I guess it's quite similar to the picture frame idea mentioned earlier in the thread. A modular setup with separate parts feels like a very good idea where these parts/modules could be easily package into different configurations: For example: 1. Configuration for the audiophile - Display module - Playback module (without DAC) 2. Configuration for the beginner - Display module - Playback module (without DAC) - DAC module - SlimServer HW module If these parts also could be nicely docked together with would be a real interesting and also flexible system with solutions for all price ranges and audio requirements. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41476 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

It's a mini linux computer with an ARM processor, built in WiFi, a Wolfson DAC (same as the receiver), an IR emitter, a headphone jack, and a SD slot. Before the announcements I had actually imagined the price to be reversed so the Squeezebox Controller would go around $149 and the Squeezebox Receiver for $299. But now when I think about it, it's really the Controller that has the huge potential. The old SqueezeBox 3 got huge potential because it got a big display which resulted in all sorts of third party plugins that used the display for all kinds of information. The SqueezeBox Receiver doesn't have this potential due to the missing display. The SqueezeBox Controller does have this potential and on top of that it allows third party developers to develop stuff that will execute directly on the Controller itself. This opens it up for things like games and other kind of stuff which has never been possible on the SqueezeBox 3. However, the real potential of the SqueezeBox Controller IMHO is the SD slot and the headphone jack. The headphone jack is obviously going to be enabled, it's just a matter of time, when this happens you will have a portable SqueezeBox which can be used to listen to music from anywhere where you have WiFi access. It might sound a bit strange, but what I'm already waiting for is the second edition of the SqueezeBox Controller. I'm imagining this will have a touch screen and the same format as an iPod. For users that don't already own a SqueezeBox3, the SqueezeBox Duet looks like a good deal at $399. For people that already owns a SqueezeBox and just wants a graphical remote, I agree with some people in this thread that thinks it is a bit overpriced as a graphical remote. I think the problem is to get people to think of the Controller as more than a remote control. I think the main alternative for people that just likes a graphical remote is going to be the iPod Touch, which is priced exactly the same (8GB version) and also works as a portable device already now. The hardware of the iPod Touch is IMHO a lot nicer than the hardware of the Jive Hardware Beta prototype, although I obviously haven't had the chance to compare it with the real SqueezeBox Controller yet. The problem with the iPod Touch is that it currently doesn't allow third party development and it will never be open sourced in the same way as the SqueezeBox Controller. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41805 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Announcing the Squeezebox Duet
To those that likes the SqueezeBox Controller to be a universal remove I can honestly say that I had the exact same idea until I felt the Jive prototype. After having the chance to use the Jive prototype I've changed my feelings a bit. A Harmony remote based on Jive software would be really great, but my feeling is that it will never be as great as SqueezeBox Controller to control the SqueezeBox players. The reason is that the SqueezeBox Controller is optimized to control a SqueezeBox player and Harmony universal remote won't be. The Harmony remote on the other hand will be optimized for controlling several types of equipement which the SqueezeBox Controlder won't be. My feeling is that the optimal solution will be: 1. A Harmony remote which is used for power on your system and doing simple things like launching a random playlist. 2. A dedicated SqueezeBox Controller for browsing your library when you look for something to listen to. If you like one device to solve both these problems it will be a compromise that isn't really good at anything. Using two devices like this will not be a major problem for me, the reason is that in most cases would be able to do what I want from the Harmony remote. In some cases when I get inspired and like to find something different to listen to, I'll pickup the SqueezeBox Controller and browse my library. The SqueezeBox Controller would be a replacement for the laptop which I today use when I like to browse and search my library when I don't now exactly what I'm looking for. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41813 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

You may have no problems selling that $300 remote to your Transporter customers, but I doubt that you will sell many to your Squeezebox customers. I think the major problem with the price of the Controller is that most people still seems think of the Controller as a remote control not a portable SqueezeBox. I wonder how the discussion would have been if Logitech had hold of the release until they had enabled the headphone output and instead released the controller under the name SqueezeBox Portable. I'm guessing some people would still had complained on the price, specifically those that thinks the old SqueezeBox3 is overpriced. But I suspect most people wouldn't really had any problem with $300 for a portable SqueezeBox. The thing is that SqueezeBox Controller can be turned into a SqueezeBox Portable with just a software upgrade. Even if Logitech still hasn't said this straight out, I'm personally pretty sure this is something that is going to happen. It doesn't make sense to me to include the DAC and the headphone output in the Controller if they didn't have this plan. If I've understand it correctly, the DAC on the Controller is the same as the DAC in the Receiver. So the playback sound