I have done this and cannot get out of it without reloading the router.
I tried to disconnect and clear lines but nothing helped.
I wouldn't want this to happen in the exam so if you or anyone else comes

There is no comparision.  The MCSE is utilized for Operating System
problems/engineering, while a CCNA/CCNP is there to take care of the
networking infrastructure.  For every 100-500 workstations you may only have
one router.  Therefore if you are at end user site the MCSE will go a far
way. While if you at a service provider a CCNA/CCNP will be more important,
but then again I am assuming that it is a Cisco shop vice one of the other
vendors.

The bottom line is to keep studying, a cert is like a car, you have to up
keep the darn thing.  Learn LINUX, SOLARIS, AIX, WINDOWS XP, JUNIPER, learn
them all.

Don't do it for the money, do it because you like the technology so no
matter what you will not be chasing the imaginary pot of gold.  The is no
end to the certification rainbow.

procedure of how to upgrade the IOS of C2521.
I got no problem with my C2503 because it has a Ethernet port for me to
connect the PC to it.

If you are really security conscious, you would disable telnet and only 
allow ssh (available in IOS12.1.5(X).T or higher.  The command would be:

line vty 0 4
transport input ssh

Also, use AAA because it is your friend

How to setup syslog server [7:23501]

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to setup a syslog server so that I can log messages from cisco 
routers and switches.  I am running this syslog on a Linux box.
Since syslog is a standard feature of unix/linux, I am pretty happy with it, 
given my disdain for Microssoft.

By default syslog server on Linux refuses to accept remoting logging from 
other devices other than itself.  I modify this by turning on the
-r option.  This make the Linux machine to accept remote logging.

My problem is that the syslog messages from Cisco routers and switches are 
logged into the same file (/var/log/messages) that the Linux machines logs 
its own system messages.  How can I separate the messages between the two?

Hi Jason,

I'm a CCNP/DP, I'm also a CCSI (Cisco instructor) - I'm having great
difficulty finding ad hoc work ATM  around my teaching commitments (even
thought I offer my skills cheaply!) - I'm now considering doing my MCSE as
prospective employees require NT/2000 experience even in a Cisco focused
environment.

I'm also going down Cisco's security route so it will be a good idea to
understand OS's a little more!

You can easily use shell scripting to separate the logs for the individual
routers.

We use something similar to the following:
echo Sorting Log Files:
cat /var/log/remote.log |grep routername >> /var/log/cisco/routername
rm -f /var/log/remote.log
killall -HUP syslogd

Has anyone heard of the "link speed divided by 800 rule?" for determing
MTU's. While going through the Global Knowledge VOIP class, they mention the
following

Small, medium, and large sites use 80, 160, and 320 byte fragment sizes
respectively, based on the link speed divided by 800 rule. This
fragmentation is configured with the ip mtu command on the serial interface.
Use FRF.12 for data fragmentation instead, if it is available in your IOS
release. 

I was just wondering if someone could define it briefly.

I have the same question about Smartnet.  If equipment is currently covered
by smartnet, and you buy it, can you buy a replacement smartnet contract in
your own name.  I understand that the original smartnet contract belongs to
the original owner, but I am wondering whether you can take out a new one on
the equipment..

As for software licenses,  if you buy a router that was licensed for
Enterprise IOS, does the license stay with the former owner, or go with the
router?
In this age of dying dotcoms with first-rate, almost new equipment, it would
be a shame if Cisco set up the contracts so that almost-new equipment
becomes worthless in the hands of anyone but the original owners, but that
could be how it works.  Please reply to the group, because I'll bet lots of
other people would like to know the answers to these questions.

