Jack, I agree! So why aren't well-heeled Thieves like Madoff, not being prosecuted? While this country has taken a giant step in electing Obama, an everyman from the generation, I thought, years ago would lead us into seeing the worth of everyone. A young man from your generation, with fresh ideas that seem honest on its' face. Look at the treatment he's (Madoff), getting for defrauding millions from honest, hard-working Americans and using them in the biggest Ponzi scheme perpetrated so far. As far as some party going posters here, I don't think Obama would waste $20 bucks on a drink! Neither would I. Matter of fact, I told a very dear friend, that I would concoct my OWN Cosmos myself, at home! I don't consider myself cheap, by the fact I own bottles of scotch worth over $200.US and wines worth over $50. right here! I find those prices excessive and I guess though it's whatever the market will bear, so for those who think it's a bargain, go for it! I have to smack my own wrist for paying $20 bucks for an absinthe, so touche! On a PS, my Bush clock ran out to 00:00 at 12:01 AM, 1/20/08. Our long nightmare is OVER! [AsburyPark] Re: Save GRock
Station 101.5 is NJ101.5, the New Jersey Station. 105.3 is classified as urban/Black radio. The term Black was coined in 1964, when James Brown had a hit called Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud. Saying that one is Black is a self defining word in the Black Community. Even though most of us self define ourselves as African-Americans, the term Black simplifies who we are. Because of slavery, most of us don't know which tribe in Africa we came from. Better yet, study Black History and the bizarre system that separated families or better yet, read up on The Katrina Effect, how Blacks were given one-way tickets out of town, separating children and pets. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, oakdorf oakd...@... wrote: --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, fancypaaantz fancypaaantz@ wrote: http://www.petitiononline.com/grock/petition.html Interesting you bring up the radio. He went to say that Philly has only a 48% graduation rate among black males, newark 50%. While he continued talking, he didn't change HIS rap - ain't - I don't know how many times, he do that - just continued the slang talk while talking about Obama will change and be a leader for young black people. Why not start by changing the talk radio lingo? Another question I've been asking about - Is it me, or has the world changed from african-american to black as referring to obama and the general population. Seems that has been the case the past two weeks. Let the educators take over from here. Yahoo! [AsburyPark] Jack-Memories
I Tried unsuccessfully to reply to your last post, so here goes. Maybe because your memory reflects my own memories of what Asbury Park WAS, through the eyes of a (then) child, I can relate to your early club days, the music, just about everything, because my kids reflect the exact same things! This being the weekend of change, I can't, not even once, remember anything or anyone harboring or showing me any racial animosity, in AP. I never heard from my kids that they were treated unfairly. I heard after the fact, when I took my kids, sister and niece who were visiting us in the late 70's, that Asbury Park's Beach was racially segregated. In that regard, I'm glad I didn't know this, although I don't dispute what others have said in that regard. I have color photos of my kids on the jetty and when I show them, others ask, where is this? When I say Asbury Park, they look stunned! I say, must have been my winning smile! Let's face it, after 5 kids, I was just beginning to HAVE a body! Remember, I was a very LATE bloomer! I have been known, more than once, to sing Born in the USA, out loud to my kids astonished looks that I actually KNOW the words! When I began to repeat rap lyrics, they would feel my forehead! I'm talking about Grand Master Flash, not the kind of rap where the B word is used or other profanities. I even like Country Music and Country Comedy or Red Neck Humor! Jack and others born in the 60's, you're entitled to your memories just as I loved the days of Howdy Doody, Lucy and the first series of the Mickey Mouse Club and American Bandstand! Me? I was Gene Autry, the singing cowboy, complete with black outfit, red leather boots and 2 shiny, silver cap pistols! I lived in a fantasy world! Sometimes I still do, but it's OK, because back when I was young, I could always go there. I just did. God Bless! Yahoo! Know what? I'mm old enough to be both of your mothers, but I have the same attitude as YOU do! Nostalgia my you know what! Those were YOUR times, YOUR memories and I don't see a damn thing wrong with that! I can see it through your eyes, as I have kids your age, the whole WNEW thing, which coming out of the 60's, I would write the notes to Neptune High School allowing my kids to skip to be released for a once in a lifetime day! I received a phone call at my job, because the principal didn't believe I wrote it, (the note)! Yes, I was a regular drill sargeant at home, because with 5 kids, I didn't see why they couldn't keep order at home! My idea of a good time, was to pack the car and go up to Yankee Stadium to see a game or in the summer go to the Meadowlands for a Budweiser Beer Fest! I'm sure my kids thought I was a pain in the ass, more than once! I call it discipline! You only get one childhood, so why can't it be happy? Anyway, my kids still recall many of the group things we did together, especially since they didn't have to pay for anything! I've gotten early tans, because one of them was playing Babe Ruth Ball or driving to Delaware to see my youngest son run in college. Oak and Jack, I'm feeling BOTH of you and I'm on the same page as you! So what! Someone in this group always sees what others do or feel as insignificant because THEY can't relate, but trust me, I do and I'm glad you remember when the drinking age dropped to 18. Both of my sons could then meet up with us and have a drink on who? Us! Of course! Keep your memories close! Some of us can't relate, but damn it I do! I still party, have a good time and get my drunk on sometimes! At least I tell the truth! I never had the guts to go into the Haunted Mansion, but my scary girls went and came out all shook up! I laughed until I cried when I was told the rats ran across one daughters feet and she jumped on her brothers back for the rest of the ride! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer hing...@... wrote: I'd love to see some photos of the Clover Club. [AsburyPark] Re: Why was a dumpster buried at the Met hotel site?
