Re: [Flexradio] Radio

2017-03-13 Thread LEE MUSHEL
Well, this thing (or it's current replacement) does cost $200 but if you don't
have to worry about switch timing or the protection of a receiver that might
cost much more than $500 I won't argue that this is a good suggestion. I
bought one to use with an SDR-IQ or Flex1500 and one of my older backup
transceivers.

Good morning all,
Is there a way to use the flex 3000 as a receiver
and transmit on something else.

Yes, this is a very good solution! I had to do something like this but
without the summer/winter switch when I decided to modify an ARC-5 BC453-B
WWII receiver for SDR. It had occurred to me that it would be a good idea
to explain to a local club how easy it was to convert the old radio to SDR.
I proceeded to remove all of the original internal components from the
BC-453 and then put a Flex1500 plus power supply plus cooling fan plus
speaker plus audio amp in the box while carefully maintaining the original
appearance of the old radio. I used an on line purchased small audio amp
and computer speaker without giving thought to what I might be doing to the
audio out of the Flex1500! Not at all smart and it resulted in an unplanned
visit of my 1500 back to Austin! But that capacitor should be a word to the
wise!

A capacitor in-line of sufficient rating to handle the voltages to be
encountered and with sufficient capacity to pass the lowest freqs of
interest will turn off your ear heaters. Maybe you want to wire in a
Summer-Winter switch to be able to select cool or warm operation as the
seasons change.

Heating in headphones and speakers is usually caused by D.C. coming out of
the amp. I underline usually maybe something I'm not considering
though.

and once it goes thur its boot and you click the on button on powersdr
the radio
goes into transmit and have to shut it down. also reads hi swr even
though a

dummy load is connected.
what I did, checked all connections on the radio,FA-66 and the
computer,all

are correct.
thought maybe the software was corrupted ,so cleaned house and removed
all the
flex and all the power sdr files and did a clean reinstall of 2.5.3.
install
went as it should. re booted the system and the same result ,instant
transmit

hi swr.
When power sdr is booting, there is NO relay noise from the 1000 at
all
,listened twice to be sure, nothing. used to hear relays clicking in or
out.

Tried every thing with a older powersdr, same thing.

Re: [Flexradio] CW jack input on the Flex 5000

2014-04-06 Thread Lee Mushel
No, I'm not cheating. I do have a Begali straight key but I got a K1EL for
use with the 600 meter experiment when I was preparing to set up a beacon.
Naturally the K1EL wouldn't key either 3000 or 5000 without a mod but that
may vary with age of the Flex radio. Still, simple examination of the
keyer circuits and the radio isn't too difficult. I would think that any
keyer could be compatible. But you have to remember that some knowledge
and work might be needed.

I think they are referring to an external KEY (ex. Bencher), not external
keyer. If you are using an external paddle key, it goes to the tip, sleeve
and ring. Straight key, Vibraplex, or external electronic keyer just uses
tip and sleeve. Gotta fix the settings in Setup for straight key.

I use an external keyer, not the Flex internal iambic keyer, so I just
hook output of keyer to the tip and sleeve (I think). Writing this from
memory (I should check to be sure for you).

I haven't liked any of my rig's internal keyers (Kenwood, Icom, Flex) as
you had to fiddle to much to change speed and such. My trusty HamGadgets
keyer fits perfect under the video monitor screen, big knob right there
when I need to slow down or speed up. Using the Flex internal keyer, gotta
grab the mouse, point click, point click, point click just to slow down
for a guy. Give me carpal tunnel . all that ... The Icom, keyer
speed was down like 3 button menu pushes, hold this for 2 seconds, but not
1 or 4 seconds, then click this other thing, twist a knob through menus

Don't want a knob for anything else though. Just give me a good mouse and
keyboard and my Flex.

Guys,

I don’t understand why Flex 5000 manual says that, when t using an
external keyer, the “ring” connection of the stereo quarter inch plug is
used, as well as the “tip” and the “sleeve.,” while for a straight key
the “ring is not connected. Don’t all external keyers just have two
conductor outputs, mimicking a straight key?

And, I assume when using an external keyed, “iambic” is NOT checked.

Can someone explain the cabling from an external keyed to the Flex 5000,
and why it is so?

Re: [Flexradio] What

2014-02-27 Thread Lee Mushel

Jay,

Your analysis is probably correct but if it will make you feel any better I
once commented on 40 meters that I used my V/U upgrade along with an
Elecraft XV144 to watch both the input and output of repeaters. I thought
that was a perfectly normal thing to do but you have no idea how much abuse
came down on my head because I actually used equipment like that to listen
to a repeater! The only time things were worse was when I had admitted,
one day, that I had owned my flex radio for some time but didn't feel I had
come anywhere near to mastering it! Wow! Those fellows even included
my mother in what was then dumped on me!

Re: [Flexradio] Question on buying a used 3000

2014-01-13 Thread Lee Mushel
Yes, Neal, my 3000 went back for this whatever reason. I don't think it
was any Big Thing and I recall that when it got back to me I shook the radio
and it rattled. To the credit of Flex they simply told me to open the
case and identify the rattle source. It turned out to be a surface mount
resistor and I was able to identify it with the help of my Smart Tweezers.
I was then asked to photograph a certain point and from that photo they
determined that nothing was missing and the resistor must have been
accidentally overlooked in the modification process. End of story. I was
always pleased because they obviously had enough faith in my technical
ability to assure that any problem could be identified remotely.

But I would certainly like to add one point for the benefit of the new
comers to the Flex Community who might not be aware of all of the rumors
and unsubstantiated fears that something might be wrong with this, that or
something else. You can be sure that part of the Flex Owner Culture is the
occasional rise of the fear that Engineering Change Orders for imagined
upgrades or repairs of defect might have taken place in the past. There
have been an infinite number of postings on the reflectors covering these
fears. I don't think we have to go through this again!

John,

I don't think you have anything to worry about.

The only thing I remember is there was a preamp mod done right after the
radio was introduced, I think the preamp was too hot so it had to be
tamed a bit. Bit this was literally months after it was introduced so I
think you are okay!

Besides, if it isn't I am sure Flex will do it for you!

[Flexradio] Changing the subject slightly

2014-01-13 Thread Lee Mushel

I want to share an experience I had earlier today.
Some of you know that I have a fully upgraded 5000A. And one of my major
ham radio interests is emergency communications. This morning I had the
great pleasure of telling a fellow amateur I was talking to on a 2M repeater
that I was going to go from 2M to 40 meters using the same rig and the same
antenna! And you don't need a tuner! All you do is turn a crank! I don't
think he believed me when I described the few minutes of time needed to make
the change. And I know he didn't believe the SWR numbers I described!

You know, those boys from Washington have made a really wonderful addition
to ham radio!

I will admit that I have done all the things that the manual warns about
including entanglements a collapsing telescopic tower and not being
careful about it tipping into a tree. But I think that's all behind me
now! I can hardly wait for the Wisconsin snow to disappear. Portable
operation will certainly be different for me!