I'm assuming you have the console connection to the routers.  I'm also
assuming you have either learned to clear the passwords, or that you have
enable (priveleged EXEC) access to the routers because you know the
passwords.  So from priveleged EXEC mode (the prompt that looks like
Router#, not Router>)

1.  use the s0 or s1 serial interface of the 2521 to connect to the 2503.
(those are the high-speed serial interfaces)

2.  set the clock rate to 400 (the clock rate will be set on the router
with the DCE cable connected) - example
configure terminal
interface serial0
 clock rate 400
 no shutdown
^z  (control-z.  typing end also takes you out of configuration mode)

3.  set an IP address on both serial interfaces to be in the same subnet,
and enable the ethernet interface - example
on the 2521 -
config t
interface serial 0
 ip address 192.168.1.1 255.255.255.0
 end

on the 2503 -
config t
interface serial 0
 ip address 192.168.1.2 255.255.255.0
 no shut
int e0
 ip addr 192.168.2.1 255.255.255.0
 no shut
^z

4.  create a default route on the 2521 to the serial interface of the 2503 -
example
ip route 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 192.168.1.2

5.  ping the 2503 ethernet interface from the 2521 to verify connectivity -
example, if the ethernet were set to 192.168.2.1
ping 192.168.2.1

6.  save the configuration on the 2521
wr mem (or copy run start)

7.  depending on where the IOS image resides,  you want to start up the tftp
server on your PC, or set up your 2503 as a tftp server (if you want to use
the image that resides on the 2503) - example
on the 2503 -
show flash
 (a filename will be displayed - perhaps something like c2500-d-l.120-9.bin)
conf t
tftp-server c2500-d-l.120-9.bin
^z

8.  on the 2521,
copy tftp flash

at the prompt for the ip address, either use the ip address of the PC
running the tftp software (it should be a 192.168.2.x address) or the serial
interface of the 2503 if you're copying that image

at the prompt for the source filename, use the filename that you used
above - in this example, c2500-d-l.120-9.bin

at the prompt for the destination filename, press enter

for all the other prompts, press enter or y

then watch the flash get erased on the 2521 and then watch the tftp transfer
process with all of the exclamation points (!)

When the image is finished tranferring, the 2521 will reload, because it
runs its operating system from flash memory.

Apparently after some experimentation, if you save your config after you
creat the dlci's
before:

and the save your config after you remove your dlci's then they are gove
from the config file

after:

 no ip route-cache

But this is only one scenario, like a multipoint subint with associated with
2 dlci's /pvc and I did not try to delete the sub interface so I am not sure
how the router will behave if I try other senarios

PIXs.  That's actually enough to do what you want to do.  Say that your
legal address on PIX1 is 206.112.71.5/30.  Go to PIX2 startup ipsec and
input  "isakmp key 'your key' address 206.112.71.5".  Then input "crypto
map 'your map-name' 'your sequence number' set peer 206.112.71.5"
Say that your legal address on PIX2 is 206.112.71.6/30.  Go to PIX1 startup
ipsec and input  "isakmp key 'your key' address 206.112.71.6" Then input
"crypto map 'your map-name' 'your sequence number' set peer 206.112.71.6"

Now on PIX1 input nat (inside) 1 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 0 0.Then input global
(outside) 1 206.112.71.5
Now on PIX2 input nat (inside) 1 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 0 0.Then input global
(outside) 1 206.112.71.6
Now just complete your isakmp and crypto-map settings and you will be doing
one single VPN between peers and PAT to the Internet.  That's the best you
can do on PIX with only a 30 bit legal subnet mask.

Hello everyone.

I am trying to implement 2 Internet connectivity solutions while at the
same
time creating 2 VPN solutions between two sites.  What I would like to do
it
use a PIX 515 at both sites, tunnel IPSEC between the sites and still have
normal access to the Internet.

What my problem is that I only have one IP address per-site.  In all of the
solutions provided by Cisco, I would need a pool of registered IP addresses
for NAT.  PAT is not even possible.

I know that this  VPN-PAT-FW1FW1-PAT-VPN solution is available with
Checkpoint.  However, I would prefer a Cisco only solution.

Any suggestions?

ISDN dial-in problems [7:23516]

I have a Cisco7507 T1 Pri card directly connected to a private PBX, I can
dial-out of this 7507 successfully but calls to it from the outside never
get past the PBX.  I'm not sure if the problem is with the router or the
pbx, my isdn service state shows 'out of service' but the interface, t1
controller and channel are all up and operational.  Any suggestions?

