I bought a condo in the NE section in 2004. It is down from what I paid, I am

to be closer to work since 2008, but enjoying Asbury in the meantime. Fingers

[AsburyPark] Re: 2003

2011-10-28 Thread fancypaaantz
I came in 2004, America's Cup was not here until much later. In 2004, there was
Harry's Roadhouse, Rock Paper Scissors, Be Green and Janet's boutique on
Cookman, with a few other things. When did America's Cup open? 2008? When I
first moved here, I just parked on Lake bc there was always parking over there
at that time.

Quite honestly, I kind of avoided Cookman BC of the parking situation in more
recent years. I could never find a spot and I find that annoying if I just want
to run in somewhere for something quick. So, I think it really cuts both ways.

Asbury is a ghost town, I spoke to a number of Cookman retailers, business is
down since the meters went into effect. It reminds me of 8 years ago when we
bulls some stores and rented them, then America's cup opened and we sat there
waiting for a customer to come in...and waited and waited and waited. The
merchants that are still there, and almost all the current merchants are hard
working business people, not weekend warriors looking for a tax write off by
opening a store...and then never opening. The high taxes, the extraordinary
cost of opening a business in AP, and now the parking meters that don't even
work are a detriment to downtown Asbury in a huge way. Occupay AP should be
railing against this travesty of a money grab by the powers that be in city
 hall.

OAP's mission statement claims WE HAVE NO LEADER

What a joke. This just dilutes the actually OWS movement, which itself

it's becoming a trendy thing to do.

I have to admit ... the last (10) or so responses were great. A Carousel in
the Casino Area but will the Revision Theater find a permanenet home? They
are going strong there now ... I have been to EVERY show as alot of locals.
Its been great. A Ferris Wheel would be a winner but at what location? It
seems the area north of the Convention Center may be next testing ground with
some new ventures? Each season for the last (5) seasons I have lived here
part-time and the beach crowd has grown exponentially. Some businesses have
failed but some have survived that are not food related. Of course alot of
traffic from Ocean Grove which really has no good mix of restaurants or night
life. That new breakfast place Toast has been a hit ... ask any Ocean Grover
full time in this town if he/she has not heard of it or even been there. That
Beerfest last weekend reached its maximum allowable capacity for the event of
2,200 people and sold out. I was shut out trying to get in there from the
6-10PM session. Probably with another 500 or so people like myself wanting to
get inside this event. I think what makes AP unique now is the current
diversification that few other beach resorts can match even at this time. We
can only hope this success can spread WEST into the city season after season
and all this revenue can revitilize areas TO THE WEST.

[AsburyPark] Re: unsold condos...

2011-09-21 Thread fancypaaantz
My house is techinically a condo, converted in 2004 with the 5 units in the
front house. Hard to comp. It is near North Beach, 2 bed, 2 bath, no tax
abatement, taxes around 6K (down from 8k- I fought the law and I won). I do not
want to default. My understanding is NJ is a recourse state, so I will owe the
money anyway and destroy my credit. I can *probably* qualify for another
mortgage, looking into that now. SO, I will buy a small house closer to work in
a town where I can send my kid to school and use Asbury as a rental. Although I
am not too keen on being a LL. I am NOT handy at ALL. And I will likely move a
bit away. I would like to keep Asbury as a second home, but with child care
costs etc, I do not think I can really swing it. But anyway, the point is that
when those North Beach units sit and are a little over $300k with a tax
abatement OCEANFRONT, that just depresses everything else. My place could be
worth $100K less than what I paid for it 7 years ago. And if a condo board is
not flush with cash, the buyer you find may not be able to get a mortgage
anyway. More new units that come on and sit, the more the older ones get
depressed. I know the plan is the plan, but I am not real sure what the
incentive is to keep building what people do not seem to want to buy. If Asbury
becomes more and more a place where people want to go (amusements, Stone Pony
etc) THEN maybe people will want to buy luxury condos.

that does little for you. I think I saw a 2 bed there going for 309k. That

Wesley grove is advertising 4 unsold. Not sure which units. At least one I

MM is for $339,00. With tax abatement taxes are only around $5000.

Griffin - maybe 15 units up. Not sure. A $649,000 unit there, taxes are
 looking at $7700.

While at the Blu, a $256000 blowout price, taxes are $7,000.

MLS shows 91 condos for sale, which includes some listed here, but not all

Well, that's the real bullshit and why the system is screwed up.

I inquired the other day about refinancing from 6% on my home down to 7-7.5

What a joke. I currently pay, on time, a mortgage on tiny equity loan on my
home, and mortgages, on time, on 3 rentals with 3 mortgages and another small
equity line that is closed. Car loans, one existing - never late. Cards, paid
off or on time. On own a couple houses free and clear. Like a schmuck I

I had one f-up a tax lien that I paid off sooner then I had to. That;s

My point is, RENTALS, priced to rent, will rent.

It;s one of the lastest trends in housing and that's why there's money
 going into it.

Rental owner Developing the rental and holding it for themselves. It's where
the old farts after WWII made their money and many of those families never
 sold these investments.

