Re: [newbie] Mandrake Raising More Capital

2002-12-21 Per discussione Joseph Braddock
Jerry,

Maybe you would be willing to contribute some of your time to improve Mandrake's
stability. There were numerous beta and release candidates for Mandrake 9.0. If you
are having stability issues, the time to have them fixed is prior to the release being
official. When Mandrake 9.1 is in beta and release candidate status, maybe you can
download a copy (or buy one from cheapbytes) and submit the problems you've been
experiencing to the development team.

This is by no means an effort to slam you, it's simply that if we want the distro to
work flawlessly and support all kinds of hardware combinations, then the more who join
the testing effort the better.

I have to say I'm middle-of-the-road here. I bought my distros and was
happy with 8.2. However, I'm NOT happy with 9.0. If 9.0 is all they can do
with the money I paid spent, then no, I'm not going to continue investing
money in a company who seems to be following in the footsteps of microsoft
when it comes to releasing something whether it's ready or not, and IMHO,
9.0 was not ready to be released. In fact, my 2nd machine which I've been
fighting with using 9.0 will be downgrading back to 8.2 some time this
weekend. Another thing is for sure, when future versions are released I'm
definitely going to wait and watch the forums/lists before shelling out 70
bucks again. I was so happy with 8.2 that I bought 9.0 as soon as it was on
the shelf thinking it would be even better but that does not seem to be the
case, unfortunately. I'm just waiting for the day when Debian steps up to a
2.4 kernel. I'm getting comfortable enough with gnu/linux that I'm ready to
make a switch from a distro that's easy to use to one that emphasizes
stability. IMO having apps freeze and crash doesn't seem very easy to
use. If I want that, I'll go back to M$.
Now if Mandrake were to turn around with 9.1 and go back to the quality of
8.2, I'd sing its praises once again.

Have you disabled Supermount? If I'm not mistaken, a USB camera is seen as USB

Assuming it's not something simple like the network cable fell out
(don't laugh, I once spent an hour tracking that one down). I'm
wondering if you're having some kind of IRQ conflict. Do you have an
on-board nic or is it a pci card. If it's a PCI card, try moving it to
a different slot and see if it's detected. Some motherboards are funny
about assigning resources depending on what PCI slot is used. After
Linux boots up (whether you change slots or not), you might want to
check the error logs and see if there are any boot messages that might
shed light on what's going on.

Greg,

Sorry this is late getting back to you (I lost a hard drive so was out
of commission for a bit (well, intermittantly it was going bad till it
died totally)). Anyway, I'm glad you got your problem resolved. The
GATEWAY issue I was referring to applied to having an ethernet card and
using a modem for dial-up to the internet (particularly if you had the
Mandrake install program auto-configure your network). Anyway, the
errata from the Mandrake 9.0 page states:

Error scenario: You have an ethernet card for the local LAN and a modem
for internet access and you can't reach the internet.
Why: Drakconnect wrongly asks for a gateway, and ppp can't set your
modem connection as the default route.
Solution: As root, edit /etc/sysconfig/network and manually remove the
GATEWAY entry.

Since you are using a cable modem, it wouldn't have applied to your
situation, but I wanted to post this anyway, in case anyone else was
waiting on the info.

Also, what is the latest kernel for mandrake? I am running the one that
came with the distro, 2.4.19-16mdk. If there is a later mdk kernel, I
wouldn't mind loading it in, just incase this is a bug in the current
one. I went into the mandrake control centre, and used the update
software, but it doesn't appear to update kernels, none were listed.
This is unless this one is the most current?? The update seems to be a
bit buggy as well, it kept on dropping out on the downloads, even though
the connection was up and working well. I checked by doing a bit of
browsing. Maybe the mirror was a little overloaded at the time, will
try later. Just want to make sure I have all updates installed before

Re: [newbie] Difference between 8.0, 8.2, 9.x

2002-12-09 Per discussione Joseph Braddock
That's kind of like ansking What's the difference between Windows 95,
98 and Me? In short, with each new release, Mandrake (or any other
distribution) attempts to include the latest versions of the linux
kernel and various programs they include as part of their distribution.
The problem is that sometimes, while old bugs are fixed, new ones are
introduced. It just depends on whether the new bugs affect you (for
instance I understand there is a bug with certain RAID controllers in
9.0, but since I don't have a RAID controller, it's not a problem).

If you want the latest versions of the various desktops and
applications, then 9.0 would be the way to go. 8.2 is probably a little
more stable (if you apply all the patches to it) than 9.0, but will be
more difficult in the long run to keep up to date (as more rpm packagers
start compiling and packaging applications for 9.0).

Unless there is a real show stopper for you with 9.0, I'd probably
recommend installing it.

