[expert] What does it take to build koffice-1.1beta?
I downloaded the src.rpm for koffice-1.1beta from the cooker directory. I am running Mandrake 8.0. I try to build it and it ALMOST completes but then craps out with: Processing files: koffice-devel-1.1-0.beta1.1mdk Finding Provides: (using /usr/lib/rpm/find-provides)... Finding Requires: (using /usr/lib/rpm/find-requires)... PreReq: rpmlib(PayloadFilesHavePrefix) = 4.0-1 Huh? I the same rpm 4.0-26mdk rpms as Cooker has. None of these files has changed since the release of 8.0 (yet). I must assume that the i586.rpm in the cooker binary directory was therefore built with essentially the same background as my system (except that the i586.rpm is unusable on an 8.0 system unless you install kde 2.2 as well). I am trying to build this for my 8.0 system witn kde 2.1.1. What does the above message really mean? I do believe that rpm-4.0-26mdk is WELL beyond rpm-4.0-1 (the rpmlibs are also similarly beyond 4.0-1). -- Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain.
Re: [expert] StarOffice
I have StarOffice 5.2 and have used it extensively. It is a good package but it is HUGE. It's one fault is simply that it has everything built into it so that when you start staroffice, you aren't simply starting the wordprocessor, but you are also starting the spreadsheet app, the graphics app, the presentation app, etc. I have used it quite a bit mainly because of its compatibilities with Word and other M$ office apps. The one shortcoming it has, in my book, which has since led me to use Lyx as my primary wordprocessor, is no citation/bibliography capability. With Word or Wordperfect (on windoze) you can buy EndNote and write nice research papers complete with citations and automagically generated bibliography pages. StarOffice cannot do this - any citations you make have to be hand-written and organized (a hideous proposition if you are citing many sources). The ONLY wordprocessing app for linux that can do essentially what the combo of Word and EndNote can do in windoze is Lyx with pybliographic or sixpack. It is this one thing that prevents me from using staroffice exclusively. I actually sent Sun a suggestion that they add a bibliography capability to StarOffice, and ultimately they did - sortof. It can handle only the bibliography part, via the builtin database, but it doesn't in any way, shape or form work the way EndNote does with Word or Wordperfect. The bibliographies you might create within the StarOffice suite cannot be used to auto-generate citations and reference pages. Anyway, the suite is good, works well. If you do not need to write papers requiring a lot of citations and reference pages, then it is more than adequate. Otherwise, I would suggest you take the time to learn how to work with Lyx and pybliographic. On Monday 23 April 2001 18:22, Neal Lippman wrote: Any users of StarOffice out there who can comment on it? [expert] Explain this please Mandrake
Why is it that the default window environment in Mandrake is KDE but the mandrake config tools are based on gtk? I cannot do anything with DrakConf because: [root@localhost praedor]# DrakConf.real new_font is not of type Gtk::Gdk::Font at /usr/X11R6/bin/DrakConf.real line 212. A system based by default on qt and kde uses gtk, which is often broken, in my experience on Mandrake, like above. [expert] What's THIS now?!
I just rebuilt a kernel (2.4.3-19mdk) after having built 3 previous kernels (2.4.3-10mdk) without ANY problems. I did: "make xconfig make clean make bzImage make install make modules make modules_install" Same as always. The kernel builds just fine but when it comes to installing, the process craps out with an error that a bootloader could not be found (!?). OF COURSE a bootloader is installed, nothing has changed here. Lilo is installed and it is installed in the MBR or /dev/hda. The app, detectloader cannot see it and this is killing the installation of the kernel. If I run detectloader manually, it says it cannot detect a bootloader in the MBR. What. The. Fu*k!? I then ran lilo just to be sure, and, yep, it installs. It has also been working fine up to this point. Lilo IS installed. It IS in the MBR of /dev/hda. It WAS detected just fine by all my previous kernel build processes. I have not rebooted since the last one, and the system booted up just fine in any case VIA LILO. How, in linux (not in DOS or windoze) do I wipe the MBR and then reinstall lilo? What is the problem here? -- Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain.
[expert] Almost home - resolution is too high
OK, it looks like I have finally gotten DRI working. The problem is the default X resolution is too high. I would like to set it lower, to 1024x768, but if I use any of the tools supplied by Mandrake to do this, it screws everything up and sets the system up to use the original XFree86 instead of the DRI stuff. I looked through XF86Config and XF86Config-4 and see nothing obvious that I could edit to change the default resolution. What file, and where, is in charge of XFree resolution? -- Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain.

