Pismo Power Jack

2006-02-15 Thread Frank Cornew
I'm about to dig into my Pismo to resolder the power jack to the
sound card. If I can locate a new style power jack, would the pismo
work with the new powerbook power bricks?

I'm using two of the original saucer 45 watt/24v/1.875 supplies and
have had to repair them multiple times. Have had to crack one open
and rebuild the plug on another one.

Have access to the new style power supplies, and believe there was an
adapter made so that old saucers would work with the new computers.

Re: Battery Time Left

2006-01-15 Thread Frank Cornew

Dan Van:

Me too...Pismo with Newertech high cap battery. Tiger upgrade, not
clean install. Many full cycles on battery, PRAM reset, power mgr
reset, utilities, Macaroni type maintenance, full sotware updates.
Thought it had to do either with the battery not being from apple or
that the Tiger upgrade was not a clean install?

Nonetheless, think I've seen the same in some Tiger upgraded TiBooks
with their original batteries, and no third part utilities.

Anyone see this with claen installs? or a fix?

F. (not Fran)

Dan -

I have suffered this exact issue on my Pismo. Haven't figured out how
to fix it either - my next stop? Start from scratch. Also - I
believe my battery doesn't last as long under Tiger.. but that is just
a sense.

Please let me know if you remedy this - I'd be very interested to
learn what you find out.

thanks and good luck!

I can get the info in percentage, but if I ask for it to be shown as

which program I use to measure it. I have show battery status in the
menu bar checked in the Energy Saver Systems Preference. I also use
SlimBatteryMonitor. Both show the same percentage, but no longer the
 time.

As best I remember this was working up till just a week or so ago.

 I have a 400MHz Pismo, 40G, 768MB. I recently upgraded to Tiger and
then 10.4.3. Could have been the same time. Battery is fairly new. I
was getting about 4 hours or so last I remember seeing the time. Is
 this a Tiger issue?

I tried running just on battery till it went to sleep (about 1-2 %),
then charging to full. Did this twice, still no joy so I tried reset-
nvram, reset-all. Still nothing but %.

Seems like its probably just something simple, but no luck with
Google or searching the Apple site.

 Any Suggestions?

Tiger via appleshare 383 to OS 7.6

2005-12-17 Thread Frank Cornew
Have managed to link my Pismo running tiger via appletalk over
airport to ethernet to an upgraded (040, ethernet) LC running OS
7.6.1. In order to obtain some semblance of understanding between
them on the network I installed the appleshare 3.8.3 client on the LC
and can access the Pismo from the LC. I cannot access the LC from the
pismo due to incompatible afp version. The name of the Pismo shows up
occasionally in the LC's chooser, but when it doesn't, I can access
it by entering the Pismo's IP address.

Any thoughts on how to improve this setup. It might be a bit more
stable - it seems to choke during large file transfers, say greater
than a gig, and would be nice to access from the Pismo.

Ebay like many companies on line is PC anal and they are big enough
that they don't care if other platform users are having issues with
their site. I find Safari to be much slower on ebay than Firefox and
the last version of Explorer for the Mac to be almost unusable on
ebay.
Tom

Question re best browser to use to save ebay pages with text and picture:
I have found that the last version of Explorer for the Mac is the
only browser that allows me to quickly download an ebay page, with
pictures, all in one file. To check the progress of the auction I
just double click the downloaded page, click on 'Connect' and check
progress.
Are there other browsers that will save the text and picture as one
file, as Explorer for the Mac 5.23 does?
Thanks.

iCab will to this very elegantly. You can also print to pdf from any
browser if all you want is a copy - but then edited in Acrobat
(commercial)

Pismo DVD formats

2005-11-26 Thread Frank Cornew

Tony:

Am using a GoVideo VR3930 precisely for this. Probably not available
any more, but newer models should be good.

Extremely happy with the unit.

It has a firewire (aka iLink or IEEE 1392?) interface, so I can copy
directly from my sony camcorder, and the VR3930 controls the camera.

I haven't attempted to hook up directly to the Pismo.
Uses DVD-R and DVD-RW, think that the mac line currently uses DVD+R,
shouldn't be an issue with finished disks. Just means that you will
need stocks of different media if you get a more current mac. They
play in my Pismo, but my Pismo drive is a bit flaky so I occasionally
get dirty disk aborts. (further comment, listies?). Am about to
replace the (matsushita) drive in the Pismo EB with a burner soon.

Reviews mentioned quality issues with GoVideo units. Believe they
were directed at a previous model, and this one was put on the market
in early 2004. At any rate, I had an opportunity to buy this one at
Costco at a very good price, and I haven't regretted it.

I am finishing up transcribing 350 VHS tapes to DVD and will then
proceed to attack a stack of mini DV tapes. Some tapes play better
out of a panasonic deck that seems to be more tolerant of tracking
issues than the one

One feature I really like about this thing is the ability to
automatically skip all the ads on a commercial DVD and go directly to
the movie. Very nice with children's videos.

17 G4 flaky USB

2005-11-23 Thread Frank Cornew

Hello List:

My dad's widescreen G4 seems to have intermittent problems with the
USB ports. Sometime one works while the other one doesn't or both.
Running fully updated Tiger. USB peripherals are an HP 2840 all in
one and a Kensington trackball driven by Kensington mouseworks, also
freshly updated.

Currently all is working, so I beat a hasty retreat.

Apple Printer drivers

2005-11-14 Thread Frank Cornew
Any suggestion as to where to run down OSX drivers for old Apple
printers? Have managed to network an old Laserwriter plus and
Personal Laserwriter NT, and while they work with the generic
postscript printer driver, I was wondering if a more specific option
exists. Maybe I'm just being compulsive after getting all of this to
light up on the network through an pile of adapters, switches,
airport hardware and OS 7.6.1 through OS X 10.4.3

AFP

2005-10-30 Thread Frank Cornew

Hello List:

Can't get my Pismo running tiger to appletalk to an 040 based mac
running OS 7.6.1. Get an error mentioning incompatible AFP.

Anyone knows what this means? Only thing that comes to mind is
Agence France Presse and taunting at the ramparts.

OS 9.2.2 in PowerPCs don't have a problem on this network with the Pismo.

What would be the best forum/resource for figuring this out?

Re: Hard Drive Replacement

2005-08-24 Thread Frank Cornew

I saw a noticeable improvement in speed on my Pismo as I upgraded
drives from the original to the current 7200 rpm travelstar. At least
one intermediate between the original and current, maybe more. You
should see the same unless bus speed is a factor?

