Hi,

I have a setup where I am connecting a FXO to pabx at site A and E&M to site
B, I have this problem where I can call from FXO to E&M but unable to call
from
E&M to FXO.

I am using E&M type 5 , 4-wire , signal immediate as for the FXO I did not
configure anything, I am not sure waht needs to be configured.

What do you think is the problem ?

2000-06-29 Thread Shahir Boshra

First, what's the purpose of connecting an FXO to an E&M? is it something
that conventional E&M to E&M can't achieve? Or is it because one of your
PBX's doesn't support E&M? If this is the case, FXO & FXS pairs would do the
job, specially with PLAR.
I honestly don't believe FXO and E&M is a working combination or at least
never heard about it, I would be glad to learn otherwise.
One more thing, what do you mean by "did not configure anything"? Did you
configure any dial-peers? does your E&M "know" when to send traffic to the
FXO router?

I sent this reply some days ago, but never found its way to the group.

Well, apparently this is a punctuation error, they were comparing
"encapsulated SNA priority" with "e-mail priority".
I really hope there is no such thing as anything over e-mail, other than
viruses anyways.

Re: Nortel/Bay ATM woes...

2000-06-29 Thread Nigel Taylor

Hey Mike,
You were right on! Apparently the call was going out but
never received. So the local les/bus pair showed the remote les/bus pair as
"partially operational" Once we got the addresses right the problem was
history. There was also mention of a IISP route as well as the PNNI routes.
I did some reading and found that the IISP routes are more like UNI routes
and do no dynamic routing, whereas you PNNI routes do. My question is why
in the topology would one place a IISP route and not let PNNI do it all
dynamically?

Please let me know if I'm totally lost I'm doing allot of reading on
the subject at the moment..trying to get a few things cleared up in my
head(web closet)

TIA

Re: Calculate Bandwidth

2000-06-29 Thread Cormac Long

Folks,

One very important point to note when calculating
bandwidth utilization on a serial interface. The
default BW on Cisco serial i/f's is 1.544M (i.e. a
T1). In this case it seems to happily coincide with
the CIR. However in many cases the CIR or leased line
speed is less than this.
Management packages will gauge utilization against the
T-1 value. For example a 56k linked could be almost
maxed out in real terms but the management station
would see it running at 56/T-1 which is less than 5%.
You should change the BW to the real physical speed
where possible using the interface 'bandwidth' command
-values are in kbps.
Note that the bandwidth parameter also influences
routing metric values for IGRP/EIGRP/OSPF.

Re: ospf reconvergence issue .

2000-06-29 Thread Cormac Long

When a link changes state within an OPSF area. LSA's
propogate throughout the area immediately afterwards.
Assuming no fundamental design or configuration
problems there should be no problems on anything other
than the affected link.
If routers with static routes are generating LSAs then
they must clearly be runnign OSPF also. The cascading
or receipt of an LSA will not generate an entry in the
router's log unless the link that changed state was
directly attached. The only other way there would be
an entry in the log is if OSPF event debugging was
enabled (NOT advisable unless absolutely necessary for
troubleshooting).
It's not clear from your e-mail if there is a real
connectivity problem or not. If there's not then the
only issue is the potentially excessive SNMP messages.
The scope of these messages can be reduced by
modifying the Spectrum and Remedy configurations. The
manuals will detail how to do this.

Off the top of my head I think it is the - session-timeout - command that
you can set on the line configuration. I seem to remember an exec-timeout
also, but can't remember which does what. You should be able to look up
those commands on Cisco's web page though.

Off the top of my head I think it is the - session-timeout - command that
you can set on the line configuration. I seem to remember an exec-timeout
also, but can't remember which does what. You should be able to look up
those commands on Cisco's web page though.

Re: Can you block CDP with an access list???

2000-06-29 Thread Wolf-Gero Krause

There are a better pssibilities than an access-list. You can disable CDP per
Port. Look at the command syntax:

cdp enable
To enable Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) on an interface, use the cdp enable
interface configuration command. Use the no form of this command to disable
CDP on an interface.

cdp enable
no cdp enable

cdp run
To enable CDP, use the cdp run global configuration command. Use the no form
of this command to disable CDP.

cdp run
no cdp run

best wishes

RE: slowness in network ?? how to cure?? help!!