2013-12-23 Thread Lee Mushel
Well, Bruce, yes, when we look out the window we see the same thing! There
are a lot of good things to be said about 2.7.2 and whatever was done to the
drivers is really outstanding! I'm running 2.7.2 for the 1500 and 5000A
and am well pleased! The 3000, my workhorse ragchew machine, is still on
2.3.5 but that's because it's supported by a computer I bought on eBay,
sawed away metal so I could install a firewire board (recommended by Flex),
and is now running at about 70% processor load with XP. It has never been
connected to the internet since being purchased for $140 nearly 4 years
ago. But it never misses a beat so, as they say, if it ain't broke, don't
fix it. Sure, I realize that five minutes from now the screen might go
blue and I will have to do something. One of these days, since I have a
fully upgraded 5000A (with all backpanel connectors occupied) I might even
count how many slices are available to me. I might even add those from
the couple of non-Flex SDR receivers I have.

The important thing is that I am now accumulating a list of folks who have
asked me to comment on the basics of SDR since they are thinking about
it. That's quite a change from a year ago when if I wore my Flex cap to a
ham event I would be lucky if someone didn't throw rocks (or worse) at me!

Re: [Flexradio] Comments on PowerSDR v2.7.2

2013-12-23 Thread Lee Mushel
Robert,

Indeed, my Flex cap is a prized possession! Of course not as much a one as
the note I got from Gerald saying that even though I had installed one of the
classic National turns counting dials on the center front panel of my 5000A he
still considered me a true Flexer.

That aside, the reason for the cap, I think, was to sort of apologize for the
fact that I placed the order for the Flex5000A in very early spring (I think it
was in April and none existed at that time) and the UPS driver didn't hand the
box to me until very nearly September! But people really should be more
patient. For example, my new, highly anticipated antenna with the boat winch
handle from the good folks out west was ordered in an even earlier month this
year and at the moment I believe it is only now on it's way to me and is
probably on Highway 80 in South Dakota! You really have to keep in mind the
service these little companies perform for our hobby and cut them a little
slack!

One final comment. And you have to understand that such a cap has to have
appropriate adornments. Like a TAPR membership pin and pins from the ARRL
indicating that you have been a member for well over 50 years and a life member
for over 40 ! The stuff people like to ignore as they walk past !

Re: [Flexradio] Tuner Question for Flex-5000

2013-12-16 Thread Lee Mushel
I feel that Mr. Lehmann's comments are absolutely sound and, Joe, if I were
in your position I would do exactly as he says. Actually, since I run both
100 watts and internal tuner and external amp with external manual tuner I
have accidentally stumbled upon Hans-Joachim's thinking and experience no
problems since I, too, am not a contester and have been able to manually
tune things since 1959!

Dear Joe,
if you are definitely sure you wouldn't ever need any other radio
and any higher power than your 100 W, the internal tuner could be
a good choice.
If you are seeing changes of radio or power even only in the
distant future, an external tuner is first choice.
Decide yourself whether to rely on electronics but save time,
e.g. in contests, or to spend 5 secs more on a manual tuner
(and even this may be the other way around pending on device and
software).

I have used the good old Heathkit 2060 Tuner with good results
(keep the coil and roller in good condx),
the Tokyo Hi Power 2000 with better results (fixed coil connections,
but all bands tuneable) and the manual Palstar 5K to perhaps better
results (just new - no experience yet).

The advertising on Palstar is overdoing a bit.
For example the Hi Power 2000 has ball bearings for his axles
but not so on the Palstar (American workmanship I read in advertisings).
Don't go for the old Daiwa 1000 and 2000 semiautomatics.

Hope it helps.

The Motorola switches I've seen all seem to be OEM branded Linemaster
Clipper series switches, look to be either dual 632-S (SPDT), or 635-S
(DPDT) models. So no need to look for anything Motorola specific to get
that
level of ruggedness. And they are rugged, I think you could even drive
your

car over them if you are so inclined.

The Linemaster Clipper type switches also come in a wide treadle
versions.
And pretty much any of them can be found easily on that big auction site.
I

have picked some up over the years and never paid more than about $20 for
any one of them, usually brand new, new condition. For my use I just
screwed

the various Clipper 63x foot switches I have down to a 16x48 inch wood
platform under the radio bench, so they don't move no matter what. The
clipper series are also quite repairable, as the internal switch is just
a

generic microswitch which are readily available from many sources.

Re: [Flexradio] TXOut Delay.

2013-09-02 Thread Lee Mushel
Interesting thread. I suspect that the topic is simpler than people might
want it to be. When I started to use the Flex3000 with a rather heavily
used SB200 some three years ago I wondered about the possibility of mixing
tube and solid-state voltages and was told to not worry about it. But
being a conservative person I bought a Sunlight isolation relay box (no
longer available), never adjusted anything and have never had any problems.
But then I've long felt that people tend to be overly cautious which can
lead to wanting to be taken care of.

50ms is probably around the minimum for an SB-200.

It all depends on the relay(s). In the case of the SB-200 it's an old
open-frame type, very slow. Amps advertised for QSK use often have
vacuum relays, which can switch many times faster.

If you're running SSB, keep in mind that hotswitching the antenna contacts
is the major issue, but not the only one. Some amp designs (not the
SB-200) have a separate relay for the tube bias, which is often buffered
with a simple R/C network. The point is that you shouldn't put drive on
the tube(s) before the operating bias has had time to switch from cut-off
to operate. In the case of the SB-220 for example, the cutoff bias is set
to a unnecessarily high voltage as a matter of convenience, which makes
the situation worse.

I originally started at 100ms, but the delay was noticable-- not long,
but you could kinda tell it was there. I can't tell 50ms at all, except a
little on CW. I start getting faults in my amp with less than 20-25ms of
transmit delay on 80 and 40 meters. 20 meters I could set it at 0ms and
it never faults. Go figure.

Yes. After installing RX2 you will be able to choose the antenna on the

Then just choose RX1 Tap and the second receiver will be listening on

You may want to also check disable RX2 on TX1 transmit so you're not

Is it possible to use a second (independent) receiver with the Flex 5000A

If so, how would I configure it.

Any help is very much appreciated.

I don't agree with Fite very often but I certainly concur this time. And
your wife's sentiments are surely fully justified. In a few weeks I should
have my portable setup using both Tarheel and CrankIR. I don't see how
anyone could operate without the Flex diversity features.

But perhaps no one should consider using a fully-connected 5000A for
portable use. I don't think anyone bothers to label the cables so you will
never get it back together properly after the portable application!I
wouldn't hesitate to double the order and get two 3000's while you're at it.

Re: [Flexradio] Constant database corruption

2013-05-09 Thread Lee Mushel

Gentlemen,

After Flex repaired a hardware fault I found that the 1500 was still acting
very strangely! After considerable staring and much thought with the 2.6.4
installation notes in hand and after having done much diddling with the
recommended adjustments I decided that, indeed, there was a program running
somewhere under Windows 7-64 that was stealing focus from PowerSDR with no
pattern that I could recognize. The comments in this thread are most
helpful since I had found that checking always on top had more effect than
anything else I tried.

