Perhaps iptables or your kernel needs to be upgraded.

Could you please tell me why and how can I change that.

Same place as the new ones, . Click on "DOWNLOAD DRIVERS",
then under "For Linux Users" click on "Linux Display Drivers", and you'll
see a list, with 3123 at the top and 2960 right under it. Or you can
click on this: .
I always download the tar files into /home/spock/Nvidia, become root or
cd there as root from another console, copy the files to /usr, cd to /usr,
untar the files and do make install in the kernel and GLX directories,
go to /etc/X11, do: mv XF86Config /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.old, cd to
/home/settings where I keep a copy of the XF86Config-4 file from past
installs, cp it to /etc/X11, and I'm good to go.

[expert] GTK Font Override in 9.0?

2002-09-29 Thread Jerry A!

I set a custom font in my .gtkrc (via gtk-switch-themes) and I'm
noticing incosistent behavior applying the custom font.

For instance, xmtr, Samsung's printer utility, SJog, all work
correctly. However, aumix, gkrellm, AbiWord, Gnumeric don't respect the
.gtkrc setting.

Now the odd part is that the rest of the stuff set in .gtkrc does work
correctly (widgets, buttons, colors, .etc). It's just the fonts that
seem to be flaky.

This is the same setup that I've always used and have also used on other
OS's w/out any problems.

So, I wondering, has anyone seen similar behavior? Could I be missing a
package to affect applying the settings? Etc...

Thanks in advance.

Sorry, this got attached to the wrong thread (I started looking back
to see if you had stated what your hardware was and got lost I
guess).

Anyway, you could also try to disable agp thru the config file:
Option "NvAGP" "0"
of course it will probably kill 3d acceleration, but X might start.

The only time I have noticed this phenomenon is when some drives were
mishandled, without proper static protection. And there were crashes.

I have seen DOA's, but they've been rare.

Raid 0+1 would seem a good approach for this.

I agree with the SDRAM sentiment, but I do not agree that newer is
always better. It always takes the linux driver contributors time to
catch up to the latest chipsets. The HPT373 Raid chipset is a prime
example of this.  A concern because my next system board will have one;
and I'd like to be running a distro that can use that IDE bus.

So staying behind the front lines with a mobo that's going to run Linux
is offtimes a smart move. It gives the manufacturers time to work the
lemons out of the boards and the developers time to write the hardware
support in.

If you are doing mp3 or video encoding then you need FPU speed; and the
"game" benches are once again the way to go.

> So much of Tom's hardware doesn't speak to me. I'd like to avoid spending a
> lot of time on both hardware compatibility and software installation issues,
> I have lots of things to do.

Well, I don't think the speaking is the problem, it's the listening part
that is. I've been using this site as a resource for a long time,
because there is a need to evaluate mobos from the standpoints that I've
given URL's for. The secret is that by the time these mobos pass their
tests and give their performance results, you can be pretty sure that
you've got a mobo that will work, especially if there are other mobos
out there with the same chipset that are running Linux.

Red Hat in the past has said that there are very few mobos that don't
run their distro (the only one I've seen that they listed as problematic
was a Supermicro), and that holds true for Mandrake, as long as you are
choosy about where you get your information from. Roundup reviews are
the best reviews that exist for mobos. A single mobo review that does
not allow a system board to compete with other boards is *useless*.
(Unless you originally located the mobo with a roundup.) True mobo
evaluation does not occur in a vacuum, it occurs within the context of
competition; and that means other system boards. Roundup reviews are
*expensive* to conduct. Therefore they are rare. So when you do find
one, like this eighteen motherboard review, it's worth your while to sit
up and pay attention.

The reason I do is because as the guy in charge of a computer
fabrication line, it was my task to order 20 or more mobos for
evaluation at a time (plus R&D them) before the prototyping and launch
of a new model. There was no internet, there were no mobo reviews, and
the trade rags were for locating and ordering, not judging. So we did
it the hard way; and it cost big bucks, and big time. Basically I was
doing roundup reviews at the time and did'nt realize it.