2000-06-29 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

- Is this one user connected by one cable directly to the switch?, or
- Is this several users connected to a hub that is connected to the switch?
- If more than one user share the same connection to the switch, how many?
- Are you running 10BaseT or 100BaseTX?
- Are you using CAT5 (or better) cables?
- Are the cable you mention lying on top of light fixtures or other
electronic equipment?
- Is the server they are accessing conencted directly to the switch or via a
hub?
- Is your server fast enough to live up to the demands (cpu, memory, etc.)?

and so on, and so on.

A good way to solve a problem like this is to draw your network on a
whiteboard (or somewhere else) and then eliminate one thing at a time so you
end up with your bottleneck/problem.

I do not know what kind of switch you have, but start by looking for
utilization on the port the cable is connected to. If it's up around 70% or
more, then that is probably your problem right there.

Hi.. Dear Friends,

I have a two question to ask

1)If the users complained that they are facing slowness to access a
particular server? and I traced the LAN cable of the server and it is
connected to one port of the switches. then we telnet to the switches to
take a look ? But what we support to look into?? and what can we do to
cure the slowness.

RE: Backup tool

for back up, use a tftp server - any download site has one for free.
for managing, configure snmp in the routers/switches and find "Router IP
Console" in www.innerdive.com, it's trial for 30 days. I think it's good
when working with snmp.

Or, if you want spend money, buy the CiscoWorks 2000, hehe.

good luck,

Leonardo.

BSCN focuses on:
Scalable routing protocols:
OSPF (new - OSPF over FR)
EIGRP (new - Query Scoping, EIGRP over FR)
BGP (all new, two chapters)
Route Redistribution (similar to ACRC)
Policy Routing and Route-Map (all new)
Lots of lab time (12 new labs)

Gone from ACRC are:
Access list (IP and IPX ACL covered in ICND)
Queuing (covered in BCRAN)
ISDN and DDR (covered in ICND and BCRAN)
Bridging

Be aware - be VERY aware - that the BGP content of the new class is quite
significant and substantially weightier than the old ACRC class.

Just a quick plug - IBM Canada is offering BSCN at the end of August. See

Subject: slowness in network ?? how to cure?? help!!

Hi.. Dear Friends,

I have a two question to ask

1)If the users complained that they are facing slowness to access a
particular server? and I traced the LAN cable of the server and it is
connected to one port of the switches. then we telnet to the switches to
take a look ? But what we support to look into?? and what can we do to
cure the slowness.

Re: Nortel/Bay ATM woes...

2000-06-29 Thread Mike Smith

Nigel,

Q-
"Why in the topology would one place a IISP route and not let PNNI do it all
dynamically?"

A-
You could have two groups of switches, where one group runs a level of code
that dosen't support PNNI, or is just not upgraded to PNNIyet.

Mike

PS. Your right on target.

Cisco rollover cable and DB 9 adapter??

2000-06-29 Thread Palikhey, Niraj

Hi,
Had a question on the DB-9 adapter that Cisco uses and a regular DB-9
adapter. They are different in the way the pins are used but both of them
work with the rollover cable when connecting a router via the console port
and hyperterminal. So the question is if both the adapters are different why
do both of them work?? So the adapter does not matter, right? Just the cable
has to be a rollover ie. 1 to 8, 2 to 7 etc.
Please advise.
Thank you.
Kind regards,

There is no such command "speed 200" - you can get
200Mb if you specify

full-duplex
speed 100

assuming your hub/switch supports 100 full-duplex

RE: what are the problems?

2000-06-29 Thread Rahman, Abdul

Check the card in the box itself. Check the actual MIB
data that is recorded in the trap. Distinguish between
interface down, node down, etc. If you have set the environment
to send to snmp station then you may be able to see other things.

good luck.

we can check except the leased line, the cabling connection, power? What
else can be the cause?