You've probably seen where, on this thread, mention was made that the
faster drive will use more battery power and produce more heat.

How, if at all, did these effect your Pismo?

Thanks,
bob

Heat and battery life effects were not significant. No additional
heat out of the HD or battery, battery life good.

YMMV

Would I see a noticeable difference in the 7200 vice the 5400 RPM drive?
This thing is already running very slow when compared to my G5 iMac.

The iBook now has an IBM-DJSA-210 HD, according to System Profiler, and
when I looked it up online, I found that it runs at 4200RPM. So, 5400 would
be an improvement; 7200 would be a vast improvement, no??

Re: real estate situation

2005-07-06 Thread Frank Cornew
Have managed to run just about any software on the various versions
of VPC, especially 5 and 6. Specifically, the schlock put out by the
mexican banks and government and (non schlock) accounting software
put out by a small softworks down here in Mexico. Has also been
useful for believe it or not accessing Mexican bank and the Mexican
IRS webpages that don't seem to fly under Mac browsers.

So it is definitely worth a try.

My only failure was a piece of software put out by a large company
that is a viewer for maps of Mexico city. It's copy protection scheme
apparently has a problem with the v.6.x VPC API implementation. So I
bought a pirate copy. (already own a legal copy, and the publisher
refused to make it work). Not sure if the v. 7.x VPC implementation
works.

Things will be a bit slower, so it depends as to how intense your
windows needs will be.

I'd take a shot at it.

Never mind the tech support fussing. If all he's looking for is virii
and network issues, you are not the droid he is looking for.

Airport Snow print sharing

Print sharing via Airport snow

2005-06-13 Thread Frank Cornew
Was able to resucitate an abandoned ABS snow that had its WAN port
fried. Spotted a fried surface mount resistor with my trusty loupe
and got it going again.

Am thrilled with the USB print sharing that is very simple and
reliable out of the ABS USB port. Used to wait until returning to
office for printing. Am using a Pismo running tiger to print
wirelessly to an Epson 740.

Is there any chance of printing to the Epson from my OS 9.2.2 desktop
machine hardwired to the ABS LAN port?

Thanks much.

If anyone is searching for the Al PB info, please take a look at the

popped a DVD-R into it and while the disk mounted on the desktop, the
DVD player gave me a media not supported message. Spat it out,
stuffed it back in, and playback worked. Bit of a fright as I have
just started to transfer an extensive VHS collection to DVD on my new

After Tiger... Firefox is slower

2005-05-09 Thread Frank Cornew
Firefox 1.0.3 is the latest version. Is that what you are running?
Try clearing caches (privacy preference pane) and other info stored
while browsing. My firefox is working fine.

Repair privileges/permissions?

Hmmm... I have not experienced this. In fact, I was noticing how
faster all pages load under Firefox since the upgrade.

Battery life under Tiger

2005-05-09 Thread Frank Cornew
Nope. Nonetheless, the time remaining for battery life and time to
full charge seems to be on the blink in my Pismo with a high-capacity
(6600 mAH) Newer Tech battery. Battery life is fine, but it never
manages to calculate the time remaining. I've cycled it several times
and it has yet to calibrate. Maybe this is related to your issue?

This battery has been treated VERY well and is reasonably new. The
cycle time reporting issue is definitely a cause of the Tiger
upgrade. My original Apple batteries lasted well in excess of what
was considered to be normal usable service lives.

Re: Doesn't anyone wait anymore?!

2005-05-08 Thread Frank Cornew
Hello kt:
Excuse my smug tone in prior post.
Forgot to mention that i ensured that the maintenance routines had
run via macaroni, did a full permissions repair, Disk utility repair
and a diskwarrior rebuild. Furthermore, no Norton products have ever
been installed on my Pismo OSX. All of these preventive measures
should have helped. Definitely contributed to me running out of gas
and gambling on a straight update instead of fresh install. Either
that or the painkillers i'm on for my back surgery last week...which
also may have contributed to the smug tone.

I really had geared up for a clean install - maybe even wiping the
drive in order to get find by content/spotlight indexing to work
properly. Will wait for my next drive upgrade. I wimped out, but am
still surprised by the mostly positive outcome.

Will also look for the Epson drivers mentioned by TurtleBear.
Anyway, let's focus on the reports of Tiger issues, solutions and
features. Should help everyone make or decide to make the transition.

Hello,
I have finally had a successful install on my PowerBook 17 1GHz with 1 Gig
of ram. I initially tried the update and when I rebooted everything was
slower than molasses trying to go uphill. System Profiler and Safari would
not even launch. I then did a reinstall, same problem. I then reinstalled OS
10.3.9 (not a good idea according to Apple) and still problems.
Today I decided to bite the bullet and erase and install and now everything
is fine. I had backed up all data and software so should not be a problem
now.

Stupid Pismo Question

2005-05-08 Thread Frank Cornew
If your guts are all solid, you might consider looking on eBay for a
parts machine with good plastics. Suspect that a clean case, keyboard
trackpad and screen are all you really need for like new state.
Assume you have a solid battery. I needed a replacement screen at one
point and it came with a top case that was in remarkably good
condition. Have also got a lower case for trackpad and the
power/sound cards.

One thing I do recall is that some of the auctions seemed to be from
questionable sources. Scan feedback for percentage AND content.

If you are patient you may even come up with an acceptable *working* machine.
Agree with you on the pismo. For everyday communicating and bread and
butter use, I see no need for anything newer.

Hey gang. I am running a Pismo which is now five years old and it
is really showing a lot of mileage. I have not been the kindest
computer owner and the demands I have placed on my faithful machine are
showing. I think it is time to retire the old girl and go with
something new. The problem is I still really like the Pismo, and I
have a lot of accessories for it--swappable drives, a ton of RAM, a big
hard drive, etc.
What I would really like to do, instead of buying a new PowerBook or
iBook, is buy another Pismo. That way I can keep using all this stuff
I've invested in over the years, and also stick with a familiar
machine. So my question is, are there any Pismos still available for
sale anywhere? Ideally I'd like a new machine that's just been sitting
in somebody's warehouse all these years but I figure that's pretty much
a pipe dream. So I guess I'm probably looking at used machines. The
problem is I have no clue about buying a used computer--how do I make
sure I'm not getting one that's just as beat up as the one I have?
Anybody got any ideas?

Doesn't anyone wait anymore?!