Now we have the internet and the advantage of performance and stability
reviews. To me, THD is like a free ride. So yes, I'm damn sure going
to take advantage of them; and if I'm somewhat skittish for any reason,
I'll fire up google and see if anybody's had direct linux experience
with the board. Not hard to do. So far I have not needed to because
there are very few linux incompatible boards out there and almost none
of them make it to the THD roundup reviews. If anybody's inclined, they
can certainly do a double check on the web. If another quality board
with the same chipset as the one you are considering is running Linux,
then that puts you in the middle of the ball park anyway. Which is the
case with just about the entire review here. I also went thru a real
bunch of sites before I took THD serious, so it's not like I haven't
been looking around.

Here is a strange twist. Remember how I said I actually got sound and the
first log on setup screens? Nothing since. Just the blue wallpaper and the
little mouse clock until about 2 minutes later it pops back to a bash prompt.

The mouse service stops quite a bit. Trying service gpm stop won't work,
saying "failed" since it is already stopped. You can do a start and it will
respond with ok. Anybody have any ideas why this service would stop on a
regular basis? While X is loading the mouse service is running because I can
move the clock/mouse pointer while it is trying fire up. Right this very
instant, it will not stay loaded. ??

I'm using a Gigabyte MB with a Promise raid controller, USB 2.0, Firewire. I
disabled all the above to see if that made a difference. none. ??

I'm really stumped on this one. I'm thinking I need to increase the debug
level so we can get more info on the error log. I've been looking but so far
I've not found the switch to do so. Xfree.org's web site pretty much is
spartan. Very hard to find anything there.

[expert] USB CD Writer

Has anyone managed to get a USB (1.1) cd-rw working with Mandrake?

I have an Acer (6424, I think--6x4x24 anyhow) and I can _read_ CDs from it,
just fine. However, cdrecord -scanbus hangs (with usb-uhci) or (with uhci)
says:

When I go into MCC/Mount Points/CD Burner, it says "Device: scd0"... I've
tried cdrecord dev=/dev/scd0 (and "/dev/scd0:0,0,0", "/dev/sg0",
"/dev/sg0:0,0,0" and "0,0,0") to no avail. I've tried un-plugging my usb

Suggestions anyone?

Most PCI modems are winmodems, which means either they don't work or
only work with propietary drivers, with a very few
  exceptions.

Gee. modems suck. Hang some antennas and share a decent connection.

The actiontec "call waiting" modems have Lucent chipsets and a real hardware
engine. With 8.2 you needed a makedev/setserial script to get them going. I
will try 9.0 in a couple of days.

The one "topic" I tried was "ok". If I spent some more time with it, I might
have even gotten to like it.

Vox is right in that externals are the easiest to use, If you are doing a lot
of interactive stuff, the connect times on a v.34 are quicker than v.90 or
v.92. If you are doing a lot of downloads, try to find a better connection.
Even ISDN is a delight compared to analog.

I'd be interested in your results. I am on a crusade to learn what works for
regular people as opposed to the technical issues between "x" and "y"
chipsets and motherboard features.

Jim Tarvid

I have had good luck with Lucent win-modems for about a year.

I'm not, both my scanner and web cam are doing just fine. But I've
read of ppl having trouble with their zips and usb 2.0 stuff. I
think the zips are incorrect entries in fstab tho mostly. and I

Hey,

Thanks a lot for answering my question. Didn't think anyone would answer
it after this long. Yes, I had already figured out the relevant things a
couple of days back and had it working. Thanks anyways.

Altough, The upgrade is working fine over the past 2 weeks. But, I still
feel that a complete fresh install is always the best way to go. Maybe it's
just pyschological !!