Also note with banks, if you are a total disaster, they have an incentive to
work with you, but if you are not, they won't. So, I posed the following to the
bank, as a hypothetical... I said, what if I owe say $300K and I find a buyer
on my own for $270K. Can I work out a payment plan for the $30K that I owe? No.
All loans will be due upon the sale. So, you would rather people default on
purpose, have to sell the house, institute legal proceedings to recover the
difference etc rather than allow people to pay off their debts with little
inconvenience to the bank? Makes no sense.

So, yeah, bring on more condos :)

I have not really explored it but my understanding is that if you can pay, they
have no incentive to work with you re: short sale or modification. And unless
there are dire circumstances, why destroy credit, have tax implications, open
youself up to legal action, etc.? I think it is just better to wait it out.
However, that being said, my concern with this plan is that the local home
values will continue to go down if more condos flood the market and do not
sell. Eventually, the units will be filled with tenants instead of home owners,
etc.

just going to be more and more of this with all of our property values getting

I hope it works out, re the short sale and I am sorry for your situation. That
is why I thought it was funny when I said to the bank, hey, what if I find my
own buyer and I do not even ask for a short sale, but I just pay off whatever
the difference is monthly, and they said, eh No! I was like, wait so you would
rather I default on purpose?

I have friends where the husband lost his job and their financial situation is
a total disaster bc of that obviously. They were able to get a loan
modification. But, if you can pay, and it is just the situation that you need
to move on... I think the bank is far more willing to just let me take out more
money, rather than work with me to square the debt I already have.

Has anybody noticed the new gang tags that have been appearing around the
city recently? At Library Square Park, somebody spray painted MDP at each
of the trash containers at the 4 corners of the park.

What is MDP? MDP is short for Murder Dem Pussies

This same tag is spreading fast. There's a new Latin restaurant on Bond
street that opened about a week ago, and somebody tagged it in the past few
 days.

This is not good news, because it signifies a subset of a gang staking out
 territory.

2011-09-20 Thread fancypaaantz
Putting the specifics of the plan aside, which I have now reviewed, has anyone
ever mentioned a time frame? When do people think that the plan will be fully
realized (if ever). 20 years? I am not trying to be argumentative here, I am
curious to hear whether people in this group (1) think these blocks will ever
actually be developed like that and (2) if so, when? Whether I agree with the
specifics of of the plan or not (and I do not agree with a relocated Stone
Pony), my bigger concern is this pattern of tearing stuff down and starting
projects to either never finish them, or to have blocks of vacant luxury
condos. For example, wasn't the Wonder Bar almost torn down? And thankfully it
wasn't and it is a fun place, and the Yappy Hour I saw was super busy. That
operating motel was torn down and nothing built there, right? From when I moved
here in 2004, the stores on Kingsley have been vacant. It looked like not long
before 2004 there was at least a little deli or something there. Will the Lanes
be torn down only to have a vacant lot? At the very least, if people will go in
and tear down and/or remove existing businesses, please make sure something
viable will go in its place.

[AsburyPark] Re: Pony, WB, Tillie, Istar etc

2011-09-20 Thread fancypaaantz
How much of North Beach is unsold? Because I never see many lights in that
place. And there are a couple of units I keep an eye on (bc they are comps of
my place, sort of) and they have seriously been on/off the market for 3 years.
I am considering turning my place into a rental bc I can't sell.

The Stone Pony. In the first Bankrutpcy filing and sale, the arguments were
for the name , the annex and online use. At least I thought so.

It is a brand. the original location is where it is but a look and
feel could be duped. I know, it and other real clubs can't get that same
feel. The sounds are in the walls.

You all think the casino. You already have a almost never used venue.
Convention Hall. Stone Pony Concert Series at the new year round stage for
 large events - CH.

I'd guess that somewhere there some doodles done for a SP move to CH somehow.

Wonder Bar. Great name, fun place, location. Can you build up and over it?
Many of you don't recall how it sat for years boarded and locked up a big
 grey box.

Then there's that face thing. The Tillie brand. easily duplicated to bars,
 shirts and toilet seats.

Then don't forget the downtown. Sackman's ventures clearly have had a huge
 impact.

As for empty condos - that is a real debatable question. Are they really
empty? You can't find a one bedroom rental. Sure sales at original prices
have long disappeared, but AP can support and shown support for modern
rentals in a higher price range.

If someone comes along and follows some current trends in multifamily rental
design, you should have units from $1000 and up per month easily filled - and
all in one clevery designed building or groups of buildings.

You'd have to think, out of all the other developers over the years who
thought about AP, I-Star may be the most financially capable...

[AsburyPark] Re: Committee Meeting

2011-09-19 Thread fancypaaantz
Well The Pony has been there for a while with residential use nearby. I can
hear certain concerts from my house on 6th. I guess I have an issue with
putting even more residential in now when there is so much sitting on the
market already. Entertainment may be the way to go.

--- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, dfsavgny dfsavgny@... wrote:

The issue, in my opinion is that an outdoor concert venue is incompatible

Yes there is soundproofing etc, but intense entertainment uses are
incompatible with residences. I dont think you can have residences in the
ocean blocks along with intense entertainment uses. You have to choose. The
Stone Pony can stay (the building and be incorporated in a larger development
but I think that if you want to develop residences on that block then the
outdoor performance stage has to go to the demolished Casino site. How great
it would be to have something like the Jones Beach theatre on that site. I
only do this for a living.

