I recently purchased the Serious Audiophile Package from HeadRoom,
which, for $2000, includes their 'Max'ed out' Desktop Amp, Desktop
Power Supply and a pair of the recently introduced AKG 701s. It is
connected to my Transporter and sounds absolutely wonderful. Because
this headphone amp also has its own excellent oversampling DAC, I can
connect it to both the Transporter's digital and RCA analog outputs,
and flip between them when I feel like doing some critical listening.
(A very, very close call, but I'd give the nod to the Transporter DAC
for a smoother, less grainy high-end. I do much prefer the Headroom
Max DAC to the SB3 DAC, though)

The AKG 701s are a huge improvement over my Sennheiser HD 650s. I was
surprised at how audible the difference was.

Note that this is not a balanced amp, and so cannot be connected to the
Transporter's XLR balanced outputs. Headroom does make some balanced
amps, but they are even pricier. Also, if you do buy a balanced
headphone amp, you will need to recable your HD 600s.

[SlimDevices: Audiophiles] Re: SB-3 and external DAC

2006-03-31 Thread muski

PS. In reference to the original topic of this thread, I much prefer the
DAC in my Bryston BP25DA (now BP26DA) over just the SB2 DAC.

For headphone listening, I've been going back and forth between the SB3
DAC and the Headroom Desktop DAC, but in the end decided in favor of the
SB3. (The Headroom Desktop Portable Amp itself is great, and its
crossfeed circuit is a winner.)