1. My laptop Compaq 12XL125 (30 Gb HDD, 192 Mb RAM with 8 Mb shared Video
RAM) has the trident i7/DSTN graphics card. I always found that in Windows
my laptop runs super smooth with the graphics but, in Linux it is pretty
slow and draggy. Why?? According to XFree86, the "trident" driver is accelerated.
But, it sure doesn't feel like it. My current resolution is 1024x768 with
16 bpp which gives bearable system (GUI) performance for now. I also found
that on desktops or laptops with dedicated Graphics cards, Linux was super-duper
fast !!! This is driving me crazy and I am thinking of buying a new laptop
now.

2. Also, the laptop never shuts down completely !! it shuts down for a moment
and the Hard disk starts up instantly without starting the computer. I have
to manually shut the laptop. Looks like some Power management problem.

Any tips, suggestions, tweaks?

Also, I am trying to find some reviews on Mandrake9.0 but other than the ones on Mandrakeforum I can't find any.  How have you guys found it so far or can you post some web addresses.  Thanks in advance.

Well, number one, you're logging into window manager as root. please
try user. Also, add Option "NvAGP" "1" to your config file Section
"Device" and try again as user.

OH you did, well, try that AGP option mentioned above.

Well, they say it can conflict with some set ups. If that option
doesn't work, as root at that bash prompt, try: service gpm stop
first and see it that is the problem. Log in as user.

WOW! I was of the mistaken opinion that running that config tool would

What happens is X starts to load, looking beautiful, I see an Nvidia full
scren logo, then I get a red wallpaper
screen, I see the little please wait clock that moves if I move the mouse. I
see lots of hard drive activity for probably about two minutes and then it
pops back to the bash prompt with the error log I attached. That is what
makes me think I'm so darned close.

I just tried it via a regular user account and it "seemed" to go farther. I
got audio of the startup wave file, I even got the first time you log in
asking me for setup information to send to Mandrake. I cancelled out of that,
got lots of hard drive activity then poof, back to the bash prompt. No mouse
again.

That said, I'm not beginning to think that the mouse GPM service that is
dying may be related to my problems. Maybe I need to figure out why this is
dying first. ??

I think this may start taking a turn away from XF86Config. See what you think.

I do a service GPM restart and it says failed to stop and then starts up.
If I move the mouse it will usually say
===ERROR===: [mice.c(1727)]:
imps2:PS/2 mouse failed init

If I reboot it it fine. The only thing that doesn't add up, is the config
file says to bring up X even if the mouse fails! So i'm a little perplexed on
why X is failing after such a long period of attemtping to load, but no
errors. maybe I'll have to increase the debug level?

An easy way out is use: Driver 'vesa'.
Another way is to download the drivers from nvidia.com; uncompress them
and run 'make', then use: Driver 'nividia'

2002-09-29 Thread Praedor Tempus

I've run into a bit of a problem concerning printing myself so I'll jump into
this thread and ask away.

I always go with cups anymore. I don't even care to install anything for the
old lpr/lpd system. I don't know when or how this occured but lately I am
stuck with lpr and cannot go back to cups. I can START cups OK, and it is
set to start at bootup, but if I open up kcontrol and try to change the print
system from lpr to cups, it refuses to let me even if I am logged in as root.
It flashes quickly and goes right back to lpr-based printing.

I am running Mandrake 8.2 with KDE 3.0.1. I have the following cups-related
rpms installed:
cups-1.1.14-2mdk
cups-drivers-1.1-48.1mdk
libcups1-1.1.14-2mdk
cups-common-1.1.14-2mdk

The switch to kde 3.0.1 was relatively recent and MAY have coincided with the
loss of ability to use/print through cups. How do I get cups back? I have
tried running printerdrake whatnot but am not able to get cups back as my one
and only printing system.

[expert] Mdk 9.0 Remember Windows Positions?

2002-09-29 Thread Chuck Stuettgen

Okay, I give up...

I've installed 9.0 and overall I'm satisfied, however there is one thing
that is driving me crazy.