I'm just picking up on the tail end of this thread, so someone might
have already answered this. I'm assuming your NT partition is setup
with FAT. If so, FAT (Win9x, WinNT) has a 2GB limit. That's why when
drives larger than 2GB first appeared, they were set up with multiple
2GB partitions. I believe that FAT32 and NTFS gets around this.
Problem is that NTFS is currently read-only in Linux (AFAIK).

I've been using InstantRecovery from Novastor with good success. It's
actually a bootable linux distro that then reads the drive partitions
and lets you write them to CD, CDRW, tape or other partitions (than the
one being backed up). I personally write to CDRWs and it automatically
spans them and they are bootable. Works great. I'm not sure if it's

It sounds like it is waiting for something to time out before it can
proceed. Is there still a reference to the old CD-writer in you
/etc/fstab? What about, after disconnecting the drive (both power AND
data cable, right?), did you remove it from the CMOS settings if it was
originally manually set (versus auto-detect)? I had a problem with a
failed floppy disk (actually, the cable was loose). The boot process
would hang while trying to access the device. I replaced the cable and
all was well.

It could also be your network card. Unless you told Mandrake otherwise,
during the install, I believe it tries to look for a dhcp and dns
server. If you aren't using the network card at this time, you can
always tell it to not load at startup and see if that improves the boot
time.

Could also just run the remove software gui and click on the kde desktop and it will
uninstall everything that Mandrake had installed as part of KDE desktop. Or, if
that's too extreme, select all packages and then click on kdebase. That will
uninstall most of KDE and you can go through the list and uninstall any KDE things

I read Direct CD CDRWs by mounting them with a file system of UDF, works fine. If
you are seeing autorun.inf and udf.exe, then Mandrake is probably detecting it as the
iso9660. If you manually mount the drive and use -t udf you should be OK. Try
something like:
mount -t udf /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom

(you might have to change the /dev and /mnt depending on how your system is setup).

BTW, CDRWs do not automatically have the autorun.inf and udf.exe. Only those
formatted by Direct CD (and possibly other Windows burning software).

you can use a CDRW media in your linux system and expect to use it you

When you installed from scratch, did that include /home? It's possible that if your
user directory already existed and you reinstalled Mandrake (any linux) that if the
/home/username is the same as your user id, you don't have permissions in it. If you
think this might be the case, as root you can type chown -R userid /home/userdirectory
and that will reset the ownership of the home directory.

If that is not the case, if you create another user, can that user get into KDE?

Re: [newbie] OpenOffice....

2002-10-24 Per discussione Joseph Braddock
If you installed OO from the .tar.gz file, it installed in the directory you
specified, most likely under /usr/share/OpenOffice.org or something like that. The
problem is that that directory is not in your path. You have two solutions, either
add it to your path or create symlinks under /usr/bin (which is in your path).
Actually, there is a third option - download and use the Mandrake RPMS for OO and you
won't have to worry about it. The links will show in your menu and the program files
will be in /usr/bin.

Assuming you are using Windows (since you sent your email from Outlook), your computer

I recall reading that this is not specific to Mandrake but is an X problem (I think

It appears that when you removed KDE2.2, you also removed the KDM it was using. When

#x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon
to: x:5:respawn:/opt/kde3/bin/kdm -nodaemon

This is assuming that your KDE3 is installed in /opt/kde3 and that /opt/kde3/bin does

Just to clarify a couple of things, in my response (above), I should have mentioned

The # sign indicates the line is a comment. What I did was to comment the original

Also, the line in question occurs at the end of the inittab.

Re: [newbie] supermount problem?

I've run into this when I'm logged in as a regular user and have a CD mounted and then
open a terminal window and SU as root and change the CD. It appears that mtab shows
both the regular user and root CDs. When it happens, the regular user gets all kinds
of wierd things (i.e. can't eject cdrom because it's in use). To fix it, while still
as root, I unmount /mnt/cdrom for how ever many occurances are in mtab.

I'd try multiple unmountings before disabling the supermount for a CDROM.

Re: [newbie] Distributing the Power Pack?

If I'm not mistaken, the directories for the Power Pack and download editions are
different. Giving just the first three CDs may not have all of the files the download
has. Also, the software manager is going to assume all of the power pack CDs are
there.

If the problem is downloading the ISO images, you can order them from Mandrake. I
prefer this approach over buying them from various web sites that sell them for
$5.00 because buying them from Mandrake actually provides revenue for the company.

Are you plugged in through a hub or directly to a usb port? PNY recommends going
direct to the USB port for Windows. Not sure why it should make a difference, though.

Again, I'm using the SmartMedia reader not the CompactFlash reader. I also have the
stock 8.2 kernel loaded and I am running devfs (you might try turning it on/off
depending on whether it is on or off now).

It sounds like the reader is detected okay, but it is failing to assign it to a scsi
port. You could try to manually create the scsi port under /dev and see if that fixes
it. It would be something like /dev/scsi/host1/bus0/target0/lun0/disc. Upto /disc,
everything is just a folder. I'm not sure how to create the /disc part which is the
actual device, though.