It is very true that one can encounter many kinds of noise on the various
bands, but for the most part what I am trying to eliminate, or at least reduce,
is the background hiss to bring out the signal from the noise. The hiss is
relatively constant and can be lowered by using some kind of sampling and
subtraction algorithm. The BHI does this successfully and can make weak
signals much more readable. I would think that this should be achievable in
the PowerSDR software as well with a little bit of further refining.

I for one have no intention of fiddling with every signal I encounter setting
taps and leakage, delay, etc. I work mostly weak signal VHF and UHF and as you
know, signals can come and go very quickly depending on the changing
propagation conditions. There is really not time to be adjusting this and that
to tune in a signal.

My bottom line is, if BHI have been relatively successful in this regard,
then the Flex should be able to do likewise, especially so, considering all the
other wonderful things they have done in software defined radio.

Re: [Flexradio] Active Loop RX Antenna

2013-04-04 Thread Lee Mushel
OK! What a great topic! I definitely like to see real world questions.
First, let me give a bit of info on my own setup. My antenna field is in
a small cornfield that I bought in 1973 and which happens to be about 350
ft. from the shack (basement) fed with some Andrew line. You can see this
if you QRZ me and scroll about 600 ft. west. Last summer I installed a
second Hustler antenna close to the shack with the first Hustler being in
the cornfield. This was done in preparation for the stuff that seems to me
to justify such a setup: dual diversity related features and full duplex.
I like to monitor my own signal. I can insert switchable attenuation to
make this possible. Indeed, otherwise the RX2 on the second Hustler does
not like the 600 watts out of Hustler #1. But I also have to do that when
I monitor my own signal into and out of a repeater using the V/U upgrade and
an E--T transverter into RX2. Indeed, I am neither space nor antenna
poor. And to further comment on Gerald's conservative position, I do
intend to turn back the clock in a few months and install one or more
antenna relays so that I will have the same isolation situation I had in
1959 when such things were taken for granted and everyone had more than a
single box radio!

But at the same time age does work against you and I will admit to having
dumped the full output of my D-700 into the 2 meter connector of the
Flex5000A! Wiping away the tears, I proved to myself that this bit of
idiocy had not damaged the V/U module! I did ask for a comment from Gerald
and he told me that I was just lucky and that such things were not
recommended.

And by the way, I am about to start experimentation using ordinary fax
machines to see if the full duplex feature will allow me to do this and if
anyone has already successfully done this I would sure appreciate a note on
the subject. Bill Cross has told me that this should be possible but that
I have to stay within image allowed band segments.

Re: [Flexradio] Eham review - K1EL VLF Converter and its Use with FlexRadios

2013-03-09 Thread Lee Mushel

Zack,

I certainly wish I had known about the K1EL a few years ago when I first
applied for membership in the MF Experimental Group. I had one of the
first Flex5000As and I thought that with a resource like that plus virtually
unlimited space for an antenna that I would be able to make a contribution
to this effort. And I hurriedly put up a 1,500 ft. beverage and assembled
a 12 ft. dia. loop as well. As is indicated in the review you mention, I
slowly and painfully learned about things like lack of sensitivity at low
frequencies of the 5000A and what broadcast band images were along with the
nature of filters and a lot of other stuff as well! I had put together
K1ELs keyer but somehow had managed to miss the existence of his converter!
I do hope that your posting will save a lot of fellows the pain I went
through since 500 kHz surely isn't anything like 80 meters!

Re: [Flexradio] power vs antenna

2013-02-22 Thread Lee Mushel
I've been watching this thread and also the one concerning scratching and
have been struck by fact that no one seems to really appreciate the
appearance of the back panel of the 5000A and, much worse, no one seems to
think of the antenna as anything but some awful burden to be carried by
anyone who wants to be a ham radio operator!

While I don't think I ever considered the antenna as something to be avoided
if at all possible it was only when I studied the Flex panafall that I
realized that these creations, typically of wire, rod, stainless steel and
aluminum were, in fact, something that deserved appreciation. Really, that
little rectangle on your monitor contains a wealth of interesting
information.

And as I struggled today to overcome some of the last blasts of Wisconsin
winter and thought about the half dozen antenna projects currently in
planning I realized that these notes on the reflector were by people who
were missing one of ham radio's more interesting facets. And all of you
who don't have a cable going to every one of those 5000A connectors have my
sincerest sympathy!

Has anyone put together a presentation on the nature of SDR specifically for

hostility but then asking for a mental transition from mechanical activity and

Maybe the use of a demo only even with the assist of Powerpoint is asking for
too much. It seems that suggesting that software extensions be considered
something other than soundcard modes. Doing so seems to break off teeth in
the mental gears.

substantial pre-introduction downpayment when the radio was still pretty
much only an idea and so I think I've been able to experience just about
everything that has been mentioned this morning! And I can honestly say
that purchase of the radio has never been regretted. If you haven't
experienced it yet, just wait until you hit commercial power line noise and
try to use the panadapter display to illustrate to someone just what's
going on! I had a slight advantage in that I had owned a Squires-Sanders
nice green CRT panadapter so I wasn't starting from scratch but I do feel
that if you are ever tempted to use the Flex display in ordinary
conversation with knob and button people don't expect them to understand
what you are talking about! You might consider these big drifting noise
bumps, when they appear, as an indication that perhaps you need to go out to
inspect your antenna and feed system!

Re: [Flexradio] D-104 and fax with Flex 5K

2012-09-25 Thread Lee Mushel
Well, first, let me expand on my initial casual comments on use of the D-104
and the Flex5000A. I have set things up so that everything is
shielded/properly grounded. I even went so far as to put the 13.8 power
cable in double density shielding. I am trying to learn how to use the full
duplex equipment for fax. I use teltone phone simulators to fool the fax
machines. I use an external audio processor to bring all of the audio
stuff together and then run a balanced line from the processor to the 5000A.
But I'm still not sure just where this noise producing capacitor is. It
might be something that I'm overlooking. I certainly don't know how
bringing a mike into a line in is supposed to work. I wouldn't be
surprised to find all levels turned to max with a lot of hum.

Line in? For a mic level signal? Seems strange. How about the large
impedance mismatch?

number of us have found that
there can be issues using the amplified ones with Flex 5K and
 certain
types of HF amplifiers. The culprit *appears* to be
a cap that discharges into the audio line when the mic is keyed,
 causing
 a spike in the output.

In the case where the HF amplifier has a lot of gain and the op is
driving it with reduced power from the 5K,
the spike can be very substantial. Maybe not enough to damage
 equipment,
 but certainly enough for the
spike to go far over the legal limit - even though normal SSB
 modulation
 with the same mic and

 GU-74B
 tetrodes, (grid driven) and the
 other is a cathode-driven single 8877. I haven't tried it with my
 prototype YC156 - I can only imagine.

No doubt someone could fiddle with the D-104 output amp cap, the
 leaf
switches or any number of things to come
up with a fix. Perhaps even swamping the output with a fairly
 low-value
resistor might work, especially since the amp
boards in the mics have far more gain than necessary to drive the
 mic
input of the 5K. My excuse is that I haven't
gotten A Round Tuit. Considering I've sold off my boat anchors and
 so no
longer use the D-104's regularly, I
 may not get there.