In Gnome, every application opens in the same location, the upper left
corner, no matter where I position the window, the next time I open it
the application are alway in the upper left corner. Some of the apps
will remember their size, but none will remember their last position.

Anyone have any ideas on how to get Gnome2 to remember the size and
positions of the windows??

he can have one if he uses the nvidia drivers. I upgraded to gf4 from
and gf2 while running 8.2 and iir I didn't have to do anything - but
I've already using nvidia drivers. That's why I told him at the very
beginning of this adventure he would /have/ to use them.

tho I never entertained the notion of him using XFree86-3.3.6. I'm
not sure of his goals, but guessing he'd like 3d acceleration tho, or
else could have gotten alot cheaper card. In which case he's gonna
have to use XFree86-4.X.x & nvidia drivers.

Some people just really have a hard time with getting those drivers
working the first couple of times they have to, even tho it's gotten
soo easy now. I remember when we had to hunt down all the
conflicting libraries ourselves and make our own links for other apps
to be able to use them - when tarballs were all there were and had to
read the readme to get the compiling options - and we were grateful
for 'em!

[expert] [Help!]Can't Print on MDK9.0

2002-09-29 Thread g884414 his

[Sorry, I use Linux for a long while, but I'm not a expert,
so I send this to "newbie" & "Expert".]

Mandrake 9.0 is a really nice distribution. I think it's a
important milestone that Linux is also good to be used for
"End Users", at least in Chinese environment. As a loyal
Linux fan, I will not feel embarrassed to introduce the
end users to use it anymore, at least in Taiwan, after
the MDK9.0 published. ^_^

But I have an problem in printing, and I want to ask for help.
My printer is HP Laser Jet 1000, and I install the driver
which MDK 9.0 recommended (GhostScript + pbmtozjs).

At first, it could correctly print out the test paper and a
Chinese HTML file once. After it, the printer will not do
anything anymore. I set it up again and again, push the
buttom "print" of the Mozilla again and again, and I could
see the queues of the printer. But the printing processes
seem just "gone" or "ignored" by the printer. I can't
get any output or the error message. I just don't know what's
the problem. the driver? or the MDK9.0 or KDE3.0 ?
So I don't know where to look for the troubleshooting to read.

Sorry, I don't know if I express enough details or not. But
I really want to know how to figure out this problem.
Without this, MDK9.0 is the greatest distribution I 've ever
met, and I will promote it very proudly to all my friends
and others who are still trapped in M$-Windows. ^_^

Thanx for your help!
I'll appreciate it very much!

Best Regards.

Hmm... well there seems to be more to it. Since normally you can use the
mouse services from the bash prompt too. I mean, since I'm only at the bash
prompt, it is nice to be able to mouse over a work and then paste it to the
command line. When this process dies, then I can no longer do that either.

I'm so stinking close to getting X to start, but no joy yet. If I use that
config took you suggest, it says it works fine in test mode, but then when I
try to fire up the xwindows it dies. I've been tweaking the config file for
over an hour now. It seems that the config tool is making improper lines to
the config file.

Ok, see here, one should XFdrake with mandrake - really! I'm not

switched to nvidia never did get X going using xf86config. The first

you need a driver section above in your card device section.
Driver "nvidia"

not sure about that svga entry. I'd comment it out and see if it were
me.

I didn't see any errors there. What was the problem again? No 3d
acceleration?

Anyway, my advice is to rename this file whateveritis.bak and exit out
of X to init3 (terminal) and run XFdrake --noauto --expert, choose
geforce4 (generic). Edit XF86Config-4 file (make sure Load "glx" is
there and change "nv" to "nvidia". Then rmmod NVdriver, modprobe
NVdriver (just to be on the safe side presuming you've already
installed nvidia drivers - have you?). and startx.

Thats exactly what I do - and be prepared to renew some links that get killed

Have you tried the command line?