Unfortunately, I had to elect to reinstall everything. I am now in the process of downloading a bunch of src rpms to bring back kde 2.1.1, kernel-2.4.3, XFree86-4.0.3, and several other things. Gah! I am going crazy with the multitude of problems that apparently exist in Mandrake Cooker right now (I KNOW it is beta but until now I have NEVER had so many problems with Cooker stuff). Among the MANY problems: drakx software doesn't work. Period. I open up DrakConf and try to do ANYTHING with hardware, XFree, and DrakConf refuses to work. Re: [expert] So...what is the verdict on KDE 2.1.1
Well, I have 2.1 and aa fonts but the problem is that adobe fonts are royally screwed in rendering. Windows fonts, and any fonts except Adobe MM fonts are real nice. The ONLY fixed font available/allowed is an adobe font which doesn't display well at all. Like all adobe fonts under QT 2.3.0 aa, the fonts shift upwards, screwing up alignment in any browser window that includes any fixed fonts mixed with other fonts. It also makes things like web searches a pain because the text entered in the query window, say in Google, is displaced upward and partially covered/hidden by the upper limit of the text entry box. If 2.1.1 somehow fixes this problem then that alone would be enough to get me to upgrade. There are some sites I frequent that require javascript work to make the website useful and konqueror just wont do it (my M$ outlook email interface at work is one such page that doesn't work well in konqueror). There are other sites that use flash and such that konqueror can't deal with even when the netscape flash plugin is available. For some sites, konqueror is not an option and only netscape can handle them. Don't know about Opera but then, I suppose it doesn't do netscape plugins which would rule it out for many sites. Re: [expert] Netscape Locking Up
One website that konqueror (at least on my system - Mandrake 8.0) can't handle is the DRI website. What happens: First off, the page is misrendered in text if I select any of the links to other DRI pages (the main page is OK). The problem is parts of the text overwrite each other so as to be unreadable. If I then go up to the View menu, then down to "set encoding" and select either of the Arabic encodings, which works on the MANY other web pages that are similarly misrendered, instead of fixing the page I am on, it dumps me back to the main DRI page. So, I can either browse the documentation, etc, pages at the DRI website and try to read around the misrendered, dicked up text OR I can start netscape and view the pages without any problems at all. Konqueror encoding defaults to "auto" and it is dicked up in KDE 2.1. I don't know about 2.1.1 but with the problems that version appears to have I am not going to try it and will wait for 2.1.2. Here is the link to the Direct Rendering page: http://dri.sourceforge.net For an example of the problem select the Documentation link, then choose either the User Guide link or the DRI Compilation Guide link. Re: [expert] Netscape Locking Up
Actually, now that I think about it, the problem may well lie with the fact that I have font antialiasing enabled with qt-2.3.0 in KDE. It works well for most things but some fonts are totally screwed. As for the DRI site...the package is NICE. I have an ATI Radeon 32 DDR video card that I just installed with DRI in mind. Now that I have hardware OpenGL 3d acceleration enabled, graphics and games go VERY well. Running the Mesa toy app "gears" from an xterm gives me an average framerate of 880. With nothing else running, I have seen 1000 FPS. Fullscreen I get 160 fps. Before, without hardware accel, I would get around 100 fps in default screen size and only about 23 fps fullscreen. The games Heretic2 and Terminus look and run great. DRI was well worth the minor effort it took to download and build (also had to rebuild my kernel to make it all play together). If you have a decent video card with 3d accel capability other than an Nvidia, I highly recommend the DRI code. My /dev/hda primary partition, like many of you no doubt, is vfat with windoze on it. I have found that if I build a kernel (2.4.x) without including fat and vfat IN the kernel, then I get the "kernel panic, cannot mount root fs" message. You can save files as latex from lyx (do not use klyx, it is major broken and no longer in development). Also, the output of lyx is text as well. Try it. Save a lyx file and then open it in a text editor. Beyond that, I know of no WYSIWYG editor for latex. I am running KDE 2.1 with cups-1.1.6, kups-1.1-4mdk, qtcups-2.1-7mdk. I have an Epson Color Stylus 600. I can startup and testprint from kups as superuser/root but if I try this as a user, kups freezes up and bogs down my whole system - kpm indicates in the neighborhood of 99% CPU usage. This goes on indefinitely. It also shows a process, "lpr -lpd" also consuming 99% of my CPU (of course, two apps cannot be both using 99% of my CPU). The only way to unfreeze kups is to kill the "lpr -lpd" process. If I try to print from any kde app (konqueror, kmail), the app will freeze up and slow my system down in the same way that kups does. In no case is a printout EVER produced. Also, the print job never show up in the printer queue. [expert] Any way to fix KEdit and kwrite with aa?
