RE: [newbie] CPU question
I have a BP6, with 466 celerons in it - clocked at 75 Mhz each rather than 66. This gives me a pair of 525 MHz little fellas. They run fine under 2.2.13 (from MDK 6.5) without a hitch. They did cause kernel messages under the 2.4 kernels APIC CPU1 error or suchlike. Dropping them down from the 78 Mhz they were at to 75 made them a little happier. Overall, I think you'll be very lucky to get a pair of CPU's which will be stable at 100 Mhz. As you have the BP6, you can increase the bus speed in little jumps - just keep going up until they either get too hot or start being flaky. Then back down one and things should be OK. You have got some decent cooling fans in there haven't you Steve Flynn NOP Data Migration Ops Analyst * 01603 687386 -Original Message- From: civileme [SMTP:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, August 31, 2001 10:37 AM To: Pascal Goguey; [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject:Re: [newbie] CPU question On Friday 31 August 2001 01:59, Pascal Goguey wrote: Hello, I am running Mandrake on a Abit motherboard (Abit BP6) with dual celeron. RE: [newbie] Not prompted for other cd's during installation
ISTR, that under low memory circumstances, 6.5 wouldn't prompt for the 2nd CD either. Memory (pardon the pun) is hazy on this as I only read about it on this very list about 1.5 years ago. I think 32 meg was OK with 6.5 though - people installing with 16 and 24 meg were having grief. However, it seems you need a pretty powerful machine to run the GNOME desktop. I've got a 900MHz/512MB, and running GNOME is a dog compared to KDE, it's too bad really. I'm sure a lot has to do with having a slow hard-drive but I'm surprised how much disk access there is while running GNOME. I have a Pentium II 350 and GNOME runs fine for me. KDE doesn't run badly, but not as well as GNOME. If you have a 900MHz system and GNOME is still slow, then there's something wrong. I have 1.2 MHz with 512MB and GNOME runs slightly faster than KDE as well, but it seems to crash (freeze up) when I open too many apps. It's probably some conflicts somewhere that I havn't discovered or the fact that it's not the latest version. This is the one that came with 8.0 (from cheapbytes). I am planning on getting the powerpack when 8.1 comes out so I haven't uograded, but thanx to Shridhar whose comments about GNOME made me curious enough to give it a second try (I tried it several times before and had given up). Due to his advice in a previous post about GNOME, I know now that I will like it much better when I learn how to make it work properly. It is much more configurable than KDE. By the way Sridhar, is GNOME compensating you for the plugs? (LOL). I wish! I started using GNOME back in the 1.0.x days, when Enlightenment was the default WM. It was way ahead (IMHO) of the latest KDE version at the time, 1.1.x, which I found to be too Windows-like (i.e. too much like what I was escaping from). I learned to really appreciate the immense configurability of GNOME + Enlightenment/Sawfish, configuring my keyboard so that I seldom have to touch the mouse. While I still like KDE, I still feel that it's geared too far towards the Windows crowd. It may be more integrated, but it's nowhere near as powerful or configurable as GNOME (although it's still light years beyond Windows). Of course, that's just my opinion :-) -- Sridhar Dhanapalan. I hate the idea of the hours I am gonna waste getting it all perfect again on the new drive (the old one, install is 2 months old, got it perfect and it has an uptime of over a month now. [newbie] Installation in a loop.
Hi I am trying to install MD 8.0 dualboot on hdb with an existing W2k installation on hda. My system's information is at the bottom hereof. I have done some earlier installations with the same set of disks, also dual boot w2k on two different HDs to test and play with Linux before installing it for use on my work computer. All those installations have gone smoothly. This time, after selecting the language, the installation skipped all other installation steps to go directly to partitioning the HD. I select hdb, deleted all existing partitions and selected auto allocate. Next a dialogue box comes up with just: An error occurred, swap area needs to be. And OK. Just that. Well what does the swap area need to be...? I tried to change that, but it only allowed me to take swap from 243 to 244Mb even if I made /home much smaller, i.e. there is enough space for swap to be changed up or down in size. And this is where the installation process stops, going back to the start of the partitioning process, etc. Any clues? TIA Lex. Thanks Guys, I will think hard and work out what the best method is.. I have a CD with all the updates on it, so I might just tar a few directories and go with that if I did go with something like Ghost, then I'd just have to redo all the partition sizes to work with the new drive anyway.. so it might be better to just do a fresh install... RE: [newbie] TELNET help! Please?