2005-05-07 Thread Frank Cornew
Let's get to work!
Tiger was a smooth upgrade on my 400 mHz Pismo. 576 MB RAM, 60 GB
fast travelstar. Was going to do a clean install and migrate due to
the scads of haxies on my Panther system. Updated the haxies, backed
up, got lazy and did a straight upgrade. No regrets.

Spotlight is great! Find by content never did work under Panther due
to some mysterious blockage of the indexing process. Really missed
it. Tiger Spotlight indexed 45 GB in under 8 hours.

We can now open multiple get info windows on selections of multiple
finder items as was possible under 9.x and prior systems. Previous
incarnations of X gave a one size fits all coverall info window -
useless when trying to compare files/folders.

Only two 'issues': My newer tech 6600 mAH battery doesn't seem to
calibrate. Time remaining for full discharge/charge never gets
calculated in menu bar display - yet. Pecentage, yes. Am cycling,
have reset PMU, nvram, etc. Think there is a hard core calibration
tactic via terminal that I may yet try.

Also am seeing odd behaviour with an Epson 740 inkjet. Won't print
via USB, but can access via utilities and get ink levels, clean, etc.
On the other hand, I can print to this printer via Airport Express
(remote node on network generated on a snow abs), but no access via
utilities or ink level check via the new button in print window.
Issues may have been present under Panther, only just pulled the 740
out of storage.

I have to agree with Craig. I originally installed Tiger as an
upgrade on my G5 iMac but I didn't like how things were workingI
had installed a lot of the haxies and such. So I copied my hard
drive to an external hard drive and did a clean install of Tiger.
I used the Migration Assistant to bring over stuff. But I had a few
applications that I had bought online and I kept the registration in
an email archive. In the past (when I upgraded from 10.2 to 10.3) I
had to open the entire file in textedit and use the 'find' feature
for the various apps (maybe I should think about storing them
somewhere else..or maybe hard copy). Anyway, with Tiger, I clicked
on spotlight and typed in the name of the application. Spotlight
found the email archive on the external drive, searched the entire
file and had the information for me in UNDER 10 SECONDS! Now, I was
EXTREMELY impressed!
In addition to speeding up my iBooks, 2002 Quicksilver and iMac,
Tiger is just really fast and I'm still looking for the 'bugs' (hype
on the part of some nay-sayers).
And, best of all, Apple BEAT Microsoft to the release of a 64 bit
OS. Running Tiger makes me proud!
But, for those of you who still prefer to stay with your present OS,
it it OS 8.6 or whatever.that's just fine and dandy. But keep in
mind that Apple doesn't support them anymore and there isn't going to
be a lot of new software coming your way. Nothing wrong with running
an upgraded 7300I applaud you, that's how I started out when I
decided to make the switch from Windows to the Mac, but progress is
so much more fun. And, that's what I use my Mac for is FUN!

Re: Pismo/External DVD

2005-05-03 Thread Frank Cornew
I purchased a LaCie 52xCD burner some years ago. Music CDs tend to be
skip prone even with the finest media and slowest burn speed when
compared to commercial CDs in my car player. Used all applicable
drive cleaners and compressed air. Bumps in the road, bass peaks, etc
make the disks skip. The problem does seem to be lesser at the slower
speeds and finer quality media.

LaCie indicated that there was no problem with the drive when it was
new, and refused warranty service. I am located in Mexico so I have
put up with it.

Data disks seem to be reliable. The guts are a LiteOn mechanism that
appears to be quite common. I have no other burner to compare to. Is
this normal? Any suggestions?

Re: FinderPop like utility for OS X

2005-03-02 Thread Frank Cornew
Response to Bruce:
Fruitmenu WILL do what Finderpop did. Think someone referred to it as
'Drilling' folders. At any rate, configure the 'fruitmenu' pane of
the Fruitmenu System Preference panel to permit 'click and hold mouse
to access contextual menu in finder' to whatever delay suits you.
Then access the contextual menu pane of the Fruitmenu pref panel to
include whatever you need in the contextual menu - mounted volume,
selected folder are good choices. Remove 'dance for me, wash my
clothes, fix dinner'. Add whatever you like.

I added Moveitems X because it allowed transport of files to the
drilled folder, in the manner of Popup Folder, which was orphaned and
stopped functioning after an OS 8.x update. At any rate both Popup
Folder and Finder pop were very elegant and easy to use. Can see why
fruitmenu doesn't appear to be a replacement, as it does do a lot
more and requires some persistence to configure. I also have folders
that pop out of the apple menu, for instance.

Response to Laurent:
(with great humbleness and respect to the listnanny)
Think that Finderpop's developer drifted away from the mac - or he
wasn't a full time developer. At any rate Finderpop was distributed
as a variation of shareware 'pintware', where satisfied users were
encouraged to send the author beer/stout money. This might explain
his lack of progress

It appears from reading the Fruitmenu site that it does everything

 button.
There is a utility called 'Look Mom, No Hands', also for OS 9 and lower
that does just this but it doesn't work with OS X either.
 It's all I want.
I don't need my menus to replace the finder, dance for me wash my
clothes and fix dinner, I just want them to pop up without me having to
 use two hands...
Bruce,
Do you think such utility would be useful and that a lot of people would use
it? I'm kinda wondering why the other of FinderPop never ported his
application to OS X...
But if there would be some demand, that might be something I could wrote.
I've been doing Cocoa development since basically 1992, so I know a little
bit about developing on OS X...

Have a brand (new to me) Pismo, first OS X laptop.
On my desktops I use my Kensington trackballs that have a button set to
control-click, but I am NOT going to lug around a mouse to use with my
new laptop.
Under OS X there used to be a utility called FinderPop, which among a
number of other things, set the contextual menu to pop up when you held
the mouse button down qithout moving it for a time.
FinderPop was never updated for OS X; does anyone know of anything that
does this for OS X?
(I don't need contextual navigations of my hard drive, the internet and
have a dock/desktop/Finder replacement app, I just want the bleep
context menu to pop up.
Suggestions?

OSX vs OS9

2005-01-21 Thread Frank Cornew
Noted someone commenting about how it felt returning to OS9.x on a
Kanga. Its taken me about a year to get accustomed to OSX after
holding out and hanging on to OS9 for maybe a bit too long.

Only things I miss are: Find by Content searching (still haven't got
it to index the whole drive on the Pismo. This will probably take an
absolutely clean reinstalling of the OS to straighten out.)