Dont let folks twist what the committee was trying to do. It would have been
counterproductive to have public in before hand. Even at the meeting the
other night folks were complaining and discussing issues that had nothing to
do with what was within the purview or consideration of the committee.

Those trying twist have sour grapes. Been here decades and let their
properties fall into disrepair and complain about others that try to make
 improvements.

My feeling is, hopefully we do not get a storm surge and the flooding is not so
bad. But... if it is a worse case scenario and you need to be rescued, then you
are not only in danger but you put those who may need to rescue you in danger.
For me, I removed my valuables to the extent I really have any, set the alarm
and I hope for the best. (And I have insurance and took video of what the house
looked like before leaving for the insurance) I have a young child and I would
not want to put anyone in danger. I think the issue with this storm is how slow
moving it is and how much rain and surge it could generate. I saw Deal Lake
overflow from just heavy rain. The looting is hopefully what the curfew is
meant to prevent.

HURRICANE WARNING NOW IN EFFECT FOR THE NJ COAST. PREPARATIONS TO
PROTECT LIFE AND PROPERTY SHOULD BE RUSHED TO COMPLETION
At 5:00 am Hurricane Irene was located about 700 miles south of the NJ
coast with maximum sustained winds of 110 mph. The hurricane has deepened
overnight as evidenced by a drop in central pressure (943mb) however this
deepening has translated into a more expansive wind field rather than
   higher
winds around the center. Hurricane force winds now extend outward from
the center by almost 100 miles and tropical storm force winds extend
   outward
   about 300 miles.
Forecast guidance overnight has changed very little as far as the track
is concerned and Irene is still forecast to track over or just east of
  the
NJ coast. At this point there should be little focus on the track since
Irene is such a large storm, there will be major effects from the storm
   regardless.
One important trend overnight is to accelerate Irene just a bit. This
has a significant impact in that it is going to bring the worst of
  Irene's
wrath closer to that all important Sunday 7am high tide. Irene's closest
passage looks to NJ looks to be between 8am and 11am and any further
acceleration is going to bring that window right into the high tide
  period.

Rain will begin Saturday afternoon. Rain and increasing wind will begin
around or just after midnight Saturday night. The worst of the hurricane
will occur between 4am and Noon on Sunday when wind gusts of 80mph may
   occur.
Winds will back to the west after Irene passes our latitude and remain
gusty Sunday afternoon but skies will likely begin to clear.
Rainfall totals of 5 to 10 inches, with isolated amounts approaching 15
inches, are expected throughout the state.
A storm surge of 3 to 6 feet is forecast by the National Weather Service
which will result in dangerous coastal flooding, complete washover of
beaches and the potential for damage to boardwalks, piers and other
   beachfront

deepening has translated into a more expansive wind field rather than
higher
winds around the center. Hurricane force winds now extend outward from
the center by almost 100 miles and tropical storm force winds extend
outward
about 300 miles.
Forecast guidance overnight has changed very little as far as the track
is concerned and Irene is still forecast to track over or just east of

NJ coast. At this point there should be little focus on the track since
Irene is such a large storm, there will be major effects from the storm

One important trend overnight is to accelerate Irene just a bit. This
has a significant impact in that it is going to bring the worst of
   Irene's

closest

Oak, a lot of these programs are only available in the poorest areas, so again
you are still talking about the concentration of poverty/segregation. Here is
the head start for Bergen County, it is in a couple of spots, none in the

The Head Start Program in Monmouth County is administered by Acelero

includes education, health screenings and nutritious meals. Home based
services and a summer program are also available. Head Start also provides

I think they get around $6 million,

[AsburyPark] Re: Upperclass boardwalk and downtown?

2011-08-13 Thread fancypaaantz
To have section 8 or housing vouchers you need rental properties. Many NJ towns
do not have rentals. See Wyckoff, Franklin Lakes, Skillman, or very few.

I would prefer public assistance benefits be contingent on job/career training
and job placement.

Abbot districts do have free preschool at age 3, in other towns nothing and
there is nothing I know of from 0-3. There are some subsidies available in
poorer areas like Jersey City.

My friends are applying for the NJ health insurance for their children bc her
husband lost his job. Problem is, they live in Ridgewood and those doctors
don't take the insurance.

There is a segregation, poverty is concentrated. So, while there are services
available in those areas, the same are not available elsewhere. I think that
the concentration of poverty and forced segregation is a big part of the
problem.

neglectful dad as a human ATM or a sperm donor.
Accordingly, his measures target both the young attackers and their parents

Nutter signed an order temporarily moving the curfew to 9 p.m. Fridays and
Saturdays for everyone under the age of 18 in targeted enforcement districts.
They are in Center City, the downtown area, and University City, the West
Philadelphia neighborhood where the University of Pennsylvania is located.
Throughout the rest of the city, the curfew will remain 10 p.m. for those
under the age of 13 and those for minors under the age of 18.
Minors who are caught breaking curfew will be sent home, brought home or
transported to a police station where their parents will be contacted. Minors
may be issued a citation with a $100 to $300 fine for a first offense, the
city said in a press release.
Parents will receive a first-violation notice and then will be fined up to
 $500 for successive violations.
These notices and citations will be issued when the parent comes to collect
their child from the police station.
If parents don't come for their child within a reasonable time, police will
contact the Department of Human Services to start an investigation.
Parents whose child under the age of 18 is found liable or guilty by a court
for injury, theft or other criminal acts will be liable to the person who
suffered the injury or loss of property.
Parents and legal guardians will be subject imprisonment for up to 90 days
 for repeat curfew violation offenses.
Ramsey said Friday the first offense will most likely prompt a warning, with
fines to follow for other curfew violations. If they come down and start to
assault people or damage property we are going to arrest them.
Up to the beginning of the school year next month, police will maintain a
greater presence in the targeted enforcement areas and work to improve camera
surveillance. It will also expand weekend hours at recreation centers.