Re: [Flexradio] U/V sub-audible tone problem

2012-09-22 Thread Lee Mushel

Gentlemen,

Out of respect for Flex Radio's quality I fasten one of my retired Hi Fi
systems to the 5000A so I can hear below 40 Hz and any carrier noise is
quite apparent (which also makes it easier to compensate for my age-related
hearing decline) and noticed this on one of the local repeaters. I made
several nasty comments during QSOs with others and, magically, the problem
went away. Of course, that is only my solution to one special problem.
Is this limited to only one CTCSS tone? More than one repeater? I live
where I have to contend with three tones.

I've never noticed the issue here, I do a lot of SAT work with SO-50

uses 67Hz.
I'll try listening to some of the repeaters.

Other than RX equalization (which am not sure functions with FM) I know of
no settings.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 1500/Amplifier

2012-08-30 Thread Lee Mushel

Gentlemen,

I would like to point out that there are other English words and perfectly
legitimate attitudes that cover and perhaps offer better descriptions of
thing discussed in this thread. Disaster, for example might be more
commonly thought of as a jumbled pile found on the ground that had passed
much previous history while elevated and thus might be discounted by many
experienced radio amateurs as simply adequately large. The ALC: would
be better considered as insurance. I can distinctly remember the fear I
experienced a few years back when the Heathkit manual warned to tune
quickly to avoid damage to the tubes. Today's inconsiderate nature of
solid state won't even allow tune quickly to be replaced by instantly
tune.

We sometimes call this risk taking. This is something that I highly
approve of even though I have carelessly connected the two meter connector
on the back of my 5000A directly to the antenna connector of the D-700
after which I pressed the Kenwood PTTI know that life is uncertain and
often unfair.

A few years ago one of my neighbor took me to task over the 950 feet of
extension cord I used to illuminate holiday lights. Lee, you have voltage
drop. I asked him if the lights were on. He admitted they were and I
explained to him that either he would have to accept the fact that they were
operating with somewhat less than 100 volts or there would be no lights at
all. He was puzzled.

As is often said, Lighten up!

Many amps rely on that ALC connection to allow them to cut back on
drive in the event of a malfunction such as an intermittent flaky
antenna feedline. A momentarily open/shorted antenna could be very
bad news for some amps under normal drive.

Some argue that you don't really need ALC. I suspect those guys never
had an antenna disaster.

Not to be rude, but huh?

Roger...I've been QRO since back in the 80s and have never used an
ALC circuit...just watch your levels and you'll be OK without ALC.

Patrick,

If the 5000A is going to be your first real exposure to SDR I respectfully
suggest that before worrying about playing back files you read every page in
the manual. If you've already done that I suggest you go back and re-read
every page in the manual. Then, finally, go back and read it a third time
but this time stop at every unfamiliar word and go to the Flex knowledge
base and read that! And then give some thought about exactly where you are

Subject: [Flexradio] IQ data files

I am looking for a source of downloadable IQ data files to play back with
PSDR pending my back order being filled for the F5K unit. I would have
sworn I saw a source but cannot locate it now. I would like to exercise and
test my PSDR install in advance. Getting a little experience with operation
in advance wouldn’t hurt and could make for a smooth transition into “The
Future”, not only for me but plenty of others. This might be a way to
attract potential owners and boost sales for FlexRsdio. If Flex supplied
download files for people to use they could test drive the FlexRadio,
become addicted and want to buy.

Some sort of incentive program would encourage Flex owners to “spread the
word” with even greater enthusiasm than now and downloadable files to
exercise PSDR would be a useful sales tool. Some of the signals in USB,
LSB, and AM could be audio sales pitches. There are other obvious
positive reinforcing ideas to numerous to list but I think I have made my
point.

Now for my reward... I need some downloadsable !Q files for playback with
PSDR.

TIA for any consideration from any source (hint hint)

good question but mine always has and since I have had the case open and

But that would be work and since it doesn't seem to seriously overheat I

[Flexradio] Digital Emergency Communications

2012-04-16 Thread Lee Mushel
Gentlemen:

I know that all flexers have been following the development the FCC's interest
in the dictate that congress gave them by suggesting that ideas be developed
for better protecting/utilizing ham radio and I think everyone had for the
public in times of emergency in mind. I see no way but digital utilization
for the new 630 meter band. I have a project underway myself in an attempt to
contribute in some small way.

And if you go to QRZ today you will find the digital topic under discussion.
It was almost a year ago now that a posting on a flex reflector asked if anyone
was actively using SDR for emergency communications. I don't think that a two
meter handheld net for bicycle rides and parades was what he had in mind.
I've been agitating for a reasonable Resource Type for ham radio for three or
four years now without much success. Last year I asked the President of the
ARRL why the League wasn't taking an active roll in this and she pretended to
not know what I was talking about.

My mailperson just delivered the two new League publications: The ABCs of
Software Defined Radio and Get on the Air with HF Digital. I haven't
looked at them yet but I have high hopes!

Let's face it. If we want to protect our spectral rights we will do something
positive.

Re: [Flexradio] Unusual Issue

2012-02-27 Thread Lee Mushel

Gentlemen,

Over the past three years or so I've read dozens of PC-PowerSDR events and
I think that at one time or another I've experienced nearly all. If they
don't persist I have always assumed that they are the result of infrequent
interactions between the software, firmware and maybe even the infrequent
cosmic ray. I don't let them bother me and I certainly never let them
detract from the never-ending enjoyment I get from these radios. I doubt
that such things will ever disappear entirely and forever. Especially in
light of the fact that we expect, and yes, demand that the features and
capabilities of these radios change and, hopefully, dramatically improve
constantly.

Since I have chosen to have separate computers for my 5000A, 3000 and SDR-IQ
I suspect that I have fewer of these problems than most. And the fact
that none of these machines are connected to the internet is another factor
that I don't doubt makes my life more serene!

I do monitor the CPU usage fairly closely and know perfectly well that
forced upgrades of the machines is not too far away but my habits don't put
too much pressure on performance in that regard.

But there are times that I worry that our complaints affect decisions of
folks who are only recently considering the purchase of SDR equipment. And
if you are one of those I would hope that you would clearly understand that
denying yourself of something that Flex calls excitement because of these
malfunction descriptions would really be a shame. And that you will be the
poorer if you take them too seriously!

Re: [Flexradio] Audio Rack and the 5000

2012-02-12 Thread Lee Mushel
Finally!I was beginning to wonder when someone would remember the very
clear audio importance trail left by John Basilotto (SK)! I once asked
John why he was so concerned with audio and he explained that this was a
special interest for him going back to prehistoric times and that explained
why he was so concerned with audio quality. Some early devotees will
recall that the developing PowerSDR didn't always have the elaborate audio
processing that it finally appeared with and John was the first to suggest
that an audio processor might be something that people would want for their
Flex5000s. And he also brought True Audio TrueRTA to our attention at
the same time. I will admit that I have never used either the processor or
the Audio software until now when I am going to start to see if I can
develop the capability for emergency communications where I can walk up to
the receptionist of the served agency, hand her a pair of cables, one with
120VAC and the other with a telephone connector and tell her to plug her fax
system in. I will feel successful if I can eliminate all need for
commercial power, the internet, and all telephone systems. Full duplex is
just another example of Gerald's incredible insight!