Probably, not much help, huh?

Dennis,

After you reinstalled Mandrake (I'm assuming 8.2), did you update the CD burning
software you are using. If I recall, most were broken out of the box and had to be
patched or updated.

One other thing on your compact flash (although this poster was asking about smart
media readers). I know that on my smart media card, I had to have the camera format
the media first and I wasn't sure what it formatted it to. I'm wondering if your
reader is working, but the format isn't being recognized. In your fstab, if you are
using vfat, try using msdos or umsdos. I had to use one of them with an earlier
version of Linux. If you dual boot, you can check the properties under windows and
see if it indicates what file system it is using (mine actually says something like
DOS, not FAT, which led me to try mounting it as msdos)

Just a thought.

be. If a link could also be added for MandrakeClub, that would be even better, yet.

Finally, what is the official way to make suggestions to Mandrake?

It sounds like you installed OpenOffice as a standalone app when you wanted to do it
as a network app (and after the install, you would run setup as a user and it would
copy some configuration files to your home directory). I believe you have to add
-network to the install command line. Just incase, there should be a readme file in
the directory you extracted OpenOffice into. Check it to make sure -network is
correct. You want to look for something about a network install.

I would guess that you still have KDE2 still loaded on your system. If so, it is the
kdm that loads instead of the KDE3 version (which is what you are configuring). To
get KDM from KDE3 to load change the last line in /etc/inittab to read:
x:5:respawn:/opt/kde3/bin/kdm -nodaemon (instead of x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm
-nodaemon)
and reboot your machine. BTW, you need to have root access to edit inittab (either
login as root or in a terminal window do a su command).

Is it possible that you've disabled devfs? I think the usb stuff uses it and if so,
that could be your problem.

First, I think you need to remove the fs= before the vfat. Are you using the stock
kernel and are you using LM 8.2? I have the PNY SmartMedia reader (not the compact
flash) and under 8.1, I had to use msdos or umsdos (I can't remember which) instead of
vfat, so you might try one of them. Also, although I don't think this is the problem,
you might try a shorter directory name under mnt. Something 8 characters or less.
Finally, and I know this is a stupid questions, so I ask for forgiveness up front, you
do have the compact flash in the reader and it has been formatted by the camera, right?

Did you actually make a directory under /mnt called compactflash? If so, your mount
command should work (assuming you don't have other SCSI devices, in which case, your
reader might not be sda1). Assuming your reader actually is sda1 and you have created
the directory compactflash under /mnt, you can add the following line to your
/etc/fstab file:
  /dev/sda1 /mnt/compactflash vfat noauto,user

Then you can just say mount /mnt/compactflash and it should work. BTW, the noauto
tells linux not to automatically mount it at startup, since it will generate an error
unless the flash card is actually in it. The user allows a regular user to
mount/unmount it.

Re: [newbie] Modem Installation Help

2002-05-24 Per discussione Joseph Braddock

Are you sure your modem is an i810? I'm pretty sure the modem you gave in your other
post should use the pct789 setting, but if you really do have an i810, then use it.

As long as you are using kernel 2.4.something, you should be okay. You don't need,
nor do you want to go back to, 2.4.0.

As for getting things from windows to linux on your dual boot machine. You should
have a directory under /mnt called windows or something like that (unless, possibly if
your Windows 2000 is using NTFS). If it is there, then you should be able to change
to that directory from either the console prompt or through Konqueror or other
graphical file manager. That (/mnt/windows) is your windows partition. Anything you
download there can be copied to your linux partition and vice versa. Pretty neat, huh?

As for your floppy, chances are it either has some bad sectors marked on it or it was
formatted as a system floppy and has some hidden files. But, since you can copy from
/mnt/windows, your really don't need it anyway.

The error you are getting with the insmod ptserial sounds like there was an error when
it was compiled. What I would do is go to the directory where you untarred the modem
driver and type (without quotes) ./configure hal=pct789. When it finishes, type
(without quotes) make and if there aren't any errors type (without quotes) make
install. After that, see if your insmod commands work. If they don't, let me know
either on the list here or email me direct.

BTW, although it is frustrating, the problem you are having, really isn't a linux
problem. It's a problem with trying to use hardware designed for a specific OS
(windows) on a different OS than what it was designed for. The fact that linux can
actually use it (well, once you get it installed) is a testament to how good linux
really is!

Go to www.linmodems.org
Then go to Jan's PCTEL Resource link (www.medres.ch/~jstifter/pctel)
From Jan's site, download the pctel-0.9.2.tar.gz (I actually am using the
pctel-0.8.6.tar.gz and the directions I gave are for it, but the newer version should
be similar).