quality from the Controller might be pretty close to the Receiver sound quality. I think Logitech has priced the Controller based on this plan and not based on the current functionality it offers, this makes it seem a bit expensive at the moment but in just a few months this feeling might change when a software upgrade is available. The physical format will of course still not be as nice as the physical format of most MP3 players. But for a portable player you use inside the house and outside in the garden and to bring to friends houses, I think the current physical format is acceptable. (The Controller cannot control devices other than Receiver/Squeezebox/Transporter, despite having an IR output.) This is true in the current state of the software, but the IR output is there on the Controller hardware, so it is just a matter of writing the software to actually send some signals through the IR output. I'm guessing that Logitech reasoned that the software could be provided after the hardware release. The Controller will IMO never be a good universal remote, but it will probably be able to do a simple control of the devices involved when using the Receiver for playback. For example turning on the A/V receiver and changing it to the correct input. TiredLegs;257009 Wrote: It seems odd that Logitech would release a product (the Receiver) which cannot be controlled by its Harmony remotes (because the Receiver has no IR sensor and no video output), and release a $299 remote (the Controller) that can only control one class of product. In a home theater system with a Receiver, the user would still need at least two remote controls. Logitech, of all companies, should be in the ideal position to unify those functions into a single remote. The missing IR sensor on the Receiver is a limiting factor. As you say, this makes it impossible to control the Receiver with a standard universal remote. The only remote that will be able to control the Receiver is the Controller or some other wifi enabled device. So controlling the Receiver from a Logitech Harmony based remote wouldn't be possible today. Of course you can always have a multi room setup where you have a SqueezeBox 3 in the living room. In that setup you would be able to control the SqueezeBox 3 with a Harmony remote and let the SqueezeBox 3 syncronize with the Reciever in the other room. My personal usage pattern will probably be: 1. Simple listening of random playlists or selecing a single album I know a like to listen to - Will be controlled from the Harmony Universal remote 2. Browsing for something to listen to when I don't know exactly what I'm in the mood for at the moment - Will be controlled from the SqueezeBox Controller. Unfortunately this makes it impossible to have a Receiver as the playback unit, so I'll probably continue to use the SqueezeBox3 for playback in the living room and put the Reciever in another room. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=41805 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Any tips on upgrading Slimserver to 6.5.5?
If you use the TrackStat plugin, make sure you have performed a backup of the TrackStat data before the upgrade. This is done in the TrackStat section of Server Settings/Plugins. Make sure the text file generated from the TrackStat backup actually contains some data and place this somewhere safe where it won't be deleted. I don't think an upgrade normally should destroy any TrackStat data, but in case it does, it is a good idea to have a backup. Re: [slim] Squeezebox Duet and Remote - to buy or not to buy?
PLynas;259480 Wrote: So I guess my question is - just how user friendly is the new remote? Is it easy to find what you are looking for quickly if you have a large music collection and does it offer a big advantage over using the existing remote with the Squeezebox display? I am tempted to buy but it is a lot of money and do not want to make an poor decision. In my opinion the big advantage with SqueezeBox Controller compared to the old IR based SqueezeBox remote is when you are browsing your music library and doesn't know exactly what you want to listen to. In this scenario the advantage of seeing several lines are huge. First I thought of the Controller as a coverart browser, but when I've used it a bit I've realize that the main advantage is not the cover art, the main advantage is the fact that you see several lines. A month ago the Controller was bad when you were scrolling long lists, but during the last week acceleration has been added so this is no longer a problem. So now I can also find a specific album that I'm looking for faster with the Controller than the old IR-remote. The searching(not browsing) functionality on Controller doesn't beat the IR-remote with the LazySearch third party plugin yet, this is still something that needs to be improved. Hopefully they are working on this and I suspect the developer behind LazySearch might also be working on a solution, so I suspect the Controller will get a satisfying solution also for searching. Personally I still feel that for browsing the currently most promising solution is an iPod Touch/iPhone with the third party iPeng skin. The larger screen with touch functionality is IMHO a big advantage. The problem with the iPod Touch/iPhone solution is that it isn't as fast as the Controller when navigating, the performance on a iPod Touch is comparable to a standard PC with the SqueezeCenter web interface. However, I know some people doesn't feel the same way as me regarding the iPod Touch/iPhone solution, some like the fact that you can control the Controller with a single hand while the iPod Touch/iPhone needs two hands to be user friendly. So to sum it up: - The menu structure is basically the same on the Controller as with the IR remote - Browsing is a lot better on the Controller compared to the IR-remote - Searching is currently better on the IR-remote, assuming you have the LazySearch plugin installed. - The Controller is faster than the IR-remote when navigating in the menus -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=42338 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Logitech Losing an Opportunity
