Re: [slim] Rebuffering is ruining the Squeezebox experience
I am occasionally experiencing rebuffering when playing music, it seems to be the case when I synch 2 or more (never more than 4) players. In fact, it is happening with every song I am listening to right now. The songs stop and SBS seems to be in a ten second loop in timing, but goes silent, then it resumes just to do it again or to successfully continue (as it does it again). Sometimes it gets stuck in the exact same point in a song repeatedly. Thus eliminating any possibility that it is random wireless behavior. The log file states *nothing* even though there clearly is a problem. When this happens, I restart the computer (and thus SBS) and than seems to fix the issue. It's happened a dozen times since I got 7.4.1, I listen to music daily. I can't recall it ever happening on the one player I have that is never synched with anything else, on which I always listen to music for at least an hour a day while I work out in the morning.. This is something that 7.4.1 introduced, I very very very seldom saw this type of behavior before. I think it may be a synching issue. -- pablolie ...pablo Server: Shuttle X27D - Ubuntu 8.04LTS - SBS 7.4.1 Sources: SB3 (3), SB Boom (3), Duet (1), Radio (1), Accuphase DP65v CD (used as DAC mostly) Amplifiers: Accuphase E306v - Creek OBH21/22 Loudspeakers: Ceeroy 3-way tower (tuned) - Audioengine 5/S8 - Acoustic Energy Aego M Headphones: Grado SR-1 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=65719 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Good Server Hardware Option
i run SBS on an Atom 330 myself, because I was tired of keeping the 70W (at idle) silent server always on. I run Linux Ubuntu on a 330 powered Shuttle X27D, and SBS runs well after some installation frustration. The little server never draw more than 26W, and it is surprisingly versatile. I now use it all the time for web cruising and 90% of day to date duties, I only now have to turn on the big machine to run the more heavyweight Windows Office Apps. I can recommend a 330 based SBS server. Oh, my music collection is external. The server is very lightweight, just runs off a 32GB SSD, which of course makes it very snappy when booting, and further increases power efficiency. -- pablolie ...pablo Server: Shuttle X27D - Ubuntu 8.04LTS - SBS 7.4.1 Sources: SB3 (3), SB Boom (3), Duet (1), Radio (1), Accuphase DP65v CD (used as DAC mostly) Amplifiers: Accuphase E306v - Creek OBH21/22 Loudspeakers: Ceeroy 3-way tower (tuned) - Audioengine 5/S8 - Acoustic Energy Aego M Headphones: Grado SR-1 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=74924 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
Re: [slim] Ideas for improving the sync-experience
Most important thing for me would be to get the synch between a *Duet* and a *Boom* working reliably. There are issues, every time I play theese two products synched, in 7.4.1. I am happy with the ability to synch SB3 and Boom. I am pretty sure the Duet is the culprit these days: they get out of synch, and then there are several seconds of pause. Re: [slim] New computer to act as server..?
There are several systems available like this one http://us.shuttle.com/X350.aspx Note this is not the only one, and I do not work for the company or anything related. It's a neat clean design (IMO) and suffices for browsing and the task you have in mind. (I'd still rather build my own :-)) - Run quietly when it's 'sleeping'(so towers are out of the question???) Pretty much any computer will be fairly silent when in low-power sleep mode. But quite a few computers these days can be quiet even under load - they just have to be designed smartly. I have a very quiet office and silence is a big thing for me. I'll be using if for storing music, surfing the net, some basic work etc. (using MS office) and a little bit of gaming (generally 4-5 year old games). Like someone else said, any sort of gaming prolly means you want to look for ION graphics at least. I'd like to have the server on this machine and having the server on the USB drive has failed utterly for me. What is 'Wake On LAN' and how would it work in practise? Does it mean I can shut down my computer but the SB would wake it up..? Computers have several low power modes these days. If it's really shut down, nothing other than pushing the power on switch will make the computer run. However, sleep mode is something you can enable. Sleep mode is a low power mode that preserves the computer's current status (running programs etc) and thus you don't have to go through boot-up when waking it up. The computer will only draw a few watts in sleep mode. In sleep mode, the computer will be passively waiting for something to wake it up and feed power to all motherboard components again and quickly resume operation. It typically would be a keystroke or mouse click, but you can also enable a function called WOL. It means the computer is waiting for a specific wake-up request from the network. If it's a server, that means that clients can wake it up when they have a request for the server. The Squeeze clients support this and will send WOL requests to your sleeping SBS. One thing to keep in mind is that WOL can be a bit finicky to really get to work in Windows given the vast array pf possible hardware. So I would not 100% count on it to work. -- pablolie ...pablo Server: MiniITX build w/Intel D510MO - Ubuntu 10.04LTS - SBS 7.5.3 Sources: SB3 (3), SB Boom (3), Duet (1), Radio (1), Accuphase DP65v CD (used as DAC mostly) Amplifiers: Accuphase E306v - Creek OBH21/22 Loudspeakers: Ceeroy 3-way tower (tuned) - Audioengine 5/S8 - Acoustic Energy Aego M Headphones: Grado SR-1 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87453 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The SqueezeBox system is easy: You need the server SqueezeboxServer software (SBS), which can run on any Windows, Appls or Linux computer; or is embedded in the SB Touch product. The music collection (pretty much any format) is controlled, organized and streamed by the SBS. Then you have clients. The ones that come probably closest to your requirements are the Touch and the Duet. I own a Duet, but find it the least appealing of all players, especially now that better control interfaces than the controller exist. I find myself using my iPad instead of the Controller all the time. Buy a Touch. Install SBS on your laptop... or copy your music collection to a drive and connect it to the Touch directly... and off you go. I started with the Squeeze system in 2005 I think. Re: [slim] What The **** Do I Need?