Mr. Fashions is now on Route 35.

Sister Sue's was a lovely restaurant that I frequented often. I was very sad to

A large group wearing red bandanas went to the Beach Bar, but were denied
access. This turned into a large fight which resulted in a guy being stabbed
in the legs and stomach. This whole event was witnessed by one of my local
sound engineer friends. The injured guy crawled away leaving a trail of
blood. Meanwhile, the fight went on, and my friend saw one male point a gun

drawn, and shots fired, but nobody was hit. When the fight was over, my
friend watched as the blood was being bleached off of the boardwalk.

[AsburyPark] Re: Upperclass boardwalk and downtown?

2011-08-12 Thread fancypaaantz
The problem is the inherent conflict with gentrification. The rich move in
and displace the poor. The city, powers that be, investors wants
gentrification because it makes money and turns the city around. The community
wants it to the extent it makes a community safer, prettier, increases property
values, etc. But, the displaced don't want to be displaced... And where will
people be displaced to? Here's my two cents. The problems that Asbury faces are
not Asbury problems, they are New Jersey problems, they are United States
problems. Poverty is a bigger problem than just Asbury, Camden, and Newark...
The solution for a long time has been projects, Section 8, welfare,
concentrating that poverty into specific areas, in specific cities, with
terrible schools. Then we tried to fix the schools with Abbott, but we did not
fix the root problems- poverty, violence, gangs, and addiction. I think to fix
it, we would have to break up the concentration of poverty, but on a much
larger scale. Provide affordable (Section 8) housing in every town allowing
people to choose where they want to live, in every school district, provide
real job training and career counseling in addition to welfare benefits, public
daycare facilities so that moms can return to work, along with affordable
healthcare, mental healthcare, addiction counseling, and reproductive
healthcare/counseling. In essence, stop trying to concentrate the have nots
into a ghetto where poverty will continue to beget poverty and violence begets
violence, but rather to shift our mindset to enable all towns and all cities to
provide opportunities to those who could benefit from those opportunities. I
remember being in a philosophy class where we said that if we could design a
society not knowing where in that society we would be born, we would all design
one where the bottom is not that bad. Now, in the USA our bottom is not as bad
as in other countries. I have walked through a crowded train station in India
and been surrounded by children with bloated bellies begging for food. But, our
bottom is not as good as some other places. There was a lot of talk about
socialism and not being like Europe or Canada during the last election. Well,
what do we want to be? How can we foster upward mobility while also creating a
society where the bottom is not so bad? I do know that if we just focus on this
as an Asbury problem, we are not going to really get anywhere. I don't think we
would ever see real change unless and until we tackle it on a much bigger
scale, but that will never happen in this political climate.

I believe, for the most part, everyone is concerned about young people,
violence, guns, poverty, etc. But when you live in a place for long enough and
read these stories over and over again, it is just natural to get a little
weary of it. I think most people, where ever they live, just want to live their
lives, safely and with as little worry as possible. We all bought (or live in,
or visit) a changing area that has some big problems, and after years of
reading the same stories over and over, I think most people do not know what
they can do other than just take care of themselves.

I bought here 7 years ago. I do not want any young people to suffer. If I could
change the world or even just New Jersey, I would. I have ideas about how as
well. I could be the biggest, open-hearted, save the world liberal there is.
But, the flip side of that coin, is that I invested in a house 7 years ago that
I can't sell now without owing the bank a ton of money. I now have a two year
old and I am concerned with her safety living here. I know that I can't send
her to school here when she gets older. I work more than full time to provide
for my child as a single mother. I am tired and I just want to take care of my
child in a safe place. I do not want to worry about people breaking into my
house or getting mugged or carjacked (esp with my child in the back seat).

In sum, I think it is terribly unfair to accuse a bunch of people who live,
work, or just enjoy and invest in Asbury Park as being racists because they are
worried about their own interests. A lot of of us took a chance to move here,
lost our shirts financially, and now have to think of our own interests.

Jack, I think what he is saying is, since our conversation was about Vespas,

Getting away from the race issue for a second... This is a gentrifying
community. There have been a ton or condos flooded onto the market in the past
however many years. Why do you think people want to move to a gentrifying
community? It is for the positives of course! People move to be close to the
beach, boardwalk, and yes the Stone Pony (entertainment). Housing is a bit
cheaper here than in other beach communities because of the other issues
(namely crime). I do not think many people would say, I want to move to Asbury
Park and start a business or renovate an old house because I feel like being in
the midst of gang violence. I am sure there are some who came here to do great
things, and I am sure many people are doing great things, but there are many
people who just came here to live/work at the beach and there is nothing wrong
with that either! Their tax dollars are paying the city and their dollars at
the local establishments are making changes.