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 5000 Speakers

2012-01-20 Thread Lee Mushel
Indeed, Gary, this is one of the most popular questions on Flex reflectors.
I would like to give you a general answer based, as always, on my own
personal experiences. In the early '50s one of the electronics magazines
published an article on a speaker system the author called the sweet
sixteen. It used sixteen four inch general replacement speakers of the
type found at that time in table model radios. As a 14 year old newly
interested in high fidelity I built one and while at the time I thought it
was wonderful of course the theory behind it is questionable and the results
quite horrible.

But to answer your question, I don't know why more people don't simply go
into their store of retired music reproduction systems and attach to their
radios. I did that with my Hammarlund HQ-180 long ago and not so long ago
took a SONY ES receiver and today Video 1 is the Flex 3000 and Video 2
is the Flex 5000A. I even built a take off of the sweet 16 and built a
sweet 8 using far better drivers! My point is that nearly any stereo
components that can be assembled to function as a sound system will be
overkill as far as speakers suitable for communications receiver use is
concerned.

Anything more really just an interesting facet of our ham radio hobby.
Anything that interests and satisfies you is certainly OK.

Gentlemen,

I must admit that I don't understand any of this. With the bands as
crowded as they are these days I find myself receiving with the filtering
set at 2.4 kHz. Readability is very good. I will have to dig out my
1950's copies of QST and see just why we decided to use single sideband in
the first place. Now we watch movies on a 4 inch screen with often
non-descript earbuds and wonder if I have wasted my money on these speaker
systems with close to 200 drivers and with a screen that allows me to see
Aaron Rogers at much larger than full size. I think Yul said it best when
he commented T'is a puzzlement!

AM. The

fact that a transmitter uses high level plate modulation doesn't guarantee

that it sounds good.

That is certainly true but I would assume that anyone thinking of doing
HiFi AM is going to properly treat the low-level audio and modulation
stages anyway. That means getting rid of cathode bias with electrolytic
bypass caps and replacing it with fixed-bias, increasing interstage
coupling caps to improve low-frequency response, changing filters, etc.
The

key here is that high-level modulation tends to be a better starting point
for a quality AM signal.

In fact, most of the 100W class AM transmitters from
the 50's and 60's sound terrible until they are modified. Most of them
had

restricted audio bandwidth and horrible things like clippers and high/low
pass audio filters.

Well, that kinda goes without saying. They were definitely not HiFi but
that is easy to rectify.

But maybe I just take that stuff for granted as I spent a significant
portion of my life designing, building, and modifying tube HiFi gear.

Re: [Flexradio] Fan noise

Gentlemen,

I think we have enough opinions on the subject of fan noise now so that
conclusions can be drawn and we can move on to other subjects like 1500 CW
problems, what microphone to use and several others of your choice. I will
admit to being fascinated by some of the comments since I have had no
ability to hear anything above 14 kHz since qualifying with the U.S. Rifle,
caliber 30 M-1, Sir some 55 years ago. I have always marveled at the
quietness of the 3000 and 5000A. I can detect no fan noise whatever. But
I am certain that with some 13 fan-containing devices in the shack there
must be some detectable sound. But I've decided that the most reasonable
course of action to take is to ignore the possibility since such worry would
be as silly and pointless as concentrating on similar noise coming from the
XYL that I've been married to for some 49 years!

I find this reflector to be most entertaining and informative.

Ah, Now I see! Silly me had referred to page 3 of the manual which is
obviously incorrect! I think you should enter a suggestion that people can
easily find the front by looking at the bumpy side.

And I would assume that you can use the red and black wires to charge

If anyone questions the fact that Flex Radio reflectors promote the best
aspects of the ham radio hobby this thread should put that to rest. I dare

But I will start out slowly and first have him sit down at a Model 28 KSR

Lee,
You could suggest that, but then again, you could probably take less abuse
from a wood chipper! :-)

In all honesty, I think this is a simple matter of perspective based on
model (1500/3000/5000) and point of view. I wouldn't worry about it as it
really doesn't matter. Call it what you will. I particularly like your
reference to the bumpy stuff and don't really mind what anyone calls it,
as your characterization is clear and colorfull! :-)

Enjoy the radio and the hobby and above all, don't sweat the small stuff.
The Flex and other SDR-based radios, even the ones with knobs and other
bumpy stuff are all really cool when compared to some of the vintage
stuff

that we may have used previously.

Re: [Flexradio] Yeasu microphone

2011-12-02 Thread Lee Mushel
You know, Ross, when I first received my 3000 back in the days when the
earth was young, I took one look at that mike connector, remembered when a
mike connector had a single eyelit in the center and a nice spring strain
relief, shook my head, scratched several times and went to Radio Shack. I
bought some of those RJ connectors and their best quality crimper, thirty
feet of eight conductor cable, a metal box and an eight terminal strip and
then went home to find the coil of braid that I normally use for grounding
stuff. I squeezed the braid open so I could push a suitable length of the
cable through, saving the rest for future similar applications, and then
attached one of those goofy RJ connectors to one end. I now had a well
shielded cable that I could ground as wisdom demands. Then I drilled a few
holes in that metal box so that all of my existing mike connectors could be
attached as desired. I do go from D-104 to Pilots head set and even one of
those shiny gold things from Heil. I took a piece of paper and very
carefully identified each pin and then fastened the now nicely shielded
cable from the 3000 to the respectively numbered terminals on the strip
which I had mounted in the metal box. Then I found all the manuals for my
mikes and wired the appropriate connectors to the desired screws on that
terminal strip. Yes, I did leave out the fact that the D-104 and pilots
head set do require some trivial additional work. And just in case you've
forgotten where some of that information might be found I suggest you look
on page 65 of the April 2010 QST.

Suddenly I realized that perhaps I had made a universal adapter and never
again would I have to beg some piece of metal to be nice to me.

This will not solve the most difficult microphone problem that I have
encountered so far: how does one keep the cat from chewing off the foam
thing on the mike?

Just realized I've had the Flex-5000a for three years, and I am still
having

fun!

Initially I needed some upgrading having been accustomed to knocking off
the rough edges with software to make things work. My first PC for the
Flex-5000a wasn't much good because I ignored the recommendations and
basically did a poor job of preparing for the SDR software and Firewire
needs.

Once I assembled an appropriate setup all was well.

During the time I have had the radio I have lost track of the number of
software updates and added features. Each new arrival has been a treat.

I've had a blast using the radio from Topband to 6m, mostly SSB with a
fair

bit of digital.

Have met some of the nicest people in fellow Flex owners and the Flex
staff.

Even though the radio really doesn't need it, I egged myself on to whip up
a

Rb-Frequency Source with help from a Flex-Radio volunteer.

I've slowly expanded the capabilities of the software running, and my
skill

in using the programs.