it is, telnet is started by inetd or xinetd (depending on what you have installed..) if its xinetd, go into /etc/xinetd.d and check the telnet entry... make sure it doesn't have disable=yes in there, also, it might not hurt to comment out the +=USERID lines for logon success and logon failure,, I had problems once until I did that.. I also usually add a line to the effect:only_from = 192.168.0.1 #or whatever your ip is... adds that little bit more protection, expecially since telnet doesn't have alot to start with. swap to ssh, its just as easy.. load and install ssh and ssl on your linux box.. for windows clients, download Terra Term Pro and the ssh addin (free) (this is your telnet capable client prog, ssh and telnet work much the same once connected.) then download Ixplorer, which is a ftp type frontend for putty, which is a dos ssh ftp (scp) client.. all of that is free, and if you download Ixplorer which has putty built in, then its as easy as... give it a shot... rgds Frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Marchetti, Peter Sent: Saturday, 1 September 2001 12:27 AM To: '[EMAIL PROTECTED]' Subject: [newbie] TELNET help! Re: [newbie] TELNET help! Please?
Telnet is easy to use, but it's starting to be phased out because it's insecure. The odds are, if you're dealing with a Mandrake 8.0 install, the telnet server is not installed. As I recall, it's not set to install automatically. But run this command to determine if the server is actually started. [timh@r2d2 timh]$ rpm -qa | grep telnet gnome-telnet-2.4-2mdk telnet-0.17-7mdk ktelnet-0.7b1-7mdk As you can see, I don't have the telnet server installed. The RPM you're looking for is telnet-server-0.17-7mdk.i586.rpm. As I recall, it's on the first CD. Try: rpm -ivh telnet-server-0.17-7mdk.i586.rpm Then try and telnet to the machine. However I would suggest you find the OpenSSH RPMs on the disc, install those and leave telnet server unistalled. [timh@ericekong mandrake80]$ ls -la openssh* | awk '{print $5,$6,$7,$8,$9}' 130192 Apr 13 10:14 openssh-2.5.2p2-3mdk.i586.rpm 31197 Apr 13 10:14 openssh-askpass-2.5.2p2-3mdk.i586.rpm 11513 Apr 13 10:14 openssh-askpass-gnome-2.5.2p2-3mdk.i586.rpm 213305 Apr 13 10:14 openssh-clients-2.5.2p2-3mdk.i586.rpm 151961 Apr 13 10:14 openssh-server-2.5.2p2-3mdk.i586.rpm Those would be the RPMs you'd need to install. In Mdk7.2 in my case,, for some reason, all the url's in the normal updates section disappeaared.. so I setup the dev section and opened one of the FTP urls in netscape, then I chanced the url to just mandrake from mandrake-cooker and browsed to the updates directory,,, copied the url back into software manager and off it went.. make sure the url points only to the updates directory, not the specific version of mdk inside it,, software update will open that directory by itself... worked fine for me.. rgds Frank -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Bryan Harper Sent: Saturday, 1 September 2001 1:15 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [newbie] Software Manager(rpmdrake) frustrations Hi All, Could someone tell me why I can't add a new source for rpms and get it to actually work? How would I turn on forwarding, manually, in SNF? Thank you again. From the HP firewall, I can ping both of its NICs and can also ping the 'internet' (laptop - 192.168.4.65) and any internal machine (say: 192.168.3.45), so the TCP/IP stuff seems to be fine. I can connect to the HP firewall with either ssh or Mandrake Security (port 8443: I intentionally set it up to allow both) from either the LAN side or the 'internet' side, but I cannot connect from the LAN side to the internet side at all. Mandrake Security - Restrict Access lists Firewall Rules on and Mandrake Security - Internet Access lists Access Status Down and no amount of poking 'Start' or 'Stop', in any combination, seems to change its status. . . sigh Any hints on how I should proceed would be appreciated. That's the IP for www.google.com. If you get no response, you need to move on and try the next pair of commands for IP forwarding. If you get a response, try pinging www.google.com. If you can ping the IP but not the domain name, you need to setup DNS and I can tell you how to do that, too. Anyway, here's those commands, don't forget to su into root and remember that everything is case sensitive: # ipfwadm -F -p deny # ipfwadm -F -a accept -m -S 192.168.0.0/24 -D 0/0 (if your home network is different from 192.168.0.0, change the command to suit your network, just don't forget the /24 at the end, the same holds for the next pair of commands if these don't work) # ipchains -P forward -j deny # ipchains -A forward -s 192.168.0.0/24 -d 0/0 -j MASQ and, lastly: # iptables -t nat -P POSTROUTING DROP # iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING DROP -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE In that last case you will want to change ppp0 to the appropriate ethernet device if you are connected through a DSL/cable connection on one of your ethernet cards, as opposed to a dial-up connection like these instructions assume. RE: [newbie] WoooHooo!!! Hard disk upgrade, but now a problem.