I agree with you Cindy, if a person knows the material regardless of his/her

opportunities for all who have an interest in it. I find it troubling that

Well, I come from a UNIX background, and ordered two solaris 8 intel beta's
by accident. These are freely liscensed to non profit people like us, i
could give the cds to you (actually it's a binder with solaris 8 beta intel,
sparc, and staroffice for both platforms, plus install floppies) for about
$20 plus shipping. Or you can order Solaris 8 academic from sun, it costs
about $30 (media cost, the os is free, as long as you're a student/non
profit org). Gather up an old pentium, and install it. Get the book Unix
Systems Administration Handbook by Nemeth, soft cover red book. This is the
UNIX BIBLE! This plus the actual Solaris OS in front of you is a great
combination. Then just check sun's site for the certifications and figure
out what they want you to know.

Can you assign a subnet mask while using Cisco Secure

2000-06-29 Thread Donohue, Steve

I am using Cisco Secure to authenticate dial-in users. I would like to be
able to assign these users IP addresses from their respective VLANs. I have
set up IP address pools in my Cisco Secure. Cisco Secure applies a classful
subnet mask so I can't make them appear to be on various vlans. Is it
possible to change this configuration, if not what would be the best way to
handle such a situation?

I appreciate your assistence in this matter.

MSFC in Catalyst 6509

2000-06-29 Thread Zach Stewart

Have you got this to work with the wccp protocol? The protocol is used for
caching (instead of a using hitting the web site each time, the request goes
to the cache) transparent to the end users. It appears from the docs that a
real interface is required although on the MSFC you can only create...

interface vlan 1
ip address 172.16.1.1
ip wccp enable<--

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/software/ios111/ca111/wccp.pdf

Just wanted to know you guys opinion, thanks.

Re: BSCN vs. ACRC - BGP focus

2000-06-29 Thread Russ Brown

Let me just state that as an engineer now working on a BGP implementation, I
think that a better decision was made to focus on it as a routing protocol
and get rid of some of the overlap. Let's face it - with the exception of
static routes, BGP is the protocol that ties the I-net and many private
networks together. Time to start making it a focal point of Advanced Cisco
Routing.

Re: How far by self study?

2000-06-29 Thread Evgeny Babanin

I passed my CCNP and CCDP mostly on self-study (I attended only CID
course) in 5 weeks ( exam every Saturday ). As far as I saw it is
relatively easy to pass exams if you go to the courses - all you need is to
read training materials carefully - ALL exam questions ARE in these
materials.
I used CiscoPress books Todd lammle ExamNotes and CCO only (and hands-on
of course)

RE: OFF TOPIC - Questions on Tests And Shortstops

2000-06-29 Thread Rik Guyler

While you may be right, I have trained myself to take all the time I need.
Too many times I have been in a hurry and misread something and then
discovered the error the second read through. When I have ample time, I
like to take my time and make sure I have read everything carefully and
really understand what the question is asking. Sure, if I'm in a hurry, I
can't take the time to smell the roses, but I can't accurately answer any
question unless I understand exactly what the question is asking. We've all
taken tests that had questions that seemed really ambiguous and poorly
worded. After all, these tests not only test your knowledge of the content,
but how good you are at taking tests. I'm 11 for 11 (haven't failed one
yet, knock on wood) and going for number 12 next week. I have not run out
of time yet either, but I'm grateful for the generous time allowance.

Preach Brad, preach! Ain't it the truth though... You either know it, or you

don't. I have always felt that they give you plenty of time for the tests...

My 8 Novell tests, for CNA, and then CNE (back when the CNA exam did NOT
count toward CNE), never took more than 11 minutes. Passed them all first
try. Of course, those were adaptive tests, designed to finish quickly.

But I had the same experience with the MCSE exams... all but one took less
than half an hour to finish. Passed them all first try. The one that went
long was the NT 3.51 version of the TCP/IP test - anybody who's seen that
exam will remember it. Long and tedious, but passable. Too bad they really
watered it down for NT 4.0...

CCNA? 22 minutes (passed first try).
CCIE written? Took the beta in about 35 minutes (passed).

I am not saying all this to pat myself on the back - I am just an average
guy. Anybody could do it, if they just do two things:

1. Learn the material
2. Don't watch the clock

It's that simple... Well OK, item number one can be difficult at times![=`)

I'll crawl back under my rock now... still looking for a decent job in
Baltimore...