Since going with qt 2.3.0 and antialiasing, I have had to quit using both kedit and kwrite. I have also lost the ability to view text files in konqueror. With the editors, if I type the text is invisable and starts out too high in the window so that it is actually partially underneath the menu bar. Hitting return puts the cursor on a new line barely a millimeter or two below the previous. Trying to view any text file via the konqueror file browser produces gibberish dots in place of text. I now can only use gedit or emacs/xemacs for editing since the native kde 2.1 editors are no longer functional. I had hoped that the latest updates to kde would do something about this but upgrading hasn't fixed anything. I have downloaded the truetype fonts and the XftConfig file, and I have even added an .xftconfig file to my HOME$ with an added entry that I had hoped would fix the font display problem in kde editors and konqueror - by setting it up so that any Adobe font isn't antialiased. Didn't work. Is there ANY fix for kde and antialiasing that makes kde editors actually useful?

I also have the game "Terminus" which is supposed to support ATI video cards in linux including the Radeon. When I start it, it uses software opengl rendering. If I use the Mesa demos, they are all software rendered too (shouldn't they BE ABLE to use hardware?). I guess I need to know , 1) how do I confirm whether or not DRI is enabled in XFree? [expert] AA fonts and kedit or kwrite or txt files
I am generally pleased with the antialiasing from qt2.3.0 in kde2.1 but I am having problems with kedit and kwrite that appears associated. The problem is that the actual text in the app window is shifted upward beyond the menu bar at the top (the cursor resides partially under the menu bar) and the text is also invisable. I can type and type and the cursor moves but nothing appears - this is in both kedit and kwrite. Now for text files. If I use konqueror to browse my home directory and select a text file, it opens it up in the internal konqueror viewer but the text is totally dicked. Instead of text, the page renders as a bunch of almost random dots or speckles. Totally unreadable. If I open up gedit, it is fine and the text file is fine so this is restricted to qt and kde. I already did the "fix" suggested in the cooker list, downloading the truetype font gz file and the XftConfig file. This allows me to properly select arial, etc, fonts, which work very well for everything except kedit and kwrite and the internal konqueror text viewer. One font that is impossible to select is fixed font. It stubbornly remains Adobe Sans serif MM which is royally screwed. If I knew specifically what particular font this was amongst those loaded on my system, I would delete it outright. It is utterly useless and hideously mis-rendered. Has anyone upgraded to qt 2.3.0 and managed to retain kedit and kwrite useability? How about being able to view text files via konqueror? I just ordered an ATI Radeon AGP 32MB DDR based on the fact that XFree86-4.0.2 now contains support for this card. I paid $114 for this card, which is a pretty damn good card, based on the graphics benchmarks I've looked at (no one beats newer Nvidia cards but then, they are more expensive too). I moderated my desire for a new, excellent graphics card vs price and driver support and went the way I did. An older but excellent Matrox G400 was a close second choice for me. [expert] Problem with konqueror user agent, kde 2.1 final
I am having a problem with the user agent for konqueror in kde 2.1 final. If I am doing something wrong I would appreciate a notice to that effect. I find that the user agent doesn't work for me at all. I go to the user agent page in Control Center or from the settings menu item in konqueror and no matter what I do, I am unable to add anything to the window. The "Add" button never activates. I enter a URL and the user agent I desire for that page and all that I am given is the option to push the "Reset" button. Nothing I do will actually take. How do I get user agent working again? Re: [expert] PC - to - Phone
I was involved in the original discussion on this topic. Dialpad doesn't work as is because it pointlessly queries the user system to make sure it is running windows. If it is not running windows, an error message is presented (even though it is strictly java - and not a perverse M$ java). As for freewebphone, it is not a PC to phone app. It appears to be a strictly web-phone package - a glorified IRC or instant messaging system that can connect pc to pc but not pc to phone. [expert] Voodoo2 no longer usable with modern linux?
Until recently, I have been quite happy with my obsolete but perfectly useable voodoo2 card. Since upgrading to a 2.4.x kernel and XFree86-4.0.x, however, I find that I cannot use the card. I have the 3dfx device driver source and have built it with my updated system but it doesn't work - the char-major-107 doesn't exist anymore. Looking for updated drivers, there are none. Does anyone know how to make a voodoo2 work with 2.4.x and XFree86-4.0.x? The tdfx driver in the kernel source is not for the voodoo2. I made the mistake of loading that module and then running "test3Dfx" and it totally locked up my system. I had to hard reboot to get my system back. I must say, as a side note, that I always select the Magic key during kernel xconfig but I have yet to find a situation that wrecked a running linux (like the voodoo test mentioned above) or various other things I have done with sound, in which that key combo is of any use. I have had to hard reboot 6 times this evening because of some bizarro sound problem or the 3dfx problem. -- Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain.

Re: [expert] Removing Xwindows
It is not a good idea to just delete directories. Your RPM database will still think all of that stuff is installed. Startup and login to the command line (Runlevel 4? Or is it 3? You could also do a Ctrl-Alt-F2 and login there and do the the rest of this from there. Not sure what happens when you do a Ctrl-Alt-F7 to get back to your original X session...). From there, do "rpm -qa |grep XFree". You will get a list of every XFree rpm installed. Do an "rpm -e XFree rpm name" for each entry. You will most likely need to use the --nodeps switch too. Anything that depends on XFree will be listed as dependent if you try to remove XFree without the --nodeps switch. [expert] KDE 2.1 final...nice, RPM-4.0?