Ghost and Partition magic will both automatically resize Linux ext2 partitions for you... The problem is that if the /boot partition is beyond the 1024 track limit (does this still apply anyone?). You should make a Linux boot disk then use Ghost to transfer your partitions to the larger drive. If you have a separate /boot partition you'll have no trouble running Lilo after booting from a floppy to get Linux to recognize the new partition sizes for the boot up. I've done this and it works. -JMS [EMAIL PROTECTED] |-Original Message- |From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |[mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] On Behalf Of Franki |Sent: Friday, August 31, 2001 12:19 PM |To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] |Subject: RE: [newbie] WoooHooo!!! [newbie] Midnight commander in Single Network Firewall

I'm not complete a newbie at linux, but don't have so much expirience with mandrake. But I have a few questions. First: Is there a complete FAQ about the SNF ? Second: I have have problems using ICQ (from my win2k workstation) behind the SNF. It says, can't connect the ICQ server. Has someone an ID how to get this working? Third: By trying to changes some configurations I was looking for Midnightcommander and couldn't find it. Is there a possibility to install it? I try'ed to install it with rpm --install and then a mc.rpm, but then it complaines about perl missing... Forth: Is it possible to run a xwindows version on the NFS? So lots of questions, but I hope someone can help me with this :-) Greetings and thanks in advance!! Draconis 42? 7 and a half million years and all you can come up with is 42?! Re: [newbie] Configuration Files (repost)
Well I have no idea why .*rc files are used. But I know they're basically personal config files. /etc is basically full of config files and information files. There are some scripts in there to start services. Things like /etc/modules.conf are really just informational config files. You can edit that yourself, but for the most part, Linux is what makes changes to that. But there are still things like /etc/sendmail.cf, or /etc/hosts, /etc/bashrc. If you go into /etc/init.d you will find the scripts that are used to restart services. Like /etc/init.d/network, sshd, http, postfix and more. You can do a ls in /etc/init.d to see everything in there. .*rc files that are in $HOME, are used to over ride the default *rc files. If you check, there's already a /etc/bashrc, and more. Those are looked at as soon as you get a prompt, or as soon as you run an app. Those are the defaults. Now you can edit those, but if you have several users on that one machine, they may like/want the changes you made to the config file. So you make changes to the $HOME/.bashrc instead of /etc/bashrc. The $HOME/.bashrc and files of that nature are copied into the home directories when the user is created. Those files are copied directly from /etc/skel. On FreeBSD, it will actually ask you if you would like the skel files to be copied, and you can say yay, or nay. In Linux, it does it with out asking. I'm not sure if the person that posted this message to start out with will see this, but I hope this answers somebody's questions. tdh -- T. [newbie] Carte Trident
Hi ! I had to reinstall LM 7.2 because I changed a lot of things on my machine. Now I have the same old problem: X doesn't work. I have read here that my card -Trident 3D 975- may be the problem. Do you actually think so? Because if so, I will change it, because I'm sick and tired of video troubles. What video card you know that works very well under Linux, please? May be you know how to make the card work. I know it IS possible because I reached in the past, but I had to change the X server to FBDev. But I forgot how to do this :-) What specs do you need to think about? My machine is a Pentium II 350 Mhz, 256 Mb RAM, and Linux is on hdb (hda is windoze). hdb has 15 Gb. [newbie] hotmail like platform for linux?