Since it is a tar.gz file, you will need to extract it by typing tar zxf
pctel-0.9.2.tar.gz and it will create a directory called pctel-0.9.2 (if you use the
0.8.6 driver then the directory will be pctel-0.8.6).

That would be correct, the problem is some conflict between KDE 2.2.2 and KDE 3.0. I

If you don't have 2.2.2 installed, then you won't have the problem. Check Mandrake's

Your solution is almost the same as mine but I dragged from the menu to the desktop
edited the new desktop icon and then dragged it to the taskbar, I like to be
different :-)
However, (and again this might be known, I haven't checked) I have found that when I
did an install without Kde 2.2.2 and then installed Kde 3.0 afterwards taskbar icons
worked properly and no --noxft errror, so it appears to be an issue between 2.2.2
3.0

Re: [newbie] PCTEL HSP56K MicroModem

2002-04-27 Per discussione Joseph Braddock

I am using a modem based on the PCTEL HSP56K. The driver I'm using was downloaded
from Jan's site (http://www.medres.ch/~jstifter/pctel). It is the pctel-0.8.6. To
install it, though, you will also need the kernel source and header files installed.
Untar it and then su to root. Next from the pctel-0.8.6 directory (it was created when
you untarred it), issue the command ./configure --with-hal=pct789 (without the
quotes). Nexts, assuming there weren't any errors listed, type make (again without
the quotes). Again, assuming there are no errors, type make install (once again, no
quotes).

Assuming you didn't get any errors, you should try typing insmod pctel followed by
insmod ptserial (no quotes). If you didn't get an error message, then all is well
and you are almost done!

You need to add the following lines to the /etc/modules.conf file:
# for pctel modem
alias char-major-62 ptserial
below ptserial pctel
# country code for pctel modem
options ptserial country_code=13

Now, one more step. Still as root, issue the command modemconf. This will start
Mandrake's modem configurator. It won't find your modem, so the Unknown option will
be checked. That's fine, simply hit the detect button and Mandrake should find it on
ttyS15 (I think). Once it finds it, modemconf will point /dev/modem to it and you
should be able to use the modem without problem.

BTW, once you are done installing and testing that this works, you can uninstall the
kernel source and headers.

If you run into problems or get error messages, post them and I'll try and help you
out.

2002-04-27 Per discussione Joseph Braddock

Many people simply install everything under /. But, I would recommend having a
separate /home partition. The main advantage to this is that when you go to install a
later (or same) version of Mandrake, it won't automatically format the /home
partition, which means any files that you have created, downloaded or otherwise stored
there will still be intact.
As to the size of the /home partition, that, of course, depends. If you're like my
son, who has stores hundreds of mp3 files on it, then you probably want it to be quite
large! How big is the hard drive you are planning to partition and what are you
planning to use the system for (as that can influence how to size partitions).

Re: [newbie] Smartmedia card reader

2002-04-18 Per discussione Joseph Braddock

Is it possible that you are not running devfs? If you issue the command cat
/etc/lilo.conf from a shell, it will display the various boot options that appear on
the menu when you first boot. Under your linux entry, there should be a line that
begins with append=. On that line, it probably says devfs=mount or it might say
devfs=nomount. I'm pretty sure if it says nomount, you will manually need to create
the entries under /dev. The devfs=mount should create them automatically.

What version of Mandrake are you using? Also, have you installed the kernel source

Mandrake 8.2 with 0.8.6 drivers. If you still are having problems, I can email you the

Re: [newbie] modem

It sounds like you have a winmodem. Do you know what type of modem you have? If you
are dual booting into windows, you can tell from that. If you can get the
Manufacturer and model number, then you can get the right drivers for linux from
www.linmodems.org

Usually the message you are getting is because the dialer can't talk to the modem
(because the correct driver isn't loaded) and it assumes the modem is busy (wrong) or
not responding (correct).

Re: [newbie] SM56 in Mandrake 8.2

It's odd that pci shows the modem using IRQ 10 but interrupts don't show it listed.
Are you sure you have the modem driver installed correctly? Maybe that it's not
actually loading. Here's something to try. Open a terminal window and su to change
to root. Then run modemconf and see if it detects your modem. It may not,
particularly if you are using IRQ 10. Click on the detect button and see if it finds
it then. If it does, you should click the accept button. This will create a link
between /dev/modem and the actual device.

Also, pctel-0.9.0.tar.gz is the current version of the driver. I'm using the

What driver did you use for this modem? I've got half a dozen in various windows and
linux boxes. I've had good success with the pctel-0.8.6.tar.gz and the older
pctel-2.4.7.tar.gz drivers. You can get either of them by going to www.linmodems.org
and then go to Jan's PCTel site.

I just did an isnmod pctel.o and insmod ptserial.o, and they worked fine (no -f). Why
are you trying to force the install? If you've upgraded the kernel, you will need to
recompile and install the drivers.