Last night I finally completed the compilation and installation of kde2.1-1mdk src rpms. So far, all is working superbly. Very nice. One minor detail...when one right-clicks on the panel and gets the little menu which has one entry for "Settings". Selecting this item (with the intent of changing panel settings) does nothing still. It did nothing with the beta and does nothing now. Does anyone have an install in which the "Settings" entry in the panel menu actually works? If you do, then it would indicate a potential MINOR problem somewhere in my build. It does work OK if I get the the panel settings via Control Center. I still have a question beyond that. Coincident with building the kde2.1 src.rpms, I also upgraded to glibc2.2 (gasp!), and all is well with it too. The problem I am having is in regards to RPM 4.0. I am not impressed with Redhat's wisdom in producing a new RPM version that is, apparently, completely incompatible with the previous version. RPM 4.0 does not recognize RPM 3.0.5's RPM database so if you install 4.0, you totally lose any information regarding what RPMs are actually installed (It would have been nice if Redhat had made 4.0 capable of simply importing the 3.x database so there could be SOME continuity between versions). Is there a means to get 4.0 to recognize/accept the 3.x database so I don't get dependency problems with EVERY RPM I now try to install? XFree is installed, of course, but just about any RPM I try to install now complains about missing dependencies regarding a host of XFree libs. I use the "--nodeps" switch and all is well but this really sucks. It is only a matter of time before I use the --nodeps switch on something for which I truly do lack the appropriate installed RPMs and I wont have a clue because it will be hidden amongst the long list of "missing" dependencies which really aren't missing. Anyone? Please? -- Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain.

Question...did someone not too long ago indicate how one can upgrade to rpm-4.0? I installed it and now it doesn't recognize any of the rpms that I have already installed from rpm-3.0.5. I am having to install practically everything I build now with the --nodeps switch because rpm-4.0 doesn't recognize the fact that XFree86 rpms and various other rpms really are already installed. Re: [expert] Kmail won't open an URL
You aren't looking for something specific to kmail. You are changing a setting specific to web pages (htm, html, etc) which is the important part. On the first page of the File browsing setup page, go to text and then to html. On the first page, lower portion is a big window which contains, probably, "Quanta". You want to select the add button and TYPE IN konqueror (do not select it from a list - actually type in konqueror and hit enter). It will now appear below Quanta. Select konqueror and then the "Move Up" button to place it above Quanta. Now hit "Apply". From this point onward, your links in kmail to websites should work properly. This last was the main thing I was fighting with all this for. As for the module, does it compile for you with the 2.4.x kernel? I haven't looked at the source for the module except to make sure it pointed to the correct location for my kernel source. You build it and then need to manually copy/move it to the correct module directory in /lib/modules/2.4.x/. I placed mine (2.2.17 kernel) in the same location that my appletalk.o module resides. I suppose with the 2.4.x kernel I would try the same place. To load the module, I just do "insmod afpfs" and it works. To fix it, after EVERY bootup and login, I have to delete the wierd "p^%" directory and then copy all the contents of /usr/share/applnk/ to my .kde/share/applnk/ directory and then run kbuildsycoca. All this is only a temp fix since the next time I bootup and login, I will have to do it all over again. Re: [expert] Offtopic (a bit): Me thinks I am a sucker - net 2 phone redux
Well, the codec is supported in the card (those that are not propriatory/closed/require licensing) but then, net2phone and dialpad take care of that for you. You use their software app and make your calls, they take care of everything else on their end. With these cards, they can handle the codecs locally but they STILL require an IP-to-PSTN gateway be located somewhere. Again, net2phone and dialpad provide this for their users but having one of these cards does not mean you can use their gateways, or anyone else's for that matter. There are none, really, that a linux user could make use of. It may well be the case that there are projects along this line here or there, but that is the same as saying fusion power is being worked on. ONE day it may get here, but don't hold your breath. The advertising on the Quicknet website is misleading, and I guess I wanted to warn people of this. You cannot get one of their cards and make PC-to-phone calls inspite of what their page says. It is THEORETICALLY possible but in practice it just cannot be done because the other services required to make this work do not exist. What you CAN do is make PC-to-PC calls (big deal). You are merely doing a audible instant messaging in this case. Anyway, if a hacked app were produced that would work ala net2phone or dialpad's broken java app with their respective services, you get the PC-to-phone capability, do not need to spend money on a very specialized card and can just make use of any decent, modern soundcard, and make longdistance calls over the internet. I was rather hoping that someone HERE would prove me wrong in my critique of the Quicknet hardware and tell me that you CAN set it up, not theoretically but REALLY, to make PC-to-phonecalls. See, I am also a member of the quicknet linux-drivers mailing list. These people are great to help you get your card driver downloaded and compiled, but big deal, you have a driver...what do you do now? Well, I asked about gateways and setting the card/config files up for using them. No answer. THEY know of no real, extant way to do this now. Not a single soul provided any information about any gateway anywhere that could be used. The best I got was a suggestion to read the openh323 pages because this person thought they saw something there about projects along this line. Well I DID read the pages and if you follow an octopus of links hither and yon, you will read all about the potential use of internet telephony, may even get links to net2phone and dialpad and the like, but not a single link on gateways that can be used with linux, sans propriatory software, with your shiny new pricey Quicknet card. [expert] Suggestion for konqueror
I would like to suggest that konqueror be modified so that when one clicks on the "Open location" menu item, the dialog box that comes up NOT contain the present address. After doing this, I now have all the services in KDM again and cannot recall how to eliminate them. Anyone? -- Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain.