This is also a group to speak about Asbury Park, so with all due respect, I am
not sure it is appropriate to discuss white collar criminals generally unless
they have something specifically to do with Asbury Park.

I do recall many threads here about the various companies involved here and the
alleged mishandling of things that have nothing to do with our street crime
issues.

Finally, Jack has spoken about what he sees and what his experience is here as
we all do. That is entrely appropriate.

Sometimes (as a group) we complain about lighting, or parking, or meters, or
crime or safety or a new restaurant, or whatever. Isn't that what this group is
for?

2. For some reason, people just can't grasp the concept of cameras.
Meanwhile, Hinge pointed out that cameras on private citizens house

install cameras in many parts of town.

3. Asbury has an image problem. It doesn't take a consultant to tell

[AsburyPark] Re: Black Like Me

2011-08-10 Thread fancypaaantz
First of all, I am not sure you even know the racial backgrounds of the various
posters in this group. I don't.

Second, you don't know and are making assumptions about all of us. I was raised
in the 70s by very socially liberal parents- very Free to Be You and Me, love
everyone, don't judge.

You are trying to read between the lines about what I, or others, have posted
to try to see something that probably isn't there, all while making blatant
judgments against US.

I like Asbury. I moved here, bought a house here, pay my taxes, license my dog,
pick up garbage in my yard, keep my house clean etc. My *true* feelings are
that I am a bit weary of all the crime and it saddens me. I want to feel safe
where I live, as do most people. I don't know how to make it better, other than
just living my life the best way I can, be a good neighbor, call the police if
needed etc. I had a similar conversation with a neighbor who just moved to
Holmdel before her 6 year old starts first grade (Spanish). I had many
conversations with close friends who started a business here and and renovated
a house on the West side (bi-racial). Other neighbors are moving next week
because they are sick of crime (another bi-racial couple). Or another business
person who also lived in town and sent kids to private school (bi-racial
family, has not\w moved I believe).

The bottom line is that if people came here- for whatever reason- and complain
about crime- or whatever- that doesn't make them racists! And not everyone
needs to be an activist is in order to NOT be a racist. Most people just do the
best they can.

Walk on Ocean or the BW after dark, cross in front of the Berk Hotel, cross

[AsburyPark] Re: Neighborhood watch - we call the police

2011-08-05 Thread fancypaaantz
My house which is techinically a condo is condo'd with the mansion house on
the same property. 5 units in the mansion and I am #6. Anyway, a few years
back, someone broke into the basement of the mansion and stole the washer and
dryer (common to all units). No one saw them. It is really kind of crazy to
think of people walking off with a new washer and dryer out of a house or other
large appliances! It was during the day too. I just picture these guys pushing
a washer and dryer down the street on some kind of rollers and no one saying
anything.

The car jacking last week took place on Bergh right across the street from

light there in years, and there's been quite a few cars broken into.
A neighbor two doors away recently installed a 5 camera video surveillance
system and it caught the car jacking in detail, and the video was used by the
APPD to help apprehend one of the two suspects involved. The person who got
away was the spotter who was in another car.

One thing to watch for, its a known technique among AP's resident
thieves...they work in groups of 2 or 3, 1 rides a bike and is the spotter,
the others are the thieves breaking into the homes. The spotter will ride
up and down the street keeping a lookout, while on his cell phone. Staying
on the cell to keep in contact with the thieves in the house..so if you

Subject: [AsburyPark] Neighborhood watch - we call the police

I moved to the northwest section of AP 3 months ago, and I love living
here. What's upsetting lately, though, is the increase of burglaries
  taking place in our neighborhood.

Two weeks ago, my next door neighbor's house was burglarized. The thieves
stole their new washer/dryer, dishwasher, and tried to take the stove but
it wouldn't fit through the door. I was away for the weekend and the
neigbhor's primary residence is in Manhattan. No one saw a thing, or at
least -- no one called police. The contractors working on the house
  discovered the burglary Monday morning.

Last night, I was out on my deck with 2 friends, and 2 men entered the
(same) neighbor's backyard and walked up to the back door as if they lived
there. As I called the police, my friend said to them, Excuse me, sir?
What are you doing there? You don't live there. One of the men said, I'm
checking on it for them... I'm checking the door... I work for the City...
Police arrived within minutes and spoke to the 2 men, who supposedly live
on Prospect behind me. I do not know the outcome of their conversation,
but believe me -- my neighbors did not ask these two to check on the house.

So the moral of the store is: if something doesn't look right, it probably
isn't. CALL THE POLICE. The increased presence will hopefully get the
  message across to would-be burglars...

I have Atlantic Security and Fire, http://www.atlanticsecuritynj.com/

It is a monitored system. Alarm goes off, they call within about 30 seconds. If
I don't give them the right code or answer the phone fast enough, police
dispatched. The one time I didn't get to the phone bc of technical difficulties
cops were there in about 2 minutes. VERY FAST. You know then as well if there

To paint a pic... I am a 37 yr old woman (although I think I do not look a day
over 25). I am 5'3, about ugghhh 120 lbs. Basically the least intimidating
person. Ever. I just walked from the Stone Pony to my house on 6th. I do have
to say I am very comfortable in urban environments- hell if I can land at the
New Delhi, India airport on my own, surely I can handle Asbury Park. On my
travels at 1130 pm, I passed a gay couple having an argument and a heavy-set
woman walking her pug. What's my point? Yeah, the lines aren't straight, the
parking sucks, but at least it IS getting better. I am not afraid. You should
not be either and that IS progress.