More importantly, I vaguely remember that OS9 used to report the
number of files and total size of the trash contents in the empty
trash confirmation dialog under OS9. Furthermore, Copy Agent (last
useful scraps of Speed Doubler) used to report the specific files in
the trash in the empty dialog under OS9. It may have even permitted
selection of the files to be deleted or that may have been yet
another add-on for my OS9 systems.

Anything similar for OSX? Standard trash empty dialog says nothing
about the trash contents.

Linksys WUSB54G 802.11g adapter

2005-01-05 Thread Frank Cornew
Yes they do - think it was the first airport offering from apple,
portable or desktop.

And it does work very well. Probably a good reason for my holding on
to my Pismos.

Nonetheless, does anyone have know if there is any possibility to run
this thing on a Mac, wireless TCP/IP out the USB port, driver
sources, etc. Just happen to have a Linksys WUSB54G 802.11g.

Find by Content Indexing

2005-01-05 Thread Frank Cornew
Any idea why I cannot index my 60 GB travelstar? (one partition in a
pismo under the latest OSX, fully maintained (permissions,
diskwarrior, etc)) Never have got the process to complete after
installing panther over 9.2.2. I know that indexing is probably going
to take a few days, but the process simply terminates after a few
hours. Have deleted indexes and started again, managed to index
individual folders/directories, but get the impression that find by
content worked a lot better under OS9 than this workaround.

Hitachi 60G 7200rpm laptop drive

2004-09-16 Thread Frank Cornew
Drive excellent. Much better than the original coal fired unit that
was very noisy. Excellent experiences with the IBM/Hitachi travelstar
line am currently running the 60G unit, have grandfathered the 20 and
40 G units to external enclosures or other computers and they are
going strong.

Running the Newer 6600 mAh Battery. Great improvement, but that is
relative to the worn out batts it replaced. 3 hrs with full
brightness screen, airport on DVD playback. 4+hours with airport on,
no screen brightness adjustment. Little over 5 hours airport off,
screen dim, etc. Panther.

Got it. Checked mod date/time on user prefs after 'healing' that user

appropriate time. Dock prefs were the problem. Dockdisk haxie
responsible. Uninstalled, all well now.

Thanks to listies I have learned useful stuff, plus my problem is fixed

For the Asteroids game I take it? BTW, did you lift out all of your
Library pr made a new user?
You can search for corrupted prefs with this in the terminal (On one line
only):
find ~/Library/Preferences /Library/Preferences -type f -name *.plist |
sed -e s/\(.*\)/\\1\/ | xargs plutil -lint
Anyone know how to make terminal code like this to an app to execute?

Re: Panther Reboot

2004-05-13 Thread Frank Cornew
Thanks much for the feedback. Didn't work. Assume that you refer to
the library prefs in the user directory. Didn't see that they got
replaced after deletion (replaced manually from backup archive), even
after reboot into barebones and boot into user. Somewhat concerned
about nuking the loginwindow.plist from the main library/preferences.
The hunt is on.

Sure miss conflict catcher

How come login hangs after a Panther crash? Have to reboot and login
to a bare bones user before I can log in to my main user? Suspect
that a pref file gets/is corrupted. What should I delete?
try com.apple.systempreferences.plist in ~/Library/Preferences. That
helped me with a similar, but not identical problem.
You can also try and remove com.apple.loginwindow.plist.
After that, you'd 'have to go for a hunt. Follow Laurents advice.

X stuff.

2004-03-22 Thread Frank Cornew
Does anyone know of a utility that makes the trash confirmation

Also miss the ability of 9 to list multiple info windows about files.
Under X all we get is a single window listing common aspects of a

 anyone done it?
As a rule, no, or at least not easily. The first problem is that
Lithium cells are not generally available. There is, I believe, also
an issue with resetting the controller chip inside the battery. Even
if you can find the cells they may cost so much as to make it not
worth your effort, although that is purely speculation on my part.
Indeed. I was able to find relative cheap lithium cells on eBay ($40). I
proceeded to rebuild one of my Pismo battery. I had some problems fitting
the cells in the housing, but I've never been able to reset the controller
chip. So, my Pismo never wanted to recharge the battery...

trash icon in sidebar, as well as...

2004-03-03 Thread Frank Cornew
Reasonably new to OSX, transitioned my Pismo with the Panther
release. Have modified the system to my heart's content, no problems,
have backed off on a few mods which were driven by OS 9 nostalgia.

Now that I'm getting used to OSX, I'd like to put the trash in the
finder window sidebars. Can't seem to see how to do it, not sure if
it is possible. Not really necessary but would be nice for my way of
thinking.

One thing I really miss from OS9, or really from Copy Agent (was
speed doubler's copy functions) was the window that displayed the
items in the trash in the trash empty confirm dialog. If memory
serves, one could even select the items to be deleted from this
window, or maybe that was from another mod. Anyway, anything like
this in X?

Re: Airport Problem

2004-03-02 Thread Frank Cornew

 Laurent:

 Chill.

Check your solder joints on that ABS. The caps may have degraded or
there may be a short between the terminals. Suspect that they are
used to condition the input power for the ABS, so any shorts will be
reducing the power available for running the circuits. I've replaced
my caps twice in a graphite ABS with the latest set being of a far
 greater voltage than the originals.
Test the ABS disassembled as well. You may be moving the caps in an
inappropriate way when you close the internal clamshell. I actually
cut holes in the clamshell to accomodate my first set of replacement
caps as they were too big to fit. The first set didn't fail - they
 were a temporary solution.
If all else fails, try a hard reset on that ABS. Maybe the firmware
got rattled to a low power setting that was mentioned in another post.
Thanks, Frank! Glad to hear from someone else who also repaired his ABS.
Actually, I had a lot of problems to get enough solder into the board holes
to hold the capacitors. I don't know if there is a trick when you do that,
or maybe in removing the older capacitors, I did make the holes a little
larger, but if there is a trick, I certainly don't know about it.
Also, since you seem more knowledgeable than me about this, if you know a
sure way to do any measurement after replacing the capacitors that would
tell me whether my solder is good or not, I would greatly appreciate. I
think that's is the only thing missing from the web site I used to do the
repair.
Again, I could certainly use your assistance to verify my (maybe poor) work.

Thanks again!