Add the following to the end of your /etc/modules.conf
# for pctel modem
alias char-major-62 ptserial
below ptserial pctel
# country code for pctel modem
options ptserial country_code=13

afterwards, do a depmods -a (without the quotes). You won't have to keep

Re: [newbie] Smart Media Reader - Not Under Linux

2002-02-06 Per discussione Joseph Braddock

I know this is going to sound like a stupid question, but you have tried it
with the actual card in the reader, right? Mandrake also thinks mine is a
32MB scsi drive (because that's the size of my smart media card). But it
only recognizes it with the card in. If I boot without the card in it, it
gives an error on scda1. So I told it not to auto-mount. Then I can put the
card in and mount it manually whenever I want to.

I'm using an Olympus D-460Z and it only has a serial connection which is just
too slow to suit me. I ended up paying $19.95 at the local Staples and got a
PNY Smart Media reader, figuring that I could always boot into windows to use
it. But to my suprise, it works fine with LM 8.1 (at least after I changed
the fstab entry to msdos instead of vfat).

You might try turning off devfs (or on, if it's off) and see if that makes a
difference. I believe one of it's purposes is to help with the detection of
USB devices.

LM had no problem with the Olympus C-700 directly plugged into a usb
port. Harddrake found it, listed it under the drives, and I was able to
mount it with no problem. And the really funny thing is, with both of my
card readers, UsbView not only sees them, but even knows what their
correct names are! But Mandrake thinks the dual-slot reader was a 1-gig
scsci drive, and couldn't see the other one at all.
Apparently, some card readers are spotted by Mandrake, while others
aren't. I'm going to give Redhat 7.2 a shot tomorrow, and see if it does
 any better.

Re: [newbie] printer and /etc/modules

2002-01-19 Per discussione Joseph Braddock

Under /proc there are all sorts of informational files. You can few them
opening a terminal or shell and type cd /proc and then you can issue, for
example, cat dma to see what dma channels are in use. cat
ioports will tell you what ports are used by what devices and cat interrupts
will tell you the same for IRQs.

There should also be one there call isapnp. It's longer, and you may want to
use less instead of cat to view it. Mine has my soundblaster card listed
with the settings in use at the top (followed by a lot of alternate settings
that aren't used). What is useful about it is that it should show you all of
the optional IRQs, DMA and ioports that can be used by your card. That way
if one of them are in conflict, you know what you can change.

I'm not sure the printer port uses a dma channel, so that may not be the
problem. It still sounds like some kind of IRQ problem. When you were in
your CMOS, did you notice if the PNP settings were set for auto or manual
(where you could reserve specific IRQs). If manual, there might not be an
available IRQ to use without sharing, so you might try auto and see.

Another problem may be that it's not a shared IRQ but a shared DMA channel.
Something else to try would be to open up the sound server configuration
applet (Kmenu-Configuration-KDE-Sound-SoundServer). On the sound IO tab,
see if full duplex is enabled and if it is, disable it. My soundblaster
wouldn't work consistently with it enabled. And just incase Alsa or
autodetect is the sound system on that tab, try manually changing it to OSS.

Is the soundcard a stock Soundblaster or is it a soundblaster compatible?

Re: [newbie] Sound Printing again

2002-01-06 Per discussione Joseph Braddock

It sounds like your sound card and lpt port are using the same IRQ, most
likely IRQ 7. It would be best to change the IRQ of the sound card as IRQ 7
is usually the standard for printer ports. If the sound card doesn't have
jumpers (which most don't anymore), then you will need to find a way to do it
through linux. I have an SB16 card that I assign the IRQ in modules.conf,
but each sound card driver is different, so that may not be possible in your
case.

Another thing to try, in your bios, setting plug and play OS to off if it is
on or on if it is off and see if that fixes it. If not, you can try setting
it to manual and reserving and IRQ such as 5 and see if the sound card will
then use it. If it is already set to manual, then try setting it to
automatic.

One other thing you may try is to remove the sound card from the computer and
reboot. Linux should come up fine and should ask to remove the settings for
the sound card. Tell it yes. Make sure your printer is working, and then
shut down. Now, reinstall the sound card (in a different slot if one is
available) and boot the computer. Harddrake should detect it and try and
find a free IRQ for it.

Re: [newbie] Stale Information Left Over From Previous Installations

2002-01-05 Per discussione Joseph Braddock

Assuming you told the installer to format the partitions after you
re-assigned the names, it should have done just that. If what you were
having problems with related to configuration files in your home directory,
then when you logged in, you would have received the same home directory and
configuration files you had before. What I do before a new install on an
existing installation is rename my old home directories to something else.
That way when I create the users again, they get fresh configuration files.
I then assign rights to the old directories and can move anything back that
I want.