Good advice! You can be friends with the city of Asbury Park on facebook, and
the mayor posts messages. People then have been commenting on the mayor's
posts- most have been very negative obviously. We live in a country that is not
Iraq- we can question our leaders. Not all of us have the inclination or the
time to be local politicians, but if we live here we can say something and we
can vote. We need to hold our leaders accountable.

[AsburyPark] Re: iraq or ap

2010-12-30 Thread fancypaaantz
Ok, I have to say again. Yes, this is not Iraq, nor are we trapped in a mine or
suffering after Hurricane Katrina BUT just because our situation is not a
million other horrible situations that are obviously much worse is irrelevant.
The issue is simple. There is no comparing it to any other disaster or other
situation. We had a snow storm. We live in a state that gets snow storms
periodically. We have a right to ask why our town cannot handle snow removal
without thinking Well, I wonder why my street is a mess four days after a
storm, but I shouldn't complain because at least I am not in a refugee camp in
central Africa. I drove today. AP is MUCH worse than any place else I drove. I
walked around with the dog a bit too and it was FREAKING INSANE. People walking
like zombies down the center of streets that are still snow covered on day 4.
Come on. Yes, this is not the black plague or a nuclear disaster, but that
doesn't mean we shouldn't complain about why our town can't seem to remove
snow. If we were hit by a giant tidal wave, I wouldn't ask the mayor why my
street was a mess, but this is snow. And snow that was from a storm that was
predicted DAYS in advance. Why was there no plan? Where were the plows?

I have an idea. People at the Jersey shore think we don't get snow. So, when we
do, it is a big shock. So, here is my advice. The next time the Weather channel
says that we may get a big snow storm, get the powers that be together in a
room and come up with an action plan before the first flake. And don't treat
the residents of AP like they don't matter.

And the the funny thing is,the way the snow has drifted, it is really deep
between my front door and the driveway, but after I put my daughter to sleep, I
suited up to start tackling it. We have no garage or storage so the snow shovel
was placed in this little space on the side of the house. The way the snow blew
though- it blew into that little space and it is as high as I am in there (that
has never happened before) so the shovel is hidden and the snow is too deep for
me to get in and try to find it! :) Ugghh Bah humbug!

Esp since AP is a relatively small city that is basically a grid. Plows and

I'm taking your question as facetious. Waiting until there is several feet

The proper process is to start sanding/salting when snowfall starts. Followed
by clearing during the storm so that accumulations on streets do not occur
leading to the stuck vehicles you mention.

Dealing with a heavy snowfall is s much art as it is science and requires
 experienced leadership to be effective.

Waiting until a storm is over and then trying to address it is clearly
 irresponsible.
Certainly there can be extenuating circumstances (available resources,
equipment/manpower), but the basic process is well known.

I don't think the problem is about driving cars around. If people have an
emergency, vehicles can't get through. Others NEED to get to work (either
because they are are nurses/doctors or bc they are simply supporting their

well and good to walk around and be peaceful about it, but I don't keep a ton

2010-12-27 Thread fancypaaantz

Arg. I saw one go by last night but I don't think they've plowed 6th ave since.
I got a *red alert* phone call from the police last night and again today. The
one today (recorded message) apologized for the lack of services and that they
would be contacting outside contractors. We are still totally snowed in. My mom
in North Jersey lives on a quiet dead-end street and she was plowed out. This
is crazy!

2010-11-12 Thread fancypaaantz
I live here year round and I have a child who is a toddler. I work in NYC 3
days a week, and at home 2 days. Commuting into the city is horrible and the
schools are a huge deterrent. So is the crime -- once you have kids, things
change in that regard as well. I would like to move, to be honest, but I am
waiting for the market to get a bit better first. There are MANY things I love
about AP, but for new families to move in, the negatives still outweigh the
positives at this point. I think rentals would be better, to attract the
younger 20 somethings first who want to live somehwere cool with an awesome
music scene and stuff to do. Then when enough of those 20 somethings stay and
have children, the schools will change... Like Hoboken!

[AsburyPark] Re: Not in AP.....

2010-11-12 Thread fancypaaantz
For those of us who have kids, but would never send their kids to AP schools, I
think it is wrong to assume that is based on any kind of white fear. I would
not send my daughter to the AP schools bc they stink. Plain and simple. (The
Hope Academy is not ranked very well either.) If I stay here, I will send her
to the Ranney School bc I want her to go to an Ivy League school or MIT (if she
so chooses), not a local community college. I have talked with other parents
of all colors and no one with means will send their kids to the AP schools
whatever race, or will for early years and then they are out. I hope my
daughter is smart and I want her to be challenged, and I don't think she would
be in the public schools here where a huge percentage of the students do not
even test as proficient in core subjects!