[expert] 3Com cards and network problems
I have been having this problem for a long time but it seems worse now that I have recently built a new 2.4.1 kernel and started using it. I have a 3Com 900B netcard. With earlier Mandrake releases, my system insisted on using 3c59x and this seemed to work. I am now using 3c90x because 3c59x no longer works, but even 3c90x barely works. The problem before and now is that during bootup, when it gets to initializing eth0 using dhcpcd, there is an innordinant delay of something like 45 seconds to a minute or so followed, usually (now) with a [Failed] and then a continuation of the bootup process. That is with my present 2.4.1 kernel. Previously, with a 2.2.17-21mdk kernel, the delay was there but it usually ended with success, but the delay is unacceptable. I have tried, with both 2.2.17 and 2.4.x kernels, to compile the 3c59x driver into the kernel or build it as a module. I have done the same thing with the 3c90x driver. In neither case does it work as it should. If I build it into the kernel, instead of a long delay, it is and INSTANTANEOUS failure, regardless of which driver I try. As a module, it takes forever for dhcpcd to fail and bootup to continue. After bootup, I end up having to manually run "ifup eth0" multiple times, and each time I need to immediately begin doing something like browse the web or download mail or ping a target in order to help dhcpcd succeed. If I do NOT do one or more of these things, dhcp (or pump) invariably fails to assign an IP address. Before it ends with [Failed] and while I am waiting, I have full network connectivity. Only upon the appearance of [Failed] do I lose it. In general it takes me about 3 tries for dhcpcp to be successful in assigning an IP address. What is up with this? I had thought that 3com cards were among THE most well supported cards in the linux world. With my problems (the card is fine and it is ONLY a linux problem since if I boot up to windoze, there is no problem at all) and the others that appear in this list from others, I am beginning to think that the 3com card is a DAWG and best placed in the trash. What is the deal here? How do I fix this? What settings for the card could I try (and how)? -- Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain.
[expert] Offtopic (a bit): Me thinks I am a sucker - net 2 phone redux
Well, I think I was suckered. After starting the conversation on the list about internet telephony, hoping to find some software that would allow linux users to make PC to phone calls like windoze users with dialpad or net2phone, I heard about Quicknet and their telephony cards. Their website advertises the stuff as great for PC-to-PC, PC-to-phone, and phone-to-PC calls. Not true. In THEORY, apparently, the cards could be used for this stuff if you are running linux, but in reality one cannot. Why? There are no IP-to-phone gateways available that a linux-user could use. I imagine a windoze user would have no problems but not a linux user. I got stupid and spent money I would otherwise used to buy a good video card and instead bought a PhoneCARD for my laptop. I had imagined that it with it I would be able to make phonecalls to my wife, parents, friends, etc, regardless of where I was (I am a military reservist). Not so. It is EASY to make PC-to-PC calls (if you can get the ALPHA-level linux driver to compile), so long as the target computer has a device or software listening for such things. To me this is merely glorified Instant Messaging or IRC, neither of which I have any interest or use for. I wanted to CALL people from my PC to their PHONE, not their frickin' PC. Hell, my parents, friend's, etc, have dialup accounts (if they have computers at all) and their computers aren't on but a few hours a day. Their phone is ALWAYS ready to work. Thus, it appears that I wasted good money on a gimmicky toy. A glorified IM device that would have been better spent on an NVIDIA graphics card. Thus to the real point...this reinforces the need for an app that will work with net2phone or dialpad servers and allow PC-to-phone calls. These services are WINDOZE-ONLY, for no good reason, with dialpad being the WORST offender since they used an open, platform-independent language (JAVA) and planted a check within it that refuses to work if you are using ANYTHING but a win32 system of some kind. What bullcrap! It's frickin' JAVA, damnit! That kind of restriction is unnecessary, gratuitous, and stupid. Quicknet