You can see my two monitor setup at QRZ or my web blog website.

It has been like having a wonderful self-upgrading radio - and lots of
fun!

None of the other radios or gear that I have had have been this much fun!

Kudos to the Flex team and thank you!

Re: [Flexradio] new 3000 with problems?

2011-11-22 Thread Lee Mushel

Brett,

I know that a lot of people who are considering the purchase of a Flex SDR
read the reflector for a time first. And while it is unfortunate that you
are having the trouble you describe I would hate to have someone deprive
himself of the pleasure those radios provide because of your experience.

As one of those people who seems to repeatedly accidentally shock his
equipment I can testify that my 3000 and 5000A have tolerated some really
serious abuse I heaped on them without damage.. For example, I have dumped
the full output of a D700 into the antenna BNC of the V/U upgrade and the
radio kept on ticking! And in an equally idiotic stunt put 23 volts of
DC into the power connector without negative results.

I will admit that some care has to be taken where stray RF is concerned and
I have had problems but they all disappeared with some additional care in
grounding, cable routing and a few more common mode ferrite chokes.

And I'm going to say that my Asian radios have gone back to the manufacturer
several times for repair but not the Flex's and I am one of the earliest
non-beta test owners of the radios! My own experience has been that they
are tough, well made and trouble-free stuff. I don't think I have to
comment on their performance on the air!

I have a bucket load of clamp on ferrites from work, and have them all over
all the cables on the flex and the computer.
The computer seems to be doing fine, but no matter what I do I can not get
more then 1/2 power out of the 3000.

I had forgotten to ground the computer, but put one on after the glitch.
I reset the database, and changed the option to show the flex icon in the
system tray, and that pops up when the radio is turned on.

Into a dummy load, on ssb, am, fm, max power out is 50 watts.
Current draw is 10 amps max, so it looks like I lost one of the output
transistors.

This is the same amp I drove with the flex 5000, the icom 756 pro3, etc.
At first I thought the computer reset because the power kind of sags when
the amp kicks on, but I am not sure.
Everything still works (even into the amp) but the 3000 output is half
what it should be.

It looks like I will be contacting flex to send the 3000 back.

I so wanted this to work, as I love the flex receivers, and now I may be
stuck with something yucky like a pro3

(for the band scope).

Or, I could order output transistors and fix it, but it might just happen
again.
The amp only takes about 8 watts to drive it, and if the devices blow out
at that power, its too fragile to use...

What I do not know is exactly what happened, did the computer have issues
that did something to the output devices, did the brown out cause it, rf?,
or what...

You will notice that the Dow-Key relay has a separate set of contacts. The
purpose of these contacts is to key the rig AFTER the coax relay has

Re: [Flexradio] Enhancement Requests

2011-11-04 Thread Lee Mushel

Leon,

I can honestly say that if SDR and specifically Flex Radio hadn't been
pushed in front of me I might not have discovered this fascinating stuff!
Enhancements? Well, I guess they are nice but I know that every time I
push that little button on the front of my radios I will be only a few
seconds away from learning of some feature or capability that I hadn't
realized was there. You know, I made the mistake a year or so ago and said
that even though I had the Flex5000 almost from moment one I still didn't
feel I had mastered all of it's potential. At least a half dozen people
told me that if I had a radio for several years and had not completely
mastered it I must be a Citizens Band Person. I can honestly say that the
potential built into those radios, as they are and not what they might
become, has kept me interested in the hobby. I don't remember who first
said it, maybe it was Gerald, but he described the radio as an electrical
instrument. This opens the door to using it in unique ways that can best
be thought of as experimentation. If you look at the cubby where my 5000A
lives you might wonder why elecraft transverters sit on top of it and then
ask why I didn't buy the V/U upgrade. Well, I have the V/U upgrade but
there are other signal aspects that I wanted to examine that made multiple
receivers desirable. Should I have put in a request for a dedicated V/U
RX2? And I might decide to feed the SDR-IQ with a serial connection from
the TS-480SAT using SDR-console or a recent variation of SpectraVue. Of
course, with a click I may shift to some other interest using N4PY. Wait
for an enhancement request to be satisfied? Not me. There's a big
wonderful world out there.

Subject: [Flexradio] Band/ freq changes after shutoff

Folks, I noticed after upgrading to V.2.2.3 about a month or so ago,
that
the band and frequency changes from the previous operating session. When
I

fire up the next time, the rig is on a different band and freq...As an
example, I'm on 14.300 MHz and then shut down PowerSDR and turn off the
 rig.
The next day the band and freq is somewhere else (ie:40 meters). I
believe

 this behavior is pretty consistent.

Any ideas? Would resetting to factory defaults fix the anomaly?

2011-09-21 Thread Lee Mushel

Gentlemen,

I do want to add my comments on Dudley's performance. I am fairly well
convinced that he is independently wealthy since I am sure that Gerald
doesn't pay him as much as he is worth. From my experience, I am certain
that Dudley works full time and probably has a reclining chair somewhat
different from the usual in that it flushes so he never has to leave his
desk. And I don't think he does! You can ask for help any time of the
day and he is there! And what is most amazing is the fact that he knows
how to help with your problem---no matter what it is! I hope the rumors are
true that there will soon be a double life-sized Dudley statue in front of
the Flex offices.

Re: [Flexradio] Flex 3K and 5K software shut down QRO.

2011-09-13 Thread Lee Mushel
All right, back to history. In that period before time began and the only
Flex radio was the 1000 and we still had (but didn't know it) another three
or four months before the 5000A would begin ordinary shipping there was much
discussion on the reflector on various topics: all speculation and mostly
forgotten today. For example, at one point the equalizers had not been
mentioned as a part of PowerSDR but thought to be recommended and thus
there is now such a separate box in my shack that has never been connected.
And then there was the discussion on the supply voltage accuracy needed by
this marvelous rig and since one opinion was given that plus one tenth and
minus two tenths from 13.8 would be a good idea you will now find a one
farad capacitor in my system. Now, when it came to this strange new fire
wire thing that no one knew anything about the discussion included
admonishment to avoid cheap cables. And I think I was among the first to
find this Granite Digital doubly shielded cable on line and since it also
cost an arm and a leg I thought it must be good and purchased it---several
months before the radio arrived at the door and I also told John Basilotto
that I had found this marvelous product and the next thing I knew it was
being recommended. I have used it since day one and have not had any RFI
but I will say that there is very little distance between the radio and
computer (two feet). Of course, by the time the 3000 was in the pipeline
there had been enough complaints and Flex had started to ship their cable
with the radio and that is what I use with the 3000. Again, no RFI
problems but the computer-radio distance is short and I do believe in
grounding as best I can. And I do continue to feel guilty that I have these
exciting radios that others don't have for reasons of price or ignorance.

I had to point out a contrary instance. The kicker is I am using the

stock

Firewire cable Flex ships with the radio is pretty darned good with only
ferrite at one end.

2011-09-12 Thread Lee Mushel
Jim's advice is good. I would add that there are some really good (hundred
page plus) postings on the web that you should read and also google the
topic common mode RF chokes or ferrites. That multitude of cables that
you undoubtedly hung from the back of the 5000A, while a blessing, can
easily become a curse!