It happens because of politics, the publics perception of Asbury, that it's somehow okay to dump on us! Don't want to call any names but certain contractors get ALL of the demolition work around here, something I've noticed over the decades! Probably no-bid contracts. I heard testimony at a few zoning board meetings about illegal dumping where the riots took place on many of those vacant lots. Tales of stoves, refrigerators, etc. dumped, then filled in to make the lots look level! No names were provided as to who did the dumping, but I think the posters here, know exactly who it is! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer hing...@... wrote: Is there any possibility that burying a dumpster at the site was somehow approved? That red dumpster has annoyed me too and I don't even live in the city. Thinking back to my frustration, I believe that I had wondered how and why someone would allow a dumpster to sit there for so long. Dumpsters are rented and the longer that they sit there, the more they cost. I recall wondering why Christiello - or whomever was paying for that big red eyesore had not had it removed. I don't know who's dumpster it is/was, but it was clearly not a DeLisa dumpster. Knowing (and assuming) that Christiello is from Morristown, the Carter might not have been local. So, let's suppose that the business of being Mayor of Morristown distracts a person enough to have forgotten that there was a red dumpster working up a large rental bill in Asbury Park. The bill goes to collections and a phone call is placed. The Billee calls one of thier friends and ask then to make the dumpster disappear so that the billee can report to the Carter that they have no idea where it went, Gee, I thought you took it away. Dumpster gets buried, proof is on the Carter, billee is laughing privately. Hinge's friend foil the plot. I looked through that dumpster. I am sure that there *could* be toxins in there, but it appeared to be just junk. It will be interesting to see how this all plays out. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Jack Pitzer hinge98@ wrote: This morning, I was told by 2 reliable friends that the dumpster that was sitting in front of the Met hotel was recently buried on the site. Oak, That's why I have a problem wth the phrase single Mom! For a stick-in-the-mud-old married lady, single Mom meant an unwed Mother! Today, it's any woman raising kids alone. I prefer divorcee, a once married woman and widower, meaning the man/woman is dead! Single Mom, conjures up a lot of negative pictures for me. Whatever! Not familiar with your acronyms either. Don't know what BK means since I'm not in the real estate business. All I know how to do is read and negotiate contracts and manage projects, thus project management! As far as Sears, I guess I was just lucky. When I left New Orleans, my washer and dryer, both Sears, lasted 20 years! I gave them to my Mom, who had just bought her first home, when she and my dad divorced and my youngest sister was in her last year of undergrad in college. It's a broken system, across all races and classes. Men make bad choices as well. Some especially in how they write ): It's just that some people don't realize or don't care about having a responsbility to renting OR owning. The new Landlord Tenant judge is african-american. That's where a town, and those with vouchers etc, also have the state inspectors on their side to pressure the landlords. The landlord has to pay their bills as well. Taxes mortgage Maitenance Insurance etc. Again, the judge made a statement before she starts explaining it simply. Some landlords are there for a couple hundred $. Others more. Some even less. The system isn't perfect - far from perfect. And there has been plenty of money not just at fed bailouts to corps, but plenty ver the years to numerous programs. What's that $85millon year to just ap schools - not a bailout to property owners in AP? It has to be done and I don't how it can be done fairly. Life is not fair I was always told - so work hard. People that abuse the system make it worse for those truly in need. If you have a rent subsidized house in NYC and you sublet it and pocket the change - fair or not? IF you rent out a room in a home you get a voucher for and don't report it - fair or unfair? If you don't pay your rent, tell your landlord (or bank if you own) go ahead and evict me and proceed to party in front of that new tv - fair or unfair? You worked hard and did it right - so is it fair or unfair? Or is it the system. Did you listen to Obama the other day? Just going to interject my 2 cents. As a longtime married, being Gay is not the same as being mental! I don't see being Gay as a condition for one and for another, I don't see it as treatable. It is what it is! I have a tough time as it is being straight! I've been through therapy but not for my sexuality. I have problems dealing with MY reality, much less someone's elses drives, sexual or not. Since I don't understand