hardware are all very specialized bits of equipment with no real benefit over of decent soundcard which most people already own if they own a computer. The equipment are merely glorified modem/soundcards, the soundcard part being very primitive and low quality vs say, a Sounblaster Live card. Its only real purpose is to allow netmeetings or other PC-to-PC communications, which might be fine for a group of businesspeople, but for Joe and Jane Blow, its useless and extravagant. A decent soundcard that has full duplex capability will serve better than a Quicknet card - and provide music, soundf/x, etc, on top of that. I just want to finish with strong encouragement to the coders among you to hack a software package that will permit normal users to make use of the perfectly fine service that is already available to windoze users (NOT for linux users OR Mac users) provided by net2phone and/or dialpad. We already have the guts of the dialpad applet and hopefully soon a linux-friendly applet will appear. Perhaps someone could reverse engineer the net2phone app and do linux and Mac users a favor and release a client app that will permit them to use the net2phone service as well. In the meantime, I will be returning my PhoneCARD and getting a proper piece of hardware: a good video card. Unless you are REALLY into internet chat, instant messaging, and get a thrill talking into your PC to someone on their PC, then do not spend money on Quicknet cards. Incidently, I did finally manage to get their driver to build but it took me a while to point out the errors in their instructions at various levels, and their sourcecode, before it was buildable on a Mandrake system. You have to jump through a lot of flaming hoops to get the cards to work, and then the end is not really worth the journey. -- Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain.
[expert] /usr wont unmount during shutdown
Recently, whenever I shutdown my laptop I get to the point where everything is being unmounted when it craps out with an error about /usr being busy and being unable to unmount it. Ultimately, I end up having to just hit the power switch because nothing else I do (not even logging in another session as root and trying to unmount it manually) will unmount it. As a result, every time I start it up again, it has to do the harddrive check which slows down bootup a lot. What the hell is the problem? Any ideas? I don't know if this was the fix, but I tried again, this time just doing it for 5x86,6x86. I also built and installed the new modutils-2.4 from cooker (I am building it all so it will work with my glibc2.1 - I'm not touching glibc2.2 for a LOOONG time, it will wreck everything and I don't want to deal with it yet). [expert] kernel-2.4.1-*mdk doesn't like Athlon?
After 6 attempts, combined, building the kernel-source-2.4.1-8mdk and then 2.4.1-9mdk, I keep running into the same problem. It builds fine, it installs fine, it boots fine, but I am unable to use my net card and my parallel port zip drive, both of which work perfectly under 2.2.17-21mdk. I have an Athlon so I have been building the kernels for an Athlon/K7. I am beginning to wonder if there is a problem in the optimization code for this processor. When I try to load my 3com card's module (3c59x.o), I get this string of error messages: /lib/modules/2.4.1-9mdk/kernel/drivers/net/3c59x.o: unresolved symbol _mmx_memcpy /lib/modules/2.4.1-9mdk/kernel/drivers/net/3c59x.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.1-9mdk/kernel/drivers/net/3c59x.o failed /lib/modules/2.4.1-9mdk/kernel/drivers/net/3c59x.o: insmod 3c59x failed When I try to load the ppa module for my zip drive, I get: /lib/modules/2.4.1-9mdk/kernel/drivers/scsi/scsi_mod.o: unresolved symbol _mmx_memcpy /lib/modules/2.4.1-9mdk/kernel/drivers/scsi/scsi_mod.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.1-9mdk/kernel/drivers/scsi/scsi_mod.o failed /lib/modules/2.4.1-9mdk/kernel/drivers/scsi/scsi_mod.o: insmod ppa failed In both cases, the first of the errors is regarding mmx_memcpy. This is making me think that the problem may be in the CPU-specific optimization code. Can anyone offer another idea? A way to get these things working? If I run depmod -a after bootup with the 2.4.1 kernel, I get a LOT of errors, but fortunately most of the modules listed are irrelevant to me right now. -- Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain.
Re: [expert] kernel-2.4.1-*mdk doesn't like Athlon?