Within the last week I managed to get Mandrake 8.1 installed on my
newest computer. I used the expert install, and after a few initial
problems it seems to work, (except that I can't get to the virtual
terminals (1 thru 6) -- but that's the subject of a different post).

The intent of this post is to describe the biggest problem I had during
the installation, and find out if anybody else experiences similar
problems. In a way it's not a big deal, because I know how to work
around the problem. It's just that, when I mentioned the problem on
some mail lists about 18 months ago it was sort of pooh-poohed as if it
can't happen. I'm sure it can happen (although I might have the wrong
understanding of the cause), and it should be more well known and steps
 considered to overcome it.

My theory is that if you install (I don't mean upgrade) Linux on top of
an existing installation, the new installation does not totally wipe out
the previous installation, and, under the right circumstances, if you
had problems with the previous installation, you may have those same (or
similar) problems with the new installation. If you take certain steps
during the installation, you can avoid this problem.

For me, those certain steps have included:
* Rearranging the partition table so that no new partition is in the
same location (and size) as the same partition from the previous
installation. (Well, except for partitions like /home or Windows
 partitions.)
* Changing the file type of partitions (except for /home and Windows
 partitions).

 My recent experience:

The first time I tried to install Mandrake 8.1 I tried to install it on
the existing (Reiser) partitions from a 7.2 install. During the install
I went through the partitioning procedure merely (IIRC) adding the names
back to the partitions that already existed (and formatting those that I
did not intend to preserve, i.e., other than my /home and some windows
partitions that existed.) The install didn't work. (Can't recall all
the problems, don't think it even successfully booted.)

On the next try, I changed all the partitions except /boot from Reiser
to jfs (/boot is ext2). This time the install worked (well, reasonably
well -- I must remember not to test the SiS 630 video during the install
-- testing it causes problems on all Linux's I've tried since Mandrake
 7.2 (i.e., Redhat 7.2, Mandrake 8.0, troktopel 3, and Mandrake 8.1).

 My old experience:

During my first Linux installation efforts (about 18 months ago as I
experimented with a whole bunch of Linux distros before adopting
Mandrake 7.2) I found that I got better results if I rearranged the
partitions in the partition table so that no partition in the current
install matched a partition in the previous install (except for things
like /home or windows partitions.) If I did not do this, I often found
that a problem from the previous installation still existed in the new
installation, even if I thought I changed relevant options during the
install. If I did do this, I typically did not experience recurrence of
previous problems (unless I repeated a poor choice during the
 reinstallation).

 Randy Kramer

Background info (totally irrelevant, I think):
* The computer that demonstrates the problem most recently uses a
Duron 700 MHz. on a Matsonic MS8308EP motherboard with integrated video
(SiS 730/630), sound, and NIC -- but I'm using a different NIC to get
coax ethernet. 256 MB RAM. The experience from 18 months ago was with
 several different computers.

Re: [newbie] Setting up Winmodem/Linmodem under Mandake 8.1

2002-01-03 Per discussione Joseph Braddock

I don't have a winmodem with the Lucent chipset (mine uses PCTel), but even
after the drivers are installed, you still have to configure the irq and
stuff. Usually, if this is incorrect, you will get a device/busy error
message. The easiest way to configure the modem (after the drivers are
installed) is to open up a terminal or command shell, is an su command to
change to root and run modemconf. Select the option to detect and it
should do the rest. In case the drivers that came with mandrake are faulty,
you can go to linmodems.com and get the latest ones (and directions).

Re: [newbie] Linmodems

2001-12-16 Per discussione Joseph Braddock

Try this. Open a shell or terminal window. SU and then type/run modemconf.
This will display a window with an option to autodetect. Select it and if it
finds your modem, it will configure the /dev/modem appropriately. For
instance, under Windows98, my winmodem is on IRQ 3, under Linux, it is IRQ
15. Anyway, assuming it finds it, it means that a) you have the correct
driver installed and b) it should work for you after you accept the settings.
(if you get a command not found error, then you didn't SU before running it!)

Same basic configuration as me. Before we try anything more complicated,
you should go into the kppp , setup tab. In there, under 'device' you
 should try the /dev/tty0 or /dev/tty1 .

I believe KMail can import Outlook Express mail files directly. Also, while

Re: [newbie] Another Sound problem

I had intermittent sound problems under KDE until I told it to use OSS
instead of ALSA. The easiest way to check/change is to go to the
Configuration menu, then KDE, then Sound and finally, Sound Server. On the
General tab, make sure the Start aRTS Soundserver on KDE startup is checked
(if it's not, that's probably your problem). On the Sound IO tab, change the
method to Open Sound System (mine was autodetect). When you hit reply, it
will warn you something about possibly locking up apps using sound. If you
have any apps open close them and then tell it to restart the sound server.
You can go back to the General tab and press the Test Sound button to see if
it made a difference.