I think for every SB poweruser that runs a Linux server, owns several clients and what not, there have been moments of frustration. I all fairness, *every* long term user of *every* product has those. I give the SB developers kudos for always coming through in the end. *Always*. The rough patches never seem to last too long, and never ever have prevented me from basic music listening for more than a few minutes (frustrating as that can be). I have been loud with, uhm, candid feedback at times in these forums, but in the end I am still here, I am happy, and I don't see anything more flexible and versatile in the marketplace. I think the SB concept is also unique in its ability to be extremely configurable to the needs of powerusers (who then are first to discover cornercase issues), and yet again be absolutely able to deliver on a dumbed down, reliable user experience. Heck, I hope my mom isn't reading this, but she uses the heck out of her SB Radio when she's here for several months a year. Works like a charm for her. I think based on the stated requirements of the OP - a Touch will do mighty fine. I wamt a Touch, and yet in all credit to the SB concept my collection of devices delivers on *every* need I have to this day, and I end up canceling the Touch order and buying music or some other non-music gadget instead... My only fear is that I continue to think Logitech undermarkets the product and I wonder about the long term commitment behind the concept... then again, a unique aspect about the product is its open source nature, and as such I think it's pretty sure it'll never die... I somehow think we users will keep meeting in these forums for many years to come, which is quite unique for product forums. -- pablolie ...pablo Server: MiniITX build w/Intel DH61DL i3-2100T - Ubuntu 11.04 - SBS 7.5.4 Sources: SB3 (3), SB Boom (3), Duet (1), Radio (1), Accuphase DP65v CD (used as DAC mostly) Amplifiers: Accuphase E306v - Creek OBH21/22 Loudspeakers: Ceeroy 3-way tower (tuned) - Audioengine 5/S8 - Acoustic Energy Aego M Headphones: Grado SR-1 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=88215 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Like any mass-vs-hobbist product there's not going to be one generic product that covers every need. Just like integrated cameras in smartphones aren't about to kill the high end camera market, integrated player software or simplistic products are not going to end the niche the SB products play in. Is the SB something everybody should have in their home? No. But for many of us with audiophile aspirations and that view their music as a collection (and not a short term repository of current hits) the SB concept has and will retain a lot of appeal because of its range and flexibility. Re: [slim] Any new Squeezebox Devices on the horizon?