-Laurent.
--
Laurent:

Just check for continuity between a capacitor lead and a circuit
board trace near the solder joints. A zero reading should indicate
that your work is OK - not for sure, but good enough for our
purposes. More importantly, check for any shorts between the cap
leads or solder points as these are possible problems.
Not sure if there are any internal foils on this card that are
relevant, but you should examine that the solder appears to have
bonded to pads on both sides of the board (if present). Check
http://www.seanadams.com/deadairport/ for more tips. Also would check
the functioning of the unit before you close it, and do be sure to
upgrade the voltage rating of the caps relative to the original ones.
Also, you did respect the polarity of the electrolytic capacitors? -
they do have positive and negative terminals, indicated on the cap
and usually on the board

findbycontent

2004-02-12 Thread Frank Cornew
After transitioning to Panther shortly after its launch, I haven't
been satisfied with the find by content performance under Panther. It
worked very well for me under 9.2.2 on my Pismo, to the point where I
depend on it. I am being far more meticulous in filing my work since
it just izznt the same under Panther.

Background: Booted and installed from the Panther distribution disks.
Did not erase or reformat the drive, don't know if drivers were
updated. Journaling off. ~60GB drive half full. Only one language
selected.

Indexing: Attempts to index the whole drive fail after a day or so of
churning. Knew it would take some time, but this is absurd. Not
possible to reattempt indexing without trashing files in
Libraries/Indexes/findbycontent. Have successfully indexed specific
directories. Have repaired permissions (iteratively), checked other
maintenance routines, switched users, disk utility, etc. Am waiting
for the latest disk warrior.

Finding: Works, but slow on the selected directories. I get the
impression that it worked faster and with better hits under 9.2.2. Is
the index automatically updated, or do I need to do this periodically?

Do I need to backup and wipe the drive and start from scratch, or is
this just the way things are?

manual with it and I can't figure out how it worksEvidentally Intel
bought out Dayna and has ceased supporting any Dayna products. The NTR
was used by my wife at her school and is in great condition and I have a
couple of toner carts that I can use...The printer is rarely used
because I dropped Earthlink dialup and switched to Verizon DSL in October.
So how about it??? Anyone have any ideas or suggestions about the
possibility of getting this combo to work? If this is deemed OT, I
apologize in advance..Any replies can be sent off list if desired...
Again..Best wishes for a safe, happy and prosperous new year to all

How do I get rid of the blinking question mark?

2003-12-29 Thread Frank Cornew
Think what happened was that you installed a system that is PowerMac
7300 specific, given that it was the CPU in control when you
installed 8.5. The installer was under the impression that the
Lombard was an external SCSI drive on the PM 7300. The Lombard
therefore does not recognize the system folder as being valid? Also
may cause the slave/target mode not to work as it may not have been
supported on the 7300. Don't know if you can install 8.5 as a
universal system configuration, either.

Furthermore, as far as 8.5 is concerned, Mactracker reports that OS
8.6 was the original OS shipped with the Lombard, so 8.5 may be
nonfunctional on the Lombard. A 8.6 or higher CDROM should boot this
computer.

Finally, I seem to recall a size limit on slave/target mode from my
experience with Duos and 2400c platforms - drives over 2? 4? 6? 8?
gigs would 'work', but would get munged after a while.

Subject: How do I get rid of the blinking question mark?
I'm hoping one of you Powerbook gurus might be able to help me get my
Powerbook to boot up.
I recently purchased a PowerBook G3 on eBay (Lombard/G3/333/OS9.0/192Mb/4Gb/)

It arrived on Christmas eve (perfect!) The 9.0 system installed on
it booted ok, but was very s - l - o - w ! Years ago I had a Mac
Powerbook 160, so I used a SCSI cable I still had (with the square
30-pin connector) and connected the Powerbook in slave mode to my
PowerMac 7300, and installed Mac OS 8.5 from a CD-ROM disc, using the
7300's CD-ROM drive. Everything seemed to install successfully -- I
intended to then update the system to 8.6, using the PowerBook itself
to do the updating. But unfortunately, ever since then, when I try
to re-boot, I get the blinking question mark; apparently, it cannot
find the 8.5 installed system.
I now regret that when I had it in slave mode, I didn't switch the
startup disk to the PowerBook itself and iron out any difficulties
from my PowerMac 7300, because I have also been unable to to connect
the PowerBook in slave mode again. That SCSI cable I used the first
time is quite tricky to get its square end connected to the Powerbook
-- true enough, but something else now seems to prevent the slave
mode connecting, and I don't know what it is. I've zapped the PRAM,
held down the C key to try to get it to start up with my 8.5 system
disc, but nothing seems to qork.
I wonder if perhaps the original CD that came with this Powerbook
might work -- but then again, the CD player doesn't boot the Mac OS
8.5 dis either, so would any other CD-ROM disk be any different?
I wonder if somewhere inside this Powerbook is a cuda button, similar
to the PowerMacs.
Despite being an experienced 20-year Mac user, I'm so far unable to
get my Christmas present to boot up. Any helpful suggestions would
be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance.
Greenfield Bowie

Panther crashing help viewer

2003-11-30 Thread Frank Cornew
All is good now: Nuked the Virex Help file in Computer Mac OS X
Library Documentation Help folder as indicated in
http://www.thexlab.com/faqs/helpviewer.html, and all was good.
Datadirect.help.help may also be a culprit. Took me some time to rout
this link out of Macfixit or Apple support. Looks like a good
troubleshooting source.

As a recent convert to OSX, thought that I'd made it over the hump.
Now that everything is installed on the Pismo (good thing I
installed that 60gig travelstar), software is upgraded, less and
less classic calls, I've noticed that the help viewer crashes
everytime upon launch. Ick. Must have overreached with a haxie or
some bit of software, as I assume that the latest rev of Panther
doesn't do this.

Have started to uninstall much of the add on stuff, but no success.
Any equivalent to booting with extensions off in the manner of OS9?
Miss conflict catcher or even extensions manager at this point.

Virtual PC/Pismo 400/Panther

2003-11-21 Thread Frank Cornew
I delayed transitioning to OSX until recently. During this period, I
recall some discussion regarding Virtual PC under OSX being
problematic/slow. Now that I've got Panther up and running, all I
need to do to finally disconnect from OS 9 is to set up VPC in X.

I have a choice between VPC 5.x or paying for a VPC 6.1 upgrade.
Anyone out there care to comment as to whether the upgrade is worth
the trouble and expense? Is VPC 5 under classic an option? I'm only
going to run Win 98

Finally, the VPC 6.1 product description indicates that a 500MHz G3
is recommended or required. Sources of info not consistent. Has
anyone even installed this thing on a 400MHz Pismo?