In my own case I have several hundred dollars worth of those clip on ferrite
chokes and, at one recent count, 23 standard 8 ft. plated steel ground rods
and even then, I find that from time to time the cat moves a cable and I can
see a little RF!

A week ago a fellow I'm elmering asked me a question that I'm sure he
thought was simple: Lee, how should I ground my station. I thought
about that a couple of days before answering him. To do a really proper
job you have to start when you build the house. Everything else is a
compromise and experiment!

It's just part of ham radio!

 Frank,

That definitely sounds like RF feedback. The most likely culprit is
 the
firewire cable. I had the same issue running my amp with my
 FLEX-5000A.

First, make certain that your PC is connected to the shack ground.
After
all, it is better than half of the radio.

If you are using the stock firewire cable that came with the rig,
replace
 it
with the one by Granite Digital. Is costs about $40 is availabel
 from

 Flex.

Finally, if you still are having problems, add ferrite chokes at each
end
 of
 the firewire cable.

The above steps eliminated my RF feedback problems entirely. Now I can
run
1kW on all bands with no issues.

Tim Dudley,

Would you please ask the programmers to check operation of the 5000A with
all options installed. I run 22 on the 3000 so I don't have any
problems. I strongly suspect that if I had the new knob and button thing I
wouldn't have noticed all of these things but I would really like to have
the audio functions work in a 5000A with RX2 and V/U! And I'm not
complaining about having to hit the start button twice to avoid the
pulsingjust the tremendous difficulty in finding settings that will
allow me to hear a 2M FM station without having my ear next to a speaker
cone.

Maybe we could start with being able to button click the squelches on and
off.

I will say that the new software is easy to install and that process went
quickly and without a hitch---I think.

As I've told you many times, my 5000A is connected to the exact same Toshiba
lap top bought at Best Buy running Vista that John Basilotto first used to
demo the radio when it was first introduced. Sure hope you didn't throw

As a very almost exclusively digi-mode operator, and only being a ham for

frequency.

I don't even get what it's supposed to mean. Honest!

Re: [Flexradio] Silence must meant something.

2011-05-26 Thread Lee Mushel

Guy,

I suppose it was about a year after I got my 5000A that this terrible QRN
appeared. Of course, it is your responsibility to show that the source
isn't actually inside your QTH and I did this by operating the rig from
battery power and turning off the main breaker. I didn't get much help from
the ham community except for a visit by a retired power company maintenance
foreman who was also a radio amateur. I started out by showing him what
the noise looked like on the panadapter and after that I could see I had
more work to do and he said, Let me listen to it. After listening for
about three seconds he announced that it was one of the metal oxide varistor
lightning arrestors (in rural areas there are a lot of these things) And I
don't think it's very far away. My rural electric co-op buys it's power
from a company headquartered about 70 miles away. I called the co-op and
they gave me the number of the engineering department of the supplier and I
called and told them about the situation. The engineer said he'd look
into it and I was fairly sure that his words were all I would ever get!
Boy, was I wrong. A few days later a very large tracked vehicle with
bucket showed up. As I soon found out, this was necessary because the
defective system was located in what was almost a swamp in a valley on my
property and very hard to access but they did and I've never had any more
QRN!

I guess what I want to say is that my experience seems counter to that of
many (but maybe not) and that the power company reacted quickly to fix the
problem after I was able to assure them that the trouble was, indeed,
theirs! They do have equipment to find this sort of thing!

Indeed! The computers run OK but you do have to do a lot of work to quiet
those inverter generators! I tie mine to the shack ground field. Recall
that at my age I have no intention of running around. If we have a local
emergency there are four dogs, and old woman and a bunch of cats that have
first call on my services. So I can take care of problems like these. I
know that a lot of public parks etc. have people around who frown when you
start driving 8 ft. ground rods.

 So here's a thought I had today. I have a perfectly good 12 volt
automobile battery here, why not operate the 1500 off battery power
during field day? Then I got to thinking, I don't have a lap top and
the PC the 1500 runs with is connected to the AC mains so I looked up
the rules. A class E station is one characterized as a home station
running off battery power for the transmit and receive gear. So what
do you think, would I be a Class E station? Or does the fact that
technically the PC is part of the radio and is running off the mains
 violate the spirit of things?

IMO, using commercial power for any part of the control system for the
radio
takes you out of the Class E category. If the computer system does not
eat
too much power, you could use a 12 volt DC to 120 volt AC inverter to
power
the computer and monitor, or you might be able to borrow a laptop for
your

FD ops. Many laptops will operate just fine directly from 12 volts, but
they usually will not charge the battery. You may need a charged battery
to
boot the laptop, then switch to external power. Or, just use a small 2
volt
DC to 120 volt AC inverter to run the laptop.

Re: [Flexradio] Mic

2011-04-26 Thread Lee Mushel
I do have a suggestion since I haven't bothered to pull the foam out of my
flightcoms (the mike is simple, see QST April 2010 page 65) But it would
seem that some of those headsets might be stereo already. If not I see no
reason why a person couldn't simply simply rewire the headset to suit! I
certainly agree that it is desirable to use stereo. But anyone with some
cable, a small phillips screwdriver and an American Beauty soldering iron
should be able to do any rewiring needed. Of course, if you are one of the
current generation of hams who can't solder and whose knowledge of
electronics is limited to what can be found in a license manual you might
have trouble.

A more serious problem for me is the fact that my cat chewed off the mike
foam.

One comment about using aviation-type headsets with the Flex radios. All
of
them that I am aware of are mono earphones. You really do not get the

benefit of the receive signal unless you have stereo headphones. The
ability to pan the main RX signal to one ear the MUltiRX (or RX2) signal
to the other ear is invaluable when working a pileup.

Re: [Flexradio] RX2 / HFRIO board

2011-03-02 Thread Lee Mushel

Tim, et al.,

I must admit to being surprised a few weeks ago when a tremendous crack of
thunder awoke me from my usual stupor. Normally, in the months from late
March to November, all antennas are disconnected unless I am actually
operating. And even then the door is often opened and the sky scanned
carefully. The shack has no windows. Tim's feelings on this subject
closely parallel those of my own.

In my shack, in addition to that power master disconnect switch, there is a
one farad capacitor (with additional .01 across that). If you examine the
copper lined cubby where the 5000A resides, you will now find a
value-switched 80 dB attenuator first in line with RX2 thence to a six
position (I wish I had 12) selector switch to support all the sources I want
to play with. This is a recent addition. I guess I was just getting too
nervous about separation between my antennas. While I hate to say it, I do
believe it is unreasonable to expect these wonderful Flex radios to take
unlimited abuse.

That said, when I first got my V/U upgraded radio back from Texas I
accidentally sent full output from my D-700 into the 2M BNC connector.
After recovering full mobility when I realized what I'd done I could
scarcely control myself while I set up to test for damage. I couldn't find
any, once again a testament to the ruggedness of the 5000A, but after Gerald
expressed satisfaction with my good luck he commented that Flex couldn't
recommend that I repeat that!