My wife works for a pretty big Enterprise company. They have about
300 sites, all of them have IPX running. All WAN stuff is IPX EIGRP in
addition to IP and some SNA. To me it would suggest that bigger Enterprise
companies are still in need for network people with good IPX understanding,
especially those who know how to control it :)
This may be considered by some a legacy stuff, but legacy is what makes
those
who know it even more valuable...

Cat 5009 upgrade - request assistance [7:23518]

Folks,

I have access to a 1995 vintage Cat 5000 and would like to use it in my home
lab.  It has 8m dram and 4m flash on a Sup 1 ws-x5009 and ver 2.45.  My goal
is to upgrade this to the higgest IOS rev possible.  I am not clear on how
to go about doing this,  i.e. how much memeory the sup will support, where I
can get additional memory, how much it will cost, what is the highest
supported rev and is this sufficient for CCIE study.  I am tempted to
purchase a loaded sup 3 to avoid the headaches but would prefer to use the
cash in other parts of my lab.  I would appreciate input from anyone in the
group who could advise on the proper course of action.

Put a cheap token ring card in a PC, and get a nice token ring mau and some
IBM Type 1 cables (the thick cables with huge, ugly hermaphrodite plugs.
Connect the PC to the MAU and connect the 2521's toke ring port to the MAU.

I say to use the TR capability of your router because it is a shame to let a
perfectly good token ring port go to waste.  If you are like just about
everyone else on this list, you will eventually want to at least try for the
CCIE, and token ring is crucial to learn.  I suggest IBM TR stuff because
that is the equipment that finally allowed me to make token ring work
reliably.  I had problems with RJ-45 MAUs, but IBM stuff worked correctly
from the get-go.  And it is cheaper than dirt.

Once you have your TR connection from router to PC running TFTP server
(downloadable from Cisco), type "copy tftp flash", and the router will take
it from there.

Someone else can tell you how to use the console port to upgrade the IOS.  I
strongly recommend buying extremely cheap TR equipment and trying TR.  I
hated token ring before I bought my cheap IBM TR gear, but I love Token Ring
now, and I am studying for my CCIE lab exam, so it's a good thing I love it
now.

Funnies - Cisco 2916M [7:23521]

Hi all, 

This may sound strange, but does the Cisco 2916M have a flash module??

Reason I am asking is that a client has given me one of these to test as it
apparently resets itself. I have had it running under load for 2 weeks with
no problem. Anyhow, I have noticed that there are over 400 VLAN's created on
this box - how do you remove them?? I was also going to upgrade the software
by where does it live on the unit.

Typing "dir" on the switch shows NOTHING at all.

Nothing I have tried works

Any ideas??

IOS upgrade problem - 2621 [7:23526]

I have upgraded the Router with the other IOS. After I download it to the
router and it saved the new IOS to the flash successfully.

After I power up the router, I get the error that the router does not have
enought memory to run IOS. Anyone knows how to erase the new IOS and tftp
back
the "old" IOS to the router (2621).

The command you need is "dir flash:" - don't forget the colon after "flash."

When you do "show version" you should see an indication of the flash memory:

Question PRI? [7:23528]

I have a question regarding the as5200 . currently this access server can
take only two Pri/t1. Im only using one Pri because i hardly get any dialup
users in it.the question is if a pri has 24 channels available and one is
used for signaling. how many analog dialup will it take 23? i imagine that
isdn willl only take 23, but those this apply to analog as well?.
Some users using mrtg are monitoring 46 modems for one pr1.so can a pri take
46 modems ?

Once you get into the section for your router you want to look for "X-Modem
Upgrade" or
something like that. Basically you need to get into the ROM monitor mode and
tftp an
image to your router.

Try removing the modules you have installed and see if
it comes up. Some of the 2600/3600 Modules bump up the
memory requirements.

Go to below URL for the 2600/3600 memory calculation
tool. This lets you choose router model and modules
and IOS and tells you how much memory is needed.