for lack of a better word, what it is to be attracted to the same sex, I don't judge someone as being sick or mental, if they are or gravitate to a person of the same sex. Trying to diagnose someone, is like someone pretending to be a lawyer without a license! Since I am not Gay, I don't try to figure it out no more than the pigmentation of my skin, makes me Black. Great info! Wasn't online for 2 days, but watched an expose' that dealt with homeowners and renters being evicted from homes! (News 12 NJ). Very sad, in the case of renters who are paid up only to be given eviction notices because the owner defaulted. It's against the law to evict a renter, simply because the owner defaulted. Didn't know that and renters should attend whatever workshops available. When school closed for the holidays, a disabled woman, renting told me a story about her landlord not providing heat. This was when the temp was down to 14-19 degrees. I advised her to call Fair Housing in Freehold and to file a complaint with the Asbury Park Police, for the record. Also Code enforcement in City Hall should have been notified. It's criminal to deprive someone of heat and/or hot water! The lady didn't seem to know what her options were. She is on Section 8 and I informed her that Uncle Sam had already paid her rent, so under the law, she should complain to them, also. Soft content? Some of it is downright insulting, IMHO! They are even caustic, if they consider you, the enemy! I've seen TCN go after some individuals, like a vendetta! I have to agree with the ad content. I remember when the Coaster was free, then was a quarter and I forget what it costs now. I find the Coaster to be an alternative newspaper to the Press and the TCN, which when it began was REALLY good, especially during political campaigns, to being a gotcha critic and sometime feisty, like I said to its' perceived enemies. If they don't like you, they go after you with a vengeance! Not the 1st alternative that used expletives either! [AsburyPark] Re: AC - Asbury Park Parallels
Nice thought, but the thing about living here, is WE have to worry, since a 13M deficit, will result in loss of some services. I just hate it, when someone posts that we shouldn't worry about how Asbury Park looks, just fiddle while Rome burns, huh? If you don't live here, please keep your cheeky little criticism to yourself! If you want to visit, just visit and don't come down or up here, with a pen and pad, to note what you don't like about this town. It's bad enough, when we ourselves KNOW what SHOULD have been done, was illegal to have been done, taking liberties with property you DON'T own, just because you developed a portion of the City. Nobody elected YOU, Mr. Developer, so please heed the laws like everybody else! Some of us DO frequent the restaurants, shops and what have you, but there are those who just can't afford the high priced drinks and what passes for food! I'm not one of them, but I sometimes feel like I'm being fleeced at the door, so I go elsewhere! A woman's perogative. Some of you snotty nosed, corporate types, won't be able to afford it either when you retire! No, I don't go to those early bird senior places, yet! I found myself in a modest priced restaurant one day and the waitress asked , do you want the senior special? I looked puzzled at my spouse, wondering what the waitress was talking about, then she realized, I didn't either and explained that on Wednesday, Seniors get a discount! Yep, it was Wednesday and I didn't know these deals existed! I began paying attention in restaurants since my hair IS gray! I hadn't really thought of myself as a Senior until that moment. Oh well! Anyway, Asbury Park USED to be affordable to any income. It no longer is, so for those of us who have 10 plus years invested in calling this place, home, I hope you see the point I'm making. If AP keeps pricing out long-timers, the economy will force many of us to leave and then you bottomless pits of money can have the place, to yourself! [AsburyPark] Re: Star Ledger: Asbury Park revival project still far from finished
Who says we're asleep? 1st go 'round with redevelopment back in the mid 80's went nowhere, with Carabetta declaring bankruptcy, tying the City up with an entanglement that only Judge Mollen of the Mollen Commission could UN-tangle by the late 90's! The power machine that ran Asbury Park into the ground, was still at work, until a grassroots group called Asbury United stepped up to the plate, electing its' 2nd Black Mayor. The losing ticket not satisfied with what happened, compiled a report from the Homeowners' group, gave it to the FBI, resulting in the ousting of the Mayor and eventually all of the council members that were elected in 1996, through corruption, including Terry Weldon, the City Manager/Mayor of Ocean Twp. He was awarded a pension for being arrested! Go figure! In came 5 who cared or not, contracting with Asbury Partners, who sub contracted with Madison Marquette, who has