If you don't know what is meant by ground field or perimeter ground I
strongly recommend you browse a bit and download at least one of the several
really good How to protect papers that are out there!

My first guess would be that your issue is not transmitting 100 watts with

Re: [Flexradio] Finding Noise

2010-12-23 Thread Lee Mushel

Frank, et al.:

When the sudden appearance of noise made use of all the HF frequencies
impossible I naturally did what all able-bodied flexers would do: I sent
panadapter photos of the problem to all the sources I thought could help me
including the ARRL. I received absolutely no help. Then I noticed that the
noise was worst when using antennas closest to the highway---in other words,
closest to the power line. I then worked my way into the power company
and while doing this had a visitor to the shack who was a retired
maintenance supervisor. I showed him the noise on the panadapter and I
could tell he didn't know what to do with this information. But he asked
that I let him listen. He immediately told me that this was noise from
an MOV and not very far away. A little later I got a phone call from the
power company engineering department. I told him what I had learned and was
told it would be looked into.

A few days later a very large tracked vehicle appeared which was used to
access the steep valley and swampy area. The trouble was gone! No
problem dealing with the utility. I know that most people complain about a
lack of interest/activity from power companies but I certainly didn't find
that to be true.

I work for a large electric utility as an interference investigator. I make
my living finding all sorts of powerline-based and non-powerline based
interference sources. This is the Flex Radio reflector and not an
interference location list so I will try to be brief.

I realize that my comment here won't stop the practice of whacking,
kicking,
bumping or tampering with utility equipment but I am compelled to say
this:

Don't tamper with utility equipment. Resist the urge to take baseball
bats,

sledgehammers, etc to any utility pole. It's both dangerous and illegal.

You do not have the right to do anything to a utility pole. How would you
feel if I, as the utility's interference investigator, came to your house
and whacked your tower with a sledgehammer? I'm sure you wouldn't
appreciate

that nor is it legal for me to do so.

It's dangerous because one good whack could jar something loose and hit
you

or, worse, injure you. I work with line crews quite frequently to correct
problems that cause interference. There is only one circumstance where a
hammer is used on a pole. Staples are hammered in to secure the bond
(ground) wire that runs down most poles to ground rods buried under the
pole. When line crew members hammer a pole they do so only after verifying
that nothing will fall on them. Hydraulic tools are used to tighten nuts
but again only when it is deemed safe to do so.

In my experience, whacking a pole rarely produces any useful result. Real
direction finding yields the fastest results. Transformers are rare
offenders (at least in my area.) Loose hardware, faulty lightning
arrestors

and broken bond (ground) wires are the most frequent offenders. When the
interference can be heard at VHF frequencies, the source is usually easy
to

locate. When the source can't be heard above 7 or 8 MHz, it becomes more
challenging and often indicates a faulty transformer. Still none of my
direction finding techniques include kicking, whacking or jarring
equipment.at least not without a hard hat and a qualified eye.

Seek the assistance of the utility. Try to work with them to DF the
source.

Leave the whacking, shaking, tinkering and other physical effort to
qualified line crews trained in doing such work safely. If the utility is
unresponsive or too sluggish in resolving your issue, contact your state
regulatory agency to motivate them to focus their efforts more
effectively.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all!

Re: [Flexradio] [SPAM] Re: Flex-1500 external equipment sequencingissue...

2010-09-17 Thread Lee Mushel

John,

I want to be sure I understand what you are saying because I think what you
want to happen is something that I made possible because I am fond of the
little PTT mike that came with my TS-480! I don't particularly like my
Heil and since I am in a semi-prone position when operating I don't like
foot switches, either. I simply made a breakout box with an eight
terminal strip in it and mounted separate output jacks on the box for the
radios/applications I want to use. The PTT mike switch can be, and is at
present, connected to the correct pin on the Flex3000. If I ever decide to
implement some plan using a transverter I would simply bring that line out
of the box separately to the sequencer and take the proper delayed output
from the sequencer back in to my breakout box and apply it to the mike jack
on the Flex5000A although I am aware that in that specific case there may be
more than one way to key the radio. Like you, I tend to stay away from
accessory jacks. Would this work in your case or is there something I
don't understand.

Hi Brian,

Acutally, that exact feature is standard on my TS-790A and I believe many
other transceivers employ a TX Inhibit input on their accessory jacks as
well. I don't use it, but it is available.

73

John N6VMO

I think you are complaining that you can't assert the PTT on the radio
and
have it routed to the sequencer yet the radio doesn't actually key up
until
the sequencer sends it a separate PTT signal. That is nice and it would
be

great if Flex did something like that. But it sure isn't standard.

What would you do if you were using a Yaecomwood?

had a particularly vicious one where the thunder did not boom but produced
a series of very loud crackling discharges with the light synchronized with

Yes, Michael, and you can add astronomy to model railroading! If you want

admit that some of these complainers are almost as old as I am. In

You know I can understand someone being miffed at how long a preorder
takes if they were actually charged for the merchandise at the time of
preorder but Flex doesn't do that. Common sense would tell you that they
are just as anxious to get the radio to you as you are to have it. All
those preorders are money in limbo for them. You guys are lucky you don't
also have model railroading as a hobby. Preordering models is the norm
there. Most are limited runs so if you don't preorder, you don't get one
and sometimes it takes over a year or more before you finally see the
merchandise. Oh, and if enough folks don't preorder, they simply don't
make the model.

Gentlepeople,

As a member of the ARRL Experimental 600 meter group I don't have the luxury
of using just any software. One of the specified pieces is Multipsk. So I
was especially intrigued by a comment by another Flexer that he was under the
impression from other contacts that Multipsk has good features but also has a
steep learning curve. Steep learning curves are an absolute anathema to me.
This is further complicated by the fact that I intensely dislike reading
instruction manuals and that several-inch-thick pile of these things I've
downloaded in just the past few months for software alone is discouraging.
Getting 2.0 beta running on both the 3000 and 5000A with separate computers,
while challenging, is nothing compared to my trouble with Multipsk.

It sudden occurred to me to ask members of this marvelous group who might have
had some experience with MultiPSK if they have any helpful household hints
that might make my task easier.

(Beatles) last month ... again the audio guys had 7506's, I could go on
and on about whose/who ..but the 7506 are light, the sound is true with NO
COLOR added . Today so many headphones are colored to make them sound
good...but in essence the 7506's work very well in a ham application ...
also when you get Pad Fatigue, you can order replacement pads from
SonyPad should be changed yearly as the distance from the transducer
to your canal is important!!
And when your not using them hang them with the pads turned out.so the
foam can regain its memory

Just my $.05 cents...

Re: [Flexradio] need more treble in my voice

2010-05-21 Thread Lee Mushel
Further to a parallel thread, I think it was Tim who said that the delay in
2.0 release was caused by an increase in Eric's family. I trust there is
no problem there. But I fear the real reason is the lack of space in the
Downloads box on the left of the home page! Perhaps Gregg could move the
horizontal line and Buy Now notes up slightly to eliminate this barrier.