Just curious, would anyone out there be interested in a web based email system that can be used with say Evolution or KMail or something. For example, I have a hotmail account which makes things really convient when travelling because you can always check email where ever you are. But I actually don't prefere to read and write from a web based email system. However, hotmail is integrated with Outlook Express so I can use my hotmail account just like my other SMTP/POP3 email accounts and this makes things quite nice. It would be nice if mandrake or ximian or whoever could provide a web based email accounts that are integrated in KMail or Evolution, I would dump my hotmail account and go for a mandrake or ximian account instead and then I could be one step closer to running linux 100% of the time. [newbie] ModemBlaster help...
Ever since I've installed the new Shuttle MB, I've had no ISA slots so I lost my 56k Diamond Supra internal ISA modem, which ran great. I've been limping along on a Practical Peripherals 28.8 external which works ok. I picked up an external 56k Creative ModemBlaster today. I switched the modems out and booted up. Kudzu reported that my serial modem had been removed (which I expected) but then did not find the ModemBlaster and install it. (which I did not expect). Anyone have a ModemBlaster working with 8.0, and if so, how? Thanks. -- /\ DarkLord \/ Want to buy your Pack or Services from MandrakeSoft? Go to http://www.mandrakestore.com
[newbie] Port Forwarding
Hey All I want to port forward a port. I current use iptables with the following chains. OPEN FTP PORTS AND FORWARD $IPT -A INPUT -p tcp --destination-port 123 -j ACCEPT $IPT -A PREROUTING -t nat -p tcp -d $EXTERNALIP --dport 123 -j DNAT --to $FTPMACHINE $IPT -A PREROUTING -t nat -p tcp -d $INTERNALIP --dport 123 -j DNAT --to $FTPMACHINE Bastically, I am forwarding port 123 to the internal address with an ftp server ($FTPMACHINE). The problem is that if someone behind a firewall attemps to login the ftp, they can not see the directory list even with PASV enabled. My understanding is that to machines behind two different firewalls cannot talk to each (ie ftpclient cannot talk to ftp server is they are behind two different firewalls) Is there anyway to bypass my firewall and send all data on port 123 to $FTPMACHINE? [newbie] Oh boy! I done it now! (kinda long)
Hey gang, Well, I finally got my CD with the KDE 2.2 on it. I placed everything in a folder in my /home directory and then as root, I opened up package manager and tried to install everything...dependency errors. Fine. I downloaded and installed everything I needed, but kept getting this: kdegraphics = 2.1.1-3mdk is needed by kdegraphics-devel-2.1.1-3mdk Since I had that installed I was stumped, so I tried a suggested solution to installing KDE 2.2... I did this in a console: urpmi -v --auto --force *.rpm Everything seemed to install, and I did a reboot just for the heck of it. Aurora came up and ran like normal, but after it was done, and I get to the small window to choose which user, I had 5 new ones, so I chose John, like normal, and kde. It seems to do everything correctly but when the kde xwindows should come up, I get an xterm window. I type in startx, but I get this every time: Xlib:Connection to 0.0 refused by server Xlib:Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 key giving up xinit:Unable to connect to x server xinit:no such process (errno 3): server error Before any of that though I got a small message telling me to try removing /tmp/.X0-lock and restart...I did, but it made no difference. I'd really like to get back into my Linux, especially since I haven't backed-up my customer db yet. Does anyone have a clue if this is possible without reloading Linux? I have also tried getting into the gui from the console and cli, but it comes up with the same stuff I wrote above. I sure would appreciate any help with this guys...I hate having to boot into windows! Thanks in advance. Your properly configured fstab and normal kernel with vfat enabled should be able to work with windoze partitions, other than NT's ntfs. Just to satisfy your curiosity, it's two separate computers, thus the need for floppies, or, for example, smbclient. The only thing you might