Bye for now.

Netflow switching caveats?

2000-06-29 Thread John Neiberger

I've never had a chance to play with netflow switching and I'd like to
enable it on a production 2611. Are there any caveats or cautions that I
should be aware of? I've searched CCO and didn't see any warnings regarding
this, but I'd hate to enable it and watch something very unexpected happen,
especially considering the size of the branch that this router services.
:-) I've been down that road before, and I didn't like the trip!

TIA,
John Neiberger, CCNA/CCDA

my 2 cents. Don't use HUBS in a corp environment, use switches.
I knwo it is expensive, but it is worth the change.

Last Chance : Help me and win a Cisco book (US members only - Sorry!)

2000-06-29 Thread Ole Drews Jensen

Last chance to enter my little contest and at the same time help me out with
some feedback.

Currently only five people have sent me valuable feedback, so they each have
20% of winning when I run my random-drawing-program tomorrow, Friday the
30th @ 3.00 PM Central Time, unless I receive more replies before then.

Your feedback is appreciated.

I am currently in the process of finding new long distance provider and data
carrier, and that has been more frustrating than I ever dreamed of. All
those sales people promise everything, but I need some feedback from some of
you computer guys that deals with this, to see if you are satisfied or not
with the service you pay for. If someone had asked me a year ago if I could
recommend MCI/WorldCom as a Frame Relay provider, I would have said NO NO
NO!!!

Unfortunately, this offer is only for those of you located in the US,
because that is where I am seeking this service. I appologize.

To show my appreciating for your feedback, I would like to draw one of you
(with relevant feedback) to win a price. The price is a Cisco book of your

Like to add a couple to your list.
Have you gone to this person's PC and is access to that particular server slow?
Have you check on other PC to see if access is faster?

True. Also, I failed to mention before that there are new case studies and
labs, and the labs constitute about half the course time. Each chapter has a
case study and most have at least one lab. There is no more IPX, AppleTalk
or DECnet either, nor are there any access-lists and there is more detail on
the way in which the routing protocols function, particularly E-IGRP and
BGP.

I got the following certs all by self study:

MCSE

All together that is almost 30 tests and no official courses, only books

If you want to use perl, there is an mrtg contribution called "whodo" by Tony
Farr which does what Sacha described below.   I can extract and send you the
relevant code, if it would be any use. A lot cheaper than Cisco Works &
probably a bit simpler than implementing Netflow, but you would have to do the
billing part yourself.

RE: Cisco VPN Software

Make sure you download the 1.2 version (the latest one). It's much more
refined than the previous one and seems to have taken care of many of the
issues that I used to have. My speed seemed to increased quite a bit with

happened to get lucky with the bandwidth to my office.

Has anyone had a chance to compare the Raptor Power VPN server/client with

RE: BSCN vs. ACRC - BGP focus

2000-06-29 Thread Francisco Muniz

How does the ROUTING exam focuses on BGP? Just the protocol, or the politics
and implementation issues for the internet as well? I've been lurking on the
NANOG and IETF lists and I see that there's a lot more to routing in the
internet than BGP.
I'm asking, too, because the BGP2 paper on certzone talks about these issues
as well.

Yeah, that's me. I don't really have a lab set up, but I can let you dial
into the router , then telnet in and look at a couple of things. Haven't
looked at it in a while, so I would have to check things out. Also, if you
have a suggestion for a lab, for example, I can try to set my pod up and
make it available via ISDN.

I live in northern California, if long distance is an issue. Contact me off
line if you are interested, and if you have something you want to try.

Chuck

p.s. offer still good for everyone - want to practice ISDN, I can let you
dial me. Contact me off line.

Re: Using off the shelf DRAM in cisco 3620

2000-06-29 Thread Vern Stitt

Hey Greg,

A standard EDO 8x32 60 ns is a 32MB SIMM.

A standard EDO 16MB 60ns SIMM would be 4x32.

32 bits / 8 bits per byte = 4 bytes per 32 bits.