If the router will not boot then you must do this from rommon mode. 
When the router is attempting to boot, issue a break using whichever
keys your terminal software expects.  When you get to a prompt, type
tftpdnld in lowercase.  This will show you a list of variables that need
to be set for a tftp transfer to work properly.  Connect the ethernet
port on the router to your network (or laptop, or whatever has a valid
image), set the necessary variables, and then type tftpdnld again.  

If all variables are set correctly the router will now begin a tftp
transfer.  When it is finished, type "i" or "reset" to reboot the
router.

If the Overseas office is there, and the HQ is here or in some other
geographically separate region, you probably will be best set up with a FR
connection b/t the two sites.  Anything else will probably be cost
prohibitive, or will put too many hops in the picture to meet the latency
requirements for voice.

Thanks Mark!  Your side notes actually answer my question.  There's no doubt
about having PBX at medium or large sites, and therefore a need for a T1/E1
channalized gateway for voice/fax between the router and the PBX.  I am just
concerning if I could do the scenario you just described for  a small
oversea office of 4 or 5 sale people, where they don't have a PBX, but still
able to use the IP phones to talk to HQ using the WAN (VoIP) and still able
to talk to a regular analog phone with the FXO gateway attached to the
router.

ADSL/BVI problems [7:23535]

I finally got it through my thick head that it was a *bridged* connection,
and set up IRB.

Sure enough, I was then able to ping the next hop address with packets
sourced from the public IP I was given.  However, I seem to be unable to
hit anything outside that particular subnet, and I'm not sure why.  If I
try and ping www.yahoo.com, for instance, I get no response.  This is true
if I ping from the internal network (and thus NAT) or if I ping sourced
from the BVI interface (avoiding NAT).

It all works fine if I use the external ADSL bridge.  Ideas?

Does the router end up in rommon mode? From there you can use tftpdnld. You
might have to change your config register. About a week ago I posted a
message about IOS updates to a 1750. Might have had flash in the subject
line. It had links to CCO pages that would be helpful to you. Search the
archives. Good luck. Short answer is that it erases the existing image
before installing the new.

Last time I checked, Analog calls take the same amt. of space as a
single-channel ISDN call does - 1 Channel

23 calls max for analog, 23 calls max for 64k ISDN, 12 calls max for 128k
ISDN.

It's possible to have more than 23 numbers "mapped" in the telco switch to
those channels; maybe they've figured out
a way to monitor by called-number for MRTG rather than by ifIndex!?!
Hmmm... very interesting.

I have yet to send anything to the group, so I hope this comes through.

When using Win2K with the Watchguard, there are few things to be mindful of.

1 - If you have not already, upgrade to version 4.61 of the Watchguard Live 
Security System (LSS).  For those of you who do not know and are interested, 
LSS is the control center for the Watchguard product which runs on a PC.

2 - Upgrade your SOHO units to the latest firmware.

3 - Whatever box is running the LSS needs to be running Win2K SP2.  This is 
not an option.

Personally, when I moved our DC's to Win2K, I reestablished the VPN's to 
three remote sites from the ground up.  While it seems to be the long way 
around the problem, it worked without any noticible problems.  Are you using 
their VPN manager?  The VPN setup I have is relatively small, but I am told 
it works rather well even with high numbers of SOHO units and VPN Clients.

Finally, if their support group is dragging their heels, call your area 
sales rep.  Mine was extremely helpful in obtaining immediate help from 
tech-support.  In addition, the sales rep might be able to point you to 
another Watchguard customer who can provide some additional insight.

No.  Unless your have things like access-lists, policy-based routing, etc.
configured the router will not know or care about anything above layer 3.
i.e. It will only care about IP addresses and IP layer information. (correct
checksum, correct MTU, etc)

If it were me, I'd go for the Sup3 w/ Route Switch Feature Card if you could
afford it.  It will help you considerably if you haven't worked on a switch
doing MLS before.

I have a 5009 myself, and am so frustrated at the limitations.  Creating
vlans, and routing between them is just 1/3 of the objectives for the
Switching exam, much less the CCIE Prep.  MLS is a good chunk of advanced
switching, and you simply can't do it without the SupIII and an RSFC or
NFFC.