I think the Squeezbox is under-marketed and misunderstood. I think it has the genuine potential to appeal to both the plugplay crowd with multicolor touch screens (UI needs to be dumbed down), and to us fiddlers. I agree with those ho propose a Boom v2, which could become the most popular device if priced right and with UI improvements for the PP crowd. Equally, I think the next Touch simply needs a revised UI as does the server software, hiding a lot of the complexity and more plug and play. Then there should be an expert mode (with disclaimer) that allows us old school users to continue with our ways. What I really miss in the SB range, personally, is an upmarket device in the $500-1000 range (between the aging Transporter and the Touch), something like the current Touch but with upgraded and latest gen electronics. Anyone else feel that way? How about something that automatically FLACs any analog source that flows through its DA and sends it back to the server, and prompts you to name it from the UI? I still have analog material I have not converted because of the cumbersome factor... i do very much hope Logitech keeps evolving the concept - think slim, think audio quality as a huge priority. there are shortcomings with the user interface, which puts basic and rigid data first; and interaction with and dynamic management of music not quite so. but i can't see another product i could use to replace my SB, and i think it'd be tragically silly of Logitech to abandon or reinvent the concept against some other flawed premise (such as the revue, which i bought and gave away). -- pablolie ...pablo Server: MiniITX build w/Intel DH61DL i3-2100T - Ubuntu 11.04 - SBS 7.6.1 Sources: SB3 (3), SB Boom (3), Touch (1), Duet (1), Radio (1), Accuphase DP65v CD (used as DAC for SB3 mostly) Amplifiers: Accuphase E306v - Creek OBH21/22 Loudspeakers: Ceeroy 3-way tower (tuned) - Audioengine 5/S8 - Acoustic Energy Aego M Headphones: Grado SR-1 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=93924 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] What if Logitech pulls the plug
The key here is to define work - would the software continue to be officially worked on and thus available for new OS updates that, over time, are sure to obsolete any application frozen in time? No. However, the way I see it, for the foreseeable future it is easy to create a dedicated appliance that can run the music environment for many years. That appliance is self-contained, can stay frozen in time OS-wise with the last official LMS release (whould it come to that) and can be controlled/accessed via a web server. One copuld also use free software such as VMware Player (not an andorsement) to run an old OS and the LMS application on top of a newer machine and OS if needed (for as long as said virtualization software vendor supports the old OS, that is). So I don't worry too much. I often wonders about all of the LMS upgrades I have done over the years - where they really necessary? Why not simply stay with an old, proven version? Honestly, the only new feature I ever required ion the SBS/LMS software was support for new players or in rare cases error fixes (I don't remember which version utterly screwed up synchronization, that and making the wireless usable are the only upgrades I ever recall feeling I really needed). I think some new technology development will eventually once again yet more fundamentally change the way I listen to music. I am not *that* old, but I feel my way of listening to music (relatively high end *stereo* system in a dedicated environment) relegates me to dinosaur status. :) pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] What if Logitech pulls the plug
I think such trends in the end are cyclical and transitory. It is also merely an expression of the way stuff is marketed and current Zeitgesit - which can change at the drop of a dime. :) Furthermore, I think in this forum you have a somewhat distorted probe of people in general. I think that it is the people that, in the past, had a few sad albums on a neglected shelf (a scratched Best of Chicago CD and such), those are the ones that now at least have access to more stuff. They didn't buy much then, they certainly won't buy now, but at least now they have access to more up to date music, and the industry now can draw some steady if meager revenue from them. The people that used to have over a thousand CDs and hundreds of albums and cared for them lovingly, and played them on equipment they had emotional attachment to... you find a lot of them in these forums, but they weren't the majority 25 years ago nor will they ever be. One could furthermore point out that while it seems an eternal and unchanging truth that people's entire entertainment content naturally belongs in an Amazon or iTunes cloud, that phenomenon is recent, and immensely vulnerable to singular marketing mistakes or changing fortunes of the companies involved. pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=95603 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

As of my experience, all of these require proprietary interfaces to 3rd party APIs (after all, that's what they are about) so you can't open-source them. Ridiculous as it is: some of the services, even the ones whose business is selling subscriptions, require you to sign an NDA to only get their API docs. I have not taken a look at the LMS PERL code -and I am not a PERL programmer, but it reads quite well as a rule. It's not the 3rd party APIs that would seem the problem to me, though - the whole point about an API is that it hides inner complexity, i.e. to stream Pandora I don't need to do what they do internally, but rather merely invoke their published methods in my program. In LMS, it seems to me, all 3rd party APIs are optional, I can disable them within the Applications/Plugin options. It is the mandatory entry of a user account and password at mysqueezebox.com, required for installation and operation, that seems the liability when it comes to future proofing the LMS. I am not the least interested in how Logitech implements mysqueezebox.com - all I am saying is that, as a last service to Squeeezebox customers, Logitech should publish an open source version of LMS that runs in total autonomy within customers' home networks, blissfully unaware and independent of mysqueeezebox.com. The latter should be an optional application, like Pandora or others. That way a lot of the paranoia about the future-proof nature of our Squeezebox investment would be gone. pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=96606 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