A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43198 Question: Do you agree with this posting? - Yes - No - In the middle I voted In the middle, the reason being that I don't think we need a NAS that comes with pre-installed SlimServer, but I do think a small computer with pre-installed SlimServer would be of some interest. The difference being that the focus should be on the computer part and not on the storage/NAS part. The only reason we even mention NAS is because it is actually a small computer, but the problem with most NAS boxes is that they are focused on storage while they also can act as a computer, but they really hasn't got enough power/performance to do so in a good way. SlimServer/SqueezeCenter really needs more performance to give a good consumer experience. I think a box that did something like the following would be of some interest: - Was able to run SlimServer/SqueezeCenter with satisfying speed, a guess is that we are talking about a box with at least 256-512MB memory and maybe 1GHz processor. This is something that almost none of the NAS boxes have. - Come with pre-installed/preconfigured SlimServer/SqueezeCenter - Had a CDROM player and necessary software to allow the consumer to insert a CD and automatically rip it, tag it and put it on the correct place in the music library. There already is a third party prototype plugin in the developers forum that tries to do this. Now, even though I think a device like this would be of interest, I really don't want Logitech to focus on making the hardware for such device. So I think the best solution would be to establish some partnership with a third party vendor which would provide the box and Logitech could still just focus on the SlimServer/SqueezeCenter software part. However, the main obstacle for this this device to be a success will be the price. My guess is that we are talking about a box in a price range a bit below the Mac Mini. The result would be that this will add maybe $500 to the total price of the SqueezeBox system, making it less price competitive compared to solutions from other vendors. I think one of the reasons the SqueezeBox system today feels like pretty cheap is because most people doesn't calculate the computer price into the price of the whole system. Today most people think of the price for a SqueezeBox system like: - SqueezeBox device ($299-$399) - Computer ($0, since they already have a computer) - Amplifier/Speakers ($0, since they already have a amplifier and speakers) Total cost: $299-$399 I think one thing that Logitech would like to avoid is to make people think of the price as: - SqueezeBox device ($299-$399) - SqueezeBox Server ($500) - Amplifier/Speakers ($0, since they already have a amplifier and speakers) Total cost: $799-899 So back to pippins question, which no one seems to be willing to answer: - What would you be prepared to pay for the device suggested in this thread -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43198 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

A poll associated with this post was created, to vote and see the results, please visit http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43198 Question: Do you agree with this posting? - Yes - No - In the middle As Michael said back in 'post #33' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=266916#post266916), a NAS IS a PC. A NAS can do everyting a PC can and a PC can do everything a NAS can, it just depends on which NAS or which PC you get. The main difference between a NAS and a PC is which functionality they focus on. - A NAS typically focus on being good at providing a lot of storage for all devices connected to the network. Many NAS boxes also makes sure that the stored data is safe for hardware failures through automatic backups or RAID support. - A PC typically focus on being good at providing computing power and memory. In my opinion SlimServer needs both storage(for the music files) and computing power/memory(for encoding and browsing speed). If you get an expensive NAS you can often get both storage and enough computing power/memory. However, my belief is that for most people with a medium sized music library, a PC will provide enough storage and computing power/memory to a lower price than a NAS. However, I have a feeling the above isn't the reasons why most people on these forums look for NAS boxes, I think most people that looks for NAS boxes on these forusm does it because they want a small, silent, low power device that is cheap. I'm not sure a NAS-like solution is the best solution for SlimServer if these are the things you look for. SlimServer really needs some computing power, or more specifically it needs more memory than what the cheap NAS devices provides. But there is really no rights or wrongs here, for some people a NAS device is the best solution for SlimServer. This is especially the case if you need a lot of storage for other things than the music files for SlimServer. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=43198 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The problem is not with the SqueezeCenter code, the problem is that the current TrackStat code has presumed that some stuff works in the same way as it does in classic/fishbone skin, the default skin works a bit different which results in that the TrackStat user interface for the default skin just contains too many layout bugs to be usable. I've choosed to disable the browsing abilities in the default skin due to this to avoid a lot of bug reports on TrackStat related to the default skin. SqueezeCenter will be pretty unusable during the Amazon scanning but it shouldn't use a lot of CPU and memory, it should just result in bad response times in the user interface and maybe audio problem if playing music at the same time. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.homeip.net/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=44507 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I feel I'm getting a bit off topic of the original meaning of the thread, but here it comes. NWP Wrote: If the databases are linked, either realtime or with periodic import/exports, how are they linked? They only way I can think of that would be possible would be linking on the field that contains the filepath. I don't know anything about the internal workings of the slimserver db, but I assume there is a field that contains the path to the file. The TrackStat plugin which stores its own persistent information inside the slimserver database uses the following information as links between the TrackStat tables and the slimserver tables: 1. Primary link is musicbrainz id's (slimserver will read the musicbrainz tags from the files and store them in its database) 2. If musicbrainz id's does not exist the filepath is used as link instead. This results that if you have musicbrainz id's in the tags of your files the links will survive a slimserver rescan. If you don't the links will survive a rescan as long as you don't move the file. There are also a third option for linking which might be possible to use, but I think it isn't supported by slimserver yet. This third option is the new PUID defined by musicdns.org. Regarding storage of information in tags, my opinion is that tags is useful for information that doesn't change often and isn't different for different users. I don't want software to change my music files continuously , the reason is that there is to easy that there is a bug in the software that completely destroys the music file. This means that tags should be used for stuff like: - unique ids (PUID's, musicbrainz id's) - artists, albums, track names - track lengths, track numbers Tags should on the other hand not be used for stuff like: - last played time - play counts - ratings (which will be different for different users) However, its still important that all this information is persistently stored somewhere since it can't be easily regenerated. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-trackstat) , 'SQLPlayList' (http://tinyurl.com/pptqy) and 'DynamicPlayList' (http://tinyurl.com/kfrgs) plugins) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=24093 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

[slim] Re: Feature request and discussion: Flash/Ajax/... for UI
When discussing flash interface, please bear in mind that all plugin developers might not be interested in investing $399 in a flash license. I think it is a good idea to keep making language choices for slimserver in such way that its possible to contribute without purchasing expensive development tools. I think we have two main use cases where the web interface needs to work: 1. Control of slimserver using a handheld device - Has to work on small screens - Has to work on as many different handheld devices as possible 2. Control of slimserver from your desktop PC - Has to work on all main operating system (Windows, Linux, MaxOS) - Preferable if it takes advantage of the screen space - Preferable if it integrates with the OS with tray icons, dragdrop, notifications when a new track starts playing and much more. In the second case I think a fat client would really be the best choice for the user, look at Moose for an example. The problem with this is that fat client is really not that easy to combine with operating system independence. So due to this I think a web interface probably is the right way to go also for the second case. Fat clients can still be developed by external developers, but I think it might be a bad idea to include these in the standard slimserver. A third case that probably will be requested more in the future is integration with HTPC software like MCE, MediaPortal, Myth. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.homeip.net) 'My download page' (http://erland.homeip.net/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-trackstat) , 'SQLPlayList' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-sqlplaylist) , 'DynamicPlayList' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-dynamicplaylist) and 'RandomPlayList' (http://erland.homeip.net/download/do/viewapplication?name=slimserver-randomplaylist) plugins) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=25395 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

This took a little while to copy stats across, but since then whenever I set a rating in SC (or play a track), the stats are synced across automatically to MIP too. Unless something has happened very recently with the MusicIP plugin, I think the ratings transfer works through Custom Scan and the MusicIP Statistics Export scanning module provided by TrackStat. The key is that you have checked the Dynamically update statistics parameter in this scanning module. MeSue;348168 Wrote: Sounds like Custom Scan may be the piece of the puzzle I was missing before. Re: [slim] Suggested behaviour on new install
Let's face it, if this product is going to continue living under the Logitech brand it really needs to be adapted for mass market consumption. This means that some options and customization possibilities have to go, I completely agree that the most important part is to avoid them in the setup wizard. This way you can still have more advanced options hidden away in configuration pages which advanced users can find and you can still satisfy mass market users which don't want to be bothered with extra options. This is how iTunes works, this is how Windows Media Player works. It's easy to say that one extra option isn't going to cause any trouble, but you have to realize that you are not going to want the exact same extra option as all other advanced users. So if we go down this route we will end up with a lot of extra options to satisfy everyone. The main difference between SqueezeCenter and other music library software is that SqueezeCenter still allows a lot of customization after the installation. Microsoft and Apple has also tried to avoid this by limiting the options available after the installation because they know that they are a support headache. I'm suspecting Logitech will eventually