Pismo Rubber feet.

2003-11-20 Thread Frank Cornew
As reported previously, I've used round, hemispherical clear
feet/bumperws from the hardware store for some time and prefer them
over the original black feet. (They should look better than a glop of
hot glue.) Nonetheless, give it a try. For those that insist on a
black foot, is hot glue available in black? The feet may also be
available in black, as well - I've seen black square feet, not round
ones. Square feet would definitely look nasty.

Relative to the black feet, they stay put way longer, grip my
inclined workstation far better, and put a bit more space between the
Pismo and the desk for ventilation. It is possible to find these
things in the exact size of the recesses that the old black feet fit
in. For longer lasting results and appearance, I recommend you clean
out vestiges of the old stickum out of the recesses first. GooGone?

I replaced all of the black feet during my first year of ownership of
the Pismo in 2000. Only two have come off since then, and probably
due to being bumped/scraped directly. The originals seemed to peel
off if the PB was slid across a reasonably grippy surface.

May replace them all again as they have yellowed and are a bit
scuffed. Think the originals were 3M brand - other brands may or may
not adhere as well. YMMV.

Think this issue has been beaten to death, but carry on if you wish.

 A:Glue gun.
Problem is that not all of us have managed to KEEP the feet that have
fallen out. I lost a couple on our local bus system, which means they
are gone for good. He is looking for ways to replace feet lost in this
manner, much as I am, so I would appreciate an answer for his
 question.
I think Clyde WAS answering your question. Ever used a glue gun? You
can certainly push a nice glop of glue out onto any surface the glue
used maintains a high degree of viscosity yet harders to a nice rubbery
feel. It's a great solution and one I plan on testing.

Re: Need help with Booting problem - batt life under X

2003-11-17 Thread Frank Cornew
Below procedure works fine for me - just use the respective startup
disk panels to switch back and forth.

Also, have noted that Panther (OSX 10.3?) is giving me the same - if
not longer battery life than 9.2.2 on my flock of three ancient
batteries in a Pismo. Maybe there was some kind of 'Battery Reset'
effect that was previously not available on the Pismo.

Seems that prior versions of X were problematic in this respect. Only
thing I would expect X to impact on battery life might be increased
virtual memory use resulting in more HD access. I've got 576 MB in
this Pismo, so that may not be happening.

Go ahead and boot to OSX. . after it boots up, go to your sys.

Pismo rubber feet

2003-11-17 Thread Frank Cornew
Dunno.
Have been using the clear feet from the hardware store for some time
and prefer them. They stay put way longer, grip my inclined
workstation far better, and put a bit more space between the Pismo
and the desk for ventilation. It is possible to find these things in
the exact size of the recesses that the old black feet fit in. For

The inclined workstation is actually a music stand that was probably
meant to be used on top of a grand piano. At any rate, it is smooth,
but the book stays put. Great ventilation, ergonomic and very
elegant. I'd pay $30 for a stand like this, not the feet.

F.

Hi.
Please share with me what is the racket going on with
replacing the powerbook rubber feet for a Pismo? I've visited at
least three websites where they are trying to sell replacement
stick-on rubber feet for close to $20. The lowest price at one site
wanted $10 for the strip of four black stick-on rubber feet but then
their shipping and handling was $10. This is insane since the weight
isn't even listed because it does not register on most postal scales.
Yup, you guessed it a first class no. 10 envelope for thirty seven
cents and away they go.
So as a temporary measure I went to Home Depot and purchased
clear stick-on cabinet door bumpers 3/8 package of twenty for $2.
The thickness is greater but I'm testing the first one to see if it
stays on.
Does anyone else have a suggestion for a reasonably priced
source of black powerbook feet?
Thanks

iBook display problem

2003-11-10 Thread Frank Cornew
All White, dual USB 500mhz, 10gb drive.

No display activity. Not even on external monitors or via shining a
bright light on the LCD.

No video response from either backlight, LCD, or video out to VGA.

Operates.. am able to boot and shutdown as if I were blindfolded. The
computer is operating, but the video is toast. Additional detail,
I've done continuity tests on both the LCD's data ribbon-cable, and
the power/microphone cable. Both check out.

The question is whether this symptom is consistent with a toasted
display module, toasted inverter board, or toasted video circuit on
the motherboard.

Pismo/iPod

2003-11-07 Thread Frank Cornew
Suspect that I had a similar experience with a 30 GB third generation
(3G) iPod.

My 3G iPod initially worked under 9.2.2 on my Pismo, but the
connection became increasingly flaky. Could only negotiate updating
of music after a reboot, even with a clean install of 9.2.2 with the
latest OS9 iTunes (2.0.4) and iPod updater (1.3?). Intermittent
mounting on desktop. No ability to change iPod prefs under iTunes.
iPod updater under 9.2.2 would not restore/repair the pod when it
started to be unreliable. Only solution was to reset it with the
latest iPod updater under OSX. Was starting to think that the cable
was damaged.

Believe that the last iPod updater compatible with OS9 is not really
compatible with the 3G iPods. iTunes may have some issues as well.
Checked the Apple webpages and did discover that there seems to be a
compatibility gap.

Doubt that this is a one pod - one computer issue, as a window
generally pops up warning about the different music libraries.

Learned much about iPod diagnostics and various button salutes for
reset/diskmode/diagnostics. Mine does not have the hidden record
feature

Finally decided that the time had come for OSX. iPod rock solid since
then. Only wish that I could transfer my playlists to the latest
iTunes for X from the old one. Any suggestions?

BTW, Panther seems to be snappier on my Pismo G3/400 than 9.2.2. Do
have 576MB RAM and the latest fast 60GB disk though...

No. It also won't even show up on the desktop (in either 9 or X).
Also, the iPod doesn't go through it's usual little connection song and
dance like it does with the other Pismo.
Well, first suggestion, if she doesn't have a compelling reason for using OS
9, she should switch and go to OS X and stay there. Next re-install iTunes,
the latest version and repair permissions. If you supect a firewire problem
on her machine, do you have another FW device to test with? Perhaps another
FW drive or camera.
You could use your Pismo to check her FW connection by using yours in Target
Disk mode. Do you know how?

Pismo Problem tidbit/Apple Audio Extension

2003-10-02 Thread Frank Cornew
Hello Drew:

Running a Pismo 400 with 576MB RAM, 60GB HD, OS 9.2.2 w/many third

Problem #1 really sounds like RAM or loose processor.