It is a chicken and egg thing like I said. Tommy DeSeno outlined it here a
couple of years ago. AP schools became defacto segregated. If the grammar
schools get turned around the high school will follow. But AP schools share
the same socio-economic problems as most urban schools in poor neighborhoods.
How do you fix it? Short of gentrification which really does not solve the
problem for those who move out to another non-gentrifying area, no one has
seem to come up to the answer. So I see AP for some years as not being a full
time family place. Solve the school equation and you have it licked.

But you know, as long as the schools are made safe, they would be okay. I
assume there are a lot of dedicated teachers. My neice just started teaching
at Hope and she is excellent and a former NYC teacher who taught in similar
neighborhoods. My daughter teaches in Brooklyn (special ed) and her students
are mainly immigrant children. I see the tide turning already with many
immigrants going to AP schools in uniforms.

And if we are honest with ourselves, a lot of it is just WHITE FEAR. And I am
no one to talk because my kids went to catholic schools while even living in
a white middle class neighborhood. But me and my wife went to catholic
grammar and high schools and so did our kids.

My house (it is a carriage house about 1200 sq feet give/take, it is a
condo with 5 units in the Mansion house) was billed in AP at almost
$8000/year. It was lowered then til about $6k, but yeah if I had to pay another
couple of grand on top of that for the crappy schools system I would be pissed.
The funny thing, was that before they condo'd teh lot, the whole thing with the

Anyone else get a call (recording) on their phone about how there have been
lots of breakins (car and home) and to be alert, report suspicious activity
etc...

The only way it ends is for everyone to call the cops when they see anything
AND for the cops to give people a hard time. When the area gets too hot, the
bad guys will go elsewhere. We also need landlords and such to want to bring
there places up to code and rent to people who are not junkies and dealers..
And they need to break up the school system and integrate with Ocean or another
wealthier school district. Really section 8 should be broken up state-widec
and spread out everywhere. As long as we keep our poor segregated, poverty
begets more poverty and it really doesn't change.

Although FYI- pit bulls scare people but they are bred, ironically, to be super

2010-07-16 Thread fancypaaantz
Although our dog LOOKS like a pit, we believe he is an American Bulldog (mixed
with something else non-bully) and they're a little different from an APBT.
Hobie barks ferociously when anyone approaches the house (like a good guard
dog), even if I am there. I actually have to put him in the bathroom when
guests come because he scares the crap out of people (then he calms down after
a couple of minutes and I let him out). If he were out, and I was there, he
would just sniff them until he decided they were ok and that's that. We've
never had an actual aggression problem with this dog, he doesn't need a muzzle
at the vet/groomer, and he generally likes everyone he meets. It is just the
look of him, and his confidence and barking that is scary, but that is what
makes him a good guard dog. If someone tried breaking in my house, they would
be confronted with a 70+ lb white pit looking thing barking very ferociously
and I think that would keep them out!

2009-01-21 Thread fancypaaantz
No, I meant it will be gone bc they no longer play that music any
more. Why would they sponsor concerts at the Pony for bands that they
do not play? As for their ratings- well all radio ratings are down.
Don't know how much better a Z100 wannabe station would do. At least
they had a niche. Now, they are just another station playing the same
stuff as a number of other stations. If you look at the APP article,
there are a larger number of comments about the change, almost 100%
negative. There is a Save GRock group on facebook that has 3500
members and there were more than 1500 sigatures on the petition when I
signed it. Hey, it may all be in vain, but their spokesperson said
that local support for their change was critical

Or said another way, everyone here is always talking about AP and its
music scene. Well, a huge part of the music scene here (Pony,
Convention Hall) and at Starland is alternative. Beyonce will not be
playing at the Pony any time soon. But the one station that would
sponsor shows and announce shows at these venues is now gone. I think
that is a loss to our music scene.

[AsburyPark] Re: Official!

2008-11-05 Thread fancypaaantz
I have to say that last night was such a wonderful night. I had
voted for Obama in the primary and I eagerly cast my vote yesterday
at 6am. When I got home from work, I put on the tv first thing and
cheered as the results came in.

For all that our country has gotten wrong lately, it is incredibly
positive that a man who was not born into wealth and privilege, and
who has dedicated his adult life to public service, can go from the
child of a single-mother to the president of the US. Amazing. And he
did it with the help of regular people, donating $20 here, $10 there.

Then I read the comments that have been flying around on this board
today, and the comments on App.com ,and I am horrified. Racism
galore and insane ignorance. I work in NYC and most of my life I
have lived in or very near NYC. Other than living in Costa Rica
briefly, AP is the farthest I have ever lived from NYC. The point-
some of you in this area are making me very eager to move back!

It is very sad that the day after such a historic day, some of you
have to post reminders that racism is still alive and well.

Last night we made history and with that said I could not let this
moment pass without putting some thoughts on paper to share will
all
of you. I must admit that I was not a firm supporter of president
elect Barack Obama in the beginning. His eloquence seemed a bit
contrived and his perceived lack of experience and quick rise to
power worried me. This along with years of my own insecurities
clouded my judgment based on a fear of what could be and past
experiences in my own life. However, my conscious would not allow
me to forego my deep rooted principals and as I learned more about
Barack I could see how important this election is for us as
 Americans.