realize they need go down the same road, however they can't do it as long as a big part of their customer base are geeks and advanced users so it won't happen over the night. Personally I feel that if we really want extra options, two options in the first page of the wizard like this might work: 1. Help me configure my system (strongly recommended) 2. I don't want any help, let me configure everything manually. The first option would be default and would initiate the wizard, the second option would just quit the wizard and let you do everything yourself in the normal settings pages. A solution like this will make the wizard fairly simple both from a user and developer point of view and still allow special advanced users to do their manual choices. The naming of the second option needs to be really scary so newbies doesn't choose it by accident. Another solution might be to just have a skip wizard link somewhere on the first wizard page that does the same thing. By the way, I think I would choose the first option myself, because the wizard really makes it easier to setup an initial installation even though it doesn't make everything the way I want it. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info) 'My download page' (http://erland.isaksson.info/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.isaksson.info/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53406 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

The main limitation with this in my opinion is: - You can't port SqueezePlay to third party hardware and redistribute it without permissions from Logitech. This kind of make sense since Logitech really only earn money on the hardware, so it isn't strange that they like to avoid competitors making money on their free software. The other limitations are more theoretical, sure it doesn't allow you to make and redistribute your own version of SqueezePlay but the number of persons willing to do that and spend time maintaining their own version are probably pretty close to zero anyway. When you think about it, the licensing is pretty logical. Most parts of SqueezeCenter is GPL but it can't be used with third party hardware players anyway so there is no reason to restricting the license. I personally carry a wifi-equipped PDA around most of the time, but still reach for the Controller because it's so much easier to use. If there were a really nice interface for my PDA, I might never use my Controller. I partly agree, I think the iPeng/iSqueeze native applications definitely will be a challenger to the Controller. The Apple license is at least as restricted as the Logitech version, so the reason is IMHO not the licensing but the hardware it self. The iPod/iPhone hardware is better than the Controller hardware in so many ways and the iPod Touch is actually cheaper for the end user than the Controller. The Apple licensing is IMHO even worse than the Logitech license, it requires you to purchase a Apple computer with Leopard OS to even be able to compile the code and it requires you to pay additionally $99 to be able to even install the compiled code on your own iPod/iPhone hardware. Unfortunately I hadn't realized what lossless format was before I got the Squeezebox, so I had already ripped all my records to MP3 for the iPod which I now had to rip again to FLAC format. Re: [slim] Development community less active?
I can only talk for myself, but for me the reasons are the following: - Lua: A new language to learn that you won't have use for anywhere else. - Controller (not player): Any Controller applet could only be accessed through the Controller while a SqueezeCenter plugin could be accessed through all types of remote controls(IR, Controller and iPod/iPhone). So if I can do something as a SqueezeCenter plugin it's preferable to me, especially since I mostly control the Squeezebox with the Harmony IR remote or the iPod/iPhone. - Lack of communication: A general point which I think is similar to what kdf suggests, is that the communication between Logitech and the development community is a lot less today than it was before. Previously you could start a discussion in the development section on the forum and almost always get feedback from the lead developers, today it's possible to post simple questions but it is almost impossible to discuss something regarding the future. Often most of the replies are from end users or from developers that have developed in other projects but not for SqueezeCenter. It should be said that the situation is a bit better regarding questions/discussions on some parts of the code (user interface related stuff). Personally I'm really missing the vision regarding the future, but I suppose it's a good idea for Logitech to keep that for themselves from a business point of view since it might include future products which they don't want anyone to know about yet. The result of all this is that as a third party developer you kind of loose interest when no one seems to be interested in your thoughts, why contribute if there is no interest ? My personal feeling is that communication is the key element to keep the me personally interested in the future, I'm not sure if other third party developers feels the same. I'm not sure if the reason for all this is the Logitech purchase or if it's caused by the fact that some(one?) of the lead developers decided to continue on another road instead of continue as a Logitech employee. If it's caused by the latter things might improve in the future when new employees fully take over the role of the lost employee(s). I'm pretty sure the reasons for less activity isn't caused by the Controller source code licensing as someone suggested in another thread/post, but others might feel different than me regarding this. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info) 'My download page' (http://erland.isaksson.info/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.isaksson.info/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=53879 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Problems with Play Next in 7.2?