Problem #2: Apple Audio Extension. Had the same problem. Would have
to reboot with extensions off and then switch back to get going
again. Intermittent, generally cropped up after a crash while
running, even with extra system heap. Given the soup of utilities and
add ons in my system, I disabled it. Don't miss it. No more crashes
during boot. Not sure if it is necessary on the Pismo (if wrong,
please enlighten me - conflict catcher reports it as being an update
for audio software for PCI macs).

P.S.: Thanks for Classic Stumbler. Nice work.

Very true - but for AirPort, they co-developed it with Lucent.

David
Also think that the software in the card and the base station came
from two different sharewares. IPNetrouter in one of them, and a
different ware in the other.

Returning to the mouse thread. Don't care about the different
implementations of mouse buttons between OS. Especially on powerbooks
with trackpad/clickers conveniently located near mod keys, spacebar
and arrow keys which can assist in window navigation/scrolling. Have
been comfortable moving around in both worlds. Trackpad can also be
used for clicking and dragging, and scrolling. Definitely don't care
to hook up an external mouse. Yes, it would be simple to make the
click bar rock to implement a two button version.

Battery Monitor Question

Subject: Battery Monitor Question
A quick one for the list
Does anyone know if there is a program available that will show the power
remaining when running a Pismo or other laptop on battery? I know that
there is a feature in Norton Windows that does this because I have used it
on a Thinkpad 560 but can't seem to find an equivalent pgm for Mac laptops..
Regards,
Mike K
If you haven't migrated to OSX, MyBattery and the battery control
strip module in Jeremy's CSM will give you more battery info than you
would ever want. Look at http://www.kezer.net/

RCM glitch

2003-03-07 Thread Frank Cornew
The OT/PPP strip created by Dennis Wilkinson has always been my
choice for negotiating modem connections. Check it out on version
tracker - good reviews and cheap. Gives more info than the Apple CSM.
Nonetheless, I still keep the Apple CSM installed for a reason I
can't recall (currently use Airport fulltime) Running 9.2.2 on a
Pismo. This CSM runs well on my ancient iron and systems as well.
Sounds like something got corrupted in Greg's setup.

Re: Screen saver white on wakeup on Pismo

2003-02-28 Thread Frank Cornew
And, on my Pismo/400 the same sequence of 9.2.1 9.2.2 update didn't
install that control panel ( I found a tech note warning that use of the
control panel would require the drive to be put into a PowerBook that could
boot with that feature and require that it be removed (I think)).

L8r, Eric.

Yes, the installer won't do it. Was dumb enough to pry open the
installer tomes and install password protection and was locked
out of the Pismo. Apple tech pretty much told me that I was SOL and
to reformat the drive. Managed to mount the HD (with the password) by
booting the pismo with a CD-ROM and fiddling with a rescue utility
via a network connection (?). Don't remember exactly, but was
extremely elated with the outcome.

Then used DiskGuard, which was great until it became incompatible
with 9.2.2, and I haven't upgraded since the current owners don't
look reliable (or have been slandered) on Version Tracker.

Disklock looks interesting.

Multiple users under 9.2.2 also looks OK.

Any comments about the reliability/security of the above?

Anyone care to share experiences with screen replacement on the Pismo?

  This link was posted (http://www.go2mac.com/story.lasso?newsID=8920)
mentioning the successful use of a unspecified Panasonic LCD that may
be better than the original unit - in terms of viewing angle. Am
aware that Samsung and LG units will work. Any feedback on model
numbers and/or tech info that would ensure successful identification
on e-bay would be appreciated. Have looked at pbparts and wegener.

Also have noted some traffic regarding making an expansion bay
CDRW/DVD out of the original CDROM/DVD expansion bay unit. Any
recommendations in terms of functionality (bootability, reliability,
OSX/9?) and final appearance/fit of the unit? Panasonic UDJA710 is
mentioned in the above screen link. Any others?

I read the same article and it's handy knowledge to tuck away for the day my
Pismo screen goes dark. But as for the CD drives, I searched eBay and other
auction sites and have not been able to nail one of those puppies down at
any price, let alone a reasonable one.

Battery maintenance/pismo modem shutoff

Hello everyone, I just bought a brand new battery for my lombard, and before
I start messing around with it, can someone let me know how you properly
maintain these things? Also are there any special things you need to do to
make sure the battery life meter on the control strip is correct? I'm just
trying to guage it for an accurate run time..Thanks, Josh

Your battery is a Li-ion (Lithium Ion) so the best way to maintain it is to
simply keep it charged (just keep the computer plugged in when possible).
There is no need to discharge the batt.

In regards to the control strip, that is simply a software guesstimate. The
most accurate reading is pushing the little button on the batt. itself. Not
very precise, but that is the way it goes. You should get over 2 hours with
light computing and no CD/DVD use.

There is a cool batt. Voltage software out there called MyBattery. Look
for it on www.versiontracker.com or www.macupdate.com unfortunately it
only runs in OS9 or earlier.

Have fun,
Ryan

One minor niggle is on the PC (and ones I've used since the mid 90's),
you could tap on the trackpad to mouse click - do the newer

Password Protection

2002-10-10 Thread Frank Cornew

When I graduated from my trusty Duo 2300 to a Pismo, I noticed that
the Pismo OS easy install did not include the Apple's Password
Protection control panel that I had used on the Duo. Played around
with the installer and discovered that it simply would not do it.
Assumed that this was some kind of bug in the installer, and since
Password protection had worked so well on the Duo it must be good for
the Pismo. Well, as they say, assumption is the mother of all
f***-ups, which is the situation I was in after using Tome Viewer to
install Password Protection on the Pismo. Since there is far less
code in the Pismo ROMs, it never boots to the point where Password
Protection comes up and allows startup to proceed, and I was locked
out of my HD.

After much amusement with my arsenal of disk utilities, I was able to
access the disk, possibly over local talk after booting with a CD.
Apple support had said that I ought to call Drive Savers. Maybe I
could have transplanted the drive to another platform as a last
recourse. Excuse the smugness, but I was rather relieved and pleased
with myself.

At any rate, my need to secure the data in my computer was admirably
met by DiskGuard, which worked just fine until recently. It provided
great boot/sleep/hotcorner password protection that was tolerant of
disk rescue utilities and networking.

Unfortunately, this solution broke after upgrading Diskguard, system
maintenance or OS update to OS 9.2.2. Can't remember exactly what did
it.