I'd invest in one of these myself, but can't afford it. :(

I have access to a 1995 vintage Cat 5000 and would like to use it in my home

to go about doing this,  i.e. how much memeory the sup will support, where I
can get additional memory, how much it will cost, what is the highest
supported rev and is this sufficient for CCIE study.  I am tempted to
purchase a loaded sup 3 to avoid the headaches but would prefer to use the
cash in other parts of my lab.  I would appreciate input from anyone in the
group who could advise on the proper course of action.

aironet 340 question [7:23548]

I've used these bridges quite a bit, and connected the ether ports of them
into our Cat switches, nothing lower than a 2900.  For the first time today
I tried to connect one to a Cat1924.  I believe the configuration is right
on? The vlan, IP and Mask are correct but the switch will not see the
bridge.  Never had this problem before.  Is there something about the 1900's
that the Aironet doesn't like? Anyone have an idea as to what is causing
this?

Well, I have seen one here that has 1,500 static routes, all pointing to a
/32 network addresses.  

22 access routers and 6 or 7 core routers all running static against
/32 addresses.

Please don't ask why... 
And of course, I would never recommend this...  you have to kill couple of
trees just so you have enough paper to print the thing..

I could be wrong, and you're using a new angle I've never seen before on
implementing NAT,
But I think your problem is this:

You need to specify a NAT Pool, and the Access-List 152 is applied to that
pool, rather than what you're trying to do.

This is what I mean.

ip nat pool Name-of-Pool 216.162.122.Y 216.162.122.Z netmask 255.255.255.248
ip nat inside source list 152 pool Name-of-Pool overload

Note: Y and Z are Start and End of IP block, chosen by your preference if
you want to also use statics out of your block.

This may be why you are not getting return traffic.  NAT is broken.

I finally got it through my thick head that it was a *bridged* connection,
and set up IRB.

Sure enough, I was then able to ping the next hop address with packets
sourced from the public IP I was given.  However, I seem to be unable to

try and ping www.yahoo.com, for instance, I get no response.  This is true
if I ping from the internal network (and thus NAT) or if I ping sourced

I am seeing an identical problem on one of my networks. The only difference
is that the source is 223.1.1.128 and a non-existent address.

Just to confirm that this was a spoofed address, I configured a host on my
network with 223.1.1.1 and tried pinging 223.1.1.128. I thought if I get a
response, then it's a misconfigured device, if not response then it would be
a spoofed ip.

I put a sniffer on it and I'm seeing multiple MAC addresses as the source of
223.1.1.128.

Have you been ablet o track this any further on your network?

Max DRAM on a Sup I is 20MB. I'll assume 4 soldered on the board plus one
stick of 4 or 16. Older hardware versions 1.6 and below? of the Sup I
required a special DRAM SIMM that Cisco really charged for. Verify your
hardware version before buying any DRAM. I've used www.rockymountainram.com
for other DRAM and Flash. There are folks on this list who also sell DRAM.
The highest OS that a Sup I can support is something like 4.5(9). You will
have to update OS in steps. First a 3xx version, then the 4.5 version. Look
on CCO for instructions for updating CatOS. It will specify exactly what you
have to do. It will also provide the required DRAM and Flash values.
IMHO You should be able to inexpensively upgrade your Sup I to learn the
basics of switching. When you need to learn more then consider the Sup III.

If you haven't already gotten an answer, this is my take on it:

The 2501 doesn't have an image that supports PPPoE, so you can't hook your
DSL directly into it, and do NAT overload for all devices, including the
router to access the internet.  This being said, if you want to connect to
your 2501, you will need to use something that puts you on the desktop of
your PC, and then telnet from your PC to router.  Router won't be able to
talk to internet, unless you implement some sort of Internet Connection
sharing on the desktop (and the ICS native to Win98 doesn't work for $h!t in
my experience, so who knows how it works on Win2K Pro).