Try this:

# cdrecord -v dev=2,0,0 speed=4 -eject -data

where 'dev=2,0,0' is the info I read from your -scanbus above and
is the location and file of the iso image.

You may also change the speed to your CDRW's abilities. OTOH I'd keep
the speed rather conservative, meaning low to avoid too amyn coasters.
You can always increase speed after the first trials.

I notice that this is mentioned in the 64 page readme file that came with the
driver.

The problem I'm having now is that they make some assumptions about what my
config file looks like and I'm having trouble reading between the lines. the
first time I guessed at what I needed, it started to come up but died. I
wonder if I might be wiser to use XF86configurator to make fresh one, but
what tool do I use to configure XF86config-4? it seems the old tools just
modify the old one. It has been quite awhile since I've fooled with the old
manual way of doing things. :) Since they have gone to 4.x of Xfree I've not
kept up.

Re: [expert] PRINTING REMOTE FILES IN LOCAL PRINTER

2002-09-29 Thread James Sparenberg

Unfortunately when you are connected to a remote box its the same as if
you were on the console of that remote box. In other words it has none
of the facilities of the box your keyboard is attached to. In short a
telnet or ssh session is really just like having a very very long cable
from that computer to your monitor. So if you print a file on that box
it will go to that boxes printer. Now if that box and yours are on the
same lan it would be possible to install a remote cups printer or samba
printer on it so that it can access your printer. But over the net this
isn't the case. Your best bet is to ftp it to the box connected to your
keyboard and print it locally.

Well, if you feel it's necessary, I would use XFdrake --noexpert
--noauto and choose the closest to gf4 (seems like that might even
be in there now).Yeah, the format has changed recently slightly,
but I'm not so sure it's not a mandrake thing. But I got to tell you
that every distros XF86Config-4 looks different from the examples
seen and from each other. suse's is a big ole ugly mess with a
warning not to edit it manually! redhat's is called XF86Config and
looks strange. But one common thread is the basic items are there
even if they look a little different.

[s@tuxmachine]:docs$ cat XF86Config-4

[expert] lpd isn't running but works??

2002-09-29 Thread SainTiss

Hi,

Lpd isn't running on my system, but yet KDE seems to be configured as a
"Generic UNIX LPD printing system", and it works!
Also, lpr works (I thought that was an lpd command too?)

I thought MDK used cups (which *is* running)

Or are all lpd related things just "redirected" to cups?

Thanks

Hans

Dear Andy;
I had a similar problem with my laptop using Mandrake 7.2 and the
problem arised in the fact that the BIOS had the PCMCIA configurated as
"automatic"; I changed this and it runed well.

I hope this will help you to solve the problem; mandrake 9 is really
impressive.

No, I have it in mine. I did notice that the screensavers were sparce
until I installed kdeartwork from cooker after install. It's in the
package check list, but isn't in isos or something cuz it don't get
installed. So, maybe they are in that same kdeartwork rpm.

The software is looking for 2.95 not 2.96. This might be an issue to the software.
In my experience software demanding 2.95 does not accept 2.96.

It shoudln't as past releases have had more than one version available. The issue
_might_ be, if indeed the software accepts 2.96, will it also accept it when it won't
be the default version. 3.2 will still be linked to gcc.

This is a classic, and predictable, problem with Linux closed source (where
you're only given binary files and can't compile from scratch).

The Gnu C(++) compiler and libraries has been upgraded to version 3.2 in
Mandrake 9.0. Unfortunately, a lot of commercial applications have been
compiled to expect gcc 2.9x so will fail with the default installation of
9.0.

The trick is to install 2.96 as well as 3.2 by doing, as root,

urpmi gcc2.96
urpmi gcc2.96-cpp
urpmi gcc2.96-colorgcc
urpmi gcc2.96-c++

Now, before you do that, can someone confirm having gcc 2.96 and gcc 3.2
installed at the same time won't cause problems?