Slightly off topic - x36 = 4 data bytes plus 4 parity bits

Re: passing scores

2000-06-29 Thread Vitaliy Pindyura

Hi Rajeev,

You will find some answers in the following table:

Test NoTest TitleNo. of Ouestions
Time (min)
640-503 Routing 2.0 (BSCN)61
75
640-504 Switching 2.0 (BCMSN) 64 75
640-505 Remote Access (BCRAN) 62 75
640-506 Support 2.0 (CIT)61
75

Regarding passing scores I just know that BCMSN has 699 points because I
passed it today. Scoring is based on a scale of 300 to 1000 points. Also I
had 105 min instead of 75 (I am from non-English speaking country).

Best regards,
Vitaliy Pindyura.

Re: real CCNA question that I have in exam

2000-06-29 Thread NoOneYouKnow

Please don't take this a a flame, but I think you need to buy a book and
read a little. These questions are so basic that I am surprised that you
even tried the test with this level of knowledge. The CCNA isn't rocket
science (having studied rocket science I can attest to this), but it should
not be taken lightly.

BTW, posting actual questions from you test is a violation of the
non-disclosure agreement you agreed to before you took the test. Unlike the
Microsoft cert folks, Cisco cert folks tend to actually take this agreement
seriously. In keeping with that, it is unlikely that you will get answers to
these questions, since answering any that may have been on the test would
likely also be a violation.

Re: Cisco VPN Software

2000-06-29 Thread Vern Stitt

Hey Daniel,

I haven't seen the Cisco VPN Client 1.2 version yet.

I do know that on a PIX, firmware 5.0.3 and below required version 1.0 and
firmware 5.1 and above required version 1.1.

I would advise sticking with 5.0.3 and 1.0 on a PIX just because of the PIX
firmware stability. I do agree that the 1.1 VPN Client was easier to setup
because the defaults were the settings I wanted. In 1.0 I had to adjust
almost everything.

Bliss: Syslog Server & Timstamps Mismatch

2000-06-29 Thread News Cisco

I'm running a complete NMS software bundle with CW2000, CW5.0, Resouce
Manager Essential, IPM & MRTG.
I have a few serious problems

1. Clock on all the routers, NT logging syslog server are synched, when i
make a change in routers configuration an snmp msg/trap is recorded at my NT
machine which has an offest of 5 hrs. I've checked the timezones, all the
clocks, i've even treid to push the routers clock back, but same problem,
any checkpoints that i've missed ?

2. I have a few sites which cannot be configured with SNMP since the end
device is not a router, how can i keep track of the link availibility ? I've
set an instance in my IPM, it pings that site every 150 sec, gives me a
graph/response time but i cant seem to log/view the link failures.

3. Using this bundle of EXPENSIVE SOFTWARE (which i mentioned above) & the
SYSLOG Server/traps , how can i generate a report which can be easily read
by the topguns:), they simply wanna know which link which was down
today/this week/this month & for how many hrs ??? I've tried formattiing the
SYSLOG server reports accessible thru my Resource Manager Essential but its
the crappiest report generated by any 19th century S/W,,

cany anyone help me out here ???

Re: Sample Question Question

2000-06-29 Thread joel.studtmann

None of the above.

With classful IP, it's an invalid subnet mask. The .128 indicates a subnet
mask of only one bit, giving you only two subnets (193.243.12.0, and
193.243.12.128). You always lose two subnets when using a subnet mask with
classful IP : the first .0 subnet would conflict with the address of the
network, (is 193.243.12.0 referring to the network or the subnet?), and the
.128 subnet would give a subnet address of all 1s (with only one bit,
there's just one 1), resulting in a broadcast, so it's also invalid.

Now, with classless IP, the answer is still (e) None of the above. It's a
valid IP and subnet mask, as long you've given the ip subnet zero command.
The subnet address would be 193.243.12.0 (which wasn't listed as an answer).
Broadcast for the subnet would be .127, leaving you the .1 - 126. for hosts.

My two bits,

RE: real CCNA question that I have in exam

2000-06-29 Thread Jean Stockton

I have not read the non-disclosure agreement and will most certainly abide
by it whenever I agree to. However, it is not in the best interest of
anyone on this list for you to flame them. Yes, you are flaming the
gentleman when you insinuate that the information required to pass this test
is not that difficult and also suggesting that he should not have taken the
exam if he does not know the answers to the questions he is referring too.
I hope that everyone who has taken the exams has gotten the maximum score.
If you personally did not, you are living in a glass house and throwing
stones.