Trying to use a Linksys or Netgear DSL router will be trial and error, with
a failure rate most imminent.  Reason being is that you would still need to
use PAT (since you only have one IP from ISP), and I don't think the Linksys
or Netgear can do this.

Your biggest issue is you only get one IP usually with PPPoE, and it's lease
expires every couple of days. :(  If this is not the case for you, you're in
luck, Static IP and a PPPoE compliant router like the Cisco 1750 and a
WIC-1ENET card will make it possible for you to reach your 2501 from the net
without issue.

Even PCAnywhere or other Terminal program will only work for a limited time
if your IP constantly changes. :(

I think the NAT config I'm using is valid; I've been using it (and
variations on that theme) for while with no problem.

The access list tells the router to NAT traffic from 192.168.10.0/24.
Since I have only the one public IP, and it is assigned to the interface,
there's no NAT pool to configure, so I configure NAT overload on the
interface itself.  While my public IP is part of that /29, I only get one
IP out of that /29.  Other customers of the ISP are using other IPs in that
subnet.

Boot Reg [7:23561]

Does anyone know how to change or erase the boot register on a Cisco 2621
Series Router?

I changed the value yesterday, and in that process I inserted a typo, now
the router doesn't boot. (not even in rommon, or when you press Ctrl-Break
during the boot cycle) Just hangs with a blinking cursor and displays
jibberish when I type something.(and to note the enter key doesn't seem to
do anything)

To register or not to register??? Please help [7:23562]

I am taking my CCIE la soon and I don't know if I shoud register for the 
Mentor tech class.I heard that they are going bankrupt?
I called them, they told me that they have some problem but they are not 
going bankrupt and they are still offering the ECp1 class.
So I don't know if I should register or not?
Any input will be helpful

CAT 2948G (L2) vs. CAT3548-XL [7:23563]

Hi All,

I saw an ads with Cisco CAT 2948G Layer 2 switch that has a price almost the
same as the Cisco CAT 3548-EN-XL.  Based on the discription, It seems that
the 2948G running CATOS, while 3548s running IOS.  Also, 2948G has a better
speed of up to 24Gbps whereas the 3548s only up to 10.8Gbps.  Assuming they
both are at the same price, which should I choose? I am also considering the
QoS on the switch to support VoIP.  Does 2948G support the same features as
3548XL as well?  We are using many of 3548s at the HQ and like to buy Cisco
CAT for remote offices.  Also, Is 2948G in "End of Life" or "End of
Support"?  Cisco just came out a new 2980G that is same as 2948G but has 80
10/100 ports.

It appears that the console port baud rate has been changed.  Have you
tried changing the baud settings in your terminal software?  If not, try
1200, 2400, and 4800 as well as 9600.

Thanks Mark for your reply.

I happened to see someone mention that certain cisco router can act as a
pppoe-client. After I check out cisco website, I am happy to see that my
little 1601 with 12.2.4T support pppoe.

It takes me an hour last night to get it working. forgot to put " ppp chap
hostname" and "ppp chap password" first, later, find out that my isp only
accept pap, after change to pap, still not working. after change " ppp
authen pap " to ppp authen pap callin" , finally it works . I got public IP
and my Vi1 is up. Still don't know why I should put callin there. Do I call
my isp or my isp will call me?

>From the pppoe client I have on my PC, I see the option " idle timeout" , I
guess when I set to 24hr, and have some activity , then I may keep that ip .
for the router, I am not sure where i put this info. But at least , I can
pcanywhere into my pc, then console into router and get router's public IP,
then telnet into the router from internet. I will check my ip on PC each
morning to make sure I can access it from internet.

I can bear with the ip change, my original question is " I can telnet from
internet into my win98, but when I am in command console, I cannot telnet
out to my router. " . Maybe only Unix can do that. Anyway, it is not
important anymore.

Have browsed a couple of chapters, and studied two more.

This is a very good book. It's purpose is to provide in-depth hands on
configuration study for BGP on Cisco routers. As such it is set up more like
a series of detailed labs than a textbook.