been the mover and shaker, who has done anything so far, but not living up to the original agreement or resulting in anything to the City for what it gave up! Now, you have MM interpreting what they can/can't do, altering the landscape, in their favor, irregardless what the City thought was going to be a feasible plan agreeable, to the City finally having some tax ratables on the books, but with so much unfinished and haphazardly construction unfinished, the old C-8 became the Esperanza or C-8-II! Still with me?I'm not an architect, politician, real estate mogul or any of the people, that move and shake Asbury! Just a resident, citizen and taxpayer! I just have an opinion! Opinions are like A$$-holes! Everybody has one! Since you were honest enough to voice your displeasure as to why AP hasn't moved forward, I just gave my opinion, unvarnished as it is. I also think MM has tried to make an honest attempt to do something! Remember, I moved to NJ 2 months after the 1970 riot. It was not pretty, but the West Side where most of the destruction took place wasn't and still isn't what it should be. Kinda like New Orleans after Katrina, only AP has been wallowing in this shame, almost 40 years! Those residents who were here, before, during and after me, really know the score. Asbury Park is still one of the most beautiful and historical areas, I've ever seen and I've seen many, so this is just my 2 cents. A harbinger of the national real estate disaster that was to come, the Esperanza should have been near completion today, but instead the same three stories stand bleakly against the backdrop of a beachfront awaiting tourists. The poured-concrete foundation hasn't changed since Hoboken-based Metro Homes gave the stop-work order a year ago Sunday, but the company's president insists he is pressing on with plans for a scaled- down version of the high rise. He said work could resume by next summer. Our project is far from dead, said Metro Homes president Dean Geibel. We're basically creating a whole new building. Held hostage for two decades by ups and downs of the housing market, the city is trying to buck current economic trends and continues to rebuild around the building that takes its name from the Spanish word for hope. Surprisingly enough, we're still bringing business into Asbury Park, said Tom Gilmour, director of commerce for the city. A lot of people who wanted to come here got turned off by the high prices and are back. Gilmour said Asbury Park has had 17 new storefronts, including seven new restaurants, open on the boardwalk since May. Another seven businesses opened downtown during that same time. A year ago, retail space in the city's downtown was slightly less than half full. Now it's about 60 percent occupied, he estimated. Last year, the boardwalk had a nearly 70 percent vacancy rate. Now it's maxed out, Gilmour said.

We'll tolerate most barbs, but don't you dare demean Bruce Springsteen, because The Boss is ours. He's stitched himself into the fabric of New Jersey, and by this point he's as culturally ingrained as diners, Tony Soprano and the neon lights on the boardwalk's tilt-a-whirls down the shore. It doesn't matter that Springsteen became rock and roll's future by yearning to leave New Jersey and find himself on the open road, to quit the boardwalk scene and pull out of a town full of losers, because even though he left... well, he never really did. He still plays rollicking shows in Giants Stadium on every tour and, with the E Street Band, awes crowds with rumbling sets that include the same hits from those iconic 1970s albums. The state's true poet laureate is now a revered social critic, and his music reflects his age and political activism-and from a selfish standpoint, it's simply not as fun to blast the new stuff and sing along even though you can't hear your own voice, because it's not that type of music anymore. There are no more Thunder Roads for Springsteen to find, only 41 shots for him to riff on. Except, that is, for about one month every year, when radio stations hide Born in the U.S.A. or The Rising and pull out a dusty track that hasn't been played in 11 months. Roy Bittan starts by tickling the piano to conjure bells, and the crowd roars in hysterical approval. Clarence Clemons does his best impersonation of Santa Claus and then, beautifully, Springsteen comes in with the simple words we've all memorized on the notes we all know are coming, yet somehow feel fresh every year: You better watch out/You better not cry/Better not pout/I'm telling you why. Then it's the crowd's turn, a reincarnation of the call-and-response Springsteen uses in all of his live shows now. It doesn't matter if you're in the car alone or if you're surrounded by thousands at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park; you yell, Santa Claus is coming to town! as loud, as hoarsely and with as much holiday fervor as you can. Max Weinberg ratchets up the percussion, Miami Steve croons in the background, Clarence