It appears that english is not the first language of the individual
requesting assistance. Perhaps there is a translation issue here. Is
english the only language this exam is offered in? Obviously, additional
effort should be made at the test centers to explain in more detail what the
non-disclosure agreement means. I just do not think that if Poor Tong
understood the non-disclosure agreement thoroughly, he would have violated
in this type of public forum. Appears to be a serious communication break
down somewhere.

Poor Tong, if this is something you really want, please continue to read,
research and study.

MSFC Routing

2000-06-29 Thread Bartlett, DS1

I have two 6506's with MSFC PFC cards attached to the supervisors. I have
configured multiple VLAN's on the Switches and a corresponding Interface on
each MSFC. I also have HSRP running between the two 6500's. I have
assigned IGRP 1 with all the correct networks listed. I have turned on IP
routing. One of the VLAN's is called Server Farm, to which the obvious
occurs, I have attached servers. I have trunking turned on to the 2924
switch (running Enterprise Code) from each 6500. I have also pruned all
VLAN's except the Server Farm VLAN from the Trunk.

Problem: I cannot ping from a switch to the server.

This is a pre-production setup and though it is time critical, I am not down
hard because of it. If someone has great and wonderful suggestions I would
greatly appreciate them.

Thank You,
Daryn P. Bartlett

RE: real CCNA question that I have in exam

2000-06-29 Thread Taylor, Don

I have to disagree here. I read the original post and the follow-up and
can't consider it a flame. The questions listed are basic enough that the
test taker should be able to answer all of them, and if s/he's not able to,
more study is required. Your point is taken about English possibly being a
stumbling block concerning the NDA, and Cisco should probably address that.

It's too bad Poor Tong didn't pass, but recommending that he study until he
can approach each of the certification objectives is hardly a flame.

RE: OFF TOPIC - Questions on Tests And Shortstops

2000-06-29 Thread jenny . mcleod

I agree. If I know I've got an hour, why not read the question twice, to make
sure it's asking what I first thought? Especially considering the phrasing of
some of the Cisco exams. No extra points for finishing in 15 minutes instead of
30... I personally prefer the exams where you can go back and review - that way
I can do a first run without double checking, and then go back and check the
questions at leisure. If I know I can't go back, I make myself reread the
question and answers a couple of times to make sure I'm reading it correctly.
I've never run out of time yet (although the Design beta was pushing it), but
I've certainly never finished in 20 minutes.
Probably a habit learned at school - for some of my school exams, you weren't
allowed to leave early - so you may as well use the time for something, and the
only real options are checking your work or doodling in the margins of the test
paper...
In real life, I'd prefer to work with somebody who checks their work and
considers alternatives, rather than racing through it as quickly as possible.
Unless, of course, it's a crisis situation, in which case I'm quite happy to
skip all the niceties and clean up the mess later!

Sourcing Router RAM Cheap [was Re: Using off the shelf DRAMin cisco 3620]

2000-06-29 Thread John Dill

In my opinion, the place to get RAM for current routers is:

www.crucial.com (A Micron Company)

For example, just bought a 16MB SIMM for my 1750.

Cisco price: $1000
Kingston: $375
Crucial: $27

Also picked up one for my 2600, which ships with a 16MB and a 8MB DIMM. Guess who
made the 16MB DIMM that shipped with the router? Micron (aka, Crucial). The two 16MB
DIMMs looked like peas in a pod next to each other.

Hope this helps,

- John

Hey Greg,

A standard EDO 8x32 60 ns is a 32MB SIMM.

A standard EDO 16MB 60ns SIMM would be 4x32.

32 bits / 8 bits per byte = 4 bytes per 32 bits.

Slightly off topic - x36 = 4 data bytes plus 4 parity bits

CCNP 2.0 Certification

2000-06-29 Thread Murphy Tan

Hi All,

I would like to know whether we still can use "Cisco CCNP Preparation
Library (boxed set)- Oct 1999" as study material or preparation for CCNP 2.0
Certification?

Thanks.

Regards,

Murphy