As a result, there is some repetition. This can be tedious when reading. But
in a lab learning situation this is a wonderful approach. Step by step
procedures and detailed router outputs guide the student through
configuration, reading of results, and troubleshooting.

If you want to get to know BGP on Cisco routers from the inside out, this
book is definitely a must for your library. There is great detail, and
plenty of examples, both of the commands and their options, and the results
you should see after implementing those commands.

If you setup your acl to monitor just telnet traffic, then I would not worry
about perfornamce drop. If you are going to inspect every(or lots of)
tcp/udp packets, then I would.

Remember in cbac, if you apply on external interface, you have to deny
everything you want inspected. But if you apply acl on internal interface
then permit what you want inspected. Also, icmp can not be inspected thru
cbac.

The licenses do not transfer.  If you buy the hardware and want to put it on
Smartnet,
then Cisco wants to resell you a license and will most likely send a third
party out to
"recertify the equipment".

The process is not hard.  Basically you order new licenses and smartnet and
then they
will schedule someone to check it out.

If you are purchasing gear let me know.  I have a list of .com gear I can
forward you.
I know a financial company who just foreclosed on a .com.

default-routes for eigrp?? [7:23581]

Hello,
How or what command do I need to configure on my border router to create a 
default route for my remote router that is connected to this border router 
to go out?
The border router and remote router are running eigrp 100
The border router is also running bgp with another router acting as an ISP 
router.
I can get to networks in the border router from other routers past the ISP 
router but not to the network in the remote router.
If I turn on ospf on the border router and the remote router and configure 
the default-information originate command on the border router, it generates 
a default route for the remote router and I can get to the networks in the 
remote router. How can I do the same with Eigrp without using the ip route 
0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 next-hop-ip command on the remote router.(With this command, 
it works..obviously)
Please advise.

No , there is no way to integrate PIX with an anti-Virus , there is no
similar CVP functionality in PIX .
You need to put an Anti-virus wich acts like a proxy enough to caputre all
the trafic and then redirecting it to the destination , but PIX treats this
traffic as a normal traffic it does not care about , my advice is to
invistigate in the
Anti-Virus products and , dont be aware no problem  for any product to be
supported by PIX because there is no interaction.

I probably see the potential cause would be the baud rate. ( just because
you see some
garbled messages )

Cisco routers by default has 2 bits allocated for baud rate.  2 bits make 4
combinations
viz, 1200, 4800, 9600 and 2400. Try these settings one by one on the
Hyperterm session
that you had connected the system and try.  Let me know the outcome.

I have to put a "it depends" reply in here also.

First off, I don't consider my career as my Cisco Career.  It is my career
period.  And I do what I need to keep that career moving.

I have CCDP/CCNP (CCDA/CCNA of course) and 3 flavours of MCSE (2000, 4.0,
3.51) and Banyan stuff too (CBE/CBI - remember Vines?)

My last contracts have been a mixture of everything.  Overall techie that
can keep the project moving and also
keep the "experts" honest.

It all depends on the work you want to do and sometimes - what you can get.

For the past while it seems that I alternate between a Cisco job, then an NT
job and then a mix and then it starts all over.

If you have the time to get another certification then it can't hurt.  But
be warned - the W2K exams are not like the NT exams, especially the W2K
design exams.  All I'm saying is, take them seriously.

If you think that things Microsoft are "pretty much nothing" then it
probably isn't for you.

Tried that...first on the border router thinking that it would inject a 
default route to the remote router..on the remote router shows as candiate 
route * But does not work..(This command works for RIP BTW)
Then tried the same command on the remote routerNo luck
Here, let me post the configs for you so you can help me...once again.

Also here is the output of the sh ip route command on the ISP router for the 
netw/ip that I am trying to ping on the remote router:
   209.125.17.0/32 is subnetted, 1 subnets

ISP#ping 209.125.17.1

Type escape sequence to abort.

What am I missing on the border router? Trace dies there

As the above heading says I'm going to install a Cisco (formerly Arrowpoint) 
CSS switch and I just wanted to know how to configure URL load balancing on 
it as this is what the customer is requesting.