solos on the sax-it's familiar, but invigorating. It's the best Christmas song of all time, because it captures the spirit of the holiday season. Find the bells and let loose. Embrace the company of others. And for goodness sake, fuhgeddabout the Jersey sneer, and be thankful the state is, indeed, not a glorified parking lot. We have, after all, given even the naughtiest of you the gift of Springsteen. = Happy Thankshallowistmas **Make your life easier with all your friends, email, and favorite sites in one place. I think Werner is the perfect source. Unless I read it in the newspaper or see it here, I had generally lost interest until this past Spring and summer and to my surprise, I saw spruced up improvements, over all, which is not to say, improvements haven't been made. I didn't take into account infrastructure improvements like plumbing, retooling, refitting, etc. The new shops are okay, but this is not the East Village, although, it reminds me of it. Cookman Ave. is where I've seen the MOST improvements. The small businesses and restaurants are the draw for me. I'm past the age of wanting to blow glass, buy overpriced tees and designer clothes that are just labels, but for the young, Label wearing is still THE thing! Yep! Now THAT, was an AWESOME post! In a nutshell, you've put a positive spin, on the reality that is Asbury Park! The Pop Warner Pee-Wee's won their championship game and are on their way to Florida! Asbury Park's Varsity Football's unbeaten record is no more! They lost to Neptune, 6-0 Thanksgiving day! So Neptune now owns the bragging rights, for a year! My Grandson is a senior at Neptune High School and it was his last game! What an ending! My adult children, all graduates of Neptune said it looked like 10,000 people were there! I didn't attend the game this year, as I got a late start, making pies for friends, for 2 days! It smells like cinnamon heaven, in here! Anyway, I am a great admirer of Werner and you, Glenn! I live here, but you are half of the reason, I indulge in visiting the boardwalk! Being a consummate shore bird, after Labor Day, I would assume that the sidewalks would roll up, like they do in neighboring Ocean Grove, Avon, Bradley Beach and Belmar. That's what happens there, but MM has expanded Asbury Park into a year round venue. I would think you have to dress like you're in Alaska to take in the boardwalk, this time of the year. It's been brutally cold, for the last 2 weeks and it rained all day today and snowed in Sussex County, (in the mountains). I mean, here, those with pets walk their dogs, ride bikes and the morning walkers are usually down there. Me? I am deep into Christmas decorating and O-D-ing on turkey leftovers! It's time for egg-nog, hot chocolate and Southern Comfort! I've decorated 2 trees, put out my miniature village, complete with people and a Jazz Band! I passed Mario's house and it looks like a post card, it's so pretty and festive! I wanted to sing Silver Bells and We Need a Little Christmas, Right this Very Minute, I felt so heartened! No, you youngsters can go down to Convention Hall! I'm keeping my old ass home! If you young people can brave the cold, I say come on down! It's beautiful in Asbury Park at Christmas time. You can see stately, tasteful decorations and you can see some very busy, obnoxious ones, too! It gives me a good laugh, but you have to give it to the people who decorate like there's no tomorrow! Here is my story: I visited AP for the first time in 1999. I was encouraged to visit Paradise in Asbury Park. I had never heard of Asbury Park, NJ. I had three friends with me and I followed the directions precisely (no GPS's back then.) My friends were very vocal as we drove east on Asbury Avenue: What is this, Bosnia?; There are better places in Sarajevo. I parked the car and we all stared at Paradise. It was an Oasis in a sea of crap. That was 1999. I stepped out of my car onto a TILED parking lot knowing NOTHING about A.P., I did not realize that I was standing on the former floor tile of the Plaza Hotel. I actually thought that the parking lot had been tiled. THEN, I saw The Palace. It scared the crap out of me in the dark! Yes, Paradise was terrific, but I could not get the rest of A.P. out of my mind. I have spent the last 8 years learning as much as I can about the former Jewel of the Jersey Shore. I agree with you, there have been many un-truths in advertising. Hell, if Kellogg's changes the picture on the box of Cornflakes, they can legally call the product New and Improved! Sure, dates have been missed, there are always obstacles to overcome and it all takes time. I am hoping that you realize that when you are critical of Asbury Park - specifically in this Yahoo Group that you are not being critical of the Development Team or the City - you are being critical of the residents and the fans of Asbury Park. The majority of the residents of Asbury Park, until very recently, lived in a city which was spiraling into decline. When you post here and challenge the milestones (I agree that they are late in coming), you are in a way degrading the hope of a LOT of very hopeful people. Yes, Germany was first and Queen Victoria introduced it to the Brits through her German husband Prince Albert, later introduced into the United States, during the Victorian period. However the customs of Christmas evolved, the overcommercialization of one of the Churches most sacred days cannot be overemphasized. For me, Good Friday, is the most sacred of all Holy Days. For God so gave the world, His only begotten Son. Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Sunday, ring true for me, followed by Pentecost. They are Christmas trees. Truth in advertising. There has historically been opposition to the custom of the Christmas tree because of its alleged pagan origins. Thus, Oliver Cromwell preached against the heathen traditions of Christmas carols and decorated trees. As pastor Henry Schwan of Cleveland OH in 1851 decorating what was likely the first Christmas tree in an American church. His parishioners condemned the idea as a Pagan practice. There are various legends regarding the origin of the Christmas tree, often relating to Saint Boniface. Thus, in one version, Boniface disrupted a pagan child sacrifice at an oak tree, flattening the oak with a blow of his fist. A small fir sprang up in place of the oak, which Boniface told the pagans represented Christ.[1] In some accounts, Martin Luther is credited with adding lights and decoration to fir branches traditionally hung from ceilings.[2] Condemnation of the Christmas tree as pagan has been based on a passage in Jeremiah, Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. (Jeremiah 10:2-4, KJV). Christmas traditions in general have often been associated with paganism in 19th century scholarship. Robert Chambers in his 1832 Book of Days notes that the festivities of Christmas originally derived from the Roman Saturnalia , had afterwards been intermingled with the ceremonies observed by the British Druids at the period of winter-solstice, and at a subsequent period became incorporated with the grim mythology of the ancient Saxons. Two popular observances belonging to Christmas are more especially derived from the worship of our pagan ancestorsthe hanging up of the mistletoe and the burning of the Yule log. Regarding the Christmas tree itself, Chambers notes that it seems to be a very ancient custom in Germany, and is probably a remnant of the splendid and fanciful pageants of the middle ages. Other traditions relating to Christmas that may derive from Germanic pagan practices include the Christmas ham, Yule Goat, stuffing stockings, elements of Santa Claus and his nocturnal ride through the sky, and elements of Alpine folklore.[3] There are also some accounts that place the earliest Christmas trees in the Baltic (variously Estonia or Lativa), while in actuality the custom was introduced there in the 1920s. [AsburyPark] Re: Stone Pony Closing for Repairs....
Glenn, In defense of Werner, you said a LOT in just a few paragraphs! Funny, Jesus was a victim of His own people, too! This forum, although mainly about Asbury Park, the City's Redevelopment, the starts, stops, C8, one and two, the parking meter fiasco, the Wonder Bar, a successful undertaking, which opened, closed and reopened and on and on. Werner, a gifted and talented individual, with a lot to offer in historical value, gets short shrifted, for a variety of reasons, mainly by 3 people in this group, who never post unless they want to put in a dig or criticism, which NOBODY of conscience, cares for and only divert attention away from REAL issues. By and large, a private individual, super intelligent and knowlegable about the historical aspects of this small city, that a lot of people want to lay claim to. Then there are others, including myself, who get jumped on, if we don't agree or have a different point of view, which in America is allowed by law to agree or disagree, but in this group, it can be almost fatal! The powers that be, will have you harrassed, arrested and jailed, if you don't dance to their particular tune, which now that Obama has been elected, true justice may prevail and the gestapo tactics of officials run amok, will end! There ARE people who agree with everything Werner states! I'm one of them! He is right on point, when he explains WHY the lights for example, are deficient. He explains WHY, the Palace SHOULDN'T have been demolished, JR! It was a LANDMARK! It spoke of what Asbury Park IS/WAS and COULD have been! We WERE a resort, dotted with small and large hotels/motels/inns, etc. A Coney Island, South! When I read posters speaking of frozen custard, hot dogs and lemonade, I think of what I found when I moved here, even after the riots! If the boardwalk had been demolished, I NEVER would have known! As a Catholic, I could never have Madam Marie read my palm, but I wanted her to; just for fun. My kids played miniature golf many