In seeking to update/upgrade the software to the latest version, I
observed that Version Tracker feedback is overwhelmingly negative
with respect to the latest version of this product and its current
owners. Turns out that Diskguard has passed on through two different
(ASD, Intego) owners since I originally purchased it from Highware
(who gave great tech support). I'm also going to have to pay for the
latest version.

So...Any recommendations regarding options? I suspect that 'Multiple
Users' can be easily defeated by booting with extensions disabled.
The only other option I am aware of is DiskLock from PowerOn
software. Any experience with these options or other security
solutions for the Pismo?

A couple of questions remain. I know this topic was discussed for days about

Anyway, I am now running 10.1.5 on both of these machines and I understand

will be included in 10.2 so I will wait til Saturday. My only question is,
can I still use the computer that is the basestation normally? Sorry for my

Absolutely. It's just like a PC running Internet Connection Sharing

heads about 10 times and replaced the cartridge, so I'm thinking I may need
to just break down and get a new printer. If I buy one it might as well be a
printer that comes with a 10 driver as well as a 9 driver. Anyone have any
recommendations for a fairly inexpensive (under $200) printer that can print
photos pretty well plus handle a pretty good volume of just ordinary print
jobs?

thin protective cover for Wallstreet?

2002-08-09 Thread Frank Cornew

I've been real happy with Eagle Creek's computer vault.
http://www.eaglecreek.com/travel_accessories/40126.html Padded. My
Pismo fits with room to spare. Can fit in a few extra files, disks,
magazines, cables, batteries, etc which is useful when I don't want
to tote the briefcase/backpack along. I stitched on a shoulder strap
from another bag. (One could even make a backpack strap rig) Just
slit the seams, insert the webbing (heat seal the end of the
webbing), and stitch away for professional results. Really like the
top load configuration. Makes it impossible for the computer to drop
out of the bag due to zipper failure/zipper operator error.
Found this rig real useful at airport security. Keeps one from
extracting the puter from more complicated luggage, and yet will fit
in large briefcases, travel bags and backpacks...

Their computer safe also looks interesting. Is a little smaller than
the vault, and has attachment rings for a shoulder strap. Side and
top access.

Subject: thin protective cover for Wallstreet?

I carry my Wallstreet in my backpack when I want to work at my
favorite coffee shop and have begun to worry about setting it down
too fast to the peril of the computer. Is there a very basic cover
that fits over the Wallstreet that might protect it from a very low
impact situation like that? The cover would not need to hold the
power supply.

Trackpad into rubber feet

2002-07-17 Thread Frank Cornew

Clear plastic self stick feet are great replacements for the original
black rubber feet that peel off and get lost so easily. Think 3M
makes them. Available at hardware stores. Bouncy like rubber and they
grip about as well so the book doesn't slide off of inclined
surfaces, yet will slide without extreme force. (My pismo lives on an
inclined music stand from a piano or organ. Neat way to ventilate
under the book and raise it off the desk surface to imporve
ergonomics) The feet are available in the exact size to fit the
recess where the old feet fit.

After managing to not lose and reglue the original feet with various
sticky substances I discovered that the clear self stick feet stayed
put longer. Just clean out the recess where they mount real well
before installing them.

Any comment from other Pismo owners?

I bought my Pismo/500 when they first came out, and I've had no problems
at all (except the key-impressions on the screen). The only bad thing
is, she's missing three of her rubber feet. I use my PowerBook
everyday. She's on for 10 hours a day, survives a ride to and from work
in the basket on the front of my bicycle, and is pretty much
continuously streaming audio during the day.

All I did was add ram (384 total), and replace the disk drive. I can't
say enough good things about the IBM 40GN harddrives. I got me one of
the 30 GB versions, and it so nice and quiet, it makes using my laptop
on a quiet day possible.

Oh no! My little rubber feet are missing from the bottom of my powerbook!!!

2002-07-17 Thread Frank Cornew

As mentioned a few posts back, I've had success finding clear 'not
quite hemispherical' self stick plastic feet (made by 3M?) that fit
perfectly in the recesses in the Pismo. I finally lost an original
foot despite several experiments with different glues and ended up
replacing all of them with the clear feet. They are available at
hardware stores and have far outlasted the originals and resist
sliding quite well.

And I have been ignoring all those posts on some list I can't even remember
that told you where to get substitutes. Right now I'm using four
wintergreen lifesavers in their individual wrappers and it is working well
on a very flat desk but don't think they will last and they are slippery so
I have to anchor my arms below the wrist on the edge of the desk and then
stretch my fingers up to the key and this is no way to live.

Oh where oh Where do I find the substitute, or surrogate, little rubber
feet? Please, oh please, before I get reverse carpal tunnel syndrome.

Re: Pismo DVD drive problem

2002-07-16 Thread Frank Cornew

Given that a few different drive mechanisms were available in these
modules, do you know if the several dozen dead drives (sddd) are of
the same model? Apple system profiler should cough up the pertinent
info under the devices and volumes tab. (guessing, my drive is at
home)
Furthermore, could it be that the corpses are the result of attempts
to defeat the DVD region system? Several hacks are out there

Having accumulated several dozen of these dead drives, I can vouch that it is
NEITHER a connector problem nor a motherboard, software, or PRAM problem. The
drive is the problem--they die, and they die regularly.

We've begun replacing these for the unlucky who are no longer covered by
Apple, and in every instance I've tested the drive, and found them to be bad.
They may read CD but they won't read DVD. IT happens over over..

Thanks,
David

Wallstreet 250 boot problem

2002-05-23 Thread Frank Cornew

Greetings, James:

If you have enough RAM to spare, or can boot well enough to set up
virtual memory, you might try removing the memory module. If you can
then boot reliably, the problem should be isolated to the memory
module. Might be easier to get memory replaced than service in
Meherabad.

Just had something similar happen with a Pismo - crashed, couple of
partial boots, then deader than a doornail. No sad mac, messages,
nothing. Pulled the 512mb module and am running on 128 with vm until
the new module arrives.

Subject: Wallstreet 250 boot problem

When I restart my Wallstreet 250, I have to try 2-3 times to get it to
boot, but if I push the reset button and wait 5 minutes, then it boots
everytime. I also sometimes get an error message at start up saying that
the inbuilt memory failed a test and that I should see an Apple Technician.
I have reseated the memory chip, but it has no effect. In central India
Apple Techs are few and far between, has anyone seen this problem before?

Thanks,