Dear Andy;
I had a similar problem with my laptop using Mandrake 7.2 and the
problem arised in the fact that the BIOS had the PCMCIA configurated as
"automatic"; I changed this and it runed well.

I hope this will help you to solve the problem; mandrake 9 is really
impressive.

No problem. Have you tried using the admin page at localhost port 631?
If not, see the status of the printer, and try printing a test page.
You can also add and configure printers from there. Other than that, I'm
not sure what to say. I have an old Canon BJ-20 which works without a
problem, so I've never had to troubleshoot.

[expert] Drakprofile for 9.0???

2002-09-29 Thread falcaraz

Dear friends,
One of the more impressive things we cand did with Mandrake was swicht
the internet conection profiles on laptops using drakprofile.
I had two profiles, one for home and the other for office and was very
eassy change the internet parameters using drakprofile. But, under 9.0
there is not a new drakprofile rpm and the old one give me lots of
errors when I try to create new profiles and also when I try to switch
from one to another. So, is not runing at all (perhaps I am wrong, but I
think that this is related with the news draktools relesed wih 9.0).

Will mandrake release a new drakprofile release for 9.0?

If not; there is or there will be another way to easily switch between
profiles?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help;

Yours sincerely

Dear all,

I have just installed 9.0 and am in the process of installing all other
apps that I need for my work. Unfortunately, I have the following
problems trying to install some image processing software that I use. In
7.2, 8.0, 8.1 & 8.2 I had no problems at all...! Here is the blurb:

It looks as though you are running Linux 2.4.
Warning: You will need g++ version 2.95 for using the HALCON/C++
interface!

Which directory would you like to install HALCON in [/usr/local/halcon]

/opt/halcon does not exist. Would you like it to be created (Y/n)? Y

identical to the printed manuals is desired online for reading with
the Adobe Acrobat reader.

Optionally, you can install parts of the documentation in German.
At the moment, only the reference manuals are available, either as
HTML or PDF. No user's manuals and no detailed documentation for
individual framegrabbers are available.
Would you like to install any part of the German documentation (y/N)? N

The HALCON example images may be installed if the demo programs are
to be run. However, they can be read in from the HALCON CD if the
environment variable HALCONIMAGES is set to $CDROM/images, where
$CDROM is the directory where the HALCON CD is mounted.
Would you like to install the example images (Y/n)? Y
foreach: No match.
[root@b55-aw cdrom]#

--

It then bums out at the end. My PC is:

P3 800
256Mb RAM
20Gb HD, partitioned as:

~5Gb '/' (as ReiserFS)
~400Mb swap
~14Gb 'home' (as ReiserFS)

Does anyone out there have any clues? Maybe there a problem with tar!?!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Andy

[expert] Unable to sync Handspring Visor on 9.0

2002-09-29 Thread Dale Morris

I am unable to sync my handspring visor on Mandrake 9.0. I know I don't
have it set up properly, but can't find what USB port to link it to.
There is no /dev/USB* listed to make the symlink to /dev/pilot.

Is there a different way of doing this in 9.0? Is there something I need
to change in the boot config file?

I have looked everywhere for instruction on this, searched google and
Mandrake forum, but can't find anything..

thanks

Re: [expert] Motherboard Question

2002-09-29 Thread tarvid

Much wisdom in the reponse but...

1) Stability is an issue but most of my problems show up in the disk
subsystem. I have had some nasty crashes which went away when I replaced the
drives.

2) Performance is an issue but I suspect that too is in the disk subsystem.
Processing HTTP logs is the biggest single burder on my servers. That
generates tons of stuff few people read, so I think changing content of log
analysis will take care of that one. Mail is a close second but that one is
solved by judicious non-use of synced log files.

3) When I rebuild a server, newer technology is better than older and larger
aggregates of RAM are better than smaller. The latter is probably the more
important of the two so I would rather use single 512MB PC2100 than two 256MB
faster SDRAMs.