I think the problem is that you have the Enable filtering on all playlists option in Custom Skip settings enabled. The result is that when you add tracks manually, it will check them against active filters in Custom Skip and if it matches it will be removed when it is about to start to play. Does it work if you add a track that can't match the currently active skipping filter in the Custom Skip plugin ? I'm guessing that you would really like the track to be played even if it matches your skipping filter ? I'm not completely sure what the best behavior would be here, let's say we have the following scenario: We have a skipping filter that says we don't want to play tracks rated below 3. - If we play a Random Mix playlist we definitely want those low rated tracks skipped. - If we play a standard saved playlist I also suspect we want those low rated tracks skipped. - If we hit play on an artist we probably also want those low rated tracks skipped. - If we hit play on an album I'm not sure what we want. - If we hit play on a specific track we probably want it to be played even if it matches the skipping filter. The problem with the last scenario is just that other people might use this to disallow adult tracks in the kids room and they probably also want to skip in the last scenario. The problem you are seeing should only be seen when the Enable filtering on all playlists option is enabled. The problem when this option is enabled is that the Custom Skip plugin can't differ how the tracks are added. I could possibly add a special case so tracks added manually when a Dynamic Playlist is active is never skipped, but I'm not sure that would give the expected behavior in all the scenarios listed above. Any suggestions on which behavior you (or someone else) would like would be appreciated. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info) 'My download page' (http://erland.isaksson.info/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.isaksson.info/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=52318 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Server delay when browsing folders
Those errors are probably due to: http://bugs.slimdevices.com/show_bug.cgi?id=9423 It's caused by a database that has been upgraded since 6.5 through 7.0.0 to a current release. The easiest way to fix them without upgrading to 7.3 is: 1. Shutdown SqueezeCenter 2. Delete the Cache directory 3. Startup SqueezeCenter and perform a full rescan NOTE The above sequence will result in that all your TrackStat statistics are lost, so make sure you have a working TrackStat backup which you can restore afterwards. I'm not sure you will be able to create a working backup when the installation is in the current state, so make really sure you have a backup file with contents and not just an empty one. By the way, I don't think those errors have anything to do with the performance issues but I'm not completely sure. Once you get the price of the Controller down, the perceived value added from the lower price (from the consumer's point of view) will hopefully produce higher profits through a higher volume of sales, not a higher mark up on each Controller sold. And more Controller sales will in turn drive further sales of the other Slim Device products. And lowering the price of the Controller would justify raising the price of the Receiver. Have you seen other technology products that have raised their price after introduction ? It happens in Europe due to the currency exchange rates but besides that it's very hard to do and get acceptance. The Controller hardware has always felt expensive in comparison to the iPod Touch hardware to me. However, I think the idea is that most customers will buy the Duet and not a separate Controller and the Duet price is good. For people that just want the Controller, the iPod Touch is an attractive solution and in my opinion it will still be unless the Controller price is decreased to something like $150. A decrease like that is obviously not going to happen in the close future. When comparing the Controller and the iPod Touch solutions, you will have to realize: - The Controller is still more feature rich, it basically support almost all features available in SqueezeCenter. Besides this it also supports SqueezeNetwork. - The Controller has hard buttons which makes it easier to control in the dark than the iPod Touch, the Controller is also easier to control with a single hand than the iPod Touch. - The iPeng Skin version is close to the Controller regarding important features, but it still lacks the SqueezeNetwork support and the performance isn't as good as the Controller - The iPeng Native version still needs more features to be able to compete with the Controller as the single remote for your Squeezebox. It works really good already today for some people but it won't work for others depending on which features you need. The big advantage with the iPod Touch as I see it is that you also get a portable player. The Controller have audio playback support in 7.3 but it still lacks the physical format and local storage that makes it suitable to put in your pocket when you are leaving the house. In the long run I think the iPod Touch is going to win as a remote control for people that don't want the complete Duet package. However, today this is still not the case, many people need more features than what the iPod Touch native solutions currently offers or need better performance than what you get for the skin version. In the end all this might not be a bad situation for Logitech, because they are going to sell Squeezebox players independent if a user selects to control it with a Controller or a iPod Touch. A user that have a iPod Touch can buy a cheap Receiver to get a player for it, a user that doesn't have a iPod Touch can buy a Duet to get a cheap package with a graphical remote and a player. IMHO, the focus should be to make sure that a solution with AppleTV + Apple AirportExpress can't compete with a Squeezebox solution. To do this there are probably other things than the