Barracks win ushered a new era which will set the bar even higher,
not only for Barack, but also for each and every one of us. Make
no
mistake that many challenges still lay ahead and that the issues
that we face today will probably take as many years to overcome as
it took for them to materialize. However, let us not be so quick
to
blame the other party for our shortcomings. We all must accept
blame and responsibility for where we are today and for not doing
our part in ensuring those we elected to office followed our
charge
and mandate. We have just as much at stake as Barack does in the
next four years. We all need to do our part to ensure that future
generations do not have to go through the crisis that has
enveloped
us today and that we continue to remain vigilant and educated on
the
issues we face. Speak up often and let your voice be heard!

I put AMERICANS in caps for a reason. In order to succeed we need
to shed our prejudices and treat each other with more respect. We
need to stop self segregating and no longer view ourselves as
African American, Hispanic American, Italian American, and so on,
but rather as what we truly are one united body, one voice, one
people, all AMERICAN, pure and simple.

We have a responsibility to our family, community, and country. We
need to take responsibility for our own actions and understand
that
life is fraught with obstacles and that it is up to us to
perceiver. That no one is going to give you a handout, but rather
a
helping hand. That we need to work hard and instill those same
principles and morals in our children so that they can grow up and
make this a better world. That we need to do our part to conserve
our resources and make due with less and that WE the people are
still the ones that have control. That this is a government of the
people by the people for the people, and that no politician has
the
right to make that decision for you.

We still have many other hurdles ahead of us from global warming,
to
basic human rights, gay rights, equal pay, and the list goes on.
So
stand tall, stand proud, but most importantly respect one another!

The Vote Grab: Voting Machines Are Unreliable and Inaccurate

 by Peter Tatchell

As early voting in the US presidential elections gets underway,
ESS
iVotronics touch-screen electronic voting machines have been
observed
in four separate states [1] flipping the votes - mostly from Barack
Obama to John McCain but sometimes to third party candidates too.
This
has already occurred during early voting in the states of West
 Virginia, Tennessee, Missouri and Texas.

A county clerk in West Virginia invited a video crew to watch his
demonstration of the reliability of the disputed voting machines
but
instead he saw the machine flipping the votes, as critics claimed.
He
put this down to the faulty calibration of the voting machine.
However, even after he recalibrated the machine it continued to
flip
 votes. Watch the video here:

This is further evidence that the electronic voting machines that
will
be used in the 4 November election are not reliable and accurate -
that they are prone to malfunction and may not record the actual
vote
 winner.

Democrats are not the only people who are worried. Stephen
Spoonamore,
a Republican security expert, explains why electronic voting is
inherently unsafe in an eight part series of interviews. You can
watch
Part 1, and access Parts 2 to 7, here [2].

Writing in the New Statesman way back in 2004, reflecting on
criticisms of the electronic voting systems used in the
presidential
election that year, Michael Meacher MP pointed out that
statisticians,
academics and political analysts had highlighted significant voting
differences [3] between electoral districts that used paper ballots
and those that used electronic systems. These cannot be explained
by
random variation. The investigators found a much larger variance
than
expected and in every case it favoured George W Bush over John
Kerry.
In Wisconsin and Ohio, the discrepancy favoured Bush by 4 per
cent, in
Pennsylvania by 5 per cent, in Florida and Minnesota by 7 per
cent, in
North Carolina by 9 per cent and in New Hampshire by a whopping 15
per
 cent.

Research by the University of Berkeley, California, revealed
election
irregularities in 2004 in Florida. These irregularities, all of
which
were associated with electronic voting machines, appear to have
awarded between 130,000 to 260,000 additional votes to Bush.

The discrepancies between paper and electronic voting could be the
result of simple technological glitches. But some experts detect
something more sinister: outright vote fixing by interference with
 voting machine and tabulation software.

Meacher [3] reported that Diebold company voting machines and
optical
scanners may not be tamper-proof from hacking, particularly via
remote
modems. Diebold machines were used in counting a substantial
proportion of the 2004 votes and will be used again in next week's
 presidential poll.

Two US computer security experts, in their book Black Box Voting
[4],
state that by entering a two-digit code in a hidden location, a
second set of votes is created; and this set of votes can be
changed
in a matter of seconds, so that it no longer matches the correct
votes.

This is entirely possible, according to Clinton Curtis, a Florida
computer programmer. He has confirmed that in 2000 he designed an
undetectable programme for Republican congressman Tom Feeney. It
was
created to rig elections by covertly switching votes from one

ACORN workers.. But the evidence that has surfaced so far shows
they faked forms to get paid for work they didn't do, not to stuff
ballot boxes

But so far ACORN itself has not been officially charged with any
fraud. Aside from the heated charges and counter-charges, no
evidence has yet surfaced to show that the ACORN employees who
submitted fraudulent registration forms intended to pave the way for
illegal voting. Rather, they were trying to get paid by ACORN for
doing no work.

ACORN also says it cannot simply discard suspicious forms on its
own, but is required by law in most states to submit to local
election officials all the forms its canvassers bring in. ACORN's
Whelan told us that its own legal counsel strongly advises that the
group do the same in states that don't explicitly require it,
because only election officials are legally able to determine the
validity of a voter registration application.

Oh and Neither ACORN's Chicago office nor CSI has been accused of
voter registration irregularities.

Now you are going to twist my words around? I did read the whole
article- I was referring to your selective reading. Honestly Tommy,
this is where you always make yourself look bad and why the rest of
us should never even respond to you.