4) Workstations are a different matter. I am content with much less than a
game player but I do have an urge for decent multimedia - DVD , 6 channel
sound, fast ripping. The most notable performance issue is fast program
loading. That too is in the disk subsystem.

So much of Tom's hardware doesn't speak to me. I'd like to avoid spending a
lot of time on both hardware compatibility and software installation issues,
I have lots of things to do.

Unfortunately, what we see are reports of people having problems and others
speculating on the latest whiz bang technology. It would be much more useful
if someone maintained a database of "this worked for me".

2002-09-29 Thread Franki

Hi guys,

Got a small problem,

we have a test server, using http over a high port. (eg mydomain.com:10001)

its actually a win2000 box, but I the question is basically a linux one..

If i generate a keypair request on the win box, can I use that to create a
self signed Cert that I can install on the winblows box???

Also, can I bind a cert to a domain/port setup?? or must I create a sub
domain without the port number and bind the cert to that..???
(meaning i don't want the cert bound to the normal domain, it must be the
domain/port or a subdomain...

How does webmin do it??

I don't want to go the MCS route because its already setup for a trusted CA
for our verisign cert.

Any tips would be fantastic here...

many thanks..

I consider myself a newbie, but I did (finally) manage to get a mail

Try looking at

change (on Mandrake 7.2) to get a mail server working.

(I have a lot more information on a postfix based email server on

[expert] where's libqt.so?

2002-09-29 Thread SainTiss

Hi,

it seems like libqt.so isn't included in MDK9...
I can only find libqt-mt.so, which is the threaded version...

It might just work fine, but the problem is that qmake.conf lists:
QMAKE_LIBS_QT   = -lqt
QMAKE_LIBS_QT_THREAD= -lqt-mt

so any non-threaded app built with qmake, still wants libqt...

Is this a "bug" in qmake.conf?

Thanks

Hans

Works fine. You might also want to look at the low-latency and
pre-emptible kernel patches if you're using the stock Linus kernel.

While you're editing XF86Config-4 add a line:
 Load "glx"
in Section "module"

I agree that this way is so much easier, and it works no matter what version

the defualt kernel in either 8.2 or 9.0 is a 2.4.x kernel, while earlier
versions (7.2 and back for sure, others may or may not have,) installed a
2.2.x series kernel. one of the differences was in how USB was handled. there
is a way to chose which of a few kernels are used at the install.

I can see right off that you've been doing your homework. Not bad.
There are some concerns with the newer DDR400 based mobos, though. This
is evident by looking at the following:

http://www17.tomshardware.com/mainboard/02q3/020905/kt400-11.html#opengl_benchmarks

And the Directx benchmarks as well. The conclusion of this article is
interesting:

http://www17.tomshardware.com/mainboard/02q3/020905/kt400-16.html

But not truly "conclusive". Because if later day bios upgrades are able
to fix the memory standards that as of right now have not been
finalized, then the KT4 Ultra may well be the best choice for the
future. As you can see right now the KT333's are showing faster
benches. A bios upgrade may well fix that, however.

Regarding the KT3 Ultra, this pick is perhaps a little confusing. If
you are considering a mobo with KT333 architecture, there are many more
superior choices available. Here are the benchmarks for a roundup of 18
mobos that includes the KT3 Ultra:

http://www17.tomshardware.com/mainboard/02q2/020509/kt333-29.html

This in fact was the roundup that I was using to choose my next mobo.
As of now tho, the memory architecture has moved onward and I will
probably wait for Abit to release a KT400 mobo. The advantage with this
set of mobos is that they have been out for awhile and they are better
known personalitywise. It is very unlikely that you will see any
problems with the top performers in this list. Speaking of performance,
the KT3 Ultra is in the bottom half of both the opengl and directx
benchmarks. Dis is not good.