Re: [newbie] Win Partition

2001-10-28 Per discussione Joseph Braddock

If your errors are only on creating files, you are probably using the
default settings in /etc/fstab, your windows partition is mounting with
nosuid which means it shouldn't try to change the userid of any files it
creates. Unfortunately, it appears to ignore this and tries to change the
owner and errors. Even if you are in a group listed with access, it will
still use your user id as the owner and generate the number.LM mounts it
originally as root, so that is the owner. If you umount /mnt/windows and
then mount /mnt/windows, it should work. You could also set it to not auto
mount and then manually mount it.

Fwd: Re: [newbie] MODEMS vs Winmodems

2001-10-03 Per discussione Joseph Braddock

On Wednesday 03 October 2001 03:06 pm, you wrote:
Winmodems were produced to accomplish 2 things:

 1) Reduce the cost of computers by reducing the cost of the components.
Winmodems are much less expensive to produce since they lack the
circuitry of a real modem. It's basically just a interface to a phone
jack. The OS then has to act as the modem, putting asignificant load on
 the CPU.
Yes, the CPU can usually bear the load of doing the work the Modem is
supposed to. And if you're only interested in running games, and surfing
the net, then you won't notice this, and probably don't need Linux
anyway. Personally, I use my Linux boxes for other things, and I want
the hardware to do what it's supposed to, so that my CPU can do what
 it's supposed to.

That's not true. Winmodems came out at the same time as a number of digital
signal processing units. It was for cost savings because a given DSP with
the proper software could be a modem, soundcard, game controller or whatever.
It is true that DSP devices use the CPU and that's why they weren't practical
until high speed processors came out (actually 486). Think back to when
modems went from 28.8 to 33.6 to 56K in about 12 months. For 56K, there were
competing standards. Some modems had flash roms that could be updated, but
most didn't (as a side, if a modem uses software onboard to change the way it
works, isn't it still a software modem?). Updating flash roms was not
something most users wanted to do, nor was flash ram cheap. DSP devices
sought to solve that problem. No longer would you need to worry about modem
standards and features changing. Just download the latest driver and you
were ready to go.

As for speed degragation, lets be real. An older Pentium runs at 166MHZ the
most my modem (hard or soft) can do is 56K. The CPU utilization should be
minimal (even the drivers have a small footprint).

Nobody seems to slam ethernet cards because they have to run Samba to talk to
a Windows network. Wouldn't the connection be faster if the ethernet card
was hardwired for Samba?

 2) To marry you to Windows.
Once you're running Win(crap) hardware, you can't defect, and run an
alternative OS. Usually the cost inconvenience of upgrading that $100
speed demon box to a real computer is more than the average user will
bear. Thus cementing their aligence to M$. Afterall, why change when
M$(crap) is so cheap?!? Why should I spend more on hardware just to run
 Linux...

I bet if you did a survey, there are a lot more Linux boxes running on that
cheap hardware than on 2GHZ boxes.

If you want to run a real OS, you'll need real hardware. Haven't you
wondered why a workstation class machine is so much more expensive?
It's build to last, with quality parts. The bargain basement Multimedia
Windows desktop machines just don't have that quality. They're the ones
that cause so many people, so many odd problems.

I always thought that a workstation class machine is so much more expensive
because of proprietary parts and lack of competition, not because of the
quality.

The original IBM PC/XT was something like $4,000. An average midrange PC
today is in the $1,000 to $2,000 range. Using your reasoning, the XT is the
better hardware.

For the record, the purpose of my post was not to say that everyone should
embrace soft modems. The tendency on the list has been to slam them outright
instead of offering support to the person requesting help. That does a
disservice to the person asking the questions, discourages them from seeking
further help from this forum and ultimately discourages trying linux as an
alternative.

For the benefit of those who pay per minute for internet access and those
with slow connections, I do think it is time to let this topic die off.
Let's just agree to disagree.

Re: [newbie] MODEMS vs Winmodems

2001-10-02 Per discussione Joseph Braddock

Are you telling me that by hooking up an external modem through a serial
port, it's not taking any CPU cycles? Somehow, something in my computer has
to read that port and process the data to get it to my browser, email, or
hard drive. It might not use as much CPU cycles, but it uses some. Most
people using winmodems are coming from windows. To tell a prospective new
linux user to shell out $70 for an external (or internal) modem to run their
free software won't win many converts. It's kind of like Microsoft
offering free beta versions of software if you pay $19.95 for shipping and
handling.

I don't see how a design choice to minimize cost by utilizing excess CPU
cycles is somehow parasitic or evil. For the record, I did some tests of
using my winmodem and an external modem. For all practical purposes, the
throughput was identical (neither reached 53K due to phone line quality).
Neither seemed to slow down my system 450mhz AMD K62 196MB RAM.