Hmpf. Replying to my own message with a correction. I redid my kernel, this time with just 5x86, 6x86 as the architecture. At the end of it all, the 3c59x module and the ppa module still refused to work, as below. I then tried something else for the hell of it. I did a "modprobe 3c90x" and it installed. I then did an "ifup eth0" and viola! Network connectivity! My card is a 3c900B card but up to this moment, I have had to use the 3c59x module because 3c90x didn't work. Now things appear reversed. So that problem is resolved and had nothing to do with Athlon vs i386 CPU architecture. I still can't use my parallel zip drive. Anyone have a fix/answer for that? [expert] kernel 2.4.1 and 3com 900
Well... I have run into a problem with kernel 2.4.1 and my own 3com 900B card. With my present 2.2.17-21mdk kernel, it works, after a fashion (it takes FOREVER for the card to get assigned an IP address during bootup via either pump or dhcpcd). I downloaded and built the mandrake cooker 2.4.1-9mdk kernel source and all went very well. It built, I installed it, I booted it up. No problems with that except no sound and, more critically, my 3com card doesn't work. In this case, instead of a module I went with building it into the kernel. Upon bootup, I see that it is recognized and given an irq, but when dhcpcd comes up to assign an IP, it immediately fails and bootup continues. I supposed this is an improvement of sorts, having such a rapid bootup, but at the cost of no network connectivity. If I run "ifup eth0" as root after bootup, it immediately fails too. In the past, when I've built kernels and compiled the 900 driver into the kernel, I had no problems (various 2.2.x kernels). Anyone have any ideas? It isn't ideal, my present situation with my 3c900 and a 2.2.17 kernel, since it takes forever to get an IP but it works. Why the problem with 2.4.1? -- Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain.
Re: [expert] Cooker kernel-2.4.1-8mdk...anyone?
Nothing but problems for me so far. I downloaded the 2.4.1-9mdk kernel and built that. It built fine, installed fine, etc. I can even boot it up but my ethernet card doesn't work with it, even when I compile the driver into the kernel (3c900 card). During bootup, there is a message indicating that it is being assigned an IRQ, what it is, whole frame transfers, etc. What doesn't happen is getting an IP address. After bootup, if I run "ifup eth0" it immediately says [Failed] without the slightest hesitation. I also build the ppa module for my zip drive. With the 2.2.17 kernel, it is fine and mounts but it simply doesn't recognize the zip drive with the 2.4.1 kernel. I get error messages concerning /dev/sda4. Did the dev naming convention for the parallel port zip drive change with the new kernel? Is it no longer /dev/sda4? I am now attempting my 4th build of the 2.4.1-9mdk kernel source. The last one, unlike all the others, functioned as if it was on a system with 8 megs of RAM instead of 128 MB. INCREDIBLY slow - all the other builds I've tried have booted and run VERY quickly. [expert] Is there something wrong with this sequence?
I am now trying my 5th compile of kernel-2.4.1-9mdk source. I have been able to boot fine but cannot use my 3c900 card, even with the driver compiled into the kernel (I am back to modular now). I simply do this: 1. make xconfig 2. make dep 3. make clean 4. nohup make bzImage 5. make modules 6. make modules_install 7. make install I have also tried the above but replacing #7 with "cp bzImage /boot/linux-2.4.1-9mdk" Same results. I edit my lilo.conf, run lilo, and boot the new kernel. No ethernet function, even with the damn driver builtin. I once did an "ifconfig eth0 up" and that got the card recognized so that when I ran just "ifconfig" it showed up, mac address and all. But running "ifup eth0" failed immediately. I don't get it. -- Against stupidity, the gods themselves contend in vain.

[expert] Embarrassingly basic question
OK, I am tired of my computers being each named localhost.localdomain with the alias of localhost. I have tried, in the past, to change the alias to something I like but this has been all but useless since it doesn't change anything, like the KDM system name or how the name appears on the network. Is there some special rules to follow in renaming one's computer? Can one who has a dynamic ip name their computer in such a way to be friendly with the appropriate network? My desktop is always connected to uswest via my DSL line. I once even tried naming the computer somename.uswest.net. This was disliked. I have even tried changing the alias, which does little...when I login, I get localhost.localdomain and the alias is nowhere to be seen. My laptop gets connected to both my uswest ISP when it is at home or to my university network when at work. Re: [expert] 3com cards and 7.2
I too have the 3c905C. My problem is not that it doesn't work, it does (after a fashion). The problem I have is that during bootup, when dhcpcd sets out to acquire an IP for my computer, it takes FOREVER. It eventually gets around to it and bootup continues and my connection is fine (and the proper module is loaded for the card). This didn't happen after the inital 7.2 install - getting an IP during bootup happened almost immediately. Later, I built my own kernels, as I am wont to do, and I select the proper 3c90x vortex/boomerang module during xconfig. This is apparently repeatable - after the initial install (which I have done multiple times in the past due to occasionally REALLY screwing my system up and finding it easier just to reinstall and go from there) all is well and I get an IP address almost immediately. After building a kernel, however, even if I do not end up using it, appears to dick it up so that during the bootup, even though the module is identical, SLOW IP acquisition. I am not using the kernels I have built myself right now and am back to the 2.2.17-21mdk kernel (and ITS modules), but the situation remains. How can I fix this? What settings for the card might I mess with to get things rolling so that getting an IP is almost immediate. The only thing I an think that could be different is some card/network setting is slightly altered from the default when a new kernel is built and installed. Here is the output of 'chkfontpath': Current directories in font path: 1: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc:unscaled 2: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi:unscaled 3: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi:unscaled 4: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1 5: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/msttfonts 6: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo 7: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/mdk 8: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/drakfont 9: /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/pcf_drakfont:unscaled 10: /usr/share/fonts/default/Type1 11: /usr/share/fonts/ttf/western 12: /usr/share/fonts/ttf/decoratives As far as I can tell using drakfont, there is NOTHING wrong with my fonts. NOTHING I TELL YOU! What do I need to do to make #$!@!!!#$)*!@ X work with the perfectly fine fonts on my system? What is it about running any windoze app in wine that wrecks the train?