times, before it was closed, went to the movies at the Baronet, bowled at Asbury Lanes. Kid stuff! There are some mean spirited people who post in this group, who really need a life anytime they take an innocent like Werner to pick on! Let us recall that those attacks have cost Werner money and esteem. I ask all of you to put yourselves in Werner's shoes and think again. How many of us have actually been forced into a corner without a resource but are still willing to share our knowledge. Not me, well, maybe, I have learned from a great teacher. With a few exceptions that I am aware of, many of Werner's critics on this forum have never met Werner. I have. Werner could win the majority of debates and if he lost, would conceded with grandeur. My best advice to all of you is that if you choose to attack, make certain that your know your opponent well. That man in the scary house might actualy be the guy watching your back! As we watch the economy bundgy jumping, we must realize that any one of us may face the budget that Werner deals with daily. [AsburyPark] Re: NYT
Sure does! Hope that springs, that is! That whole recent episode on Mary Magdalene, continues to make me question, just what is Catholicism and why the hell am I so confused? My faith is one that I never questioned until REAL life set in. Here, in Asbury Park, there were no less than four Catholic Churches, all within walking distance. I moved to Neptune from So. Belmar, where I was a member of St. Rose's Parish. The other other Catholic Church's were those I read about in the newspaper, the Press, which was in Asbury at the time. I first banked at the old Belmar-Wall Bank, on 19th Ave., which was convenient, but to give myself an excuse to come into Asbury Park, I switched to First Merchants in Press Plaza, next to the Press! I lunched at the little Press Box restaurant, so tiny, you needed a crowbar to extract yourself from the 2 booths in there. I was 6 months pregnant and as big as a house! Asbury Park was cleaning up after the riot that had devastated the place. I imagined Asbury Park to be much bigger than it actually was and natives took me around to show me places that used to be the in places to be, at the time. The cleanup is reminiscent of how long it's taking since Katrina. S-l-ooo-w! 30 plus years and counting! Redevelopment has been one huge mess, mismanaged by every administration, since I arrived here, now some 38 years! How's that? I've learned that when money and politics are involved, you'll get a literal tug of war, with everybody taking credit for the pluses and none for the minuses. I was in my late 20's and now I'm in my 60's! A lifetime! I should be pessimistic, but hope springs eternal! Naive? You bet, but I see this generation acting much faster than mine! I hated politics and politicians, because they gum up everything! I've watched over the years, how politics work and it isn't pretty. [AsburyPark] Re: Parking: Pro and Con ( some Nostalgia)
Mario, If memory serves me right, the only free parking, was at the mauls, as you call them. I've always hated the malls, over downtown, any day. For years, I shopped in Deal, because Pix Shoes, formerly of Main st., here had a store over there and a boutique called the French Connection next door where I bought chic blazers, sweaters and trousers, when I was in my corporate phase of my life. I also shopped in Spring Lake, because they had a discount shoe store there! By now, you should guess I had a foot fetish! I did schlepp up to Woodbridge Center, with the kids to shop at Ohrbach's and Stern's, because THEY were in that I don't want to look like everybody else phase! I hate those kids now, (laughing)! All the hoops they had me jumping through and developing a giant ulcer doing it! The Varsity Jackets, (4), I bought for them, majorette boots for my daughter who was in the band front, from Kislin's in Red Bank and all of the Pop Warner gear I HAD to pay for, Track and Turf shoes from Bob Kislin's in Ocean Twp. I'm shit poor, because of it, but as I've said before, I raised 5 good kids. I spent money like water, back then, but we were in Church every Sunday and Midnight Mass, every Christmas and Easter. Now, I'm a CME Catholic, Christmas, Mother's Day and Easter! I was a big fan of Bamberger's too! Where I got the patience of being a Mother, I'll never know and the pets, the kids just had to have, became MY pets to water, feed and medicate! The Press did a piece on Bobby Braun, former basketball player from 1981. I was at that game in Princeton, with my 5 kids, husband and kids we had with us from Asbury Park, like I had nothing to do! My Darren was a Senior, Glenn was at Stockton and we had advanced tickets. People still talk about those days 27 years ago, about a team that was supposed to lose, won 85-65! You had to be there! --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: For me, the most persuasive comments about parking (on both sides of the issue) are below, following my opining. I