If someone is running Mandrake, then they are running a minimum of a pentium
processor. Every adapter/peripheral in the computer uses CPU cycles to work.
For the average newbie, using a winmodem to surf the web and check email is
not going to be a resource hog for the CPU. If the CPU is so slow that a
winmodem is a burden for it, then the $70 for a new modem would be better
spent on a new motherboard/cpu.

I sometimes wonder if the Linux community came up with linmodems instead of
Windows, if there would be such an uproar over them. Yes, some of them can
be a pain to get them working, but there are many, many winmodems that
function quite well under Linux.

They're parasitic by design, trash the blood suckers, and buy a real
modem that does it's own work.

Winmodems can be a good choice, particularly for the cost concious. I
know that not all winmodems work with Linux, but many based on Lucent

If having to install the driver is what causes a problem in

Ironically, for people coming from Windows, having to install a driver

I guess, what I'm trying to say is that if someone request help in

modem doesn't answer their question and really isn't of much help.

Re: [newbie] GUI Pls.help!

2001-09-30 Per discussione Joseph Braddock

If you're hesitant to edit /etc/inittab, you can, while in KDE or Gnome, run
the Mandrake Control Center (should be on an icon on the desktop). From
their, select Boot Config (under Boot) and uncheck the box that says Launch
the X-Windows system at start. Doing so will have Mandrake make the change
to the /etc/inittab for you.

If you are just needing to go to the command line while in one of the GUIs,
you could just open up a terminal window under Terminals on the menu. There
are several to choose from. When through, type exit, to close the terminal
or shell.

You don't use Earthlink, do you? For some reason before upgrading to 8.1

be in the format eln/username (which IS how the dialer is set). For some

Whata PCTel chipset is on your 3Com modem? I've using several different

As for the Modem, externals are really no config.. linux conf has a modem
detect that creates a symlink that links /dev/ttysX to /dev/modem and
thats most of your config done there..

As for the internals, I have had some success with non PNP isa cards, but
you would very likely find an external easier to get sorted.

On another note, I have just bought my first linux distro,, I have been
using links for many many years, but always got it from somewhere, never
 paid for it before..

hopefully I will soon make a flawless leap from mdk7.2 and 2.2kernels to

I don't think you are gonna find a cheap OR a pci modem that does not
 require
any configuration. you might look at e-bay and find an old 28.8 external
cheap, and an external requires LESS config than PCI. I want a pizza maker

Re: [newbie] why won't panel KEEP mandrake launchers from menu

 it.

Re: [newbie] what is wrong with dependencies

2001-09-19 Per discussione Joseph Braddock

I agree 100%. I was simply trying to point out that auto-updating
dependencies would create the problems that Window$ has. To solve a real
problem (incompatible DLLs), Microsoft has opted to go the hardware route --
hard drives are cheap. Unfortunately, it still doesn't solve the problem,
and unless you use all Windows XP apps you still will be faced with the
problem (but that's probably part of M$ marketing campaing).

Apple OS X and Linux/Unix have approached this problem from a different angle
and is much preferred.

While having to deal with dependencies can be frustrating, at times,
installing a new app doesn't break existing ones (well, unless you use
--force :)).

  them in their own

 folder.

This is a VERY BAD idea. All it does is lead to resource (drive space,
memory, CPU usage, etc.) wastage. Why is The GIMP only about 20MB when
inatalled, while Adobe Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro can take up hundreds of
megs? Because The GIMP relies on what's already there. The developers don't
have to bother with reinventing the wheel; they can use shared libraries
like libjpeg and libpng to do simple things like displaying images, giving
coders more time to improve their own app. If you upgrade your libjpeg
(which can display JPEGs) and libpng (which can display PNGs), you will be
upgrading _all_ the applications that use those libs, including Mozilla and
 Konqueror.

Re: [newbie] MODEM

2001-09-16 Per discussione Joseph Braddock

As others have stated, ideally, you would use an external or real internal
modem (versus a Winmodem). That said, either of those options tend to be
expensive. I have had very good luck with several several different brands
of Winmodems that are based on the PCTel chipset. There are drivers on the
internet for it, and it's simple to compile and install them. Being a
Winmodem, they also work fine with Windows 98.

The best news, is that they are very inexpensive. I just purchased another
one for $6 (plus $9 shipping) from www.pcbuyerclub.com. There is a link for
the drivers on www.linmodems.org. I believe it is called Jan's PCTel
Resources.

Re: [newbie] Switching to KDE 22 usual look and feel

You need to run the Login Manager (in KDE it's under the control center, I'm
not sure where it is in Gnome). Select the Sessions tab and at the lower
part of the window, type KDE for the new type and click the Add new button.
KDE must be in all caps. Save the settings and log out and see if selecting
KDE now works. Assuming it does, go back to the Login Manager and remove the
entry for KDE 22.