remote control that needs to be in focus. In this scenario its a pretty good idea to let third party developers handle the iPod Touch applications and skins and focus Logitech resources on other parts of the package. -- erland Erland Isaksson 'My homepage' (http://erland.isaksson.info) 'My download page' (http://erland.isaksson.info/download) (Developer of 'TrackStat, SQLPlayList, DynamicPlayList, Custom Browse, Custom Scan, Custom Skip, Multi Library and Database Query plugins' (http://wiki.erland.isaksson.info/index.php/Category:SlimServer)) erland's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=3124 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=55543 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I don't think the question is if Logitech is committed. There's definitely a reason why Logitech bought SlimDevices and I'm pretty sure some of the main reasons are that they believe in the products and that they were interested in the open source development philosophy. However, the question here isn't really if Logitech is committed, the question is if the original SlimDevices employees and founders are interested in continuing on the Logitech road or if they like a completely new challenge. I haven't seen any indication yet regarding missing commitment to the product, but I have seen a difference in the interaction with the development community. The interaction with the development community has definitely changed since the Logitech purchase, from my point of view a lot more stuff happens behind closed doors today compared to before the Logitech purchase. Although, the reason for this might not actually be the Logitech purchase, it could also be that there are more employees today and that the roles among the lead developers are different today than before. It shall also be said that I'm not sure this is a bad thing for the company, it's just one of the things that are different today compared to before. I think Logitech bought both the products but most importantly I also think a main reason was that they were interested in the development philosophy used. This also makes me think that Logitech wants the original employees and founders to remain, because if the original employees and founders are lost there is a huge risk that the development philosophy and community also is lost in the process. So the real risk as I see it is if the original employees and founders doesn't feel like continuing working under Logitech. I'm pretty sure the intention was to make this work and probably still is, so I don't think we should be worrying yet. There were a lot of people worrying directly after the purchase that everything was going to be lost, but I think most arguments form these has so far been proven to be wrong. The fact that most new developers earlier was part of the community is also a good thing, from my point of view this is an indication that Logitech really wants the open source development philosophy to continue. Sorry if this is getting a bit off topic. radish;368767 Wrote: Forget about closing SC, it basically can't be done (legally or technically). The open source model works well for this product and I simply don't see any reason to change. A closed source model would probably have to be based on completely new code which doesn't make much sense. There is no way legally to change the current SqueezeCenter code to a closed source model. The only reason to change the open source model would be if Logitech decided to completely change the technology to something other than Perl. However, with the current crew this doesn't make much sense as it would be a huge investment. The question isn't really if this is going to continue to be open source, the question is if we will see the same involvement from the development community in the future. The interest of helping a small company like SlimDevices for free is one thing, doing the same for a large corporation like Logitech is a completely different thing, especially if development of the core is handled pretty much behind closed doors. radish;368767 Wrote: What Logitech have done, which incidentally I think has been handled really well, is to reinforce their in-house team with skilled devs who _can_ be managed and scheduled to implement core things which are determined to be essential. That leaves the external devs to tweak and add the kind of scratch-an-itch enhancements that are so awesome on the SB platform and so missing with the competition. I completely agree, this is very smart and is probably the only way to get economics and keep up with the competition. You have to have a in-house team that is large enough to take decision and do development based on time schedules and economic factors. The trick here is still to keep up the interaction with the development community if you like people to continue long term community commitments. There will always be developers available that make a single plugin they need and then disappears, but to make sure community developers stays communication is extremely important as I see it. Unfortunately, my personal feeling is that this is something that we see less of today compared to before. Just look at how discussions are handled in the Development section of the forum, many are left unanswered or without involvement from the Logitech crew. I suspect discussions still are happening among the Logitech crew but they probably happen behind closed doors. With a lot of community development there is a huge risk that schedules will slide and features not interesting from an economic point of view will get focus. This is something that is IMHO something that can be seen in many open source project. radish;368767 Wrote: Really? Never heard of a company relying on Linux? Or Apache? Or MySQL? Of course, the open source philosophy also makes it possible for you to personally get involved to make sure it gets finished in time. For closed sourced commercial products you can often get a planned release date, for open source projects this often doesn't exist (with some exceptions).