Re: [expert] quick security question.
One thing about nmap... depending on the scan type, it will show you a port number, protocol, it's state and then give a name for a common service that uses that port. It doesn't mean that the port is actually making use of that port. So, if nmap gets a response during it's scan from port 31337, then it will provide you with the above information and provide a name for some service that COULD use that port. It doesn't mean that it IS using that port. I did a scan of my local school network last year with nmap. On just about every windoze box it detected, it indicated port "31337/tcp open Backorifice". I notified the school IT guys and they looked into it and I also asked Fyoder (the maintainer/creator of nmap) about it. He indicates essentially what I said. If a port gives some sort of nmap-understandable reply, then nmap will identify the port and give you the name of a service that may use that port. If I have port 21 open on my system, even if I am NOT running an ftp server, and scan it with nmap, it will list "ftp" as the service associated with that port. In any case, it is EXTREMELY unlikely that someone would have hacked into your friend's system so soon after an install and setup. The attacker would first need reconnoiter the system and then, perhaps, run a few apps/scripts (a script kiddie activity) that exploit commonly known vulnerabilities. Once in, the kiddie then uploads some files, etc. This takes at least SOME time. What sort of connection does this system use? DHCP on DSL? Static IP on DSL? Phone? Connected via a LAN? Re: [expert] quick security question.
It is not any problem being sure. Having a cable modem connection does make you more vulnerable than, perhaps, using a DSL. Does he have a dynamic IP or static? How long WAS the system up before the firewall was built? Remember, you may not actually be running any service on that port, and your firewall is filtering the port, as indicated by nmap. Even if you are not running any service on a given port detected by nmap, nmap will simply provide a name of a service that commonly uses that port. That initially confused me when I first began using nmap. I thought if it said "Backorifice" on port 31337, that meant that Backorifice was installed and running on that port. That is not what it meant. It meant that port 31337 was often used by Backorifice. Having detected that port with nmap, I could then run a program (backorifice, for instance) and see if that port was listening and active. In the case where nmap showed all the windoze boxes with Backorifice on port 31337, not a one of them had it actually installed and running (it is more than just a hacker tool, it can be used as a remote administration tool like PCAnywhere, only it is free). It is merely a heads up/give you information kind of thing that nmap does. Re: [expert] Network address request
Offhand I do not know the ping command for that but it is trivial with nmap. You could run "nmap -sP 230.100.133.0-255" for instance, to do a ping scan of the entire 230.100.133.X class C (?) network. The output is a list of all the detected systems, mostly as simple IP addresses in my local case, with a few system names for those computers with static IPs and netbios names. Since nmap uses ping in this case, there is obviously a command string that will do it from ping itself. Anyone? Re: [expert] A quicknet linejack price
I am considering it however, it is merely on my list. At the top of that list is a new videocard. I wouldn't mind using CPU cycles for this rather than a dedicated card, at least for a while. I do not make that many longdistance calls. I do travel some and it would be nice to always be nothing more than a local call away from my wife or other family members. Thus, if I wanted to really use the card for my purposes, I would need a pcmcia version for my laptop AND the pci card for my desktop. Thus, I prefer a cheap and transportable solution (software solution). Re: [expert] My last word on Linux Telephony
I built it all last night on my celeron 333 laptop with 96MB ram. It did take a while but it wasn't bad and it did all build without incident. The damn libs are huge, however. Space was already a premium and moving the libs to /usr/local/lib/pwlib consumed all my remaining hdd space (except for a paltry 60 k). If you happen to know...after building, how much of pwlib and gatekeeper can you delete? With gatekeeper, I assume I could dump everything except the binary. With pwlib, I assume everything except the lib/ and, maybe, the include/? I only dismiss it, not for its POTENTIAL, but for its practice. PC-to-PC is what it is geared for, sans special equipment. Those I would call do not sit at their computers 24 hrs/day and they do not run their computers 24 hrs/day. The phone is the best option and for that, thus far, one requires special addon equipment, regardless of what openh323 software one uses. It would be nice to see a non-hardware based answer. It would not be optimal but it would be cheaper and easier for many people. On Monday 05 February 2001 16:59, Tricia C. Sesar wrote: This seems to be a hot topic tonight.