[slim] How to Future-Proof your SB Setup
While I am excited to see some plans about Open Source support for the platform, on the other hand I am pragmatic and I guess I think a thread on how to keep the SB investment going, longer term, in a constantly evolving OS environment, can work. I have a number of SB3, SB Boom, SB Touch and SB Radio, and truly like the value proposition. I am not sure when eventually the electronics would give out -they seem well build- but if I consider another 10-15 years of lifetime before I consider an alternative (not all that unusual with audio equipment), I am looking at the current LMS software becoming incompatible with pretty much any environment that may be out there. So the easiest option is prolly to get 2 low spec servers, configure them with compatible OS that works here and now (Ubuntu 12.04), disable updates, and keep them ready for the eventuality. For the next few years, I am running LMS on a dedicated virtual machine on my system. That is a pretty elegant solution (anytime something acts weird I can just delete the old VM and reload the original one within minutes), but the question is at which point VMware Player or Workstation will stop supporting an Ubuntu OS that supports the current and final version of LMS. So I guess over the next few months I will build 2 dedicated backup servers that I simply store up. I am sure even in 15 years there will be a way to integrate IPv4 and 1GE into a home network environment via some adapter. Maybe there'll be some hot new tech that makes me listen to music totally different, but looking at my traditional patterns I doubt such a fundamental audio revolution will happen for audiophiles. Hence I want to think about how to protect my SB environment. pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=98464 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Thinking about my Squeezebox/LMS future
I would hope that, if Logitech pulls the plug on msb.com, they would release a final LMS version without hooks to it... Even if they don't the SB work ok without SB access. I don't listen to internet radio nor do I ever use msb.com, to me it is always about streaming FLAC or MP3 files from computer to the SBen around the house. A while ago, I simple created an Ubuntu 12.04 VM with SBS on it - it is the only thing the VM does. Everytime something goes halfway weird I can always go and delete the current VM and spin up the original, clean OVA file. Hence, my only concern is at what point in time will VM Player stop supporting Ubuntu 12.04, and whether I'll be able to then create a new VM with SBS running on a supported Ubuntu version. I hope that is many, many years out. :-) ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine running Ubuntu 12.04 + LMS 7.7.3 on VMware Player System: SB Touch --optical-- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR-- Creek Destiny Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval-- KEF LS50 Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic- AudioEngine5 pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=100711 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Julf wrote: So when only using their analog sections? The data comes into either device as a digital stream (PCM out of the Touch for the Benchmark, USB from the computer to the AE D1), so they do the DA conversion and -let's say for the first test- send it out to the headphone output. Both are very good, but the benchmark is clearly superior even to people who aren't audiophiles. This is the more minimalist test, and I can use the same headphone set on either, making it quite clear it is only a DAC head-to-head comparison. If we include the rest of the chain... it is a very unfair comparison. The Benchmark feeds into a few thou of gear to deliver room filling audio, the AE D1 feeds my AE A2 computer monitors. Don't get me wrong, the latter at close distance -and especially fed through the D1- sounds absolutely delightful, and I will not even qualify that with considering their price. I love that setup and spend several hours listening to music that way most days. And I have tried connecting the rest of the premium chain directly to the Touch (using its internal DAC), and I will take the benchmark every time. The music opens up very clearly. My girlfriend, who as a rule couldn't care less, noticed the day I connected the Benchmark. And as to connecting the A2s directly to the computer's speaker output... that would be such a waste. :-) I am not saying you can't get extremely satisfying sound for way less than a thousand dollars... I have given rave reviews about the AE A5 and A2, and the AE D1 or the Dragonfly are *fantastic*. But for my audio shrine I will indulge some in the diminishing results one gets out of carefully selecting better components. Re: [slim] Subwoofer with Duet/Classic
the SB Boom does a very good jopb at feeding a sub through the audio out. doing so produces an amazing effect, it allwed the Boom to fill my large garage with Gym with very high quality sound. now there are an increasing number of DACs and Integrated Amps with the ability to offer separate, configurable separate outputs for speakers and a sub. the NAD D7050, D3020 and their higher end M12 are examples (i have installed the D7050 for a friend -works great- and intend to get the M12. i do not work in audio in this is not an endorsement, i only mention products that have that built-in capability). you *can* pleasantly complement full-range bookshelf speakers with a subwoofer to add a subtle low end boost, but it is a very delicate exercise, and often people end up with something that sounds worse as a whole. i am doing that with my current setup, but the sub is turned to 10% volume at most. i experimented with the internal sub's crossover and it murked things up, not an option with my setup. ...pablo Server: Virtual Machine running Ubuntu 12.04 + LMS 7.7.3 on VMware Player System: SB Touch --optical-- Benchmark DAC2HGC --AnalysisPlus Oval Copper XLR-- NAD M22 Power Amp --AnalysisPlus Black Mesh Oval-- Totem Element Fire Other Rooms: 2x SB Boom; 1x SB Radio; 1x SB Classic- MusicalFidelity M1PWR - Totem DreamCatcher Computer audio: workstation --USB-- audioengine D1 - Grado PS500e pablolie's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3816 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=103101 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