When I was planning on getting one of these, I was looking at three:

1) Epox EP-8K3A+ -- Pros: Top performer, solid brand, reputation for
dependability

Cons: Unsure of overclocking virtues compared to Abit AT7

2) Enmic 8TTX2+ -- Pros: German manufacturer, looked solid, top
performer; real fast and stable

Cons: New company, no history, unsure of overclocking virtues compared
to AT7

3) Abit AT7 -- Pros: I have extensive prior experience with this
brand and know the overclocking and stability virtues of this brand, the
quality has never let me down.

Cons: Not a top performer (unless overclocked !) hehe

In which case it can theoretically exceed the default performance of any
of the 18. Depending on CPU limitations.

Let me smash a few myths right off the bat. 1) An overclocking mobo is
typically superior stability (and quality) wise to a mobo that is
typified as a "server board", AKA Tyan mobos. The overclockers HAVE to
be more stable in worse situations than the much overpriced and
underperforming "server boards". Anything marketed as a server board is
probably going to be a money pipeline waiting for you to give your
frogskins away to the manufacturer. Synopsis: The overclockers are
better server boards than the server boards.

2) Since they are marketed to hardware hacker types, they are more
loaded with features than other boards. Also, just because you buy an
overclocker board doesn't mean that it's going to overclock the cpu.
You have to TELL it to do that; otherwise it operates the CPU at the
design spec for the CPU. In that case it theoretically is more rock
solid than the other types.

3). The reason I cite directx and opengl benches is simply because
there is no better stress test for the entire mobo and it's subsystems
as a team than these tests. They stress the graphics, memory, and all
other subsystems better than any business apps ever would in a million
years. The business benches are more or less like tits on a boar hog.
But, if you are still curious you can follow the other URL's on Dr Tom's
site to the business benches.

OK. Darn this thing has gotten long...

HTH,

LX

P.S. I probably would have bought the Enmic. And..I was unsure of what
level of information to give, so I used the shotgun.

Re: [expert] ipv4 forwarding disabled again when bringing up eth1

2002-09-29 Thread SainTiss

Hi again,

After some more research, I'm quite sure this line in
/etc/init.d/network is what's causing the problem:

# Run this again to catch any interface-specific actions
sysctl -e -p /etc/sysctl.conf >/dev/null 2>&1

because in /etc/sysctl.conf, ip_forward is set to 0

Now the question remains: what's the point in "enabling ipv4 forwarding"
if the default sysctl.conf will reset it to 0 again? (I haven't modified
sysctl.conf since install)

Thanks

Hans

[expert] ipv4 forwarding disabled again when bringing up eth1

2002-09-29 Thread SainTiss

Hi,

I'm having an odd problem here:

during /sbin/service network restart, ipv4 forwarding is being enabled
as it should be...

just after the "Enabling ipv4 packet forwarding [ OK ]" has
appeared, I did cat /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward and the output was
"1"...

Then after eth0 had been brought up, the output still was "1"...

But then after eth1 had been brought up as well (last action of the
network restart), the output was "0" again...
So something reset the forwarding...

Does anyone recognize this problem?

Does anyone know a solution to it?

Thanks

Hans

A dumb question: Did you check the "Only write dummy" or "Only
Simulate Writing" or any option similar to this?

[expert] problems starting kde

2002-09-29 Thread hans schneidhofer

hi list,
have now an updated kde3 and am having now discovered that after starting my
mdk8.2 box - it is starting automated, I get always the old startsymbol of
kde2 - then starts the kde3, but an old layout as well as in english, not in
german. logout again and login a newone time I get the new kde3-outfit. So -
now my question :
where I have to look for change this behavior and the settings ?
I really doesn't find any old kde2-related rpms.

One thing I have tried, was in mandrake-control-center, looking, which
settings there are, but I also see KDE3, so now I really don't know, where I
can find anymore.

my system uses kernel 2.4.18 and have installed kde 3.0.3 also as mdk-related
rpms.

thanks for helping and bye