grew up hearing over and over again that a major reason for the demise of small town shopping centers was the free and ample parking available at the then-new outdoor malls. I think that received wisdom is now called a meme. And then came the even newer enclosed malls, now referred to by some as Mauls and air-conditioned hell. Nostalgia: Fond memories of being taken by the hand as a kid, especially at Christmas time, to Bloomfield Center, downtown Nutley and Belleville; and Newark where Bamberger's Thanksgiving/Christmas Parade was predominantly Bam's employees before it was gobbled up by Macy's Inc. No promotions for movies, schlock TV, twink idols, or kitschy Disney. Red and Green lighted decorations were draped across our main streets with abandon, and no one worried that some drivers might confuse them with the traffic lights. Sigh. When all that disappeared in NJ, my preference was NYC where you could still brave the elements and experience what remained of the Grand Old Department Stores like B. Altman's where long-time clerks knew their merchandise. (City sidewalks, busy sidewalks, In the air there's a feeling of Christmas, And on every street corner you hear Silver bells, silver bells As the shoppers rush home with their treasures, Hear the snow crunch) But I digress. That was Then, This is Now. So, I'm still weighing the strong points below. As a footnote, I still remember admiring the ad hoc entrepreneurship by Oceanport's property owners near Monmouth Race Track. You could park on their lawns, even flower beds, for a few bucks more or less, depending on how close they were to the main gate. I started to calculate how many cars would fit on my property on my Street of Dreams in Asbury Park. In a message dated 11/17/2008 12:10:28 P.M. Maybe Asbury would be better off advertising a bailout backlash or a bailout for people. No beach fees. No parking fees. Half the sales tax (UEZ). No hotel room tax. No tourist taxes whatsoever. Free outdoor concerts. Free entertainment in the green spaces (like Werner once pointed out - jugglers, acrobats, mimes, strongest man in the world types [note: saw a guy in AP with that show when I was a kid], etc.) Asbury Park - where you spend your money on yourself. When you were growing up, it was a very nice neighborhood. We spent our 10th Wedding Anniversary at Freddies and Fredas, was right around the corner! Well, the building is still there. Freda's became Mishepo's and it's a restaurant, now or was. You could walk to Mt. Carmel! I attended a wedding this past Saturday down in Camden County, at All Saints Church. There's nothing like a Catholic wedding with the Mass. The bridesmaids wore chocolate taffeta dresses, (strapless), with Fall Bouquets. The reception was at Luciens Manor in Berlin, NJ. Beautiful fresh seafood, oysters and clams on the half shell, jumbo shrimp, hot and cold buffet, open bar throughout, sit down dinner, filet mignon and boneless fish. [AsburyPark] Re: Testing Him Already
They're a hell of a lot better, than the mean-spirited, all for self rich men we had! As far as Colin Powell, he doesn't represent me, racially or otherwise, as our ideologies are exactly opposite, but since Obama WON, everyone wants to claim a piece of him. He claims African-American because it's PC, but his background is West Indian. He's a butt-kisser, than got a rude awakening! A backhand slap from the very people he paid homage to. Now, he, Jesse Jackson, Rev. Al and Farrakhan, ALL want a piece of this quiet, studious and thoughtful husband, father and believer in Democracy for all, not just for some. He even believes in people like you! So much for that! Keep baiting; that's all you're good for! Now, go crawl back in the snake pit you came from! Sorry, I went off Asbury Park. --- In AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com, Mike Hemeon [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Keep the racial thing going Sharon. Start calling people Oreos now. When are you going to come out and just say you hate this country for holding you down? You can't shine their shoes and they aren't good enough for you especially Colin Powell. Where is he in Obama's team? I don't see any change just members of Jimmy Carter and Clinton's re-tread team. More of the same nothing changed here! --- On Fri, 11/7/08, sharon_b283 [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: From: sharon_b283 [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [AsburyPark] Re: Testing Him Already To: AsburyPark@yahoogroups.com Date: Friday, November 7, 2008, 8:19 AM I'm confident that this and other challenges dumped in his lap, by the rogues in the White House for the last 8 years, will be handled with diplomacy. Comments congratulating Obama, from Dubya and Condi, are a day late and a pound short! There's nothing like an educated fool! In the Black community, she's a sellout and a disgrace to all Black Americans. To follow Gen. Powell, was like Clarence Thomas following Thurgood Marshall!