run into is /n (line feed) differences. Linux does it properly, windoze doesn't. Well, cept for DOS's 'edit'. If you move or copy a txt file to windoze, open it with 'edit' and then save it. Then even brain dead windoze editors will be able to display it properly. Ahh, that's helpful. I tried Notepad, Wordpad, and Word. Word works, but it's a little cumbersome. Changing the startup and shutdown sounds in KDE is fairly simple. Go to the KDE Control Center, and open up the Look and Feel section. Click on System Notifications and in the right side of the window, open the KDE System Notifications section. There you will see 2 entries labeled KDE is Exiting and KDE is Starting Up. Once done with that, you put hdc in primary master position, boot from the rescue CD by the usual method, and # mount /dev/hdax /mnt # x is the number of your root partition # chroot /mnt # /sbin/lilo # sync Then hit the reset switch and remove the CD. Draconis You absolutely must _NOT_ use mc or any editor to make changes on SNF itself. That is why they were left off. For example, /etc/resolv.conf is loaded every boot from another file. Most of the configuration is automated by rules you set up. Do ALL your configuration from the web interface. Use a graphics browser like netscape from another machine in the network. Login as admin, not root, and use the admin password you set up. The URL will be https://(IP of SNF):4143 And you will see how to keep port 4000 open for ICQ as soon as you use the web tools and wizards. I did choose the option to keep the current generic serial modem setup, and I can connect. Its odd though. My old internal Diamond Supra 56k ISA modem showed connects of 57600. The external 28.8 Practical Peripherals showed connects of 26400. The external 56k Creative is showing 26400 as well... ;-( Are you using KPPP? If so go into the setup and check on modem where it sets the speed. You should be able to set it for 56k or 112k and then your connection speed should jump up. By the way, I don't know if you know it but the speed shown is 56,000 bits but what is actual transfer is more like 4.5 kbytes per second. This means that 8bits equal a byte and there is a start bit and a end bit on each byte so divide 56 by 10 and you get 5.6bytes, but FCC only allows up to 5.3 B/s transfer so that is the best you can expect. I never get it mostly I get around 4.5. Sorry if I am telling you what you already know, but it fascinates me how numbers get thrown around and they aren't what they appear. Let me know if you have any problem setting the modem speed. And anyone who sees my math above as messed up, please jump in here and put it straight. Things are smoother and faster than in 8.0 (especially Nautilus), and there are a few extra little niceties like Doorman and Red Carpet. Do you think that MDK 8.1 will have the full version of Ximian GNOME? I don't have a cd burner and out here in the sticks, it's impossible to get broadband that supports Linux. If 8.1 will not include it, is there perhaps a RPM or something that would reasonably download over 56k? I e-mailed Civileme about that a few weeks ago. He said that Mandrake often take stuff from Ximian GNOME and incorporate it into their own version (it's all GPL, after all). I suggested that they have a look at the ximian-doorman, ximian-utils and red-carpet packages. They appear to be considering ximian-doorman and ximian-utils, but red-carpet is out because it apparently doesn't check dependencies as well as Mandrakesoft would like (and probably also because it offers the same functionality as MandrakeUpdate, possibly creating confusion amongst users). Ximian's priorities at present are existing GNOME users (it's much easier to keep existing users than to find new ones), the corporate desktop (through partnerships with Red hat, Sun and HP) and the underprivileged (schools, poor nations, etc.). They are not as focussed on the consumer desktop as KDE. This, in turn, puts Mandrake Linux support as a low priority, since it is KDE-centric and is focussed on consumers in richer nations (selling via Wal-Mart, etc.). This is the main reason why Mandrake 8.0 support was so slow in arrival. -- Sridhar Dhanapalan. There are two major products that come from Berkeley: LSD and UNIX.
